Solid-Black Compact disc edition for the music lovers and record collectors alike. The first solo-Paradox LP hit the world’s record stores after a 9-year album exile. You need to cast your minds back to 2002 to dig up the last Paradox long-player with it’s collection of Jungle and Breakbeat tempos with a Live P.A. PM021 – Paradox – Ramifications LP Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
A taste of the new Paradox Ramifications LP with a 12” album sampler of DnB and 125 bpm breakbeat on the flip. Mystical vocals and strings lead ’Antilogy’ into a car crash of heavy drums in true paradox style whilst crashing into dark tunnel of esoteric stabs and samples. Sub bass booms layer the kick drums and acid samples pave the road clear for the relentless ride of Antilogy. After 5 years of solo Alaska albums ’Black 69 [version]’ marks a welcome return to the drum techniques of Paradox. This sampler-only version of ‘Black 69’ is raw uncooked meat as they come with 125 bpm ultra-dirty funk breaks and eerie 70’s soundtrack samples lavished in effects, demonstrating an aura that only Paradox knows how to create. Deep pads and vocals emerge from the dark and when the analogue bass drops.. you instantly know the unique identity and sound of ‘Black 69 [Version]’. REDSEAL010 – Need For Mirrors – Fishscale / Retrograde – 12″ Vinyl
Solid White vinyl 12″ promo. After their recent Samurai Red Seal debut, Mosus and HLZ aka Need For Mirrors return with yet another diverse duo of tunes further displaying their confident versatility. ‘Fishscale’ is disturbingly heavy in the low end, so much so we advise planning your sets around it as it makes most other recent Drum and Bass tunes sound like the bass kill switch is on. The tunes strident step and familiar vocal connect the dots between vintage Jonny L and Doc Scott productions and the year 2011. ‘Retrograde’ is the darkest tune to ever be released on Samurai Red Seal. It’s ragged beauty caught our attention instantly though, and many a crowd has fallen victim to its cute malice. DJ Bailey (Metalheadz / 1Xtra) has been one of this tunes strongest supporters. Released on solid white vinyl and digital

Heavy 1 from Tokyo represents Japan and is our first ever signing from the Samurais homeland. ‘Millers’ may be recognisable to many of you from its’s appearance on DJ Marky’s recent Fabric Live mix. This tunes distinctly quirky funk has been winning crowds over since it was first drawn and we are extremely proud to have it released on the Samurai label. Samurai fave Nymfo represents the Netherlands in a head to head drinking contest with Christchurch, New Zealands Menace. We are not sure who won the alcoholic battle but the colossal bassline that was created in the session delivers a funky bounce that is very infectious. DJ support from everyone that has been sent these tunes, look out for Foreign Exchange Part 4 featuring representatives from Russia and the UK.

BOKACD001 – Von D – Daydreaming LP – CD
15 track CD Album version, shrink-wrapped textured reverse board digipack. ‘Daydreaming’ is the debut album release from Paris based artist Von D on Boka Records. A fusion chef of bassweight, Von D has deftly sliced into unpredictable genres, concocting strange and beautiful new forms. The album sees Von D collaborating with the internationally renowned Foreign Beggars, Phephe, David Boomah (vocalist for Shy FX Murderation), Riya & Mr Lager, while his previous work has also been remixed by a host of respected dubstep DJ’s including Skream and Tes La Rok. Born into the cultural melting pot of the Paris suburbs, Von D found his soul’s conduit in a beaten up old drum kit. Whilst the riddims of King Tubby alongside the foetal jungle of Photek and Serge Gainsborg were initial inspirations, after forging a successful path as a sound engineer Von D honed his sound sculpting skills to a razor sharp edge. Von D’s productions have been picked up by Skream, arguably one of dubstep’s most successful artists, who snapped up a release for his label Disfigured Dubs. DJ Chef released Von D’s ‘Show Me’ on his Sub Freq imprint, which quickly became one of the most talked about releases of 2009 – so much so that three time DMC World Champion DJ Craze has been supporting the track in recent mixes. Not one to be complacent, Von D’s kept up the pressure with releases on Black Acre, Tempa, Soul Jazz and Argon – enough to attract the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson who has included a track for his hotly anticipated ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation album. Von D has created a global buzz with his numerous explosive live performances featuring unreleased and exciting material from himself as well as other established producers. Having had a host of successful tours in the United States, Europe and China, Von D has now set his sights on touring New Zealand and Australia.

