New D&B Releases

DIS039 Back In The Grind / District – Octane & DLR / Ant TC1 & Octane Dispatch Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Leeds based duo Octane & DLR are set to blow up. ‘Back In The Grind is the track that will firmly put them on the D&B map. This is one of the freshest and sickest D&B tracks a long time. Ant TC1 & Octane’s District (a track containing a rather cheeky South African themed sample; don’t worry it’s not the annoying plastic horn but rather a film about prawns to provide another clue!) DJ support from Artificial Intelligence, Anile, Bailey (as featured on BBC 1xtra), Break, C4C, Cern, Chris SU, Craggz & PF, Hydro, Icicle (as featured on D & B TV), IllSkillz, Kasra, Logistics, Spinline, Spirit, SPY,Subterra, Sunchase, Survival, Teebee, Ulterior Motive

P51UK020    Reboot The System – Part 2 – Gridlok & Dom / Gridlok    Project 51    12″ Vinyl
This is the 2nd release in a 3 part series showcasing some of the drum and bass scene’s brightest stars remixing selections from Gridlok’s debut album “Break the System”. Side A | Prolix (Ganja/Hardware/Virus) takes Gridlok and Dom’s storming tune “London’s Burning” and sends it even grimier, even nastier. Massive builds and massive drops, with Prolix’s signature ripping basslines in full effect. Side B | During the release of the “AUTOPSY” album we had a remix contest hosted by Sony on their Acidplanet website. The tune was called “Labrat” and the most impressive submission was by none other than drum and bass’s own Audio (Freak/Hardware/Virus). He’s come far since then having just wrapped up his new LP for Virus Recordings, but in that busy studio schedule he managed to give us a chugging new version of his remix which just couldn’t wait to be heard, so here it is! These tunes have been receiving heavy support from many of the top djs in the scene such as: Andy C, AK1200, A-Sides, Bad Company, Cause 4 Concern, Dieselboy, Ed Rush, Friction, Noisia, Pendulum, Total Science, State of Mind, the Upbeats, and many more.

OK021    Mystical Mentality / Real Deal – Genotype    Offkey 12″ Vinyl
Enter Genotype…After the huge success of Offkey #20 The Remixes, We are proud to bring you Genotype. An Old school Hardware legend that is now back on his A-Game. This 12″ for OK takes a step away from his dubbed-out outings soon to be available on Voodoo Music & Exit. The two tracks are Mystical Mentality b/w The Real Deal.It is now Genotypes turn to put his stamp on the Offkey blueprint. A Side: Mystical Mentality: The word ROLLER does not even come close to describing this number. A straight two step is laced with the most hypnotizing percussion one could imagine, bringing the track to the front of many deejays boxes. Do not be fooled into thinking this isn’t Techno influenced- Check Jeff Mills ‘Jet Set’ release and you’ll exactly what we mean, Genotype and Offkey are bringing you another angle on our blueprint and in doing so bridging the gap perfectly between techno and b-boyism. The track is underpinned a massive bass that has guaranteed rewinds & plays from London to Colombia. Time to get Mystical indeed. AA Side: The Real Deal: A break driven tear out from Genotype, amens and subs at the ready. Trademark reverbs and delays in the breakdown single towards the pressure incoming. The drop is pure vibes, and the track demands itself to be played at peak time in the set. A real treat from Genotype- splashes of Old Skool keep the track bubbling throughout and the big bass synonymous with genotype is ever present- driving the track home. The first release on the label from Genotype and what a way to start proceedings!

MODULE003 Pressure Plate / Rodan – Judda / Krakota & Judda Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Nov 2010 sees breakthrough artist Judda provide the third installment for Critical’s sister label Modulations. This Bournemouth-based producer has already received strong support and radio airplay from Radio 1’s Fabio, with releases on Subtitles and CIA – and now, critically, Modulations. True to Kasra’s faith in sounds unexplored, ‘Pressure Plate’ almost transcends space and time armed with its eerie waves of futurism. A clean drum-kit punches itself into a bumpy bassline proudly reminiscent of Ed Rush & Optical’s wormhole era. This funky upbeat stepper delivers a relentless growl, drawing it right back down through the underworld. Judda’s startlingly bright percussion rests neatly beneath a deeply penetrating rumble suitably inspired by the sounds of nu school heroes, Ulterior Motive – a signature quality Hades himself would be proud of. The flip side serves up a collaboration with fellow Bournemouth local, Krakota. A newcomer but no stranger to the scene, their joint venture ‘Rodan’ sounds deceptively simplistic initially – yet its intricacies quickly arise, easily appealing to the energy of the dance. Its naughty crisp snare awakens a hoarse, unforgiving husk which coaxes beneath your skin and induces a chill to the blood, dropping and rising, inviting you into the realms of rolling minimal, except with extra and irresistible bite, bounce and bass. DJ support from Fabio, Kasra, Sabre, Rockwell, Ulterior Motive & more.

CRIT048 Redlines (Break Remix) / Scaremonger – Total Science Feat. Riya / Total Science Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
One of the most highly revered and rotated vocal D&B tracks from the past six months is back, this time with an ice-cold twist ready to take us into the frosty autumnal months. Drawing in the talents of Critical playmate Break to add his deft touch was always going to result in one thing – absolute dance floor devastation! Oozing class while smacking up the dance is something many producers can only dream of….the masterclass starts here. Drifting pads with sexed-up guitar touches intro the ‘Redlines’ remix before the drums kick and we’re away on a blues-infused excursion with full vocal riding on top as the chords roll out. Don’t be fooled though as the fun’s just about to start! A quick repeated refrain and suddenly in crash the amens, edits and the most gut-wrenching sub to demolish the place. Vocal teases run throughout together with swathes of guitar but it’s the sheer tearout that wins in the end. Absolutely fantastic. Flipping things over and Total Science come back with the classic sounds of ‘Scaremonger’. Seemingly an ode to the vibes of yesteryear, this one bounces with the best of them. A hot twostepping break carries the stabbing b-line that morphs subtly as this wicked bubbler moves along with ease. Proper Total Science doing what they do best. DJ support from Andy C, Bailey, Hype, Friction, Cyantific, Logistics and many more.

On the A side we have Teknik & Dose droppin’ a serious stripped down bassline bomb… Rolling beats, nice shuffling’ hats and eery strings and sound fxxx. This one will get the headz nodding’ that’s for sure. Proper drum & bass from the other side of the world On the flip side we have Fortress aka Subtone & Stalker from Montreal Canada with a more neuro driven warped bassline track.. More sci-fi, deeper, and very well produced, definitely a piece to checkThis new Citrus release delivers diversity and quality from all over the globe.

SSS021 I’m Just Fine / Loud N Proud – Terravita Subsonik Sound Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Subsonik Sound Recordings is the brainchild of Ben Sage & Mark Subsonik. Founded in late 2008, the imprint has already seen much success and has even helped launch the careers of such artists as Fourward of Austria. Ben and Mark had an idea. This was, to release nothing but the best in quality music, that was creatively composed, and meticulously engineered to be the best it could be, and to obtain an outlet to release their own productions without any loss of creative control. This obsessive attention to sonic detail has shaped the imprint into what it is today – A well oiled musical machine.

