CRIT052 – Enei, Eastcolors & Noel – Cracker / Danger Dance – 12″ Vinyl
Critical Music marches forward, tapping into yet more new talent for 2011 resulting in an absolutely filthy D&B excursion that has had the likes of Andy C going ballistic for it. Hailing from Russia, Enei, who has already bagged himself an exclusive album deal with Critical, Eastcolors and Noel may be familiar with a few but with this release they look set to cement themselves in the collective consciousness of drum & bass aficionados the world over. ‘Cracker’ is rough, rugged and very, very raw. Ultra-tech D&B could be the term to use as the trio of producers come together to deliver what could possibly even be one of Critical’s biggest releases to date. Full of sick mid-ranges, snapping drums and sneaking subs, this one is cold, dry and full of funk that’ll have people full-on skanking around clubs until the early hours. Absolute gold. Enei then goes it alone on the more experimental ‘Danger Dance’, that intros with a sparse arrangement of stalking pads and fx that set the mood of unrest. In bounces a low-slung bass and it’s away we go on this gorgeously glitchy, 808-laden ride that sits perfectly alongside the likes of Rockwell and indeed Critical. DJ support from Andy C, Alix Perez, Friction, Icicle, Cyantific, Nu:tone, Logistics, Rockwell, Lenzman, Hype, Jubei, Ulterior Motive and more.

b Enei – Danger Dance

SYNDROME017 – Billain – Probes / Horus 8 – 12″ Vinyl
Just imagine if you could take cells from any producer in the world and mix them up to create your own super producer who whould it be? Well if by any chance the combo you want would look something like, Spor, Phace, Noisia, Mayhem with a dash of Misanthrop then you’re in luck.. Cause that super producer is Billain. Hear his Vinyl debut here on Syndrome Audio with the astonishing tracks Probes & Horus 8. Probes sounds like a mutant cyborg that’s reprogramming your brain with its razor sharp beats and unpredictable mid range. If you listen to this big time production when you know why we call him the super producer. Inspired by the greats of twisted funk and now ready to compete in the big game that is DnB. Horus 8 is trash in every sense of the word. Dirty festering bass lines roam around this track like buzzards circling a dead pray.. They wait until you can’t anymore and then strike to deliver the final blow.. Billain is a deadly producer you should keep your eyes on.. If you can’t hear it in this release then this kind of dnb just isn’t for you.

New D&B Promos

CRIT053 – Seba & Paradox Ft. Kirsty Hawkshaw – The Light / As If – 12″ Vinyl
As we approach spring, the seasonal turn brings with it an uplifting release set to be essential listening for all the eardrums still recovering from the dance-floor damage committed in the darker months. This release hails from Seba and Paradox, no strangers to the d&b circuit, as Critical Music outputs two stunning tracks prepping us for the warm sun-shining days to soon come. Courtesy of Kirsty Hawkshaw, ‘The Light’s beautiful vocals soothe away those frostbitten blues from former months; they swathe around blissful old-school piano keys, breaking through layers and rising over irresistibly smooth drum patterns. A deep bass-line unexpectedly makes an appearance, underlining the evocative summertime goodness – with this aurally euphoric track you can almost taste the blue skies. Seba and Paradox dig deep underground and unleash the dirt on the flip with a jungle-tech tour de force in the shape of ‘As If’. An ominous intro erupts into coarse drum patterns, enveloped by dirty bass that’s just downright mean. A straight-up dance-floor box-ticker, this is a track of volcanic proportions. Beware the explosion!

Ideal for late night listens and deeper than the ocean! dj support from Genotype, Marcus intalex, Doc scott, Lee, Blu Mar Ten and more.

One for the liquid crew and the jump up crowd! The B Side is much much deeper affair and Random Movement himself said ‘It’s the best tune I have heard in a year. ‘Kevin King lays down original vocals as only he can do on this collaboration ’Easy on the Motion’ between Canada’s Mutt and California’s Calculon. With LTJ Bukem supporting the tune, as well as Asides, Stunna, etc, this 12inch is not one that will leave your bag for some time.’

FSRECS002 – Counterstrike / Katharsys / Forbidden Society – Extreme Current Value remix / Redeemer – 12″ Vinyl
A : Counterstrike & Forbidden Society – Extreme ( Current Value RMX ) A powerful half beat tune full of metal kicks, a masterpiece in the sense of drum editing. The tune turns into a stepper, that is even more intense and makes you wanna shake your head like at a metal concert. If you wanna destroy the dancefloor, this killer remix by Current Value is the right weapon of choice! B : Forbidden Society & Katharsys – Redeemer. Straight up dancefloor orientated tune, the right stuff for a hard dnb set! Styles of both producers are combined perfectly in this tune – big bass, powerful snares, distorted recesses (reeces?), another killer to make the crowd go absolutely nuts, named Redeemer!

DVA007 – GuGu / Scratcha DVA – The Afro Cuban EP – 12″ Vinyl
The seventh release on DVA records comes from a young, unknown resident of Manchester named GuGu. Staying true to the DVA style, his two tracks are fine examples of todays hybrid Funky House scene, maintaing the 4 to the floor drum patterns whilst drawing on a wide range influences… and as it suggests in the EP’s title, is packed full of Cuban flava. Straight up music designed to make people dance. It wouldn’t be right to get a DVA release without a feature from the man himself, Rinse Fm’s Grimey Breakfast show host Mr Scratcha DVA. As a slight deviation from the norm – and in a way a return to the styles his earlier production – DVA lays down a heavyweight slice of synth laden half step, defiantely one to pull your dirty face too. Check it out and get back to us with your thoughts.

HF026 – Sepalcure – Fleur EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following the release of their stunning summer debut EP ‘Love Pressure’, Sepalcure – a Brooklyn-based duo composed of Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma – have announced their second EP featuring four brand new cuts, due for release in late January 2011 on Hotflush Recordings. Having produced for years individually as Machinedrum (LuckyMe) and Praveen (of Praveen & Benoît), their new collaboration breathes a new life of its own, reflected in its distinctive, lush sonic warmth and a refreshing style of composition that is as equally fitting on the dancefloor as it is in the comfort of one’s home. The Fleur EP shows a progression of Sepalcure’s depth of field, weaving distant chords, soulful vocals, and organic rhythms into vibrant, immersive soundscapes, with echoes of house, techno, and dubstep within. Be it the gentle melodies of “Fleur”, the ascendant effervescence of “Your Love”, the relentless bass of “No Think”, or the suspending ambience of “Inside”, it is a sound that is unmistakably Sepalcure. Their live performances have been gaining steam over the last year, beginning with appearances at Unsound Festival, Dub War NYC, and The Bunker, followed by a live showcase at Portland’s Decibel Festival in September, they are set to embark on their first European tour with other Hotflush artists this December. They have also composed an original track in Darren Aronofsky’s new film Black Swan, in theatres starting December 2010.

THIN16 – Funckarma – Dubstoned 5 EP – 12″ Vinyl
As we’ve been stalking the Funckens for ten years now, after stumbling upon their parts series on DUB when we were still students, trekking religiously to the Sirius on weekends, eventually spending nights in bus shelters to assist to half a live in a school that only served wine, and trying to organise a bash with them in a squat that burned down a week before the bash, before finally inviting them to an exhibition closing party that incidentally marked the beginning of Thin Consolation, they seemed an obvious choice for a release for the tenth anniversary of UNREzT and the fifth of Thin Consolation. Having already graced Thin Consolation with an album in 2006 as Dif:use (with long-time partner Cor Bolten), this time we requested from them a 12″ of a more step-ish inspiration, the fifth in the Dubstoned series, the previous editions having been released on Highpoint Lowlive, Ad Noiseam and Eat Concrete. In so many words, the Dubstoned series is the last major electronic musical genre to have appeared – Dubstep – to be given the special Funcken treatment: a dark and brooding, dub-flavoured electronica. Not for the faint hearted. Mepeche is co-produced by Phinx, and Spectrum is a remix of a track by Eedl, released on the album ‘Everse’, on the Barcelona-based label spa.RK.

a1 Funckarma – Mepeche
a2 Funckarma – Mako
b1 Funckarma – Spectrum
b2 Funckarma – Removal

HDB049 – Funkystepz – Fuller / Hurrican Riddim – 12″ Vinyl
Funkystepz are a collective of house producers from North London, with a show on Rinse FM and a string of self-released underground hits under their belts. They’re definitely some of the producers to watch out for this year. After a period of trial and testing on dubplate by DJs like Kode9 and Marcus Nasty, this first release for Hyperdub doesn’t mess about. ‘Fuller’ is a dancefloor destroyer of a very British vintage. Hard without being rigid, with a cold, elastic sense of melody that bounces and snaps around the midrange between the bass and snares. Tempered by an occasional organ stab, it’s one of those tracks that will lively up any club straight away, doing away with the forced euphoria of a lot of contemporary dance music, and instead honing the harder-to-master skill of energetic intensity and building anticipation. ‘Hurricane Riddim’ takes the listener through a number of contrasting moods simply but effectively. Opening with heavy orchestral stabs and military snares reminicent of classic grime, the addition of a complicated, snaking bassline gives the track a jump up feel, and the eight-bar aggression gives way to sections of orchestral calm and a sad but bouncy piano melody.

