New D ‘n’ B Releases

REDSEAL002 Speakeasy – Luca Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl
Another name to add to the long list of talented Drum and Bass producers from New Zealand, Tim Webb aka Luca releases his first 12″ single on new Samurai Music offshoot ‘Red Seal’. Having churned out its fair share of talented tech flavoured producers, Luca is essentially the first of his kind from New Zealand to really make an impact on the international drum and bass scene with his funky, musically rich, and at times beautifully deep sound. ‘Speakeasy’ was one of his earliest productions and sparked heavy label interest. The sax driven glide of this tune has caught many an ear and while we at samurai usually have a distinct aversion to the saxophone in drum and bass, Luca has worked it into a simple, effortless magic we just couldn’t resist. And from the thick jazz club smoke out vibe to a different kind of fog, ‘Eastern Highway’ is an early morning trip into a deserted forest on the outskirts of japan. Stuttering breaks, rich moody bass, and an eerily soothing soundscape guide you gently through the vibe. Another truly special piece of music from an exciting new talent. Luca has recently featured on Hospital Records latest compilation ‘Sick Music’, and Red Seal has just signed another 12″ for him for the very near future. DJ support from Marcus Intalex, Lynx, Eveson (who featured ‘Speakeasy’ in his Knowledge Mag cover Mix CD), Soul Intent, Presha and more.

New D ‘n’ B PROMOS

REDSEAL003 Ringtone – Calibre Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl
Drum N Bass music is constantly changing, the ebbs and flows constantly revealing new artists and new takes on this teenage musical phenomenon. There are very few artists today whose name consistently holds its reputation for quality, timeless music. One name that has lead the way for all others to follow for many years now is Calibre. The mere mention of a new Calibre tune spreads gasps of anticipation amongst those who have come to appreciate the genius craftsmanship that has become the Calibre work ethic. To not only be this damn good, but to also be as prolific as this man is, Drum and Bass has truly been blessed with a steady flow of emotionally charged, and inherently deep music from the core of his soul. And so it is with great pride that we present to you two further slices of sonic bliss to add to your treasured collection of Calibre music. ‘Ringtone’ dons the mask and snorkel style and takes you deep into the realms of bass music, while ‘Jackoff’ is a distinct departure from his usual style and has been lighting up dancefloors for all those lucky enough to have advance copies. DJ support has been supplied by every person we have passed these tunes onto. It was decided early on to make this release look as beautiful as it sounds with full colour artwork, and pressings on 180 gram vinyl. The limited first run will be on transparent red vinyl, shrink-wrapped, and will not last! Grab your slice of history.

New Dubstep Releases

FRJ004 Free Standing Structure EP – Point B Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
After his excellent remix for Sully’s “Phonebox” EP last summer, Frijsfo Beats is delighted to provide a home for Point B’s latest and best experiments on the fringes of dubstep and UK garage. Point B previously enjoyed a swell of grass-roots appreciation for his material on leading UK electro label SCSI-AV – a sharp, intricately produced dancefloor twelve and an extremely thoughtful full-length. 2007′s EP for Stormfield’s Combat Recordings fused his techniques and sound palette with the rhythmic genius of two-step, an idea expanded and developed to its full potential on his first full Frijsfo release. Opening track “Detritus” is built around an unbreakable backbone of kicks, woodblocks and dense sub-bass growls. Tweaked techno stabs sustain the pressure until Point B drops a mean (but tastefully executed) snippet of Distance- style bass guitar and an atmospheric post-Skream melody. “No Smokes” is a tense meeting between two-stepping beat patterns and stiff electro-funk, illustrating Point B’s distinctiveness. Graceful soundtrack synths smooth things over somewhat, only to get re-jigged for mashed-up dancefloors by fragments of a caustic acid line. “Isocity Meter” boasts an even brisker, more invigorating arrangement, dominated by huge, metallic bass tones that sound as if they’re being collided and yanked apart by an elastic sense of rhythm. Finally, Italian Frijsfo discovery Kuoyàh contributes an unbelievable remix of “Someone Else’s Past”. His trademark loose, unevenly oscillating beat constructions are fascinating in their own right, but take away nothing from the rolling, dark two-step vibe. Any DJ who feels a connection to dubstep’s more creative eras should be playing this.

a2 – No Smokes
b1 – Isocity Meter
b2 – Someone Else’s Past (Kuoyàh remix)

New Dubstep PROMOS

BRK012 Cave Rave – Geiom & Spamchop Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Geiom + Spamchop find themselves in a distant mysterious land ravaged by sub zero temperatures. Across the hills they can hear faint echoes of deep bass..Crunching through the snow towards the source they discover a party in a massive cave full of odd rock formations and sparkling crystals. The ravers seem slightly unhinged but happy, dancing to strange future music that reminds our explorers of uk garage without the bling…Spamchop records some of it into his phone for future analysis – when the pair get back to the studio ‘Cave Rave’ is the result. After the beach jam which spawned ‘Eyl Booty’ (brk011) Geiom is making preparations to leave when one of the pirates shows him a video camera with footage of their most ambitious raid – the capture of the Sirius Star oil tanker – Geiom likes the idea of this ramshackle bunch going head to head with the greedy oil barons. He agrees to make the pirates something they can pump out while they make their way across the Indian Ocean – ‘give us something with a lot of bass – we kitted out our speedboats with some tasty subwoofers’ is the request. Geiom also includes some audio from the footage for good measure. ‘Sirius Star’ is going to be rocking boats, cars and raves everywhere for some time to come…

New D ‘n’ B Releases

EXIT008 Black Pocket Vol. Three – Steve Spacek Presents Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
The unsung king of UK soul returns with third installment in his popular Black Pocket series. This release is the sampler before the eagerly anticipated album. “Boungie” finds Steve showing his full vocal range with a slice of falsetto soul laid over a cracked beat of Fela fueled funk. The flip finds D-Bridge going to work on “Reverible Top“, a track that was initially to be found on Steve’s “Space Shift” album. This reworking has all the hall marks of D-Bridge’s hardened soul sound; often imitated, never bettered. “Black Pocket Vol. 3” is the perfect starter to a Dutch Pot full album of stewed UK soul.

REDSEAL001 Late Night Special – Eveson Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl
Samurai Red Seal is launched this week with 2 sublime tunes from Eveson. The label has been created as an offshoot to New Zealands Samurai Music label to release deeper, subtler, but still potent slices of Drum and Bass. Eveson offered these 2 tunes for the Red Seal imprint and of course we jumped at the chance as the quality was impeccable as always with this talented producer. With releases already under his belt for Creative Source, Good Looking, Deep Soul Music, Spearhead, Critical, 31 Records, and of course his own label Channel 82, the flow of beautiful music from Eveson has been plentiful. We are proud to be able to welcome Eveson on board at Samurai. ‘Late Night Special’ opened Evesons recent cover mix CD for Knowledge magazine ‘The Smooth, The Deep, & The Deadly’. The perfect opening tune for those wanting to set a vibe of soulful composure, this tune oozes with emotion. Flip over to ‘Solstice’ and we have another jagged slice of funk drenched melancholy from this master moodsmith. These tunes have had DJ support from Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Lenzman, Doc Scott, Redeyes and many more. The Red Seal journey begins! Look for further releases on the label from Luca, Calibre, Hiten, Tokyo Prose and more.