New D&B Promos

DIS041 Alien / P45 – Survival Dispatch Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. ‘Survival returns yet again on Dispatch with another diverse pairing of tunes. The A-side “Alien” being the monster of the 2 which showcases Survival taking a dancefloor-destroying approach he can pull off with ease, listen on mid-way through the track for a drop-out of epic proportions that can only be described as pure evil. “P45″ on the flip we’d like to think is far more exciting than the standard tax form of the same name and more likely to make you pull a bit of a ‘bass face’ upon hearing; a bubbling roller that switches from bar to bar effortlessly and still maintains that rolling feel. Both tracks doing damage in the clubs and being supported thoroughly by the likes of Bailey (on BBC1xtra) Nymfo, Octane & DLR, Optiv, C4C, Ant TC1, Chris SU, AI and Anile to name a few.’

S.P.Y is without doubt the breakthrough artist of 2010, with a string of massive releases on some of the best labels in the scene he has been destroying dancefloors across the globe with his own brand of dancefloor funk. This single is no different, both sides are grimey, tech fused rollouts that have been mainstays in the record boxes of the great and the good over recent months. AUX002    Certainties EP – ASC    Auxiliary 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Following up from the ground breaking genre-defying first 12”, in this second release from Auxiliary, ASC offers up four tracks hand-picked from a selection crafted during the development of his Nothing Is Certain LP on NonPlus+. Four tracks which couldn’t be included on the album due to space constraints find a perfect home on Auxiliary as part of the aptly titled Certainties EP. Up first we have Reality Check, immediately showing an impressive hand of skillfully constructed loops, interjected with metallic stabs over a constant, numbing bass. Developing atmospheres is one of ASC’s key strengths and this track does not disappoint, with a sound that effortlessly evokes the more melancholic brand of sci-fi movie. “Everything around me became suddenly unreal” we hear a voice say; fitting for such an engulfing piece of music. Spectrum provides an alternative feel with a less intense, more electro-inspired motif which handles the trademark minimal Autonomic sound so confidently that ASC virtually ignores the need for that “beat” we might usually expect to hear. Kicks, hats and FX constantly overlap each other, quietly providing an immaculate structure you won’t even notice unfolding. Blips and pops take center stage on Metronomic, a remarkably unique composition chock-full of videogame-style snippets and noises which on their own may have appeared unusable to most but in ASC’s hands somehow come across strikingly well in the mix, ebbing and flowing at an appropriately mechanical pace. Finally, Autoreceptor delves back into that classic atmospheric, Blade Runner-esque sound-set ASC’s listeners keep coming back for. A succession of earthy kick drums from the outset somehow resist the temptation to take over proceedings and instead lead us on a calming journey punctuated by thoughtful strings and synths, with a sparsely-used vocal sample to die for. Stunning.
DJ Support from: Instra:mental, dBridge, Doc Scott, Loxy, Flight, Blu Mar Ten, Sabre, Rockwell, Consequence, Geiom, Presha, Alley Cat and of course, ASC.

a2 ASC – Spectrum

MODULE004 Try To Forget / Autonomous Robot – Nymfo Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Critical Music’s Modulations offshoot signs out of 2010 with its fourth instalment coming from the young Dutch upstart, Nymfo. Having released on labels such as Ram, Sgn:Ltd, 31, Frequency and Renegade,Nymfo’s talent is becoming all the more noticeable as one to watch for the future. Certainly one of his most solid pieces of work to date, this Modulations release doesn’t hold back with pure vibes from start to finish. ‘Try To Forget’ is exactly what you won’t want to do on hearing this gorgeous slice of D&B. Enjoy as a muted intro of hand claps, soft pads, tinkling fx and smooth vocal washes drift in as a creeping bassline seeps into the mix from the depths, enveloping the listener. An awesome, mesmerising journey ensues with sparse but oh so effective arrangement with the bass riff carrying the mood throughout whilst layers of atmospherics drip over the top to carry us away on what’s possibly the best Modulation yet! As we continue with the clunking clockwork sounds of ‘Autonomous Robot’, rolling in exactly as the name would suggest with tick-tock percussion and a gnarly mid-range bass lick that carries into the rough-riding drop. Then it’s away on a head nodding, foot stomping trip as cool drum splash edits serve to keep things moving on nicely. A fierce little runner to get the darker dance floors bouncing with ease. DJ support from Fabio, Doc Scott, Icicle, Klute, Kasra, Ulterior Motive and more.

FOKUZLP06 Soul Booster – Command Strange Fokuz Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
After the grand success of Brother’s ‘Hidden Depths’ LP last year & Madmen & Poets ‘Scandinavian Sunday’ early 2010 Fokuz stumbled upon another hidden talent. Hailing from a unusual place is Command Strange.. He is probably Kazakhstan’s first dnb producer at the moment. Yet not bound by borders or boundaries it’s the music what counts here at Fokuz and Command Strange is seriously one of those producers who you’ll need to keep your eye on. That’s why Fokuz proudly presents ‘Soul Booster’ which features a 15 track CD and a limited 2×12″ double pack with 4 of the best tracks we couldn’t leave out of any vinyl lovers collection. The A side is of course the title track ‘Soul Booster’ this dance floor track will boost anybody’s spirits the moment its dropped.. Command Strange sets the tone perfectly for his debut album with this heavy roller.    Turn it over for ‘Rainbow In Your Hand’ which is a sexy roller that’s just to cool for school.. the deep bass line.. the halftime breakdown.. it all fits seamlessly like you heard this guy produce for ages.. Yet still keeping it fresh.. Lush.. Plate 2 contains ‘You Can’t Touch This’.. Command Strange takes the vibe down a bit for a vibing deep roller for those special moments.. If r&b could be d&b then this would be its slow jam.. For the last side we turn to ‘Want You Back’.. one last time we crank it up a notch with some good ol rolling breakbeats and smooth piano touches.. A brilliant jazzy roller with a vibe like no other. With this LP sampler Command Strange shows he’s a man with many talents.. His sounds takes you all over the deeper side of dnb and back again.

