Emalkay “Eclipse” LP Forthcoming on Dub Police Records

Posted 30 March 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Dub Police are proud to announce the release of their first artist album courtesy of Birmingham based producer Emalkay, who is set to release his hotly anticipated debut LP ‘Eclipse’ this Spring. First making a name for himself with early releases on his own Morphic Sounds imprint, Emalkay has continued to push the boundaries of underground bass music ever since, delivering a slew of huge releases on the way.

Having been an integral part of the Dub Police stable ever since his ‘Explicit / Heroics’ 12” for the label in 2009, Emalkay has gone from strength to strength with a series of heavyweight tracks that includes the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ and recent smash ‘Crusader’.

Emalkay

Comprised of 11 tracks, ‘Eclipse’ is a bold and powerful album encapsulating perfectly everything that makes Emalkay such a prodigious talent, effortlessly showcasing the depth and diversity of his sound while always remaining true to his inimitable style. As addictive as it is hard-hitting, the album doesn’t just provide a collection of dancefloor tracks, but a confident and coherent artistic statement.

While keeping the tempo around 140bpm, Emalkay experiments with new rhythms and sounds, delving deep into his own musical DNA to create something unique and fresh. Robust drum lines and rib-rattling basslines collide with evocative atmospheres and a deft melodic touch to devastating effect, giving the album both immediate impact and lasting mystique.

New D&B Releases

MODULE005 – FD – Stack / Sent Down – 10″ Vinyl
Critical’s beloved new-kid-on-the-block Modulations imprint draws up another naughty storm in the form of ‘Stack’ b/w ‘Sent Down’ featuring Script. Having had releases on top-notch labels including Metalheadz and Critical, London-based FD is swiftly gaining recognition for upping the dance floor ante with scrumptiously deep demeanor. ‘Stack’ is a stepper that delivers efficient pulse and vibrancy, notably in its teasing bassline and clean snare, peppered with bleeps and vocals conjuring a feel of eerie, futuristic space-age. The AA side retains the energetic deep-liquid flow – ‘Sent Down’s initially gentle pads venture into a neat, nasty break and a mean grizzly, almost unpredictable, bassline. Listen out for the dark distorted vocal that brings you down to the darker corners of the dance floor. Shimmying symbols linger above the downright devilish drum-kit. Definitely a playful bass-heavy monster,’Sent Down’ is a shuffling pumper of a tune that deserves to wake the neighbours. And if they hate that resonating, violating bass, it can only be a good thing. DJ support from Noisia, Loxy, Logistics, Kasra, Ulterior, Motive Jubei, DJ Lee, Octane

Cern releases the sampler to the forthcoming album ‘Terminus’ on Project 51. Cern describes “Terminus” as “an album that takes its roots from Techstep and funk driven D&B,” going on to say “the album reflects the inspiration gained from his long standing admiration for producers like Ed Rush & Optical, Matrix, Konflict and Source Direct”, incorporating the sound they represented at a time, in his opinion, when Drum & Bass was “at its peak”

INVISIBLE003 – Hybris – Invisible 003 EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Hybris is Evan Vischi. After years of being a studio recluse, Evan surfaced in the DC scene and released collaborations and solo projects under the name Robot Death Squad. He then moved to the Czech Republic to focus on advancing his own sound and began releasing under the name Hybris. Towards the end of 2009 his tunes were spotted and picked up by Kasra, and his debut single was released on Critical: Modulations (The Cleaner/ Raindance) in June of 2010. With several forthcoming releases on C.I.A., Blackout Music, and Critical, and DJ support from some of the scene’s heaviest hitters, Evan is now committed to pushing heavy and precise dancefloor beats to the next level. For INVISIBLE, Hybris collaberates succesfully with the mighty NOISIA and drops 3 new solo tracks on this very special double pack vinyl. Great new sounds on the always evolving Invisible imprint.

CLS013 – Command Strange & Intelligent Manners – Talking About Love / Beautiful Days – 12″ Vinyl
Celsius is back once again with another release that’ll raise the temperatures in seconds! This 12 comes from the hands of ‘Command Strange’.. After his successful  ‘Soul Booster’ Album on Fokuz Recordings last year he’s ready to show everybody what he can do.. ‘Talking About Love’ is a lush sexy collab between ‘Command Strange’ & ‘Intelligent Manners’ that’s just too perfect for the upcoming spring season. The hiphop breakdown shows little nods towards Mutt’s sound but in its own way. The almost Cee-Lo Green ish vocals in the back aren’t making this track hold back one bit.. ‘Beautiful Days’ shows CS on the solo tip once again.. in other words.. Brace yourself for a sweet delicate roller with a sharp edge.. Lovely rolling breaks in the back and sensual piano strokes.. Let’s the girls melt like butter in your hands!

PRSPCT013 – Donny – Crawler / Fiend – 12″ Vinyl
You may think.. what could PRSPCT release anymore to up the game? Easy.. Just give madman Donny enough time and he’ll create a beast that people never thought they would ever hear.. The first behemoth track is ‘Crawler’.. This one drills through crowds like a huge demonic worm. Feel it slippin and sliding across the lower bass regions.. Just to strike at you with its amen breaks when your guard is down. This infectious roller shows a face PRSPCT is known for.. Cold, destructive sounds like no other. Flip it over for ‘Fiend’ In true Donny style he goes in like no other.. Sounding like a army of trash bin robots destroying the city brick by brick.. In true War of the Worlds fashion they run rampant without any regard for human life.. Donny fits the bill once again with a bigtime release crafted perfectly for PRSPCT.. Give General Thrasher another medal for this one!

FCR003EP – Paper Crows – Fingertips (Break Remix) / Follow The Leader E.P. – 12″ Vinyl
‘Follow The Leader’/’Fingertips’ is the second release from rising stars Paper Crows, who’ve already caught the attention of tastemakers across the blogosphere, print and radio. Follow The Leader’ is a brilliantly, dark, unsettling, underground track that comes with a top drawer remix package. Hotly tipped newcomers Megabits deliver an insanely unique widescreen drum & bass/breaks/electro hybrid, while the legend that is Break delivers another stunning drum & bass remix. ‘Fingertips’ is quite simply a stunning song oozing with wild atmospheric beauty. It has aptly been described as “the marching of dreams on a star studded night” and is already being championed by Radio 1’s Nick Grimshaw. Paper Crows have been wowing audiences with their live shows with sultry singer Emma Panas mesmerising with her spectral vocals and dramatic stage presence. With still less than a dozen gigs under their belt, they’ve already supported the likes of Jamie Woon and Clock Opera. Their next show is at the Barfly in Camden on the 4th February. They’ll be playing alongside Anna Calvi and Sparrow & The Workshop as part of HMV’s Next Big Thing festival. The pair are currently in the studio recording their debut album.

GEN175006 – Deathmachine – Dark Energy / They Hunt Us – 12″ Vinyl
Deathmachine is the second artist to successfully infiltrate the ranks of The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. This release is reminiscent of some of The Outside Agency’s earlier work on One Seven Five, and we’re not saying that like it’s a bad thing. In Dark Energy pounding yet groovy distorted hardcore kicks, topped off with the snappiest of snaredrums, and a fittingly Bristish vocal sample make up the ingredients for this stormer that is guaranteed to make even the most stubborn dancefloor bust a move. They Hunt Us on the flip is a clear nod to Deathmachine’s love affair with drum & bass. He wined it, dined it, and ultimately wrote a song about it. Would you like to hear it? Here it goes. Support from: The DJ Producer, Counterstrike, The Outside Agency, Ophidian, Fracture 4

New Bass Music CD

HFCD005 – Hotflush / Various – BACK AND 4TH – CD x 2
With dubstep’s big push into the mainstream, stirring up all manner of hybrids, variants and mutations, it’s worth remembering that some have been creating fresh twists on the current generation of global bass music from its very inception. Paul Rose, aka Scuba, and his Hotflush label have, since 2003, had experimentation and genre-collision etched into the very structures of everything they do. Putting out key tunes by the core pioneers of dubstep, but also by true outliers like Mount Kimbie, Joy Orbison and Sepalcure, Hotflush has created a sense of absolute consistence in diversity: multiple sounds united by true craftsmanship and high-tech expression of complex emotion. Joining the UK underground to the deep-rooted techno culture of Berlin, where Rose is now resident, the label is a vital nexus in the flow of musical information that is fuelling the current innovative climate. So next time you hear someone talking about “post-” this or “future-” that, consider that maybe the times are just catching up with Hotflush. BACK AND 4TH features ten brand new tracks from bass music’s most innovative producers, as well as a collection of essentials from Hotflush’s recent catalogue. DOUBT001CD – 2562 – Fever – CD
What’s the point of a concept album when no one hears the concept in it? Maybe that it sets a boundary, forcing mr artist to go even deeper into the fewer possibilities left. Creativity by limitation and all that… we’ll spare you further theorizing. ‘Fever’, the third longplayer by dutch low end scientist 2562, then, is his disco album: a thorough reinterpretation of underground disco music from the mid seventies to the early eighties, with his own birthyear 1979 as the gravitational point. All based on one simple rule: every single sound, from the smallest background shiver to the most obese sub bass, originates from a disco record – no additional synthesizers, drumcomputers or other samplesources involved. Disco-edits, italo homages or filtered loops then? Hardly. This is genuinely new and retro-free music that respectfully flips its sources so hard even the biggest Paradise Garage connaisseurs won’t recognize what just hit them. Or in the words of musical allies Martyn and Pinch, who independently drew the same conclusion: “Sorry, but I don’t hear that whole disco story in there. This simply sounds like you.” Completely failed as a concept album, then – and all the better for it.