New Bass Music Promos

EXIT024 – Consequence – Snakes & Skulls / Dub Bounce – 10″ Vinyl
After Consequence’s debut album on Exit as a virtually unknown producer with only a couple of releases to his name, he has blossomed into a much loved and highly regarded musician who’s compositions have that rare listen again quality. His work has been an integral part of the Autonomic movement over the past two years and will continue to be long into the future. With a recently completed second solo album and also a collaborative album project with friend Joe Seven under the alias ‘They live’ on the release schedule, Exit Records present this single as the first of a 10” series reminding us of his talent. On this 10” he turns his hand to the 140 bpm deep dub style and proves that his sound has no boundaries. ‘Snakes & Skulls’ As usual Consequence manages to mix calming ambience with vibrant drums to achieve that cinematic trait that he’s known for. Combining those elements with earth shaking sub bass he works up an organic sounding roots track that beats away with entrancing tribal energy.Unintelligible vocals flutter in and out with filtered drum effects and percussion creeps in and out which keeps the whole piece moving nicely. ‘Dub Bounce’ is truly a remarkable insight into Consequences ability to create character and trigger emotion with his music. Drums and bass swing so hard they could break your neck Dilla style, whilst despairing atmospheres and odious sound effects wreak havoc on your sense of security like watching a horror flick on acid. Production quality and depth of sound are second to none which comes as standard with Consequence, but this track has it in abundance and is sometimes unfathomable. Its deep and its very dark, but also highly addictive so use with caution.

MEDI037 – V.I.V.E.K – Pulse / Roots – 12″ Vinyl
V.I.V.E.K drops his first single since his much talked about double pack ‘Feel It’ was released on DEEP MEDi in October 2010. ‘Pulse’ opens with V.I.V.E.K’s unmistakable dark, resounding, industrial production with layers of subbed out techno touches and efx. ‘Roots’ however on the flip lurches and twists over a deep cinematic melody, V.I.V.E.K on meditation vibes.
Radio Support: Nihal (Radio 1), Benji B (Radio 1), Gilles Peterson (Radio 1), Youngsta (Rinse FM)
DJ Support: Mala (DMZ), Distance (Chestplate), Tunnidge , Cyrus, Hatcha,

DOT005 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #2 – 12″ Vinyl
Accompanying the debut LP remix EP number 2 straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold. Duffstep’s debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ is a heady potion laced with influences of dub and down tempo beats, winding through layers of melody and synths whilst vocals soften the blow providing a nice, warm and fuzzy edge to the thick slabs of sonic concrete. Though you won’t have to wait before a nice big bass-line knocks you down on your arse again.

IBR006 – Various Artists – Tax Haven II – 12″ Vinyl
The second “Tax Haven” EP from Iberian Records brings together three different producers operating from within the Lisbon and Barcelona bass enclaves for another varied selection of Bass’n'Groove flavours… First up sees Migrant (aka 23Hz) debut on the label with “Monolith”, a driving monster of a tune propelled by an amen break conjugated through a Kuduro drum pattern. The production comes fitted with extra heavy low end body pressure as standard, as we have come to expect from Migrant in his many guises, and the general vibe has a deep Tribal Jungle take on it. Floor shattering appeal here. On the 33rpm flip sees the return of Lisbon based brothers Octa Push with their “Legos” cut featuring K-Tronik. A result of “playing videogames surrounded by African masks”, the production brings a typically beat savvy attack oozing raw bashy energy, with synths and bleeps fighting all-comers. K-Tronik’s (legendery member of Portuguese Hip Hop duo Nigga Poison) brings tight creole verses to tell a cautionary tale of cocky philandering in the hardcore suburbs of Lisbon. Pure originality! Last up sees Cardopusher’s first release on the label with “Dembow Together”. Since moving from Caracas to Barcelona, Cardopusher has gradually progressed from mid range aggression towards a more Funky tropical vibe. Slowing down the bpms to a Funky jam Cardo takes a Reggaton beat pattern and whilst keeping the summertime vibes, forges something all together much more powerfully dirty with Techno/Electro stylings and the sounds of ancient analogue drum machines.

2 Octa Push Ft. K-Tronik – Legos
3 Cardopusher – Dembow Together

NONPLUS010 – Actress – Harrier ATTK / Gershwin – 12″ Vinyl
With a sound that no one can quite touch, nor classify, it comes as little surprise that an outside-the-box artist like Actress would come into the path of Autonomic. The mastermind behind the cult-worshipped Werk Discs (whose roster includes enigmatic producers Lone, Lukid and Zomby), Actress took the electronic spectrum into another direction entirely last year with ‘Splazsh.’ Released on Damon Albarn’s imprint Honest Jons, ‘Splazsh’ brought dynamic Hypercolour to the insular greyness that his ‘Hazyville’ album captured so well. After his acclaimed debut on Nonplus+ in 2010 – the astral ‘Machine And Voice’ EP, the intriguing artist returns to the label with ‘Gershwin / HarrierA bonafide classic to sit in the ranks alongside Cybotron, in comes a typically all-encompassing, textured four-on-the-floor stomper from Actress. A side: ‘Gershwin’ Conjures the bright metallics and intricate programming of a Ford workshop in a futuristic, sci-fi Detroit, but without the repetitive motion: no two bars are the same, and the track moves through so many colors and sounds it’s hard to keep up. Slamming with sharp, piercing lasers, roughly cut beats sit on a building melody that wraps itself around dreamscape New Order esque synths. aa) Actress ‘Harrier ATTK’ brings back the smoky, blurriness of ‘Hazyville,’ with an especially hypnotic twist. It’s the kind of Actress track that makes a listener lose all sense of time and space: a head nodder that could stay on loop for days, where the smallest subtleties come out loudest. Equal parts sublime and austere, a simple melody loops as a clean bass drum hits gently, and tangible sounds crack in the background.

HBR002 – Optimum – Light Year / DS-10 – 12″ Vinyl
Hum + Buzz return with their first release of 2011 from label co-founder Optimum. After releasing his debut EP ‘Max Power’ for Planet Mu in 2010, contributing to the excellent Night Slugs Allstars Vol. 1 and Modeselektion Vol. 1 compilations, Optimum returns on Hum + Buzz with two sci-fi, dancefloor tracks. ‘Light Year’ is a 4X4 time travelling excursion through brass rhythms, dotted arpeggios and razor sharp percussion. Gangsta techno meets UK bass, a crossover that Optimum seems to be making his own. On the B side ‘DS10’, named after (and partly made on) the Korg software for the Nintendo DS, is a menacing march that progresses into the unknown. All superfluous elements are discarded; the track focuses squarely on the relentless bassline and unpredictable 808 drum pattern. With these minimal ingredients combined, DS10 is a certified sound system bomb!

WNCL004 – Knowing Looks – Abandoned Skip / Last Kiss At The Plains Hotel – 10″ Vinyl
KNOWING LOOKS aka Toronto based producer Jason Hopfner, records for Musique Risquee, is the co-founder of Grain Records and is a welcome addition to the WNCL stable. ABANDONED SKIP is an unashamed dancefloor killer with it’s hard as hell 2-step beats, irresistible shuffle, swathes of funky electronics and perfectly placed rebel-rousing vocal chants. LAST KISS AT THE PLAINS HOTEL, an epic tale of love and loss, displays a mastery of cut-up production and arrangement that nods as much to Bacharach and Mantovani as it winks to Todd Edwards and Akufen.

PPRO14VSX – Photek – Avalanche / 101 – 12″ Vinyl
Full colour sleeve pressed on 180 gram Vinyl. Regarded by many as the finest electronic producer of his generation, the mysterious LA-based Photek enjoyed considerable success throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with his own mutant breed of jungle and drum’n’bass. After a four-year hiatus from releasing music (and just over ten years since his last LP ‘Solaris’), the legendary Photek is back with a new sound and brand new 4-track EP – an occasion definitely worth the wait. Never one to stand still, Photek’s enviable reputation has been built not just on his ability to inspire both his fans and peers over the years through his productions but also through his knack of reinventing his sound time and time again. With his early work (under a variety of aliases) proving hugely popular in clubs, it wasn’t until ’97 when he released his now-classic debut album ‘Modus Operandi’ that he truly arrived, defying both his existing fan base and the Jungle scene as he pioneered a new alternative to the big room rollers that defined the era at that time. Three years later he surprised again, embracing Chicago acid-house and techno for his second artist album ‘Solaris’ in 2000, working with the brilliant Robert Owens on the classic single ‘Mine To Give’. Further EP’s followed after the turn of the millennium, as well as a number of film score credits (including The Matrix), but in 2011 he has once again shifted the gears, re-inspired by UK bass music and the current crop of young producers – Photek has a new sound to share with the world. Multiple Radio Plays by: Benji B, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam, Nick Grimshaw, Greenmoney, Jon Kennedy.