SUBWAYDS001    Destination EP 1 – Various Artists    Subway 12″ Vinyl x 2
Subway Recordings has been a steady force within the dubstep scene the last 3 years.. Not only as a label but also as one of the most forward thinking party crews on the Dutch scene. Some of the leading Dubstep names have passed through Subway first before becoming the new rockstars of today. By flexing its sides from deep to hardcore they have been showing how far the word dubstep bends into multiple angles.. After releasing quality tunes like “Missed Calls”, “Unknown Suspect” & especially last year’s hotly tipped “Seeeriousss” its certain that this label knows quality when they hear it…And this Destination Compilation has the word quality written alllll over it.. Ranging from Mutant Funky/Dubstep to Garage combined with some of the grittiest & darkest sounds Dubstep has to offer… Subway once again shows what Dubstep is all about… Not clinging to styles or focusing on sub genres.. this compilation is all about “Dubstep” in every sense of the word…

When not running and recording for Hemlock he also records for Hessle and Hotflush, remixes for the likes of Planet Mu and Bpitch, and also has a debut album on the horizon. His music makes total sense on R&S, taking inspiration from the classic house, techno, jungle and rave that made the label what it is. Put this all together with the finesse and skill of one of the most hyped UK producers around and it’s a no brainer that it’s another essential slab of wax from the truly back on form label. ‘Stereo Freeze’ is aimed directly at the dancefloor and updates the classic Detroit electro sound for 2010. It’s going to unite the old school R&S heads who can file it with their dusty Dopplereffekt and Model 500 vinyl, and the young enthusiasts who have discovered the label through James Blake and Pariah. Play Loud! ‘Mass Dreams Of The Future’ mixes muted rave stabs and more electro basslines over some shuffling future house beats and deft sub bass, and perfectly accompanies the lairier a-side. With both producer and label having the utmost respect for each other, this was always going to be a release worth waiting for.

PL010 Dubtek EP – Dubtek Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
Paradise Lost Recordings is proud to present the first proper release from Seattle’s Dubtek: a 3-track EP in which Dubtek teams up with Australia’s finest, Droid Sector and Boot, as well as Italy’s Mouch to showcase three distinctive sounds. The lead track and a three-way collaboration, The Trancening brings together influences from progressive house/trance and mixes those with proper heavy subheavy dubstep to produce a tranced-up killer which will keep the most traditional dubstep fan satisfied while at the same time cause those more up for epic progressive and trance tunes to break out their glowsticks (well, we hope just in spirit!). These three accomplished producers demonstrate both their technical prowess in the studio and their talents for stirring up a frenzy on the dancefloor. The second drop just kills it! On the flip, Dubtek offers up two deeper tracks that are smooth as butter. Smoke works on a number of different levels bringing in a beautifully constructed smooth as silk bassline to compliment melodic atmospherics and a garage-inspired vocal hook that are sure to bring smiles to those on the dancefloor. He teams up with Mouch from Venice, Italy to bring us a brilliant, calculated dancefloor builder with dreamy arpeggios and ice-cold sci-fi fx and atmospherics – essential!

DUBLINE007 I Only Date Aliens / Robot Sounds – Vaski Dubline 12″ Vinyl
When DJ/Producer Vaski sent his demo to rottun manager Excision, he had no idea of the journey that he was beginning. With his first two tracks storming the beatport top ten charts, Vaski hit the studio, returning to his Electro House production roots for the massive Terror Dome EP, featuring the self-titled track as well as the hit single ‘You Wouldn’t Understand,’ Peaking again in the top ten of dubstep on beatport. Vaski’s productions and local DJ sets began to gain attention of international promoters and DJ’s. Vaski spent the next season DJing at many Twin Cities venues, playing at the famed First Ave, Dinkytowner, and The Loft all the while working on his next work. World on Fire EP shook not only the beatport charts but the entire dubstep community. All five tracks peaked in the top 25 in dubstep on beatport, two tracks in the top ten, and the famous ‘Get Down’ claiming its rightful place as a number one hit. This massive release rocketed Vaski to where he is today: smashing through his international tour, gaining rapid popularity for his unconventional stage presence, and continuously producing ridiculous and catchy bass lines. On the horizon for Vaski is the continuation of his tour, and his biggest production to date.

Coming soon – Martyn “Left Hander / Shook Up” [3024]

Posted 28 October 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

After a year dominated with collaborations (the Great Lengths remix double pack), fresh blood and inveterate genre renegades (Illum Sphere’s Titan EP & Altered Natives ‘The Bitch/Crop Duster’ respectively) We at 3024 came to the conclusion a new Martyn release was perhaps overdue. Not so much an album preview as a standalone document of a year spent expanding dance floor horizons over (a great many) seas.

3024’s milestone 10th release arrives in November with 2 brand new Martyn tracks as ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Dubbed out ambience rapidly takes root in the gaps between concrete snares & dissonant brass stabs as bass and synths elevate themselves for one last round of call & response sparring before dissolving back into barely audible dialogue.

Steam age industrial monolith ‘Shook Up’ swaps slink for haunted metronomic brutality, snapping quickly into focus first with relentless kicks before bass akin to an Atari2600 playing Berghain looms over the clouded horizon. Offsetting the claustrophobia is the first hints of melody as an impossibly slight piano phrase creeps in, countering rhythmical pummelling with ghost in the machine delicacy. Classically spastic 808 tendrils are underpinned by soaring synth strings as proceedings draw to a juddering close.

Capturing 3024’s musical progress with typical accuracy Erosie’s latest sleeve design is perhaps his best yet, echoing the back to basics theme with beautifully austere monochrome geometry curdling into something altogether more volatile at the edges.

Coming soon – Concord Dawn “The Enemy Within” LP [RISECD03]

Posted 27 October 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Nestled within what old-world Englishmen would call The Antipodes, New Zealand is truly an exceptional place. Taking huge pride in their native musicians, radio stations are bound by law to give over a fixed percentage of airtime to New Zealand artists.

This results in a rather special situation for independent dance music producers, such as Auckland raised Matthew Harvey, a.k.a. Concord Dawn. With a level playing field underground genres like drum & bass have thrived in New Zealand, with producers being lumped in alongside traditional pop stars and rock bands.

It’s no overstatement to say that Concord Dawn is an institution in NZ, proven by the presales for ‘The Enemy Within’ on iTunes New Zealand which saw the album slot in at a rather healthy #2 just between Shihad (NZ’s biggest rock band) and Maroon 5.

Featuring a selection of guest appearances, from fellow NZ D&B dons Bulletproof and Cern, to ‘80s pop star Rikki Morris ‘The Enemy Within’ provides a rich tapestry of tastes and flavours across the drum & bass spectrum that will prove to be just as popular on the world stage as it is at home.

HUMA8031 Ghetto Dope / 6 Feet – Gein & Mayhem / Gein, Silent Killer & Breaker Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Human Imprint, North America’s respected drum and bass label, is excited to present the HUMAN CHEMISTRY EP by Milwaukee- based producer trio Gein whose reputation for a sound is as mental as the infamous Wisconsin serial killer is legend. In the tradition of revered UK dnb producer Technical Itch, Gein ( Abel Gein aka Adam, and Saint Gein aka Ronnie) articulates the twisted reaches of the human soul with bold originality. Human Imprint head honcho Dieselboy enthuses “Gein has cultivated a truly unique, homegrown, North American techno grime sound — nasty!” “Ghetto Dope” — explosive dnb rooted in an old school hip-hop vibe — is a collaboration with respected Atlanta producer/musician Mayhem. The track’s laser precise hard tech thrust fused with Gein’s bloodcurdling sickness make “Ghetto Dope” pure dance floor crack. Gein joins forces on “6 Feet” with acclaimed Brooklyn producers Silent Killer and Breaker, with a wicked sound that combines inpspiration from military movies, hard east coast hip-hop and a form of hardcore called ‘screamo’. The track is well known for its huge bombastic intro that morphs into wave after wave of raw drum and bass pressure.. “Ghetto Dope” and “6 Feet” are enjoying support from global tastemakers including DJ Hype, TeeBee, Counterstrike, Evol Intent, and SPKTRM. Load this one up – crowd demolition guaranteed.

