New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT044 Canopy – FD, Hydro & Keza Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
New blood alert! Bringing through yet more untapped talent is the people’s choice, Critical Music, who bring us the debut release from a trio of boxfresh producers that’s already been doing damage with those lucky enough to have it. With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one. Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special. Then on to ‘Remorse’ and the guys spook things out a little with a ghostly whispered samples and an off-kilter break rolling under paranoid synth stabs and pads. As more booming subs kick in the pace picks up with shuffling snares and heavily filtered sonics that fill the speakers to drive it forward hard, while still retaining a huge sense of space that’ll see this in the DJ boxes at the deeper end of the spectrum.
Big support from Nu:Tone, Jubei, Spectrasoul, Alix Perez, Kasra, Logistics, Sabre and more.

As a promoter, he helped to throw some of the first raves and jungle events in the East Coast’s Mid-Atlantic region. And, as a musician, he is responsible for numerous releases and remixes on labels such as Vibez, Covert Operations, Vampire, Nexus (Good Looking), Levitated, Red Mist, Testflight, Elektra/Warner Brothers and more. CYAN033 Dark Times (State Of Mind Remix) – Bulletproof, Mindscape & Tiki Cyanide Recordings 12″ Vinyl
As a follow up remix 12” to the “DARK TIMES-DESPERATE MEASURES” LP, Bulletproof and Cyanide Recordings enlisted the remixing skills of two names synonymous with pushing the boundaries in the art of cutting edge beats. Fellow Kiwis, STATE OF MIND step up to the plate to deliver an absolutely tearing rollout of one of LP title tracks “DARK TIMES”. Comparable in style to tracks like “Bring it on” this remix has been smashing its way around the world for quite some time now, and state of mind show why they are such a force to be reckoned with when it comes to remixing hard hitting Dance floor tunes. Definitely one of their finest remixes to date. On the flipside, Still enjoying the success of his new album on NEOSIGNAL, Cyanide welcomes back to the roster, the one and only “MISANTHROP”. His rendition of Bulletproof Psidream & Doses LINE OF SIGHT takes the idea of remixing to a whole new level. Incorporating minimal elements of the original and giving them that futuristic Misanthropic twist is why he was the man signed up for the job.

RDR001 Your Way / Daydreamin – Netsky Radar Records 12″ Vinyl
Drum&bass has been booming in Belgium for some time. At the spearhead of the movement is Murdock, a dj who has been a weekly guest on Belgian national radio for years, and plays to thousands of people at all of Belgium’s biggest festivals, year in, year out. Coinciding with the release of his Jungle Fever mix cd, he now launches Radar Records, inspired by the incredible talent of his protege Netsky, an artist who has risen through the ranks of drum&bass like few have done before him. It will come to no surprise that the first release on this newly founded label is by the hands of this prodigy and with the smooth stylings of ‘Your Way’ (over 140.000 hits on Youtube) and the massive dancefloor liquid anthem that ‘Daydreamin’ is set to become, this looks like a sure winner. In the future more Netsky oddities will appear on Radar, but Murdock himself and friends slash artists like Jenna G are destined to make an appearance as well. The first 12inch has already gained support by Grooverider, Fabio, London Electricity and many more.

CRIT045 Redlines – Total Science Ft. Riya Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. The original jungle dons push all the right buttons here as they team up with Riya for a sumptuous vocal excursion like no other. ‘Redlines’ has already been given the thumbs up by the likes of Mistajam and Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1/1xtra and it’s not hard to see why. A solid locked groove rolls from the start on this one with a polished break and beautiful melancholic piano hook that draw you in before the real treat begins; when Riya’s gorgeous vocal drops in your heart will melt.
Effortless audio bliss for all the lovers out there. Things then toughen up 10-fold on the flip as the Total Science party boys drop ‘Skinz’, a crisp and dry piece of Bristol-esque D&B with a thugged-out b-line that’s had clubs shaking all over for the past six months.

MODULE001 More Than I Can Take / Silhouette – Lenzman Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Critical Music are proud to announce for 2010 their all-new sibling imprint, Modulations. Already known as a camp with the utmost values in exceptional music and artistic design, Modulations promises to be something very special indeed. The schedule will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. So first up is the much touted Lenzman who’s been handed the privilege of opening up Modulations for business and what a job he’s done. ‘More Than I Can Take’ is a gorgeous piece of subtle audio bliss that sets the standard high for future releases to come. Light pads, sparkling key tones and a staggered break pave the way on the intro up to a luscious drop of warm bass and a male vox. Things drift smoothly on with the addition of a gnarly mid-range that toughens things up a little whilst all the time retaining the initial spacial, deep vibe. Lovely.‘Silhouette’ on the other side then takes things in a slightly moodier direction with a simple 2-step break leading the way but with more of those ethereal pads wafting over the top before a sinsitar bline takes over with some nasty edits and a souled out vocal sample to calm the nerves. An awesome way to finish off the first release of what will no doubt be a highly collectable electronic music label. DJ support from Goldie, Logistics, Kasra, Nutone, Spectrasoul, Friction and many more.

DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The first DSM release of the new decade sees them continue to push leftfield, forward thinking drum & bass. 2009 was big year for Data with releases on Revolution, Horizons, premier dubstep label Tempa aswell as the mighty Metalheadz and for his first release of 2010 he returns to DSM with two tracks that cement his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative producers in drum & bass at the moment. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscenbt of late 90’s techstep. For the AA side he teams up with newcomer Kingsin for ‘Baggage’, and it is perhaps Data at his most experimental with sharp, staccato, almost off beat drums and haunting synth lines coupled with a his trademark growling bass. Both sides show a diversity in his production and goes to prove he is not one to stick to any particular style, but rather constantly innovate and push boundaries with his music.

Finish copy. Following up their critically-acclaimed Red Letter LP, Digital and Outrage link up for Outrage’s Backlash Records with “Eclipse”, a dub-soaked number to start 2010 proper! Lead by a thumping kick, this one is a dub-lovers dream, flowing with loads of effects, echo and perfectly-timed ragga vocals. There’s a lot of space in this one, allowing the elements to breathe, and the atmospherics feel like the soundtrack to the moon overtaking the sun. On the flip, Outrage’s “K Zero 9” finally makes it way to the record bins. This one has been tearing things down in its slow-burning venom, and is the perfect lick to get the party started, or send a ready crowd into a frenzy with its hypnotic bass. While the dub-side of Drum & Bass seems to be almost forgotten, its good to know that the torchbearers are still around, injecting tough riddims for those who know. -Khal (dogsonacid.com)

Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of future-bassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! NB New Era and Zombiezz are being released as a split with our good pals Tigerbeat6, thanks guys.
PLAYS FROM: Raffertie, Starkey, Slugabed, Donna Summer, Kid606, Pirate Soundsystem, Chrissy Murderbot, The McMash Clan, Warlock, Subeena.

