Exit presents “Mosaic – Volume 1″

Exit presents “Mosaic – Volume 1″

Posted 28 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, video | 1 Comment

With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles.

As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. Well known producers such as Skream, Instra:mental, Scuba and Commix rub shoulders with some inspiring new talents such as Indigo, Synkro, Mode and Code 3. The theme of the album is quality timeless music, whether it be a dance floor killer such as Systems ‘Observation Point’ or Loxy and Resounds ‘Vertigo’ through to the tangerine dreamlike sounds of Croms  ‘Invisible Cities’ or Stray’s ‘pushed’, this album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today.

Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

Limited information, tracklists etc to come soon, but the formats and schedule will be as follows:

  • Two seperate 2-track 12″/10″ Samplers [EXIT025/026]
  • 4×12″ Gatefold LP version [EXITLP005]
  • 2xCD version [EXITCD005]

Critical Music – Label update

Critical Music – Label update

Posted 27 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

One of the most highly revered and rotated vocal D&B tracks from the past six months is back, this time with an ice-cold twist ready to take us into the frosty autumnal months. Drawing in the talents of Critical playmate Break to add his deft touch was always going to result in one thing – absolute dance floor devastation! Oozing class while smacking up the dance is something many producers can only dream of. The masterclass starts here.

Drifting pads with sexed-up guitar touches intro the ‘Redlines’ remix before the drums kick and we’re away on a blues-infused excursion with full vocal riding on top as the chords roll out. Don’t be fooled though as the fun’s just about to start! A quick repeated refrain and suddenly in crash the amens, edits and the most gut-wrenching sub to demolish the place. Vocal teases run throughout together with swathes of guitar but it’s the sheer tearout that wins in the end. Absolutely fantastic.

Flipping things over and Total Science come back with the classic sounds of ‘Scaremonger’. Seemingly an ode to the vibes of yesteryear, this one bounces with the best of them. A hot twostepping break carries the stabbing b-line that morphs subtly as this wicked bubbler moves along with ease. Proper Total Science doing what they do best. DJ support from Andy C, Bailey, Hype, Friction, Cyantific, Logistics and many more.

New D&B Releases

ENM004 Unite / Vibe – Break Engine Music 12″ Vinyl
Engine Music returns after taking an almost 2 year sabbatical. Having previously released material from the scenes most sought after artists, such as Teebee, Break and Noisia’s much anticipated ‘Angel Eyes’, Engine Music re-enters the arena with another prime cut from non other than Bristol’s undisputed king of rollers: Break. The title track Unite is an old school tinged, peak time dance floor tune. Filtered, rolling breaks, dubbed out samples and juxtaposing low-end frequencies with a growling bass line over the top, has Break’s signature all over it. A tune which will undoubtedly send any dance floor into a frenzy. On the flip you have Vibe. Here Break takes it back a gear or two. A laid back, jazzy roller with blissed out vocal samples, then before you know it he’s jumped straight back in to 5th gear. Expect further releases from German wunder-trio Triad and man of the moment Lenzman very soon.

ADRS002 Too Much Temptation – Foxrox & Geetox Audio Danger Records 12″ Vinyl
This release has had major support from Fabio and Grooverider (Rewind selection of the week), Twisted individual, Bailey and Crissy Criss, plus many more. Vienna based Foxrox (Yetis Demir) and Geetox (Michael Stary) have been into D’n'B for quite some time now. While djing and holding residencies at the most famous clubs in the capital of Austria (Beat It at Flex and All Souled Out at Roxy), they both decided – independently – to start to produce the music they love and like to hear on the floor. This was 4 years ago. After developing some skills and their own workflow, they decided to collaborate in the second half in 2008 and since then, their easy going work bears fruit. Sunrise – BMK / Coda (Zen Remix) Zen has come to Audio Danger Records.. Need we say more? Zen has joined our team to do a remix of BMK and Coda’s track Sunrise. The original version never saw the light of day but zen heard it through the grape vine and jumped at the chance to put his spin on this track. With vocals from Jett and live guitar from Sam Phillips, it satisfies all the Drum and Bass crew from the liquid lovers to the jump up heads.. This tune is a must for all.

AUX001 The Touch – ASC Auxiliary 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Auxiliary is the new label from ASC. It’s goal is the continuation of the Autonomic sound, that has risen to popularity over the last year or so. US based ASC has just released his debut LP on Nonplus Records entitled “Nothing Is Certain” and he now feels the time is right to launch his own label showcasing his unique sound.ASC has always been involved with the more experimental end of Drum & Bass having released music on such influential labels as Offshore and Warm Communications inspired by the works of 808 State, Art Of Noise, The Prodigy, Blame, Odyssey, Future Sound Of London, Slowdive, Monolake, Polar & Autechre.Starting out with what has to be one of the most eagerly awaited tracks this year, The Touch finally sees a release. It’s become a bit of an Autonomic anthem and Vaccine‘s lush 140 retake on the flip enlists the vocal talents of Riya, and makes sure that this plate gets maximum exposure from heads pushing different tempos.