PRODUCT009    Turn The Page / Chamber – Craggz & Parallel    Product Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Two of D&B’s most respected characters, Craggz & Parallel, and it couldn’t have come a moment too soon. Since releasing their debut ‘Northern Soul’ LP on Valve back in 2006 the pair have stepped back, regrouped and are now ready to come full force with a brand new super-fresh sound that’s sure to raise heads throughout the scene. Drawing on influences from electronic music past and present from early techno sounds, 80’s synth-pop through to a myriad of contemporary dance music genres, Craggz & Parallel have created a truly unique and daring album sure to quench the most discerning and dance floor tastes whilst challenging the more traditional drum and bass album ideals. Even reverting back to analogue production techniques to combine with the modern creates an experience unlike any other around today so keep you ears open for the genius new sounds of Craggz & Parallel. The first Vinyl 12” features Turn The Page & Chamber Kicking off in fine style the title track opens with an epic intro awash with crooked bottle- nose FXand pads that mesmerize. Creeping bass tones follow until the drop into a massive hard-stepping slice of menacing technoid D&B that’s sure to bring out the screw-face in all who hear it. Then doing things a little differently, ‘Chamber’ features a stripped back approach that works a nasty bass-wave riff into a seriously intense slice of dark drum and bass. One for the more adventurous dance floors. “I don’t really say things like this much, but Craggz & Parallel are about to flip D&B on its head…” Breakage “Analogue synths, drum machines & +170bpm = Top album. C&P FTW!!” dBridge “Craggz & Parallel have taken a bold step towards a much deeper, more mature and personal sound; locking themselves away for 2 years has resulted in a truly inspirational album that will turn a lot of heads. One of the best releases in 2010 by some way, this definitely gets the Flight seal of approval.” DJ Flight

ATLAS004 Useless / Relentless – Total Science, S.P.Y & DJ Lee Atlas Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Atlas Recordings is the brainchild of the legendary DJ Lee. Conceived in 2002 and set up as a platform for his burgeoning production output, it garnered a devoted following from the very first release, the huge ‘Udon / Double Down’ from Lee himself and long time cohort D.Kay. With a bulging DJ diary, Lee lacked both the time and energy needed to really give it the care and attention it needed and Atlas sadly closed its doors just a year later on release number three. Fast forward to 2010 however and Atlas is making a comeback with Lee vowing to make it a success again this time round. ATLAS004, the first release of the relaunch, is from Lee, fellow Oxfordians Total Science and current d&b hot property S.P.Y, with two huge dancefloor tracks, – Relentless’ b/w ‘Useless’. These tunes have been getting battered by the select few DJ’s lucky enough to have a copy and have been causing carnage in clubs across the world. They have created a buzz about Atlas not seen since the first release and with plenty more music in the pipeline, your sure to be hearing a lot more from Lee and his Atlas imprint in the near future….

HBT025    Zero Point / Cold Spot – Katharsys    Habit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
After more then a year of absence its finally time unleash the new sounds of Habit.. Gein has been busy deep within the murky pits of nastyness to make sure Habit kicks off with an explosive start. Katharsys isnt a unknown name within the DnB scene with releases on Lifted’s Breed series & a collab on Counterstrike’s label its a sure thing that this young name is a sure shot when it comes to dirty sounds. Zero Point is best compared to a armored battle tank that is ready to crush its opponents with devastating effect. With gun turrets aimed at every angle its a hazard to be just in a 2 mile radius when this one drops. The flip Cold Spot is another rumbling rattler that wont leave the dancefloor unnoticed, big bad heavy beats will pound the speaker to shreds. If this wont move a party then your playing at a funeral. Habit is back and ready to kick ass and take names.

APHA004 The Limit / Get Lost – Fracture And Neptune Astrophonica 12″ Vinyl
Good evening Planet Earth… Citizens of Earth origin or any other planet in the Solar System…Fracture & Neptune are proud to present the fourth installment of their galactic phonographic recordings imprint: The Limit/Get Lost. This latest release continues the Astrophonica journey and futher defines the label’s signature sound, somewhere between a funk band lost in space and a warehouse rave in East London. This release is set to be the label’s biggest yet with it getting support from pretty much every trend setting DJ out there including DJ Storm, DJ Bailey, DJ Teebee, Ulterior Motive, Doc Scott, Fabio and many, many more. The Limit was featured on Zero T’s Fabric Live 52 and caused a stir instantly with it’s simple and dancefloor devastating vibes, so devastating in fact that it has been heralded as ‘the tune of sun & bass 2010′ by Jubei from Metalheadz…. Astrophonica has now been placed firmly on the d&b map. A-Side – The Limit dispatches us on a time-travelling mission, a return to the planet of dark warehouses, where the atmosphere is made up of dense angsty drum-driven paranoia and raging bass-bin winds that are strong enough to take your skin clean off. Currently featuring on Fabric Live 52 by Zero T, The Limit is set to be the biggest release on the label to date, and is sure to grace many an emergency escape pod this Autumn. AA-Side – Get Lost sees an unsuspecting funk drummer trapped in tractor beam bleeps, almost escaping with the help of a snare- gun, before being sent hurtling back into the reverbisphere in classic style, as oncoming lazer-bass stabs of Death Star proportions seal the track’s fate, hauling it into the brocking bay. One for the sample and break spotters, Get Lost promises a deeper voyage to inner space than its vinyl cohabitant, making APHA004 rewarding bounty for any jet-setting bass hunter.

SBLFLTD001   The Key (Atlantic Connection Remix) – Lukeino Ft. Paulie Rhyme / Mutt Sublife Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Sublife steps up for it’s first vinyl release with a hard hitting yet super smooth dancefloor friendly number. Atlantic Connection delivers a nice dubby remix to ‘The Key’ by Lukeino & featuring Paulie Rhyme. Deep subs and dubbed out vocal bits get the vibe moving as the beats and breaks roll out some choice rhythms. Be ready for some hands in the air when this one drops.. In the jungle, jungle, jungle! The flip side of this plate offers another heater for the floor with ‘Ruby Sky’ by Mutt, Calculon & Austin Speed. This tune starts out with a deceptively laid back and minimal intro with some fresh sound design and nice deep vibes. When it drops it hits tough with super low subs and running beats along with some choice vocal stabs and creative use of fx. This release has already received early DJ support from The Bachelors of Science, Crissy Criss, Submorphics, Sinistarr & Stunna amongst others.

