Coming soon – Subway Recordings Presents “Destination” Series

Posted 30 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Subway Recordings has been a steady force within the dubstep scene the last 3 years. Not only as a label but also as one of the most forward thinking party crews on the Dutch scene. Some of the leading names have passed through Subway first before becoming the new rockstars of today….

By flexing its sides from deep to hardcore they have been showing how far the word dubstep bends into multiple angles, after releasing quality tunes like “Missed Calls”, “Unknown Suspect” and especially last year’s hotly tipped “Seeeeriousss” its certain that this label knows quality when they hear it.

This Destination Compilation has the word quality written all over it, ranging from Mutant Funky Dubstep to Garage combined with some of the girttiest and darkest sounds Dubstep has to offer. Subway once again shows what Dubstep is about. Not clinging to styles of focusing on sub genres, this compilation is all about Dubstep in every sense of the word.

Play support for these tracks comes from the likes of Noah D, The Others, Emalkay, Broken note, Youngsta, N-Type, Babylon System, Antiserum, Seven, Matt-U, Audio, Marlow, Hatcha, Skream, Benga, Flux Pavillion, Trolley Snatcha, Doctor P, Giant, Distinction, Joker, Komonazmuk, 16bit and more….

Coming soon – Funtcase & Southbound Hangers Ft. Raff “Dubsteppa” [NCOMP002]

Coming soon – Funtcase & Southbound Hangers Ft. Raff “Dubsteppa” [NCOMP002]

Posted 29 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Only it’s second release in and Marlow’s No Comply Recordings brings you a sure-fire dance-floor anthem. Kids are chanting along to the lyrics in clubs all over the globe – ‘Dubsteppa, Hot like Pepper’. -Yeah it’s that one!
On the flip, the biggest Trance tune of 2009 gets the Marlow remix. ‘Aztec’ by The Neptune project was Armin Van Buuren’s top pick of last year, and Marlow has transformed it into a Dubstep beast.

Just as before, the vinyl format is strictly limited, hand-numbered, and hand-stamped. But this time it also comes with a free poster. So get in quick to avoid disappointment.

A. FUNTCASE & SOUTHBOUND HANGERS FT. RAFF – DUBSTEPPA

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

After the success of ‘So Vexʼd’ on Circus Recordings earlier in the year, Funtcase teamed up with Brighton duo ‘Southbound Hangers’ to create the almighty ‘Wizard Sleeve’. With the help of MC Raff, the south-coast boys now take it one step even further – Dubsteppa. Due to its infectious lyrics, this track is easily one of the most recognisable and memorable tracks in DJ sets right now.

Southbound Hangers, Funtcase & Raff

Brutal half-step beats cut through razor edged mid-range synth-bass madness. A clever and subtle mixture of precise fills and edits sit in perfect contrast against the in-your-face yet simple bass riff. Nothing more need be said about the lyrics – you all know them, you’ve all heard them. And Raff only confirms this track as an essential purchase.

B. THE NEPTUNE PROJECT – AZTEC (MARLOW REMIX)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Described by The Others as ‘the master of intros’, Marlow creates tension and suspense in a schizo blend of an enchanting intro vs the most gnarly and disturbing Marlow creation to date. Twisting and turning, the bass line slowly matures into bit-crusher mayhem. Percussion fills and clever cuts placed between evolving bass fluctuations keep this remix captivating throughout.

DJ support from: Rusko, Caspa, Chase n Status, 16bit, Crissy Cris, Jakes, Mistajam, Excision, Datsik, Stenchman, Trolley Snatcha, Doctor P, Flux Pavilion.

New D&B CD

VTGCD001 Vintage – Utah Jazz Vintage Recordings CD
Two years since his mesmerising debut LP ‘It’s a Jazz Thing’ transported d&b dancefloors across the world back to the halcyon days of early-noughties liquid-funk bliss, the unabashed ambassador of vintage d&b is back doing exactly that: vintage d&b. The template is the same – lavish melodies, spring-fresh beats and unfathomably orginal soul samples – but this history lesson just grew some meaty balls: ‘NRG ’93’ channels the spirit of old-skool hardcore; ‘Skyward Bound’ threads classic Amen clatter and heavy low-end through sublime ’70s guitar loops; and the wrinkle-tastic Ragga Twins jet in to holler magificently over rollicking experimental stepper ‘Enter The Jungle’. Experimental steppers? Utah Jazz? Believe it – true to form, the renowned party-rocking DJ is quite happy bucking all preconceptions as well as ignoring musical trends, and the results are his best work yet.i DJ album review 9/10.

RDRCD001 Jungle Fever Vol. 1 – Murdock presents Radar Records CD
After more than 10 years in the scene and playing alongside all the greats, it was time for some natural progression. DJ Murdock launched his first official mix cd to critical and popular success in October ’09 and set the standard for what Radar Records will deliver in the future. Having worked closely with Netsky, who’s climbing the ranks of drum&bass like few have before him, it was an obvious choice to have two of his tracks for the first release on Radar. ‘Your Way’ is one of the most popular drum&bass tunes in Youtube history, with over 170000 views, and ‘Daydreaming’ is a taster for one of the next Radar releases, as a new version is promising to go global soon. ‘Daydreaming’ has already been played by London Electricity, Grooverider and Fabio. Both tracks were featured exclusively on Murdock’s ‘Jungle Fever Vol 1′ mix cd and are now available to all on 12″ vinyl and mp3 download. SUICIDE051 Damn Tough / Vibrations – Mindscape Commercial Suicide 12″ Vinyl
Evil funk of highest grade. Mindscape are dropping some serious vibes this year. Damn Tough is a exactly that! With its trademark Mindscape deep bassline and growling building the pressure with each bar. Vibrations is a trancey, chilling track almost liquid but heavy on the funk. Gergely Sasvári aka Mindscape, is one of the major producers hailing from the thriving Hungarian drum and bass scene, homeland of producers like Chris.SU, SKC, or Jade. He achieved his first success as a member of the electronic band ’Random Soundz’, performing live at several major events. In 2003 he founded the Mindscape trio, that a couple of years later became his solo project. 2010 looks even brighter for Mindscape, Collaboration EP on Subtitles, and also looking at a single 12” at the classic Virus Recordings. While working on his 2nd album, he has also found time for other projects, such as collabs with Gridlok, Chris.SU and Jade. Beyond doubt, by 2010 he become an unavoidable force in the international drum and bass scene.