XA012 Ultimate Survival / Varka – Sunchase Xtinction Agenda 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Loxy & Keatons’ label returns. Sunchase are making deadly, deep and hypnotic D&B, Do not sleep! Eastern Europe used to conjure images of bleak, snow-bitten landscapes and vodka-drinking Cossacks wrapped up in the remains of a bear. Up until a few years ago, it would never be a place where you instantly assume a thriving drum & bass community exists but like the rest of the world, Eastern Europe has taken a bite and got itself hooked. Sunchase has obviously pressed the right buttons because with tracks signed to Revolution, ELP and Moving Shadow amongst others, it seems his production prowess hasn’t gone unnoticed. It was ‘Remember Me’ that really catapulted him to the ears of the D&B masses, and in particular Latvian singer Yana Kay’s haunting vocal caused the likes of Concord Dawn, Fresh, Pendulum and John B to take notice.

MODULE003 Pressure Plate / Rodan – Judda / Krakota & Judda Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. October 2010 sees breakthrough artist Judda provide the third installment for Critical’s sister label Modulations. This Bournemouth-based producer has already received strong support and radio airplay from Radio 1’s Fabio, with releases on Subtitles and CIA – and now, critically, Modulations. True to Kasra’s faith in sounds unexplored, ‘Pressure Plate’ almost transcends space and time armed with its eerie waves of futurism. A clean drum-kit punches itself into a bumpy bassline proudly reminiscent of Ed Rush & Optical’s wormhole era. This funky upbeat stepper delivers a relentless growl, drawing it right back down through the underworld. Judda’s startlingly bright percussion rests neatly beneath a deeply penetrating rumble suitably inspired by the sounds of nu school heroes, Ulterior Motive – a signature quality Hades himself would be proud of. The flip side serves up a collaboration with fellow Bournemouth local, Krakota. A newcomer but no stranger to the scene, their joint venture ‘Rodan’ sounds deceptively simplistic initially – yet its intricacies quickly arise, easily appealing to the energy of the dance. Its naughty crisp snare awakens a hoarse, unforgiving husk which coaxes beneath your skin and induces a chill to the blood, dropping and rising, inviting you into the realms of rolling minimal, except with extra and irresistible bite, bounce and bass. DJ support from Fabio, Kasra, Sabre, Rockwell, Ulterior Motive & more.

ATLAS004 Useless / Relentless – Total Science, S.P.Y & DJ Lee Atlas Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Atlas Recordings is the brainchild of the legendary DJ Lee. Conceived in 2002 and set up as a platform for his burgeoning production output, it garnered a devoted following from the very first release, the huge ‘Udon / Double Down’ from Lee himself and long time cohort D.Kay. With a bulging DJ diary, Lee lacked both the time and energy needed to really give it the care and attention it needed and Atlas sadly closed its doors just a year later on release number three. Fast forward to 2010 however and Atlas is making a comeback with Lee vowing to make it a success again this time round. ATLAS004, the first release of the relaunch, is from Lee, fellow Oxfordians Total Science and current d&b hot property S.P.Y, with two huge dancefloor tracks, – Relentless’ b/w ‘Useless’. These tunes have been getting battered by the select few DJ’s lucky enough to have a copy and have been causing carnage in clubs across the world. They have created a buzz about Atlas not seen since the first release and with plenty more music in the pipeline, your sure to be hearing a lot more from Lee and his Atlas imprint in the near future….

