SECOPS015 – Seba & Method One – Heavy Traffic / Mr Downstairs – 12″ Vinyl
Secret Operations enter the new year with “Heavy traffic”. A heavy roller from Sweden’s finest Seba teaming up with San Franciscos finest Method One. Heavy bassline, steppy beat, and chopping amen breaks is what this track is all about. The flipside “Mr. downstairs” is more laidback, and draws the memories back to the Good Looking days, back in 96-98 era. Watch out for secops 016. This time Seba collaborates with Finnish Producer/DJ Physics. It’s already got support from Storm on her Ministry of sound show.

DETAIL005 – Lynx & Hellrazor / Lynx Ft. Spikey Tee – Dirty Red / 5am Soul City – 12″ Vinyl
Detail 005 is the next single from label boss Lynx. Dirty Red is a bit of a monster and has been getting huge support from Marky, Marcus Intalex, Nu:Tone Bailey and Shy FX. The intro builds with sci fi strings that progress like a train hurtling down the tracks out of control. It reaches a crescendo with the sound of squealing brakes and drops into a menacing talk box bassline and Lynx’s sharp 2 step beats.5.a.m Soul City is a collaboration between Lynx and London born, Sydney based soul vocalist, Spikey Tee. The track has the vibe of walking through the backstreets of a city in the early hours of the morning. Subdued chords, scattered pianos and rustles of the streets and distant cars litter this liquid vocal track.

DSM017 – Nether – True Believer / True Believer (Marcus Intalex’s Dancehall Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
The Deep Soul Music mission of releasing high quality drum & bass continues with this the 17th vinyl release. Australian Nether has already graced DSM twice with the laid back grooves of ‘Lust’, which featured on the ‘Intelligent Systems Volume One EP’, and ‘Skeletons’, which was included in the exclusive DSM x Lacoste project. With Marcus Intalex on remix duties for the AA side, this is one very special slice of wax. This 12” is an important milestone for DSM. It lays down a marker and is a signal of intent that Deep Soul Music is no longer a fledgling label fighting to gain recognition and acceptance within drum & bass. Rather, it has grown to be one of d&b’s leading lights, one of the most respected labels within the global scene, and a point of reference and inspiration for the multitude of other dj’s, producers and labels currently operating in the genre. With their place at drum & bass’s top table now secure, and with a close working relationship developed with a group of exceptionally talented artists such as Anile, Sam KDC,Synth Sense, Triad and June Miller, the only way for DSM is up. The AA side sees the Soul:R boss and all round round drum & bass legend flip things 180 degrees for his remix. The abstract, almost introspective feel of the original is removed in favour of straight up feel good summer time dancefloor vibes. Big bouncy bass stabs and a crisp rolling drum break aim the tune firmly at the ravers and its been a firm favourite of many an a-lister over the past few months looking to amp up the vibes and energy levels of their sets.

Originally released in 2001 on Phantom Audio, ten years later and the duo bring Spirit’s ‘Three In One’ to a new generation, keeping that irresistibly funky flow while toughening up the groove with some killer bass work and thumping beats, already gracing the sets of Dj Hype, Goldie, Storm, Raiden, TC1 and a host of others. Spirit himself gets deep and dirty on ‘Juggernaut’ with it’s sparse drums, deep subs and growling synths, creating a groove that just can’t be stopped…. DJ Mag 9/10

Co-writer of one of the labels biggest ever selling releases (‘The Other Part Of Me’ with Trei), the recent UK migrant comes with what we feel is his best work to date. ‘Reason Being’ defines the term roller, and with its euphoric middle section mixes the ruffness of its driving rhythm with the silky smoothness of its melodic overcoat. ‘Helpless’ is another tech funk masterpiece from Dose which has been competing strongly for A side status since we signed this 12″. DJ support from Klute, Teebee, Spectrasoul, Marky, Break, Logistics, Phace, State Of Mind and many more. Watch for the forthcoming Dose full length album in late 2011 on Samurai Music