DRUNK022 – Andy Mac – Everytime / Asteroid Belts – 12″ Vinyl
Andy Mac’s underground anthem ‘Everytime’ finally hits wax on Punch Drunk, following on from Kahn’s trailblazing 12” debut for the label back in February. ‘Everytime’ has been bumpin’ dance floors in Bristol and beyond for a year with it’s deep grooving, insistent rhythm and unmistakeable vocal. Flip over for brand new track, ‘Asteroid Belts’, a marching, gritty, late night mutant house rhythm that snakes it’s way into your consciousness. This original and infectious debut is contributing to a redefinition and reconfigurement of Bristol dance music for 2011. Starting out with Hip Hop, an aesthetic that defines his own productions, Andy Mac’s dj journey has taken him through Broken Beat, Jungle, House and Garage and more recently Dubstep. As a founding member of Bristol’s Falling Up crew, he promotes and djs at their own events across the city of Bristol, providing an alternative take on soulful and forward thinking dance music and featuring like minded guest artists such as Floating Points, Alexander Nut and Benji B along the way. An accomplished DJ, you can expect him to drop tracks from artists as varied as Foul Play, Artwork, IG Culture and Levon Vincent in amongst his own productions.

2NDRP12011 – LV & Message To Bears ft Zaki Ibrahim – Explode – 12″ Vinyl
The second release from south London based LV on 2nd Drop, but this one is a little different, you might say more international. Basking in the afterglow of their much hyped Kwaito inspired bomb, Boomslang on Hyperdub last year, the LV trio stick the brakes on and crank up the soulful vibes for this release. With well established roots in South Africa, a recording session at the Red Bull studios in Cape Town saw LV record a number of vocal collaborations with the honeyed-voiced Zaki Ibrahim. Zaki’s Canadian and Burmese heritage not provides her with striking looks but also politically charged ammunition for her lyrics. The third angle of this collaboration is a young band from leafy environs of Oxford. After discovering Message to Bears on YouTube trying to make more dubstep / electronic music, 2nd Drop saw the opportunity to link the disparate groups together. Explode was created, with M2B providing lush piano motifs and subtle strings. So, with such great music and beautiful vocals, we had a hard time limiting our remix options! 1st up is the mysterious Mothy with his Implosion redux. Sounding like Mount Kimbe on Novocaine, the original is dubbed, filtered and squeezed into a cerebral paste.

EXIT031 – Synkro & Indigo – Guidance – 12″ Vinyl
Synkro & Indigo are a welcome new addition to the Exit catalogue. After both their solo contributions to the Mosaic Vol 1 compilation they join forces (as they very often do) and provide two tracks that fully explain why they are pricking up many ears at the moment and building a solid fan base. Never afraid to write music from the heart rather than trying to fit a mould, they bring a refreshing and inspirational sound to the table and Exit Records are proud to provide an outlet for their work. Their dedicated followers have eagerly awaited guidance, and there’s good reason. Awash with lush atmospheres and vocals it’s a track that manages to touch the listener’s soul and becomes more addictive the more it’s listened to. Delayed snare rolls and fills create an ocean of space for the ambience to develop into a warm and cosey blanket of pure bliss. Reflection contains the same emotion triggering qualities as the A side and is the perfect partner. A little more drum based than its accomplice but just as soothing, it takes you through a workout of intricate beat edits and mixes distant classical vocals with subtle chord progressions. Listen on headphones for a widescreen experience as their use of stereo imaging and attention to detail makes this a very special track.