NONPLUS008 We Speak To Those / Hi Res – Kassem Mosse Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Hailing from Leipzig in Germany is an artist who’s music has been pricking up many ears across the global underground over the last few years. It’s hard to put a finger on what it is about Kassem Mosse’s productions that make repeated listening a must, but the intricacy, fresh arrangements and musical depth definitely play a part in attracting labels such as the highly respected techno imprint Workshop, the legendary Soma Records and now Nonplus are honoured to present his latest 12”.
a) Kassem Mosse – ‘We Speak to Those’ First up on the a-side we have ‘We Speak to Those’ a 4/4 track of the highest quality that keeps you guessing from start to finish. The rugged and raw kick and bassline immediately set the foundations for the incoming awkward chord stabs whilst reversed beats lazily slur in and out over the main groove giving the track the unnerving feeling that its almost changing tempo. Random sound effects and a non conforming arrangement make this track about as predictable as the English summer. One listen to this and you’ll immediately understand why this artist is getting love from some of the scenes biggest players at the moment.
aa) Kassem Mosse – ‘Hi Res’ Phased drum machine breakbeat patterns and stutered percussion redolent of the early Detroit techno uprising give this track an outstanding quality of being able to conjure up the same feelings of hope and optimism for electronic music that the aforementioned era managed to. Thought provoking chord progressions take your mind on an excursion to the future and leave you gagging for an extended trip. Think skyways, flying cars and towering metal buildings footed with dark abysmal underworlds and you’ll get the drift. They don’t come much deeper than this one.

A – Querky An intricate drum pattern that continues to progress throughout the track (featuring some of the craziest cowbell patterns out there) lay the foundation. Two mixes not available digitally. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl, poly lined sleeves, hand stamped by the artist. This is the first release on vinyl for GCW and we hope to continue the series. It seems DJ’s only want to play what they get for free these days and this baby they have to pay for(!) so don’t expect it in too many charts. Positive feedback from Michael Mayer, Damien lazarus, Patrice Baumel and Eddie Richards to name a few. A Seriously underground release from the always alternative thinkers Swayzak.
A: Serieculture – Swayzak Mix (240 volts side) – (Serieculture a name for Swayzak side projects since 2007) this track is reminiscent of a vintage LFO tune with the usual Swayzak moodiness. Deep yet heavy yet subtle.
AA: Out of Platos Cave – Surrounded By The Sun – Bruns Submariner Mix (Greta Cottage Workshop Side) – Worked and reworked by Brun this remix began life in august 2009. Brun asked for the vocals to be re-recorded to his rough mix of the original. Super deep in the territory of Villalobos, a late night early morning loved up tune! LOCA001 In A Hole / In The Dark – Spherix Lowercase Music 12″ Vinyl
Having already released tunes for some of the scene’s most respected record labels (Immerse, Aquatic Lab, Bare Dubs, Sub continental Dub) and earned support from big hitters like Ramadanman, Peverelist and Scuba, Spherix steps up on his own lowercase imprint with ‘In a Hole’ and ‘In the Dark’. Based in Australia and run in collaboration with Kwality (‘Look Back’ on Tube10), lowercase is focussed on stretching the dubstep and techno boundaries while casting an eye on further horizons than just the dancefloor. ‘In a Hole’ and ‘In the Dark’ both highlight Spherix’s solid understanding of depth and masterful touch for abstract rhythms that are impossible to ignore. Built around cavernous stabs, crunchy drums and spacious, swooping subs, the effect is two tracks that suck you into their own murky planet. LOCA001 also features an exclusive vinyl-only locked groove on the flip, illustrating just why Spherix has earned a reputation as an innovator and hints at the future of the lowercase label. Subtrakt once again brings a release like no other, matching up two production outfits MachineCode & Broken Note for a single that delivers exactly what you would expect from these masters of sound design.
Broken Note: With several critically acclaimed releases quickly racked up over the past 2 years on established and much praised labels such as Ad Noiseam, Ruff (Peace Off’s slow and nasty sister), Damage, Prospct & Sustained; their reputation continues to be cemented as one of the current emerging forerunners in the underground electronic music scene. November 2009 also saw the release of the ‘Terminal Static’ retrospective album on Ad Noiseam, with notable remixes by renowned producers such as Hecq and I Am The Sun (Enduser and Casey Beagle).2009 showcased Broken Note’s talent with prominent festival gigs, with a headline sets on the Overkill stage at world leading Glade electronic music festival and Maschinenfest industrial festival; as well as tours and gigs in Europe, North America, Scandinavia & Japan.Their slower-tempo sound can only very loosely be described as Dubstep, with little in common with much of the scene’s output. Instead they draw from the Sino-Rastafarian sound and heavy bass; but also combine this with more of the kind of dark and aggressive beats that can be found in Breakcore and Jungle.
Machine code: Machine Code aka Current Value & Dean Rodell is a project formed out of the true respect and passion for Techno originated dance music. Neither need introductions to any of the scenes they are planing to manipulate as these two heavy weights of the underground have been outputting quality release after release for over 20 years between them. Now after the few months of working the machines at the Subdivision Studio in Berlin, the stock piled arsenal is ready to be broadcast and inflicted upon the DNB, Dubstep & Techno minions. Along side the relentless studio session the Machine Code live will be carried through with the ideal to bring it back to that out of the box sound with a true manipulated modular synthesis approach. Ready to Crush sound systems in there path with relentlessly rushing and hypnotizing DNB, lung collapsing Dubstep and dark clanging Techno derived from the darkest depths of there abused machinery…

Punch Drunk presents: V/A – ‘Worth the Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics’

“I knew straight away that this was a sound that would fit perfectly in Bristol – there is a lot of tension in the music that carries a satisfactory darkness with it, but it’s also lazy music. You don’t have to dance hard to move with it – it was born with a reefer in its gob!”