DRUNK021 – Kahn – Like We Used To / Helter Skelter – 12″ Vinyl
New year, New blood. Kahn steps forward from the shadows of the Bristol underground to deliver a killer double A side debut 12” release for Punch Drunk Records. The immediacy of Kahn’s brand of electrostatic synths and stirring, moody grooves are sure to rapidly ascend his profile in 2011. ‘Like We Used To’ strikingly layers a neck snapping rhythm with mutated soulful vocals, whilst ‘Helter Skelter’ brings enough irresistible bump and flex to move any dancefloor. Kahn’s basslines may eminate from Bristol, but prepare to feel the resonance worldwide. Bristol’s Punch Drunk label recently reached it’s landmark 20th 12” release and was voted #18 in Resident Advisor magazine’s Best Labels of 2010 poll.

HF027 – Joy O – Wade In / Jels – 12″ Vinyl
Since the release of his debut “Hyph Mngo” that swept the global dance music world in 2009, British producer Peter O’Grady (aka Orbison) makes his return on Hotflush Recordings as Joy O in 2011. These two productions take a more straightforward approach, toeing along the lines of classic house music, infused with this talented producer’s own signature style, weaving rolling acidic basslines in “Wade In” and uplifting melodies in “Jels” and over shuffling Roland drums and blissful atmospherics.

ROTTUN007 – Downlink – Biohazard / Zombie Apocolypse – 12″ Vinyl
Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep. With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. His first two releases charted at #1 on several popular online music stores and soon he found his way onto Rottun Recordings which seemed a suiting place for his music. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from the likes of Nero, Excision, Datsik, Rusko, Dieselboy, Crookers and many more. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience…

OSMUK012 – DJ Madd – Pitch Black / New Reality – 12″ Vinyl
DJ Madd has been killing it recently. It’s another knee-slapping combination drenched in powerful vibes and both tunes are nasty, guttural affairs sure to make your eyeballs rattle. The sound of the release as whole is a little reminiscent of Distance, with crunchy basslines rasping and snarling like enraged wolves savaging a couple of fwuffy wittle bunnies. Thankfully, I love both Distance and bloody carnage, so this is a cracker. words by http://www.boxmusique.com/dj-madd-pitch-black-new-reality-osmuk012

3024011 – Julio Bashmore – Batty Knee Dance / Ribble To Amazon – 12″ Vinyl
Two brand new tracks from Bristol’s emergent House prodigy. Batty Knee Dance brings ultra syncopated 808′s, neurotic synths and a mournful vocal refrain together in a tightly packaged low drag configuration. Ribble To Amazon maintains the levels of 808 astro physics but heads for the great outdoors with subtly staggered pads and an impossibly delicate Lepidopteran melody basking in a 16:9 sunset. Exclusive to the digital Grand National winds down with wistful synth trumpets and a rhythmic strut perfectly aligned with the greatest roller disco ever.

KOKO is a hypy swingtime-jam ready to make dancefloors go nuts; thrilling percussive variations, deep sub hits and nutty samples. The more soulful, yet experimental ANALIES, draws on HYPNOs signature percussion. Adding sampled vocals, effective kick-drum patternshifts, takes the listener off-guard! Truly, a top shelf twelve! DP051 – Antiserum – Zephyr / Purple & Gold – 12″ Vinyl
San Francisco-based producer Antiserum steps up for Dub Police with two unique collaborations, featuring local producers Ill-Esha and 12th Planet respectively. His music is a masterfully crafted fusion of influences that results in a sound entirely his own, balancing light against dark and colour against pure bass pressure. Showcasing a deft musicality as well as an unrivalled talent for system shaking productions, Antiserum is taking the scene by storm. Releases on Narco.Hz, S.C.U.M and Argon amongst others have already propelled him to the forefront of the rapidly growing American dubstep scene, with plenty more still to come. On the A side, he is joined by Ill-Esha on ‘Zephyr’, a sick g-funk inflected roller. Skittering hi-hats and tough drums lay the foundations on this one, with the deep, smooth bass sweeping underneath. The vibrant synths weave in and out of each other with ease, swimming around the mix and swelling expansively through the speakers. On the flip he teams up with 12th Planet on the massive ‘Purple & Gold’. The g-funk influences continue to flow through this track, pinned down by a hard bassline and taut drums. The shimmering synths sliding over the top of the percussion and off into the atmosphere give the track an epic stop-in-your-tracks effect.

New D&B Releases

SECOPS015 – Seba & Method One – Heavy Traffic / Mr Downstairs – 12″ Vinyl
Secret Operations enter the new year with “Heavy traffic”. A heavy roller from Sweden’s finest Seba teaming up with San Franciscos finest Method One. Heavy bassline, steppy beat, and chopping amen breaks is what this track is all about. The flipside “Mr. downstairs” is more laidback, and draws the memories back to the Good Looking days, back in 96-98 era. Watch out for secops 016. This time Seba collaborates with Finnish Producer/DJ Physics. It’s already got support from Storm on her Ministry of sound show.

DETAIL005 – Lynx & Hellrazor / Lynx Ft. Spikey Tee – Dirty Red / 5am Soul City – 12″ Vinyl
Detail 005 is the next single from label boss Lynx. Dirty Red is a bit of a monster and has been getting huge support from Marky, Marcus Intalex, Nu:Tone Bailey and Shy FX. The intro builds with sci fi strings that progress like a train hurtling down the tracks out of control. It reaches a crescendo with the sound of squealing brakes and drops into a menacing talk box bassline and Lynx’s sharp 2 step beats. 5.a.m Soul City is a collaboration between Lynx and London born, Sydney based soul vocalist, Spikey Tee. The track has the vibe of walking through the backstreets of a city in the early hours of the morning. Subdued chords, scattered pianos and rustles of the streets and distant cars litter this liquid vocal track.

DSM017 – Nether – True Believer / True Believer (Marcus Intalex’s Dancehall Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
The Deep Soul Music mission of releasing high quality drum & bass continues with this the 17th vinyl release. Australian Nether has already graced DSM twice with the laid back grooves of ‘Lust’, which featured on the ‘Intelligent Systems Volume One EP’, and ‘Skeletons’, which was included in the exclusive DSM x Lacoste project. With Marcus Intalex on remix duties for the AA side, this is one very special slice of wax. This 12” is an important milestone for DSM. It lays down a marker and is a signal of intent that Deep Soul Music is no longer a fledgling label fighting to gain recognition and acceptance within drum & bass. Rather, it has grown to be one of d&b’s leading lights, one of the most respected labels within the global scene, and a point of reference and inspiration for the multitude of other dj’s, producers and labels currently operating in the genre. With their place at drum & bass’s top table now secure, and with a close working relationship developed with a group of exceptionally talented artists such as Anile, Sam KDC,Synth Sense, Triad and June Miller, the only way for DSM is up. The AA side sees the Soul:R boss and all round round drum & bass legend flip things 180 degrees for his remix. The abstract, almost introspective feel of the original is removed in favour of straight up feel good summer time dancefloor vibes. Big bouncy bass stabs and a crisp rolling drum break aim the tune firmly at the ravers and its been a firm favourite of many an a-lister over the past few months looking to amp up the vibes and energy levels of their sets.

