New D ‘n’ B Releases

NZ009 Timeslip – Cern Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Samurai Music returns with yet another heavyweight kiwi talent Cern, for his debut release on the label. Cern has spent the last few years blazing a trail of intricate tech flavoured funk on labels like Critical, Renegade Hardware, Symptom, Shady Brain, Fokuz and is currently working on a future project for Concord Dawns’ Uprising label. ‘Timeslip’ treats the tech step template like a jagged worn jigsaw, taking it’s pieces, sharpening them into potent weaponry and forcing them into new sequences. Shuddering sliding rhythms pound their ingenious funk with the soaring Reese in the second breakdown never failing to draw cheers of delight from appreciative dancefloors. ‘Eastern Gates’ is a subtle rolling slice of funk, laden with a gorgeous eastern female vocal that saunters over what has become a trademark tech groove from Mr Cern. DJ Support from DJ Hype, D Bridge, State Of Mind, Concord Dawn, and many more.

Rolling RARE funk breaks, deep low subs, carefully placed breakbeat flicks and switches between Dancehall vocals ooze DnB experience from the first few seconds. Listen, learn and enjoy !! On the flip the production duo deliver the soulful ‘Illuminism’ which could easily be an instramental hiphop track if not for the 175 bpm tempo. Double bass pulls, xylophones and chords take centre stage and relay a sparse mood coupled with Nucleus and Paradox’s shuffling breakwork making a great contrast to the flip’s Esoterica. Just like the outer label artwork states, lets ‘KEEP JUNGLE ALIVE’.

NSGNL004 CCTV / Factory 5 – Phace & Noisia / Misanthrop Neosignal 12″ Vinyl
Heading into round four, Phace and Misanthrop firmly apply the pressure, making sure you understand that things are far from a game, and all bets are off. A. Phace and Noisia ‘CCTV’ Up first is the long awaited release of ‘CCTV’. Characterized by the simple, 3 note melody that leads things off, Noisia and Phace start the show on a very eerie, menacing note. Think of a horror movie: you’re walking through a dark, murky corridor with nothing more than a flashlight to both keep you company and shed light on the situation. Suddenly, out of nowhere, this massive ogre springs through the wall you just walked down, nipping at your heels, as you kick into a full sprint in the opposite direction. Just as you round the corner, what do you see? The flashing red light of a closed circuit surveillance camera.. We’re watching you. We dictate the pace. B. Misanthrop ‘Factory 5′ After escaping that nightmare (relatively) unscathed, you happen into a large, barren warehouse. It looks like some futuristic vehicles or weaponry was created in this facility years prior. Your flashlight is still emitting light, and just when you realize that you’ve hit a deadend, you also come to the realization that the deadend is infact a huge mechwarrior, focusing in right on you. That red laser beam coming from its head isn’t welcoming, is it? Back on the chase. Misanthrop Industries has created some frightening beasts in its time, but this one is downright spooky! What other outfits are bringing you aural soundscapes this vivid?

New D ‘n’ B Promos

BRD004 Diamonds Shine – Utopia Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
Approaching the 4th release, and with it’s catalogue of unique artists, the snowball effect is in full motion for Breed12inches. After recruiting Russian duo Utopia back onto their successive 12” with another big release, the Breed12inches camp have now seen all eyes drawn to them, following huge play and support by some of the scene’s major players. Breaking away from the moniker of ‘Lifted Music’s sister label’, it was only a matter of time before audiences and DJ’s perceived Breed to be a rising label in its own right, one they also hope will be around for a long time. With BRD005 already in the final stages, and a handful of global promo mixes lined up to coincide with the release, it really is up and up from here for Breed12inches.
Utopia return to the main stage of Breed12inches, following the incredible success of BRD003. The Russian duo, minus a member but equally as strong, follow up with `Diamonds Shine’ and `Scan Me’ – two more dancefloor smashers. Consistantly played by the scenes biggest, and featured thoroughly in various promo mixes and podcasts, Utopia are slowly becoming a name on the lips of the scene. Available on 12″ and digitally MP3, BRD004 is an absolute must have.
DIAMONDS SHINE – Hailed as one of the most original sounding tracks to be released this year, Utopia combine an elegant glistening melody with rolling drums and a stomach churning sub. Think a revamped ’31 seconds’, with more electro influence and high energy – all combined with a distinct sound and a taste of Russian vodka, then your halfway there. Originality at its best.
SCAN ME – That trademark Utopia style is in full motion with ‘Scan Me’. Big beats, a catchy melody with a club-shaking low end, the B side is yet another demonstration as to why Utopia are being lined up as the next big production force within Drum and Bass. Glitches, intelligent edits and a stomping kick-snare combination complete a solid 12″ from Russia’s greatest export.

