New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT043EP Noir EP – Rockwell Critical Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
Rockwell is a name on everyone’s lips. As if from nowhere he’s managed to get the whole drum & bass scene and more talking about him earning support from such luminaries as Fabio and Gilles Peterson. The ‘Noir EP’ comes not a moment too soon, a release to truly mark his arrival in electronic music and which looks set to turn even more heads. From the sheer sonic brilliance of the film score-inspired title track ‘Noir’ through to the skeletal break and sparse tendancies of the final ‘Tribe’, Rockwell is unfearing in his quest for dark, brooding experimentation that hasn’t been heard in years in drum & bass. An ambition to re-definine the term deep shines though on ‘Stay Calm’, a track that refreshes with glitchy FX, industrial pads and grounding bass that strikes the fear whilst the collaboration with Zero T ‘Bone Structure’ continues the theme with astounding results. Make no mistake people will double-take on this one.
An extraordinary EP that will appeal to lovers of both electronica and pure drum & bass alike. Just add an arm-chair and headphones for maximum satisfaction.

a Rockwell – Noir
b Rockwell – Stay Calm
c Rockwell Ft. Zero Tolerance – Bone Structure
d Rockwell – Tribes

EXIT019 Wrong Way – Abstract Elements Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party. “Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here. “Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre.
Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been. Check out the Fabric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track be work in the mix.

FFLP1-2 Demon Remix – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

EXIT014 Thugtronik / Thugtronika – Instra:mental Exit Records 12″ Vinyl

New Dubstep Releases

EAR013 Wetwipe Riddim – Ginz & Kool Money Kwame Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. 2009 saw the world taken by storm as the Bristol born sound of Purple w0w! infiltrated sound systems and radio stations with it’s catchy synth lines and bold approach. Focus so far has mainly been on Joker who ripped up the rule book and laughed hard at it, but a number of the big floor filler productions that helped make his name, such as the anthem ‘Purple City’, were co-produced by the more mysterious Ginz. Exclusively for Earwax Ginz unleashes a plate of bouncing messed up wonky-synth-hopdubstep- purple-whizzle with help on the buttons this time from the even more mysterious Kool Money Kwame. ‘Wetwipe Riddim’ is a Hennessy-hugging monster of a beat, showcasing Ginz’s superb production ethic and musical mastery – it’s both demented and catchy in equal measures! ‘Oreo’ sees further experiments in bendy beats that leaving you on constant catch up, complete with ankle flapping bass and more psychedelic synth work. Support from: Pinch, Joker, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, MRK1, Cotti and many more…

3024007 Remixes 2/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
The second half of the Great Lengths Remixes package offers 3 more vividly contrasting interpretations of album tracks .Almost a year on from the release of his debut album “One” and with ‘Saviour of Techno’ plaudits still bouncing off concrete walls, Berghain lynchpin Ben Klock turns in a remix of Is This Insanity that distills everything inspirational about both the club and city he calls home. Spaceape’s cracked vocal is welded to a sort of cavernous piston driven groove while traces of the original’s melody fractured into the briefest of shards fight their way to the surface only to sink back into the percussive smog. Located well outside of the heavily scrutinised UK hype centres, Manchester’s rising star Illum Sphere continues to hone his already distinct sound on the flipside’s Brilliant Orange reworking. A clanking off kilter groove rubs up against an extended mutation of the original melody that pushes the track towards a poignant climax, evoking all the ache of reaching for the stars and landing squarely on one’s face.

WHEELYDEALY005 Flip The Coin – Ben Verse Wheel & Deal Records 12″ Vinyl
Wheel & Deal Records presents two fresh cuts from the man otherwise known as the MC of drum & bass outfit Pendulum: Ben Verse. Having been a vocalist for the past fourteen years, and a producer for the past six, this year Ben delivers a pair of futuristic, energized dubstep tracks with distinct character. “Flip The Coin” is a dark, head-nodding half stepper that packs a weighty punch, utilizing fat percussive patterns with tribal undertones. Twisting, ghostly soundscapes drift in and out from above, with morphing pulses of subbass underneath. On the flipside, “Inhale” brings dubbed out, future-jungle vibes with irresistible energy and hints of mystical allure.