IDLE006 – Szare – Volya / Action Five – 12″ Vinyl
“It’s an exciting time for Idle Hands, as the fledgling label mutates into a many headed musical beast. After the Bristol record shop Rooted Records sold its last chunk of wax late last year, Idle boss Chris Farrell has carried the torch and opened the Idle Hands store on Stokes Croft in Bristol city centre. Just as the shop highlights Idle Hands’ dedication to its hometown, this latest release on the label marks the first time the music has come from outside the city limits. Szare will probably not be a name familiar to many, having covertly established himself on the lauded Horizontal Ground label, basking in the stamped white label anonymity of deep, troublesome 4/4. Now with this release and his Syndrom Z label, the producer steps just a little into the light to expose his unique abstractions on swung techno. ‘Volya’ ploughs a sparse and percussive furrow, while ‘Action Five’ boasts a wistful, dreamlike melodic bent to leave you with two distinctly different, but equally enthralling cuts.”

PRDM004 – Rie Lambdoll / Dub Magus From Beruit – Smell Of You (More Mix) – 10″ Vinyl
RIE LAMBDOLL, known for electronics duo CROSSBRED and respected among activities in variety of fields, and free form unit DUB MAGUS FROM BEIRUT arising from the breakup of the post hardcore band beirut5 in the search of even more inspiring sounds. 10inch split coupled with two geniuses prominent in the increasingly chaotic Osaka underground has come out!! RIE LAMBDOLL side includes deep and uplifting track “SMELL OF YOU” with electro-taste elusive bass, melancholy synths/ noise, and own voice samples flying in the atmosphere. A blissful killer-trip drowning into the aesthetic world of RIE LAMBDOLL’s harmony of beauty and darkness. Mastering and cutting done by DUB PLATES & MASTERING、RASHAD BECKER lead to bass conscious result pointing out a link between recent new breed bass music. DUB MAGUS FROM BEIRUT includes two evil minded tracks going from down tempo/ minimal dub to black metal-ish minimal hardcore. In “MARIKA”, restless wave of triple time beats calmly pushes the fetal movement deep inside, and tremolo lights illuminates the seafloor of echoes. From the subtle yet profound soundscape of spacious synths and rising noise, in “Vengeance Is Mine”, death voice, metal percussion, Chinese gong, noise etc. welters into a thrash tune. A short track of ill refrains and robust kicks lights up your impulse. Their extensive insights and upcoming works are not to be missed.

DUBLINE009 – Melamin & Wicked Sway – Cheaper To Die EP – 12″ Vinyl
DUBLINE RECORDS unveils their next release by the Neurodub duo that runs the DUBLINE camp – Melamin & WIcked Sway. The theory behind this production outfit is balance. Neurologically the human brain percieves information to be incomplete if it is not symmetrical. In a practice of endless work ethic the sound design interfaces perfected beats that have an even balance of elements. The process in which people follow music as a path is implied in the waking of the conscious mind while in it spirit. The thought process of their approach to neuro is always written for the peoples’ natural instinct to follow obvious paths of information that can be used to direct the appliance of listening as a being of light tunes in and drops out the appropriate information. Thus by drawing attention to the information the focus remains to show the difference between the foreground and background. A focal point is intended to encourage the listener to always furthur the exploration of the information presented. Using elements that are different to show that they are clearly different components of presented information and yet both also with similarity to those of the same reference. Its simply easier for ones step towards enlightenment in the experience of being human to  realize the thought process and recognize the ego; reminding at the expense of the thinking brain that its CHEAPER TO DIE.

With the hitsingles ‘Hypersun’ and the ‘The Invasion’ they continued to show off their abnormal talent of creating high quality productions. The highlight of the label was unleashed in 2010 with the dubstep doublepack part of the ‘Lights and Wires’ album! SUBWAYDS004 – Benny Page – Original Killa / Take You Back – 12″ Vinyl
Whoever listened to the early sets of N-Type, Youngsta, Seven and probably tonnes of others should know of Benny Page his dubstep. His signature sound can only be described as a rollercoaster ride of subs, dub and garage all coming at you at the speed of light. Everybody who has been keeping their ears open knows that there is one long lost benny page track that collectors have been aching to add to their collection. ‘Original Killa’ is that track.. hammered early on by the great Youngsta & N-type on their Rinse gave this tune a cult status which lead to countless threads on forums and requests. Subway got the OK for the 12 and now it’s finally ready! But no 12 inch complete with a B side. So what about another long lost Benny Page track? ‘Take You Back’ is no different from Killa its rolls out like a bunch of junglistic vans setting out to a rave, with the soundsystems turned up to max.. Its dark, gritty yet still fresh and full of energy for the dancefloors. It just goes to show that time doesn’t has anything on quality tunes.

