New D&B Releases

DIS041 – Survival – Alien / P45 – 12″ Vinyl
‘Survival returns yet again on Dispatch with another diverse pairing of tunes. The A-side “Alien” being the monster of the 2 which showcases Survival taking a dancefloor-destroying approach he can pull off with ease, listen on mid-way through the track for a drop-out of epic proportions that can only be described as pure evil. “P45″ on the flip we’d like to think is far more exciting than the standard tax form of the same name and more likely to make you pull a bit of a ‘bass face’ upon hearing; a bubbling roller that switches from bar to bar effortlessly and still maintains that rolling feel. Both tracks doing damage in the clubs and being supported thoroughly by the likes of Bailey (on BBC1xtra) Nymfo, Octane & DLR, Optiv, C4C, Ant TC1, Chris SU, AI and Anile to name a few.’

EXIT025 – Various Artists – Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1 – 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1. With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles. As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. This album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today. Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

DISF010 – Truth – Stranger Than Fiction EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Fresh off the back of their debut ‘Puppets’ LP and a very successful European DJ tour, the trio from New Zealand drop another bomb, this time on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label in the form of a four track EP ‘Stranger than fiction’. Staying true to their sound, they roll out four very different tracks but all with the same distinctive Truth vibes. ‘Wednesday’ is first off to warm up the speaker coils and set the mood with their trademark eerie atmospheres, gut rumbling basslines and quirky paranoia educing effects. Just when you thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel, they drop a glimmer of hope with the soul warming ‘Stay’ with its heart wrenching strings, calming Rhodes chords and reassuring vocals, it serves well as the lull before the storm. Up next the clouds blacken again and it’s deep into the jungle with ‘Bubba Ho Step’. Tribal drums beat in the distance like some kind of rain dance, and so the storm begins. Sub bass slowly morphs into a pounding, precision timed, chest shattering mid range that is dealt in just the right amounts, this tune will mash up any dance floor without any repetitive overkill. Then we move into the apocalyptic aftermath of ‘The Future’. Once again the paranoia sets in and we realize there really is no hope for mankind after all. A shuffling drum step and percussion, cinematic atmospheres and a simmering mid range crackle and fizz like burning embers amongst char grilled concrete ruins. Having been caned by all the main playas over the last year such as Skream, Mala, Hatcha, Joe Nice and N-Type to name a few, this is a must for your record box.

b Truth – Stay
c Truth – Bubba Ho Step
d Truth – The Future

IDLE004 – Headhunter – Lost Prophet / Chasing Dragons – 12″ Vinyl
Whether throwing down techno-informed steppers for Tempa or creating juke-fuelled hysteria around crustaceans for Loefah’s Swamp81 imprint, Headhunter (and his Addison Groove alias) always brings a startling level of sophistication to his productions. These two cuts bear the same high standards while also revealing a little more about his sonic palette. ‘Lost Prophet’ surges forth on a rock solid four-to-the-floor propulsion, offset by snappy top end percussion before being swathed in haunting pads and dubby FX. ‘Chasing Dragons’ chimes in on an instantly upbeat tip, pummelling a soca rhythm against an undulating melody. Deep without being downbeat and immaculately crafted, IDLE004 adds ever more breadth to the legacies of Headhunter, Idle Hands and ultimately Bristol music.

LISHS002 – Von D – The Sunlight / Chacha’s Leggings – 12″ Vinyl
Subbalicious Recordings is more about sexy sounds between all the loud and noisy ones. That is why the Subbalicious team hooked up with producer Von D and singer Phephe, who you both might know from earlier works like “Show Me” of which Skream did a remix for on Chef’s label Sub Freq. Argon has also done quite a few releases from these rising stars and planned a whole album with music from both these artists early 2011. In previous years he has released tracks with Riscotheque en Kito on Skream’s label Disfigured Dubs, as well as on Boka Records and Black Acre. Subbalicious has been going about for quite some time now and honestly: it has been a very long time since our first release. Looking at where the music industry is going with vinyl vs. mp3 we followed our heart and express our love for great sound by continuing to release on vinyl. Sunlight is a track that will warm you up during these cold winter and spring months and is a tune that will continue to be played in the coming summers; timeless is what it is. And sexy of course. ChaCha’s Leggings is a more instrumental and bassy version of Von D sexiness. Follow the leggings everywhere, left to right, up and down. These tracks are currently being played by: Chef, LD, Madd, Gemmy, Heny G, Riscotheque and many others.

CMPD008 – Compund One – Pum Pum / Back Off – 12″ Vinyl
The eighth release on their self-titled label sees Compound One step out of the darkened lab to take time out from their usual techy experiments and head straight for the rave… A hugely diverse release that has been played across the board by DJs such as Mista Jam, MJ Cole and Brendon Moeller. As featured by Zero T on his recent Fabric Live 52 mix Pum Pum Beat gets its peculiar name from the rhythm of the kicks and snares rather than what people seem to think! The highly swung beats and quirky percussion form a backbone for a bassline that is hard to resist. Emotional Detroit style stabs complete the picture and the breakdown will have your hands in the air! Carrying on with the emo vibes of this release, Back Off sees the duo go right back to their roots with an early UK 2-step garage inspired number. Trademark Qualifide vocal cut ups and Fracture breakbeats come together to form the groove. Once again, the breakdown is pure hands in the air. Mistajam (Radio 1/ 1Xtra) – “Wanted to get a hold of the Pum Pum beat since hearing it on Zero T’s mix!” Brendon Moeller (The Beat Pharmacy / Deep Space Media)- “Pum Pum Beat’s got the all the sub, dub and funk you could want in a track”. James Mountain (Ministry / Ninja Tune) – “Class! I’m deep in it”. MJ Cole (Prolific) – “Wow the Back Off track is the nuts! Straight on the lappie for DJ action”.