SFS002 El Presidente – Headhunter & DJunya Surefire Sound 12″ Vinyl
Surefire Sound’s second single release features four heavyweight producers representing the UK and North America. This innovative tag-team set brings together dub-tech pioneers collaborating on a pair of earth-moving tracks.
Leading off the release is the UK’s Tony Williams, a.k.a. Headhunter, a veteran Bristol producer with numerous releases on Tempa, alongside Joseph S. Hanks Jr, – Djunya to his mates – a stalwart SF artist whose tracks on Narco Hz, Lo Dubs and Eight FX have established him as a major player. Combing the best of their respective spacious and spacey sounds, “El Presidente” is a luminous, rolling track, equipped with pulsating bass and reverberating synth stabs. It’s truly King Tubby-style dub for the 21st century. The track is getting massive advance play from artists like Jus Wan, F and Mary Anne Hobbs, to name a few.
SF’s Dean J. Grenier, a.k.a. DJG has risen quickly in the electronic ranks via singles on Tube 10, Subway and Narco Hz that showcase his potent techy tracks. He links up with Toronto, Canada’s XI, whose releases on Formant and Immerse have lead to mixes for Sonic Router and a growing international following. “Putney Says” features an intricate, percussive rhythm that lumbers like a giant, each step punctuated by mountainous bass thumps. Sizzling analog synths, vaporous filtered pads and well-timed drops round out this effective and tension-building work.
About Surefire Sound:
Surefire Sound is a new record label presented by the Surefire music group whose goal is to showcase upcoming and established talent in electronic music. The label is part of a collection of projects under the Surefire banner including a booking agency, PR firm, and events management division. GUT001 I’m Not Her – Goldielocks Gut Instinct 12″ Vinyl
Finished copies. A co-production with Benga – the brilliantly sparse, bleepy ‘Green Eyes’ – is going to grab people’s attention, but the other three tracks here are easily as good. Sarah “Goldielocks” Akwisombe makes outstanding modernist electro-pop with dark, emotionally intense lyrical themes and a hefty DJ-friendly dubstep wallop, and is without question a talent who is here to stay. The EP is overall inspired by London, underground music scenes – 2step / garage / grime and dubstep, paranoia, relationships and concealed emotions.

A2 Goldielocks – Addict
AA1 Goldielocks – Green Eyes (with Benga)
AA2 Goldielocks – Neon Lights

BRK014 Sugar Coated Lover – Geiom Feat. Marita Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
Berkane Sol moves into a new decade with the future soul of ‘Sugar Coated Lover’. Back in ’08 Marita and Geiom blessed the dubstep scene with the certified classic Reminissin’, this time they turn their radar towards the vibrant keys and soca style drumz of UK funky.
Elements of disco, techno and house wrap themselves around Marita’s delicious vocal, with a sweet synthy steel drum melody leading up to the seriously catchy hook. Marita and Geiom take the sounds of house music both old and new and create a sophisticated hybrid that joins the dots between producers like Todd Terry, Luomo and Roska.
On the flip the unstoppable Blunted Robots team of Brackles and Shortstuff take the raw elements off to their workshop, clear some space on the bench and begin to rebuild according to their own confused specifications. They fill the CPU of the new machine with the original data, a DJ EZ set and the best bits of early Search and Destroy – after some extensive experimentation we find them both happily shockin’ out – until Shortstuff realises that most of the vocal is missing and what’s left is severely broken – so they sprinkle on an extra helping of their sweetest arpeggios in the hope that Geiom doesn’t notice.
This 12″ fits perfectly into the creative space that has opened up in UK underground dance music, taking ideas from garage, techno, dub, grime and house and melting them into exhilarating new forms.
It has found favour with all the usual suspects including – Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank (Radio1), Kode 9, Scratcha DVA, Oneman, Alexander Nut (RinseFM) and Untold.

a Geiom Feat. Marita – Sugar Coated Lover
b Geiom Feat. Marita – Sugar Coated Lover (Brackles & Shortstuff Refix)

HES011 The Bells Sketch – James Blake Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hessle Audio’s eleventh release comes from James Blake, a 21-year-old from London, who has previously released for Hemlock Recordings, as well as having an EP in the pipeline for R&S. This three track EP exclusively features his own warped and manipulated vocals. James also joins Mount Kimbie for their live shows, singing as well as playing keyboard.
“James Blake’s mongrelised, pitch-bent production style finds kinship with dubstep’s Joker and Untold, but his secret weapon is his voice: Blake sings with a sweet, honey-soaked coo that betrays his traditional background in music: one that knew the Family Stone long before it’d heard of FWD>>” – Tom Lea, Fact Magazine
Hessle Audio was formed in Leeds in early 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley. The label has released tunes by TRG, Martyn, Pangaea, Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Joe and Untold. In addition, Hessle Audio tunes have appeared on compilations by Tempa, Scape, Soul Jazz and Global Underground. Hessle Audio hold a residency at London club Fabric.

dBridge & Instra:mental launch ‘Autonomic’, the label

dBridge & Instra:mental launch ‘Autonomic’, the label

Posted 22 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks, video | No Comments

Established in early 2009 by dBridge and Instra:mental, the Autonomic Podcast series hastily captured an audience of over 50,000 listeners each month. Whilst showcasing a wealth of new and exiting music without a channel for release, they decided that the Autonomic brand should move onto bigger things and create a label and regular club night.