SUBTLE013 Tensions – Sub Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Subtle Audio makes it’s return to the vinyl fold with this brand new 3 tracker by Austria’s Sub. Living at high altitude in his native land, it comes as no surprise that these tracks exude an icy sound. “Tensions” is a beautifully delicate piece of D&B. Sharp snares, hi-hats and drifting atmospheres are underpinned by a sub-zero bass sound. Suddenly the beats thicken and become twisted and glitchy. It’s almost as if a frozen lake you were standing on is beginning to crack and give way! “Halleluja” is on the half-speed tip and will not even sound like D&B to most. Choir voices are interrupted by a stepping beat and a shuddering, dirty bassline, offset by a world of icey atmospherics, echoes and feedback. This sound is truly from another planet. “Hydra” is something a little different for Subtle Audio – clocking in at 120bpm but it certainly doesn’t sound like house or techno! It’s a nicely mellow track with a lurching, jerky beat that is filtered and reversed but always rhythmical. Dark Rhodes keys and then a bright piano line ensure a nice variance of mood in this beautifully balanced piece.

b2 Sub – Hydra

With so many heads at the helm its certain that this stuff is going to get interesting “Grotesque” is a gargantuan track that flows so smoothly. Keeping the sounds to a minimum, yet with maximum devastating effect on the dancefloor. Feel the future funk take control with this one and play it loud! Then for the B side we have “Dick Chainey”. Like its host this one is slimey… nasty… and it will lie in your face.. Just when you think you know this one it switches up the game in true Dick Chainey fashion confusing everybody in sight.. HUMA8030 Hardcore Will Never Die / Systems Activated – Zardonic Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Zardonic join’s forces with Counterstrike & Mumblz. Zardonic’s brand of Drum & Bass has four main elements: the Melodic element (as there’s nothing I hate the most than these stupid dark tracks that have no melody on them and it’s all about noise and no key notes), the Latin element (coming from Venezuela, savage grooves just have to be there), the Industrial element (yup, I like noise, with melody, but always a reason behind my tracks sounding so overcrowded), and obviously the Metal element, since I’m stuck using minor thirds, fourths, fifths, diminished fifths, or ninths, and a lot of amp simulators to add that organic tone in my reeces and leads. That pretty much sums it up. Melody. Latin. Industrial. Metal.

TRNSL006 Denile / A Chain Of Red – Grimm & Nusense / Resound Translation Records 12″ Vinyl
Translation Recordings is proud to unveil the first pairing of tunes from debut LP/compilation “Without Borders.” Rinsed by DJs to include Grooverider, Anile, Sinistarr, and Stunna, “Denile” is a collaboration between Canada-based artists Grimm & Nusense. The duo deliver a stripped-back and cavernous steppa, with deep low-end rumble, acid squelches, and reverberated dubstyle chords. The flip welcomes the return of Translation veteran and Finnish dnb all-star Resound in the futuristic sounds of “A Chain of Red,” where floating synth pads weave through a crunchy, 8-bit tone sequence. Spliced drum edits at the drop quickly change the uplifting opening vibe into a more sinister and moody one that is charged by an electrified synth bass wall. Meanwhile, a combination of congas, snares, and hi-hats punch in and out of the mix to give this monster of a tune its staccato percussive core. These dancefloororiented tracks represent only a small sliver of the spectrum and vibe covered by the “Without Borders” LP/compilation, which will be available in the coming weeks on CD & digital download featuring exclusives from Solar Empire, ASC, Mindmapper, DBR (UK), Marginal, Dub Phizix, Edward Oberon, Stranjah, Theory, Slider, and Expose. Keep it locked!

DSM016 Glass Of Greed – June Miller & Anile Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
Two of the most talked about producers of recent times, June Miller & Anile, join forces to devastating effect for DSM016, and together they have crafted the darkest release to grace Deep Soul Music so far. This is the first of many tunes from these two as they have developed a close working relationship with their complimentary sounds and styles and they will be gracing DSM with plenty more of their music in the future.
Whilst many have tried to jump on the ‘minimal’ bandwagon and to imitate others styles, ‘Glass of Greed’ is the perfect demonstration of how stripped back, half-step d&b should be done. A pounding kick drum, a deep snarling bass line and sinister vocal snippet all combine to create an aggressive, moody atmosphere similar to that of old Renegade Hardware tracks but with a new twist for 2010. This has been causing carnage on dancefloors the world over, and if Satan himself listened to drum & bass, he would listen to this….
‘Induction’ sees Anile go it alone, and the man himself has even said this is one of his personal favourites of the tracks he has produced. Stripped back to very fundamentals of the genre, you can hear elements of his trademark half-step sound but with the rolling drums and big bass, this is one of Anile’s more dancefloor orientated efforts and judging by the reaction from dj’s and ravers alike, he has got the formula just right.

LFTDUB001 Knock You Down (Eskmo Remix) – Spor / Apex Lifted Music 12″ Vinyl
Imagine combining Lifted Music with 3 of the Dubstep scenes biggest, most progressive artists. Now, throw in the fact that two of Lifted Music’s most recognised back catalogue anthems have been remixed by these said artists. Then, let your mouth water at the idea of a 12” consisting of Spor ‘Knock You Down’ (Eskmo Remix) and Apex ‘Nowhere to Run’ (Datsik & Excision Remix). Go on, we’ll let you dribble for a moment… Scheduled for full release on 31st May 2010, Lifted Music presents their debut release within the Dubstep genre, and judging by the enormous feedback, things look sharp. Featuring heavily on rotation in both scenes, including BBC Radio 1 airplay in mixes, LFTDSTEP001 has raised the level of Lifted Music’s output once again. Crossing the boundaries between the two scenes is often an eyebrow-raising moment, but having drafted in Dubstep’s finest exports, confidence is at an allround high. Eskmo’s grudging approach to the seminal debut release from Spor on LFTD001 with ‘Knock You Down’ is a testament to progression at its finest. Around 4 years old, Eskmo has breathed life into an already exhilarating classic. Fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Aggro ‘140’ maestros Datsik & Excision go hard on ‘Nowhere To Run’, the original from Lifted Music specialist Apex on his LFTD004 ‘Wall of Sound’ EP. Transforming and growling between bars, this industrial remix was recently featured in Excisions recent BBC Radio 1 Mix.

PTN002 More Than Ever EP – Hackman PTN 12″ Vinyl
Briskly traveling from Swansea to Leeds, PTN follows Doc Daneeka’s release with an equally hyped EP of fresh material from Hackman, who along with Doc D, featured in FACT Magazine’s top 10 producers to watch for the year. Hackman is one of the exploding Funky movement’s best and brightest producers, rising fast and unleashing unstoppable rhythm after unstoppable rhythm. Profiled by the venerable and influential Blackdown in 2009 Hackman is no stranger to hype even so early in his career. But it’s not all just hype, and if anything, the hyperbole is warranted. Hackman makes music in line with other prominent Funky producers, but his productions have a certain sheen and a peculiarly humid quality that make them unmistakable. His impressive grasp of bass (see the absolutely crushing basslines in “Bodies” and “Surround” off of his EP for Well Rounded, betrays his initial foray into dubstep, and it lends his music a power both more nuanced and more visceral than many of his contemporaries.