Instra:mental “Resolution 653″ LP [Nonplus Records]

Instra:mental “Resolution 653″ LP [Nonplus Records]

Posted 21 February 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Instra:mental have completed their debut album and there’s no better home for it than their own firmly established label Nonplus+. Having made a name for themselves over the last few years as avant-garde, forward thinking producers who set trends instead of following, they lay down a full length album showcasing where their productions are at now rather than being a summary of where they’ve come from.

First off we get a taste of the album on the Resolution 653  sampler 12” (NONPLUS013) with electro x juke style tracks ‘Thomp’ and ‘When I Dip” which have both been savaging dance floors worldwide over the last few months in the sets of DJs such as Loefah, Addison Groove and Benji B amongst others.

Resolution 653 LP Sampler

aa) When I Dip

Released 21st March.

Instra:mental Resolution 653 LP Sampler ‘Thomp’ / ‘When I Dip’ [NONPLUS013] by stholdings

Moving on to the full LP we are treated to the complete gamut of Instra:mental’s ability. Tracks like ‘Aggro Acid’ and ‘Talkin Mono’ give us crude analogue acid modulation at its rawest that twists and gurgles across the sound spectrum with mesmeric manipulation, whilst others such as ‘Memory Implant’, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Plok’ take us deep into synth arrangements that have become synonymous with their name.

Having worked predominantly at higher tempos and made a significant impact on the Drum and bass scene in 2008/9/10, most of this album is focused on the 120-140 bpm tempo and they have studied every avenue to seek out new and interesting possibilities for originality within a tempo range that has been so thoroughly exploited over the years. They take elements of eras gone by and revitalise them with the use of old skool equipment mixed with modern production techniques. As usual their impressive hoard of vintage hardware plays an integral part in their characteristic sound. Whether it be techno, dubstep, drum and bass or electro that they turn their hand to, their Instra:mental sound shines through and makes genre irrelevant.

VOOMUSIC004 – Raiden – Forbidden Fruit / Bogotá – 12″ Vinyl
Perhaps the most daring of the Voodoo catalogue so far, Raiden returns for his second solo outing with two numbers that truly explore the percussion concussion of Voodoo Music. Forbidden Fruit – To paint a picture of this track it would be fair to say Raiden channeled the ghost of Les Baxter got him in the studio. The exoctica of Mr Baxter is married with Raidens bass work. Subtle but yet weighty and prominant enough for dancefloors. The track is the deep blue unknown- keys twinkle in the track like tropical fish speeding past coral.  Theres a famous description of how people took in Baxters music “Listeners  were able to stroll around some taboo emotions, view a pagan ceremony, go wild in the sun or conjure a demon, all without leaving home hi-fi comforts” The same can be said for Raidens ‘Forbidden Fruit’ – A journey through some very different landscapes. Bogotá – The tense cousin of the first track, Bogotá comes through weighty and uncomprimising in its approach. A sustained rhythm is driven by subbass that is capable of moving the plates underneath us, Raiden once again shows us a very different side to his production. Most of the percussion in the track was recorded live by Raiden himself, bought whilst on his tours of South America. The track was a labour of love that already has dancefloors in awe – Doc Scott recently publicly commented “Just wanna say – Raiden - Bogotá caused major ruptions @ A Bunch Of Cuts last week, big, original, fresh DNB!”.

PRSPCT012 – Current Value – The Spell / Code Of Chaos – 12″ Vinyl
Like a highspeed battle tank PRSPCT Recordings storms back to the scene with an obvious buy on sight record.. Current Value is finally up for his very own PRSPCT release and again he knows how to devastate the very ground he’s walking on.. By teaming up with Snow & Nanotek he’s upgraded the CV sound.. as allways.. The release sets off with ‘The Spell’ a mystical industrial roller.. Imagine a warehouse filled with Santa’s elves working on high quality beats all cute and cuddly.. Only to be plowed down in one foul swoop  by CV’s bulldozing mechanical bass lines leaving destruction, chaos and dead elf bodies.. Painting the halls red with blood! Flip it over for ‘Code Of Chaos’ for another heavy duty roller.. This one is a bit more stripped down but that doesn’t mean this one is ‘Minimal’.. Pounding rattling beats infused with deadly tech bleeps. A sure shot when it comes to testing out the rig.. Drums & Basses.. as DnB was intended!

INMIN002 – Various Artists – Covered By The Dust EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Unquote and Mr. Sizef are two upcoming producers hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia. Their deep, abstract and creative approach (tune names included) have earned them releases on such highly praised labels as Hospital, Med School, Liquid Brilliants, Absys, Blu Saphir and Basswerk. Having a bright future in front of them, these two are taking atmospheric drum ‘n bass to another level. A-SIDE: BLUE MOTION & UNQUOTE – COVERED BY THE DUST Fans of the Russian duo, Subwave will be immediately drawn to the dust. Blue Motion teams up with Unquote for this atmospheric masterpiece. Blissful pads, a catchy electronic riff, and crescendoing bass creates the introduction, before wading into an early break. Intricate drum patterns articulate the center of the track, bringing with it deep, rumbling bass and a simplified female vocal. It’s not long before the second break hits, and the track’s formula starts again. Try to listen to this one all the way through. You won’t be disappointed. B-SIDE: MR. SIZEF – 170 STEPS OF LONELINESS Where do these 170 steps lead? Would the siren in the intro be any indication? As the sweet, pitched-up female vocal rolls through alongside a slightly distorted synth riff, the bass comes flanging in with a galloping sort of feel before all of the elements come together for some great, traditional drum ‘n bass. Great use of effects on this one. C-SIDE: MR. SIZEF – LILY IS A FLOWER WHICH IS GIVING RISE TO LOVE Heavy bass and female chant samples accompany a tribal drum style to introduce this beauty. The drums filter in alongside multi-layered pads. A short break rides through right away, but it isn’t long before the sophisticated rhythm and chopped up vocal come back around. This tune would make a wonderful set closer. D-SIDE: UNQUOTE – WE BREATHE YOGHURT LYING ON A STRAWBERRY BED One would be curious as to what a track such as this one would sound like. Images and visuals floating through your head as you press play; the airy, angelic pad intro induces you into a trance-like state before soothing piano lines and a pitched-up vocal reminiscent of the early hardcore era takes you away. As the drums come in with a half-time feel, it is easy to imagine Japanese taiko drummers playing their part.

c Mr. Sizef – Lily Is a Flower Which Is Giving Rise To Love

Has devastated any dancefloor that Forbidden Society or Current Value have played it to, especially at Therapy Sessions where the crowd went crazy to it! B – Birth Cycle Drum’N'Bass roller with the usual quality of Current Value combined with the harshness of Forbidden Society. MODULE005 – FD – Stack / Sent Down – 10″ Vinyl
Critical’s beloved new-kid-on-the-block Modulations imprint draws up another naughty storm in the form of ‘Stack’ b/w ‘Sent Down’ featuring Script. Having had releases on top-notch labels including Metalheadz and Critical, London-based FD is swiftly gaining recognition for upping the dance floor ante with scrumptiously deep demeanor. ‘Stack’ is a stepper that delivers efficient pulse and vibrancy, notably in its teasing bassline and clean snare, peppered with bleeps and vocals conjuring a feel of eerie, futuristic space-age. The AA side retains the energetic deep-liquid flow – ‘Sent Down’s initially gentle pads venture into a neat, nasty break and a mean grizzly, almost unpredictable, bassline. Listen out for the dark distorted vocal that brings you down to the darker corners of the dance floor. Shimmying symbols linger above the downright devilish drum-kit. Definitely a playful bass-heavy monster,’Sent Down’ is a shuffling pumper of a tune that deserves to wake the neighbours. And if they hate that resonating, violating bass, it can only be a good thing. DJ support from Noisia, Loxy, Logistics, Kasra, Ulterior, Motive Jubei, DJ Lee, Octane

SECOPS015 – Seba & Method One – Heavy Traffic / Mr Downstairs – 12″ Vinyl
Secret Operations enter the new year with “Heavy traffic”. A heavy roller from Sweden’s finest Seba teaming up with San Franciscos finest Method One. Heavy bassline, steppy beat, and chopping amen breaks is what this track is all about. The flipside “Mr. downstairs” is more laidback, and draws the memories back to the Good Looking days, back in 96-98 era. Watch out for secops 016. This time Seba collaborates with Finnish Producer/DJ Physics. It’s already got support from Storm on her Ministry of sound show.