Having secured a quarterly night at Fabric in London, and also mixing the Fabric Live 50–dBridge & Instra:mental presents Autonomic CD, the record label was the next logical step in order to create a home for the style of music that they believe has many more avenues to explore. First up for release are two collaborative tracks:

a) dBridge / Instra:mental / Skream – Acacia Avenue

Gaining momentum week in week out on the club circuit, what at first seemed to be quite a barren track has grown into a little monster. The intro draws you in with an unexpected switch into emotive b-line stabs, but it’s the subtle drop of the heavyweight 808 sub layered with the Pro 1 and Moog arps riff that send the dance floors silly. No crash bang wallop of drums here, just a simple riff timed and executed for maximum effect.

aa) dBridge & Instra:mental – Detroid

Traveling down a moodier path than the flipside, Detroid is an Interesting fusion of influences that create something very distinctive. Taut atmospheres and whispering sound effects fabricate a background for the loosely hanging percussion groove and murmuring bass undertone. This track is riddled with trademark production styles from both dBridge and Instra:mental, put them together in the same pot and they mix smoothly into a remarkable piece of music.

NOMIC001 is due to be released in April/May 2010 on Vinyl / Digital.

AA-Side: Nphonix + Enei – Shadowdancer: Nphonix and fellow producer Enei team up to deliver a new groove for the flip. This track is a prime example what happens when the strengths of two extremely skilled producers are properly fused together. Nphonix’s signature grime and attitude and the deep atmospherics and pressure from Enei really shine through and allow for this tune to be played anywhere, anytime. This tune is rolling and pushing up to the maximum and coupled with a bassline that bounces just right to form the perfect riff guaranteed to rock it all the way out. Subtitles fans, heads up!

KSSBLK002 Blackstone / Suspense – Holdtight / Mute KSS Black Records 12″ Vinyl
Bristol-based KSS Black Records are proud to present their second vinyl release:
A: Holdtight – Blackstone – Holdtight make a welcome return with a rollicking slab of lo-fidelity sci-fi Drum & Bass. A steely backbone of percussion provides the skeleton to which a gut wrenching sub line and precision cyber-bleeps are built. Full of atmospherics and stabs Blackstone offers up a master class in layering grooves to capture the crowd. This one won’t stop until it gets you!
AA: Mute – Suspense – The flip for this fine 12inch features the brothers Mute, with a massive debut vinyl release! ‘Suspense’ has got skanker written all over it, reminiscent of the days Grooverider was dropping Adam F’s seminal track ‘Metropolis’ on dub. Modern production values are infused with the sweaty funk of 90′s dancefloor tech. Heavily influenced by the sounds of Photek and, more recently, Break with technical drum programming and a bassline to trouble any bass bin as they Looking backwards to move forward. You won’t miss it when this tune drops.. bassface time! Featuring on Bailey’s 1xtra show several times last year this is not a tune to miss out on. Both tracks have been receiving heavy support from Bailey, Lomax, Survival & Break.

This Phunkfiction release is not only the 15th release of the label but also a very special one. It features one of the greatest male voices from the UK. Phunkfiction now releases a remix of his single ‘Lay It Down’, which also contains a female rap part by the great Estelle, known from her song ‘American Boy’ with Kanye West. The remix treatment comes from one of the hottest acts in D&B at the moment: Triad stands for deep and minimalistic Drum & Bass with attitude. These guys are recently gaining massive. MG77.8 Neo (Shackleton’s Neo Bln Remix) – DJ Maxximus MG77 Recordings 12″ Vinyl
RE- Released and finally repressed on Vinyl. This release, including a Shackleton Remix, pushes the label’s usually more heavily bass-driven sound into a more percussive and profound melodic direction. ‘Neo’ has a dark and deep quality, combined with the silvery synthesizer sounds that simulate the sensation of an eerie walk through something futuristic. The remix masterfully captures this same specific atmosphere coupled with Shackleton’s signature style of typically using ethno-driven percussive rhythms, enhancing and colouring the tune with a taint of garage. ‘Israhell’ has a more upbeat character with a tremulous theme.

24-year-old Kevin McAuley began making music with a two-track mixer, a keyboard and a tape deck. NOPPA005 Desto EP – Desto Noppa Records 12″ Vinyl
“Tes La Rok kicks off the year for his Noppa label with a versatile four track EP from up & coming producer Desto. ‘Wizard Of Wor’ discharges concentrated SID-chip energy and mutant rhythm syncopations with ruthless sub-bass and a side order of pixilated gangster vibes. ‘Gremlinz’ ventures into the realm of 8-bit monsters fusing hiphop and grime aesthetics with chippy Commodore 64 bleeps and analogue synths for a definite dancefloor weapon. On the flipside, ‘Dark Matter’ creeps in with techy stabs, dubstep rhythmics and ice cold atmospheres. To top it off, the much-anticipated ‘Cold (refix)’ delves into the dark and atmospheric side of future garage before unleashing lush melodies from the frozen streets of Helsinki. DJ support from Jamie Vex’d, Blackdown, Joker, Oneman, Headhunter, Rossi B & Luca, Nick Argon and more.”