MEDI027 Tenopause / Discreet Dub – Calibre Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Calibre flexes his dubstep muscles, here making his second outing on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint – the first was a subtle rolling garage-like affair that had all the hallmarks of Calibre’s drum & bass sound as well as Deep Medi’s deepness. The highlight here has to be ‘Tenopause,’ where Calibre’s knack for subtle rolling percussive bliss is in full effect. The hi-hats draw you in with their fluid forward motion and when they play off the kicks and that addictive bass line pulses with hypnotic energy before flailing off into open space like it’s ricocheted off a passing space cruiser, you’re deep into eyes down zoned out, head nod, arm shake territory. ‘Discreet Dub’ is a more spaced out affair, slowing things down to a half step and upping the atmosphere as the bass seduces you into a state of bliss as it shifts amongst the eerie Middle Eastern melodies. Words: James Balf http://sonicrouter.blogspot.com

BOKA028 Flex’d (Ikonika Remix) / Detroit Skank – DJ Madd Boka Records 12″ Vinyl
It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a postgarage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music.
DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM and more recently by Gilles Peterson on Radio 1. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.

CTFAT101 Too Many Times – Randomer Fat! Records 12″ Vinyl
The newly re-launched Fat! Records continue from where they left off with this forward thinking release from Randomer & Fife. Too Many Times sees Rhodes stabs and a super-slick vocal cut ride a bassline that, coupled with the high-energy percussion, builds to a deceptively furious peak before releasing a soaring synth-line that will no doubt strike a chord with fans of Sbtrkt and Joy Orbison. Slum City is an altogether tougher affair with its heavyweight percussion and bass bin punishing drop, yet it once again defies pigeonholing with its blissed-out breaks and vocoder. Futuristic banger!
Support from: Gilles Peterson – BBC Radio 1 – Mary Anne Hobbs – BBC Radio 1,Mistajam – BBC 1Xtra, Ras Kwame – BBC Radio 1 (Record Of The Week), Marco Del Horno – Rinse FM, Starkey – Sub FM, A-Trak – Ben UFO -Untold – Martelo Scratcha DVA – Greenmoney – Braiden – XXXY -Spam Chop – Warrior One – Mele – Tomb Crew – DJ Donna Summer – D Malice.

ATM002 Spectrum Falls / Giga – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated second full length ‘Midnight Colour’ on Planet Mu in June, Ital Tek drops two multicoloured cuts for the second single on his own Atom River label. The A side ‘Spectrum Falls’ is a cascade of arpeggios, steel drumlike melodies and cutting saw-tooth bass. The track is already featuring in DJ sets from the likes of Surgeon and Starkey and is set to appear on the Fabric53 album. ‘Giga’ on the flip is a long time staple and favourite of Ital Tek’s DJ sets. A tough, swung 2-step beat, underpinned with bouncing sub bass and washes of reverberated fuzzed out chords and dub stacks. The first taste of what will be a very busy year for this producer.

FC12035 Producer No.2 Remixes – dBridge Fat City 12″ Vinyl
From our Producer No.2 album we’ve selected dbridge’s slo-mo d’n’b production “ZX81” for two very special treatments. The remixes are from Shed & Ramadanman. Berlin’s Shed is a consumate producer & engineer of techno reknowned for his explorations into dub on labels like Ostgut, Hardwax & his own Soloaction. Here he works dbridges track into a stunning, brooding monster of a track driven by a gloriously filthy sub-bass and alleviated with an uplifting skeewed synth breakdown. The remix brings together elements of techno, dubstep, & d ‘n’ b in formiddable fashion. …An absolute killer! On the flip Ramadanman drops a typically accomplished piece, fusing styles to dramatic effect. After recent heavyweight releases on Hemlock & Aus he once again comes correct working a heavy block percussive rhythm wrapped around sublime bass drops and intensified by motorised keys for a true heads-down effect. Both tracks have been favoured and played by Martyn, Scuba, Peverlist, James Blake, Actress & Instra:mental. Not forgetting that we’ve had the vinyl mastered and cut at Dubplates and Mastering, so you know the spirit is in the groove.

HJRLP052   New Wave Dance Music From South Africa – Shangaan Electro    Honest Jons Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
An astounding compilation of the breakneck Shangaan dance output of the Nozinja studio in Soweto, recorded between 2006 and 2009. The traditional Shangaan music is fast. You play it slow, they won’t dance. music. Shangaan is fast. While others play at 110, we are at 180, 182, 183. And when you hear those marimba beats and that live guitar through the keyboard, you know it’s Shangaan. You hear those toms, then you know, this is Shangaan music. “You must be prepared to see the fastest dance ever,” Dog declares. The dances are wild, with films of them attracting more than half a million hits on You Tube. The tradition grows out of the Shangaan disco movement, a music that dominated in the ’80s with artists like Penny Penny and Peter Teanet. Shangaan disco ran at 110 BPM. Dog’s music is around 180 and it’s getting faster. Yet the lyrics seem to run counter to this rapidity. They read like African soap operas, tied up with domestic matters and a yearning for the slower life. This is country music. There’s something distinctive in this Shangaan perspective: they are one of the more rural and traditional groups in the wealthiest African nation, yet ‘tradition’ to them can also be living, electronic and nuanced. Just as Dog samples American phrases in his songs, his videos cut in shots of white joggers on a spring day, a foggy lakeshore somewhere like Wisconsin, even a corporate office space —mundane yet exotic images which become intriguing takes on the modern South African dream. Instead of African music becoming Americanized and re‐framed for the global market, Dog’s productions do the opposite. American phrases and foreign images become samples in his collage, in his traditional context. This album is the first release of its kind outside South Africa. Here is Dog’s music as‐is.

MTR005 Borderline / Crackdown – Sinister Souls Mindtrick Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Second release for the young Dutch act Sinister Souls, following a debut on Excision’s Rottun. These two ‘Borderline’ tracks are of the slow-moving, heavy and scraping dubstep kind, and somewhat shows well how the whole dark d’n'b sensibilities can translate into this genre. As with Broken Note, Matta, The Eerier Child or a good part of the Rottun people, gone are most dub elements, replaced by grating distortion and dark undertones. It’s all pretty bassy and massive in here, and should work perfectly with headnodders.