3024008 Titan EP – lllum Sphere 3024 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. “Titan.” Sometimes titles are just perfect, aren’t they? It’s a huge, sprawling beast that seems to inhale every mutant strain of bass music it can and exhales it in one exhilarating 4:20 blast. It opens with ominous rumbling and 8-bit bleeps (and crickets?) before ambient chords ascend out of the depths, dragging a twisting electro synth with them. That pulsating, spiraling synth slinks its way through the gossamer membranes of the track, contracting and expanding as needed, its bulbous, serrated ends emanating industrial howls like ghosts of rave sirens. Clinking percussion desperately tries to keep the track in line, but it bursts from its foundations for split seconds, causing little blips and beeps, interruptions, skitters, grasping feverishly at its surroundings; eventually the percussion splinters into fragments and things open out for a few moments, but a synthline this big can’t stay dormant for long, returning with hymnal chords in behind it, hovering, until the percussion comes back in, lockstep in with the riff as if resigned to the fact that it can never overcome something this massive. On previous releases, Illum Sphere’s fallen more into the post-Dilla FlyLo camp (what are we calling this stuff these days anyway?). His two EPs on Fat City have been impressive, but this new threetrack release on Martyn’s 3024 label sees him moving into slightly more dance-oriented waters, appropriating techno into his repertoire of subtly stomping tunes. ” “Go Killum” acts as a brief interlude, two minutes of mangled synth strewn about a deserted battlefield, canned, distorted gunshots taking the place of drums. The track takes neon brightness and submerges it in murky waters, the distorted beat only letting up for a few seconds of melodic prettiness before it stomps back in and chokes the life out of it all over again, until the blue turns to grey. It feels a little bit like a palate cleanser, a little morsel of whirling synths to clear out your tastebuds for the next psychedelic main dish. “Technopolis” is just that, its tumbling piano keys hoisted aloft on a pulsing techno beat and misty-eyed chords. He even finds time to set bass notes off like depth charges, overbalancing the track and scattering silvered notes onto the breeze. It wafts along like a classic techno track, gentle drums and glossy synths, as gentle strings pluck a nearly inaudible melody deep beneath the surface, in the sewers and slums of the technopolis, the unheard masses keeping the tune afloat. It’s an evocative track, dipping its toes into the past but never falling deep into the whirlpool of nostalgia, and even if it did, the indefatigable energy of “Titan” would pull it out right away, like a crazed dog on a leash.

Terrorythm Recordings is owned and run by Plastician, one of the grime scene’s most influential artists, it’s been very quiet on their front lately, but their back with a bang with a brand new release from Crissy Criss, hard hitting and grimey dubstep is the order of the day, suffice to say this is gunna fly out!

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. This track says more about Mensah’s production style than any of his previous releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky. Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D, Von D and more.

RWINA007 Goin Out EP – SRC Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Fresh from Birmingham comes young talent SRC delivering the ‘Goin Out EP’ for the Rwina imprint. Stuffing old school 8-bit sensibilities and new school Grime attitude into a blender and hitting puree, SRC slings sizzling synths and punchy basslines with devastating effect. From the casual g-funk of ‘Goin Out’ and ‘Sort of a Start’ to the skank-u-like shuffle of ‘Facepalm’ and the Danjah-esque ‘Where’s the Remote?’, this EP contains Grime riddims that will fill every dancefloor with hypercolors, power-ups and neon-lights, like Pacman duelling with Mario in the dark. With all this in mind, SRC makes the case that he’s one to watch for the future, and with a workrate to match the hype, you can expect a lot more where this came from! DJ support comes from the distinguished likes of Starkey, Swindle, Elijah & Skilliam, Taz Buckfaster, Baobinga, Terror Danjah and many more…

New D ‘n’ B Releases

NOMIC001 Acacia Avenue / Detroid – dBridge, Instra:mental & Skream Autonomic 12″ Vinyl
Established in early 2009 by dBridge and Instra:mental, the Autonomic Podcast series hastily captured an audience of over 50,000 listeners each month. Whilst showcasing a wealth of new and exiting music without a channel for release, they decided that the Autonomic brand should move onto bigger things and create a label and regular club night. Having secured a quarterly night at Fabric in London, and also mixing the Fabric Live 50–dBridge & Instra:mental presents Autonomic CD, the record label was the next logical step in order to create a home for the style of music that they believe has many more avenues to explore. First up for release are two collaborative tracks A) dBridge / Instra:mental / Skream ‘Acacia Avenue’ Gaining momentum week in week out on the club circuit, what at first seemed to be quite a barren track has grown into a little monster. The intro draws you in with an unexpected switch into emotive b-line stabs, but it’s the subtle drop of the heavyweight 808 sub layered with the Pro 1 and Moog arps riff that send the dance floors silly. No crash bang wallop of drums here, just a simple riff timed and executed for maximum effect. Traveling down a moodier path than the flipside, ‘Detroid’ is an Interesting fusion of influences that create something very distinctive. Taut atmospheres and whispering sound effects fabricate a background for the loosely hanging percussion groove and murmuring bass undertone. This track is riddled with trademark production styles from both dBridge and Instra:mental, put them together in the same pot and they mix smoothly into a remarkable piece of music.