Blackdown : “Absolute Noppa!”
Joker : “2 words – Goon Music.”
Headhunter : “This one been a mainstay in my sets for months now, Noppa providing the usual sickness!”
Nick Argon : “Clean gloves hide dirty hands and Desto’s are dirtier than most.”

DP035 Jus Business – D1 Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police comes with the goods again. This time its the turn of one of dubstep’s founding fathers D1, here to show them what its all about. ‘Jus Business’ has been finding its way into the sets of all the big hitters lately. With its dark rave stabs, tripping jungle beats and pounding sub bass its not hard to see why – serious business from D1. Things couldn’t be more contrasting on the flip with the energetic party roller ‘Pitcher’. Skipping beats and a quirky lead line, with funky esq. melodies and soulful grooves – a really bouncing track. All in all another top draw release from Dub Police and a quality slab of vinyl from D1 showing us just how diverse this artist really is.

3024006 Remixes 1/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi-house community. First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape. Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies.
Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.
An integral part of every 3024 release, Erosie once again blesses this release with his inimitable visual style switching up to a monochrome design this time around.

a Martyn – Hear Me (Zomby mix)
b Martyn – Seventy Four (Redshape mix)

RWINA005 Rain City / Beatingz – Starkey Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Following on from massive releases like ‘Half Man Half Trout’ (Taz Buckfaster) and Freeze Step (South Africa’s Playdoe), Rwina welcomes Philly’s illest, Starkey, back to the fold. ‘Rain City’ is one of those tunes that could only be the product of someone at the peak of their powers. How many big dancefloor tracks manage to completely do away with the snare and rely instead on intense synth work to hype the crowd? How many tracks get support from players such as Skream, DJ Oneman and Noah D yet sound like Kraftwerk and Bach jamming on Jupiter before riding a magic rainbow to DMZ? Believe the hype, Rain City is all that.
On the flip, ‘Beatingz’ shows Starkey’s complete grasp of dynamics and arrangement, building gradually and subtly until before you know it, what began as some kind of gully-crunk brain-melt riddim has got you rushing your proverbial tits off. Almost too much to take. Heavy support by: Skream, MAH, Plastician, DJ Oneman, Baobinga/Skinnz, Blackdown!

STEAK002 Hyped Up – Monkey Steak Steak House Records 12″ Vinyl
The newly formed Steak House Records bring some much-needed carnival fire for these winter months, their sights firmly on the Trinidad carnival season. Label owners Atki2 and Hanuman take the helm on this release, enlisting the vocal talents of MC Zulu on the EP’s standout lead track ‘Hyped Up’. The party continues on the flip, with the psychedelic funky of ‘Haarlem Drift’ and the Arabic folky heater ‘Tigris Riddim’, already a firm favourite with Toddla T. Mashing up global riddims and bass heavy genre bending ruffness, they incorporate sounds from bassline to bashment, grime to dubstep to funky to soca and back again!
A1: Hyped Up feat MC Zulu is an instant party classic. Featuring the formidable vocal talents of the original badman MC Zulu. This tune is pure Soca Fire.
A2: Bombeiros! is the riddim of Hyped Up and a huge tune in its own right. Chromatic Bass and galloping Soca Beats raise the temperature on this tropical banger. One for the Airhorns Crew!
B1: Tigris Riddim. As featured on Toddla T.’s Fabriclive:47 mix. Fragments of Iraqi folk music collide with bubbling bass and tuff bashment beats. Global Bass at its finest.
B2: Haarlem Drift is a psychedelic funky anthem. Dreamy synths and punishing sub bass weave themselves around a broken tribal rhythm. Featured in Chrissy Murderbot’s massive Mad Decent Mixtape.
Sinden, DJ Mag – “There couldn’t be a more fitting title for this second 12” from the Steak House crew. Aided by the vocal firepower of MC Zulu, the lead cut is guaranteed tropical dynamite for the right kind of crowd. On the flip the tunes take a slightly deeper turn, with the heavyweight bass and slimline rhythm of ‘Tigris Riddim’ capturing the atmosphere of primal, minimal jungle at a slower BPM”.
Oli Warwick, IDJ – “Chew on a couple of amphetamines, mainline the Red Bull and pop some Nicorette patches under your eyelids; this is pumped Kuduro-esque madness. Party party!”
Markle, DJ Mag – “Hot on the heels of STEAK 001, praised by everyone from Thom Yorke to Sinden comes another 12” of karnival heat from Hanuman and Atki2’s Steak House imprint”.
Clash Magazine – “Its only STEAK 002, but Steak House threaten to build a distinctive voice. The title track from label bosses Hanuman and Atki2 is a soca/bashment speedbomb featuring hired gun MC Zulu, while ‘Tigris Riddim slows to (b)ass-wiggling dancehall speed and ‘Haarlem Drift’ gets the melodius funk. Everyone from Toddla T to Thom Yorke are on this lot. Best have a butchers”.
Support From Sinden, 2562, Toddla T, Poirier,Baobinga, Murderbot, Roska, Starkey, Bok Bok, Dub Boy.