EAST081 Cheeba – A Sides Eastside Records 12″ Vinyl
After holding down the controls since 1989 Eastside label head A Sides consistently tours the globe laying down sets in over 40 different countries worldwide. He still manages to find time to lock himself away in the studio and keep his creative output Consistently flowing. This release is a fine example and is the first in a series of A Sides releases leading up to the release of his up and coming second solo album due to hit the streets this winter. We set things off here with the dub inspired “Cheeba” which moves neatly with it’s percussive groove wrapped with a deep bouncy sub line, original step and sound clash style stabs to compliment creating a big dancehall vibe. Strictly for the head nodders! On the flip you will find “One Love” which is aimed purely at the floor. Plain and to the point the beats shuffle nicely why the bass stays minimal punching through the mix. Things get deep midway with old school style bleeps and dub style vocals as the beats roll on. One for the dj’s! Both track have received good support from major dj’s in the scene and have been featured regularly in sets by Goldie, Bailey, Randall and Marcus Intalex. TRIM012 Feed The Culture EP – Various Trust In Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
The “Feed the culture EP” delivers hot vibes from some of the scenes most vibrant actors. Aeph is a dj and producer from Rome currently situated in London. His track “The Dogsick” starts out with cinematic strings and sounds that build and morph to a funky stepper. The wicked blend of jumpup and techstep in this tune brings together the best of both worlds. This track has already caught a lot of attention in exclusive dj sets… watch out for Proktah´s remix of “the dogsick” coming soon on Trustinmusic! Rregula & Dementia need no further introduction as they go from strength to strength with their releases. We are happy to release another gem from their labs. On “Obfuscate” they team up with hot-as-fire newcomer Smooth from Slovakia. The result is a real crowd rocker in massive sound quality and a heavy hook. A sure shot that won´t leave a dancefloor empty. After the huge success of the “Here To Fly” remix, Misha is on his own this time and provides a fresh and unheard neurofunk tune with “Deserts Of Time”. Soaring, vibrating and buzzing beats, stabs and sounds create a very headstrong atmosphere that sucks you in. A quite different tune with an earthshaking bassline and sparkling effects. “System Fuse” is a techstep tune that reminds of classics of this genre while bringing together the funk and the technique of these days. Dabs gave Aenimals original a remix that proves that he isn´t dealt as a promising artist for no reason. A menacing electronic soundscape matches with shuffled bass stabs and rolling beats for a very danceable and hypnotic darkside tune. DJ support by Chris Renegade, Apex, Subterra, Miss Redflower, Nphect, Proktah, Kryteria etc.

BRIG013 The Greatest Thing – D Kay & DJ Lee Brigand Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. We would be lying if we said we weren’t a bit bias when it comes to all things D.Kay, so it should likely come as no shock or surprise that when asked the question ‘Do you think D.Kay’s newest 12” out on Brigand is a hit?” the answer that we have no choice to reply with is a resounding YES! The deep, low end bass of ‘The Greatest Thing’, with DJ Lee, has just enough grit to it rock the damncefloor as welll as Radio 1. The percussion on this one gets an A+ for sure, with an honorable mention going to the double claps. Lastly, a half time breakdown always does a track good, and this one is without a doubt no exception. Raw.full joins D.Kay on ‘Sequential Circuit’ but this one is a 180 of the flip – tearing amens, hard hitting bass make this one an amen smasher – and it’s this tracks completely different direction that make not only it, but this 12” in general, solid all around. D.Kay does a great job at bringing it rough. Fact.

This 12″ is a slab of really fine dancefloor pressure, and proves that Horizons can’t be pigeon holed as one sound and is a label that’s going to keep everyone second guessing. Blasta met Kenzolika, Kyiv’s dubstep princess, in November 2008. It all started with a coincidence – the owls were falling, and they keep falling now. Blasta is a musician based in Vaska, St. Petersburg, Russia. Each tune on the album is filled with pure sweet emotions. Feel the tension in “Your Dub Delay”, a poignant cosmic dubstep anthem with vocals by Blasta. It doesn’t matter if you are drinking the “Black Muscatel” wine, drifting through the clouds inside a “Zeppelin Nacelle”, or just chilling and dancing slowly with beautiful girls inside the “Cosmic Lounge”. “This LP is something that has popped up from nowhere and is to be one of the best dance album’s I’ve heard in years, tracks like ‘Cosmic Lounge’ & ‘Black Muscatel’ are strong power plays from myself in the clubs and have had people singing with joy to the melodies or clenching their hearts with emotion – sumthing you don’t see in the clubs these days anymore due to the lack of good music played by the top DJs. HFT008 Just For You – Untold Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Barcode: 5055317200662 Following up on his first Hotflush EP earlier this year and his devastating remix of Toasty’s “The Knowledge”, Untold returns to Hotflush Two with his third release on the label. Reputed for his truly unique production style incorporating creative sampling, crunchy percussion and relentless bass pressure, Untold’s “Just For You” bleeds with energy. Taking a 4/4 direction and throwing back to the tribal stomps and piano stabs of earlier rave tunes, it simply destroys the dancefloor. On the flip, Roska, the hottest property in London’s UK Funky scene, takes it down in tempo with a rolling bassline and his trademark grooving percussion. One the most influential producers in UK music today, with a slew of releases in the pipeline, Roska is well known for his percussive style, distinctive bass and “Roska” vocal drops. His remix of Jamie George’s “Wonderful Day” has been making huge waves lately, and his productions have infected clubs all over the UK and on the London pirates. DJ support from Scuba, 2562, Ramadanman, Appleblim, Joe Nice, Incyde and many more.

PIPS007 Justify – Ramadanman & Appleblim Apple Pips 12″ Vinyl
Appleblim first met Ramadanman and Deapoh (of Barefiles.com) at FWD>>, DMZ and various other dubstep nights when they were barely old enough to get into the clubs. Blim picked up Ramadanman’s debut release on Deapoh’s Bare Dubs imprint and started spreading it across dancefloors in a healthy pasting. A friendship was struck up. And when we first heard ‘Humber’ we were floored; the phasing synths, rolling riddim and deep subs summed up everything we love at Apple Pips. This boy is on fire at the moment with house, funky, drum n bass and dubstep all getting the Ramadizzle touch. A studio session in Dorset between Blim and Rammles resulted in the deep house and Italo influenced track ‘Sous Le Sable’ out now on Will Saul’s Aus Music imprint and ‘Justify’, a 140 BPM jazzed-out techno steppa with an AWSOME Detroit-style house rework from Will Saul and Mike Monday …sublime!