EXITCD007 – They Live – Cancel Standard – CD
Exit Records bring a new project to the table with a collaboration between Consequence and Joe Seven. Consequence made his debut on Exit in 2009 with his highly acclaimed album ‘Live For Never’ capturing the attention of electronica fans world-wide with his organic and unique take on Drum n Bass. Also having been a staple part of the Autonomic camp since day one, he’s slowly but surely developing his sound and delving deeper into the unknown. This time he teams up with another new Exit artist Joe Seven (who has an imminent solo single) and together they have created the They Live alias to showcase what happens when these two minds meet in the studio. The album is very much intended to be listened to in the order it has been presented, as a whole body of music meant to capture your senses and lead you across a soundscape of atmospheres, textures, differing tempos and a variety of percussion elements. In the same way as a silent movie can stimulate your sense of hearing, Cancel Standard does the opposite like an imageless movie, giving you the soundtrack and letting you imagine your own visual elements. Each track sets its own scene that is part of the bigger picture, creating a body of music that can offer the listener detachment from their immediate surroundings and escapism into an alternate reality.

DP048 – D1 Ft. Jenna G – Floods Of Emotions / Bleeps To Broadway – 12″ Vinyl
D1 has once again come up with the goods, and delivered two brilliant old skool-influenced dancefloor tracks. ‘Flood Of Emotions’ featuring renowned vocalist Jenna G, showcases D1’s trademark melodic sensibility, while maintaining the tough drums and pure bass pressure that makes UK bass music so exciting and impactful. Driven by a classic hardcore break, the track penetrates right through you while the uplifting melody, complimented by Jenna’s vocals, washes over you beautifully. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ takes similar rave influences, this time moulding them around tough, stripped down drums and futuristic bleeps. ‘Bleeps To Broadway’ is also accompanied by the 130 mix, which opens up the track, slowing the groove down and giving it some extra room to breathe.D1 was one of the earliest proponents of the emerging dubstep sound, and has remained one of the scene’s most creative and exciting producers ever since. Responsible for a number of seminal dubstep tracks, he has been a long-time Dub Police affiliate and has had support from all of the biggest players in the scene, also releasing tracks on esteemed labels like Tempa, Soulja and Dub Files. He continues to push his sound forward and evolve with each and every release, and never fails to surprise! Judging on the pure quality of these tracks, 2011 is set to be a big year for D1…

BUILD005 – Baobinga & Hyetal – Anything For Now / Trouble – 12″ Vinyl
We kick off 2011 with the latest collaborative plate of Bristol-based Build badness – label boss Baobinga cooking up two ‘what-do-you-call-it’ tracks with one of 2010s breakthrough producers, the man they call Hyetal. Starting 2010 with a huge Punch Drunk release alongside Shortstuff, Hyetal further refined his sound through collaborations with Peverelist, and the massive Prince-tastic anthem ‘Phoenix’ on Orca – which can be found sitting proudly at number 36 in FACT Magazine’s ‘Tracks Of The Year’ run-down. With some big releases due in 2011, and more Velour beats (with Julio Bashmore) on the way, we’re very excited to have him involved in a Build release. The A side here, ‘Anything For Now’, is a perfect example of when collaborations work perfectly – and finished every set of Ginz’s recent US tour to rapturous response. Through the course of an ever-evolving arrangement, tough dancefloor drums drive epic synth lines and melodies forward to a point of ecstatic release, all tied together with powerful sub-bass and a staggering level of detail.Meanwhile, the AA, ‘Trouble’, could almost be dancehall from alpha-centuri, as again, a cornucopia of glistening chords, synthetic steel drums and swaggering, swinging drums proper the dancefloor through spiky, bruising bass-weight punches. As a staple of both producers’ sets, ‘Trouble’ has been shown to do the business without ever resorting to cliche.