CHST008 Menace / Beyond – Distance Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
Chestplate presents a pair of crushing singles from one of dubstep’s original heavy hitters: Distance. Both tunes have been highly anticipated; with “Menace” having been featured on Caspa’s Radio 1 Essential Mix, as well as Pinch’s Tectonic Plates Volume 2 mix CD. “Menace” is a mean half-stepper that trudges along with distorted heavy-metal guitars, crisp percussion and dark, grimy synths. It is eclipsed by “Beyond” on the flipside: A truly eyes-down riddim, marching forth into the darkness with its synesthetic tinges of guitar melodies and booming sub-bass.

HDB031 Acid / Pro Plus Ft. DOK – Terror Danjah HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Hyperdub has long been a fan of grime don Terror Danjah’s razor sharp productions, his unparalleled, skittering rhythm science, deadly riffs, brilliant technicolour synth squiggles, “gremlin cackle” signature and general ear for a catchy tune. On this first EP for the label, he showcase two strains of his many skills. ‘Acid’ cranks up the energy, with an ascending synth crashing into stuttering drums and synths. They play hide and seek with each other for a bit, before the track unexpectedly breaks into a 4 / 4 house rhythm, and then shatters into pieces again. On the flipside, ‘Pro Plus’, Terror is joined by long time collaborator DOK for a slice of their classic sound – an infectious, twisted sickly sweet synth melody wrapped around syncopated, stop start drums to mean effect

Posted 16 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Voodoo music is the new label from Offkey. In the last year Raiden has increasingly begun to explore his love for tribal & percussive based drum n bass and after a recent trip to Latin America the concept for Voodoo Music was born.

In preparation for Voodoo music this year Raiden & Khanage have been busy been creating music that has gathered ‘every set’ support and rewinds from Alix Perez, Loxy, Doc Scott, dBridge, C4C, Rockwell, Icicle, Ink & Bailey amongst others. The tracks have become anthems for the new emerging sound and its followers. Thinking with a mind toward the future we have been keeping our eyes and ears on a few emerging artists that we can develop on a long term basis- Morphy and Khanage to name a few.

Voodoo Music will also feature contributions and collaborations with Rockwell, Loxy, June Miller amongst others, each release will come with its own identity and we will be working closely with the artists to make sure their work is represented in the truest sense.
We are able to work with like minded artists within drum n bass as our work has been received very well by peers and in turn these artists are writing music specifically to fit the sound and concept of Voodoo Music.

The debut release for the label is the long in demand tracks from Raiden entitled ‘Baptism Of Fire’ b/w ‘Danzon’. Baptism Of Fire is a brooding track that thrives on holding a sense of cold tension whilst ‘Danzon’ is a latin inspired skank out that doesn’t go down the trad-latin formula but instead concentrates highly on the complex rhythms of Cuba.

The second 12″ will be another instalment from Raiden & Khanage’s ongoing collaboration with ‘Amnesia Haze’ & ’8798′, two tracks that ignited the initial spark for the Voodoo Music project during a very late in the studio between the pair.

Coming soon: Sabre – “A Wandering Journal” LP

Coming soon: Sabre – “A Wandering Journal” LP

Posted 15 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks, video | 4 Comments

Told through narrative interludes and a musical score capturing windows in our tale; ‘A Wandering Journal’ is a voyage through experimental electronica; the debut long player from London-based producer, Sabre, and the first solo artist album on Critical Music.

Hailing from north London, 27 year old DJ turned Producer ‘Sabre’ has slowly been risen through the ranks of the global electronic music fraternity, securing as he goes a reputation as a twisted yet soulful thinker, bringing a grittier sound to the deeper spectrum of the drum and bass scene and experimental electronica.

After having spent his earliest years in the Seychelles, Sabre moved to the UK in 1989. Reaching his early teens, he found a passion for Hip-Hop and turntablism, and equipped himself as a bedroom DJ. The subsequent vinyl addiction was cemented by the arrival of the Jungle Era, and overwhelmed by the richness of the music, Sabre started to purchase the occasional release eventually switching focus away from Hip-Hop entirely in the late 90’s with the arrival of more futuristic, industrial sounding drum and bass, from artists like Future Forces, Photek, Teebee and DJ Trace.

After stints on pirate radio stations such as Rude FM a course in music technology followed and armed the young DJ with a firm grasp of studio technique; the first releases came in 2002 under the guise of the collaborative ‘Intimidation Collective’ project, a two man, self- driven enterprise selling white label music from car boots straight to the shops. The profile was growing at grass roots level in the underground, and now approaching 2004, small and mid sized labels started picking up on the ‘techy/soulful’ mix of dance floor drum and bass being produced by the newcomer. The first throws at starting a brand within music came the year after with the launch of London Zu, the now retired drum and bass club night formerly held at Londons’ La Scala venue.