CMPD007 Get Loose – Landslide Remix / Fracture & Qualifide 170bpm Remix – Compound One Compound Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Compound One started as a concept while they were at the pioneering Dubstep club night FWD. Fracture had been checking out the emerging Dubstep sound and Qualifide was then hosting a weekly show on Rinse FM and had begun to mix dubstep in with his usual garage style. The timing was right, the studio session was booked…’Get Loose’ was unleashed!
LANDSLIDE REMIX: What can be said about this remix? It’s next level! Landslide has done what only he can do and has managed to completely change the vibe of the track by taking it down a more bouncy, jazzy, garage route but at the same time keeping the low end and vibe of Get Loose in tact. Layers upon layers of Landslide’s trademark chords & sound FX, intricate programming & solid drums cause this classic remix send shivers down your spine!
FRACTURE & QUALIFIDE 170bpm REMIX: Compound One revert to their original aliases and totally flip the script with a back to the roots deep Drum and Bass remix as a salute to their heritage. With the boundries between D&B and Dubstep slowly blurring they thought it would be the perfect time to write their first D&B collaberation since 1996! It features all the rudeness of the original but ups the tempo to give the track a new pace and feeling.

New D&B Releases

AMLP01 The Mesozoic Era (Triple Snow White Vinyl) – Alaska Arctic Music 12″ Vinyl x 3
Limited edition (Triple Snow White Vinyl). Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Alaska’s success has never been limited to that of the UK- orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated under the Paradox name with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell. His new album The Mesozic Era which is to be released on May 24th 2010, is the third in a trilogy of solo Alaska lp’s and a follow up to 2006’s successful Arctic Foundations. The stunning packaging boasts Triple Snow-White Vinyl and a Solid-Black Compact Disc, something that hasn’t been manufactured before in drum and bass. As a bonus, the CD includes more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Alaska’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired. When he’s not in the studio, Alaska is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide (having only just returned from Alaska shows in Australia). Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 180 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound. It’s been 4 years since the Arctic Foundations album and a decade has passed by for the fans of the Virtual Virtuosos LP so It’s about time Alaska delivered the third chapter to complete the ambient-jungle trilogy. Alaska has been living in sub-zero temperatures whilst programming the album, and the frostbite’s reflected in every avenue of the LP. The album features pure ambient-jungle, Sample Me drum patterns for producers to sample, downtempo drum and bass and the debut ambient collaboration of Alaska & Robert Manos plus famous trance siren Kirsty Hawkshaw returns for two numbers on the LP. Arctic Music has raised the bar to deliver unique formats for analogue and digital lovers alike, with stunning and beautiful Triple Snow-White Vinyl and Solid-Black Compact Disc packages. Both 12” vinyl and compact disc versions offer material exclusive to each format, and all solid-black disc versions feature extended mix’s taking the album a step further.

RECIPE007 Transfer / Block 305 – Skeptical Ingredients Records 12″ Vinyl
(EACH COPY COMES WITH A FREE RECIPE CARD FROM THE ARTIST)
After the success of Phobia’s giant 12’ on Ingredients (and killer Beef stew) the next instalment comes from an up & coming artist making waves in 2010. Ashley ‘Skeptical’ takes a step towards the deep, dubby vibes of underground Drum & Bass, harking back to oldskool Metalheadz with “Transfer” a bassline roller. Flip for ‘Block 305’ for some half-time mechanical minimalism, with it’s barrage of bass pinning you against the wall. With production like this you know this guy has plenty more to come, and this is the first of 3 12”s signed to the label. You’ve been warned! Skeptical comes correct with his steak dish!

REDSEAL005 Judgement Day EP – Calibre Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl x 2
Black Vinyl edition. In a coup of epic proportions, New Zealand imprint Samurai Red Seal has managed to obtain 4 exclusive tracks from the prolific musical genius that is Ireland’s Dominick Martin aka Calibre. In 2009 the third release on Red Seal was a 12” single from Calibre – ‘Ringtone’/’Jackoff’ (REDSEAL003) which was a massive success with DJs from around the globe. There was only one thing we could think of to follow that up, and that was twice the amount of music. As Calibre’s legions of followers will attest the man has endless styles and the ‘Judgement Day’ EP attempts to capture a different approach with each tune. The title tune ‘Judgement Day’ features the sultry but potent vocals of Samurai Music’s favourite MC/Vocalist DRS, on what can best be described as a stone groove. The vibe gets jagged on the awkward funk of ‘Trust’, a tune that seemingly wriggles it’s rhythm at you! ‘Don’t Want Your Love’ is a tour de force of soulful Drum and Bass, with every element combining into a soaring, rolling groove. Described by fans as possibly Calibre’s most powerfully emotive tune to date, we advise staying away from this tune during hangovers or relationship break ups. And finally, a proud dancefloor steam-train with a buzz saw reese, ‘Jungle One’ has been floating around in the sets of a chosen few for some time now and finally sees a full release. DJ support on this release has been unanimous, with the likes of Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, LTJ Bukem, dBridge, DJ Friction, Doc Scott, London Elekricity, Spectrasoul, Cyantific, Nu Tone, Commix, Logistics, Lenzman, Jubei and many more!

NZ012 Be Strong / Point Pleasant – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Returning sharply to the dancefloor, Nottinghams Soul Intent graces Samurai Music with another 2 potent riddims. ‘Be Strong’ issues a very timely bit of advice in the vocal department while jagged breaks funk their way into a bass drop that Dillinja would be proud of. The defining feature of the tune however comes midway thru the main section with a rollicking bongo section. This tune seems to have an immortal life on the dancefloor with ‘classic’ written all over it. ‘Point Pleasant’ once again opens with Mr Judd’s unique reworking of a classic break before dropping into a deep bassline groove that seems to forge classic Full Cycle with some of Reinforced’s mid 90′s flava’s. Featured on the recent ‘Drum and Bass’ Anthems Mix Cd compiled by Hospital Records.. Big DJ support on these 2 from Klute, Doc Scott, State Of Mind, Eveson, Crissy Criss, Kool FM, Mistajam & Radio 1′s Huw Stephens.

NONPLUS007 Ochre / Cascade Failure – Vaccine Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus 007 sees the Californian based producer Vaccine make her debut on the label with a brace of tracks in her signature style of rich musical textures and ingenious drum arrangements. With a wealth of releases on labels such as Hotflush and Tempa, its safe to say that quality control has never been an issue for her and this release is no exception.
a) Vaccine ‘Ochre’ – The a-side ‘Ochre’ with its scratchy lo-fi beats and rugged gliding bassline is textbook Vaccine. An abstract looping vocal brings an almost soulful edge to the track but it still remains tense and gritty throughout. Doing damage in clubs across the world but just as relevant at home, this track will stay in your playlist for the long haul.
aa) Vaccine ‘Cascade failure’ – Slightly mellower than the a-side but on more of an emotive tip, this track plays with orchestral “Burialesque” chords and melodies and really makes you get your thinking cap on. Once again her trademark lo-fi beats and percussion swirl around in seemingly effortless complex patterns, with layer upon layer of chords and melodies the track has so much depth its almost impossible to take it all in with just one listen.