ADRS001 Twilight – BMK Audio Danger Records 12″ Vinyl
Audio Danger records are proud to announce its first release. It hosts BMK’s ‘Twilight’ with a stunning remix on the flip by the king of soulful Drum and Bass, Utah Jazz. Both these tracks have had major support on BBC radio 1 and 1xtra from Fabio, Grooverider, Bailey, Nerm and D-code and more.
A. Twilight – BMK is an up and coming producer who has had releases on many other labels and is set to be a rising star for 2010. He comes to Audio Danger Records with a track that is full of summer dance floor niceness with its flowing bass line, vocals and pads. The track is reminiscent of the early liquid sound in 2003-04 with heavier beats and cut vocal samples. The combination of harder drums with the pad and vocal elements come together to bring a track that is sure to stand the test of time. Twilight is guaranteed to get any dance floor moving and is sure to be a smash throughout the Drum and Bass scene.
B. Twilight – BMK (Utah Jazz Remix) – Utah Jazz is best known for his soulful Drum and bass and with this remix he doesn’t disappoint. Using the best elements of BMK’s version, he takes them down another level and makes the track more relaxed in its nature. He combines his style with the elements of the original perfectly. This version is being championed by Bailey and Fabio and listening to it you can hear why. If you prefer your beats with soul and feeling then this is the version for you. The release also features an amazing artist who goes by the name of Tom Walker. He has created an unbelievable unique piece of artwork for the releases sleeve and this would make you want it either in your box to play or on your wall to appreciate it. The entire package is a must have for DJ’s and art lovers alike. …

RISE021 Mindless – Trei Uprising Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Stylistically inhabiting a musical landscape populated with driving jump-up drum breaks, angular melodic synthesiser patterns and driving pulse-like bass lines, as a musical entity TREi is a genuine composer and artist. APHA003 Dust Ball / The Trunk – Fracture & Neptune Astrophonica 12″ Vinyl
Fracture and Neptune are back this month with another killer release on their own Astrophonica label. They first released back in 2001 on the infamous Droppin’ Science label, which still influences and shapes their sound. In September 2009 they decided to unleash their own label, a label that is about pushing the boundaries and broadening the dimensions of D&B, so much so they already have support from fans such as Aphex Twin, Amon Tobin and DJ Food. With the re-emergence of D&B and the huge creative capacity this is the ideal time for a label with such genre-pushing potential. This is the third instalment and is a sign that the label is getting stronger and stronger with each release. “Dust Ball” and “The Trunk” have received heavy play across the DnB scene with top DJs such as Doc Scott, DBridge, Marcus Intalex, Zero T and Jubei caning both tracks. “Dust Ball” was also featured on Loxy’s CX11 podcast. Support has also come from outside the DnB scene with DJs such as Laurent Garnier loving this release. The vinyl version of this release was 100% manufactured in the UK and pressed at the legendary Ex-EMI plant ‘The Vinyl Factory’ on high quality 140grm vinyl. This plant uses old presses from the EMI golden days so who knows what other classic records have been pressed before Astrophonica? The organic textures of ‘Dust Ball’ develop over a back bone of tight, snappy beats and an ever evolving bassline while ‘The Trunk’ sees the duo fuse tough 80s drum machines with edgy science fiction atmospheres and heavy low-end to create a paranoid stepper for the floor.

Ewan Cook (iDJ Magazine – May 2010 – 8/10 Recommended) “Dust Ball shows the pair have
been hunkering down at the nu-skool trough in style, its peak/morph filterings, warpish breaks and this soup of reverbed analogue goodness doing the seriously wonky, chunky damage. Do not miss.”
Laurent Garnier (PPB / DJ Various) “Great release, I will present both on the radio”
Dave Hayze (Knowlege / Sonorous) “3rd release in a row from Astraphonica that will sit nicely next to the first 2, that haven’t left the bag yet ! Esp Hull Breach ! Will cover in ATM
Paul Jubei (Metalheadz / DJ Various) “Love the Fracture & Neptune stuff at the minute, these boys are really on a roll right now. Some serious Emu Pressure, harking back to the good old days – in the box as standard!”
BM (DJ Magazine) “This is good stuff, I’m sure one of our journalists will cover it”
Toby Howieson (Drum & Bass Arena) “Another 2 great tracks on what promises to be a very influential new label in the scene”
Simon Harrison (Basic Soul Radio / DJ Various) “To put it simply ‘Dust Ball’ is the BOMB!!”

GEN175002 Crossbreed Definition Series Part 1 – The Outside Agency / SPL / Cooh One Seven Five 12″ Vinyl
The Outside Agency’s DJ Hidden & Eye D continue to define and refine their drum & bass/hardcore crossover sound with this second release on Genosha One Seven Five: The Crossbreed Definition Series Part 1. This series will feature collaborations between The Outside Agency and some of the leading names in hardedged drum & bass. For this one they teamed up with heavyweights SPL and Cooh. Separate Ways with SPL is moody track with razor sharp drums that effortlessly moves back and forth between offbeat drum & bass and rolling hardcore while never losing its flow. The middle section of this Separate Way harkens back to the early, simpler days of hardcore when less was more. Soul Keepers with Cooh has a somewhat misleading title as it doesn’t have much in the way of soul. What it does have is unrelenting, pounding snaredrums that have taken the place of the kickdrums. You’ll have to hear it to believe it. They didn’t completely forget about the kicks, of course. Just like Separate Ways on the flip, this track features a middle section that flirts heavily with the way hardcore used to be: simple and effective. To sum it all up this is another multifunctional release on One Seven Five that should appeal to fans of hardedged drum & bass and hardcore alike. Pick up your copy now and start confusing the competition.
DJ support by: Counterstrike, The DJ Producer, Donny, The Outside Agency, SPL, Ophidian, The Panacea, Mark N, Cooh, Mindustries, Limewax and more.

SWAMP005 Footcrab – Addison Groove Swamp 81 12″ Vinyl
Addison Groove aka Headhunter has made an absolute beast here, taking hyperdelic 808/909 drum machine grooves and big bass then applying it all to dubstep. There aren’t many vaugly dubstep related DJs NOT playing this right now, its an anthem already, people even try and sing along. LAB009 The Sound – Cluekid Aquatic Lab Records 12″ Vinyl
Aquatic Lab kick of 2010 with an already established club anthem. Cluekid’s remake of Reggie Stepper’s ‘Drum Pan Sound’ strikes heavy with a ruff and rugged bassline that rolls nicely under the familiar melody & vocal hooks of the original. The drums on this one are clean, precise & ten tonne. The flip features an old school revivalist joint with the palette borrowing from Jungle. ‘Late Nights’ brings forth quality production techniques, from the crisp percussion to the warm massively padded bassline. Essential.