NSDX006    Die For You Remixes – Cutline    Never Say Die Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. There aren’t many acts working in electronic music who can say they’ve had their music played by both trance demi-god Paul Van Dyke and drum & bass don Andy C in the space of a month. But Cutline can. The Bristol-based duo are at the forefront of a new breed of multi-genre dance acts, applying their no-nonsense, bass-heavy approach to everything from dubstep to D&B to house. After a year that’s seen Cutline remix The Qemists, J Majik & Wickaman, Nick Thayer and Mindflow (the latter of which smacked into the Beatport charts at #3), Cutline are now finally releasing their debut solo release for Never Say Die. ‘Die For You’ sees the duo in electro-house mood, complete with flowing piano chords, bleeping synths, heavily processed vocals and, of course, a drop that’s filthier than a 5am-kebab. It’s just another example of Cutline’s ability to turn their hand to almost any genre and absolutely smash it. Backed by remixes from dubstep and D&B masters Mindflow and Shock One, this latest release from Never Say Die is an impressively broad demonstration of the sounds and trends that are currently ripping club land apart.

DISTURBD023    Mindgames (Dabs remix) / New Dawn – Muffler / Rido    Disturbed 12″ Vinyl
The original track ‘Mindgames’ by Muffler (Hospital, Sighco, Freak) was released on Explicit Recordings back in 2007. DABS liked the release so much he made a wicked remix for Disturbd! Mister Dabs turned the original into a monster of a rollerrr for the bassline massive.. Wicked! Rido takes care of the flip in style. The man well known for his epic intro’s rips it up like only he can. Well timed synth stabs and a classical music style complement the rolling beat. BIG bassline dropping as the synth sounds roll on and on. Main stage bussiness!

DVA006    Dis Boy (DVA’s Hi Emotions Remix) – Cooly G / Scratcha DVA    DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
The label’s sixth release is no exception. DVA’s remix of Cooly G’s ‘Dis Boy’ turns an already seductive track into a spaced-out dream: in the place of Cooly’s stripped down production it’s got all the psychedelic electronic subtleties and twists you might expect to hear in a Berlin techno tune, but actually brings her sophisticated vocal melodies more to the fore than the original version. The rhythm’s syncopations, meanwhile, move along in lazy leaps as if dancing in lowered gravity. Bok Bok and L-Vis 1990 perform a similar job of total transformation on DVA’s own ‘Jelly Roll’. They play the original’s cheeky, cheery melody backwards, forwards, sideways and upside-down, bouncing it off itself in a hall of audio mirrors and allowing glassy synths to slide between the beats and bass. It’s a strange, slightly sinister and intoxicating reworking – one to get lost in. Bonus track ’32Da4′ is something else entirely; as you may guess from the title it’s in 3 time – a bizarre, slithering dubstep waltz that flows out of the speakers and around itself in unique style. Lesser producers would build whole movements on such an innovative tune, but for DVA it’s just another step in a compelling musical evolution.

CHST010 7 Breaths / Fear – Tunnidge Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
The landmark tenth release on Distance’s almighty Chestplate imprint sees the unprecedented addition of a brand new artist to the label. South London’s Tunnidge steps up and weighs in with two tracks packing equal amounts of bass pressure, gnarl and darkness. Two certified suckerpunches on wax. Distance has been supporting Tunnidge’s beats in his sets for a while, so fans will already be familiar with his brand of ferocious and driven bass music. His sound fits perfectly into the aesthetic Distance has created with the previous nine releases of his own productions, collaborations and remixes. These tracks have the definitive dubstep sound, with space and snare smack and maximum impact. 7Breaths is a peak time stomper, which will register on the Richter scale and make cracks appear on the dancefloor. On the flip, Fear is a masterclass in the use of sampled dialogue to full affect. Its ambient intro preludes a heavy widescreen dubstep experience, executed to perfection. These tracks make you realise that most dubstep newcomers are barely out of their nappies compared to Tunnidge. With major DJ support from the likes of Pinch, Ntype, Loefah, Cyrus, Joe Nice and 12th Planet, it’s obvious that dubstep DJs and fans will see this as a record that quite simply must be bagged and Tunnidge is a name to hold up alongside the very best the scene has to offer.

LOCA001    In A Hole / In The Dark – Spherix    Lowercase Music 12″ Vinyl
Having already released tunes for some of the scene’s most respected record labels (Immerse, Aquatic Lab, Bare Dubs, Sub continental Dub) and earned support from big hitters like Ramadanman, Peverelist and Scuba, Spherix steps up on his own lowercase imprint with ‘In a Hole’ and ‘In the Dark’. Based in Australia and run in collaboration with Kwality (‘Look Back’ on Tube10), lowercase is focussed on stretching the dubstep and techno boundaries while casting an eye on further horizons than just the dancefloor. ‘In a Hole’ and ‘In the Dark’ both highlight Spherix’s solid understanding of depth and masterful touch for abstract rhythms that are impossible to ignore. Built around cavernous stabs, crunchy drums and spacious, swooping subs, the effect is two tracks that suck you into their own murky planet. LOCA001 also features an exclusive vinyl-only locked groove on the flip, illustrating just why Spherix has earned a reputation as an innovator and hints at the future of the lowercase label.

EX7005    Heavy Artillery ft. Messinian / Reploid – Excision & Downlink    EX7 12″ Vinyl
Without doubt Excision and his Rottun Recordings label have been one of the dubstep success stories of the last few years. From humble beginnings in British Columbia, Canada, to a worldwide fanbase comprised of thousands upon thousands of fans. Anyone who witnessed Excision destroy dancefloors in Paris, London, Bristol, Manchester and a host of other European cities on his recent tour will understand the effect his music is having around the world. EX7 is Rottun’s sister label, and was home to one of Excision’s most recognisable hits yet, the infamous ‘Swagga’ (produced alongside Datsik). Here Excision teams up with another member of the Rottun camp to create two incredible pieces of filthy dubstep. ‘Heavy Artillery’ features Messinian, one of the USA’s most well known D&B and dubstep MCs. Taking the formula of using hip hop samples and turning it on its head with powerful original vocals that ignite the dance alongside some West Coast lead lines, this one is heavy on the hip!
Flip over and the gruesome twosome team up once more on ‘Reploid’, a gurgling bassline-led track complete with grinding syncopated synths and pounding beats. Both tracks featured heavily in Excision’s sets during his recent EU/UK tour and will no doubt be flying off the shelves this winter.