“Still perhaps the most exciting era of my life, around 2002-2004 when I started to first find support in this music, mingle with people who had been my heroes for years, finally knowing that I had a niche and a following, which is all I really wanted.”

In the years since those first opportunities, Sabre’s grown to emerge as a global DJ with residencies across Europe, and secured releases and remix work for labels including Metalheadz, Renegade Hardware, Critical and Shogun Audio. Spanning many styles, this initially dance floor-orientated catalog has since evolved itself towards a more minimal and experimental outlook, resulting in 2007 with a commission from Capitol films to contribute toward the film score for the Tony Kaye feature ‘Black Water Transit’. The view looking to the future is spread across the musical and multimedia spectrum.

“Writing ‘A Wandering Journal’ has been liberating beyond expression. It’s a project I’ve had developed and hibernating for so long that looking back, I know that if it’d been left any longer it wouldn’t have been realised to its true potential. All the unwritten details of the concept and the loose narrative would have faded in my mind. Creating it when I did, whilst the concept was still strong in my mind, and my musical output was amongst the most free-spirited of my career was perfect timing. And it’s spurned me on to be even more ambitious with what I create in the future. I have to approach a new frontier now that this album is complete, and the current multimedia landscape is the perfect playground in which to elaborate on what I stand for creatively.”

New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT042 Late Drop – Break Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
2009 has been a good year for Critical, having built yet further on its reputation as being one of the most forward-thinking underground drum and bass labels in the scene. Appearances from Spectrasoul, Sabre, Serum & Vapour paved the way for the heavily acclaimed Critical Sound compilation that saw label boss Kasra representing the ‘Future of D&B’ at Fabric’s 10th birthday and even guesting on BBC Radio 1. Now just in time for Christmas Critical serve up one last delicious 12” before the new year from the mighty Break. Smooth’s the word as ‘Late Drop’ gets under way with lazy-day pads and a light stepping break that runs through the DJ-friendly intro all the way to the breakdown. Wait for the typically gnarly Breakbass though and then it’s throttle down, away we go on this late night tech-roller that oozes class and sees Critical’s eyes set firmly on the dance floor once again. ‘Crunchy’ kicks off with some interesting orchestration and a simple stepping break that flowsunderneath jungle samples and a distant vocal. It’s all about the distorted b-line though as Break doeswhat he does best letting it worm its way into your psyche. No-nonsense D&B to move your feet. DJ support from Friction, Break, Cyantific, Spectrasoul, Marky, Nu Tone, Logistics and Kasra amongst others.

DIS035 Irreverse – Spinline Dispatch Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Dispatch go on a deeper tip with a brand new release and a debut from Spineline, perhaps this is a sign of things to come from Dispatch, their recent digital-only release was from an artist called Kharm who had tracks featured on the Autonomic podcast, these tracks from Spineline are equally as minimal and fresh, rolling clappy beats and deep soundscapes are the order of the now. Support from Ant TC1, Survival & Rockwell.

FFLP1-1 Optimus Prime – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl

It will take you on a journey through many different moods and styles of Drum and Bass. From Light to Dark this album has everything! Once Again! Get bitten!!! The concept behind Vampire Records is the relation between the nocturnal behavior of Clubbers and Vampires. Vampire has constant evolution and is a platform for established artists and up and coming talent. The birth of the label was at the end of 2006. It has grown from strength to strength over the last couple of years. Vampire is still growing to this day but it has staying power in the world of Drum and Bass. It is up to its 10th single release and on April 1st 2009 it released its first label album “Once Bitten Twice High”. All releases on the label are still selling which proves that the music has shelf life and is non-disposable. BRIG014 For Love Or Money – D Kay & Concept Brigand Music 12″ Vinyl
Here comes the next 12″ from Vienna’s finest. Mastermind DKAY teams up with the the now firmly established CONCEPT, who, after having proved his production skills on various releases, adds the funk to the BRIGAND flavour. Epic 70s horns and house vocals set the tone for this high roller, called FOR LOVE OR MONEY. Favoured by Fabio, High Contrast and the likes, it does not only get the party started, but is also a pleasurable listening experience. Old school analogue production technique has been applied to give this tune a warm and driving edge, that seems to be missing in most computer based productions these days. So turn up the speakers and enjoy the sonics and the music.
For the flipside, long time partner RAWFULL joins DKAY in the studio once again. IN YOUR NAME is a bit more minimalistic than other tunes by the duo also known as ILLSKILLZ. A deep but angry reese bassline and a hypnotic synth riff are the trademark sounds in this dreamy piece of music, that will excite both party goers and home listeners alike. Here is what others had to say about this release:
MARCUS INTALEX on IN YOUR NAME: “Been starting my sets off with this recently.. sets the mood perfecty…”
LOGISTICS on FOR LOVE OR MONEY: “DKAY proves once again that soulful tunes can still have impact on the dancefloor, loving this one!!”