EX7001 Yin Yang – Excision Ft. DZ EX7 12″ Vinyl
No doubt the majority of you will have already heard of Excision, one of the leading lights of the North American dubstep scene. His studio mixes have received over 60,000 downloads from one file sharing site alone, while his Rottun Recordings label regularly tops the sales charts, stacking up thousands of sales for each release on Beatport alone! Recently his official remix of Pendulum’s ‘Showdown’ brought the sound of filthy dubstep to the masses and has clocked up over 120,000 plays on the band’s Myspace page. Meanwhile DJs such as BBC 1Xtra’s Mistajam have been all over his signature sound. With so much attention from clubland and the media alike, Excision thought it was time to start a new imprint, geared to release the very biggest of the tracks in his record box. Teaming up with Infectious PR who will be managing and promoting the label on his behalf, Excision is ready to kick off EX7 (pronounced Ex-Seven, for those not in the know) with a pair of downright bangers. ‘Yin Yang’ featuring DZ is straight up LFO based dubstep at it’s finest. Featuring an ambient intro that lulls you into a false sense of security before smacking you round the face with a bassline so big it could be seen from space (that’s a ridiculous thing to say, don’t think we don’t know how ludicrous our own press releases sound). This track is also rumoured to appear on Snoop Dogg’s forthcoming ‘Dubstep LA’ mixtape, so watch out for some serious commercial crossover business. Flip over and ‘Obvious’ takes a surprisingly less obvious approach than you might think. Drawing out electro influences and blending them expertly with Excision’s unique hard-hitting style ‘Obvious’ is packed with energy for the dance floor but with plenty to keep you interested at home. Anyone who likes to mix up electro with dubstep should be slipping this into their sets.

HENCH009 Who’s The Hardest / The Shivers – Eddie K Hench 12″ Vinyl
Introducing the first 12” from Eddie K on the HENCH imprint – two chunky slabs of dubstep are in order from this young, talented Bristol-based producer – this 12” is already a big favourite of Caspa and where this man leads, everyone else follows, so enjoy, and expect more big things from Eddie K in the coming months.
WHO’S THE HARDEST is first up, staying true to his D&B roots, Eddie K brings us some fresh, fruity jungle flavours, with ‘Who’s The Hardest’. With a ragga vocal sample and repeated clicking of a trigger in the background – get your gun-fingers ready for this one, dubstep soldiers – as the tune smashes into the drop with some heavy bassline action and hard-hitting beats. Bringing the jungle influences into the dubstep sphere, ‘Who’s The Hardest’ has a very strong presence about it – so, beware cowards! AA.THE SHIVERS Flip over, for something a little more serious that will definitely give you ‘The Shivers’. Kicking off with a bold, brash opening, orchestral strings, and booming beat, the Dr Who-style synth lead, and faded ominous vocal sampling, are spooky and atmospheric. The tune almost twists into the drop with a sudden drum roll spasm, and, as the sci-fi vocal sample repeats, “this is a journey into music and sound”. With a pounding beat and classic sci-fi effects, ‘The Shivers’ is a fantastic piece of badness. Already a favourite of Caspa’s, as well as big support by other big dubstep players, including: Plastician, N Type, Hatcha and Rossi B, get hold of this as soon as you can – it’s going to be a massive hit. www.myspace. com/djeddiekuk

MEDI015 Dark Path – Goth Trad Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Sickness from Goth-Trad on Mala’s label, with perhaps his best twelve to date. ‘Dark Path’ on the A is an exercise in dub technology, thick slabs of bass overlaid with eastern melodies and mad FX. Percussion and snares are treated with heavy delays, pinging around like auditory hallucinations, building a framework upon which to hang the wistful chords and gentle flute topline. The flip is just as involving, stabbing wind samples and off-kilter hats readying you for sub undulations, runnin beats and mental bendy midrange noises. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

Blasta is a musician based in Vaska, St. Petersburg, Russia. Each tune on the album is filled with pure sweet emotions. Feel the tension in “Your Dub Delay”, a poignant cosmic dubstep anthem with vocals by Blasta. RAMP022LP One Foot Ahead Of The Other – Zomby Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
Very limited edition Finish copy. Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing. That boy is Zomby, and this is his new EP. Full Vinyl, CD & Digital release Sept 7th

HF023 Sketch On Glass – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Mount Kimbie have carved out another superb foursome for Hotflush, and once again the music is just as comfortable in the hiphop or electronica realm as it is dubstep. Folksy melodies and ducking piped synths swoop over garage cheek and serrated bass in opener ‘Sketch On Glass’, before ‘Serged’ takes us deeper and darker with its anti-quantised beats, spring reverb drips and surgically-altered vocals. Flipside, an epic sonic vista in ’50 Mile View’ makes way for delicate instrumental RnB before the introverted 2-step bleep of ‘At Least’. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

ONUDP53 Excercising – Lee Perry Vs Horsepower Productions On-U Sound 12″ Vinyl
After the Moody Boyz epic dubstep fix of ‘God Smiled’, the dancehall tune-up of ‘International Broadcaster’, and Kode 9’s funky style workout on ‘Yellow Tongue’, this latest episode in the Lee Perry bespoke remix series adds yet another twist to the musical path, with a hair-raising interpretation from Horsepower Productions. Seeping into halflight zones of bruised ambient dub, over the course of six minutes ‘Exercising’ builds like a distant tropical storm, it’s dense clouds gathering ominously on the horizon while Lee Perry’s shamanic spiritual abstractions add to the sense of heavy weather ahead. Built from similar strands of the low end gene pool as Kode 9 & The Spaceape’s ‘Sine Of The Times’, Horsepower’s brooding view of ‘Exercising’ discards dubstep’s recognised rhythmic frameworks in favour of a largely beat-free excursion, relying instead on swelling subs and oscillating bassline pulses for it’s unstoppable low tempo momentum. Tapping congas, echoing woodblocks and skeletal skittering noises dart insect-like across the mix, while the droning tabla and reverbed melodic guitar figures of Adrian Sherwood’s original production maintain an air of dread occidental mystery. With an equally massive no-vocal take on the flip, this is a simultaneously skin-chilling and oppressively close body heat raising journey to the heart of darkness, and yet another must-have release from the ever mighty On-U Sound.

HDB022 Wind It Up – Mark Pritchard Ft. Om’mas Keith HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Mark Pritchard is a highly respected electronic artist whose extensive pedigree of solo and joint productions includes names such as Harmonic 313, Global Communication, Reload, Jedi Knights and Link. Om’mas Keith is a member of the cosmically sleazy Sa-Ra Creative Partners. Their inspired collaboration on ‘Wind It Up’ took shape in mid 2008 and is finally being released on Hyperdub after building a strong following on dubplate, igniting audiences on dancefloors across the planet. ‘Wind It Up’ synthesises some of Hyperdub’s recent tricks into a bubbling compound of Mark’s pressurised electrofunk, and the futuristic off-beat synth-hop shuffle of Om’mas, with the essential catalysing X element of the Sa- Ra don’s gravel-voiced lyrics. In high DJ demand since the start of the year, ‘Wind It Up’ is a fun and forward-looking dose of transatlantic synergy that’s as unique as it is danceable. Reception to the tune in clubs worldwide has been explosive, and it’s already firmly established as an anthem at 1 Xtra DJ Benji B’s hype Deviation nights. Add in the flipside Freak Mix, which raises echoes of Goblin and John Carpenter’s tingling synthetic atmospherics, plus an instrumental rub, and the result is a hugely anticipated release.