PSQ005 – Furesshu – Lucid / Lifted (Shifted Remix) / All I Want – 12″ Vinyl
PSQ005 is Furesshu’s follow up 12 inch release to last year’s trio of tracks (PSQ002) that garnered attention from Ben Klock, Sigha and Marcel Dettmann, who continues to play out his music regularly. Furesshu’s bleak and powerful remix of L-OW (PSQ003) has been criminally under appreciated, and now his second 12 inch on Project Squared (PSQ005) will showcase a more House influenced, but still Techno at its core, sound with ‘Lucid’ and ‘All I Want’. Both tunes work around short vocal snippets, employing them to melodic, repetitive effect within a sparse but subtly evolving soundstage. Providing a remix of ‘Lucid’, Shifted converts the House tinged original into straight up, heavy hitting Techno, with relentless kick drum, melodic stabs and the occasional clap. Shifted has made a big impact with his debut 12″ on Mote Evolver and he has a stack of 12s lined up for 2011 on some very solid labels. Similarly, with a forthcoming release on the new Commune label in early 2011 and more to follow, this is going to be a big year for Furesshu.

RS1103 – Lone – Echo Locations EP (LIMITED EDITION CLEAR VINYL DOUBLEPACK) – 12″ Vinyl x 2
With Coreshine Voodoo, wunderkind Lone makes his R&S debut and we’re super hyped to have him along for the ride! With these 6 tracks we’ve got a honing of the styles we saw on display on Emerald Fantasy Tracks with a stronger focus on the floors of Detroit & Chicago, which sits so perfectly in the newly invigorated R&S camp. Known to his friends and family as Matt Cutler, Lone started life as a bedroom child producer in Nottingham experimenting with Hip Hop, early 90s Hardcore, Techno and Electronic music for years before dropping his lush, dream-hop début opus ‘Lemurian’ to critical acclaim. A remix of Bibio for Warp followed, whilst Werk Discs released the follow up album ‘Ecstasy & Friends’. Swerving the dream-hop moniker attributed to earlier work, this EP picks up where last year’s stunning album “Emerald Fantasy Tracks“ left off. Distilling so many different ‘labels’ and ‘influences’ into just 9 tracks, EFT explored the heavier sounds of Chicago house & Detroit Techno through to early Warp releases and 90′s London rave/hardcore with cinematic overtones. Aimed at destroying parties whilst staying true to his beautiful, nostalgic melodic style essentially. The complex rhythms and drum programming and huge stabs at the drop make Coreshine Voodoo the pick of the tracks for full dancefloor distortion. It’d be just at home in the Motor City as in the steely English North, whilst finding time to jam with the drum machines of Ceephax or Luke Vibert… and yet it’s still so characteristically Lone.On Explorers we delve deeper into the Detroit flavor drawing up comparisons with Carl Craig and Model 500. With a true understanding of melody that permeates through the track whilst still using the great washes of sound and looped-up, effected vocals this has end-of-nighter written all over it.Further down the line through this stunning EP, Dolphin focuses it’s swathes of sound via a simple but effective synth line with washes of reverbed melody from all sides. The darker bleep core of Rapid Racer reminds me of last summer when Mr. Jeff Mills tore the roof off Space with just his 909. This time though Lone’s managed to sneak a melody in, alongside some off-kilter vocal sample re-imaginings. It’s like all my favourite types of electronic music squeezed into a single track. God knows what he’s making this on but it sounds like it was made in a grimy Detroit warehouse, circa 1984 then rinsed through Castle Morton, on through the legendary Warp rave in Battersea Power Station, back through the Balearic isle and over to the Rotters Golf Club.Blossom Quarter tones thing down briefly with Mr Cutler’s Boards-esque constructions sneaking in, till the Casio-core lets loose. You’re looking for a more complex description but let’s be honest, it’s as if Network Records were have a head on battle with Planet E whilst Boards adjudicated. Approaching Rainbow rounds the EP off into more mellow territories. We need to rest those feet after those first 5 tracks anyway! A truly special EP from a rising star of the further reaches of electronic sonic scopes.

