EXIT027 – Joe Seven – Restionaire / The Cous – 10″ Vinyl
Joe Seven makes his debut on Exit records with the second of the Exit 10” series of which the first featured his ‘They Live’ collaboration partner Consequence. Here we have an insight into what Joe Seven is capable of on his own and the individual contributions to the They Live project become more apparent.‘Restionaire’ First off we have the eerie ambience of ‘Restionaire’ with its glitchy and heavily swung beats layered with an underlying 4/4 kick for this slice of minimal techno. Pads and melodies creep in and out amongst distorted sound effects and electric percussion that keep the vibe very extra terrestrial.‘The Cous’ offers more of a stripped back and melodic but still quite robotic sound. No doubt influenced by the legendary Kraftwerk legacy, this track has all the retro analogue qualities that make for a great piece of listening and with its catchy synth bass hook and classic drum machine beats it’s hard to resist some robo body popping.

DKX004 – Gerry Read – Patterns / Last Time – 12″ Vinyl
Gerry Read’s much loved “Patterns” finally receives a limited edition vinyl run backed by new track “Last Time” – available exclusively on vinyl. “Patterns” brought euphoria to a dark dub/2-step sound and has been rinsed by forward-looking selectors like Untold, Starkey & Mumdance – and played on the world’s smarter radio stations, Rinse FM, Sub FM, Subjam & Fevah.New track “Last Time” is a slab of reverse-engineered, 2011 house music. A stepping woodblock rhythm pins down plaintive vocals as a spooked synth line controls the release. In any one else’s hands that would add up to dark vibes, but Gerry crafts it to deliver bittersweet euphoria of the best kind. Expect to hear this track everywhere, from grimey backrooms in Bristol to Ibiza beach bars. Since receiving widespread acclaim for his first release from the likes of FACT, Sonic Router and other forward-thinking blogs, Gerry is now working on a number of different label projects, and collaborations with up and coming artists. Gerry recently returned to the UK after spending several years in Australia. The separation from the UK bass scene helped him craft his uniquesound, while retaining a deep understanding of his musical influences. Sonically, comparisons range anywhere from Actress to James Blake, with a love for dusty, crushed, vintage sound. But few other producers can combine sonic warmth with real dancefloor energy. Dark Arx Recordings is a home for artists on the fringes of the dubstep/bass/techno scenes.

IME025 – Outboxx – Kate Libby’s / Bertie’s Groove – 12″ Vinyl
The first Immerse release of 2011 sees the label taking on a fresh approach while retaining the same atmospherics that have made it an essential fixture in the Bristol music canon. Outboxx are made up of Jacob Martin and Matt Lambert, and their sound is rooted in groovy, analogue house music. With an emphasis on jamming, there’s a loose, live feel to these tracks that has an instant appeal but drags you deeper with each listen. ‘Kate Libby’ kicks off on a swung beat and warm pads, before dropping down to P-funk bass and sparse synth flourishes. ‘Bertie’s Groove’ places jazzy Rhodes playing at the front of the mix with a classic drum machine workout ticking away in the background. This is soulful, authentic house music with not a clinical MIDI pattern in earshot. Despite coming from a different angle, the Outboxx tracks slip neatly into the Immerse legacy thus far, pointing the way for a year filled with more of the spacious, haunting club music the label has become renowned for.

HENCH027 – Eddie K & Minus Ft. Beezy – Activate / Dark Ages – 12″ Vinyl
From Eddie K’s roots making drum & bass for the Stereotype label and Minus’ relative newcoming to the world of bass-led music; this duo were responsible for one of the biggest Dubstep smashers of 2010, ‘Serial Killa’. Continuing on this fruitful collaboration, this is the latest offering from the pair who have had their track played on the biggest, baddest systems across the world sincelast Summer.A: Activate – Corralling HENCH’s resident demonic MC, Beezy, ‘Activate’ enters with a foreboding combination of tones and lyrics. But be warned, here comes a monster-bassline. This will literally drag you out of your chair like some possessed robot – driving, bashing, and twisting every which way. Re-enter Beezy with further sardonic rhymes and yet another dosage of the evil baseline. ‘Activate’ was created for subs that can handle their low-end frequencies. Use with caution – this is serious ammunition.AA: Dark Ages – Once again making use of Beezy’s evil overtones, there is never any doubt which direction that ‘Dark Ages’ is heading in. A subversive, chiseling bass-riff that has your eyebrows frowning and you nodding your head in time. The sparse kick-snare combo leaves ample room for the low-end to work its voodoo in creating an evil release. Eddie K and Minus have quickly worked up a knack of delivering forthright & disrespectful club-driven tracks.

DBOOT013 – Downliners Sekt – Meet The Decline – 12″ Vinyl
The ever-shady Downliners Sekt will complete their trilogy of EPs for Barcelona’s Disboot label with the release of Meet the Decline. Following the excellent Hello Lonely, Hold the Nation and We Make Hits, Not the Public, a pair of EPs that took the formally post-rock duo and repositioned them somewhere between Autechre and Mount Kimbie (or, as our friends at Boomkat said, “Mount Kimbie on crack”), Meet the Decline promises “soul-filled gospel hymns for a technological apocalypse … Mutated guitars wind their way around hypnotic digital syncopations and ghostly choral textures, uplifting and menacing in equal parts.” Bit like Christmas in the FACT office, then. Meet the Decline is penciled in for an April release date, but you know how these things go.http://www.factmag.com/2011/03/15/downliners-sekt-get-ready-to-meet-the-decline/

VA002 – Dubtek – Fever – 12″ Vinyl
Kyle Schab, aka Dubtek, has been an instrumental player in bringing the dubstep sound to the Seattle underground for the last five years. As part of the Shift Crew, Dubtek’s been pushing the dubstep sound since the mid ’00′s, first as a producer and later as a DJ. In each role, he’s seen critical and popular acclaim as his releases have been featured on a host of cutting edge dubstep labels including Shift Recordings, Trust in Music, Terminal Dusk, and Paradise Lost and has had his tunes supported by a who’s who of dubstep players including Triage, Droid Sector, Matta, and Boot. In addition he’s become a Seattle fan favorite with an ear for the underground and a big bass sound, as he’s shared billing with a host of dubstep elite including N-Type, Caspa, 12th Planet, Babylon System, and SPL to name a few. On his inaugural release for Vicious Audio Dubtek stays true to his roots, creating deep bass soundscapes with a heavy sound while managing to stay intelligent and away from anything that could be described as ‘bro’. Fever plods along through the night, as light siren stabs and ghostly ambience create a sense of space between the kick-snare attacks and the beastly bass line. On The Tennant, things start off harmlessly enough but get decidedly darker as a heavy, chugging bass line pounds along at a steady clip.

Picking up where his 2010 Keysound single ‘In Some Pattern’ left off, it sees the versatile pirate vibes-imbibed producer take purple synths and twist them into dizzying contortions. A rude drop roots the track firmly in UK soundsystem culture while a tough steppers beat drives it forward.Sully is one of the most treasured yet under-celebrated producers in the UK today. Finding a space between 2step’s swing, dubstep’s edge and breakstep’s drums, his versatile productions perfected styles and vibes four or five years before the ‘future garage’ movement had begun to investigate them. As the rest of the bass family are now embracing house, 2step, UK funky, purple synths and juke, Sully looks to have a big 2011 ahead of him. ‘Toffee Apple’ is the perfect sweetener.