With its juicy form and rave like edits it’s obvious that Distal is no one day fly. With releases set for Pinch’s Tectonic label and Sinden’s Grizzly you’ll what to expect from this guy. Flip it over for ‘Space Graffiti’ another piece of interstellar vandalism.. this time Distal shows what he’s worth on a more dubby side.. Don’t underestimate this one as this will pound any speaker system to bits with its firm deep bassline.. Let the tribal beats pick you up and put you down wherever you want to!

Von D “Daydreaming” LP [Boka Records]

Von D “Daydreaming” LP [Boka Records]

Posted 27 May 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Von D

Paradox presents “Ramifications” LP [Paradox Music]

Posted 23 May 2011 | By | Categories: news | 1 Comment

June 6th 2011 sees a rare solo-Paradox LP hit the world’s record stores after a 9-year album exile.
The ‘Ramifications LP’ is a welcome return to the building blocks of breakbeat wizadry that Paradox built up during his reign at 4-Hero’s legendary Reinforced Records and this third artist instalment (and incredibly Mr Pandya’s ninth vinyl album overall) is his best studio album to date.

You need to cast your minds back to 2002 to dig up the last Paradox long-player with it’s collection of Jungle and Breakbeat tempos with a Live P.A. DVD to boot, and the ‘Ramifications LP’ continues the fashion with razor sharp breaks and grooves ranging from 125 to 172 bpm in classic Paradox style.

Paradox

A sampler 12” [PM021] featuring sampler-only mixes will precede the album and then the full ‘Ramifications LP’ drops via glorious 3×12” Marble-splattered vinyl packs alongside a stunning Solid-Black Compact disc edition for the music lovers and record collectors alike [PMLP02/PMLPCD02].

The A side of this release features a track from the CD & MP3 release of the Dispatch ‘Transit One’ album – Skeptical & MC Fokus’s “Structure”; this is a track we received many emails and messages from quite simply asking “why is this not on vinyl” (along with other album tracks being referenced that did not appear as part of the vinyl package), the volume of differing requests led us to decide quite simply to put it to the vote and along with some help from K-Mag, Soundcloud and a mass of public votes here is the winning result pressed on to the a-side of this limited 10″ vinyl. On the flip we’ve got something completely fresh from label man Ant TC1 in the shape of the track “Mode Destruction” which is best explained as minimal but devastating when played loud! Enjoy.

Switch Technique is also busy as a label co-owner of newborn UNION RECORDINGS which will to heave into view more hearbraking releases from himself and some of the leading scene artists, such as The Outside Agency, Machine Code aka Current Value and Dean Rodell, Cooh or DJ Hidden.

BRD009 – Kubrak – Ursa Major / Time Moves On – 12″ Vinyl
Kubrak, one half of dynamic production duo Utopia, previously featured on BRD003; with his solo effort ‘Fast Forward’. Cementing his name as one of the emerging artists to keep your eye on in 2009, Kubrak has gone one step further to unveil his first solo release on Breed 12 Inches. Yet another Russian (one of 5 to appear so far on Breed’s back catalogue), Kubrak captures the industrial movement of his home country, in such a manner that results in a legion of fans. Unrelenting, much like his homeland, his production output is in your face, whilst keeping your feet firmly planted with inventive and progressive melodic based arrangements. We welcome Kubrak back to the family, but most certainly not for the last time. The A-side ‘Ursa Major’ kicks of in enigmatic fanfare, with hyped strings progressively amounting towards that trademark stomping Kubrak drop. Big, beefy and full of quirky melodies, Kubrak caters for all spectrum’s with this dancefloor smasher. The stars are out in full view.Something slightly different from Kubrak on the flipside, with ‘Time Moves On’. Kubrak drives the track forward with gorgeous melodies, complete with a sublimely elegant vocal, yet manages to keep his trademark bleeps and drones present. A perfect blend for an artist who can only get better.