DARKESTRAL004/005GB Sepia Tones EP (Gold & Black Vinyl) – Instra:mental / Instra:mental Vs dBridge Darkestral Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
Limited edition 500 copies press in special ‘split colour’ vinyl. Each vinyl is made from half gold and half black vinyl, split down the middle, and is limited to this pressing only. First editions sold out in a week so be fast! Reversed heavy board sleeves, coloured pantone black both inside and out, and with gold foil block logos and lettering front and back. Having created waves across the electronic music spectrum within a spartan set of releases, Darkestral recordings and Instra:mental have seen a vision made real, a shift and influence that is ever growing and risen from the kernal of a unified ideal. For this first EP release Instra:mental continue the tradition of the label releases by showing two distinctly contrasting styles on their solo offerings and continue in this vein via their colaborative excursions with the highly respected dBridge. ‘Photograph’ takes the deep, emotive route of previous releases ‘Pacific Heights’ and ‘Sakura’ into the most beatific, blissful and evocative music they have yet conspired to create..in short, a modern masterpiece ‘The Dead Zone’ brings a swarming, heavyweight appraisal of alternative dancefloor agendas, thick and dystopian atmospherics speak of a reading of the current times ‘Translucent’ further echoes distant memories summoned by ‘Photograph’, As if a gauze has been thrown over something personal and loved, in order to shroud its true beauty ‘Detuned’ returns to experimental pastures, this is pure soundscaping for Dancefloors without boundaries, something of an uneasy existence made flesh for a carnival of alienated club goers. ‘Photograph’ features as the closing track on the commix ‘Fabriclive 44′ compilation. www.myspace. com/darkestralrecordings

RAMP020 Hot City Bass – Hot City Ramp Recordings 10″ Vinyl
Due to their unfeasible low attention spans, and bored of trawling the earth looking for new human producers, the friendly people at RAMP opened their cybernetic research department, to create new and exciting robotic producers. First, they made a rave robot, which predictably they grew bored of. They then went onto make a 2step robot, which again, they grew bored of. Upon relaising that cybernetics and robotics was no the way to feed the void boredom created, they disguarded their robots in the ditch behind the office. The two robots began talking, and quickly sparked up a friendship. One night after drowning their sorrows with many Peach Daiquiri’s, the two robots fell into each other’s arms and had hot drunken robot sex, and rave robot fell pregnant. Nine months later, there was a tap on the RAMP Recordings back door, followed by the patter of robot feet running away. Upon opening the door, they saw a basket containing a robot child and a note, which read: “THIS IS HOT CITY”

ROCST24 Clockwise – Temper D vs Balkansky Rockstar Recordings 12″ Vinyl
“Big tunes on this one. Uptempo and Mad Heavy!!” Drop The Lime Finish copy. Rocstar is the label of dance legend Cut La Roc, previously of Fatboy Slim’s Skint imprint. Rocstar prides itself on representing across all dance genres, and has been home to tunes from the likes of artists as recognized as Bentley Rhythm Ace and even Kool Keith! Their most recent signing is Temper D, diversifying his sound from drum and bass to a combination of dubstep, breakbeat and fidget house. Whatever you call it though, one theme runs through everything from Temper D and that is it is aimed squarely at the dancefloor. This particular release is aimed at the dubstep heads who want some progression in their tunes, as both tracks progress from halftime dubstep beats into full on driving breakbeats, all underpinned by huge bass. Balkansky (aka Cooh) has been releasing dance music under various guises for many years, and shown his versatility in drum and bass by being pushed by labels as influential as Hospital, Position Chrome, Offkey and Hospital Recordings. As Balkansky his sound has to be heard to be believed. Massive mixdowns and driving wonky funk are the order of the day.

IME012 Hades – Gatekeeper Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Immerse cuts a unique groove these days, releasing original, leftfield music, often dark and uplifting simultaneously. This new Gatekeeper plate falls on the darker side of the fence, but that’s no bad thing. ‘Hades’ is a moody skulker – triangles, pads and trickling sound FX giving way to a thumping bass’n’drum workout, dotted with delayed beeps and cutup shouted warnings. Flipside, the Keeper’s original Skull Disco collab ‘Tomb’ gets a rework, the insistent midrange line slotted into a rock-hard selection ofmilitant breaks, subterranean bass and dystopian mechanical noise. LAB007 – Truth Revelation Lost at Sea 12″ Vinyl and digital released mid July 2009 The next Aquatic Lab release touches down in the form of Revelation and Lost At Sea, backing up last release with two more fresh productions from New Zealand’s Truth.Revelation is a complex arrangement of layered percussion and broad soundscaping techniques. This track has to be heard to be believed, perfectly proportioned production coupled with a devastating bassline making it primed for the draw back. On the flip, Lost At Sea arrives at another crossing point between dubstep experimentalism by expertly fusing dub chords with deep kickstep syncopations. Riding over ridiculous amounts of rolling sub weight, dislocated vocal effects create a dusty jazz style that’s finding favour with a forward thinking audience. Massive Plate.

zomby review – fact magazine

zomby review – fact magazine

Posted 28 July 2009 | By | Categories: news, reviews | No Comments

This much you probably knew. Well now we can reveal more. One Foot will be released as both a digipak CD and 12″, designed and layed out by Kate Moross (the black circle on the artwork you see above is a sticker on the plastic wrap, and doesn’t appear on the actual digipak). It features nine tracks:

1. One Foot Ahead of the Other
2. Helter Skelter
3. Pumpkinhead’s Revenge
4. Polka Dot
5. Godzilla
6. Expert Tuition
7. Bubble Bobble
8. Mescaline Cola
9. Firefly Finale

As far as the tracks you can’t sample above go, ‘Polka Dot’ was on Zomby’s myspace almost a year ago, and ‘Firefly Finale’ will be familiar to fans of Dusk and Blackdown’s Rinse show; they’ve played it before in its chrysalis stage under the name ‘Be Reasonable, Expect the Impossible’. ‘Expert Tuition’ is the most 2steppy thing here, with a real touch of Martyn to it, and ‘Mescaline Cola’ is stuttering, paranoid house in a similar vein to ‘Bubble Bobble’, built around a distinctive sample of what sounds like a slurp through a straw and dangerously good.

In fact, this whole EP is superb. It was clear from tracks like ‘Bubble Bobble’ and ‘Godzilla’ that One Foot Ahead of the Other was going to be different to the Zomby records that preceded it – focused on vibrant, sharp, 8-bit sounds that seem to stare in every direction at once (as opposed to the amorphous gloop of his self-titled Hyperdub EP or the Atari and Akai sampler-indebted hardcore of Where Were U In 92? on Werk Discs), and it lives up to the promise of these tracks and expands this vibe into a cohesive mini-album that’s as colourful and multi-layered as the sleeve artwork. Watch out for a full review nearer the time of release.