Fresh from the success of ‘Clock Out’, Need For Mirrors make a quick return to Inneractive Music with one of it’s most awaited releases. Originally released in 2001 on Phantom Audio, ten years later and the duo bring Spirit’s ‘Three In One’ to a new generation, keeping that irresistibly funky flow while toughening up the groove with some killer bass work and thumping beats, already gracing the sets of Dj Hype, Goldie, Storm, Raiden, TC1 and a host of others. Spirit himself gets deep and dirty on ‘Juggernaut’ with it’s sparse drums, deep subs and growling synths, creating a groove that just can’t be stopped…. DJ Mag 9/10

NZ013 – Dose – Reason Being / Helpless – 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition Orange Vinyl Promos. The first solo 12″ for Samurai Music by rising kiwi star ‘Dose’. Co-writer of one of the labels biggest ever selling releases (‘The Other Part Of Me’ with Trei), the recent UK migrant comes with what we feel is his best work to date. ‘Reason Being’ defines the term roller, and with its euphoric middle section mixes the ruffness of its driving rhythm with the silky smoothness of its melodic overcoat. ‘Helpless’ is another tech funk masterpiece from Dose which has been competing strongly for A side status since we signed this 12″. DJ support from Klute, Teebee, Spectrasoul, Marky, Break, Logistics, Phace, State Of Mind and many more. Watch for the forthcoming Dose full length album in late 2011 on Samurai Music

New Bass Music CD

EXITCD007 – They Live – Cancel Standard – CD
Exit Records bring a new project to the table with a collaboration between Consequence and Joe Seven. Consequence made his debut on Exit in 2009 with his highly acclaimed album ‘Live For Never’ capturing the attention of electronica fans world-wide with his organic and unique take on Drum n Bass. Also having been a staple part of the Autonomic camp since day one, he’s slowly but surely developing his sound and delving deeper into the unknown. This time he teams up with another new Exit artist Joe Seven (who has an imminent solo single) and together they have created the They Live alias to showcase what happens when these two minds meet in the studio. The album is very much intended to be listened to in the order it has been presented, as a whole body of music meant to capture your senses and lead you across a soundscape of atmospheres, textures, differing tempos and a variety of percussion elements. In the same way as a silent movie can stimulate your sense of hearing, Cancel Standard does the opposite like an imageless movie, giving you the soundtrack and letting you imagine your own visual elements. Each track sets its own scene that is part of the bigger picture, creating a body of music that can offer the listener detachment from their immediate surroundings and escapism into an alternate reality.

New Bass Music releases

DP048 – D1 Ft. Jenna G – Floods Of Emotions / Bleeps To Broadway – 12″ Vinyl
D1 has once again come up with the goods, and delivered two brilliant old skool-influenced dancefloor tracks. ‘Flood Of Emotions’ featuring renowned vocalist Jenna G, showcases D1’s trademark melodic sensibility, while maintaining the tough drums and pure bass pressure that makes UK bass music so exciting and impactful. Driven by a classic hardcore break, the track penetrates right through you while the uplifting melody, complimented by Jenna’s vocals, washes over you beautifully. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ takes similar rave influences, this time moulding them around tough, stripped down drums and futuristic bleeps. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ is also accompanied by the 130 mix, which opens up the track, slowing the groove down and giving it some extra room to breathe. D1 was one of the earliest proponents of the emerging dubstep sound, and has remained one of the scene’s most creative and exciting producers ever since. Responsible for a number of seminal dubstep tracks, he has been a long-time Dub Police affiliate and has had support from all of the biggest players in the scene, also releasing tracks on esteemed labels like Tempa, Soulja and Dub Files. He continues to push his sound forward and evolve with each and every release, and never fails to surprise! Judging on the pure quality of these tracks, 2011 is set to be a big year for D1…

SAIGON004 – Orphan101 – Into You EP – 12″ Vinyl
Orphan101 makes his return to the Saigon Recordings imprint and rides the success of his recent 2-tracker on Appleblim’s Applepips label. This 3 track EP really serves to showcase the diversity of sounds coming from the Orphan camp, from the 4 to the floor techno stomper that is ‘Into You’, to the deep meditative low slung ‘Baracca’ to the down-right abstract ‘Typical’. File under BASS! Karl Moestl (Defusion Records) “Love It! Will be playing this in the clubs!” Angel Molina (Sonar / Tresor) “This is very sinister, love it! The whole record is for me!” XLR8R “Incredibly Deep, Incredibly Awesome!”

BUILD005 – Baobinga & Hyetal – Anything For Now / Trouble – 12″ Vinyl
We kick off 2011 with the latest collaborative plate of Bristol-based Build badness – label boss Baobinga cooking up two ‘what-do-you-call-it’ tracks with one of 2010s breakthrough producers, the man they call Hyetal. Starting 2010 with a huge Punch Drunk release alongside Shortstuff, Hyetal further refined his sound through collaborations with Peverelist, and the massive Prince-tastic anthem ‘Phoenix’ on Orca – which can be found sitting proudly at number 36 in FACT Magazine’s ‘Tracks Of The Year’ run-down. With some big releases due in 2011, and more Velour beats (with Julio Bashmore) on the way, we’re very excited to have him involved in a Build release. The A side here, ‘Anything For Now’, is a perfect example of when collaborations work perfectly – and finished every set of Ginz’s recent US tour to rapturous response. Through the course of an ever-evolving arrangement, tough dancefloor drums drive epic synth lines and melodies forward to a point of ecstatic release, all tied together with powerful sub-bass and a staggering level of detail. Meanwhile, the AA, ‘Trouble’, could almost be dancehall from alpha-centuri, as again, a cornucopia of glistening chords, synthetic steel drums and swaggering, swinging drums proper the dancefloor through spiky, bruising bass-weight punches. As a staple of both producers’ sets, ‘Trouble’ has been shown to do the business without ever resorting to cliche.

PSQ005 – Furesshu – Lucid / Lifted (Shifted Remix) / All I Want – 12″ Vinyl
PSQ005 is Furesshu’s follow up 12 inch release to last year’s trio of tracks (PSQ002) that garnered attention from Ben Klock, Sigha and Marcel Dettmann, who continues to play out his music regularly. Furesshu’s bleak and powerful remix of L-OW (PSQ003) has been criminally under appreciated, and now his second 12 inch on Project Squared (PSQ005) will showcase a more House influenced, but still Techno at its core, sound with ‘Lucid’ and ‘All I Want’. Both tunes work around short vocal snippets, employing them to melodic, repetitive effect within a sparse but subtly evolving soundstage. Providing a remix of ‘Lucid’, Shifted converts the House tinged original into straight up, heavy hitting Techno, with relentless kick drum, melodic stabs and the occasional clap. Shifted has made a big impact with his debut 12″ on Mote Evolver and he has a stack of 12s lined up for 2011 on some very solid labels. Similarly, with a forthcoming release on the new Commune label in early 2011 and more to follow, this is going to be a big year for Furesshu.

RS1103 – Lone – Echo Locations EP (LIMITED EDITION CLEAR VINYL DOUBLEPACK) – 12″ Vinyl x 2
With Coreshine Voodoo, wunderkind Lone makes his R&S debut and we’re super hyped to have him along for the ride! With these 6 tracks we’ve got a honing of the styles we saw on display on Emerald Fantasy Tracks with a stronger focus on the floors of Detroit & Chicago, which sits so perfectly in the newly invigorated R&S camp. Known to his friends and family as Matt Cutler, Lone started life as a bedroom child producer in Nottingham experimenting with Hip Hop, early 90s Hardcore, Techno and Electronic music for years before dropping his lush, dream-hop début opus ‘Lemurian’ to critical acclaim. A remix of Bibio for Warp followed, whilst Werk Discs released the follow up album ‘Ecstasy & Friends’. Swerving the dream-hop moniker attributed to earlier work, this EP picks up where last year’s stunning album “Emerald Fantasy Tracks“ left off. Distilling so many different ‘labels’ and ‘influences’ into just 9 tracks, EFT explored the heavier sounds of Chicago house & Detroit Techno through to early Warp releases and 90′s London rave/hardcore with cinematic overtones. Aimed at destroying parties whilst staying true to his beautiful, nostalgic melodic style essentially. The complex rhythms and drum programming and huge stabs at the drop make Coreshine Voodoo the pick of the tracks for full dancefloor distortion. It’d be just at home in the Motor City as in the steely English North, whilst finding time to jam with the drum machines of Ceephax or Luke Vibert… and yet it’s still so characteristically Lone. On Explorers we delve deeper into the Detroit flavor drawing up comparisons with Carl Craig and Model 500. With a true understanding of melody that permeates through the track whilst still using the great washes of sound and looped-up, effected vocals this has end-of-nighter written all over it. Further down the line through this stunning EP, Dolphin focuses it’s swathes of sound via a simple but effective synth line with washes of reverbed melody from all sides. The darker bleep core of Rapid Racer reminds me of last summer when Mr. Jeff Mills tore the roof off Space with just his 909. This time though Lone’s managed to sneak a melody in, alongside some off-kilter vocal sample re-imaginings. It’s like all my favourite types of electronic music squeezed into a single track. God knows what he’s making this on but it sounds like it was made in a grimy Detroit warehouse, circa 1984 then rinsed through Castle Morton, on through the legendary Warp rave in Battersea Power Station, back through the Balearic isle and over to the Rotters Golf Club. Blossom Quarter tones thing down briefly with Mr Cutler’s Boards-esque constructions sneaking in, till the Casio-core lets loose. You’re looking for a more complex description but let’s be honest, it’s as if Network Records were have a head on battle with Planet E whilst Boards adjudicated. Approaching Rainbow rounds the EP off into more mellow territories. We need to rest those feet after those first 5 tracks anyway! A truly special EP from a rising star of the further reaches of electronic sonic scopes.