So said Pinch when I interviewed him in February 2005. Having witnessed the early DMZ and FWD>> raves that spawned this new sound we now refer to as Dubstep, and having gradually begun integrating it into the fabric of Bristol’s existing club scene, this young DJ’s instincts were proving correct. The following month I attended one of his Context nights – a dubsession by Loefah and Skream, on one of their earliest forays outside the Capital – and experienced for myself the sheer physical impact of dubstep at soundsystem volume. But even that was just a hint of what was to come. In April, Subloaded II sent a subsonic shockwave through the city, as Bristol shuddered under the weight of DMZ’s bass meditations. Those who survived the onslaught were changed forever, and Bristol’s destiny as dubstep’s second city became assured.

May 2005 saw the debut release on Pinch’s Tectonic imprint, which was the first of many new dubstep labels to emerge from the city. Being so much smaller than London, Bristol’s new generation of bedroom DJs and producers mingled freely in a close-knit community centred around the Rooted Records shop and the new club spaces (Dubloaded, Sub- loaded, Ruffnek Diskotek, Noir, HENCH) which sprang-up over the following months to cater for this rapidly expanding scene. Beats and ideas were eagerly exchanged on freshly-burned cd-rs in a period of unprecedented communal activity and cooperation, which would ultimately draw in and re-energise many of the city’s older generation of bass-explorers. Indeed, Bristol’s historical association with bass-orientated music was a crucial factor in the formation of a distinct and cohesive sound that triggered a feedback-loop of influence back to both London and the world beyond.

Almost inevitably, the Bristol micro-scene outgrew it’s grassroots, as producer-DJs like Headhunter, Appleblim, Joker, RSD, Pinch and Peverelist soon found themselves playing venues all over the planet. Once again, the ‘Bristol Sound’ had become an international phenomenon. Yet even today the core community still comes together for the regular mid- week Dubloaded sessions, which remain a testament to this city’s unshakable sense of strength and solidarity, as SGT. Pokes (the Honorary Bristolian who led the first charge at Subloaded all those years ago) calls the monthly congrega- tion to prayer.

- Gutterbreakz, November 2010.

Curated by Punch Drunk Records, Bristol’s premier bass music imprint, “Worth The Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics” compiles five years of Bristol Dubstep history across two CD’s.

Coming soon – “Bassweight” DVD [SRK]

Posted 21 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, video | No Comments

BASSWEIGHT is a feature length documentary that offers an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of Dubstep. Charting the genre’s growth from obscure origins in south London to global recognition today, the film features in-depth interviews with many of the DJ’s, producers and promoters who have been instrumental in Dubstep’s ongoing evolution.

Skream, Benga, Kode 9 and Mary Anne Hobbs are just some of the key players who have contributed, reflecting on the movement they’ve helped shape; a movement that has come to define the importance of underground music in the 21st Century.

This highly stylised film travels from Dubstep’s birthplace in Croydon to Europe, Brazil and Japan, demonstrating just how huge an impact this initially indigenous scene has made at an international level. Directed and produced by The SRK (Soka Afrika, Graffiti Asia, Rackgaki, Scratching the Surface: Japan), BASSWEIGHT documents this most clandestine of movements on its own terms and in its own voice.

Perfect 12” for the Future beats 31 records imprint.

P51UK020 Reboot The System – Part 2 – Gridlok & Dom / Gridlok Project 51 12″ Vinyl
Finished copy promo. This is the 2nd release in a 3 part series showcasing some of the drum and bass scene’s brightest stars remixing selections from Gridlok’s debut album “Break the System”. Side A | Prolix (Ganja/Hardware/Virus) takes Gridlok and Dom’s storming tune “London’s Burning” and sends it even grimier, even nastier. Massive builds and massive drops, with Prolix’s signature ripping basslines in full effect. Side B | During the release of the “AUTOPSY” album we had a remix contest hosted by Sony on their Acidplanet website. The tune was called “Labrat” and the most impressive submission was by none other than drum and bass’s own Audio (Freak/Hardware/Virus). He’s come far since then having just wrapped up his new LP for Virus Recordings, but in that busy studio schedule he managed to give us a chugging new version of his remix which just couldn’t wait to be heard, so here it is! These tunes have been receiving heavy support from many of the top djs in the scene such as: Andy C, AK1200, A-Sides, Bad Company, Cause 4 Concern, Dieselboy, Ed Rush, Friction, Noisia, Pendulum, Total Science, State of Mind, the Upbeats, and many more.