HENCH013 Rhythm / Pulse 80’s – Jakes / Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
The explosion of dubstep in the UK (and Bristol in particular) has dictated that the standard of production and new ideas is fiercely competed. Nevertheless, HENCH is one label that remains at the forefront of this ever-expanding scene. The 13th release from the imprint presents an outstanding 12” comprising of ‘Rhythm’ from label boss, Jakes, along with the debut release from Bristol’s rapidly rising star, Mensah. These tracks both feature on the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1 (soon to be released). The compilation is to be mixed by Jakes and will feature unreleased tracks from Papa ‘ench himself. The release will contain new exclusive tracks from Komonazmuk, Chasing Shadows, Lost and Giant, as well as providing a platform for debut releases on the label from Minus, Tek-one and Mensah.
A. JAKES – RHYTHM is the name, and you can bet your bottom dollar that this tune has it. Immediately setting the step, a background siren gives the warning for what’s about to follow. With Jakes’ vocal defining the riff of the track, get ready for a bassline that’s best described as ‘underwater funk’. This tune’s had a lot of love from all the right people, and it’s not hard to see why – with Jakes’ innovative flavour stamped all over it – Rhythm truly stands out in the crowd.
AA. MENSAH – PULSE 80’s – Flip over for the bass-led rhythm of ‘Pulse 80’s’. Building the intro with a glitchy lead-synth and punchy kick-drum, nothing detracts from the simple yet effective pulse of the beat. When the bass drops, expect the dancefloor to be bouncing up and down in time. Showcasing Mensah’s diverse influences, this is just one example of the various different styles of dubstep productions he’s producing right now. RSVER001 Detroit Falls / Orpheus – Pariah R&S Records 10″ Vinyl
Debut single for hotly tipped London based producer Pariah on the legendary R&S record label. Pariah is a precocious young talent. Part of the same London bass music scene that has spawned the likes of Burial, Bullion, James Blake, Pangaea and Untold, and part of wider loosely knit scene that includes futuristic, electronic beatsmiths such as Flying Lotus, Hudson Mohawke, Rustie, Falty DL etc. Already an in demand remixer before the release of this debut single. He has remixed current media darlings The XX (Basic Space – easy the best mix of the bunch), Brit winner Ellie Goulding (Under The Sheets), Bombay Bicycle
Club (Always Like This) and might have had a hand in a certain Erykah Badu bootleg doing the rounds. The two tracks on this debut single were the his first ever finished productions and snapped up by R&S under the noses of a whole bunch of interested high profile labels. They continue the R&S tradition of releasing forward thinking electronic music, and follow the lineage of Aphex Twin, Model 500, Patrick Pulsinger and Derrick May. The two tracks on this single wear the influences on their sleeve, referencing the hip hop beat collages of Dilla and the moody atmospheric 2 step rhythms of Burial, but still contain the rich Pariah DNA which will be even more apparent on his future R&S singles. The stuff we have heard so far has blown our socks off taking influences from sources as diverse as Levon Vincent, Fennesz and classic Detroit techno as well as the likes of MJ Cole and Steve Gurley. Already a name on the lips of the hip blog crowd (featured on Pitchfork, Gorilla Vs Bear, No Pain In Pop and Rcrd Lbl) and in demand on the European underground DJ circuit this debut 10” is likely to become a collectors item and catapult him onto much bigger things.

IDLE003 Basic Music Knowledge – Kowton Idle Hands 12″ Vinyl
“After the well received ‘Countryman’ & ‘Stasis (G-Mix)’ 12″ for Blackdown’s ‘Keysound’ imprint Kowton returns with his first release of 2010; this time for the Bristol based label ‘Idle Hands’. Set up last year from the back room of the Rooted Records, the label aims to showcase the best in raw, grooving and experimental electronic music with a particular focus on the UK underground. Having picked up lots of interest Online Kowton is ready to make his mark in 2010, following features in RA, Fact Magazine and Blackdown’s own blog. The two tracks selected for the release: ‘Basic Music Knowlege’ & ‘Hunger’ operate in the musical middle ground between the darkly swung garage of El-B and the dubstep pioneers, and the submerged techno sound of STL and New World Aquarium. DJ and radio support has so far come from Appleblim, Mary Anne Hobbs, 2562 and Kevin Gorman, amongst others.

LFTDUB001 Knock You Down (Eskmo Remix) – Spor / Apex Lifted Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Imagine combining Lifted Music with 3 of the Dubstep scenes biggest, most progressive artists. Now, throw in the fact that two of Lifted Music’s most recognised back catalogue anthems have been remixed by these said artists. Then, let your mouth water at the idea of a 12” consisting of Spor ‘Knock You Down’ (Eskmo Remix) and Apex ‘Nowhere to Run’ (Datsik & Excision Remix). Go on, we’ll let you dribble for a moment… Scheduled for full release on 31st May 2010, Lifted Music presents their debut release within the Dubstep genre, and judging by the enormous feedback, things look sharp. Featuring heavily on rotation in both scenes, including BBC Radio 1 airplay in mixes, LFTDSTEP001 has raised the level of Lifted Music’s output once again. Crossing the boundaries between the two scenes is often an eyebrow-raising moment, but having drafted in Dubstep’s finest exports, confidence is at an all-round high. Eskmo’s grudging approach to the seminal debut release from Spor on LFTD001 with ‘Knock You Down’ is a testament to progression at its finest. Around 4 years old, Eskmo has breathed life into an already exhilarating classic. Fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Aggro ‘140’ maestros Datsik & Excision go hard on ‘Nowhere To Run’, the original from Lifted Music specialist Apex on his LFTD004 ‘Wall of Sound’ EP. Transforming and growling between bars, this industrial remix was recently featured in Excisions recent BBC Radio 1 Mix.

DKX002 Blood Vein – Dark Arx Dark Arx 12″ Vinyl
The second release from the Dark Arx imprint sees the label head step up to the plate with an E.P release of his own. Released on May 3rd 2010, Blood Vein and Streak balance heavyweight swung rhythms with scorched Detroit melodics. Final track Argent & Sable strips the beats to leave a soundscape of dusted drones and bass tones. this release compresses these musical roots, blending the hypnotic structures of techno and emotive electronics with dance-primed rhythms of the UK’s shape-shifting bass scene. Sonic comparisons include Peverelist, Scuba, the technicians of the Berlin scene and the Basic Channel continuum.