HRMN015 – Easy and the Center of Universe – Pythagoras Falafel Calamity – 12″ Vinyl
Easy and the Center Of The Universe we already know from their recent Flogsta Danshall 7 inch release and some skweee compilers, remember Legend Of Selda on Skweee Tooth?!!?!? This new release on Harmonia is as the previous ones infected with Arabian soundbites. We recognize the details from our nights in the Medina of Marrakesh, we slip into our caftan, smoke the water pipe and drink mint tea, and are bodypoppin’ like an Egyptian.. No kiddin’, this record is so imaginative and so true to its style that you can’t go any other way. Details of the percussion on Halloumi are so good with the details in the orchestration (references to Uom Kalthoum records come to mind) the pitch and modulation wheels used intensive. mnWith this release Easy & Center Of The Universe prooves again that skweee is one of the most evolving styles at the moment. This is exotic and exiting music.

NONPLUSLP002PART2 – LOL – LOL Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

WHEELYDEALY014 – DJ Madd – Battle / Secrets – 12″ Vinyl
N Types label coms correct each and every time. Budapest born but now Bristol based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles – mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd – known to his parents as Peter Simon – manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days In his own words when speaking to the Sonic Router blog last year: “appreciating both Rusko and Martyn at the same time is not a crime,”

NONPLUS012 – Boddika – You Tell Me / Breezin – 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus+ label owners Instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with Al Bleek working under his Boddika alias and Kid Drama as Jon Convex. Here we have Boddika’s first output on Nonplus+ after his debut on Naked Lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming EP on Swamp 81. His work has been supported by DJs across the board such as Benji B, Oneman, Scuba, Shy FX, Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Leofah, Skream and Zed Bias amongst many others. a) Boddika ‘You Tell Me’ ‘You Tell Me’ takes us back to the 80s with its electro tinged thumping drums and freaky synths. What at first seems to be a pretty straightforward track slowly mutates into an ugly beast with its pitch bent lead and warping drum grooves that slowly swing so far out and eventually re-sync with each significant transition. Not for the seasick. aa) Boddika ‘Breezin’ On the flip Boddika provides another striped back dancefloor warmer but here he comes with a 4×4 drum pattern. With very few elements he exploits them all to their limits and the track moves with an everchanging undercurrent of acid bass coated with subtle synth melodies that work their way around the bass in a mesmerizing arrangement. Another example of Boddika’s talent for working sound to maximum effect and keeping it simple but effective.

DKX004 – Gerry Read – Patterns / Last Time – 12″ Vinyl
Gerry Read’s much loved “Patterns” finally receives a limited edition vinyl run backed by new track “Last Time” – available exclusively on vinyl. “Patterns” brought euphoria to a dark dub/2-step sound and has been rinsed by forward-looking selectors like Untold, Starkey & Mumdance – and played on the world’s smarter radio stations, Rinse FM, Sub FM, Subjam & Fevah. New track “Last Time” is a slab of reverse-engineered, 2011 house music. A stepping woodblock rhythm pins down plaintive vocals as a spooked synth line controls the release. In any one else’s hands that would add up to dark vibes, but Gerry crafts it to deliver bittersweet euphoria of the best kind. Expect to hear this track everywhere, from grimey backrooms in Bristol to Ibiza beach bars. Since receiving widespread acclaim for his first release from the likes of FACT, Sonic Router and other forward-thinking blogs, Gerry is now working on a number of different label projects, and collaborations with up and coming artists. Gerry recently returned to the UK after spending several years in Australia. The separation from the UK bass scene helped him craft his unique sound, while retaining a deep understanding of his musical influences. Sonically, comparisons range anywhere from Actress to James Blake, with a love for dusty, crushed, vintage sound. But few other producers can combine sonic warmth with real dancefloor energy. Dark Arx Recordings is a home for artists on the fringes of the dubstep/bass/techno scenes.

Regarded by many as the finest electronic producer of his generation, the mysterious LA-based Photek enjoyed considerable success throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with his own mutant breed of jungle and drum’n’bass. After a four-year hiatus from releasing music (and just over ten years since his last LP ‘Solaris’), the legendary Photek is back with a new sound and brand new 4-track EP – an occasion definitely worth the wait. Never one to stand still, Photek’s enviable reputation has been built not just on his ability to inspire both his fans and peers over the years through his productions but also through his knack of reinventing his sound time and time again. With his early work (under a variety of aliases) proving hugely popular in clubs, it wasn’t until ’97 when he released his now-classic debut album ‘Modus Operandi’ that he truly arrived, defying both his existing fan base and the Jungle scene as he pioneered a new alternative to the big room rollers that defined the era at that time. Three years later he surprised again, embracing Chicago acid-house and techno for his second artist album ‘Solaris’ in 2000, working with the brilliant Robert Owens on the classic single ‘Mine To Give’. Further EP’s followed after the turn of the millennium, as well as a number of film score credits (including The Matrix), but in 2011 he has once again shifted the gears, re-inspired by UK bass music and the current crop of young producers – Photek has a new sound to share with the world. Multiple Radio Plays by: Benji B, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam, Nick Grimshaw, Greenmoney, Jon Kennedy.

DP052 – Emalkay – Fabrication / Massive – 12″ Vinyl
Emalkay continues his unstoppable run of form with the new single ‘Fabrication’, a track that is as addictive as it is hard-hitting. Drifting in on the soft siren call of the vocals, Emalkay filters the bass through the intro, building to the drop of the catchy, mutating bassline. The organic skitter of hi-hats gives the sparse drum pattern its swing, leaving the bass to do the damage! On the flip ‘Massive’ cranks up the pressure with a serious head down steppa. The razor sharp bassline cuts through the track like a knife, held down only by the stomp of the drums, while the ebb and flow of the pads gives an underlying eerie atmosphere to the track. 2010 was a huge year for Emalkay. Having been thrown in to the limelight by the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ towards the end of 2009, he has continued to penetrate through the scene with a series of quality releases like ‘Crusader / Power Tool’ and ‘Solid State / Battle Suit’. With no sign of slowing down any time soon, he continues to cement his place as one of the most exciting producers around with each new track. Stepping into 2011 with the support of the biggest DJs on the scene, some seriously heavyweight artillery and an album due out later this year on Dub Police, there really is no stopping Emalkay at the moment!

NDLTD002 – Unquote – Cold Tenderness (Original Mix) / Cold Tenderness (DFRNT Remix) – 10″ Vinyl
Unquote is the guise used by Russian electronic music producer Vsevolod Ermakov. He joins a trend of exciting new producers from eastern europe delivering a new interpretation of experimental drum & bass and dubstep. He has, to date, clocked up releases on some of the scenes most forward thinking labels, including a single on Med School and releases on Hospital and Influenza Media. He has also been tipped as ‘one to watch’ by London Electricity on the acclaimed Hospital Podcast. Cold Tenderness is, as the title suggests, an emotional and melancholy piece of ambient dubstep. It’s stirring synths and haunting vocals create what is, quite simply, a breathtaking track that you will want to play again and again. The flipside see’s edinburgh’s finest DFRNT on remix duty giving us a glimpse of what is to come on his forthcoming extended player on Nu Directions later in the spring.

GCW01V – Mudkid – Loik – 10″ Vinyl
10″ candy coloured vinyl. Hand stamped & numbered in the Cottage (350 run) Cut@Loud NO MP3/ Digital – heavy duty clear poly sleeve. Mudkid is Franklin De Costa – Support from Luke Solomon & Ewan Pearson Mudkid always holds the fort when it comes to large girthed funk jams. Loik comes with a toe curling array of mechanical energy and stomping house plushness, all the while acting as a constant foray into your subconscious dealings. Franklin’s got wigging out down to a tee without ever loosing touch of keeping things moving. Based around an audible struggle of sorts, side A rides complex rhythms and simmering restraint. It’s tight yet seemingly loose flow has it’s roots firmly dug up from dub terra firma. A buttock clenching accolade to ruff skanking and ritualistic bounce, chiefing the floor as an ambassador to going mental. Acting as a tug of war of thoughts, side b dawdles with dreamy lushness. A soothing chafe to the celebral bounds on with glittering effect. A wobbly slur to Mudkid’s trademark rumble. Why don’t you open up yours senses and succumb to his meanderings. Even though all the nuts have been gone since December there’s still plenty to go round on this one.