ARI205    Shanker – Cessman vs Joe Ariwa    Arwiwa 12″ Vinyl
Cessman has teamed up with Mad Professor’s legendary record label Ariwa to launch Dubliminal in fine style. July 2010 sees the long-awaited release of Cessman and Joe Ariwa’s collaboration 12′′ vinyl featuring four quality tracks – two from each producer. Cessman’s half of the 12′′ brings two very different heavyweight dubstep tracks – “Shanker” is a heavy-hitting rhythm which lives up to its name and causes serious bodily damage on the dance floor, while ”Emperor Selassie I” brings a more cinematic, dark, brooding rhythm track to the table with a haunting melody lurking in the background. Joe Ariwa’s side features “Wicked Man”, a new-school dub/dubstep crossover track which is truly next level. Featuring co-production from The Trixsters and the vocal talents of the worldwide performer Queen Omega. With an opening horn line, filter sweeps galore, a bassline reminiscent of King Tubby’s electronic outings, and classic Ariwa-style dub production a-plenty on this track, it couldn’t have been made by anyone except the son of Mad Professor! “Razor Sharp Dub” is the instrumental dub version of “Wicked Man” which will provide you with another chance to appreciate Joe Ariwa’s fine production skills and the new emerging dubstep/dub crossover sound of which this record is pioneering.

RAT039    Life – Tony Anthem and Axl Ender feat. Darry Dee & Skibadee    Rat Records 12″ Vinyl
Tony Anthem and Axl Ender’s Life took the dubstep world by storm earlier this year when it dropped on Rat Records’ sister label, Sludge. Now this full-′′‐on club anthem is back with a fresh package of remixes for all types of dancefloor. First up, Specimen A make with a remix that’s full of driving, street-′′‐smart booty flavour, making full use of Darry Dee and Skibadee’s firing vocals from the original, but adding some serious breakbeat attitude. Watch how the drums switch up for the second half‐this is next level business. There’s also a radio edit thrown into the package for good measure. Next, London producer Erb & Dub takes things in a drum and bass direction, feeding breakneck drums, wobble bass and searing synths into the mix for a rapturous end-′′‐of-′′‐ night floor filler. Finally, Florida badman Dustin Hulton takes things into full-on euphoria with sublime synth work andepic keys, before hitting us with the bass nfor maximum impact in the club. This is a genuinely world class remix package of one of the standout tracks of the year, in any genre. Whatever your flavour, make sure it’s part of your life.

Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene.

Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music. In addition to label and production duties, he also runs the massively successful SUB:STANCE night at Berlin’s techno Mecca, Berghain, the sound of which he committed to plastic in a DJ mix released on Ostgut Ton in January 2010.

Scuba

Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008) which was remixed by Marcel Dettman, Martyn and Surgeon, Triangulation (2010) took the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive.

For Triangulation (Interpretations) new allure is breathed into Scuba’s originals.  The listless beauty of Before is embued with a spine tingling warmth on Scuba’s luscious opening re-edit, Before (After). A remix of Latch by Will Saul & Mike Monday of Simple Records, Aus Music and Buzzin’ Fly, infuses the dubbed out original with a dose of bumping house flavor.  America’s totem of bass Faulty DL takes leave from the original On Deck with a low burring bassline and elegantly woven melodies drawn warmly across the whole. Scuba’s back with the old skool vibes on You Got Me (I Got You) but confidently skips the line by keeping it firmly in this moment. Canadian Deadbeat has showcased his own brand of dub laden electronics for the likes of Wagon Repair,  Scape, Spectral , Musique Risque and Cynosure over the past decade, his remix of Tracers sees him in classic form delivering a deep 7am techno heavy hitter. Joe made an immediate impact on the scene with his 12”s on Hessle Audio and Applepips over the past year, his rework of So You Think You’re Special has a slowly blossoming groove underpinning stuttering percussion, jangling keys and an expertly playful melody that opens out across the sparse background. Finally, South London’s Deadboy offers an understated modern jungle remix of Before with skittering hats and heavy bass that can’t fail to light up floors and faces.

New D&B Releases

ENM005    Spellbound / Fortune – Triad    Engine Music    12″ Vinyl
Engine Music is delighted to present this next release from German wunder-trio, Triad. Comprised of Henree with releases on Soul:R and C.I.A under his belt, Bastikal, headhoncho of the much respected PhunkFiction label and L Flow a classically trained musician and avid analogue synth collector. As Triad they belong to the new breed of producers, reexamining the conventions and reinvigorating the experimentation in the dnb genre which has been lacking unitl late. Two slices of mature, open minded dnb with Spellbound on the A side. A subdued, bass heavy stepper with a naughty bassline switch up. Fortune on the flip is a little half tempo number with dubbed out samples and a sultry bassline. Or as we like to call it: a slow grinder. Fans of the current Autonomic sound should not sleep on this! Dj support from Goldie, Teebee, Calyx, Lenzman and Flight amongst others.

RECIPE010    Cold One / Fallen Angel – Skeptical / Skeptical & Dub Phizix    Ingredients Records 12″ Vinyl
BIG TUNE!! So much attention this year has been on the minimal sounds within drum & bass. Skeptical, a name creeping up the chain, has really honed this skill of keeping it minimal yet powerful. “Cold One” is arguably his finest tune to date. Bringing back the hoovers, while delivering a totally fresh style, this is a must have tune. Dub Phizix from Manchester, is another new name, but with a slew of releases on big labels pending it won’t be long before he becomes a buy on sight artist. This co-lab with Skeptical is absolutely dangerous, watch the bassbins, i’m telling ya! The 8th release on Flight’s play:musik label see’s another excursion into deep bass and beats by the much loved Survival; this time in collaboration with long-time friend Chris Inperspective under their ‘Living In Shadows’ guise. The a-side gives you the melancholy but tough and rolling “Apple Fingers”. Flip over to the b to find the quirky sounds of “The Phlebass Consideration” – apparently inspired by an Iain M. Banks novel, it’s different and we like it.
DJ support: Flight, Goldie, Storm, Alix Perez, Redeyes, A.I plus many more

PM020 Eternalism / Paralyze Babylon – Paradox / Equinox Paradox Music 12″ Vinyl
The 60th 12” across the Paradox labels has landed! and to mark PM020 in style Paradox Music has finally added the legendary Equinox to their artist roster after nearly a decade of requests. ‘Paralyze Babylon’ oozes funk and dnb knowledge as Marlon Equinox demonstrates that it is possible to roll linear edited breaks (a paradox in itself). Low subs rumble underneath fx and reggae vocals whilst a great 808 b-line complements dirty amen loops that swing left-to-right, but still have that paramount linear funk – a simple master class in breakbeat science. Paradox switches his amen eq to complement ‘Paralyze Babylon’ for a raw jungle workout on the flip. ‘Eternalism’ is uncooked meat Paradox style! Crusty low pitch patterns with a heavy bass kick pedal keep everything in check whilst fx and eerie film samples swirl around intricate reverse breaks that don’t fall down the stairs. DJ Support: Utah Jazz, Bailey, Zero T, Gremlinz, Naibu, Alley Cat, Soul Intent, Fracture & Neptune.

The Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is the world’s largest and highest-energy particle accelerator. It is expected that it will address the most fundamental questions of physics, advancing our understanding of the deepest laws of nature. The Panacea and Cooh ‘two of the most hardcore dnb producers of the scene’ took the concept of the Collider and turned it into a drum n bass monster tune! An incredible raw intro with heavy kicks and basslines dominate the track and turn into mayhem after the drop.. Test and be amazed. And you thought it was all over after that. Wait till you hear the flip. This is even dirtier than the A-side. The Sect teaming up with Cooh and you get dirty to the extreme!! Another hard drum n bass killer for those who like the sound of the Freaks or need a drastic Therapy Session.. Brraaaaaap!