Finish copy. Ulterior Motive take you back to the future with ‘2098’, recalling pre- millennial tension with sci-fi atmospherics, genetically modified breaks and a bionic bassline straight out of the golden era of drum & bass. What the DJ’s are saying:
Ed Rush “Gonna be playing 2098 for an age, doing serious damage worldwide. More tunes like this please!”
dBridge “I wondered how long it would be for someone to come along and re-ignite the flame left to fade by others”
SP:MC “Optical left the gate open and these boys are coming right on through”

LAB010 Burglar – Truth Aquatic Lab Records 12″ Vinyl
Wetting the appetite for the forthcoming ‘Puppets’ album, Aquatic Lab dish up two varied future bass experiments from Truth. First up ‘Burglar’ a tech-stepping original production bedded with sharp snapping drums & snares that bite straight through the rave atmospherics. Bass wise this piece of kit is extreme to say the least, signature bulbous sub action. ‘Dead Silence’ comes from a charged half step angle with complex percussion. The track features a glossy synth line. At it’s core it evolves to unleash deadly licks of bass at opportune moments. Both cuts are a prime pick for the steppers. Getting huge support from Mala, Skream, N-type, Hatcha and Joe Nice.

SENSELESS012 Zombiezz EP – Kanji Kinetic Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of futurebassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! NB New Era and Zombiezz are being released as a split with our good pals Tigerbeat6, thanks guys.
PLAYS FROM: Raffertie, Starkey, Slugabed, Donna Summer, Kid606, Pirate Soundsystem, Chrissy Murderbot, The McMash Clan, Warlock, Subeena.

FRJ006 Angels Dub EP – Kuoyàh Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl
Italy’s Marco Donnarumma indicated some of the potential of his Kuoyàh project with last April’s digital release for Frijsfo, earning enthusiastic tips from the likes of Boomkat. Nonetheless, there’s no doubt that his debut on wax ups the game – even in the face of a mix from Sully – by applying a focus capable of working magic in 2010′s open-ended dubstep dance. It’s an overused comparison that probably deserves to be buried, but Angel Dub does reek of Horsepower Productions, or more precisely the ducking 2-step and Basic Channel steals of Benny Ill’s classic Tempa EP with Hatcha. In this case laziness has been avoided, a sunstroked, hazy quality making it sound Kuoyàh’s own, and a judicious electronica dimension expanding the arrangement without falling into the IDM-ish trap of trying to ape something cleverer. That holds true even for the more downtempo Asia, which turns up the dub channel to find hordes of space-echo revenants chasing around. The thoroughly dust-less grooves of common soundsystem samples are absent, though, dropped for an unexpected reversioning of Artificial Intelligence bleep tones. On Soldiers, Donnarumma’s background in electroacoustic music and ambient is more obvious, in common with Chase The Comedown, 2009′s digital EP. It’s equally clear how he’s been sharpening this kind of line since then, refining trademark, half-dismantled bundles of beats to the point where everything is in just the right wrong place. Attention for this EP will understandably bend towards Sully’s Angels Dub remix, not without justification. It’s another great Jack Stevens beat, with pummelling sub-bass, arpeggios scrambled almost in the style of Zomby and an uncharacteristically martial drum track beating out something like an Addison Groove juke pattern. Kuoyàh himself, though, deserves just as much of your time on this one, trust us.

a2 Kuoyàh – Asia
b1 Kuoyàh – Soldiers
b2 Kuoyàh – Angels Dub (Sully Remix)

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. This track says more about Mensah’s production style than any of his previous releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky. Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D, Von D and more.

PL009 Interpretazioni EP – The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision round up some of some of dubstep’s heaviest and dirtiest mercenaries for the latest Paradise Lost offering of 4 remixes on the Interpretazioni EP. Roguestar starts things off with what can only be considered an epic remix of an already epic track, Devil’s Kiss. Full throttle from the start and straddling the line between dubstep and breakstep, this track will appeal to anyone needing to destroy the floor at 3AM. Lonewolf goes dirt for his remix of The Messenger, bringing the heat with his notorious filthy style, incorporating heavy synths with nasty breaks. On the flip, Djunya takes things to the dark side of dub, with his re-take on the bizzarely spacey Elephant Walk. Currently a favorite of DJs pushing the deeper sounds, Djunya brings in heavy reverbs, 8-bit stabs, and his trademark bassline business to produce a brilliant and complex sound. Vesicle round off the release with what might be their heaviest production yet on the remix of The Rose. Junglist vibes and bass terrorism combine to produce devastating material showing off the impressive skills of these up-and-comers from Finland. With something for everyone on this release, Paradise Lost is going from strength to strength.

PIPS012 Untitled / Digest – Joe Apple Pips 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe. With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre. The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it! The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…
DJ/Radio support coming from Mary Anne Hobbs (BBC Radio 1), Modeselektor, Peverelist, Rob Da Bank (Radio 1/Bestival), Paul Woolford, Ramadanman, Brackles, Appleblim & many more.

The man of the minute Doctor P steps up with a serious club banger in the shape of ‘Badman Sound’, which has gained huge support from the likes of Caspa, N-Type, Skream, The Others & many more of the scenes big hitters. Squelching bass, tonk beats and a serious catchy lead that you will be singing for days after; all combined to make this one massive track! The flip side doesn’t take any prisoners either, but this time it’s the turn of the man who spends way too much time hanging around outside supermarkets; Trolley Snatcha. Featured on the Scion A/V & Dub Police CD, ‘Slow Down’ will already be well known by a lot of you eager dubhunters out there with it’s relentless basslines, stomping beats and cheeky Middle Eastern melodies. All in all this is a single you can’t afford to pass on – an essential slab of plastic from Dub Police once again

DVA005 New World Order – DVA DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
The latest releases from a Producer famous for his persistent abuse of 4×4 convention, Scratcha DVA presents the New World Order EP on his own DVA Music imprint. Showcasing 4 tracks from a range of Producers the EP opens with a pair of brand new Scratcha DVA productions. The title tracks bomb shelter rave dynamics combine spiraling synths, warm organ stabs and heaving bass tones to apocalyptic effect while its companion ‘Schizophrenic’ lives up to its name, alternating a floor filling 8 bit 2 tone skank with churning Grime synths at their most sour. The flipside offers up Roska ally Uncle Bakongo’s brutally stripped down take on Soule Power’s= ‘Lost’, pairing industrial strength drums with decaying vocal snippets and brooding keys before a last minute change of pace resolves the vocal tension. S.Chu’s rounds out the EP with a reworking of his ‘Quickfoot’, fully equipped with a slow burn bass line and shimmering synth arpeggios. Please no sharing. Feel free to get in touch for more info.