Our debut is a tune that has been bubbling on the underground for a while a true clash of UK meets US. Rockwell takes the Cash Money Family (Lil Wayne, Birdman, Kevin Rudolf and the UKs very own International superstar Jay Sean) from the dirtee South to a whole ‘nother place. Rockwell has been doing amazing things in DnB for a while now but this is something else. Soulful and Funky, Fast and slow. You feel the groove but can’t quite place it. Already working for the few DJ’s that have it. This is set to do big things. If you are not a vocal person there is a killer dub too. Enjoy and Be quick!!

New D&B Releases

REDSEAL006 – ASC & Vaccine / ASC – Machines / Bleep Test – 12″ Vinyl
Limited Solid Gold Vinyl. Following the opening of 2011 with our first 12” from Need For Mirrors comes this sub bass bomb by the husband and wife team of ASC & Vaccine. Both artists have recorded for Instra:mental’s Nonplus label and dBridge’s Exit Recordings. Veteran producer ASC’s 2010 album ‘Nothing Is Certain’ for Non:Plus was without a doubt one of the most important electronic albums of the year, redefining the very limits of Drum and Bass and stretching the genres sound design to embrace other tempo’s. ‘Machines’ has received high rotate play from DJ’s like Doc Scott, Loxy, dBridge, Instra:mental, Flight, Need For Mirrors, Presha and many more. The tune signals a new direction for ASC, this time aided by his incredibly talented spouse who adds a subtly funky bounce to the groove. The B side marries a vintage Photek approach with a Krustesque quirk and gives birth to a totally unique innovative sound. Essential! Release number 2 for 2011 from the Samurai stable precedes the debut EP from hot newcomer kiwi’s Tokyo Prose and the debut solo single from another kiwi Dose, who produced one of our biggest selling singles ‘The Other Part Of Me’ alongside Trei in 2008. Also look for the rebirth of the ‘Foreign Exchange’ series from Samurai Music and further releases from ASC & Need For Mirrors on Samurai Red Seal.

CYN002 – Cyantific – Obey / Bounce It – 12″ Vinyl
DJ support: Andy C, High Contrast, London Elektricity, Logistics… Cyantific has been laying down his signature space-age sound since 2002 when Hospital Records embraced him into their family after a tipoff from High Contrast. Ever since then we have seen Jon go from strength to strength, with his achievements like BBC 1Xtra Breakthrough DJ award to his international tours and infamous 3-deck DJ sets. Cyantific launched his own label last year with the beautiful hit ‘Brighter Day’ (ft Logistics) and ‘88mph’. The New Year sees the label’s second release, which is nothing short of futuristic perfection. ‘OBEY’s’ sublime production and lively Back To The Future vibes make this tune an overwhelmingly enjoyable dancefloor record. ‘OBEY’ is an unconventional roller but needless to say sheer genius with an immaculately produced video to accompany it. Continuing on with his innovative sound is ‘Bounce It’ on the flip side with high-energy danceability, accompanied by its entertaining electronic vocals. Cyantific first release of 2011 is setting the standards for an extremely big year, watch out for more releases coming soon as well as DJ sets around the globe.

WARM018 – Seba – Vanity / Nostalgia – 12″ Vinyl
Not many producers in drum & bass or music in general can have the sort of career where every piece of music that comes out of their studio is pure excellence. Sebastian Ahrenberg is one of the few musicians that fits easily into the category of excellence. This is his fourth release with Warm Communications and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results! A. VANITY – This is a proper bass workout from the man. Things kick off with super snappy breaks with amazing effects layered on top! Dark atmospheres creep in giving the tune amazing tension leading into what the tune is all about….bass! Distorted, thunderous bass leads the tune into some balanced keys giving the tune that perfect balance of rough and smooth Seba is known for! AA. NOSTALGIA – If you’re a fan of Seba’s uplifting, spine-tingling pieces…then this tune is for you! A solid, rolling break leading into uplifting synths and a guitar-like melody while the pulsating bassline will give any soundsystem a run for it’s money! This is a truly “hands in the air” kinda vibe that we know and love from Seba!

CF044 – Quadrant – Dermaphoria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Some producers are just so underrated that it makes you sick. Quadrant is a formation that’s been around since 2005 and has released tracks on prestigious labels like Renegade Hardware, Citrus, Fokuz to name a few. The quality of their output is extraordinarily crisp and original that it’s hard not to notice them, this Dermaphoria EP is exactly that. And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’ State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one. Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain. Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. When this one hits standing still is not an option, the bass line will sweep you of your feet in no time and shoot you into the Dermaphoria Quadrant. 0 Gravity beats and sweeps are coming at you at all sides so you are warned!

DP047 – Zero G – Bring It / Bring It (Subscape Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Following releases on some of the biggest labels in the game, including Liondub, XS Dubz and Digital Soundboy, we are very proud to present the Dub Police debut from Zero G. A no holds barred dancefloor bomb, ‘Bring It’ will hit you right where it counts. Using the pared down elements with maximum efficacy, the growling bassline riff rips right through the core of the track like a knife. The thumping kicks and the snap of the cavernous snares heightens the impact, while the tight percussive shuffle maintains the momentum, wrapping itself around the bassline. On the flip, ‘Bring It’ gets the remix treatment from long time Dub Police affiliate Subscape. Taking the original’s infectious bassline and ramping up the energy levels on it even further, he delivers a hard-hitting sonic onslaught. Having risen to the top in the drum and bass world with his uncompromising production style, Zero G has proven his versatility with a series of impressive dubstep releases in recent years, taking down the tempo while retaining all the energy. Maintaining the same impactful approach that garnered him so much attention with his drum and bass productions, he has quickly become one of the biggest dubstep producers in the scene today. Creeping in with a slightly haunting melody and sparse drums, ‘Pure Palms’ starts off with little indication of where the track might lead; it feels as though it could go in any direction. As it slowly builds, the warmth and weight – and deep-set rhythms – that Consequence is known for begin settling, and open up to an evocative, widescreen track of immense beauty. They Live’s musicality comes through strong throughout the detailed turnings of the downtempo masterpiece, with immersive low-end fills and intricate percussion that take all headphones hostage. ‘Don’t Know What To Say’ brings a darker edge, with crackling sound effects and an ominous, spine-chilling bassline that creates intense and intriguing dynamics. As a solemn melody builds, once again They Live bring a cinematic feel to the dense, ever-growing atmosphere. Brooding with textured sounds, skyscraping synths and head-nodding beats, the mesmerizing track shows huge promise of what’s to come from the powerful duo.

NCOMP003 – Marlow / Screen Age – Love Kills Slowly / What You Do To Me – 12″ Vinyl
DJ support from: Mistajam, Rob Da Bank, Doctor P, Caspa, Trolley Snatcha, 16Bit, Stenchman, Funtcase, Inspector Dubplate, Subscape, Propatingz, MRK1, Genetix, Persist. After the massive success of ‘Dubsteppa’, No Comply returns with two tracks aimed purely at the dancefloor. This is high-energy, contemporary Dubstep at it’s finest. For those of you looking for sure-fire dancefloor smashers – this 12” certainly won’t disappoint. Keeping with the usual style, this 12” is hand-painted, and individually numbered, and extremely limited. The previous two releases are now very hard to find, so don’t sleep on this.
A. MARLOW – LOVE KILLS SLOWLY: Marlow takes the a-side, with his first track in over a year. Described by Rob Da Bank as ‘Rib-Shaking Dubstep’, ‘Tuff!’ by Trolley Snatcha. This is everything you’d expect from Marlow and more. His usual signature elements are evident throughout: The epic intro, the dramatic buildup, and the almighty wallop of a drop.
B. SCREEN AGE – WHAT YOU DO TO ME: On the flip we see the debut solo release from one half of Southbound Hangers – Screen Age. This track is the second most requested track ever on Inspector Dubplate’s Youtube channel, after being featured on his Moustache Mixtape last year. check out his Felguk & Tim Healey remix on Surfer Rosa.

KAP006 – L-Wiz – Straitjacket / 4.42 OZ – 12″ Vinyl
Kapsize kick starts 2011 with 2 fresh cuts from a new label artist: L-Wiz. While L-Wiz is new to Kapsize, the Swedish duo are in no way new to the dubstep scene – drawing attention with killer tracks like ‘Girl From Codeine City’ and the classic ‘Girlfriend’, the production pair have been making high quality dubstep tracks since the early 2004-5 days, even launching the first ever release on Dub Police! It is with pleasure that we announce ‘Straitjacket’ and ’4.42 Oz’ find a home on Kapsize! Keeping in the spirit of Joker’s own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output – pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. ‘Straitjacket’ is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the ‘purple’ sound we all know and love at Kapsize – while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Flip for the equally melodic ’4.42 Oz’ which takes a more relaxed approach in vibe, taking things in a futuristic direction while simultaneously referencing the past. Beautifully produced elegant music that you will keep coming back to. DJ support from everyone from Plastician to 2562 as well as of course being a main staple in Joker’s own sets last year.