OK014 Hubble – Raiden Offkey 12″ Vinyl
Since 2005, Offkey Music have led the way in defining, what was then, a new sub genre of Drum & Bass. Their trademark sound drew upon the musical history and philosophy of label head honcho Raiden, in that a number of key elements from the sounds of Detroit and minimal techno were to be fused with the traditional core elements of breaks and bass. A journey of creative exploration and development followed and with the assistance of talented ‘like minded’ souls such as Khanage, The Sect, Propaganda, Audio & Proket, Offkey Music firmly cemented itself a position as innovators of note within the scene. Thirteen EPs and one critically acclaimed album later, the time had come for Raiden to take a step back from the music and review what his label had achieved, but even more importantly, what it may achieve in the future. The Techno / Drum & Bass hybrid developed some years before had acted as a calling card to many other producers, each with their own take on how this sound should develop. Whilst recognising the creative abilities of those trying to further the sub genre, the sound for which Offkey had become synonymous was no longer the sound of its creator. The time had come to reinvent the content… And so, ‘OK14’ is a landmark release. Its tracks symbolise the new direction in which Raiden and his Offkey recording artists will hone their skills. Once again the sounds are innovative, fresh and exciting… Everything you would want, only with the twist few expected. Forget any preconceptions; THIS is the sound of Offkey! THIS is the sound of Raiden! Track ‘A’ – Hubble: Getting heavy rotation on the club circuit, many will have gone mad to it, few realise who is responsible for it. If ever a track epitomised the raw elements of cutting edge Drum & Bass music, this is it. A proper nasty piece of beat work filled with twisted self-oscillating bass sorcery that is simply laying dance floors to wreckage. This track has gained massive support from the likes of Andy C, Ed Rush, Dieselboy and of course the OK recordings crew… Track ‘AA’ – M82: Fresh out of the studio and totally uncompromising, Raiden delivers this new take on the old ‘B Boy’ roller. Spaced out ethereal pads swirl around a crisp multi layered tribal drum workout. The whole thing relentlessly builds toward an all out bass heavy assault on the senses. Factor in some delicious edits with slicker than slick production throughout and it’s a ‘must have’ for any discerning Drum & Bass lover. LIGHTLESSLP002 Homefree – Fanu Lightless Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 3
Finish copy. Junglist. Samplist. Breakbeat aficionado. Passionate DJ. Avid music lover. Those are some of the descriptions that fit Fanu. While living in the rather dark and cold North of Finland, he got into the jungle thing in the mid-nineties – soon after hearing some electronic music during the earlier years of the decade. Around that time, he also started experimenting with electronic music and sampling for the first time. “I lived in a small countryside town, where I didn’t really have anything better to do. My friends exposed me to some early electronic stuff and I was blown away immediately. Soon I found myself trying to emulate the tracks I heard, sampling, layering and combining all kinds of different sounds.” But it wasn’t until he heard jungle that he knew there’d be no turning back: The long awaited second album by Finlands Fanu is now for sale exclusive to Digital Tunes. Be sure to check out what the breaks maestro has been cooking up in the studio!

CIADK019 Sugar Hill – Lenzman C.I.A. Deep Kut 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Following his awesome remix of Total Science & Conrad’s modern classic ‘Soul Patrol’, Lenzman hooks up with the CIA crew once more for another duo of deep kuts. Everyone’s been talking about ‘Sugar Hill’ thanks to its inimitable style and Lenzman’s signature rolling throughout. Solid beats and a nifty synth hook make way for wide open atmospherics and a gradual build up to a drop which oozes with class. Rising pads and a muted reese bass are peppered with a soulful vocal snippet which makes this track completely irresistible. On the flip ‘Memory Loss’ is an exercise in beautiful minimalism as percussive licks mingle with interspersed vocals and epic pad swirls. Lenzman shows you how to make a track which is simple, yet highly effective. We hope you were paying attention, kids! Look out for CIADK020 – Henree & Hitten, dropping soon. DW01 On A Mission – Smooth, Rregula & Dementia DrumWise 12″ Vinyl
DrumWise is not new in the field of drum and bass and first release is only a step on the path. On a mission tells what essentially its all about. With rhythm sections coming in from the start, this collaboration with the rising Slovenian hope Smooth and already established Dementia and Rregula, gives no space to breathe. Intro disco feeling, goes to crunchy uncompromised bass in and after the dropdown, and with disowned vocal in the back it creates a proper dancefloor smasher. On the other side, Slave from Smooth, reprogrammed by legendary Nookie is deeper than deep and crossed with huge bass line presha.

KAP004 Purple City – Ginz & Joker Kapsize 12″ Vinyl
Joker’s Kapsize imprint is pushing things forward in 2009. The last plate ‘Do It’ and ‘Psychedelic Runway’ crossed from the underground right onto Radio 1 shows including Zane Lowe, Pete Tong and many more. This next installment promises to be even bigger as both sides of the plate send shock waves that reach beyond dubstep once again as all the big names draw for their favourite side. Both Joker and Ginz (previously working under the names 30Hz, P. Dutty, Empty set and one half of The Body Snatchers) pool their talents for this huge release. Joker & Ginz ‘Purple City’ Quite simply put – ‘Purple City’ is one of the biggest tunes you will hear in 2009, no fronting! Being repped across the board by the biggest, pickiest names in the scene, hear is a rhythm that crosses boundaries effortlessly. CHST006 Chokehold / Surrender – Distance with Benga & Cyrus Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
With ribcages still rattling from the last Chestplate release, Distance dishes out another double dose of Dubstep to keep his shockwaves shaking craniums and chest cavities worldwide. The sixth release continues the label’s template for showcasing Distance’s own indomitable productions, this time with longtime collaborator Cyrus joining the maestro as well as the Afro Warrior himself, Benga combining with the Chestplate don. Whilst CHEST006 sees Distance collaborating with two of the scene’s biggest names, it is also one of the most experimental Chestplate’s to date but yet it loses no appeal for the hardcore Dubstep contingent. Previous releases on Chestplate have meandered around the hard and nasty to the cold and ferocious. Both categories are covered on this 12”. Chokehold sees Distance and Benga injecting ingenuity into the rhythm pattern to ‘what-the-fuck!’ levels. As ever, Distance’s textures and sound design work shine whilst the groove stamps Benga’s giant footprint all over it. The result sounds like the track could be no one else’s. It snaps and snakes, pounds and pulsates whilst laughing in the face of the ten a penny tear out wobblers. This one is more devastating than any of those, whilst being simultaneously understated and innovative. Surrender, in collaboration with Cyrus, is a pure rumbler; maniacal and menacing to the very last bar. Its haunting ambience is enough to petrify even the most hardened raver. A classic Distance and Cyrus workout. Eyes down, zone-out skank-out material. These tracks have been getting major support from across the Dubstep DJ spectrum with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. Distance fans can also check out his brand new album entitled Repercussions, out now on Planet Mu, accompanied by a second CD of all the Chestplate tracks to date.