DRUNK015 Don’t Sleep – Hyetal & Shortstuff Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Punch Drunk launches into 2010 with colourful cuts to beat the freeze in the form of two hot collaborations from Hyetal & Shortstuff. The hyper synth frenzy of Don’t Sleep and the technicolour visions of Ice Cream have been heavily rotated by Jackmaster, Brackles, Untold, Gemmy, Ben UFO, 2562, Oneman, Starkey amongst others.A flurry of releases in 2009 put Hyetal at the centre of a Bristol second wave of producers. Having caught the ear of Mary Anne Hobbs and subsequently appearing on her Planet Mu compilation ‘Wild Angels’, Hyetal has also seen releases for Bristollian labels Reduction and Soul Motive, and also for Texas based Formant Recordings. Releases on Planet Mu, Ramp Recordings, Berkane Sol and Pollen throughout 2009 have seen Shortstuff assert himself as a key mover in the new wave of grime, garage, funky and hip hop influenced beats and basslines infiltrating the UK underground. Shared roots in the forward thinking Nottingham Futureproof and Wigflex scenes, Shortstuff has recently launched his own imprint, Blunted Robots, alongside Brackles.

DKX001 66/31 – binary sequence Dark Arx 12″ Vinyl
For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).
DKX002 by Dark Arx will be released in March 2010.

BOKA024PT1 Chainsaw Calligraphy Remixes (Part 1) – 16bit Boka Records 12″ Vinyl
The long awaited 16bit – ‘Chainsaw Calligraphy’ remixes are upon us, this is Part 1 of 2 featuring the JAKES and PROPATINGZ mixes.
JAKES, the founding member of the HENCH crew was an obvious target to carry out the Chainsaw remix, being a big fan of the original and regularly rinsing the track out in the raves, he’s given the track the signature Jakes sound, psychedelic bass-lines and heavyweight percussion, watch out for the sample too, see if you recognise it. Heavy support coming from N-TYPE (Rinse FM), MISTAJAM (Radio1), WALSH, TRUTH, MARLOW and HATCHA (Kiss FM).
UK born but now living in LA PROPATINGZ has his musical history in the Breaks scene, a long purveyor of the sound and a regular on the live scene he has more recently switched his style and has been directly influenced by 16bit’s sound. He has big releases lined up and is beginning to cause quite a stir with his tracks featuring on Radio 1 etc…..def one to look out for. His remix was written over the course of a year, alot of blood sweat and tears have gone into it, and the listener will realise this when he/she hears it, devastating, pure and simple. Support coming from OOAH and the GLITCH MOB crew, AKIRA KITESHI and N-TYPE (Rinse FM).

MEDI025 Elephant Dub / Heavy As Stone – Mark Pritchard Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
What’s to say about the phenomenal production talent of Mark Pritchard that has not already been said? Mark has been lovingly producing cutting edge music for some two decades now under numerous music guises and aliases such as Global Communications, Reload, Troubleman, Jedi Knights and most recently under his Harmonic 313 moniker for Warp Records. Along the way Mark has captured the attention of the most discerning industry heavyweights, be it DJ Jazzy Jeff extolling the virtues of his Harmonic 33 project, Kenny Dope raving about his Troubleman output, or tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Benji B eagerly anticipating the next email from Mr Pritchard bearing the fruits of his labour in the studio.
Over the last four years Mark has become entranced with the bass weight of dubstep from such pioneering figures as Mala, Kode9, Benga and Skream to name but a few. Nowhere can this be more clearly heard than on his Harmonic 313 LP and his jiggy anthem ‘Wind It Up’ featuring Sa-Ra’s Om’Mas Keith released on Hyperdub in 2009.
Mark’s first release on Mala’s DEEP MEDi Musik imprint showcases both facets of his production talent. The appropriately titled ‘Elephant Dub’ rumbles and shakes with earth shattering density and is relentless in its sub bass charge, which poses problems on lesser sound systems which have been known to give up the ghost or simply shut down in the face of such an onslaught. On the flip ‘Heavy As Stone’ takes us in a completely different direction, maintaining a deeper, organic vibe with percussive, hypnotic drum patterns and a driving double time bass. A little something for everyone then.

This groundbreaking project is trail-blazing the collaboration between Dubstep and Hip-Hop, with stomach-pounding, bass-thumping guttural beats, and gully, gritty and grimy lyrics that break into the next decade in the chapters of each respective genre’s history. With Scuba, Parson, Trillbass, Dakimh, DZ, Rogue Star, Stenchman, Datsik & many more producing not remixes, but complex reinterpollations that include a veritable goldmine of Wu-Tang verses from the vaults that feature Raekwon, Ghostface Killa, RZA, GZA, Method Man, U-God & Masta Killa, Wu affiliates Killah Priest, Bronze Nazareth, Prodigal Sunn, Solomon Childs, Son One & more, and guest spots from Busta Rhymes, MF Doom, Pimp C, Three 6 Mafia, Ras Kass, Vast Aire, Canibus, Lord Jamar & many more, this one of a kind compilation is at the forefront of an emerging cultural and musical blend that is taking place on the margins of the mainstream, but will be talked about for years to come….