CYN002 – Cyantific – Obey / Bounce It – 12″ Vinyl
DJ support: Andy C, High Contrast, London Elektricity, Logistics… Cyantific has been laying down his signature space-age sound since 2002 when Hospital Records embraced him into their family after a tipoff from High Contrast. Ever since then we have seen Jon go from strength to strength, with his achievements like BBC 1Xtra Breakthrough DJ award to his international tours and infamous 3-deck DJ sets. Cyantific launched his own label last year with the beautiful hit ‘Brighter Day’ (ft Logistics) and ‘88mph’. The New Year sees the label’s second release, which is nothing short of futuristic perfection. ‘OBEY’s’ sublime production and lively Back To The Future vibes make this tune an overwhelmingly enjoyable dancefloor record. ‘OBEY’ is an unconventional roller but needless to say sheer genius with an immaculately produced video to accompany it. Continuing on with his innovative sound is ‘Bounce It’ on the flip side with high-energy danceability, accompanied by its entertaining electronic vocals. Cyantific first release of 2011 is setting the standards for an extremely big year, watch out for more releases coming soon as well as DJ sets around the globe.

DETAIL004 – Lynx – Chess Funk / The Foundry – 12″ Vinyl
Detail 004 is a solo venture from label boss Lynx, showing the more dj/ club orientated sound of Detail Recordings. The A side,Chess Funk, has been on the circuit for sometime being supported by Fabio (Radio 1), Marcus Intalex, Calibre, Bailey (1Xtra), Spy, Artificial Intelligence and many more, plus is featured on Marky’s forthcoming Fabric Live Cd. The track has all the suspense of Bob Jame’s music or a score from a Bond Movie, with rising crescendos and brass stabs that also wouldn’t sound out of place in Steve Mcqueens Bullit. The Foundry takes a much slower brooding approach, still with a cinematic feel using ethnic vibes in the intro, dropping into a devastatingly sluggish beat and bass combo that swamps any club with huge, warm, yet slightly unnerving bass.

New Bass Music releases

HJP53 – Shackleton – Fireworks – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Two brilliant new Shackletons, with triumphant remixes by T++ and Baron Mordant. In Fireworks, the detonations are internalized, swallowed like the Establishment tongue at the start: the mood is malevolent, not celebratory. Synth shrapnel criss-crosses a stately, choral progression, before ticking hi-hats and plate-shifting bass count-down the percussion pressure-drop. Galloping kicks and clopping tabla tussle with each other, in and out of alignment: the kind of ghosted Middle Eastern instrumentation introduced by the Skull Disco classic Hamas Rule, seeping through. Soundsystem psychodrama in inimitable Shackleton style. For T++, Shackleton’s music seems a perfect foil, its fleshy, ultra-vivid drum constructions ripe for demolition and rebuild; and sure enough this mix enacts a kind of rhythmic necromancy, its brittle, emaciated breakbeats shunting forward nastily, ravenously. (Incidentally, perhaps, there is a titular invocation of a much earlier T++ incarnation, buried in the late-90s: the Aussen Vor EP, by Dynamo.) Likewise, Undeadman raises Deadman. Midi signals from the original were sent to synths; sounds and effects were recorded separately, and rearranged; new ideas came through. The sound-world is enriched, more three-dimensional; the arrangement is looser, more spry, with neat additions and elaborations, notably an impish minor-key piano flourish. Ravishing in its own right, Undeadman is a fascinating indication of where Shackleton’s work may go next. Mordant Music — whose eponymous label first introduced Shackleton — re-fashions it into a bona fide epic. The side evolves from scouring, bad-trip kosmische into an out-and-out dance wrecker, with a massive punky-reggae-party bassline astride walls of saw-toothed synth noise. Designed by Will Bankhead, the sleeve dazzlingly layers different Zeke Clough artworks, in spot UV varnish.

SFS003 – Distal & HxdB / Mayhem & Distal – Typewriter Tune VIP / Frozen Barnacles – 12″ Vinyl
Surefire Sound’s third release features three up-and-coming producers from two points on the map: Distal and Mayhem hailing from Atlanta, Georgia and HxdB from Vancouver, Canada.Collaborating together, this trio brings together a pair of innovative tracks that exemplify the exciting future of dubstep and bass music in 2011. Leading off the release is Michael Rathbun a.k.a. Distal, a rising star in the next wave of bass music producers and founding member of Atlanta Dubstep, a collective that has been introducing dubstep’s top artists to the southeast United States since 2007. Through their events and newly founded label Embassy Recordings, Distal has established his own dynamic that integrates dubstep with Chicago’s juke sounds, and has started to make quite an impression on the global scene with a release on Soul Jazz’s Future Bass compilation, as well as Amsterdam’s Tube 10 Recordings, among others. Collaborating with Distal on the A side is Severine Erickson, a.k.a. HxdB (short for Hexadecibel). Channeling his creative energies from his own pocket of North America, HxdB has been a hardworking DJ, producer, and promoter of the more sophisticated angles of bass music. With several 12” releases to his name on labels such as Mindset and Echodub, and plenty more coming in the new year, he is ready to make his mark on this release alongside Distal with “Typewriter Tune”. Its’ potent assault of shuffling beats and funk-infused pitchwarped synths was so well-received by their DJ mates that they amped up the energy into a VIP version with support from the likes of Bok Bok (Night Slugs, London), Dave Q (Dub War, NYC), Sepalcure (Hotflush), and many more. Working with Distal on the flipside is Anthony Rotella a.k.a. Mayhem, a long-time stalwart of the Atlanta scene coming from notable acclaim in the drum & bass arena. With recent dubstep releases on San Francisco’s Argon Records and Amsterdam’s Subway Recordings, Mayhem is clearly a producer with multiple talents. On “Frozen Barnacles”, they deliver a high-energy, yet heady half-stepper with warm filtered synths and dub-wise horns.

SUBWAY015 – DJ Madd – When I First Met You EP – 12″ Vinyl
Dj Madd has been a known face within the dubstep scene for while now.. his releases on Blackbox, War, Boka, Tube10 have been getting massive support.. But his subway debut is probably his best work yet! “When I First Met You” is the epic cut here.. massive basslines & euphoric strings have dubbed this DJ Madd’s best outing yet.. Speaking about rattling.. “Babylon” takes that to the next level.. ever played on a big rig and getting a massage at the same time? no? well but on babylon and feel everything tremble.. This one is just one of those records that lets you know what dubstep was all about from the beginning.. RATTLIN BIZ!

HJP52 – Shackleton – Deadman – 12″ Vinyl
Sam Shackleton stalks deeper into the sub-loaded unknown, with two Valentine’s Day releases for Honest Jon’s, loaded with spectacular remixes by Kevin Martin, T++ and Baron Mordant, all stunningly mastered by Rashad Becker, and presented with startling artwork by Zeke Clough. Retrieved from his celebrated Fabric mix-CD, Deadman is signature Shackleton, turning paradox and paranoia into dancefloor fire. It comes straight at you: rolling, dread techno of breathtaking heat and humidity, spurred by hectoring congas and thick-set subs, amidst a teeming soundscape of drones, field recordings and oblique vocal textures, like missed messages and garbled warnings. Nimble yet drop-forge-heavy, sensuous yet punitive, wide-open yet occluded, on the move yet unnervingly rooted. Kevin Martin adopts his King Midas Sound guise for an expansive remix which reveals his lineage in noise, industrial and isolationist ambient. He fillets and cools Shackleton’s production, building a corona of crackle, with stirring strings. Hitomi’s singing taps the melancholy latent in the mischief and menace of the original. A muffled bass and tripping syncopation nods to Rhythm & Sound — but Death Dub is its own beast, fully realized, daring and affecting.

New Bass Music Promos

DP048 – D1 Ft. Jenna G – Flood Of Emotions / Bleeps To Broadway – 12″ Vinyl
D1 has once again come up with the goods, and delivered two brilliant old skool-influenced dancefloor tracks. ‘Flood Of Emotions’ featuring renowned vocalist Jenna G, showcases D1’s trademark melodic sensibility, while maintaining the tough drums and pure bass pressure that makes UK bass music so exciting and impactful. Driven by a classic hardcore break, the track penetrates right through you while the uplifting melody, complimented by Jenna’s vocals, washes over you beautifully. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ takes similar rave influences, this time moulding them around tough, stripped down drums and futuristic bleeps. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ is also accompanied by the 130 mix, which opens up the track, slowing the groove down and giving it some extra room to breathe. D1 was one of the earliest proponents of the emerging dubstep sound, and has remained one of the scene’s most creative and exciting producers ever since. Responsible for a number of seminal dubstep tracks, he has been a long-time Dub Police affiliate and has had support from all of the biggest players in the scene, also releasing tracks on esteemed labels like Tempa, Soulja and Dub Files. He continues to push his sound forward and evolve with each and every release, and never fails to surprise! Judging on the pure quality of these tracks, 2011 is set to be a big year for D1…

DRUNK021 – Kahn – Like We Used To / Helter Skelter – 12″ Vinyl
New year, New blood. Kahn steps forward from the shadows of the Bristol underground to deliver a killer double A side debut 12” release for Punch Drunk Records. The immediacy of Kahn’s brand of electrostatic synths and stirring, moody grooves are sure to rapidly ascend his profile in 2011. ‘Like We Used To’ strikingly layers a neck snapping rhythm with mutated soulful vocals, whilst ‘Helter Skelter’ brings enough irresistible bump and flex to move any dancefloor. Kahn’s basslines may eminate from Bristol, but prepare to feel the resonance worldwide. Bristol’s Punch Drunk label recently reached it’s landmark 20th 12” release and was voted #18 in Resident Advisor magazine’s Best Labels of 2010 poll.

