Returning sharply to the dancefloor, Nottinghams Soul Intent graces Samurai Music with another 2 potent riddims. ‘Be Strong’ issues a very timely bit of advice in the vocal department while jagged breaks funk their way into a bass drop that Dillinja would be proud of. The defining feature of the tune however comes midway thru the main section with a rollicking bongo section. This tune seems to have an immortal life on the dancefloor with ‘classic’ written all over it. ‘Point Pleasant’ once again opens with Mr Judd’s unique reworking of a classic break before dropping into a deep bassline groove that seems to forge classic Full Cycle with some of Reinforced’s mid 90′s flava’s. HUMA8029 Planet Human / Flux – SPKTRM Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Over the past several years, Raphael Johnson AKA SPKTRM has become widely acknowledged as one of the most upcoming producers in the American drum & bass scene. Following his debut release in 2006, he was picked up by some of the scene’s heaviest hitters; including Dieselboy’s Human Imprint Recordings, Evol Intent Recordings, Barcode Recordings and Gein’s imprint Habit Recordings among others; and a strong set of releases (both forthcoming and current) were signed immediately. Always evolving, SPKTRM’s sound has undoubtedly gone through quite the transformation. Today, his productions range from hard hitting, dancefloor steppers to dark, sinister broken beat chaos; and lately his fascination with the fusion of deeper drum & bass vibes with elements of traditional funk and jazz. The only thing that surpasses his production style in diversity is his live shows. SPKTRM has been known to incorporate everything from the harshest of breaks and sub sonic basslines to the smooth, airy sounds of soul infused liquid drum & bass into his sets. During the summer of 2009, he took part in the first wave of the heavy metal inspired concept tour, Monsters of Jungle; alongside such artists as Dieselboy, The Upbeats, Demo, Ewun, Infiltrata, Mayhem and Evol Intent (The crew is expected to reunite in 2010 to complete a full length North American tour). Most recently, SPKTRM has linked up with Los Angeles based producer Gridlok, and is working on tunes for his infamous Project 51 Recordings. He also has additional releases lined up for the new year, as well as remixes and collaborations with the likes of Gein, Demo, Joanna Syze and Dieselboy to name a few. Through constant and tireless work, SPKTRM is rapidly making a well established name for himself; and is an act not to be missed.

Those of you who’ve been around for a while will remember D.Kay & Rawfulls Illkillz alias. Their early tunes married cheeky trance riffs with grimy drum & bass sensibilities to devastating effect. 2010 sees them gear up for an album release and what better way to do that then by updating their sound for a deep and dark feel? Hospital Records’ Logistics comes along for the ride on Gridline a riotous effort that brings together immense techno sounds with grizzled bass notes and rolling drums. ‘They Could Love’ on the AA keeps things deep and dark, but delves even further into esoteric territory. Limited edition finished copy.An underground legend with releases on MJ Cole’s personal label, Profile, Reading lad Duncan Powell offers a classic slice of, as Jackmaster (Wireblock/ Numbers) described it, “James Bond Step”. A big string laden anthem. A goldmine of musical elements, Pushing was ripe for the remix treatment and as Falty DL was a big fan of the original, and as we were a big fan of him, set him to work stripping back the cacophony of melody transforming Pushing into a dark, broken 2-step swinger with flashes of vocals and strings, to awesome effect. Adam Jackson AKA Kidkut has played a major part in Bristol’s music scene over recent years with his Immerse label releasing consistently outstanding music from the likes of Kontext, Benga, & Late to name but a few. Now Jackson is teaming up with leading imprint Apple Pips for the release of his own much awaited debut single. Apple Pips is the brainchild of Laurie Osborne AKA Appleblim who has made the label one of the most desirable dubstep/electronica imprints out there featuring music from Martyn, Ramadanman, Brackles, Instra:mental & more. Kidkut’s single kicks off with the pointedly titled ‘ILove04’, a percussive roller that combines elements of broken beat, UK Funky, & early dubstep, with snippets of garage vocals and intense twisted bass. The arrangement cuts and flows perfectly, chopping between rhythms and melodic parts with the breakdown giving a definite nod of the head to oldskool hardcore. The flipside sees Kidkut going totally tropical with the magnificent ‘Lilt’, a percussive workout built around intricate drums and rolling bass that underpin the euphoric summer inspired synth lines. Bringing to mind the stripped down work of Karizma, this is sure to go down well with the Funky heads, indeed Bok Bok is already supporting the tune.

A – Querky An intricate drum pattern that continues to progress throughout the track (featuring some of the craziest cowbell patterns out there) lay the foundation. But the main attraction lies within the dirty bass workout and the subtle applied atmospherics that keep a tension and more importantly an interest for the listener. This tune builds on the legacy of some of those timeless ’96 drum and bass classics.
B – The Rec Room This excellent piece of 140 BPM jazz is a stand out track from the very first notes you will get to hear. Double bass interplays with the most delicate drum programming. From waterdrops to fingersnaps to piano chords, this piece of music has it all by the bucketload.