OK021 Mystical Mentality / Real Deal – Genotype Offkey 12″ Vinyl
Finished copy promo. Enter Genotype…After the huge success of Offkey #20 The Remixes, We are proud to bring you Genotype. An Old school Hardware legend that is now back on his A-Game. This 12″ for OK takes a step away from his dubbed-out outings soon to be available on Voodoo Music & Exit. The two tracks are Mystical Mentality b/w The Real Deal.It is now Genotypes turn to put his stamp on the Offkey blueprint. A Side: Mystical Mentality: The word ROLLER does not even come close to describing this number. A straight two step is laced with the most hypnotizing percussion one could imagine, bringing the track to the front of many deejays boxes. Do not be fooled into thinking this isn’t Techno influenced- Check Jeff Mills ‘Jet Set’ release and you’ll exactly what we mean, Genotype and Offkey are bringing you another angle on our blueprint and in doing so bridging the gap perfectly between techno and b-boyism. The track is underpinned a massive bass that has guaranteed rewinds & plays from London to Colombia. Time to get Mystical indeed. AA Side: The Real Deal: A break driven tear out from Genotype, amens and subs at the ready. Trademark reverbs and delays in the breakdown single towards the pressure incoming. The drop is pure vibes, and the track demands itself to be played at peak time in the set. A real treat from Genotype- splashes of Old Skool keep the track bubbling throughout and the big bass synonymous with genotype is ever present- driving the track home. The first release on the label from Genotype and what a way to start proceedings!

DEAD023 Break It Down – Temper D Deadly Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. For the 23rd outing on this imprint deadlyp turns to long time producer temper d, who has had a string of releases on his own imprint and thought it’s time to spread his wings a bit wider as he comes with 2 different tunes than you would expect from him. Both tracks have been doing damage on the dance floor as this 12 offers something for the tech heads and the jump up crew. ‘break it down’ is a techy tearout tune that does what it says on the tin, a short intro that gets straight to the point rolls then gives way to destroying bass, and crazy stabs. One to check for sure. ‘wanna say’ is a gritty styled jump up track . with flowing chords thru out the intro with a whispered vocal ‘ I know what you wanna say’ paired with the crisp beats that take you to the drop. Then all hell is let lose as the gritty b-line and the beats take control clever use of the vocal aid the tracks progress. This tune does serious damage on the floor!!! Support from Temper d , nicky bm, ash attack, to name a few!

CY004 Glurg Monster – Amoss Cyclone Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. a. Amoss – ‘Glurg Monster’ The atmospheric environment takes you on a journey that steadily rises & then falls into melodic breakdowns. There’s an extreme contrast of slow warping, deep & dirty sublow basslines that gives this track a general dubby style, overlayed with fastpaced complex percussion patterns and face slapping snares. The Glurg Monster’s been released! aa. Amoss – ‘Create More’ The flip side is quite minimalistic & glitchy, yet it’s still dancefloor & rolling. The tune’s intelligent progression builds all the way to the second drop, with steppy punchy kicks & snappy snares, bleeps & techy effects, intricate percussion & harmonious strings. Currently receiving heavy DJ Support from Spectrasoul, Loxy, Data, Outrage, Doc Scott, Sunchase, AMC & many more!

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It is expected that it will address the most fundamental questions of physics, advancing our understanding of the deepest laws of nature. The Panacea and Cooh ‘two of the most hardcore dnb producers of the scene’ took the concept of the Collider and turned it into a drum n bass monster tune! An incredible raw intro with heavy kicks and basslines dominate the track and turn into mayhem after the drop.. Test and be amazed. And you thought it was all over after that. Wait till you hear the flip. This is even dirtier than the A-side. The Sect teaming up with Cooh and you get dirty to the extreme!! SUBSOL010 Back For The First Time / Geordie Racer – Caspa Sub Soldiers 12″ Vinyl
After a short spell away, Caspa is back with one of the most highly anticipated releases of the year on his own Sub Soldiers imprint. First up is an anthem that has been lighting up dancefloors airwaves globally as of late, in the shape of ‘Back For The First Time’ featuring Dub Police label mate D1. Gathering heavy support on BBC Radio 1 from Annie Mac & Zane Lowe, as well as being battered in the clubs by the who’s who of dubstep A-listers this is fast becoming one of the biggest tracks to emerge from the scene so far this year and it’s not hard to see why with it’s catchy eutrophic chords and growling bass – this is no doubt going to be one of the tracks of the summer! On the flip Caspa teams up with another label mate; Subscape, for a tune that has torn apart countless dancefloors lately. ‘Geordie Racer’ takes no prisoners with its driving beats and outrageous basslines, anyone who has been lucky enough to be in a rave when this monster drops will no doubt tell you the carnage it creates in the dance. Again gaining support from dubstep royalty and being featured on Caspa’s ‘MyStyle’ mix CD. All in all this is one obscenely big release that you can’t afford to pass on – big things once again from the Caspa & the Sub Soliders / Dub Police camp.