HRMN015 – Easy and the Center of Universe – Pythagoras Falafel Calamity – 12″ Vinyl
Easy and the Center Of The Universe we already know from their recent Flogsta Danshall 7 inch release and some skweee compilers, remember Legend Of Selda on Skweee Tooth?!!?!?This new release on Harmonia is as the previous ones infected with Arabian soundbites. We recognize the details from our nights in the Medina of Marrakesh, we slip into our caftan, smoke the water pipe and drink mint tea, and are bodypoppin’ like an Egyptian.. No kiddin’, this record is so imaginative and so true to its style that you can’t go any other way. Details of the percussion on Halloumi are so good with the details in the orchestration (references to Uom Kalthoum records come to mind) the pitch and modulation wheels used intensive. mnWith this release Easy & Center Of The Universe prooves again that skweee is one of the most evolving styles at the moment. NONPLUSLP002PART2 – LOL – LOL Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

WHEELYDEALY014 – DJ Madd – Battle / Secrets – 12″ Vinyl
N Types label coms correct each and every time. Budapest born but now Bristol based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles – mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd – known to his parents as Peter Simon – manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days In his own words when speaking to the Sonic Router blog last year: “appreciating both Rusko and Martyn at the same time is not a crime,”

NONPLUS012 – Boddika – You Tell Me / Breezin – 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus+ label owners Instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with Al Bleek working under his Boddika alias and Kid Drama as Jon Convex. Here we have Boddika’s first output on Nonplus+ after his debut on Naked Lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming EP on Swamp 81. His work has been supported by DJs across the board such as Benji B, Oneman, Scuba, Shy FX, Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Leofah, Skream and Zed Bias amongst many others.a) Boddika ‘You Tell Me’ ‘You Tell Me’ takes us back to the 80s with its electro tinged thumping drums and freaky synths. What at first seems to be a pretty straightforward track slowly mutates into an ugly beast with its pitch bent lead and warping drum grooves that slowly swing so far out and eventually re-sync with each significant transition. Not for the seasick.aa) Boddika ‘Breezin’ On the flip Boddika provides another striped back dancefloor warmer but here he comes with a 4×4 drum pattern. With very few elements he exploits them all to their limits and the track moves with an everchanging undercurrent of acid bass coated with subtle synth melodies that work their way around the bass in a mesmerizing arrangement. Another example of Boddika’s talent for working sound to maximum effect and keeping it simple but effective.

DKX004 – Gerry Read – Patterns / Last Time – 12″ Vinyl
Gerry Read’s much loved “Patterns” finally receives a limited edition vinyl run backed by new track “Last Time” – available exclusively on vinyl. “Patterns” brought euphoria to a dark dub/2-step sound and has been rinsed by forward-looking selectors like Untold, Starkey & Mumdance – and played on the world’s smarter radio stations, Rinse FM, Sub FM, Subjam & Fevah.New track “Last Time” is a slab of reverse-engineered, 2011 house music. A stepping woodblock rhythm pins down plaintive vocals as a spooked synth line controls the release. In any one else’s hands that would add up to dark vibes, but Gerry crafts it to deliver bittersweet euphoria of the best kind. Expect to hear this track everywhere, from grimey backrooms in Bristol to Ibiza beach bars. Since receiving widespread acclaim for his first release from the likes of FACT, Sonic Router and other forward-thinking blogs, Gerry is now working on a number of different label projects, and collaborations with up and coming artists. Gerry recently returned to the UK after spending several years in Australia. The separation from the UK bass scene helped him craft his uniquesound, while retaining a deep understanding of his musical influences. Sonically, comparisons range anywhere from Actress to James Blake, with a love for dusty, crushed, vintage sound. But few other producers can combine sonic warmth with real dancefloor energy. Dark Arx Recordings is a home for artists on the fringes of the dubstep/bass/techno scenes.