DETAIL006 – Lynx & Hellrazor – Traffic Jam – 12″ Vinyl
Traffic Jam featuring fellow studio companion Hellrazor has all the brooding tension of 5 o clock rush hour on the M1. Never quite reaching utter road rage its scatty beats and warped basslines are backed up by sporadic car horns and traffic atmospheres. Nina is a track very close to Lynx, written about a relationship that was never meant to be. Heartfelt chords and vocals reminisce on what once was. As the vocal whispers – Love grows naturally…. and so does the track. As supported by Marky, Shy FX, Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Bailey, Lenzman and more.

RECIPE019 – Jubei / Foreign Concept – Recipe Book Volume One Part Two – 12″ Vinyl
The 2nd instalment increases the pressure! Jubei’s “The Path” was a classic in 2009 and man of the moment Skeptical has created a killer remix! Staying with the intense vibe, this is pure gnarly business & highlights just how fresh Skeptical’s sound is. 2012 & beyond. Flip for another rising star in the making “Foreign Concept”. He has 3 massive tunes released in 2011 and this just might be the pick of the bunch. “Jaipur” is very Metalheadz in vibe & style & completes a superb 12” for the Ingredients camp. Dj support comes from Jubei, dBridge, Break, Mikal,

DSM019 – June Miller – Strike Anywhere – 12″ Vinyl
With DSM having taken a turn down slightly darker paths with some of its more recent releases. Dutch uber-duo June Miller serve up two nasty half stepping tracks to continue this trend. Razor-sharp, scattering drums and growling bass pound their way unrelentingly throughout the a side ‘Strike Anywhere’ with the wailing synth line that sits a top these two elements adding a distinctly nervous, tension building atmosphere. With this outfit having made their name in the deeper, dare we say it, more ‘minimal’ side of the genre, this track shows their adeptness at creating devastating dance floor tunes too. Rising start Circa joins the fray from the B-Side ‘Glass jaw’. The subtle, tiptoeing of the intro makes way and distorted, warping bassline after the dramatic pause before the drop-people won’t know what hit’em! More crisp, 2-step beats drive the track forward while diminutive rolls on the hats and cinematic strings and chords adding points of interest throughout. This is a no holds barred straight up screw face slice of wax. You have been warned.

CRIT056LTD – Enei – One Chance / Labyrinth – 12″ Vinyl
Very limited pressing. Over recent months Enei has become one of the most hotly tipped producers in drum and bass. A series of quality releases and sought after dubplates mean he is the name everyones dropping. This release is a special one, due to demand from the people Critical have decided to commit to wax one of Eneis classic roll outs. One Chance is a track that featured on Andy C’s Nightlife 5 and was doomed to stay a digital only release. Never one to let the fans down we thought it best to do a highly limited run of white labels. So here it is the future funk of One Chance back with the grimey tech out of Labyrynth with fellow Russian Eastcolors. Pick it up whilst you can….

FOKUZLP007 – Donnie Dubson – Monday Is The New Sunday – 12″ Vinyl x 4
In the impressive flow of new talent in 2011 on Fokuz recordings we already had the pleasure to present the sound of Brother, Command Strange and Intelligent Manners among others. The next flavour of the funky liquid melting pot called Fokuz Recordings goes by the name Donnie Dubson. Berlin based Irishman Donnie O’Sullivan aka Donnie Dubson started releasing his funky rollers on Have a Break and Influenza Media and already featured on Fokuz on the Chronicles of the Deep LP together with Stunna back in 2007. The Grapefruit / Battlecat release on Influenza Media in 2009 got him a lot of attention and is still heard in dj sets today. Now it’s 2011 and Fokuz presents the beautiful debut album of Donnie Dubson! His sound can be described as refreshing and original Liquid drum’n bass with a touch of the well known atmospheric drum’n bass vibes from the mid 0′s. His basslines are the unique sellingpoint as well as his ability to create an organic feel in the music that’s only done by the few who truly understand what liquid drum’n bass is all about. Pleasuring both critical listeners and the dancefloor audience this album is a perfect overview of the sound FOKUZ stands for. A great example of how music can be “time-less” in this decade of fast moving consumer goods.