SCREW004 C oast To Coast / Hesitation – Koan Sound / Koan Sound & Asa Screwloose Records 12″ Vinyl
Bristol boys KOAN Sound tracks are synonymous of dark gripping basslines that tear dance floors apart. . ‘Coast to Coast’ fits the filthy profile. The bassline is unpredictably sporadic and diverse and sounds like Batman beating up a rapist in a fucked up Philip K. Dick inspired dystopian future. Seriously. It makes me feel like I’m being subjected to a Voight-Kampff test whilst Harrison Ford tries to figure out if I’m a robot or not… ‘Hesitation’, a collaboration with Southampton’s downtempo maestro Asa, is a beatifically tranquil track driven by celestial vocals and lo-fi garage inspired drums.

HEK009 Tower Block / Béton Brut – TRG Hemlock Recordings 12″ Vinyl
TRG drops the bpm but stands tall for his first outing on Hemlock. Eschewing any notion of ‘feminine pressure’ in favour of a new stripped-back, brutalist sound. A- Side ‘Tower Block’ Straight-estate and 808s. This is the sound of Croydon, Sheffield and Detroit past, demolished and re-built in Cosmin’s unique style. On the flip ‘Beton Brut’ Let’s get brutal. An unsteady climb through some seriously dark space towards a pounding climax. Straight-up his most bare and jacking tune to date.

BRK015 Bleeps / Idée D’un Tropique – Bowly Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
After leaving behind the Somalian pirates, Geiom is cruising the sunny waters of the Indian Ocean when he picks up a distress signal on his scanner. He follows the signal until he locates a tiny remote island and a guy called Bowly, who said that he was on his way from France to the New World, but got totally lost. Judging by the age of the map he was using its easy to see how. Bowly spent his time on the island hanging out with the locals who amuse themselves by creating a unique style of music on some amazing handcrafted instruments. Geiom helps Bowly get on his way again, and leaves him with a more useful map. Some months later, Bowly beams over his music as a gift from his new found homeland in Canada – the tracks are like some strange mutation of those distant tropical players and the UK-based pirate radio transmissions that Bowly has been tuning into – Geiom loves the result and decides to send them straight over to Transition in London for mastering and release on Berkane Sol. This 12” has been getting played by selectors like – Subswara crew NYC (Soul Motive), Brackles (RinseFM), Grevious Angel (Soul Jazz), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Cooly G (Hyperdub), Shortstuff (Ramp), Spamchop (Wigflex), Oneman (RInseFM)…

RWINA008 My Vitamin Pillbox Nikes / The Love – Noah D Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
The eighth release of the infamous Rwina Records is brought to you by Noah Dickinson, better known as Noah D, or perhaps Noah Deezy if he happened to have a Paul Wall grill in his mouth. His 2009 megahit “Seeeriousss” slammed almost every imaginable chart all over the world and established as an all-around talented and respected producer, covering the whole spectrum of sounds from food for thought to dancefloor smashers. This time, the bass music legend from Portland (USA) delivers two deeper-edged cuts spilling over with street-smart bass swagger, a bit-for-bit perfect match with the type of music that Rwina has been pushing lately. On the A-side, “My Vitamin Pillbox Nikes” is an arresting combination of gully sounds from the block and forward-thinking programming that’ll tickle your brain each and every time you put this one on. The subs are one of a kind and the g-funk synthline expertly recalls the West-Side Connection glory days: bow down! On the flip, “The Love” dispatches a tender message straight from the heart, contrasted with a rough melody and harsh drums that’ll make you question what sort of undertones lie beneath this tune. All things said and done, Noah D delivers a unique and fresh release that’s a must for the deeper heads out there or the party-hardy jocks that want to spice up their sets without losing the impact.