C4CUK008 Age Of Terror – Cause 4 Concern C4C Recordings 12″ Vinyl
It might have no military application, but that doesn’t stop Age of Terror from being a sonic weapon. 40 seconds to load and aim, 20 seconds to charge, and BOOM – bodies flying everywhere on the dancefloor. Driven by a dominant mid range riff and supported by energetic beats, this act of aural terror is typical c4c turning the screws to force confessions on the ‘floor. Scatter Brain – Simple hats and ominous pads are soon joined by percussive snippets and hellish bass overtones. The suspense ends just after a minute in whereupon the drop delivers a stark sonic image; choppy, fractured beats surround a raw bassline that sounds demonic. Will mess with your head just like the title says. DJ Support: Andy C, Friction, Hype, Bailey, Goldie, Gridlok, Fierce, Phace, Dieselboy, Zinc, Ed Rush, Bad Company, Noisia plus many more…

SUB005 Dub Sessions I – Shed SubSolo 12″ Vinyl
Displaying his excellent production skills within techno, Shed moves over to straight up dub sessions with the ‘Dub Shed Sessions I’ on SubSolo. Fierce bass meditative drops circles around the excellent atmospheric keyboard patterns, combined in a way that sounds both fresh and unique, but still rating 100% on Shed’s own trademark sound. Leaning towards a bit of contemporary straight dub techno with ‘Dub Shed – STP Remix’, the focus is on a more direct and present take on the tracks progression, rather than inviting the listener into an already set-up wall of sound. Shaking off the melody from the centre, the spacious patterns reveal themselves as the extreme basslines comes in, removing all doubt about the direction of the track. Taking the very straight up techno track from ‘WAX No. 10001′ B side, Shed displays yet another moniker(?) as Panamax, fusing the same linear groove from the original but taking the tempo down to inhumane tempo and filling the already colourful spectrum with wide percussion and even more slow building electric synthesizer swirls. review taken from the http://thefuturist.se

Very Limited White Label Promo. Dj Silkie provides his debut single on Cloqworq Recordings, which consists of two tracks written especially for this in house label. This is the first release since this producer has proved his talent time and time again with a string of releases over the past two years on the infamous deep medi recordings and not to mention the groundbreaking album ‘City Limits Vol. 1’. Dj Silkie And Anti Social Ent. as a collective are definitely ones to watch in 2009/2010 ‘step aside’ is a clever combination of hard hitting bass and breaks with the synthy, melodic and soulful elements as expected from this producer – dark and moody with a jazzy twist. this track drops into what can only be described as low end sub bass over a tribal beat pattern which is enough to shake up any dancefloor – a real stomper ‘illegal immigrant’ comes with similar vibes on the b side, starting off with emotive, dubesque pads and dropping with low down sub stabs over another unconventional but highly effective beat. this represents the other side to the anti social sound which can only be described of as the liquid/deeper dubstep sound. both tracks have had support on the highly acclaimed rinse fm on a weekly basis (www.rinse.fm) and are receiving heavy rotation from djs such as Skream, Mala And N-type in the clubs and not to mention major dubstep icons such as Hatcha from kiss 100 and Maryanne Hobbs from radio 1, this highlights the versatility of these tracks and the potential to cross into dj sets from different genres – a real must for all serious dubsteppers worldwide.

STEAK001 1975 – Mr Gasparov / Octa Push Steak House Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Hanuman and Atki2’s (aka Monkey Steak) Steak House Imprint will be the label to watch in the next 12 months. Steak House are about to unleash a devastating series of 12”s of pure carnival fire from both established and up and coming producers. STEAK 001 brings together the hottest Global Bass talent from the Iberian Peninsula: Octa push and Mr Gasparov.
MR GASPAROV – 1975 Mr Gasparov is Lisbon’s premier purveyor of intelligent Bass Music. Using
graphics tablets, midi controllers and a synth made from an old McDonalds till point, Mr Gasparov makes intricate, bass heavy dub techno/two step crossovers that will destroy any dancefloor with enough detail to keep the experimental heads’ attention.1975 is a slow build 2step workout with skittery beats and thumping sub that delivers in all the right places. Think El-B meets Aphex Twin under a tropical sky. Support from Scuba, Emma Warren, Freak Camp, Conspira,
OCTA PUSH – AI NADIA & LAIKA LIKES IT Octa Push were formed when Portuguese Bass Music pioneer Conspira challenged producers Mushug and Dizzycutter to join forces and create a totally live dance music project. Their unique fusion of Bashment, UK Garage and Dubstep with other elements like Afrobeat and Techno has put them at the forefront of the Iberian electronic music scene with explosive performances at places like SONAR, Glade and Fabric. Ai Nadia is a throbbing afro-step monster. Shuddering sub bass and chanted vocals collide to create something very special indeed. Laika Likes it combines sweet female vocals, broken garage beats, and pounding bass to devastating effect. This is a tune firmly for the hips.Support from Buraka Som Sistema, TRG, Jahcoozi, Ghislain Poirier, Ben UFO, Cardopusher, BokBok, Reso, Sinden, Sub Swara
“Two tracks of Carnival Bass business from Portuguese duo Octa Push make up the Killers on this first EP for Monkey Steak’s new label.(It’s) a cheeky street riot that Shakes its batty wildly at any notion on genre constraint.”Allan McGrath, DJ Mag KILLERS section
“Two artists from Portugal show how dubstep’s mongrelinfluence continues its inexorable global spread, catalysinghybridisation between different genres wherever it goes… These tracks… recall early Chicago house, but where Mr Gasparov kneels to the churchy, upward-reaching side of the sound, Octa Push gets down and sweaty in the most profane, relentlessly jacking way.”Joe Muggs, The Wire
“‘1975’ is a woozy piece of two-step infused house that gradually layers up over its length, from the sparsest of synthetic melodies to an eerie carnival of sampled voices and dizzying instrumental tessellation. ‘Ai Nadia’ kicks the reverse off in fine form, its tightly syncopated beat loaded with elements from a whole host of different genres – the propulsive skip of garage, funky’s tribal machinations and the grimey crunch of kuduro. It’s the best thing on here by a long way, …The fast and furious garage hybrid of ‘Laika Likes It’ wears its UK influences more overtly, a little bit of London attitude ensnared in its suggestive female vocals and bubbling subs.”′Rory Gibb, Sonic Router