LARTSEKRAD Reverse Engineering – Rockwell Darkestral Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Artwork: Black Reverse Board sleeve, Bronze Pantone logo and text throughout, all sleeve and label information written backwards in keeping with the reverse concept. Cut in inside-out (record plays from centre label out to the edge) on a Scully Lathe. Release: Less a best kept secret, now a fully fledged artist of the moment Rockwell has been steadily building a reputation as one of the more progressive electronic artists around in 2010, with an ear for a different take on how to move dancefloors whilst also showing an adept ability at beat programming that is setting himself apart from his peers. Darkestral finally release one of the most talked about tracks on underground forums (10K plus posts on a DOA) and unleash the bewildering ‘Reverse Engineering’ – a track solely built from backwards parts, that has been delighting, confounding and confusing dancefloors the world over. Coupled with the polar opposite beauty of ‘Everything (& U)’, which continues the Darkestral love for contrasting sides on releases, and was recently licensed to FabricLive52, this track marks a stamp of quality on the burgeoning minimalist dnb sound by adding the emotional layer that Darkestral aa sides have become known for.

Ikonika & Optimum are proud to introduce their highly anticipated new venture: Hum + Buzz Records. This double A side debut release is right at the centre of the current UK crossover, post-genre sound. First up, ‘Aqueous Cream’ explores a different sound to the one Ikonika delivered on her recent Hyperdub debut album. A dancefloor ready track with smooth sub bass, staccato piano chords, trademark emotive synth-leads, underpinned by tough kicks, sizzling hi-hats and ricochet snares. On side AA, ‘Ampersand’ marks Ikonika & Optimum’s first official collaboration. Layers of synth melodies float above a steady four/four pulse and unpredictable claps. An angular, broken, melodic march at a house tempo.

Devnik (Bart) is an electronic music from the Netherlands. Devnik started producing in the late summer of 2008, just as a joke. As time passed, the music got better and better. First being into electro fidgety beats and getting signed on the English electro label Live-In Music, he eventually found out about a thing called dubstep. Dubstep now is his main goal, already being signed to Dubline Audio and having played along the likes of FuntCase, Cookie Monsta, Borgore, Unitz, Subscape, Crissy Criss, KOAN Sound, Ganja White Night, Sinister Souls, Osiris, Vyron, Switched Sources and more, Devnik is ready to destroy the dancefloor.

NSWL005 Hoes Come Out At Night (Ikonika Remix) – Cubic Zirconia / Bok Bok / Ikonika Night Slugs 12″ Vinyl
Another transatlantic soundclash on Night Slugs, this time centered around the New York-based R&B / acid house band Cubic Zirconia. On the A-side, elite Hyperdub producer Ikonika remixes Cubic Zirconia’s “Hoes Come Out At Night”, letting Tiombe Lockhart’s dirty rap vocals ride her charging 145bpm riddim. Infused with all of Ikonika’s signature cosmic synthwork, the ‘Hoes’ remix is also delightfully ghettotech-flavoured and primed for peak-time dancefloors. On the flip things get deeper as Night Slugs captain Bok Bok and Cubic Zirconia’s Nick Hook collaborate on an retrofuturistic acid-bassline banger by the name of “Reclash”. This time Tiombe is a ghostly presence, delivering disorientating incantations over Bok and Hook’s jacking 808 drums and soaring synth psychedelia. Night Slugs Booty from outer space.

NS007 The Velvet Connection – Velour Night Slugs 12″ Vinyl
The latest Night Slugs signing is steeped in mystery – a new project from two big producers (from the House and Dubstep scenes respectively) known only as Velour. “The Velvet Collection” is a concept EP of four subtle variations on a distinct theme: sleazy, luminescent, synth-soaked cosmic boogie infused with functionalist 808s. The EP is as much futuristic dance/sex music as it is an homage to iconic Roland hardware of the 80s. Opening track “Booty Slammer” announces Velour’s intentions right from the intro, before its longing chords give way to cavernously low booming 808 sub bass. Bittersweet as it is seductive, the track rolls in half- time, punctuated by a vocal refrain: “inside of me”. Very sensual! “The Scent Of Romance” and “Kick It Till It Breaks” both adapt the kind of jackin’ drums favoured by the Dirty Bird crew while Velour’s distinctive vintage synth work elevates them to the celestial realm. Both tracks work as spectacular tech-house centerpieces, but with enough low-end pressure to dominate any UK soundsystem. The EP is closed by “She Wore Velour”, a theme song for the project, which refigures the record’s sound palette into something more direct, driving and up-front. Arpeggiated twinkles and “Ripe Banana”-like pitch-bent beams of synth atop a massive diving sub are eventually consumed by an unforgettable chorus of keys. From the dancefloor to the boudoir, Velour is a pornographic synth odyssey on Night Slugs.

RS1008    The Temporary Thrillz EP – Space Dimension Controller    R&S Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
Limited first run on purple splattered vinyl 2×12” maxi EP format, that also has 4 locked grooves R&S Records return with another exciting young talent. Space Dimension Controller has already caused a fuss on the underground with his Love Quadrant (Kinnego) and Journey To The Unknown Sphere (Royal Oak) releases. SDC aka 20 year old Jack Hamill from Belfast makes music way beyond his years, high on concept, made on analogue equipment and head and shoulders above his peers. Probably the reason the exclusive Red Bull music academy chose him for their recent course in London. The Temporary Thrillz doublepack vinyl release sees Jack advancing his signature sound over this maxi ep format.
People have difficulty pinning down the SDC sound, I’ve seen it described as electro, space funk, cosmic disco, pop-psychedelic, techno-funk, jazz fusion, disco house and electronica. It’s probably all those things and more, and we are proud of the fact that its so hard to pigeonhole. A quick look at the tracklist of his Fact podcast mixes up Zapp, Class Action, Jonzun Crew, Model 500 and Der Zyklus which can give you an idea of where his head is at musically, and proves he’s a perfect artist for R&S.
The Temporary Thrillz EP contains intergalactic slow jams, deep club excursions and mid tempo space funk, all with the SDC trademark depth, soul and finesse. This is another release that will cement SDC as one of the best and most talked about young producers of the year.