BUILD005 – Baobinga & Hyetal – Anything For Now / Trouble – 12″ Vinyl
We kick off 2011 with the latest collaborative plate of Bristol-based Build badness – label boss Baobinga cooking up two ‘what-do-you-call-it’ tracks with one of 2010s breakthrough producers, the man they call Hyetal. Starting 2010 with a huge Punch Drunk release alongside Shortstuff, Hyetal further refined his sound through collaborations with Peverelist, and the massive Prince-tastic anthem ‘Phoenix’ on Orca – which can be found sitting proudly at number 36 in FACT Magazine’s ‘Tracks Of The Year’ run-down. With some big releases due in 2011, and more Velour beats (with Julio Bashmore) on the way, we’re very excited to have him involved in a Build release. The A side here, ‘Anything For Now’, is a perfect example of when collaborations work perfectly – and finished every set of Ginz’s recent US tour to rapturous response. Through the course of an ever-evolving arrangement, tough dancefloor drums drive epic synth lines and melodies forward to a point of ecstatic release, all tied together with powerful sub-bass and a staggering level of detail. Meanwhile, the AA, ‘Trouble’, could almost be dancehall from alpha-centuri, as again, a cornucopia of glistening chords, synthetic steel drums and swaggering, swinging drums proper the dancefloor through spiky, bruising bass-weight punches. As a staple of both producers’ sets, ‘Trouble’ has been shown to do the business without ever resorting to cliche.

PSQ005 – Furesshu – Lucid / Lifted (Shifted Remix) / All I Want – 12″ Vinyl
PSQ005 is Furesshu’s follow up 12 inch release to last year’s trio of tracks (PSQ002) that garnered attention from Ben Klock, Sigha and Marcel Dettmann, who continues to play out his music regularly. Furesshu’s bleak and powerful remix of L-OW (PSQ003) has been criminally under appreciated, and now his second 12 inch on Project Squared (PSQ005) will showcase a more House influenced, but still Techno at its core, sound with ‘Lucid’ and ‘All I Want’. Both tunes work around short vocal snippets, employing them to melodic, repetitive effect within a sparse but subtly evolving soundstage. Providing a remix of ‘Lucid’, Shifted converts the House tinged original into straight up, heavy hitting Techno, with relentless kick drum, melodic stabs and the occasional clap. Shifted has made a big impact with his debut 12″ on Mote Evolver and he has a stack of 12s lined up for 2011 on some very solid labels. Similarly, with a forthcoming release on the new Commune label in early 2011 and more to follow, this is going to be a big year for Furesshu.

With a who’s who of elite artists including Dieselboy, Excision, Datsik, Vaski, Antiserum, and 6Blocc supporting their tunes, the small-town Oregon trio is quickly becoming a major player in the global dubstep scene. Vicious Audio begins its assault with a massive single by Triage. Two big tunes carved with the signature sound that has brought the group to the front lines of battle. Drawing inspiration from their drum and bass roots, ‘Comorbid’ is a nice roller stabbing you with snares and punching you with bass. If you survive this, the evil flip side ‘Play Dead’ will slap you around with some heavy, twisted, subsonic madness.

Since the release of his debut “Hyph Mngo” that swept the global dance music world in 2009, British producer Peter O’Grady (aka Orbison) makes his return on Hotflush Recordings as Joy O in 2011.

These two productions take a more straightforward approach, toeing along the lines of classic house music, infused with this talented producer’s own signature style, weaving rolling acidic basslines in “Wade In” and uplifting melodies in “Jels” and over shuffling Roland drums and blissful atmospherics.

Marcus Intalex’s ’21′ Album is incoming….

Marcus Intalex’s ’21′ Album is incoming….

Posted 16 February 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

For over two decades, no one had pushed the legacy of bass culture like the stalwart for the deeper end of the spectrum, Marcus Intalex. And yet, despite his storied back catalog of scene-defining releases, genre-crossing remixes, and even a revolutionary LP with M.I.S.T. and calibre (as Mist:ical), the music world has never been graced with a solo album from the innovator himself. Until now, 21 years in.

Since 1990, whether DJing, promoting events (including his Soul:ution nights), radio shows, working in record shops, or running his two historic record labels, Marcus Intalex has always had his hand in music, working his way from being the assistant sweeping the back room of vinyl shops, to being the DJ in front of 50,000 people. Since bright beginnings DJing in Manchester’s underground, and his incomparable first productions with ST Files, even from the outset there was something about Intalex that refused to fit in a comfortable box. It’s a notion that’s followed his every move as a bold A&R visionary, being the first label to sign genre-challengers such as Martyn, Instra:mental and Calibre. Perhaps it can all be traced back to his early days in Manchester, when electronic music was too new to even have boxes or set genres.

Marcus Intalex

In the 80′s, I was always into synth bands, I always liked the idea of synthesized music. When I started DJing, it was just at the start of the Chicago and Detroit sound. That was really my first love of electronic music, and I caught it at the right time. It was at the beginning, there was a buzz, and then obviously the whole rave scene developed. Seeing all of that happen, and going out to the Hacienda for the first time and hearing the DJs play this music that I’d never heard before…it was such an amazing introduction to it, I never lost the love for it.”

Forever bearing a strong alliance with techno, and coming from an upbringing when music defied descroptors, it seems only natural that now, fast forwarding to the present, Intalex would be drawn to the current sounds rumbling the bass circuit (the sounds that, likewise, fall into haphazardly constructed genres like “post-dubstep” or “future bass”). It also comes as vey little suprise that his productions would sway away from conformity, as seen in his most recent productions. His downtempo tracks are currently being championed by the beatseekers of the scene, such as Radio 1′s Benji B and Eglo’s Alexander Nut, Swamp 81′s leader Loefah, 3024 boss Martyn, Scuba, Oneman and 2562.

I’ve found alot of the new sounds are more me than anything, really. It’s influenced by everything I’ve been into for the 21 years, everything I’ve believed in – Techno, the earlier sounds of Drum & Bass, and it’s experimental. The balance in power shifted – not away from Drum & Bass, but almost away from commercial dance music. It’s a 130-140BPM tempo, and that’s all it is: a tempo; it’s an open script otherwise. It’s brilliant.

To Me, Drum & Bass is something that alot of people have ridden on success-wise, and now people have to work a little bit harder because the spotlight is elsewhere. And they are doing exactly that. There seems to be alot of innovative Drum & Bass music coming from alot of different angles and different parts of the world. It’s opened up a new appreciation for the subtelty in D&B. The deeper side has gotten more interesting than ever.

With his first long player, ’21′ is rightly trying to go its own way, regardless of expectation or reaction, just as Intalex has always done as an artist. The result is a wildly unpredictable, yet entirely cohesive, view of where Marcus Intalex stands now, after over 2 decades of watching cycles come and go, and sounds shift and mutate.

I do feel a tinge of regret for not doing this sooner, but I’ve never been one to do something just because it’s what you’re supposed to do. It’s not as though the whole 21 years has been building up to this moment, where I’ve been working to create a tour de force. It just so happens that right now, I’m making some music that I’m happy with; I’m enjoying the studio more than ever before.

The album’s not necessarily crying out to be noticed, and I haven’t done it with that in mind – It’s quite an introspective things, actually. I’ve had a great 21 years. Being in the business for so long, you would normally expect to feel like you’re entering the twilight of your careerm but really and truly I feel more ready for the future than I have ever felt before.

