LFTD007 – The Upbeats

For the first time in its history, Lifted Music opens the door to the first 12” release by a new artist. So who should the prestigious honour fall onto? None other than New Zealand’s finest duo The Upbeats. Long time acquaintances and fans of the Lifted family, The Upbeats pack LFTD007 with two sublime tracks, the first ‘Binge Drinker’, followed by a remix of Ewun‘s `Screw Up’ (from LFTD001).

a) Binge Drinker

The devil horns at the ready, as The Upbeats bring the Rock N Roll vibe to the A-side. A heavy crescendo of drums cumulate in a drop laced with so much funk, bounce and head funk, bounce and head banging – no one can resist moving. ‘Binge Drinker’ is The Upbeats at their best. Raw, high-energy, blast-beats clashing with big heavy basslines and eerie synths, the infectious head-nodding that is ‘Binge Drinker’ has only one result. Whiplash.

b) Screw Up (The Upbeats Remix) – Ewun

Ewun’s ‘Screw Up’ featured on the debut Lifted release, and stood out for it’s unrivalled aggression aided by a notorious anthem-styled vocal. An instant hit, it would take something a bit special compliment Ewun’s approach. Step in The Upbeats. Driven by the same vocal, a twistingly raw bassline that has proven to ignite any crowd, NZ’s finest have rivalled the original – a feat hard to achieve for any remix. Full of energy, an in your face assault dons the B-side for LFTD007.

Promo’s released 14th September 2009. Fully Released on 5th October 2009.

BRD004 – Utopia

Approaching the 4th release, and with it’s catalogue of unique artists, the snowball effect is in full motion for Breed12inches. After recruiting Russian duo Utopia back onto their successive 12” with another big release, the Breed12inches camp have now seen all eyes drawn to them, following huge play and support by some of the scene’s major players. Breaking away from the moniker of `Lifted Music’s sister label’, it was only a matter of time before audiences and DJ’s perceived Breed to be a rising label in its own right, one they also hope will be around for a long time. With BRD005 already in the final stages, and a handful of global promo mixes lined up to co-incide with the release, it really is up and up from here for Breed12inches.

a) Diamonds Shine

Hailed as one of the most original sounding tracks to be released this year, Utopia combine an elegant glistening melody with rolling drums and a stomach churning sub. Think a revamped ’31 seconds’, with more electro influence and high energy – all combined with a distinct sound and a taste of Russian vodka, then your halfway there. Originality at its best.

b) Scan Me

That trademark Utopia style is in full motion with ‘Scan Me’. Big beats, a catchy melody with a club-shaking low end, the B side is yet another demonstration as to why Utopia are being lined up as the next big production force within Drum and Bass. Glitches, intelligent edits and a stomping kick-snare combination complete a solid 12″ from Russia’s greatest export.

Promo’s released 14th September 2009. Fully Released on 5th October 2009.