CIV007 Heavy Arms EP – Reso Civil 12″ Vinyl
Grotty, liquid, dark, brutal and lush are all words used to describe the music of 25 year-old Alex Melia aka Reso. Such contrasting adjectives may be hard to reconcile, but after a listen to this EP, you’ll begin to understand. A drummer at heart, these natural patterns of “skin hitting” are ingrained within his brain and shine through on his digital programming and productions. After the underground dubstep smash ‘If Ya Can’t Beat Em’, Reso returns with another equally huge tear-out face-melting12” for Civil, cementing his stature in more than one genre in the process. ‘Beasts In The Basement’, boasting huge driving monster bass and bonkers heavyweight machine sounds, is a jawbreaker of a track that keeps its tongue firmly planted in its cheek. Meanwhile, AA side ‘Busted Crunk’ is as crazy as it gets; reminiscent of early Planet Mu releases but as much de nos jours as Rustie’s ‘Zig Zag’, it’s a technoid android constructed from old school jungle, wonky bass, rave building key changes, Reso’s unique hard electrostep touch…. and a big big drop. Reso’s aural identity is a densely layered, high octane tapestry, rich with musical texture and colour, which really sets him apart from the minimal sparsity of many of his fellow producers. Mary Anne Hobbs has been a fervent supporter of the young producer, along with Rusko, Starkey, Burial, Freq Nasty and so many more. Reso is certainly one of the most technically gifted producers to have sprouted from the dubstep scene and is fast gaining recognition from the wider techno, glitch and breaks community for his own twisted take on the dubstep /130bpm-140bpm sound. Like the soundtrack to a robot genocide, the ‘Heavy Arms’ EP is set to be one of the biggest dubstep releases of the year so order up big.

AA – Busted Crunk’

ARGLP02_2 The Incredible Adventures Of Kenzolika & Quetzalcoatl Among The Air Castles Part2 – Blasta Argon Records 12″ Vinyl
Other tempo’s on the album shows the talent that Blasta really has with music making…….This album WILL be remembered for years to come!!!!!!” – Heny G “The tunes are just snapshots of your feelings.” – Quest “This is as deep & sexy as it gets. Blasta delivers one of the most beautiful dubstep albums ever made.” – L-Wiz “This album is immense, breaking down boundaries in dubstep… pure vibes” – J:Kenzo “Sophisticated dubstep music providing food for your soul! Pure jazzed out boogie! Blasta is sick!” – Distinction “Blasta reconcilie le dubstep et la soul music. Un retour aux sources efficace!” – Von D Blasta gives birth to a brand new sound, true future music. Music that is cooked from the most delicious rave, dub and jazz flavors ever created. This album gives you a complete feeling of tenderness and love, taken from the winter and fitting perfectly into the early spring.

ACRE012 Fall – Rich Reason & Fantastic Mr Fox Black Acre Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Clocking in here for the first time since their warmly received debut on Hemlock, Rich Reason & Fantastic Mr Fox jerk the Black Acre steering wheel sharply left into a murky new trajectory. Fall, an ode to the autumnal onset features the lush sound textures that have become the Manc super team’s calling card. Kicking off as a horn blasting bass-lead 130 skanker, Fall proceeds to hoodwink the listener with haunted soul and anomalous artefacts buried deep in the sampledelic mist. A thin line is deftly navigated in combining the muscular low-end with an enriching sound palate, stimulating both body and synapse. Lo-Fi-Ve, walks a longer more arduous path, masquerading initially as a sinuous dose of future garage, the clipped snares and 808 boom will have you on your feet quicker than the ice cream truck. Ever the curve ball pitchers, a Hitchcockian twist abruptly takes us into the obscure. Distant horns and warping bass are bathed in the UV glare of bubbling operatic synth-work climaxing in a cascade of citric sound. Support: Jamie Vex’d, Bobby Friction, TRG, Untold, Geiom, DJ Yoda, Pangaea, Kid Kameleon Reviews: DJ, Mixmag, Wire, IDJ

Splurting electro synths and raw male “Zappah” vocals introduce the A, with a choice selection of bass bulges and laser wobbles firing off over the tuff beats and incidental drum edits. New D ‘n’ B Releases

SYMM005 ReTech / Is This What You Want VIP – Break Symmetry Recordings 12″ Vinyl
This second installment of the Symmetry Remix Series brings a fresh new track, and special V.I.P version of one the albums most popular tracks. Symm005 A: ReTech – As the name suggests this track is techno inspired but still laced with all characteristics of a Dn’B dance floor destroyer. Deep and funky sub with snappy and funky beats, tight punchy percussion keeps this one grooving right to the end. B: Is This What You Want ? V.I.P. – Already a big tune from last year, this V.I.P. version takes the track to a next level. Withan extended intro, ideal for mixing in, a twisted vocal breakdown, and a chest squashing drop, this one is a guaranteed smasher. DjSupport from : Andy C, Friction, Bailey, Hype, Noisia, Dbridge, and many more……

EXIT014 Thugtronik / Thugtronika – Instra:mental Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
EXIT014 brings us more amazing music, design, & packaging. After the mighty “Blush Response” collaboration with dBridge on his debut album The Gemini Principle, followed by an impressive contribution to the Aptitude Series, Instramental grace Exit Records once again with a this outstanding 12” Both have been created from the same electronic genetics and sit side by side like brother andsister. Yet another fine example of why Instramental have been getting so much attention recently. Their trademark clean anddistinctive sound has been evolving at an ever increasing rate, and here we have two extreme directions on the same 12’ that remindus what these guys are capable of. Thugtronika kicks off with a solid beat from the off and promptly brings back memories of the legendary Blue note era. Snares fly around like white hot shrapnel layered with metallic effects that paint an audio landscape akin to a futuristic war zone. Think twitching android limbs, pumping hydraulics, severed electrical cables and puddles of toxic waste. Then incomes the bass. Rumbling over the horizon like an army of thuggish robots armed with 40hz cannons flattening anything in their path. This is one of Instramentals more aggressive offerings which highlights their versatility and is sure to get your body moving. Thugtronik is like the bleak aftermath of Thugtronika, less aggressive but still with a low end capable of flattening tower blocks. Hypnotic percussion sets the tempo, and a droning undertone of pulsing bass complemented with hair raising sinister effects set themood. Whilst its ugly brother will move your body, this beautiful sister will undoubtedly stir your mind and soul.