SOM011 – Black Sun Empire, State Of Mind & Bulletproof / NC-17, Telekinesis feat KC – Roulette / Micronaps – 12″ Vinyl
SOM 011: State of Mind, Black Sun Empire and Bulletproof – Roulette – State of Mind and Black Sun Empire are back on SOM wax. This time around Bulletproof gets in on the action, and the result: the mighty Roulette. Roulette is unashamedly heavy but at the same time super smooth, and it has been doing the damage all over the world in the sets of some of the scene’s biggest names. NC-17, Telekinesis feat KC – On the other side Micronaps is just as crisp. Labels from all walks including Virus, BSE and C4C were literally begging for this tune but somehow SOM got ahold of it. What more is there to say than this tune absolutely smacks it: A real underground favorite. Here is what some fans have to say about this great 12 on soundcloud: ”This is amazing, must own this”. ”Flawless production! It sounds super open and clean, couldnt have been better!” ”There should be a download button about here…” ”Thats a hell of a 12 inch”

DMND001 – BTK – Things I Do / Things I Do (Spectrasoul Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Brazil has turned out some of the world’s greatest D&B ever since DJ Marky was discovered by Bryan G and his V Recordings camp. From Marky XRS and Patife to one of Brazil’s other great D&B talents, BTK, you know that you’re always getting quality music with something special injected into it. Drawing from his love of Metalheadz and classic drum & bass, BTK lends ‘Things I Do’ a nostalgic feel that’s undoubtedly going to get dancefloors fired up, but has a refinement and class that comes with maturity. Shogun warriors Spectrasoul step up for remix duty on the flip, taking BTK’s original and smoothing it out to its very barest elements. It’s a mystery how Spectrasoul manage to make a few minimal parts fit and move together effortlessly, but this remix is further proof that they’re on top of their game. This is the first release of many from the brand new Swiss label Demand Records. To throw in a junglist cliche – don’t sleep! Support from DJ Lee, John B, Simon Bassline Smith, Nicky Blackmarket, Flight, Storm, to name a few..

SHB010 – Panic Girl – Panic Girl Remixes – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. For over six years, shadybrain is forcing innovation in Drum and Bass. With it’s 10th vinyl this is made clear more than ever. ‘The Panic Girl Remixes’ join various high profile artists who have never been combined on a release before: dBridge, Phace, Duo Infernale, Skyence, as well as newcomer Sone. The base for all their remixes was Panic Girl’s ‘Burn And Rise EP’, a trip-hop release which was published on shadybrain in early 2010. Phace gets the EP going with his trademark machine-funk sound twisting up the title track ‘Burn And Rise’, while Duo Infernale burn a deep but dancefloor oriented fireworks of Panic Girl’s ‘Hide And Seek’. dBridge himself then extracts the essence of ‘Blue Lights’, taking the listener to a place dark as eternal night. The release is completed by two non Drum and Bass tunes by Skyence and Sone, the first one delivering finest electronica with a wonky groove, while Sone is unleashing a monster of mashed up Dubstep. WARM018 – Seba – Vanity / Nostalgia – 12″ Vinyl
Not many producers in drum & bass or music in general can have the sort of career where every piece of music that comes out of their studio is pure excellence. Sebastian Ahrenberg is one of the few musicians that fits easily into the category of excellence. This is his fourth release with Warm Communications and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results! A. VANITY – This is a proper bass workout from the man. Things kick off with super snappy breaks with amazing effects layered on top! Dark atmospheres creep in giving the tune amazing tension leading into what the tune is all about….bass! Distorted, thunderous bass leads the tune into some balanced keys giving the tune that perfect balance of rough and smooth Seba is known for! AA. NOSTALGIA – If you’re a fan of Seba’s uplifting, spine-tingling pieces…then this tune is for you! A solid, rolling break leading into uplifting synths and a guitar-like melody while the pulsating bassline will give any soundsystem a run for it’s money! GEN175005 – Switch Technique – Did / Exo – 12″ Vinyl
Switch Technique is the first artist to get a solo release on The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. So, what does this mean? It means that he has pulled off that which only very few can manage: he mixed hardcore kickdrums and drum & bass snares into what has become known as crossbreed.. and he made it sound good. DID is a deep dive into the mind of a psychopath, continuously hammered by gutwrenching kickdrum one hundred and seventy-five times per minute. EXO on the flip strips the crossbreed sound down to its bare exoskeleton. Go on, put on the exoskeleton and see for yourself!

DISF012 – Phaeleh – Falling – 12″ Vinyl
‘Falling’ Disfigured Dubz kick off the New Year with this single by Bristolian producer Phaeleh, hot off the back of his debut album ‘Fallen Light’. With this offering, he sticks very much to his trademark style. An intricate and ever progressing drum track provides the spine for the thought provoking cloudy atmospheres, glittering melodies and moody chords. He somehow manages to catch a similar vibe to early hardcore and acid house with its feeling of optimism and a new found freedom. Vocal snippets of ‘Life is so crazy ‘ and ‘let you go’ give the track a sense of meaning and compliment the musical elements perfectly. ‘Falling (Kulture Remix)’ On the flipside we have a remix by fellow Disfigured Dubz artist Kulture. He’s obviously picked up on the hardcore vibe and pushed it even further in that direction by adding an amen which automatically makes it sound like a lost hit from the early 90s. Beefing up the bass line and more vocal processing turns the original calm inducing track into an absolute dance floor destroyer but without over complicating it. An interesting insight into how dubstep could be taking dance music full circle.

BOKA033 – Skinnz – Keep It Gutta / Euphorbia – 12″ Vinyl
12” YELLOW VINYL – Ltd to 500 Copies Worldwide. Bristol based Skinnz unleashes his debut solo release after more than 5 years in the game! His productions date back to an appearance on a Destructive Recordings compilation back in 2005 alongside the likes of Skream, Toastyboy, Distance and Vex’d. More recently his collabs with I.D have seen releases on labels such as Pinch’s Earwax and Double Science. “Keep It Gutta” features soaring synthetic soul chords, like Joker’s ‘purple wow’ sound with aggro elements sublimated into a crisp urban elegance. “Euphorbia” strays into Martyn/Joy Orbison territory, its fizzing drone chords and soul vocal samples compressed around a bassier but Grime-inclined beat to breathless effect! Currently receiving heavy Radio1 / 1Xtra support from Mistajam and Ras Kwame, along with Mary Anne Hobbs, 16bit, Kito, Pinch, Mensah, I.D, Baobinga, Akira Kiteshi, Jayglo & more!

Hackman surrenders his last single before his album drops. Moving from his technicolour funky / grime hybrid of his first PTN excursion, ‘Made Up My Mind’ & ‘BAM BAM’ descends into solid house beats and hefty basslines. Look out for his forthcoming album on PTN in 2011.

PL012 – The Subdivision / 501 / HLZ – Open Your Eyes EP – 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision return home to Paradise Lost with the Open Your Eyes EP: epic vibes, hypnotic bass work, and complex programming manifest themselves as what might be considered their best work to date, and surely a production which defines their unique style for building cinematic tracks of epic proportions. For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ (worked for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings) was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping.

TEC047 – Illum Sphere – Dreamstealin – 12″ Vinyl
Manchester’s Illum Sphere makes his debut for Tectonic, the young producer unleashing his finest work to date with two killer cuts that demonstrate a wealth of musical influences while setting new directions and expectations for the post-dubstep generation to look towards. It’s a fresh start to the year and a taste of the way Tectonic is moving in 2011. The lead cut is ‘Dreamstealin’, a powerful, twisted track that opens with a dramatic, tense intro – a soundtrack to enormous alien machinery grinding into action. A demonic cello forms the backbone to the piece, warped into a cybernetic frenzy and sounding like nothing you’ve heard before, scrambling into a bit-crushed radio frequency sweep at the drop. Then, in comes the frantic drum pattern – high energy movements in a heavily swung style, with hints of J Dilla or Flying Lotus as the tune builds up again by means of a demented, brooding melody. Eventually it peaks and slips into a more relaxed, funked up vibe, easing down from tense build. Dark energy for the leftfield dancefloor at its finest. Flip to ‘Blood Music’, an equally dreamy affair, though less tense and foreboding. Silky melodic lines run over heavily grooved but rolling beats with a friendly nod to the sound of Burial with its post-club come-down “melt in ecstasy” vibe. Finally, an excellent remix of ‘Blood Music’ by friend and fellow Mancunian Indigo pushes into a ghostly new incarnation with swooping bass and more broken, fragile beats.

New Bass Music Promos

ROTTUN007 – Downlink – Biohazard / Zombie Apocolypse – 12″ Vinyl
Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep. With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. His first two releases charted at #1 on several popular online music stores and soon he found his way onto Rottun Recordings which seemed a suiting place for his music. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from the likes of Nero, Excision, Datsik, Rusko, Dieselboy, Crookers and many more. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience…

KAP006 – L-Wiz – Straitjacket / 4.42 OZ – 12″ Vinyl
Kapsize kick starts 2011 with 2 fresh cuts from a new label artist: L-Wiz. While L-Wiz is new to Kapsize, the Swedish duo are in no way new to the dubstep scene – drawing attention with killer tracks like ‘Girl From Codeine City’ and the classic ‘Girlfriend’, the production pair have been making high quality dubstep tracks since the early 2004-5 days, even launching the first ever release on Dub Police! It is with pleasure that we announce ‘Straitjacket’ and ’4.42 Oz’ find a home on Kapsize! Keeping in the spirit of Joker’s own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output – pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. ‘Straitjacket’ is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the ‘purple’ sound we all know and love at Kapsize – while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Flip for the equally melodic ’4.42 Oz’ which takes a more relaxed approach in vibe, taking things in a futuristic direction while simultaneously referencing the past. Beautifully produced elegant music that you will keep coming back to. DJ support from everyone from Plastician to 2562 as well as of course being a main staple in Joker’s own sets last year.