IBR005 – Various Artists – Tax Haven I – 12″ Vinyl
Iberian records comes out of a hibernation period with the a series of “Tax Haven” EPs. This first EP comes from a group of producers located in the Barcelona bass enclave and who have been some of the main players in the monthly B.LOW events there. Dedicated to what the label describes as Bass’n'Groove, this EP contains three varied and original sounding tunes with different Bpms suited to the leftfield of various bass music fields (dubstep/funky/future garage etc). First up sees Mr. Gasparov’s “Transient Love” come in the guise of a house influenced little gem of a tune featuring Japanese vocalist G.Rina (who has previosly worked with RSD and Nicolette) who cooes and whispers about transient lovers. Those of you already aquainted with Mr. Gasparov with his release on Soul Jazz Records “Steppas Delight 2″ compilation will recognize the attention to subtle melodic play. There is an overall summery vibe coming here – so something to warm us all up with and make us look ahead to brighter days. Accompany with a mojito and some afternoon sun! Next up sees Nehuen’s “Between Love and Hate” which is a tense stripped down bass’n'beat workout with a persistant bass riff and schizoid strings bringing the darkness. Nehuen is an artist that usually getting support from Dusk + Blackdowns Rinse radio show. There is a grimy and ruff feel here not to dissimilar to some Soulja releases from back in the day. Tuff steppas gear. On the 45rpm flip side Relocate come with their trademark relentness sub bass boogie on “Soul Survivor”. Opening with live drum rolls and low end throbs the tune drops into a driving heads down rhythm, laced with swinging ruff arse beats and a frustrated female vocal hook on the drop – “That I just came…” After which the rhythm section pounds away trying to please her! This is a souped up turbo garage workout pimped for the floor and primed for the bassbins.

RWINA011 – Swindle – Playground – 12″ Vinyl
London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown? On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions. The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

HRMN014 – Pavan – Holy Volt – 12″ Vinyl
You’re about to experience the first long-playing album of Pavan, the originator of Skweee-music. Skweee, also known as the synthetic Scandinavian funk, is a worldwide phenomena hailing originally from the frosty alleys of Stockholm and Helsinki. The raw, unpolished electronic funk tracks of this album were recorded in 2003-2006, when the term itself didn’t yet exist. Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue  synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Take a trip through the electro ragga of  ‘War’ and ‘Buttons’ and simmer down with the trippy krautness of ’1000 Years’. In this world overpopulated by soulless throwaway electronic music it’s very rare and touching to hear something as pure and honest as ‘Holy Volt’.

ZIQ292 – DJ Spinn – Man I Do It EP – 12″ Vinyl
Planet Mu up the game once more with their footwork crusade in 2011 with this excellent EP from one of the scene’s top producers, DJ Spinn, showing off his versatile styles across six tracks. ‘Man I Do It’ is also joint release with Chrissy Murderbot’s Loose Squares label, marking the start of a new Chicago-based but internationally-minded imprint dedicated to forward-facing footwork, jit and juke-house sounds. A footwork originator, Spinn started off as a dancer for the House-O-Matics crew in the mid-90s before following with DJing and production, working up to his current status as one of the scene’s most impor-tant figures. The EP mixes styles and sample sources to create a listenable but frenetic blend of tracks, from the more classic chanting juke of ‘Fall Back’, to the futuristic hip hop infused tracks like ‘Studio’ with its shimmering R&B sample and keys that remind the listener of classic jungle, to the off-key synths and vocoder of ‘Man I Do It’, which repeats and loops vocal phrases. The EP also includes the strangely relaxed ‘I Really Feel’, which subtly builds emotional soul strings and looped vocal samples into a barely-there melody, while ‘U Don’t Need’ and ‘Lol’ chop up 70s soul ballads into jagged, cubist shapes.

ZIQ288 – Boxcutter – Allele – 12″ Vinyl
A two tracker of freshness from Boxcutter, aka Barry Lynn, a questing producer who was taking stylistic chances and constantly mutating his dubstep-based music, long before anyone thought it was time to start discussing “post-dubstep”. This single precedes his new album ‘The Dissolve’, due out in April. ‘Allele’ builds from echoey drums into a tight juke-influenced drum pattern with lots of tight edits, before adding a vocal that hints at old school hardcore, wavering chords and drops, before the whole thing finally resolves into a restrained but ravey breakbeat. ‘Other People’ simply but effectively mixes hazy, live sounding 2-step drums with a lush bitter-sweet melody reminicent of the Drexciya offshoot TheOtherPeoplePlace, which glides subtly through a back-ground of shimmering effects and delays.

CIV019 – Om Unit – The Timps EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following his prized Joker rework, his inclusion on the hefty Fabric-curated ‘Elevator Music’ comp, his dope 7″ for the All City crew, and Corridor EP on Plastician’s Terrorhythm imprint – not to mention a slew of remixes – Om Unit joins the Civil Music stable alongside Starkey, Reso, dÉbruit, Drums of Death and Darling Farah. And yet again we see him pushing his sonic manifesto ever further. With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP. The Timps is Real Electro. Faceless, percussive, underground with a sci-fi feel. Dark, futuristic and dancefloor-oriented, punctuated with elements of 80’s Detroit Techno. Om Unit has blasted his sound into deep space, adding eerie electronic futurism to his niche blend of slow boogie, house, techno and hip-hop beats with those classic analogue synth lines. It nods to both the ever exciting and forever morphing instrumental beat scene and to the heavy flow of early pioneering Detroit techno via UR and the likes of Drexciya/Aux 88. The Timps sees Om Unit interfacing funk and futurism. Analogue bass lines are sequenced, arpeggiated and twisted to devastating effect. Synthetic riffs and atonal sound effects with heavy reverbs, delays and phasers drift along with eerie synthetic strings emphasizing the retro futuristic themes of the music. Remixes come from Frite Nites’ US beat maker and a one-to-watch in 2011, Salva, and Wagon Repair’s Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson who, along with brother, Matthew, is part of North American Techno’s first family. Salva’s rework of Prawn Cocktail pulses and throbs towards its intergalactic destination, with beats that speed along with accelerating urgency. Hrdvsion on the other hand takes The Timps and disconnects completely to float off alone into deep space with his epic, eerie and atomspheric reworking. This is Electro. Real Electro. Moody, minimal and 25 years on.

RED004 is finally here and it’s a absolute stomper of a release and one we are very proud to get out there! Ruckspin is a well respected musician within the dubstep scene and has had plenty of releases on a plethora of quality labels. We here feel this release encapsulates his own sound fully!

If ever there was one thing that was the single cause for the biggest ego explosion witnessed since Henry The Eighth formed the Church Of England and bellowed (whist gnawing on a leg of pork) “Off with her head” then this is it. This was what started it all off. Take a massive pop hit, dub it out until an inch of its life and from the ashes (to ashes) rose Duff Disco.

This sold out before the last Ice age, you can’t even get the rekid on discogs, you are more likely to find John Galliano in Jerusalem than you are a copy of this.

So, in a fit of generosity we have decided to make it available for you to download right here. Fill yer boots it will only be available for a short time.

New D&B Releases

OK022 – Meth & 2Shy – Treatment EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Meth has been working hard from his base in the South of the UK and has been creating a monster to unleash for Offkey Music. His initial solo releases for Offkey brought much attention and dance floor destruction. Quickly people realised that Meth was a force not to be underestimated. This is first full length project and Offkey are very happy to be releasing it. Meth has gathered a stellar cast for The Treatment EP – and that cast extends to 2shy, Manifest & Zo. Let us get treated. a) Meth & 2Shy (feat. Zo) – Front-line 2Shy lays down a vocal that leaves no confusion as to his intent, Meth lays down a killer kick snare and bass combo that brings the dance floor pain like only he knows how. The mysterious Zo slides onto the rhythm and underpins 2Shy’s presence on the track with her spoken word style, putting emphasis on the main hook effortlessly. Bongos bring up the pace on the chorus and before you know it your nodding your head and singing along to the ‘Front-line’. b) Meth, Manifest & 2Shy - RockForte Another artist is introduced to the fold is B-Boy Aficionado Manifest, south London authority on all things hip hop, the friendship with 2Shy has developed over years and now they feature on the knock bass killer ‘Rockforte’. A lilting dub vocal hangs over the breakdown signalling to a drop that just demands to be heard. A mid set roller that features enough edits and twists to keep the floor moving and keeps those gun fingers in the air. Mid bass growls all over the beat encouraging that all important screw face. All together now…. “Too heavyweight, too heavyweight” c) Meth & 2Shy – Not the one This is TRADEMARK 2shy, lets not get it twisted- infact there is no way you could “The bass drops, the place erupts, the crowd shouts FUCK OFF”.  When 2shy gets on a track- this is what you want. Aggravated, unshakeable and uncompromising. and again- just incase you wondered- “FUCK OFF”. Meth and 2shy show again that this may well be an ongoing collaboration- this EP is like a fist to the face, and ‘Not the one’ is the middle finger of said fist. d) Meth – Snake Eyes Meth closes proceedings with menacing Snake Eyes, A perfect title for the sinister track that whips midrange and suffocates you with low end. High hats and cymbals give movement to the drums and add a body move factor that will have the dance floor in eyes down, shock out mode no doubt!