IMLP001 – Blue Motion – Stay Forever LP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Since forming Blue Motion in 2009, Slovakia’s Dirrrty B and Belgium’s Influenza Media founder Eros have set out across the airwaves, unleashing a relentless amount of deep and soul-moving musical allure to the masses. Lashing out like an unexpected storm, the duo has left its imprint on many well known labels, including Fokuz, Phunkfiction, Spearhead, Good Looking, Blu Saphir, Citrus, Telluric, Peer Pressure, Vibration, Point 9 Audio, Temper D Productions, Future Thinkin, and Influenza Media, and has collaborated with the likes of Sconeboy, The Square, Atmospherix, Brandon Miles, Paul SG, Mutt, Stanza, Wreckage Machinery, and SoulTec. Vocalists Grimm and MC Fava have also been heard as their vocal stylings creep through the depths of this emotional sound mosaic. The pair’s first album, Stay Forever (to be released on Influenza Media) is a blissful journey through the valleys of deep drum & bass. Compiled on both vinyl and digital formats, each has a unique selection of tracks to offer – The digital release takes you on a trek through the Haunted Forest as you munch on Blueberries in Autumn. Enigmatic chanting is heard in the distance as A Cavetroll Named Bob welcomes you to this mysterious adventure. You’ll travel over A Path Unwalked as you and your party become Desperados wishing to be Walking Through The City while Waiting For Her. The vinyl version offers a different flavor, continuing this celestial, heart-felt journey Miles Away on A Foggy Day. But don’t get too morose as there is hope in the upbeat, breaks-driven Last Sunbeam. The tempo continues to build in Everywhere I Go before launching into the techy sounds of the heavily vocoded Computer Love. MC Fava lends his talents on a plethora of tracks, including Addicted and the title track, Stay Forever.

SCREW005 – Gatekeeper – Rawtones / Ignite (Ft. Grilza & Dread) – 12″ Vinyl
Gatekeeper (A.k.A William Scott Cree) has been a fundamental part of the dubstep scene ever since it all began many years ago. He has played all over Europe, collaborated with headhunter, statix & komonazmuk (to name a few!) He’s been a part of the infamous ‘Hench’, released tunes on ‘if symptoms persists’ and now joins the unstoppable force that is Screwloose records. Screwloose are proud to announce that the long awaited ‘raw tones’ and ‘ignite’ will be seeing a vinyl release within the first quarter of 2011. Both tunes have been supported by the likes of chase & status, jakes and Mary Anne Hobbs; who played it on her radio one show various times. Gatekeeper describes his sound to be somewhere between dubstep and grime but still keeping it within the ‘Bristol sound’ and that’s exactly what he has achieved with both these massive releases. ‘Raw tones’ consists of unique sounding drums, dark bass lines and moody atmospheres, where as ‘Ignite’ boasts the classic gatekeeper sound and vocals from the infamous ‘Dread Mc’ and local hero ‘Grillza’. He’s kept his head low and his style underground, but gatekeeper continues to amaze us with his production and is backing down easily!

KOKESHI005 – Irrelevant ft. Brad Sucks – Better Off In Me (Original / Calibre Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Limted white Vinyl pressing. Featured on the Kokeshi ((pod)) Kasts, Irrelevant’s ‘Better Off in Me’ has been one of the most asked about tracks featured on the label’s podcast series. A futuristic garage / dubstep / electronica /whatever tune with potential mainstream crossover, this is just a sample of what’s to come from Irrelevant’s debut LP coming out later this year. When thinking who best to remix a tune of this potential, Kokeshi thought only the king of melancholia himself, Calibre could suit such a touching track. The brief for Calibre was only to keep it at a similar BPM..and the result is a tune unlike anything Calibre has done before..with the 2-step Garage feel to it, its sure to be a hit on both the Radio and the Club circuit. DJ support from Appleblim, DJ Flight, Consequence, SP : MC, Dark Sky.