SPEAKS004 – Emvee / Graphics – Future Runnings EP – 12″ Vinyl
The power of youth is being felt all around the world right now, as dictators fall and governments wobble in the face of youngsters fighting against apparently dark futures. Here, Shifting Peaks harnesses some of that energy for a split 12” double header from two of the most promising young producers around. We’d like to think 18 year old South Londoner Alfie Macgibbon aka Graphics has been out there sticking it to The Man whilst jumping around to POW! and keeping the Old Bill on their toes. But we don’t hear much from him tbh, and from the depth and quality of these two future-steppers,’ Blue Top’ and ‘Brian Said to Me’, we reckon he’s been hidden away, quietly building his own vision of the future while real life goes on elsewhere. Birminghams’ Emvee’s is of an age where he doesn’t need to worry about the Tory Millionaire clubs further education plans, having established himself way back in the heady days of 2009 with his landmark ‘Glitch Dub’ on NMBRS. Now he unleashes a tropical banger in the shape of the percussive floor shaker ‘Windrush’ and a driving, Funky-tech bumper ‘Strength’. Two young producers, 4 tracks, a world to win. Keep the fires burning brother and sisters.

HRMN014 – Pavan – Holy Volt – 12″ Vinyl
You’re about to experience the first long-playing album of Pavan, the originator of Skweee-music. Skweee, also known as the synthetic Scandinavian funk, is a worldwide phenomena hailing originally from the frosty alleys of Stockholm and Helsinki. The raw, unpolished electronic funk tracks of this album were recorded in 2003-2006, when the term itself didn’t yet exist. Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue  synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Take a trip through the electro ragga of  ‘War’ and ‘Buttons’ and simmer down with the trippy krautness of ’1000 Years’. In this world overpopulated by soulless throwaway electronic music it’s very rare and touching to hear something as pure and honest as ‘Holy Volt’.

CIV017 – Reso – Valken EP / War Machine – 12″ Vinyl
Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow. Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy. Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.

New D&B CD

MJAZZLP04 – Various – The Modernists 2 CD – CD
The CD album is strictly limited to 100 hand finished copies, so certainly something for the collectors. Tony Justice’s MJazz label has come good with the second instalment on it’s limited CD series. “The Modernists 2” brings together an international selection of new skool artists laced together with techno and electronic influences… The project boasts several producers who’s names are practically buzz words in contemporary deep drum & bass. “Reklas” by Berlin’s Felix K is a personal favorite of ours, incorporating a relentless white noise-esque snare with deep sub bass and tense stabs. Also deserving a special metion is relative newcomer Dominick Ridgeway’s “My Reflection”, minimal by definition, subtle and cinematic by character. Justice & Metro’s “Sounds Like Something” takes the listener firmly away from the dancefloor and straight into the future dystopia of a city landscape that would be at home in Bladerunner, stripping away the beats and focussing on some seriously synthed out keys and pads.

CF044 – Quadrant – Dermaphoria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. Some producers are just so underrated that it makes you sick. Quadrant is a formation that’s been around since 2005 and has released tracks on prestigious labels like Renegade Hardware, Citrus, Fokuz to name a few. The quality of their output is extraordinarily crisp and original that it’s hard not to notice them, this Dermaphoria EP is exactly that. And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’ State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one. Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain. Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. When this one hits standing still is not an option, the bass line will sweep you of your feet in no time and shoot you into the Dermaphoria Quadrant. 0 Gravity beats and sweeps are coming at you at all sides so you are warned!

RDR002 – Shameboy / Buscemi – Strobot – NETSKY rmx / Seaside – KG rmx – 12″ Vinyl
Murdock’s Radar Records launches an entirely new project, backed by some of the biggest names in drum&bass. Remixing a gang of classic Belgian non-dnb tracks by the likes of T99, Sound of Stereo, The Subs, Outlander and many more, they kick off the series with massive drum&bass reworks by none other than Netsky and KG. Drum & Bass’ new poster boy / boy wonder Netsky steps to the plate with the awesomeness that is his version of Shameboy’s classic electro banger ‘Strobot’, which was the first tune in his BBC Radio1 Essential Mix and has had a lot of exposure worldwide, as his Mix was voted 3rd best Essential Mix of the year 2010! The track has had spins by Andy C, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked and many more. KG ripped up Buscemi’s laidback house classic ‘Seaside’ and turned it into a dancefloor stomper. Opening with funky licks and classic breaks, he quickly rolls into a big jump-up monster, while still adding some vocals and rhodes piano for good measure. This one is being caned by Bassline Smith, Hamilton and Zen, to name just a few. Next up in the Radar Remixes series are contributions by Nymfo, Blame, Crystal Clear, Break, Marky & SPY and many more, so keep your eyes and ears pealed!

DOT004 – Duffstep – Getting to Sirius – CD
Limited edition gapless audio CD. Until now Duffstep has been hidden in the seedy undergrowth of London always disguised, clandestine, covert, forever plotting his imminent escape. This bid for freedom then is called ‘Getting to Sirius’. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, in Ancient Greek times Sirius was said to mark the beginning of summer, where women became aroused and men became weak. The gods screamed for glory and the crowd screamed one more. It’s a migration then from early morning blissful sweeps and sonic washes. It is the soul of rave, it is it’s long dead cousin come back to haunt it. It is the sound rave makes when it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere. It isn’t a simple re-working of what has been showcased in recent live outings, it is more contemplative; unlike his more recent outings it is less aimed at the dance-floor and is instead a more, down-tempo, relaxed affair. Aside from travelling to Sirius on weekends, Duffstep can also be found sharing a stage with some of the biggest names in electronic music, Flying Lotus, Pinch, Martyn, Commix, Ramadanman, Pariah and Kode 9 to name a few. As well as teaming up alongside Rebel Overlay one of the VJ scenes brightest assets, Duffstep has begun touring a massive live show that is set to be unveiled from Timbuktu to Teignmouth. Accompanying the debut LP will be 3 remix EP’s straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes split across both digital and vinyl include re-tellings from FaltyDL, Elliphino and Young Montana? On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold, Loose fit, Social Monster and Duffstep’s Thursday night drag act alter-ego Duff Disco taking things to house and disco dancefloors. With original material, remix EPs, a debut album and an ever growing touring schedule, Duffstep is going to be hard to ignore in 2011.

DISF011 – Instra:mental / Von D & Riskotheque – Voyeur / Like A Bird – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Skream’s label rounds of 2010 with a classic release. Its not often a gem like this comes along and its no surprise that fellow production collaborator Skream picked it up for his Disfigured Dubz imprint. Having been a regular floor filler over the past year within the emerging techno x dubstep scene, ‘Voyeur’ has been in high demand and finally sees the light of day to many peoples delight. It was one of Instra:mentals first dabbles with the 4/4 structure but has the maturity and qualities of a rediscovered 90s classic. Lazy robo beats set the tone for a slurred vocal that sounds like a drunken tourist in a red light district. At the same time, spacey atmospheres build in the background until they reach a peak and fade away into screaming stabs that get the crowd going mental. Expect to hear this for many years to come and could possibly reach classic status. Next up we have the AA side from upcoming artists Von D and Riskotheque. With their jazz/soul fueled take on Dubstep they’re building their own little niche within the scene and are sure to shine this year. ‘Like a bird’ mixes old skool vocal snippets, lurching fizzy mids and Detroit style stabs to create this monster that Skream and his fellow Djs have been rinsing to full effect over the last couple of months. A perfect balance of musical prowess and heavyweight beats and bass, this tune covers all angles nicely.