SENSELESS013 Zarbak – Pacheko & Pocz Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The phrase ‘tropical’ is currently getting used to describe a lot of different music; some good, some bad, some ugly. To save on confusion Senseless went out and travelled the world to find some music from the actual tropics, Venezuela to be precise. Somewhere buried deep in the mysterious rainforest, or possibly just in a studio in Caracas, they found Pocz and Pacheko. It’s so near the equator maybe we can ditch the ‘tropical bass’ tag and go for something new, ‘equatorial bass’ perhaps? Maybe not. Pacheko, Francisco Mejia, will be familiar to some for his solo releases on Lo Dubs, Murder Channel, Seclusiasis and for his work with legendary Venezualan expat Cardopusher. His partner in bass Pocz (Carlos Majoral) is a classically trained musician and production engineer. Along with a select few others they run Abstractor, a collective of producers, artists and designers, who promote parties, run a blog and do a fine job of representing bass music in Venezuela pretty much solo. The collective includes graphic artist Design or Die who is responsible for the incredible artwork and pretty special video for ‘Zarbak’. Together by day Pocz and Pacheko run a sound design studio in the rum fuelled pressure cooker of political and social unrest that is Caracas. Their training in high-end audio engineering is evident in the quality and weight of the production. Nights are spent in the tropical heat cooking up beats. Over the years an audio diet that includes salsa, merengue, reggaeton and other local music mixed with old jungle tapes, Rinse FM sets and lots of dub has helped them to build a unique and captivating sound that combines all those things.
The spirit of hardcore, jungle and garage from the UK are all evident from the UK Funky rhythms and rumbling sub bass in ‘Zarbak’ to the melancholy melodic refrains of ‘Dorado’ but there’s something else there too. There’s something tribal in the drums that taps into a deep history of Latin American percussive rhythms and adds a dimension that is clearly their own. If UK bass is about the energy and pressure of the city at night then Caracas bass about the point where the intensity of the city meets the wide open space of the jungle, the beach and the mountains under a carpet of stars. Put the needle on the record, close your eyes and imagine it. Also, there’s remixes from Brackles (Blunted Robots/Planet Mu) and Mr Gasparov (Soul Jazz).

aa1 Pacheko & Pocz – Zarbak (Brackles Remix)
aa2 Pacheko & Pocz – Dorado

RED039 Defsteppah EP – Deformer Redrum Recordz 12″ Vinyl
Deformer hailing from Rotterdam city, The Netherlands, is a strong player amongst the progressive electronic music scene for years already and are about to release a new 3 track e.p. entitled ‘Defsteppah’. Where Deformer normally sets the tone with innovative Jungle or quality Breakcore, they now give new direction to the Dubstep genre in their own onorthodox way. The Defsteppah E.P.
Kicks off with the title track and a roots Reggae atmosphere soon turns into a vicious bass driven stepper with angry, yet conscious lyrics of Mike Redman and Scapu Lox on top. The second track ‘Damien Dub’ already found it’s way to the underground club audience and is becoming a party favorite. A twisted rave line holds together a complicated drum pattern while a foundation of solid bass slowly mangles your hearing bone. ‘Extreme Deformity’, the third track on this e.p. is a quite original track which fuses the typical Rotterdam Hardcore sound with deep Dubstep. From the one into another in just a matter of minutes. Not for softies… The Defsteppah e.p. is a limited edition release and has an incredible lasered picture pattern on the B side of the disc. It will not be repressed.

a1 Deformer – Defsteppah
a2 Deformer – Damien Dub
a3 Deformer – Etreme Deformity
b – a special lasered picture disc

Coming soon – Zinc “Crackhouse Vol.2″ 12″ Sampler

Posted 16 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Hailing from london’s east end, Zinc first became involved in the dance music world via pirate radio, which led to the meeting of like minded DJs and producers at the birth of jungle – an exhilarating clash of breakbeats, basslines and samples that defined a generation of UK clubbing.

He went on to produce some of the scene’s biggest anthems, most notably ‘Super Sharp Shooter’ and the remix of the Fugees’ ‘Ready Or Not’ – both of which still devastate dancefloors to this day.

In 1996, Zinc launched the True Playaz label alongside jungle veterans Pascal and DJ Hype and continued to produce and release many jungle and drum & bass anthems on True Playaz, throughout the end of the 90s, making the label one of the biggest and most successful of the era.

DJ Zinc

In 2000 Zinc produced the genre defying ‘138 trek’ – which went on to chart in the UK and single handedly created a whole new genre, establishing him outside of his native dnb. During this time he also released music under the moniker ‘Jammin’ and once again found the way into the hearts of ravers and record bags of DJs, way outside of his perceived home – drum and bass.

In 2001 Zinc launched ‘Bingo Beats’ his own imprint, releasing breakbeat and drum & bass from artists including Shy FX, Chase & Status and D.Kay.

In 2005 Zinc was a featured lecturer in the Red Bull Music Academy, he has continued to work closely with the academy and the lecture where Zinc talks candidly about drum & bass, pirate radio and music’s evolving business models can be viewed here.

Testament to his remarkable achievements in British dance music, 2008 saw Zinc included in the ‘British Music Experience’ alongside the Beatles and Sex Pistols. The permanent exhibition in London’s 02 Arena, chronologically documents the major contributors to contempory British music.

With the dawn of 2009 Zinc called an end to his hiatus on the dancefloor and began producing and DJing again, only this time producing and playing ‘house’, in the loosest sense of the term. With his blatant disregard of genre blueprints (see 138 trek, ‘Faster’ et al) you can never be exactly sure what’s coming next.

Therein lies half the charm, the other comes in his ability to continuously devastate dancefloors the world over.

As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. The original jungle dons push all the right buttons here as they team up with Riya for a sumptuous vocal excursion like no other. ‘Redlines’ has already been given the thumbs up by the likes of Mistajam and Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1/1xtra and it’s not hard to see why. DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
The first DSM release of the new decade sees them continue to push leftfield, forward thinking drum & bass. 2009 was big year for Data with releases on Revolution, Horizons, premier dubstep label Tempa aswell as the mighty Metalheadz and for his first release of 2010 he returns to DSM with two tracks that cement his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative producers in drum & bass at the moment. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscent of late 90’s techstep. For the AA side he teams up with newcomer Kingsin for ‘Baggage’, and it is perhaps Data at his most experimental with sharp, staccato, almost off beat drums and haunting synth lines coupled with a his trademark growling bass. Both sides show a diversity in his production and goes to prove he is not one to stick to any particular style, but rather constantly innovate and push boundaries with his music.