PPRO14VSY – Photek – 101 (Boddika Remix) / This City – 12″ Vinyl
Full colour sleeve pressed on 180 gram Vinyl. Regarded by many as the finest electronic producer of his generation, the mysterious LA-based Photek enjoyed considerable success throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with his own mutant breed of jungle and drum’n’bass. After a four-year hiatus from releasing music (and just over ten years since his last LP ‘Solaris’), the legendary Photek is back with a new sound and brand new 4-track EP – an occasion definitely worth the wait. Never one to stand still, Photek’s enviable reputation has been built not just on his ability to inspire both his fans and peers over the years through his productions but also through his knack of reinventing his sound time and time again. With his early work (under a variety of aliases) proving hugely popular in clubs, it wasn’t until ’97 when he released his now-classic debut album ‘Modus Operandi’ that he truly arrived, defying both his existing fan base and the Jungle scene as he pioneered a new alternative to the big room rollers that defined the era at that time. Three years later he surprised again, embracing Chicago acid-house and techno for his second artist album ‘Solaris’ in 2000, working with the brilliant Robert Owens on the classic single ‘Mine To Give’. Further EP’s followed after the turn of the millennium, as well as a number of film score credits (including The Matrix), but in 2011 he has once again shifted the gears, re-inspired by UK bass music and the current crop of young producers – Photek has a new sound to share with the world. Multiple Radio Plays by: Benji B, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam, Nick Grimshaw, Greenmoney, Jon Kennedy.

DP052 – Emalkay – Fabrication / Massive – 12″ Vinyl
Emalkay continues his unstoppable run of form with the new single ‘Fabrication’, a track that is as addictive as it is hard-hitting. Drifting in on the soft siren call of the vocals, Emalkay filters the bass through the intro, building to the drop of the catchy, mutating bassline. The organic skitter of hi-hats gives the sparse drum pattern its swing, leaving the bass to do the damage! On the flip ‘Massive’ cranks up the pressure with a serious head down steppa. The razor sharp bassline cuts through the track like a knife, held down only by the stomp of the drums, while the ebb and flow of the pads gives an underlying eerie atmosphere to the track.2010 was a huge year for Emalkay. Having been thrown in to the limelight by the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ towards the end of 2009, he has continued to penetrate through the scene with a series of quality releases like ‘Crusader / Power Tool’ and ‘Solid State / Battle Suit’. With no sign of slowing down any time soon, he continues to cement his place as one of the most exciting producers around with each new track. Stepping into 2011 with the support of the biggest DJs on the scene, some seriously heavyweight artillery and an album due out later this year on Dub Police, there really is no stopping Emalkay at the moment!

NDLTD002 – Unquote – Cold Tenderness (Original Mix) / Cold Tenderness (DFRNT Remix) – 10″ Vinyl
Unquote is the guise used by Russian electronic music producer Vsevolod Ermakov. He joins a trend of exciting new producers from eastern europe delivering a new interpretation of experimental drum & bass and dubstep. He has, to date, clocked up releases on some of the scenes most forward thinking labels, including a single on Med School and releases on Hospital and Influenza Media. He has also been tipped as ‘one to watch’ by London Electricity on the acclaimed Hospital Podcast. Cold Tenderness is, as the title suggests, an emotional and melancholy piece of ambient dubstep. It’s stirring synths and haunting vocals create what is, quite simply, a breathtaking track that you will want to play again and again. The flipside see’s edinburgh’s finest DFRNT on remix duty giving us a glimpse of what is to come on his forthcoming extended player on Nu Directions later in the spring.

GCW01V – Mudkid – Loik – 10″ Vinyl
10″ candy coloured vinyl. Hand stamped & numbered in the Cottage (350 run) Cut@Loud NO MP3/ Digital – heavy duty clear poly sleeve. Mudkid is Franklin De Costa – Support from Luke Solomon & Ewan PearsonMudkid always holds the fort when it comes to large girthed funk jams. Loik comes with a toe curling array of mechanical energy and stomping house plushness, all the while acting as a constant foray into your subconscious dealings. Franklin’s got wigging out down to a tee without ever loosing touch of keeping things moving. Based around an audible struggle of sorts, side A rides complex rhythms and simmering restraint. It’s tight yet seemingly loose flow has it’s roots firmly dug up from dub terra firma. A buttock clenching accolade to ruff skanking and ritualistic bounce, chiefing the floor as an ambassador to going mental. Acting as a tug of war of thoughts, side b dawdles with dreamy lushness. A soothing chafe to the celebral bounds on with glittering effect. A wobbly slur to Mudkid’s trademark rumble. Why don’t you open up yours senses and succumb to his meanderings. Even though all the nuts have been gone since December there’s still plenty to go round on this one.