NONPLUSLP002PART1 – LOL – LOL Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

PIPS014 – Orphan101 – Propa / Disemble – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips is proud to present another original new talent from the Bristol bass underground – Orphan101. Having cut his teeth on Bristol pirate radio with Headhunter aka Addison Groove, Orphan101 surfaced earlier this year with some promising releases on Saigon and his own Decarhythm label, one of several new labels in Bristol (along with If Symptoms Persist, Idle Hands, & Subdepth) to be pushing a varied and seemingly boundary less take on bass music. A residency at the Apple Pips nights in Bristol allowed him to road test his beats and it’s here that Appleblim heard the awesome rolling 2-step-meets-Carl Craig-in-a-Bristol-soundclash track that is ‘Propa’. With skippy garage beats, a bleeped out intro, and the deepest sub-bass this side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, you need to hear this track on a system. It hurts! On the flip ‘Disemble’ takes us on a journey through his vision of minimal techno, in a dubstep context, with scratchy percussion rubbing up against twisted Ed & Optical ‘Wormhole’ era bass spasms. Having just come from playing at Fabric for Apple Pips takeover, things are looking great in 2011 for Orphan101. Early DJ/Radio support already coming from Mark Pritchard (Warp/Harmonic 313/Afrika Hi Tech), Instra:mental (Non-plus/Swamp81), Addison Groove, 2562 (Tectonic), Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina (Tresor) & more

DOT003 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #1 – 12″ Vinyl
Like the joining of ancient clans or the marriage of Marie Antoinette to Louis of France the joining of the Duff brothers is something of a historical milestone. Since birth the Duff’s have gone their separate ways, one getting down on the worlds hipper dancefloors, hips-awiggling, head thrown back in rapture and all under a spinning disco ball. The other brother the troubled teen, hood up, eyes down, bass rumbling, one time selecta. Imagine then two estranged brothers, born from the same seed living awkwardly side by side, never entirely comfortable in each other’s company finally uniting on one massive inbred slab of sonic harmony. If you can imagine that slightly cack-handed analogy then that is pretty much what you get here. After a year of huge edits and original material Duff Disco has finally gone and had a fiddle with his brother? Both taken from the forthcoming Duffstep album ‘Getting To Sirius’, ‘Your Touch’ and ‘Backseat’ are original Duffstep tracks given a cosmic make over by Duff Disco. They are proper modern disco music that sits just the right side of funky, without conjuring images of fluffy boots and spiky hair, white shirts and fake tan. Whilst Backseat is the more euphoric of the two Your Touch is more moody than an emo teenager watching Twighlight. Both obviously Duff Disco but somehow keeping the family together as Duffstep’s finger prints are all over these too.

The second release on Oneman’s 502 Recordings will be from French producer Jay Weed. The Lyon-based producer who also has a 12″ waiting to be put out by Grizzly, the label Sinden founded. As Sinden said he is making the music that we love on the show, risk taking, genre defying, musical and weird! He’s carving out his own mutant house sound – so refreshing.

SPEAKS003 – Sekta – Liquid Tek EP – 12″ Vinyl
No doubt looking for somewhere with a bit of political stability and a brighter economic future, 24 year old Polish producer Jan Dudzik aka Sekta recently joined many of his compatriots by leaving London and farking off back to his native Warsaw. Luckily, he left us a bottle of the finest vodka to remember him by, and a four track EP of stepping rhythms, fat bass and dubby atmospherics to help wash it down. Lead track ‘Liquid Tek’combines deep pads, pulsing subs, metallic riffs and broken beats into a floor friendly, but contemplative post dubstepper. Similar elements are combined in “ I Need’ , with a sliver of vocal adding an extra layer to the musical equation. ‘Hakka Riddim’ takes things a bit heavier, coiling beefy synth stabs around it’s insistent rhythms , and employing a spacey string interlude to break things up along the way. Closing track ‘Deep in the Woods’ takes the trace of D n B textures that run through the EP and lets loose, with full on, chopped up Amen breaks accompanying futuristic pads, robo-synths and occasional flourishes of cinematic strings that hint of Easter European nostalgia.

New Bass Music Promos

NOMIC005 – They Live – Pure Palms / Don’t Know What To Say – 12″ Vinyl
The first release for Consequence and Joe Seven’s new alias ‘They Live’ is on dBridge & Instra:mental’s Autonomic label. Creeping in with a slightly haunting melody and sparse drums, ‘Pure Palms’ starts off with little indication of where the track might lead; it feels as though it could go in any direction. As it slowly builds, the warmth and weight – and deep-set rhythms – that Consequence is known for begin settling, and open up to an evocative, widescreen track of immense beauty. They Live’s musicality comes through strong throughout the detailed turnings of the downtempo masterpiece, with immersive low-end fills and intricate percussion that take all headphones hostage. ‘Don’t Know What To Say’ brings a darker edge, with crackling sound effects and an ominous, spine-chilling bassline that creates intense and intriguing dynamics. As a solemn melody builds, once again They Live bring a cinematic feel to the dense, ever-growing atmosphere. Brooding with textured sounds, skyscraping synths and head-nodding beats, the mesmerizing track shows huge promise of what’s to come from the powerful duo.

DP049 – KGB – Ghetto Blasta 2010 / Hands Up – 12″ Vinyl
Estonian duo KGB step up for their debut release on Dub Police and they certainly aren’t pulling any punches. The production partnership hit you with two cuts of pure dance floor energy and impact that display their versatility and uncanny knowledge of how to get a crowd going. If you don’t know about KGB, you better get to know, as they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the rising stars in underground dance music. With plenty of tricks up their sleeves, there will be no stopping them in 2011! ‘Ghetto Blaster 2010’ draws upon different elements of underground bass music and melds them together in to something entirely unique and undeniably infectious. Taking the growling midrange bass-weight of dubstep and wiring it to a militant UK Funky drum march, KGB give the track an unstoppable momentum and punishing impact that is impossible to fight against – With an artillery that includes fire like this, it is no wonder they are quickly paving their path to the top. On the flipside, KGB deliver something very different. Pinned down by the tough half-step drum pattern, ‘Hands Up’ is all about the maniacal intertwining bass lines. When this track drops there is no denying its fierce, in-your-face power.

RS1006RMX – Model 500 – OFI (Space Dimension Controller & Bullion Remxes) – 12″ Vinyl
Model 500 returned triumphantly to R&S in 2010, with their first release for the label in eleven years, and the first with the new line up of Juan Atkins, Mike Banks and Mark Taylor. They found themselves label mates with some of the finest young electronic producers working in music today, and back on a rejuvenated label that was making the top ten labels of the year lists from the likes of Fact, XLR8R, RA, Juno and Bleep. It makes total sense that the lead track from the OFI ep is handed over to two amazing young producers to reinterpret it in their own unique ways. Bullion made his name with the internet sensation Songs In The Key Of Dee release which blended The Beach Boys and Dilla into a hip hop masterpiece. Recently he’s released the You Drive Me To Plastic ‘non LP’ on Young Turks, which has cemented him as true auteur of the sampler. His rivertrance remix of OFI is simply amazing. How he’s turned the classic Detroit electro of the original into a twisted, psychedelic symphony that laughs in the face of genres, without losing the Model 500 feel, god only knows, but we’re glad he has. Space Dimension Controller returns to the label after releasing his critically acclaimed Temporary Thrillz doublepack. He’s the perfect remixer choice, another space obsessed producer, working on analogue gear and singing on his own tracks like Juan has done since the Cybotron days. SDC replaces Juan’s vocals for his own on his evasive funk mix, keeping the tempo of the original intact, but taking things deeper in his signature style. This single effortly merges the R&S heritage with the forward thinking electronic music of 2011 perfectly, and is a bold statement of intent for the new year.

LIME004 – Jade & Matt-U – Echoes – 12″ Vinyl
Lime Dubz keep on cracking with another too hot to handle release.. The long time duo Jade & Matt-U are reunited once again but not for getting back to their dnb roots. No Jade teams up with Matt-U for some highly technical Dubstep sounds.. Grindhouse on Jade’s Venom LP was just a taster of what was to come.. With Grindhouse still freshly engraved into our memories it’s time to unleash it on vinyl.. But now with 2 brand spanking new heavyweights on there.. Echoes is a sinister roller that’s all over the place bouncing left right up and down there’s no defending against this monster track.. Instead of going all tear out they crossover to a more medi hybrid sound that will suit well with Dubsteppers of all ages.. The last new track on the 12 is Pump. You guys are thinking it.. and we can confirm.. Yes this is a bass line monster if there ever was one. Grab all of your PA’s boys and girls and turn up the volume to max cause its only happening when your chest starts rattlin..

RWINA011 – Swindle – Playground – 12″ Vinyl
London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown? On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions. The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

Hotflush Recordings present “BACK AND 4TH”

Posted 03 February 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

With dubstep’s big push into the mainstream, stirring up all manner of hybrids, variants and mutations, it’s worth remembering that some have been creating fresh twists on the current generation of global bass music from its very inception.

Paul Rose, aka Scuba, and his Hotflush label have, since 2003, had experimentation and genre-collision etched into the very structures of everything they do. Putting out key tunes by the core pioneers of dubstep, but also by true outliers like Mount Kimbie, Joy Orbison and Sepalcure, Hotflush has created a sense of absolute consistence in diversity: multiple sounds united by true craftsmanship and high-tech expression of complex emotion.

Joining the UK underground to the deep-rooted techno culture of Berlin, where Rose is now resident, the label is a vital nexus in the flow of musical information that is fuelling the current innovative climate. So next time you hear someone talking about “post-” this or “future-” that, consider that maybe the times are just catching up with Hotflush.

BACK AND 4TH features ten brand new exclusive tracks from bass music’s most innovative producers including: dBridge, Roska, Boddika and FaltyDL as well as a collection of essentials from Hotflush’s catalogue with tracks and remixes from James Blake, Untold, Pangaea, 2562 and more.

The compilation is presented in double-CD and digital download formats, as well as a triple 12” vinyl release of the first disc.