ESTR001 Grown Man Biznizz – DRS Estate Recordings CD
The first time you listen to this incredible album you will know that Drs – apart from being one of the longest serving, hardest working & most highly acclaimed uk mc’s ever – is also one of the countries most singular voices and is fast becoming one of it’s finest song writers. If for some reason you’re just onto this guy, you should know that proof has been bubbling away since day dot. 15 years as a leading club mc speaks for itself, but few successfully translate this quality “into the booth”. When Del & Strats started dropping nuggets like “Skint” back in 03, people knew it was on. Then tracks like “Tryin’” from “subject to status” (fat city 2005) brought another unforgettable chorus that once again hinted at much, much more. Last year, the anthemic “sound of love” (development 2008) with Zed Bias & Jenna g illustrated another awesome side of his vocal potential. But with this piece of work DR has achieved another level. It’s all unmistakably DRS (there is no wild stylistic departure here) and it’s the single most impressive representation of “british-urban & potentially-popluar-music” out there right now! nCredible songs with true cross0ver potential (“what matters again” & “tears”) sit sweetly alongside contrasting slabs of heavy club bangers (“slow that flow”). Drs’ uniquely balanced & articulate style compliments every piece and the overall sound (with heavy workings from s.c.i) will smash any dancefloor, car stereo or sales chart. Check kouros music’s finest moment aka the sublime “tears” – a dead cert which is already getting serious props. “what matters again” hits a similar spot in that you instantly picture large groups of people, moving & singing in unison, regardless of prevailing taste or geography. True anthemic quality in an exquisitely made, coherent and honest album…..and when you weigh up everything the incredibly versatile & relevent drs delivers here – it’s an accomplishment few artists out there can hope to match.

Coming soon – Guido “Anidea” LP [Punch Drunk Records]

Posted 20 April 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks | No Comments

‘Anidea’ is the debut album from young Bristol based producer Guido, who alongside Joker and Gemmy, has trail blazed his way to the forefront of UK dance music. His two 12” releases, ‘Orchestral Lab’ and ‘Beautiful Complication’ on Peverelist’s Punch Drunk label in 2009, and recently completed remixes for Island Records and Tectonic Records, have garnered Guido extensive press coverage from specialist underground blogs to The Guardian broadsheet.

Guido

This album is the first to emerge from the trio, who have already made an indelible mark on UK underground music. Guido cut his teeth in the embryonic mid-decade Bristol Grime scene, producing instrumental’s for MCs and vocalists culminating in his ‘Unleashed’ mixtape in 2006. His production style shares the ultra vivid colour, melody and rugged texture of golden era Davinche, Skepta and Ruff Squad’s Rapid but also the playfulness and pop sensibility of Timbaland or Neptunes without losing underground edge or appeal.

The album will be preceded by a digital single, ‘Way U Make Me Feel’ featuring a vocal from Yolanda who has recently been touring with Massive Attack and who also featured on Pinch’s recent ‘Get Up’ 12” on Tectonic.

PC080CD Chiropteran (CD) – The Panacea Position Chrome CD
7 years after his last full-length album, The Panacea releases his 6th studio album entitled “CHIROPTERAN”. as always, he breaks fresh ground with complex song structures and musical variability unlike what you have heard in D’n'B so far. this ingenuity has made The Panacea one of the most praised entertainers in today’s electronic music-scene. while consciously referencing the heritage of early nineties ravemusic, a reduced, straight sound runs like a red thread through the entire album. what appears to be a well-known scheme is being reinvented both musically and technically, making “chiropteran” a musical symbiosis of dance and brain-dance.
Collaborating with artists such as donny, lethal, dean rodell and limewax only adds further colour to the album. overall this record proves to be more than just another 12″ single compilation but masterfully entertains the listener over 78 minutes. ver the 2 years working on this album The Panacea has found a musical language that transcents trends or genres, thus “Chiropteran” won’t sound dated after a few months but will, in time, prove to be a milestone in electronic music.

SUBSCD001 Back To The Machine – Current Value Subsistenz CD x 2
Subsistenz is more than proud to be releasing an album that has been anticipated by Subheadz all over this rock and hailed by many as a benchmark release within a scene that is still developing and carving out its own unique style. Current Value has been pushing dnb to its limits with his industrial marching sound, always raising the bar in production and programming. Now with his first techno influenced album we see the master of darkness take a u-turn back to his roots of deep machine-based music and applying his theories and craft to the modern sound of techno! Techno will always be about machine noises and this album personifies one machine in particular the Nord Modular G2. Current Value with his in-depth knowledge of sound design has put this beast of a synth through its paces – creating an album of unique twisted atmospheres and energies with that straight-out-of-the-box sound that Current Value masters so well. 98% of Back to the Machine is modular G2-based, injecting a new breed of techno that carries the old dancefloor philosophies with a 22nd century sound.

CRITLP04S A Wandering Journal Album Sampler – Sabre Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
As we prepare for what will undoubtedly be one of the album highlights of 2010 Critical Music let slip a mouth-watering 12” sampler to turn all eyes in the direction of one of the most respected producers in the game, Sabre. Two very different tracks that’ll leave you counting the days until his album ‘A Wandering Journal’ finally drops in late March. First up ‘Marvel’ sees Sabre opting for the now infamous kick and rim-shot sound, a movement he’s played a vital part in developing. A deft hand and in-depth studio knowledge lets the music drift deep into the subconscious with its subtle sparse but deadly bass, fx and mid-range tweaks creating an uneasy sci-fi soundscape. Perfectly executed. Flip over and Sabre teams up with the Subtitles-signed Ulterior Motive to take the vibes back to the dance floor. ‘Barefoot’ is a killer, make no mistake, with its bouncing b-line that changes up throughout and crisp percussion that’ll have the heads skanking hard. Fans of the Ed Rush & Optical’s ‘Wormhole’ era take note, this one’ll get you twisted. DJ support from Friction, Rockwell, Break, Kasra, Cyantific, Spectrasoul, Marky, Nu Tone, Logistics and more.