HENCH021 Red (Chasing Shadows Remix) – Chasing Shadows Hench 12″ Vinyl
Two formats in stock, Limited Red Vinyl pressing and Limited Black Vinyl. With the massive ‘It Was Written’, Chasing Shadows’ dark production style broke through. Having now had two double-sided H.E.N.C.H releases; ‘Dr Sin/ The End’ and ‘Ill/Amirah’ and their track ‘Dream On’ forming the crescendo for the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, these talented producers are rapidly becoming household names within the dubstep fraternity. Once again this duo brings to the table two tracks that have been the talk amongst all who’ve bared witness in the club. Two distinctive, destructive productions that are guaranteed to cause delight.
A. LAID BLAK – RED (CHASING SHADOWS REMIX) – Spanish-style guitar riff builds to make way for one of the catchiest vocal hooks that Bristol’s ever produced. Continue further to make way for a characteristically epic bassline drop that will shake the floor from beneath you. ‘Red’ is an awe-inspiring track that builds constantly. Expect the whole crowd to have hands in the air and singing along to this one – truly a future classic.
AA. ODYSSEY – Odyssey is the kind of production that your neighbours are going to loath you for, but you just can’t stop listening to it anyway. An Atmospheric and expectant intro builds into juggernaut-like bassline. Couple this with its rolling tempo and crashing snares and you get the idea of why it works on your iPod, on the stereo, in the rave, and pretty much anywhere else that calls for a roller of this proportion!

Limited finished copies. Black Sun Empire’s latest project, ‘Lights And Wires’ is the long awaited follow up to 2007′s ‘Endangered Species’ and shows the trio flexing their musical muscles. One half of the album vinyl is set to be released on Shadows Of The Empire, containing a pick of the dubstep tracks taken from ‘Lights And Wires’.From the opening bars of ‘The 405′ it’s clear that Black Sun Empire have retained their distinctly stark techno influences blended with a more refined edge. ‘Dirty Friday’ strays further and deeper, mellowing the aggressive undertones with wide-open synths and delicately placed sound effects. Teaming up with SPL, Black Sun Empire bring you ‘Wasteland’, a track with an epic intro that drops into an apocalyptic vision of the future. DBOOT011 Mr.Midnight – Suckafish P. Jones Disboot 12″ Vinyl
Suckafish P. Jones, the self-proclaimed ringmaster of voodoo electronics, returns to evil up your soundsystem with his second EP for Disboot records, ‘Mr Midnight’. Released on 12″ vynil for Disboot Records, Suckafish summons up four tracks of jagged robot funk from the depths of the swamp. Perverting the tropes and conventions of Uk Garage, Grime and hip hop, ‘Mr Midnight’ combines pulsing low end rhythms with possessive melodies to create a soundtrack to that full moon night that never ends. Sleazy, emotional, violent and ecstatic at the same time, Suckafish’s latest offering maintains his reputation for productions that ignite the dance with raw, infectious energy and humour. ‘Match Set Point’ sets off the proceedings in style, with it’s jerky hip hop beat propelled by apocolyptic toms and metronomic pulses. Threatening to crack apart like thunder at every turn, but holding us in its chaotic hypnosis, the track swirls its way through psychedelic arpeggios and bent, cascading vocals which remind us that, yes, ‘…the bounce is back’! The EP’s second track, ‘Wild and Dirty’, turns up the temperature; with its fractured post-dubstep beat that snaps open growling, detuned basslines and robo-funk melodics. Urgent, epic and overheated, it challenges you to drop any head-nod pretenses and start shaking like you’re possessed. ‘Bubble Farm’ offers perhaps the most jittery dancefloor-oriented offering of the EP. Combining elastic synthesis with hip swinging rhythms and tropical electronics, the track jerks us back and forth in impossible maneuvers within its fractured, low end bounce and melodic intricacy. To end, ‘The Touch’ pours out of the speakers as a solid barefoot beat carrying a wave of rich, dense analogue synths. With it’s ridiculously loose, manic LFOs, ‘The Touch’ throbs and snaps its way out of the speakers with all the swagger of a gold-tooth club classic for the post apocalyptic future.

New DVD

SRKDVD001 Bassweight (Dubsteps first feature Documentary) – Various SRK DVD
BASSWEIGHT is a feature length documentary that offers an unparalleled insight into the subterranean world of Dubstep. Charting the genre’s growth from obscure origins in south London to global recognition today, the film features in-depth interviews with many of the DJ’s, producers and promoters who have been instrumental in Dubstep’s ongoing evolution. Skream, Benga, Kode 9 and Mary Anne Hobbs are just some of the key players who have contributed, reflecting on the movement they’ve helped shape; a movement that has come to define the importance of underground music in the 21st Century. This highly stylised film travels from Dubstep’s birthplace in Croydon to Europe, Brazil and Japan, demonstrating just how huge an impact this initially indigenous scene has made at an international level. Directed and produced by The SRK (Soka Afrika, Graffiti Asia, Rackgaki, Scratching the Surface: Japan), BASSWEIGHT documents this most clandestine of movements on its own terms and in its own voice.

One of the best documentaries made about the full spectrum of dubstep” Kode9

A beautiful snapshot of a fledgling scene.. A scene that would ultimately change the world of dance music forever.. You can feel the energy and the momentum in every frame..” Mary Anne Hobbs

Best depiction of the Dubstep sound and culture yet.” Joe Muggs (Mixmag)

Vicious Circle & Universal Project Present: Siren – “Broken Silence” LP

Vicious Circle & Universal Project Present: Siren – “Broken Silence” LP

Posted 12 October 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 1 Comment

After years of success in their relative drum and bass production outfits, Siren is a collaboration of Vice from Vicious Circle and Ruxspin from Universal Project. Their debut album, “Broken Silence”, forthcoming in November 2010 on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now.

Tracks such as ‘Snorkel’ (included on Andy C’s Nightlife 5 compilation), ‘Gumball Rally’, ‘Rollers Convention’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei.

Siren

Over the last 10 years Universal Project are responsible for hits such as ‘Vessel’ on the Virus imprint, ‘Haunted Dreams’ on their own label Universal Project and an EP on DJ Hype’s True Playaz, as well as ‘Streetilfe’ with DJ Friction for Advanced Recordings and many Renegade Hardware smashers such as ‘Danger Chamber’, ‘Comin’ Thru’ and the Black Techno EP.

The Universal Project sound is B-Boy breaks with techno elements and dubwise bass, and everything in between. Vicious Circle broke through in 2005 with their monster remix of Universal Project’s ‘Jackhammer’ and have been destroying dancefloors ever since with their unique sound. Releases such as ‘Between the Lines’ and the ‘Welcome to Shanktown’ EP on Renegade Hardware pushed them to the forefront of the tech dnb scene. Subsequent releases on Digital Soundboy, Critical and Quarantine displayed a diverse style that has helped establish them as heavy hitters across the board whilst collaborations with high profile artists such as Chase & Status, Dom & Roland, Fierce and most recently Jubei clearly demonstrate the respect they command from their peers.

After spending a lot of time in the studio together Vice and Ruxspin decided to create a new guise for their own brand of rolling future funk. Siren is the result. Both artists in their own right have toured the world from the farthest reaches of Europe to the United States and Asia, consistently destroying dancefloors and gaining a reputation as masters of their craft. The aim of this duo is to cover all styles within the scene and not be constrained by subgenres, whilst still main- taining a dancefloor ethos which is true to their UK roots.

Already much talked about and tipped for big things, Siren is the new act on everyone’s lips. Watch this space.