DVA006 Dis Boy (DVA’s Hi Emotions Remix) – Cooly G / Scratcha DVA DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. The label’s sixth release is no exception. DVA’s remix of Cooly G’s ‘Dis Boy’ turns an already seductive track into a spaced-out dream: in the place of Cooly’s stripped down production it’s got all the psychedelic electronic subtleties and twists you might expect to hear in a Berlin techno tune, but actually brings her sophisticated vocal melodies more to the fore than the original version. The rhythm’s syncopations, meanwhile, move along in lazy leaps as if dancing in lowered gravity. Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 perform a similar job of total transformation on DVA’s own ‘Jelly Roll’. They play the original’s cheeky, cheery melody backwards, forwards, sideways and upside-down, bouncing it off itself in a hall of audio mirrors and allowing glassy synths to slide between the beats and bass. It’s a strange, slightly sinister and intoxicating reworking – one to get lost in. Bonus track ’32Da4′ is something else entirely; as you may guess from the title it’s in 3 time – a bizarre, slithering dubstep waltz that flows out of the speakers and around itself in unique style. Lesser producers would build whole movements on such an innovative tune, but for DVA it’s just another step in a compelling musical evolution.

b1 Scratcha DVA – Jelly Roll (L Vis 1990 & Bok Bok Remix)

HENCH020 Serial Killa – Eddie K Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. These tracks have been causing quite a stir…So tantalisingly disgusting that the likes of Rusko, Sukh Knight, NType, Doctor P, Flux Pavillion, Jakes and Trolley Snatcha can’t leave it alone! Eddie K is no newcomer to the dance music scene. Starting out as a drum and bass producer, his debut releases made an impact amongst the scene with tracks such as Planet Terror and My Sound remaining in DJs bags to date. More recently, Ed’s been making a significant entry into the dubstep world. His first dubstep release on H.E.N.C.H (Who’s the Hardest / The Shivers) had big reactions from all of the top names in the scene, which led up to his next release; his dubstep remix of DJ Prime Cuts ft. MC Dynamite – Warning, released on DSR at the end of 2009. This reached #2 in the Beatport dubstep download chart and recently featured in the latest instalment of Xbox’s ‘Crackdown’ franchise. His latest release sees him collaborate with Hench youngster, Minus, along with emphatic appearances by London-based vocalist, Beezy, and Bristol’s Shadz. If this release doesn’t serve as a tribute to the different directions dubstep has taken within recent years, then it certainly acts as proof that Eddie K’s sound and production skills have matured quicker than we could have anticipated.
A: SERIAL KILLA (FT. BEEZY & MINUS) – You might well have heard about Serial Killa before hearing the track itself. Arriving just in time to establish itself as a summer dancefloor destroyer, many a raver will soon be witnessing the floor shake when this one gets dropped. Beezy’s twisted hook line cuts short the euphoric intro and lets loose to a siren-like bassline. This is the kind of track that will have the neighbours pulling the curtains shut and calling the Police.
AA: STARLIGHT – A favourite of the D Style camp, Eddie K takes us on his maiden voyage into this aspect of dubstep production. Touching on the techno-tinged, atmospheric vibes similar to Komonamuk’s ‘You Fo’ release early in 2010, ‘Starlight’ is a track that would sit as comfortably in Laurent Garnier’s bag as any dubstep DJ’s. Forward thinking and high-paced the echoey background and sub bass contribute to creating one of the Hench imprint’s deepest tracks to date.

O4H002 Cant Stand The Rain – Silverman One4Ho 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. As with most things, the most interesting things happening in the monolith of a genre that is dubstep are happening at the fringes. cinematic second release for the brand new Berlin label One4Ho. Borrowing syncopation concepts from other genres and combining them with eerie vocal samples, One4Ho creates a mixture of dubstep that’s almost new genre in itself Using the mournful vocal and drip-drop sample from Ann Peebles’ track of the same name, the wobble in ‘Can’t Stand The Rain’ sounds like a massive industrial turbine in some torrential dystopian deluge. Dark, heavy and relentless. This tune has been receiving play from the likes of Falty DL, Starkeyand Clark, who also provides a soul crunching remix that seems to flip the original track’s concept of memory, love and loss into a 3 and a half minute masterpiece of dream like emotional manipulation.