BRD005 Vamonos / High Technology – DaVIP & Encode Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. From the outside, it would appear that Breed 12 Inches has a unique bond with The Motherland, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Reaching our 5th release, 3 of which have already featured Russian artists, Breed 12 Inches is proud to introduce DaVIP & Encode onto the mainstage. Like their Russian counterparts who have also seen a release on Breed 12 Inches, this Russian duo hold nothing back, offering a huge 12” that has been literally cained by every DJ in the scene, from Audio to John B. One 12” of two superbly varying tracks, the collaboration of two of Russia’s rising artists backs Breed’s mission of developing and showcasing the best rising talent around. The A-side ‘Vamanos’, is that tune that you will have all heard over the last few months. Receiving welcomed and much appreciated support from the scene’s biggest, ‘Vamano’s has been jokingly dubbed “the most rewound tune of 2010”. Raw, electric and uncomprising – Russia in all of its glory. The B-side ‘High Technology’, is something a little different. A melodic, seemingly therapeutic melody, blended intricately with a stomping drum track, provides the foundations for a dancefloor orientated track – perfectly complimenting its counterpart on the A-side. SUBSLP001 Back To The Machine – Current Value Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl x 5
Finish copy. With over 15 tracks to be released for this album writing about what all have going for them would read like the early manual from an Akai sampler. KSHEEP009 Empty Streets Revisited / Times Like These VIP – DJ Hidden Killing Sheep Records 12″ Vinyl
DJ Hidden once more returns to Killing Sheep Records, this time with two remixes of his most well known tracks. Empty Streets Revisited is a classic fusion of dark / furious Drum & Bass and cold Industrial Hardcore, heavy 909 kicks meld with huge snares and the World’s must ridiculous bass line. Times Like These VIP, the original was in constant repress from 2006; this reworking of the track has been played out often at major events such as Thunderdome (The Netherlands epic Hardcore event) by the likes of Promo and The DJ Producer. It is the definitive DJ Hidden track and perhaps the most well known fusion of Drum & Bass and Industrial Hardcore. It is extremely hard to find an original pressing of KSHEEPV004 Times Like These, so make sure to get this VIP before they are sold out.

MEDICD003 DEEP MEDi Releases Vol.2 – Various Artists Deep Medi Musik CD
Following closely in the footsteps of DEEP MEDi Releases Vol. 1’, DEEP MEDi are delighted to announce the release of their second instalment in this retrospective series. Volume 2 picks up where Volume 1 finished at the tale end of 2007 and delivers Quest and Silkie’s first releases on the label alongside fellow Antisocial entertainment member Kromestar, DEEP MEDi regular and Japan’s finest Goth-Trad, new boy Tunnidge and label owner and scene leader Mala (Digital Mystikz/DMZ).
Beginning with a nod to the underlying roots of the label’s foundations with two super-deep meditational cuts from Kromestar, Volume 2 tracks the early beginnings of Silkie and Quest’s now infamous smooth, bumpin’ gangster boogie vibes before Tunnidge takes us back to some pure sub frequencies and Goth-Trad delivers his trademark drum programming and unrivalled intensity. Mala rounds things up and once again reminds us of the heavy influence that sound system culture has on his and indeed the label’s ethos. It’s another essential document of dubstep’s history as DEEP MEDi Musik continues its perpetual march forward.

CON027 The Electrician – Mrk1 Contagious Music 12″ Vinyl
Smothered in trademark atmospheric stealth and slither, Move Your Soul has MRK1 making fanfares for imperial squadrons, and intercepting vintage female dance vocals in a hostage situation as he darts in and out of another of his chrome mazes. Remember when Peter Griffin from Family Guy is granted the wish of having his own theme music wherever he goes? MRK1 can conceivably pop round the newsagents to the sound of ominous intergalactic friction. Taken from the forthcoming potential lip-smacker Sound of Contagious album out soon, it stands in the gap between dubstep and electronica at its surliest, moving to an easy-to-follow path so that the mass of the situation becomes hard to take on the chin. In other words, it may move freely, but it still casts a serious shadow.
Another album preview is The Electrician, which takes the rewiring of plugs to industrially draconian lengths. Synths are programmed to kick you both in the guts and your fillings as MRK1 walks the plank of spinning blades with a crystal finish, operated by a blackhearted Speak n Spell. Dubstep’s jackhammer blur of beats are dodged for a firm putting down of his foot while making the traditional aspect of dub stand out. It’s the sound of an extreme version of LaserQuest: complete with pinging crossfire across the bass wastelands, the power-packs are taking the weight of a real ready-to-go arsenal.Written by: Matty http://www.datatransmission.co.uk/ViewReview/1460/

RWINA006 Humanoid EP – Eprom Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. We want to do quality, interesting, electronic music here at Rwina. We’re not trying to bring you some stuff aimed solely at fitting into ‘the scene’ – no, we like beats, bass, synths, stuff that can mess with your head as well as move your feet. So, bearing that in mind, we’re proud to present Eprom, fresh out of San Francisco. ‘Humanoid’ takes stepping beats in a Mala-gone-ATL vibe, and marries them to lazer-guided pitch-switching neon synth lines that contract and expand, breathing their way through the track and re-programming the dance floor into a blur of hypercolour. The classic vocal sample reminds us how far we’ve come from the days of Acid House, yet how much remains the same – people still want to hear amazing noises put together in a way that makes them dance. ‘The Slaughter’ takes the mid-tempo West-Coast sound and runs with it – glowing synth lines harmonise like the work of acid-loving robots over swaggering beats and moody, almost RZA-esque atmospherics, building intensity throughout the track.
Finally, ‘Lick Out’ sounds like the kind of music Drexciya might have made if their underwater civilisation was based around the Bay Area’s hyphy scene. The whole track is dripping wet, an exploration into a future world of aquatic crunk that defies categorisation.
Rwina is proud, but not surprised, to note that this release is being supported by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Jakes, Starkey, The Gaslamp Killer and Slugabed.

b2 Eprom – Lick Out

HJP49 Wireless – T++ Honest Jons Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
Since its 2005 debut, Torsten Profrock’s T++ project has grown in stature and scope to the point where it’s admired by fans of techno, dubstep, d’n'b and experimental electronics alike, and annexed by none. Anchored in the kind of scuffed, sub‐heavy atmospherics Profrock developed in his 90s recordings for Chain Reaction, and naturally influenced by his work with Robert Henke as Monolake, the sound of T++ is singular, always evolving, difficult to fix. But now we come to the end. Wireless will be the last work the Berliner produces under that name. Appropriately enough, it’s arguably his most expressive, energetic and fully‐realised offering to date, affirming the enduring fundamentals of the T++ aesthetic even as it steers it into uncharted climes. Long ago snagged by the rhythmic innovations of the post‐jungle underground, on Wireless Profrock makes explicit his debt to the radical fringe of UK garage. Snapping 2‐ step rhythms are at the heart of all four tracks; for all the distress, deconstruction and detournement they undergo at his hands, the spirit and swing of the British soundsystem tradition is there, irreducibly, in their DNA. Further, Wireless is a kind of remix, shot through with the contorted samples of voice and ndingidi on a handful of old East African 78s (from a forthcoming Honest Jon’s compilation). The result: a record that sounds at once ancient and modern, possessing a unique tonal language and with it a curious, almost occult power.