IME015 000 / Slippin – XI Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Toronto based XI makes his immerse debut having caught the eye with his recent release on OffRoad. 000 with its quirky, hypnotic vocal alongside the relentless sub dares people not to get lost within its enveloping warmth. On the flip, Slippin is another militant sub work out, but with a gradual build into a twinkling electro soundscape, with some rather rude bass stab action to reward the long play listener.

STORM016 Solid State – Emalkay Storming Productions 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Promo’s. Fresh off the back of the massive single ‘When I Look At You’ & ‘AGS’ on sister label Dub Police. Emalkay steps up to Storming Productions with two wicked tracks. They have been tearing up dancefloors worldwide over the last couple of months. Both remaining permanent fixtures in the sets of Caspa, Benga, Skream, The Others, N-Type, Hatcha and just about anybody who is anybody in dubstep right now. Solid State is a brutal anthem that has been melting a few faces as of late. The track has a dark and mystical intro with drums tougher than Mike Tyson’s knuckles. This is all before dropping into an unforgiving crunching bass that will bring any dancefloor to submission. On the flip is the heavyweight ‘Battlesuit’ this is a dark roller with a real swing. An atmospheric soundscape with rolling drums that don’t prepare you for the warping sub bass. This bassline will smack you in the face at the drop, as the track seemingly morphs and progresses into a dark techy monster. Another essential release from Emalkay and a welcome return of one of dubstep’s foundation labels.

HDB030 Natty / Ganja – DVA HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Rinse FM’s breakfast show host, DVA is a producer with a unique take on the UK Funky bug, blending the stiff 8-bar funk of grime with a super-supple rhythmic sensibility, sewing neon colours with a laid back precision into his tracks. ‘Natty’ is a prime example; drums stagger like they’re about to topple over, squelchy bass synths lock together a tough tribal drum pattern, liquid metal trickles around in the mix, and these contrasting elements react with explosive results on the dancefloor. On ‘Ganja’, a cartoonish ring-tonefriendly synth melody worms its way around tight soca-esque drums and housey organ stabs. Factor in the depth-charge 808 subs, steel drums and sparingly used ragga chat and you’ve got a technicolour Hyperdub debut fresh for 2010.

Coming soon: Hench Mixtape Vol.1

Coming soon: Hench Mixtape Vol.1

Posted 11 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks, video | 1 Comment

Within a few years, Jakes has gone from being one of the big name MCs of the drum and bass world to now being one of the most talked about Producers in Dubstep. In a very short space of time, the progression towards his now trademark style has been applauded by many – and not limited to the Dubstep scene.

In 2009, the release of The Jakes Project, which included anthems such as Rock Tha Bells and Warface, demonstrated Jakes’ ability to straddle genres with his aptness for innovation and style remaining intact. With his own productions receiving widespread support from as wide- ranging DJs from Skream to Crookers to Mary Anne Hobbs to Gaslamp Killer, Jakes has gone on to produce remixes that have topped download charts and he regularly receives extensive radio coverage. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that his label has a host of talented artists releasing their productions through the HENCH imprint.

Having masterfully mixed the HENCH Mixtape (Vol. 1), Jakes introduces several of his unreleased works into the label showcase. Featuring VIP’s of many of his previously released tracks; the mix offers something new even for the hardiest of HENCH fans. Providing a platform for both established artists as well as those who are less familiar amongst the scene’s heads – one of the mix’s defining accomplishments is the uniformity in standard of production.

Komonazmuk, who is currently writing his debut album that will be released on HENCH later in 2010 has also made a stunning tune to lend to the mix (You Fo’). Giant’s hugely successful Swoosh and a VIP of Drumstick, along with VIP’s of Eddie K’s debut 12” on the label also feature. Tracks from the unmistakable Chasing Shadows and Lost are dropped into the mix, which will only add to the splash that these young producers are currently creating in the music scene.

Not to be overshadowed by the more established artists, those who are new to the dubstep world truly stamp their mark on the Mixtape. Expect to take notice of HENCH’s most recent signing, Mensah – currently the talk of Bristol after having his production featured in TV Series, CSI, and having productions lined up for future releases on Jakes’ label. Tek-One has also been making a big impact, and HENCH were lucky to pick up ‘Broken String’ – surely a future classic. Young-gun producer, Minus, adds flavour to the mix with his debut release, Nails.

With exciting and genre-breaking tracks dotted throughout this compilation, the HENCH Mixtape (Vol. 1) provides an accurate snapshot of the accomplishments of Jakes and his label to date. With such established and rising stars cued to make further releases on the label, HENCH will continue to remain at the forefront at the boundary-pushing Dubstep scene.