BLKBTR01R – Man Like Me – Lovestruck Remixes – 12″ Vinyl
Man Like Me are no strangers to us here at Black Butter Records, fans of some of their more recent tracks such as ‘London Town’ we SO had to get involved with this new EP. The band are best known for their ska, grime, indie blend. Their brazen lyrics are less self-conscious than some of their musical counterparts, and revel in the realities, perks and calamity of being a young Londoner. The EP contains three brilliant original tracks – ‘Lovestruck’, ‘Why Bother?’ and ‘Run Over’ but more importantly for your dance floors, a nice selection of mixes for you to get your mitts on. Kill Light are first up, recently debuting on Cheap Thrills, that EP received a rapturous reception and got peeps watching. Stepping up to the plate once again, the duo’s garage-rave interpretation of ‘Lovestruck’ got us bogling away from left to right. Moda Music’s *Tom Staar* carries the original and lifts it to starry heights for a proper rave up, whilst for the same track *Brackles* provides the perfect basement vibe that will have your floor tripping out peak time. Our final course is brought to us by *Leatherhead*, who quite a while back provided a sleazy take of a Kissy Sell Out track. Sounding livelier than ever, he gives the instrumentals of ‘Run Over’ a fuller effect bringing that carnival feeling straight onto your floors.

DBOOT012 – Downliners Sekt – We Make Hits Not The Public – 12″ Vinyl
‘We make hits, not the public’ is the second episode of Downliners sekt’s trilogy with barcelonan bass music label Disboot Records in co-production with the band’s own label dsekt[dot]com. The deeply mysterious bass-tronauts continues their subsonic adventures, taking their craft to a new level of refinement. Haunting pads swell into lo-fi chopped melodies, crashing against persistent rhythms and coherent structures to create a near sonic shipwreck. Emotionally engaging and at calculated times claustrophobically dense, “wmhntp” is the middle ground between two extremes, one of excess and the other of minimal precision. This, their sixth official release, is the second installment of a trilogy started a few months ago with the critically acclaimed ‘Hello lonely, hold the nation’ EP which since its release in May 2010 has received wide spread support. From radio bass evangelists like Mary anne Hobbs and Rob Booth (both of them have commissioned exclusive mixes for their respective shows); to prestigious record stores like Sounds of the Universe and Boomkat (receiving category of single of the week on both places); having being reviewed by The Wire, Resident Advisor, Playground and many others magazines and webzines. The record has also received massive support from different artists around the world, among them The Bug (King Midas Sound), Kid Kameleon, François K and Hollywood movie director Darren Aronofsky.

New Dubstep / Funky / Techno Promos

NONPLUSLP002PART1 – LOL – LOL Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

RWINA010 – Rachet – Hyper Dimention – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Rachet, a new kid on the block, debuts with the banging Hyper Dimention EP for Rwina Records on October 25. Well, Rachet isn’t that new on the fold. He’s worked with MCs like Devlin, Jammer, Frisco and Beezy, to name a few, back in the day. Don’t be misled by the wrong spelling of Dimention, this release is positively on point with some heavy dancefloor smashers in the typically forward-thinking Rwina fashion. Lead track ‘Hyper Dimention’ combines R&B and dubstep to a result for a track that explores and spans numerous strains of music that haven’t even been invented yet. The vicious ‘Electrical Basssweep’ pits hard-hitting drums against a fierce, dark bassline and a ravey but dripping bleepy melody. Closing the EP, ‘Sega Megadrive’ is a bubbling beast that imports a dramatic feeling to home-listeners but an energetic one to dancers, thoughtful peak time stuff in this one!

b1 Rachet – Electrical Bass Sweep
b2 Rachet – Sega Mega Drive

ESTR001 – DRS – Grown Man Biznizz – CD
The first time you listen to this incredible album you will know that Drs – apart from being one of the longest serving, hardest working & most highly acclaimed uk mc’s ever – is also one of the countries most singular voices and is fast becoming one of it’s finest song writers. If for some reason you’re just onto this guy, you should know that proof has been bubbling away since day dot. 15 years as a leading club mc speaks for itself, but few successfully translate this quality “into the booth”. When Del & Strats started dropping nuggets like “Skint” back in 03, people knew it was on. Then tracks like “Tryin’” from “subject to status” (fat city 2005) brought another unforgettable chorus that once again hinted at much, much more. Last year, the anthemic “sound of love” (development 2008) with Zed Bias & Jenna g illustrated another awesome side of his vocal potential. But with this piece of work DR has achieved another level. It’s all unmistakably DRS (there is no wild stylistic departure here) and it’s the single most impressive representation of “british-urban & potentially-popluar-music” out there right now! nCredible songs with true cross0ver potential (“what matters again” & “tears”) sit sweetly alongside contrasting slabs of heavy club bangers (“slow that flow”). Drs’ uniquely balanced & articulate style compliments every piece and the overall sound (with heavy workings from s.c.i) will smash any dancefloor, car stereo or sales chart. Check kouros music’s finest moment aka the sublime “tears” – a dead cert which is already getting serious props. “what matters again” hits a similar spot in that you instantly picture large groups of people, moving & singing in unison, regardless of prevailing taste or geography. True anthemic quality in an exquisitely made, coherent and honest album…..and when you weigh up everything the incredibly versatile & relevent drs delivers here – it’s an accomplishment few artists out there can hope to match.