NONVOGUE003 Ghost Radio – The Upbeats Non Vogue 12″ Vinyl
How heavy is this? D&B lovers are familiar with The Upbeats’ distinctly searing, risk taking electro style and this sampler from their forthcoming debut is as headstrong as a mad woolly mammoth on heat. ‘Ghost Radio’ directly attacks with speed metal riffs clashing with furious cyber-keys. Constant troughs and crescendos of mood, while ’1968′s forward thinking impresses with crazy pans and bongos. A nice fix while you wait for Ed Rush & Optical’s imminent new album. NONPLUS001 Wonder Where / No Future – dBridge / Instra:mental Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
After arriving back on the scene in 2006 Instra:mental have fast gained a reputation for re-sharpening the cutting edge approach to making music. Taking influence from their love of electronica and incorporating it into a fresh and unorthodox style, they have managed to create a distinctive and inspiring sound. In 2009 they have decided to start their own label in order to give them afocused outlet for their music, and also the music of other artists who they feel are on the same path. Quality, longevity, freedom of expression and nonconformity are some of the ideologies behind their new label, Nonplus+ Records.
a) dBridge ‘Wonder Where’:
‘Wonder Where’ by dBridge is a fine example of how the label means to continue. dBridge is hot off the back of his debut solo album”The Gemini Principle” in which he first gave us glimpses of a talent which he shares with his brother Steve Spacek as a vocalist. Since then he has been busy continuing to lay the foundations of his own respected imprint Exit Records. If his voice sounds familiar ,perhaps you have heard the track “These Words” on which he featured on Martyn’s highly regarded debut album “Great Lengths”.Wonder Where is quite unique in the way it is regularly getting played in the sets of DJs from many genres. Drum n bass dj’s such as Marcus Intalex, to soulfull house Dj’s like Benji B, and also Dubstep pioneer DJ Skream has regularly been finishing his sets with it. Dubstep legend Burial has also seen fit to include it in his upcoming DJ Kicks mix. This track is fast becoming an anthem amongmany different genres and is sure to be featured in many a dj’s sets for many years to come.
aa) Instra:mental ‘No Future’:
Instra:mental have chosen their own track “No Future” which is ironic considering they obviously have a very big future ahead ofthem. Already licensed to the highly acclaimed Commix Fabriclive.44 this track (and most of their music) manages to resurrect theghost of early electronic music with the essence of artists such as Model 500 and the legendary Detroit techno movement of the 80sand early 90s. Using original hardware drum machines and synthesizers to create the analogue warmth and groove which wassynonymous of those times, they bring elements back to the music which have been somewhat lacking in recent years and laced itwith all the benefits of modern music making advancements. This track will be loved and cherished by those who appreciate goodmusic and will play just as well in the comfort of your own home as it would in a packed out dance floor. For more information go to www.nonplusrecords.com

REDSEAL002 Speakeasy – Luca Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The sax driven glide of this tune has caught many an ear and while we at samurai usually have a distinctaversion to the saxophone in drum and bass, Luca has worked it into a simple, effortless magic we just couldn’t resist. Another truly special piece of music, from an exciting new talent. Luca has recently featured on Hospital Records latest compilation ‘SickMusic’, and Red Seal has just signed another 12″ for him for the very near future. DJ support from Marcus Intalex, Lynx, Eveson (who featured ‘Speakeasy’ in his Knowledge Mag cover Mix CD), Soul Intent, Presha and more

EAST081 Cheeba – A Sides Eastside Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. After holding down the controls since 1989 Eastside label head A Sides consistently tours the globe laying down sets inover 40 different countries worldwide. He still manages to find time to lock himself away in the studio and keep his creative output Consistently flowing. This release is a fine example and is the first in a series of A Sides releases leading up to the release of his upand coming second solo album due to hit the streets this winter. Things get deep midway with oldschool style bleeps and dub style vocals as the beats roll on. One for the dj’s! Both track have received good support from major dj’sin the scene and have been featured regularly in sets by Goldie, Bailey, Randall and Marcus Intalex. Forthcoming in 2009:East 82 – A Sides & Makoto – Spacetrain / The Final Fugutive East 83 – Eastside / C.I.A collaboration – Trigger Happy (A Sides Remix) / What U Don’t Know (Total Science Remix)

Finish copy. As we move into the summer months, Coded hits it’s second release following up from the success of the mighty‘Guillotine’ and certainly shows no sign of slowing up. On release number two, label boss Phobia steps up to the A side with the heinous ‘Voltage’. Lashing drums, heavy bass and that trademark Phobia sound make this a track you just can’t ignore. Guaranteed to smash any dance floor apart… On the flip, we welcome Code 3 to the Coded family. Comprising of SP:MC, Jubei & Dakuan, this new collective is making big waves in the scene with a killer 12” already out on Friction’s Shogun Ltd imprint and forthcoming tracks on D-Bridge’s Exit Recordings. ‘Payload’ is a hark back to the golden age of DnB, stepping beats and a gut wrenching b-line make this an essential tool for any serious DJ.A Phobia – Voltage

BS1017 Cienfuegos – Davide Carbone BS1 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. ‘Cienfuegos’: One hundred _fires in Spanish, and also one of the coolest Cuban cities. Parallels between the word and the track are hard to find, although if somewhere was burning down, the apocalyptic residue would sound something like this. ‘Deep, deep, deep’ is how some of the scenes most eulogised producers have called it. The oldest of pure analogue bass shaped using the newest techniques means this tune stands apart. Like the old days. Listen to it loud. ‘Radionuclide’ is more fun than you bargained for. Proper cutting 70‘s layered bass, over some original lead sound design and you have a bouncer that forces a smile on even those six feet under. The vocal stabs give it character and definition and the beats drive it to unrecognisable speeds. Musical, warm and bangin’. BS1 017 – The place to be.

SHB007 Non Fiction / The Mirage – Cern / Duo Infernale Shady Brain 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy A: Cern, ‘Non Fiction’ Without a doubt Cern from New Zealand is one of the most promising artists the current Drum and Bass scene has to offer. Collaborations with like-minded artists such as d-Bridge, Loxy, Phace and Misanthrop, Logistics, and Bulletproof speak for themselves. Cern’s shadybrain debut ‘Non Fiction’ underlines what he is about, providing a sick breakbeat groove right from the beginning just to develop into a true techfunk influenced sub-bass monster. AA: Duo Infernale, ‘The Mirage’ Releasing tunes on labels such as Soul:r, Timeless Recordings, Dispatch, as well as Horizons and being featured on Marcus Intalex’s top selling Fabric Live CD, Duo Infernale are two of the most successful Drum and Bass artists to break through from Germany. SUBS007 Logic Gate – Machine Code Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Subsistenz is back once again with another 1st for the dnb scene, bringing two peak-time floor peddlers from the freshest collaboration to come out of the subdivision camp – Machine Code aka Current Value & Dean Rodell – Neither of these two producers need introductions to any of the scenes they are planning to manipulate as these two heavy weights of the underground have been outputting quality release after release for over 20 years between them. Now after a few months of working the machine sat the Subdivision Studio in Berlin, the stock piled arsenal is ready to be broadcast and inflicted upon the minions. The Machine Code project formed out of a true respect and passion for Techno-orientated dance music and has been personified in this bar-raising first broadcast – Logic Gate …A. Logic Gate is kick-started with Mechanisms, a full-on techno assault that builds from a spine-chilling, vocal-fused pad that is gradually manipulated around a rhythm that pounds the living life out of its tonal timbres. The subtle manipulations in sound are brought to a head when the mechanisms turn to a 4/4-driven bass stomp, giving all and sundry a life line to clasp onto …B. Thermal Stress doesn’t let up in Logic Gates mission to remove charred brain cells from its listeners’ dusty caverns. EAR010 Heartbroken (Noah D Remix) – Lion Dub Ft. Jah Dan & Sotto Bless Earwax 12″ Vinyl
‘Earwax steps to the USA for this monster plate from New York City roots/dub veteran Liondub who collaborates here with Jamaican rising stars Jah Dan and Sotto Bless. Fellow stateside producer Noah D takes the dubstep refix duties with a floor smashing b-line. The result is an outstanding roots/dubstep crossover that is – for once – totally original. ‘Heartbroken’ sees Jah Dan & Sotto Blesstake up the mic and, bouncing between each other, lay down a vocal that is measured equally between deep and energizing. With a laid back delivery they catch a flow that rolls perfectly over Liondub’s wicked instrumental that sounds like a dubstep flavoured take on Berlin veterans Rhythm & Sound ocean deep dub style. Noah D takes the original and charges the already excellent vocals with amore dancefloor friendly re-fix. The swooping bass line that hits when the chorus drops will turn your insides out – cutting through the full sub frequency range to guarantee it will hit the right spot in any dance, any room with a system in. Drop heavy and stand proud –this is a huge version. Support from: Pinch, Plastician, N-type, RSD, MRK1, Appleblim and many more…