GEN175005 – Switch Technique – Did / Exo – 12″ Vinyl
Switch Technique is the first artist to get a solo release on The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. So, what does this mean? It means that he has pulled off that which only very few can manage: he mixed hardcore kickdrums and drum & bass snares into what has become known as crossbreed.. and he made it sound good. DID is a deep dive into the mind of a psychopath, continuously hammered by gutwrenching kickdrum one hundred and seventy-five times per minute. EXO on the flip strips the crossbreed sound down to its bare exoskeleton. Go on, put on the exoskeleton and see for yourself!

RDR002 – Shameboy / Buscemi – Strobot – NETSKY rmx / Seaside – KG rmx – 12″ Vinyl
Murdock’s Radar Records launches an entirely new project, backed by some of the biggest names in drum&bass. Remixing a gang of classic Belgian non-dnb tracks by the likes of T99, Sound of Stereo, The Subs, Outlander and many more, they kick off the series with massive drum&bass reworks by none other than Netsky and KG. Drum & Bass’ new poster boy / boy wonder Netsky steps to the plate with the awesomeness that is his version of Shameboy’s classic electro banger ‘Strobot’, which was the first tune in his BBC Radio1 Essential Mix and has had a lot of exposure worldwide, as his Mix was voted 3rd best Essential Mix of the year 2010! The track has had spins by Andy C, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked and many more. KG ripped up Buscemi’s laidback house classic ‘Seaside’ and turned it into a dancefloor stomper. Opening with funky licks and classic breaks, he quickly rolls into a big jump-up monster, while still adding some vocals and rhodes piano for good measure. This one is being caned by Bassline Smith, Hamilton and Zen, to name just a few. Next up in the Radar Remixes series are contributions by Nymfo, Blame, Crystal Clear, Break, Marky & SPY and many more, so keep your eyes and ears pealed!

New D&B Promos

NOMIC006 – ASC – Starkwood / Reform – 12″ Vinyl
How and why these two tracks got pushed so far back in the autonomic release schedule is anyones guess. These two cuts are arguably ASC’s biggest to date (perhaps with the exception of ‘The Touch’), and two tracks that go a long way in defining the early sound of the autonomic movement. Finally they are going to see the light of day however, news that is sure to satisfy the baying hoards of hungry autonomic devotees that have waited so long and so patiently for their release. Starkwood is about dancefloor as Autonomic has ever gotten and probably will ever get – the pounding kick drum, coupled with the rhytmical, shuffling tribal percussion is infectious and guaranteed to get heads nodding and bodies moving. Reform is on a totally different vibe altogether with its breathy vocal snippets and detroit-ish synths giving it a silky, sultry feel.

DISTURBD024 – Zero Method – Atomizer / Marco Polo – 12″ Vinyl
Are you ready? I say.. ARE YOU READY?!?! Cause it’s time for some disturbance so you’d better get out your blast suits and your bulletproof vests. Zero Method is up for some rolling action with their tunes Atomizer & Marco Polo. Atomizer keeps it steady with perfectly pinpointed hi hats and drums, while the fierce bass line corrodes the foundations. This one packs a giant punch when executed properly, a serious tune for the techy minded people Next up is Marco Polo. This one will take you into the uncharted realms of neuro tech, no cheesy loudness business just straight up drums & basses. A chest rattler like nothing you ever heard before. Let this one teleport you into the deeper layers tech dnb has to offer. Fans of Silent Witness & Break better have checked this one out.

SUBTLE015 – Equinox – Meecha – 12″ Vinyl
Marlon Sterling aka Equinox cements his reputation as one of the D&B scenes most versatile, single-minded and dextrous beat manipulators on his latest in a long catalogue of brain-bending releases. The incendiary opener to a now infamous Equinox & Bailey set at Technicality in 2003 – “Meecha” finally sees the light of day. Originally completed in 1996 on an Amiga computer, the tune has lost none of its appeal 15 years on and it’s all the better for the audible crunch on the amen beats. This is one of the very best tunes from Equinoxs unreleased DAT library, and that’s saying something !! “So many people out here who make different styles of music you know – this music is something that they feel”. The repeated mantra at the opening of the flip side prepares you for an altogether different experience to what went before. Made in 2009 but with a definite nod to the oldskool style, “Your Love’s So Cold” is poignant, heartfelt D&B at its very best. The arrangement deftly builds to a beautiful swell of echoed vocals, icey-atmospherics and rolling beats and bass. Just like the A Side, this one is certain to defy fashions and trends and will be just as moving in 2024.

LS010 – Nphonix – Third Eye / False Flag – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Nphonix is celebrated as a paragon of stylistic diversity, constant progression and engineering craftsmanship amongst producers and listeners alike, with a sound and discography spanning everything from drum ‘n bass to hard techno. His latest release on the prestigious Lost Soul imprint is no exception to this standard. The A-side, ‘Third Eye’, descends like the bellow of some unfathomable machine coming to life, as frenetic techno stabs ride a ferocious shockwave of bass driven by bristling percussion. The flip, ‘False Flag,’ beckons with signature lushness and beautiful harmonies before propelling the listener back into a maelstrom of speaker destroying furor, with a stunning second drop sure to blow minds and rattle ribcages. Both pieces are tied together with the gritty yet crystalline production quality fans have come to expect from this stalwart innovator. This record is a testament to an artist’s uncompromising vision and a label’s reputation for impeccable taste.

DP049 – KGB – Ghetto Blasta 2010 / Hands Up – 12″ Vinyl
Estonian duo KGB step up for their debut release on Dub Police and they certainly aren’t pulling any punches. The production partnership hit you with two cuts of pure dance floor energy and impact that display their versatility and uncanny knowledge of how to get a crowd going. If you don’t know about KGB, you better get to know, as they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the rising stars in underground dance music. With plenty of tricks up their sleeves, there will be no stopping them in 2011! ‘Ghetto Blaster 2010’ draws upon different elements of underground bass music and melds them together in to something entirely unique and undeniably infectious. Taking the growling midrange bass-weight of dubstep and wiring it to a militant UK Funky drum march, KGB give the track an unstoppable momentum and punishing impact that is impossible to fight against – With an artillery that includes fire like this, it is no wonder they are quickly paving their path to the top. On the flipside, KGB deliver something very different. Pinned down by the tough half-step drum pattern, ‘Hands Up’ is all about the maniacal intertwining bass lines. When this track drops there is no denying its fierce, in-your-face power.

SUBWAY016 – Matt-U – Watchin U EP – 12″ Vinyl
Now.. We know A LOT of people have been waiting for this one so without further delays we present Matt-U’s highly anticipated ‘Watchin’U EP’ The title track ‘Watchin’U’ has been cained by the likes of Skream, 16Bit, Mensah, Von D, Madd, N-Type, Nicon, Akkachar, Noah D, The Others and who know who else.. Matt-U brings back the Dubstep sound from back in the day and updates it in a way only he can do. Reminding you a lot of the eski grime stuff but also a lot of the older DMZ vibes. A serious riddem in these times and an essential one for in the bag.. Turn the lights off put on your hood and skank out! LIME004 – Jade & Matt-U – Echoes – 12″ Vinyl
Lime Dubz keep on cracking with another too hot to handle release.. The long time duo Jade & Matt-U are reunited once again but not for getting back to their dnb roots. No Jade teams up with Matt-U for some highly technical Dubstep sounds.. Grindhouse on Jade’s Venom LP was just a taster of what was to come.. With Grindhouse still freshly engraved into our memories it’s time to unleash it on vinyl.. But now with 2 brand spanking new heavyweights on there.. Echoes is a sinister roller that’s all over the place bouncing left right up and down there’s no defending against this monster track.. Instead of going all tear out they crossover to a more medi hybrid sound that will suit well with Dubsteppers of all ages.. The last new track on the 12 is Pump. You guys are thinking it.. and we can confirm.. Yes this is a bass line monster if there ever was one. Grab all of your PA’s boys and girls and turn up the volume to max cause its only happening when your chest starts rattlin..

CIV017 – Reso – Valken EP / War Machine – 12″ Vinyl
Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow. Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy. Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.