BLR003R K Zero 9 / Eclipse – Outrage / Outrage & Digital Backlash Records 12″ Vinyl
Following up their critic ally-acclaimed Red Letter LP, Digital and Outrage link up for Outrage’s Backlash Records with “Eclipse”, a dub-soaked number to start 2010 proper! Lead by a thumping kick, this one is a dub-lovers dream, flowing with loads of effects, echo and perfectly timed ragga vocals. There’s a lot of space in this one, allowing the elements to breathe, and the atmospherics feel like the soundtrack to the moon overtaking the sun. On the flip, Outrage’s “K Zero 9” finally makes it way to the record bins. This one has been tearing things down in its slow-burning venom, and is the perfect lick to get the party started, or send a ready crowd into a frenzy with its hypnotic bass. While the dub-side of Drum & Bass seems to be almost forgotten, its good to know that the torchbearers are still around, injecting tough riddims for those who know. -Khal (dogsonacid.com)

MODULE002 The Cleaner / Raindance – Hybris Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Modulations is the proud younger sibling of Critical music launched in 2010. The label got a head start with Lenzman and now brings yet more vacuum-packed freshness, this time from new boy Hybris. An awesome second release for the fledgling imprint that’s got people talking throughout the scene. The schedule for Modulations will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. First up is ‘The Cleaner’ with sharp drums and that dangerous subliminal, almost toxic bassline. Serving as the perfect accompaniment to ‘Raindance’ with its thunder cloud atmospherics, it has the electricity, the thickness in the air and delivers the quiet before the stormy drops. The single is a perfecect combination, even meteorologically, and should make any drum and bass connoisseur fidget with anticipation for more from Hybris. ‘Raindance’ is a hauntingly beautiful take on what we would expect from darkside of drum and bass. The tribal vocals and broken beat percussion make it a tune to be remembered with subtle but sick bass and a fantastic spatial awareness. It shows how less can be so much more with a classy production prowess that many drum and bass veterans still strive for. So hold tight and be prepared to be carried away in the hypnotic magic of ‘Raindance’.

If you take a trip back to Influenza Media 007, you might remember the fantastic uptempo vibes of Blue Motion’s ‘Only Words VIP.’ Influenza Minus 001 revisits this glorious track, bringing forth the original mix and a remix by Triad, the collaboration of Basti (which is also a collaboration between Madmen and Poets from Phunkfiction) and Henree. The trio has music out on Deep Soul Music, Horizons Music, Critical, X-tinction and Engine Music, and one of their most recent releases Omar featuring Estelle – Lay It Down (Triad Remix) has just been released on Peppermint Jam. In Blue Motion’s original mix, progressive, steppy vibes roll this one in before the melodic hook takes over. Very minimal in nature with a warm bassline, samples and piano lines build endlessly and seamlessly before making way for Triad’s teched out sound. A moody bassline sets the atmosphere with arpeggios of angelic voices, leading into a moment of silence before the drop. Fans of Critical Recordings, Subtitles and Quarantine would love this one.

NXG006 Superbad / Morning Light – Intelligent Manners / CJ Styles NexGen 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. NexGen Music touches down with its latest lick of soulful, sophisticated Drum & Bass featuring one of Russian Federation’s hottest DJ’s & Producers – Intelligent Manners and new artist CJ Styles from the original home of drum & bass – England, U.K. Following on the back of the label’s last release from Kyro & D.A., NexGen return with two absolutely heavy dance-floor killers ‘Superbad’ & ‘Morning Light’. NexGen Music releases always deliver sublime production and musical quality and this latest release is no exception. NexGen always prefers not to ‘name drop’ supporting DJ’s, as they believe in letting the music doing the talking. Truss….. There aren’t many liquid / soulful vibes spinning DJ’s that don’t have this one in the box!
A. INTELLIGENT MANNERS – ‘SUPERBAD’ – 2010 Russia meets 1970’s American rare groove-funk-soul = PURE JAZZED UP DRUM-FUNK! This tune features a tantalizing build up laced with heavy rolling drums and clever slabs of funk coming at you from all directions. The tune then drops into crazed funk mayhem with sharp, crisp drums and a deep sub bass that would churn any hardcore worm-eating stomach. This is the proper rinse-out and the ultimate ‘Drum-Funk’ tune for the summer. A must have…
AA. CJ STYLES – ‘MORNING LIGHT’ – Just as the title of the track suggests – you are greeted with warm, quiet but somewhat eerie tones exactly what you may expect to hear on a spring / summer morning but don’t be fooled! Hard crisp drums gently enter the build up with nasty bass stabs floating in and out of the mix followed by a heavy drop with multiple bass-lines and aggravated synths. While the bass is deep the gentle tones effortlessly weave in and out of the track creating a very well executed musical composition. This is a top maiden release from CJ Styles of whom we will be seeing more quality releases in the near future. Watch out for future NexGen releases featuring Qumulus, Earth Leakage Trip, D.A, Clart & mSdoS, Eastcolors, Kyro, Matt Doubt, Kubatko, plus many others.

HDB034 Hylo / Suzuran (LV & Quarta 330 Remix) – LV & Quarta 330 / Dong HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Two collaborative tracks from Quarta 330 and LV, made when the pair met the day after Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary party in November last year. These tunes exemplify the kind of meeting of minds where the best of both producers comes to the surface, as Quarta 330’s 8-bit abstraction and melodic sense contrasts nicely with LV’s characteristic lush figures and shuffling rhythms. ‘Hylo’ finds 8-bit melodies made from rebuilt Gameboys and sonar-like bleeps weaved into the crunchy snap of a reverse drum beat and warm chords, breaking down into a sonorous motif before stepping up the pace once more. It’s an energetic mix of brittle and lush sounds. On the AA side, ‘Suzuran’ is a joint remix of Quarta 330’s own remix of Japanese chiptunes artists Dong. LV places the slurring space pop of the Japanese vocoder vocal melody inside a remix constructed from syncopated drums and offkey bleeping patterns. The results are catchy and alien, as melodic sweetness is juxstaposed with the tension of the setting.