RED003 Azure / Avoid The Noid Remixes – Jus Wan / DJG Pushing Red 12″ Vinyl
With the success of Pushing Red’s first two releases, we decided we would step things up with remixes from the scenes top producers in their respected genres. Both F & Headhunter need no introductions fusing unique ideas & production values when it comes to dubstep & techno. These two remixes showcase both style and class in a way that only F & Headhunter can pull off and we are truly honoured to have them involved.
A. Azure (F Remix) – Kicking things off is F with a outstanding recreation of Jus Wan’s already classic ‘Azure’. A sneaking intro builds on the original pads before dropping into a steady snare. Growling bass slowly sneaks into the picture and drops into and perfect blend of rough & smooth. F has taken an already great tune and kept the integrity of the original, while giving it his own signature flavour. Classic remix!
AA. Avoid The Noid (Headhunter Remix) – Another man who needs no introduction has graced us with a superb remix of DJG’s ‘Avoid The Noid’. Headhunter takes things very deep with a thumping 4/4, deep house kind of affair. A deep kick keeps the pace with deep low end that will work out any sound system. The original pads have been drawn out and sprinkled with the original key work. Fans of deep dubstep and house will love this tune and we hope as much as we do!
DJ Support: RSD, 2562, Headhunter, Komonazmuk, Synkro, Jus Wan, DJG, June Miller, F.

DUBLINE006 5 Point Palm Exploding Heart Technique / The Fifth Sense – Devnik Dubline 12″ Vinyl
Devnik (Bart) is an electronic music from the Netherlands. Devnik started producing in the late summer of 2008, just as a joke. As time passed, the music got better and better. First being into electro fidgety beats and getting signed on the English electro label Live-In Music, he eventually found out about a thing called dubstep. Dubstep now is his main goal, already being signed to Dubline Audio and having played along the likes of FuntCase, Cookie Monsta, Borgore, Unitz, Subscape, Crissy Criss, KOAN Sound, Ganja White Night, Sinister Souls, Osiris, Vyron, Switched Sources and more, Devnik is ready to destroy the dancefloor.

Coming soon – Swayzak vs Greta Cottage Workshop Split E.P

Posted 16 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, video | No Comments

Two mixes not available digitally. Pressed on 180 gram vinyl, poly lined sleeves, hand stamped by the artist. Limited edition of 350 copies, extra limited edition of hand printed sleeves (100/350) by the artist (Brun) to prove a point, that vinyl is still worth making and is still desirable whether you got a turntable of not!

Bored with the dull digital downloads of today’s so called dance music scene, Swayzak & Greta Cottage Workshop bring you a 100% vinyl only release.

A: Serieculture – Swayzak Mix (240 volts side)
(Serieculture a name for Swayzak side projects since 2007) this track is reminiscent of a vintage LFO tune with the usual Swayzak moodiness. Deep yet heavy yet subtle.

AA: Out of Platos Cave – Surrounded By The Sun – Bruns Submariner Mix (Greta Cottage Workshop Side)
Worked and reworked by Brun this remix began life in august 2009. Brun asked for the vocals to be re-recorded to his rough mix of the original.  Super deep in the territory of Villalobos, a late night early morning loved up tune! Out of Platos Cave – Torquay based duo, from the studio of Aural Imbalance.

Introducing the “Awkward Movements” label and their upcoming release

Introducing the “Awkward Movements” label and their upcoming release

Posted 15 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Awkward Movements returns to release the debut from London’s Dodger Man – one of the most talked-about new producers of the last 12 months. And with good reason, Dodger Man’s multi-instrumentalist background opened the door for his high-profile sets bombed with back-to-back dubs of his own creation.

His workings played-out live have gained him a reputation as one of the top emerging DJs, the height of which came following an impressive set at Bloc Weekend, after being hand-picked by Joy Orbison to share the bill. The natural alignment with Awkward Movements has served up his highly-anticipated debut record, and it doesn’t disappoint.

Marking Dodger Man’s official debut, Mango Tree steps in where the underground bass sound’s left off. Combining the same elements that pushed Floating Points and SBTRKT to the forefront in 2009 with the vibes that future garage has brought in 2010, Dodger Man takes it up with a deep bass rhythm, crunchy hi-end synth and drums for the decks and dancefloor.

Bridging the gap between tech and dub, 2_12 is the stripped down evil-twin on the B-side. Take a complex 22 track and strip it to its core without losing it’s personality and you’ve almost arrived. A uniquely complex tune – wanting to burst out but eerily contained in its black hole minimal approach of grinded synth stabs and one-shot styled drums.

Introducing – Genotype “Ritual Dance” LP [Exit Records]

Introducing – Genotype “Ritual Dance” LP [Exit Records]

Posted 14 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 2 Comments

After a lengthy break from the electronic music world, Genotype is back with an LP for Exit Records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm

Having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias Just Jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as Trouble On Vinyl, Renegade Hardware and Reinforced Records, its no surprise that he’s managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of Jungle.

Many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but Genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. The dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for West Indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates.

Genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.