b T++ – Anyi
c T++ – Voices No Bodies
d T++ – Dig

HDB033 Idiot / Idiot (Altered Natives Remix) – Ikonika HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Due for release one week after Ikonika’s debut CD ‘Love, Contact, Want, Have’, ‘Idiot’ is the first in a series of picture sleeve 12”s taken from the album backed with remixes from some of Hyperdub’s favourite current producers. ‘Idiot’ is already something of a hit with those who’ve heard it being played out, combining hard soca drums with lush ecstatic melodic synth harmonies and a driving bass with a strange 8-bit melody that stumbles and trips around the rhythm. It’s completely alien at first, but potent enough to stick in your ears until you might catch yourself humming the refrain when you least expect it. A unique and fantastic combination of compelling contemporary sounds. Altered Natives, aka North London producer Danny Native, whose track ‘Rass Out’ was one of 2009’s best, takes over the B-side with a remix that seems to reflect 20 years of British house music back on itself. Just using the bleeps from the original tune, he echoes and morphs his own melody over stepping dubby kicks and snares and a dark, driving bassline.

These guys have been smashing it lately, with more than one forthcoming releases on both Dubsaw & Screw Loose Records, aswell as releases on labels such as Trill Bass’s ‘Trill Bass Records’ it’s almost obvious these guys are gonna soon be smashing up the scene with their deep, dark and chopped up dancefloor killers.

NL005 Lets Talk / Vicodin – Instra:mental Naked Lunch 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy. ‘Let’s Talk’ is a slow burning, ocean deep house tune that capitalizes on the warm punch of the constant kick drum. Driven on by echoed melody snatches, pulsing synthesizer stabs and a husk entombed voice that waxes lyrical about forthcoming plans its unsettling mood is, somewhat surprisingly, it’s optimum strength. ‘Vicodin’ turns the tempo up to a more recognizable dubstep pace but manages to sound totally unique and overtly fresh thanks to its use of intricate percussion and beatless structure.
Its a subliminal smash weaved around pounding sub-basses and Detroit-esque piano chords. Support from : Martyn ,2562 , Scuba , Vexd, Instra:mental , D-bridge ,Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir , TRG ,, Headhunter , Nubian Minds , T++ , Mary Ann Hobbs ,Stingray313 , Dj Flight ,Mark Pritchard, Ramadanman, Surgeon and many many more.

PROPH119 The Riddim EP – MJ Cole Prolific Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. I could go one for at least two or three paragraphs about how “classic”, “brilliant”, and, “timeless” MJ Cole’s 2001 Mercury Prize nominated ‘Sincere’ is, but there are plenty of writers out their that have already covered that portion of his career. I’ll save you the cliché bullsh*t and get to the meat of his latest release, Riddim EP, on his own label, Prolific Records: It’s GOOD, damn it! Simply put, the Riddim EP is a great big bowl of skippy beats, big ol’ driving basslines and catchy “riddims.” My favorite track is the Volcano Riddim’s with its building strings, huge bassbin stomping bassline and plethora of bleeps. Second favorite track is the Thekla Riddim that starts of with a washy build with robot samples and a glitchy rhythm line. http://f4music.com/?tag=mj-cole

CTFAT100 Jookie – Foamo Fat! Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Fat! Records are back! This, my friends, is jolly spiffing news – especially when they return with something as resoundingly large and summer-specific as this UK funky-tinged number from Foamo. Carnivalesque mischief abounds as horns and infectious Afrobeats weasel their way through the mix of whistles and bass on ‘Centavo’ while ‘Jookie’ takes things even further south of Soa Paulo with an epic horn fest doesn’t dissimlar to Unitedeyes’s ‘Sambana’ if you can remember that far back. To say welcome back would be an understatement. Idj mag review 10/10 and top tune feature! Rob Da Bank played Foamo ‘Jookie’ Saturday on Radio 1. Mistajam drops “Centavo” on BBC 1Xtra 17.03.10

GIRL001 Four Floors (Diplo Remix) – Sunday Girl Unknown 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Sitting somewhere between Goldfrapp and Lykke Li, Sunday Girl aka 21 year old South London songwriter Jade Williams is an utterly unique talent. Mixing cutting edge electronics with the streetwise romanticism of her lyrics to create a crisp future electro pop template, then combining it with an effortless sense of style, Sunday Girl is an artist simply fizzing with a heady mix of far flung pop possibilities. ‘Four Floors’ is a bright and breezy slice of musical sunshine, with a groove cheekily nodding towards drum & bass while still sharing pop DNA with the likes of St Etienne and The Cardigans. Electro magpie Diplo and London wonk hop remixers Sketch Iz Dead are on remix duties, taking an already killer song out into the middle of the dancefloor and transform it into woozy space crunk. Finally Russ Chimes completes the 12” with his dancefloor mix. He recently remixed Ellie Goulding, Marina & The Diamonds.

Coming soon – Alaska “The Mesozoic Era” LP [Arctic Music]

Posted 15 April 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 3 Comments

Dev Pandya is a certified breakbeat pioneer with a production career spanning 20 years. Having first released back in 1990, he’s since amassed a back catalogue of over 130 singles on leading drum and bass labels including 4 Hero’s Reinforced, LTJ Bukem’s Good Looking, London Elektricity’s Hospital and Goldie’s Metalheadz. He nowadays runs his own imprints as the primary outlet for his tracks, with Paradox Music, Arctic Music, Esoteric and Outsider each having a unique identity and focus.

Producing alone under the names Paradox and Alaska, he also collaborates regularly with the likes of Seba and Nucleus, as well as vocalists including Kirsty Hawkshaw and Robert Manos. His appetite for touring remains as strong as ever and he continues to astound and entertain crowds with his live shows, mixing banter, commentary and chat with breakbeats for a one-off PA.