RAMP034 Fast Motion – Becoming Real Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Becoming Real is a young producer residing in a forgotten suburbia, busy channeling his very own postapocalyptic vision of London. A spectre-like entity flitting between a range of electronic frequencies, his self-termed ‘Ghost-Step’ sound is as much influenced by a conceptual future dystopia as by luminaries Zomby &Mount Eerie. Re-imagining the iciest of grime synths through a warped K Records aesthetic, Becoming Real has forged a frozen universe that still retains an unequivocally human feel. Charged with future-dread, this is music for seas drowned in oil, tar-coated forest landscapes, and a prophesised world of underwater clubs and haunted dancefloors. After a sold out debut white label release last year, Becoming Real is ready to emerge in 2010 with the release of ‘Fast Motion’ / ‘Jen’s Clock’, backed with a Scratcha DVA remix of Fast Motion.

PIPS011 Dance Too / Dance Too (Lee Jones Remix) – Komonazmuk Apple Pips 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Komonazmuk drops a tough slice of deep, stepping, and melodic dubstep for our 11th release… With his history in rave culture stretching back to the oldskool days, through releases on Hardleaders & Moving Shadow with Ice Minus, right up to his current cutting edge productions, Keiran Lomax aka Komonazmuk has got his fingers in many musical pies. Having had big releases on scene-leaders like Tempa, and his debut album coming on H.E.N.C.H. later this year, his versatility as a producer and engineer is second to none. Teaming up with Appleblim for remix work has resulted in stunning reworks of artists as varied as Bonobo, Brendon Moeller, and Harmonia & Brian Eno, for labels such as Ninja Tune, Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, & Will Saul’s Aus Music. In fact after Komonazmuk & Appleblim remixed Lee Jones & Nick Hoppner’s My My project for Aus Music, Lee Jones returned the musical favour with this stunning deeper than deep house rework of Dance Too… With a residency at Fabric, and regularly playing all over the world, 2010 is looking great for Komonazmuk! A producer that can flex to any side if he wants to and for his Subway debut he concocted 2 heavyweight dancefloor monsters that will leave the crowd begging for more. “Recovery” strikes like a ton of bricks. HRMN012 On The Low – Randy Barracuda Harmonia 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After a decade of bitter tears and hopeless trying our Finnish funkster Randy Barracuda has finally reached his ultimate goal as an artist. He has managed to combine successfully the music of his two favourite composers: Klaus Schulze and Lil’ Jon. ‘Impossible’, You may say. Well, don’t believe the hype. Take a listen to Streisand Effect’s booming crunk beats, heavy basses, epic synthesizer leads and cristallic arpeggios and choose for yourself. Dubstep – hero Tes La Rok’s outstanding remix stays true to the original but adds some extra dubby aesthetics to Randy’s storming soccer stadium skweee vibes. Backside of the record is dominated by more moody and naturalistic atmospheres. Tako To Ama (The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife) is Randy’s homage to the grandiose tradition of Japanese tentacle erotica. In its Asiatic moods and sharp synthesizer stabs You can almost feel the slippery tentacles of an octopus wandering around in your bodily cavities! Record comes to an end with Lebensraum, an eight minute long meditative disco reggae. On Lebensraum the listener finds a totally new aspect of Randy Barracuda’s aural art: gone are the rapid staccato melodies and usual stiff funkiness. Maybe Credit00, a mysterious East-German bongo player, gave the track its naturalistic charm and the comfy aura of a forest in the springtime.

DPCD001 “My Style” 23 Upfront Dubstep tracks mixed by Caspa CD + BONUS DVD – Caspa Dub Police Records CD
Caspa’s success was no fluke though, in fact you’d be hard pressed to find a harder-working person in the industry, having built up his ever-growing empire from scratch. In 2010 he is a man in demand, off the back of his debut artist album last year “Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening!” he has remixed the likes of Deadmau5, Depeche Mode, Mike Snow and most recently U.S superstar Ludacris. He’s helped bring through acts such as Emalkay, The Others, D1 and Subscape through his labels Dub Police and Subsoldiers and via his regular sell-out label roster club shows, most notably the pre-mentioned Fabric residency. His DJ schedule is still out of control with an average of 15-20 shows per month, booked up 6-months in advance and this summer the shows are only getting bigger. In June he’ll make his debut at Sonar festival… On the main stage… In between Dizzee Rascal and The Chemical Brothers – things have changed for the boy from Chiswick. And on to “My Style!”, the brand new mix series from Dub Police that once again plans to break the mould of what a dubstep mix can be with a number of acts already being lined up for future editions. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves; this is No.1 and who better to take the controls than the label head honcho Caspa. In the mix he takes us through the full spectrum of dubstep sound with dance floor slayers from the likes of Skream, Emalkay and Doctor P through to the more eclectic sounds of Joy Orbison, D1 and Joker. Of course there’s an untold amount of exclusives to boot, giving fans an early preview of some of the biggest records set to blow up in the summer months, with brand new material from the Dub Police / Subsoldiers camp.
From the 23 tracks selected we see Caspa couple upfront and unheard material with some of the scene’s biggest anthems of the last year with Emalkay’s “When I Look At You’, Joy Orbison’s now classic ‘Hyph Mngo’ and Caspa’s massive remix of Deadmau5 “I Remember” all featuring throughout the mix. Seamlessly blended, Caspa nails it with a 100% live, 1-take exceptional DJ mix using (as ever) only dub plates, a mixer and a set of 1210’s.
The mix will also come with a bonus DVD, featuring exclusive content from Caspa and all the Dub Police crew. The DVD is Exempt for classification: Educational Music Documentary.

Coming soon – Quest “Smooth Skin / Wind Tunnel” [DEEP MEDi Musik]

Posted 10 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 2 Comments

Quest is one of Dubstep’s forerunners signed to DEEP MEDi Musik and one of Antisocial Entertainment originals alongside Silkie, Heny G, Kromestar, Harry Craze, Jay 5 and Mizz Beats. Quest is never one to shout and make a fuss, always quiet and thoughtful but whilst all around are loosing their heads in the madness Quest has directed all his energy in to his production and is always far more at ease at letting his music do the talking.

Quest

Quest’s 4th release on DEEP MEDi ‘Smooth Skin’ showcases his progression, diversity and forward thinking as a producer. With it’s lush and dreamy opening chords, thumping bass kick, layered percussion and hypnotic vibes, you would be forgiven in forgetting about the B-line until it’s speaker shifting impact almost halfway through the track! Quest showing with ‘Smooth Skin’ that he takes as much inspiration from Detroit legends such as Moodymann and Theo Parrish as he does from label owner Mala (DMZ) and his very own Antisocial Entertainment Crew. ‘Wind Tunnel’ however on the flip sees Quest bouncing back to his Gangsta Boogie vibes for which he is so well known. Heavyweight, frenetic breakneck percussion, insane wall of bass, hard soulful and jazzy influences taking you on a mystical journey into outer space!