WICKEDA001 A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe (Ramadanman Refix) – Wickeda Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hand stamped ltd edition of 500 180g vinyl. In early 2009, Ramadanman was approached by the British Council to participate in a cultural project between the UK and Bulgaria. The Bulgarian public voted for a top 10 of their favourite 90’s Bulgarian pop songs, which were then offered to three UK producers to remix (the others being Hexstatic and Craggz & Parallel Forces). Ramadanman chose the Wickeda song “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” (“And I and Bobby, We are Both Drinking Coffee”), and remixed it. The remix was premiered at a British Council‐organised club night in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, and beforehand, Ramadanman gave a remix workshop session to local producers. Wickeda are a Bulgarian rock band with a strong following. “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” was a hit single from their first album Revolution which was released in 1999 and sold over 30,000 copies. Today, Wickeda continue to tour Bulgaria as well as Europe, with regular festival dates.

CHST007 Twilight / V (Pinch Remix) – Distance Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
Fresh from tours in the USA and Australia, Distance commits two more of his killer dubplates to vinyl, putting an evil smirk on the face of Dubstep DJs and fans everywhere. Now seven releases in, the Chestplate imprint is well and truly established as a buy-on-sight label. This time around sees a new Distance anthem on side A, accompanied by a Pinch reversion of Distance’s modern classic ‘V’ on the flip. Twilight is Distance in primetime dancefloor destruction mode. No messin’! The theremin like spooky ambient melodies oscillate and brood, making way for the trademark Distance crunching riff. It smacks of Distance on top of his game. It slays and it dips, only to come back harder. This one should remind the Dubstep new skool that you don’t have to tear your brain out to make tear out. Turn the 12 over and original badman, Bristol lynchpin Pinch, comes correct with his version of the Distance speaker wrecker V. Pinch twists up and reconfigures the original into a new sonic horror show. This should be the office ambience of torture chambers everywhere. Pinch suppresses the drive and riff of Distance’s version, accentuating the more unnerving elements; yes it’s subtle, but it’s not any less devastating. If the system packs enough punch, this one will literally turn guts. Major support comes from the crop of discerning dubstep DJs, with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. Distance fans can also check out his brand new album entitled Repercussions, out now on Planet Mu, accompanied by a second CD of all the Chestplate tracks to date.

DBZ003 Motivational Poster / Used To Be (Scuba Remix) – Tenchu Dub:iouz Records 12″ Vinyl
Viennese producer Tenchu is no greenhorn, no newcomer prodigy. Instead the 27 year old is one of Austria’s finest having earned his stripes many times over in the country’s prolific drum n bass scene. One half of producer duo Dubfiction, Tenchu graces the third release of nascent label Dub:iouz Records with two of his latest tunes. A side “Motivational Poster” is nothing short of a killer dance floor stomper defining the label’s identity. AA side “Used To Be”, especially under the skilful treatment of non other than Hotflush Recordings owner Scuba, listeners bear witness to another genre central dubtastic IDM tune. PL006 Hypothermic EP – Excision Vs The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
Redhot hitman Excision meets Paradise Lost labelheads The SubDivision on this longawaited deep, dark funk release, the Hypothermic EP. Hypothermic brings gangsta vocal licks together with the baddest of basslines and slick percussion which combine to sickening effect to devastate the dancefloor. Battered on dubplate by DJs across the spectrum, from Headhunter to Djunya to SPL and the list goes on. Flipside contains the equally sick, but totally different Hypothermic RMX, from the likes of Bristols finest, Komonazmuk, who together with Player 1 mutates the tune into a feast of warped and spaced out basslines which give a different feeling but the same effect, devastation. This one has been cut on dub by dubstep dons throughout the UK and you will no doubt have heard this one at your favorite venue. Winding up the release is the ultradark Titanium, which features heavy guitar riffs and bleak pads, making you want to punch your mother in the stomach. One for the hardcore and headstrong. Quality here, don’t sleep on this.