NONPLUS011 – Lowtec – Wonderkidd / Looser – 12″ Vinyl
The ball is certainly rolling in 2011 and next up is a treat from Germanys Lowtec. Founder of highly respected label Workshop he makes his UK label debut on Nonplus Records with two fresh cuts of analogue goodness. a) Lowtec ‘Wonderkidd’ ‘Wonderkidd’ greets us with a vocal sample that morphs keys with a low-fi piano chord before the discordant groove of the main riff comes into effect. Analogue synths dance around the deep chord groove with early detroitisms flexing between a repeating bleeped out pattern. Hypnotic key stabs sink you deeper into the tune that shows us why Lowtec is one of Berlin’s top underground button pushers. aa) Lowtec ‘Looser’ The warm hiss of anaolgue beats starts off the excellent AA tune ‘Looser’. Dabs of a.m radio vocals progress the tune amongst a myriad of discreet electronic bleeps that escalate and scatter around the rhythm. Coarsely sampled ‘Shakir-like’ string chords provide the main sequence to set off this excellent tune. One for the deeper heads out there.

HENCH023 – MRK1 – Dirty Dubstep Music – 12″ Vinyl
Having been perfecting his production skills for the last 10 years, Mrk 1 is no newcomer to the world of bass-led music. A member of Manchester’s infamous ‘Virus Syndicate’, he’s become internationally recognised as a huge dubstep talent. So when HENCH got the opportunity, they jumped at the chance to sign two typically down-right dark and dirty numbers from the man like Mrk 1… A. DIRTY DUBSTEP MUSIC ‘I want girls, drink, drugs and music’ aren’t the type of lyrics you’re going to find on a Cliff Richard record. And this track is about as far away as you can get from that! Get ready for a relentlessly switching bass rhythm that takes you every which way direction. The vibe on this production is one of darkest dread and fits perfectly at home in a dark & dingy club at some ungodly hour of the morning. Mrk 1 has carefully crafted space around the bass-riff to make sure that nothing takes away from it hitting you where it hurts. AA. SHOUT Mrk 1 guides us in with an innocent facade; a playful vocal coupled with a light-tempoed high hat. But as things draw nearer to the drop the creeping low-end in the background makes it clear that other intentions are in mind. When that twisted bassline drops ‘Shout’ takes on a far more forbidding atmosphere. Mrk 1 has created something that bass-heads have been swinging from the rafters for every time, screaming for the rewind. Take heed of our words when we tell you that ‘Shout’ is going to cause damage!

RS1102 – Blawan – Bohla EP – 12″ Vinyl
R&S welcome another newcomer to the family. With only one release behind him on Hessle Audio and a wicked remix for Warp (The Hundred In The Hands) Blawan finds his new tracks in demand from the likes of James Blake, Jackmaster, Untold, Ben UFO, Ramadanman and Pariah. The title track is already creating a bit of a stir from its inclusion in a few high profile dj sets, but all three tracks raise the game for this young producer. The whole ep is filled with an honest, infectious energy, just like his dj sets. You can’t pigeonhole this as ‘post’ anything, its pure, stripped down, club music. Sometimes drums, bass and acid is all you need.

OTE014 – Indigo – Zero Point E.P. – 12″ Vinyl x 2
On the Edge are back with a new EP from Indigo! He first made his debut for On the Edge early 2009 with a collaboration with Synkro called “Alabama” and “Turning”. Then Indigo went on to produce 2 solo singles for On the Edge 8 and 9 that I would describe as true masterpieces. Dubby, Techno, industrial and gritty to the core! If you haven’t checked any of those releases out, then I would say “Not Alone”, “Home” and “Cosmos” are all well worth a listen. He is one of the most talented producers I have ever heard and extremely diverse in production styles. He never sticks to formulas and his musical knowledge and passion for diversity really shines though in his music. “Zero point” is a mix of wonderfully produced soundscapes that show us what Indigo is all about. DJ Support: Scuba, Russell Deeks , D Bridge , Reso , Spam Chop, DFRNT, Rob Booth Walsh, Dj Rum Distal, Truth.

SMOKE013 – Lewis B – Dark Coulds – 12″ Vinyl
If you’re into a bit of Dubstep with a Jazzy twist, then I’m sure Lewis B is a name that you’re very familiar with. It’s a style of Dubstep that is really taking shape and Lewis is riding that ever increasing moment that surrounds this beautiful sound. Lewis has such a deep knowledge of Jazz, ranging from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery, all the way to the more modern twist on Jazz, like Jazzanova and Quantic. “Dark Clouds” screams out Lewis B and reminds me a little of “Pinball”, but in so many ways extremely different and unique. Then we have Synkro on the remix duties, but a first for Smokin Sessions, it’s a D+B remix!!!! The sound seems to amalgamate genres where BPM are merely a speed, but has a definite distinct flavor. I think its such a refreshing sound and love the minimal deepness that the genre brings to electronic music. DJ Support: D Bridge, LTJ Bukem, DFRNT, Dj Rum Reso Loxy, Alexander Nut, 16bit, Pathaan, Tayo, Kissy Sell out, Shimon, Distal, Rob Booth, Freq Nasty, DJ Flight, Nerm (BBC Radio 1) and Akira Kiteshi!

SR013 – JFB ft. Christina Nicola – Rise / Ruffneck Rmx – 12″ Vinyl
JFB, the Brighton-based master turntablist, DMC champion and coordinator (alongside Beardyman) of the legendary Battlejam events returns to Sludge Records with yet another speaker-bustin’ musical onslaught. If you liked Duckjam and his previous collaborations with Ed Solo then this release of full-on phat beats and dub bass pressure will blow your minds, and your eardrums. Main cut ‘Rise’ teases you in with atmospheric tones and eerie pads before the angelic voice of Christina Nicola takes you into a dreamy state of euphoria, only for a big beefy knee-trembling bassline to come crashing in and drag you kicking and screaming into hedonistic oblivion. This is one of those tracks that are designed for those special 4am moments that make you hug speakers and pull bassfaces so intense you’ll end up chewing off your own eyebrows. On the flip is something a bit special for all the skanking soldiers. ‘Ruffneck’ is a track by Elijah MC, a street entertainer from the south of England who uses his beatboxing skills and vocal looping tools to create dub-influenced songs that range from trip hop through to drum ‘n’ bass. The track here is a firing ragga-flavoured dubstep remix from our man JFB and it is H.E.A.V.Y. Showing off his highly accomplished production skills from start to finish, the skippy beats, earthquake-inducing subs and roots-style vocals are perfectly combined to make this one a dead cert for sheer dancefloor devastation, and prove once again why he’s one of the most sought after and entertaining artists on the scene.

Om Unit – The Timps EP [Civil Music]

Posted 03 March 2011 | By | Categories: video | No Comments

Following his prized Joker rework, his inclusion on the hefty Fabric-curated ‘Elevator Music’ comp, his dope 7″ for the All City crew, and Corridor EP on Plastician’s Terrorhythm imprint – not to mention a slew of remixes – Om Unit joins the Civil Music stable alongside Starkey, Reso, dÉbruit, Drums of Death and Darling Farah. And yet again we see him pushing his sonic manifesto ever further. With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP.

INTERVIEW:
Civil Music asked Om Unit to explain himself.

Where did you create The Timps?
At my home studio in the wee hours after a night out.

What did you have in mind when you made it?
Not a whole lot that was coherent in earth languages I’d imagine.

What were you hoping to achieve musically / sonically ?
I suppose most of the music I make I will take quite a bit of time getting the raw elements together and because I like to listen to the same tracks a lot I can be sure that it sounds interesting enough to go back to. I like spatial relationships within sound too. I see pictures quite vividly when I’m creating stuff, so it’s important that there is a clear picture. In this case it’s quite mathematical. For me electro is quite a pure display of harmonic rhythm, there’s no doubt it’s about mathematical structuring, which explains the spiritual angle a lot of these artists have. It’s about a purposeful and simple construct which is designed to engage your mind in a certain way, similar to sacred geometry.
With The Timps and Prawn Cocktail I chose to use that structure and basically jam with it and tried to keep it as loose as I could so it didn’t sound too cold.
It might be a repetitive experience and I’m aware that it’s not “current” sounding in terms of modern dance music, like it doesn’t break down into an 808 work out or have big saw synths on it anything, but I don’t want to try and be anything I’m not, which is why a lot of my output is varied, it’s just made in the moment for what I’m feeling right then and there.

What’s the meaning behind the title track / EP title?
Anyone with a Roland Alpha Juno 1 will know!

Talk us through the other tracks…
Prawn Cocktail was made in 2010 specifically for this release. I’d been sitting on The Timps for ages as a personal piece and when I decided to put it out there, Prawn Cocktail came out of a series of sketches I had for the flip. The alternative version showed up at some point when I found some lost files, and was then edited for this release.

What else is going on / what’s up next?
Remixes for Illum Sphere, Daedelus, Om’mas Keith of Sa-Ra, Pixelord, Stateless, Shigeto, Comma, Take, and Naive Machine. And plenty more beats chuggin’ as we speak.