BASSHEAD002 Bass Low – Otto Von Schirach Basshead Music 12″ Vinyl
Take Electro Bass Noise, Gore Grind, IDM Glitch, Calliope, Breakcore Gabber Jungle, Gangsta Rap, mix them all together and what you get? Otto Von Schirach . For ‘Bass Low’ the oddball shreds hip-hop (“I always felt that hip-hop beats need shark-bite rhythms or chain-saw sounds”), corrupts Miami Bass and perverts techno, saturating his hard drive with sonic detritus . Otto Von Schirach (halfCuban / half German) was born in 1978 in the swamp infested refugee world of Little Havana Miami. As a child his grandmother practiced Santeria and White Magic, which opened his eyes to the strange and bizarre. Otto grew up listening to Miami Bass, Gore Grind, Gangsta Rap and Afro Cuban Noise. In 1995 Otto bought his first drum machine from a crack-head just 2 blocks from his mom’s house. Right away he recognized his passion for grimy diamond soaked kick drums through distorted fuzz muck. In 2003Otto worked on the Skinny Puppy album “The Greater Wrong of the Right” which scored him a 57 show tour opening for them across the USA. He scared the living shit out of all the Skinny Puppy fans night after night with his 35 minute, 3 costume change, ear punishing dance party. After 8 albums, 10,000 shows, a 4 Gigabyte Sound Library and 7 computers, what else do you want? Otto is currently working on a bunch of new collaborations with Venetian Snares, Doormouse, Gut, Ebola, Gouch and is also in the studio working on new ideas for the next Skinny Puppy record. Otto is a true Gang Banger. A true slave to the sound wave, he will always make love to speakers worldwide. BassHead Music is a label from A-Sides and Juan BassHead. The label is based in Miami, Florida and intends to focus on bass-heavy dance floor music.

SUBT006 Sparse Land – Current Value & Rodell Subtrakt 12″ Vinyl
Techno titan Dean Rodell teams up with one of DnB’s most respect producers Current Value to bring you a first taste of their shared vision of Dubstep, ‘Sparse Land’. ‘Requiem’ has a deep old skool vibe, with rich synth pads that make the hair on you neck stand up and a piano to tug on the strings of your heart. Tight, techy percussion and meaty drums bind the melodic atmospheres to form a tight package Requiem is a step beyond the average; class dubstep meets old skool electronica, the finest in the underground. For the ‘Requiem’ remix we welcome Balkansky (aka Cooh) back to the fold. His mix brings Dean and CV’sconcept piece straight back to the dancefloor. A hard-hitting dub fuelled beast that punches in all the right places and a further example of the masterful audio manipulation skill of Balkansky. If ‘Corridor’ were a film it could only be described as Event Horizon meets Blade Runner. The cold, sterile ambiances and bleak ‘sci-fi’ cynicism breed with a bassline that haunts the very kit it dances with. ‘User Error’ is collaboration with new Subtrakt signing ‘Underhill’. Perhaps the most dubby cut of the EP, but still with a sense that a little Techno and DnB may lurk beneath. This is the first of many huge Underhill tracks lined up for Subtrakt over the coming months, keep your ears open and you shall not be disappointed! Supported by: Maryanne Hobbs (BBC Radio1).

HENCH001 3Kout – Jakes Hench 12″ Vinyl
Re- Released due to demand. The first release on the now well-established Bristol dubstep label, Hench, it was fitting that the debut12” came from Papa ‘Ench himself, JAKES. Now known as the launch pad for such artists as Komonazmuk & Chasing Shadows, the Hench label is strongly responsible for the rapid growth of the dubstep scene. And with genre-shaking releases like Jakes’ ‘Rock ThaBells’ and ‘Warface’, there’s no doubt that this label is going from strength to strength. Having already dropped a seriously well received remix of Martin Buttrich’s ‘Well Done’ on 420 Recordings that went straight to Number One in the Dubstep Chart, Jakes followed up with two of his very own productions for Hench’s debut release.
A – 3KOUT – 3KOUT is pure Bristolian dubstep with deep resonant subs alongside the unique bass sound now associated with Hench. This tune is instantly recognisable and quickly received support from Mary Ann Hobbs (Radio 1), Chef, Pinch, Oris Jay and Skream to name a few. According to N-TYPE “3Kout isone of the biggest tunes on road right now – it mashes up any dance. It sounds like some mad generator starting up, moving into a full furious skank out!”
AA – 2 STEPS BACK – 2 STEPS BACK is another classic Jakes production. It’s an extension of the sound that Jakes stumbled upon when making 3Kout. You can hear Jakes’ unique sound developing throughout the track. This tune is a tried and tested weapon to have the dance floor nodding heads in time with those wonky bass rhythms.

EX7001 Yin Yang – Excision Ft. DZ EX7 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. With so much attention from club land and the media alike, Excision thought it was time to start a new imprint, geared to release the very biggest of the tracks inhis record box. Teaming up with Infectious PR who will be managing and promoting the label on his behalf, Excision is ready to kickoff EX7 (pronounced Ex-Seven, for those not in the know) with a pair of downright bangers. ‘Yin Yang’ featuring DZ is straight up LFO based dubstep at it’s finest. Featuring an ambient intro that lulls you into a false sense of security before smacking you round the face with a bass line so big it could be seen from space (that’s a ridiculous thing to say, don’t think we don’t know how ludicrous our own press releases sound). Anyone who likes to mix up electro with dubstep should beslipping this into their sets.

A. WHO’S THE HARDEST First up, staying true to his D&B roots, Eddie K brings us some fresh, fruity jungle flavours, with ‘Who’s The Hardest’.
Kicking off with a bold, brash opening orchestral strings, and booming beat, the Dr Who-style synth lead, and faded ominous vocal sampling, are spooky and atmospheric. The tune almost twists into the drop with a sudden drum roll spasm, and, as the sci-fi vocal sample repeats, “this is a journey into music and sound”. With a pounding beat and classic sci-fi effects, ‘The Shivers’ is a fantastic piece of badness. Already a favourite of Caspa’s, as well as big support by other big dubstep players, including: Plastician, N Type, Hatcha and Rossi B, get hold of this as soon as you can – it’s going to be a massive hit. www.myspace.com/djeddiekuk