The musical career of Dev Pandya dates back to 1990 when ‘Mixrace’ was formed with partner DJ Trax. From their first releases on leading hardcore label Moving Shadow, the pair went on to set-up and record for their own labels before Dev’s two alter-ego guise’s emerged in 1996.
Exploding across the scene with a string of 12″ releases on Renegade Hardware, Certificate 18 and Reinforced Records, Alaska/Paradox soon became a name synonymous with abstract atmospherics and intricate breaks. His Alaska alias appeared at the same time yet focused on more ambient productions, releasing on labels such as Good Looking, Renegade, Vibez, 720 Degrees and Nexus.

Pioneering a style that channels the 70’s funk of breakbeats, Alaska has always focused on the raw elements of drum and bass within his music. Appealing to an audience beyond the confines of a club environment, his production credits include work for ESPN, Konami Arcade platforms and Sony Playstation games in the Usa and Japan.

Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Alaska’s success has never been limited to that of the UK- orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated under the Paradox name with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell.

His new album The Mesozic Era which is to be released on May 24th 2010, is the third in a trilogy of solo Alaska lp’s and a follow up to 2006’s successful Arctic Foundations. The stunning packaging boasts Triple Snow-White Vinyl and a Solid-Black Compact Disc, something that hasn’t been manufactured before in drum and bass.

As a bonus, the CD includes more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Alaska’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired.

When he’s not in the studio, Alaska is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide (having only just returned from Alaska shows in Australia). Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 180 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound.

It’s been 4 years since the Arctic Foundations album and a decade has passed by for the fans of the Virtual Virtuosos LP so It’s about time Alaska delivered the third chapter to complete the ambient-jungle trilogy. May 24th 2010 see’s the release of Alaska’s brand new album The Mesozoic Era.

Alaska has been living in sub-zero temperatures whilst programming the album, and the frostbite’s reflected in every avenue of the LP.

The album features pure ambient-jungle, Sample Me drum patterns for producers to sample, downtempo drum and bass and the debut ambient collaboration of Alaska & Robert Manos plus famous trance siren Kirsty Hawkshaw returns for two numbers on the LP.

Arctic Music has raised the bar to deliver unique formats for analogue and digital lovers alike, with stunning and beautiful Triple Snow-White Vinyl and Solid-Black Compact Disc packages.

Coming Soon – The Panacea “Chiropteran” LP

Mathis Mootz, the teutonic mastermind and producer behind The Panacea from Wuerzburg, Germany, has developed and perfected his sinister drum & Bass mashup style over the years. The Panacea is digital Napalm Death, he samples and throws together elements of hardcore techno, drum’n'bass, jungle and industrial creating a truly powerful, explosive sound.

As one of the dominant faces of the iconic german record label Position Chrome he has released 25 ep’s and 5 albums since 1996. His debut ‘Low Profile Darkness’ was one of his most influential works to date and a huge
success with over 12.000 copies sold. It received diverse support from a variety of genre’s such as metal, industrial, goth and punk. it was truly ground zero, a monolith for heavy music to come. Others followed like the
techno & hardcore influenced ‘Twisted Designz’, ‘Phoenix Metabolism’ with it’s hip hop & booty-bass roots, the enormous ‘German Engineering’ & ‘Underground Superstardom’, as well as the experimental & noisy
‘Architettura’.

His experimental, electro, and neo-industrial beats were produced under the aliases of Squaremeter, Disorder, Warfare, Kate Mosh, Bad Street Boy, Radar, Rich Kid and Warfare. These productions were released on labels like Mille Plateaux, Ant-Zen, Hands Productions, Caipirinha, Ambush, Ad Noiseam, Kniteforce, Intransigent, Outbreak, Offkey and Freak Recordings.

With the much anticipated 6th full length album on the way, he continues to bring his otherworldy dimensions while on a busy tour schedule. It is evident that The Panacea has found a musical language that transcends trends and genres.

With their first release on Boka (Hear Dis Style / Underworld) in 2006, The Others were quickly signed by Dub Police, arguably the world’s leading Dubstep label, in a move that has seen them become the most released artists on the label’s roster and considered true ambassadors of the eclectic Dub Police sound.

Having spanned the globe with their unique and varied DJ sets, taking in tours of Australia & New Zealand as well as countless dates all over the UK and Europe, clocking up releases on leading labels such the legendary Tempa and N-Type’s Wheel & Deal Records along the way, The Others continue to move forward with ever increasing strides With no sign of slowing down, these Dubstep stalwarts stand out as true creative trailblazers.

The Others
Gravity EP

A) Gravity

Starting off with a dreamy-like theme intro that takes you into a sick anthem that will make you want to raise your hands high, on any dance floor. Just as you are convinced that you are back in the 90ʼs raving in a dirty warehouse. D-code and Dexterous will smashes you right back into 2010 as their signature bass drops in and rolls you around on the floor like a little puppy. Gravity has already gained lots of support from DJs like…Caspa, Skream, N Type, & Mista Jam from BBC 1xtra. After you hear this track – you will dream about hearing it again. Future classic…Gravity!

B) Puppetwalk

This track starts with a rather minimalist “Twilight Zone” intro. It then drops into a heavy monster of a tune soon enough. With a baseline that sounds like it was infected by something that “didn’t kill it, but only made it stronger” It literally sounds sick! I really needn’t say too much about this one except; sparse and heavy as FCUK. Personal favorites. Love it.

C) Karma

A sparse upbeat intro shows its first glimpse of soul through a delayed chord stab that immediately throws your mind into a deeper state. The phrase “eyes down” comes to mind as this tune drops in to a really soothing and beautiful deep roller that seems to be tailor-made for your mind to drift away. At the same time it has both breaks and stabs that keep things moving. Although The Others may be more widely known for their tougher tunes to some, this is a clear reminder that they really are amongst the top producers on the deeper side of dubstep as well.

D) Dot 2 Dot

With a very suspicious thriller intro, Dot 2 Dot clearly states that you are heading for some sort of trouble. Since itʼs The Others, itʼs easy to believe it has something to do with a filthy bass line right from their bass laboratory. Mad scientists D-Code and Dexterous realized that their creation was alive, much like Frankensteinʼs monster. Only this monster is a giant, dizzy, vinyl robot that has one goal – to get you. Yea …get you good. You should definitely try this one out on the biggest and best sound system available to you.