BRK018 – Aleks Zen – High Life / Pimp Shoes – 12″ Vinyl
For Berkane Sol 18 we present the vinyl debut of the hugely talented Aleks Zen. He calls his outfit ‘Neon Bounty’ and its easy to hear why. His brightly coloured music is like the soundtrack to a thrill seekers ride through the downtown areas of a tropical metropolis – sensuous but edgy, and properly booming on the right kind of car stereo. His riddims are propulsive and a joy to dance to, bringing together the best aspects of both house and dubstep. Melodically these tunes feel like the emotions of classic West Coast g-funk filtered through the mongrel mindset of the current UK bass music scene. Or as Aleks puts it himself – “I’ve been on hip-hop, grime, house and dubstep, now I’m trying to to create my own musical paradigm that still relates to people’s earthly emotions”. Pimp Shoes is maybe the best example of this – sometimes it feels just like an upbeat oldskool computer game theme, but then it evolves through some highly accomplished and unexpected key changes that put it in a whole new category.

PLATTER001 – Appleblim & October – NY Fizzzzz / Fountains Of Paradise – 12″ Vinyl
Launching out of the sizzling melting pot of Bristol music, Schmorgasbord is a project that aims to stand testament to the generic ambiguity that characterises contemporary electronic music. Each release will force together the sonic aesthetics of two artists from different rhythmic disciplines, one being 4/4 (house, techno, disco) and the other being broken beat (dubstep, 2-step, hip hop), to see what happens when they tackle each others music. This may take the form of a collaboration, as on the first release, or it may manifest in original productions and their ensuing remixes. ‘NY Fizzzzz’ is a peak-time belter in the truest sense of the word, launching to life with a rigid 4/4 drum machine stomp. Appleblim’s dub tendencies pepper October’s knack for the jack with spacious delays and reverbs before a muted piano hook gets filtered into the mix. Melting away to let the chords shine through, the drop encapsulates the pinnacle of any late night jam; bright, bold and brassy, and irresistibly catchy. ‘Fountains Of Paradise’ trickles in on a bed of rippling FX, guided by haunting, melodic synth flourishes that only vintage gear can conjure up. The rhythm section ticks away faithfully as the distinctly psychedelic tones and drones shape the definitive 21st century dub track.

FRJ009 – Sully – Toffee Apple (Limited 10″ with hand-etched B-side) – 10″ Vinyl
Frijsfo Beats are proud to announce the latest single from UK bass badman, Sully, entitled ‘Toffee Apple’. Picking up where his 2010 Keysound single ‘In Some Pattern’ left off, it sees the versatile pirate vibes-imbibed producer take purple synths and twist them into dizzying contortions. A rude drop roots the track firmly in UK soundsystem culture while a tough steppers beat drives it forward. Sully is one of the most treasured yet under-celebrated producers in the UK today. Finding a space between 2step’s swing, dubstep’s edge and breakstep’s drums, his versatile productions perfected styles and vibes four or five years before the ‘future garage’ movement had begun to investigate them. As the rest of the bass family are now embracing house, 2step, UK funky, purple synths and juke, Sully looks to have a big 2011 ahead of him. ‘Toffee Apple’ is the perfect sweetener. HF028 – Roska – Error Code / Abrupt – 12″ Vinyl
Hotflush presents the full label debut of UK funky figurehead Roska, following his appearance on the recent BACK AND 4TH compilation and seminal remix of Untold’s “Just For You” in 2009. This release brings together two cuts that emphasize a healthy evolution of the Roska style that has made such an impact on bass music in the last couple of years. Retaining the customary hard-hitting percussion and raw syncopated rhythms, a slightly futuristic twinge moves us into more unfamiliar territory, with the energetic synth arpeggiation of “Error Code” backed by the spacier, dubbed-out “Abrupt”.

MEDI042 – V.I.V.E.K – Eyes Down EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
V.I.V.E.K’s long awaited second EP and 4th release on Mala’s DEEP MEDi imprint comes in the form of the ‘Eyes Down EP’. Influenced by the golden years of Drum N Bass and a steady diet of dub and roots music, V.I.V.E.K has been honing his musical construction skills since 2004. Progressing naturally from DJing to production, and originally beginning to build music around the 170 tempo, 140 bpm was the pitch that worked for V.I.V.E.K to shape his about unique subterranean groove. If 2010 was the year that saw V.I.V.E.K laying his roots/dub foundations and cementing his name and sound on the Dubstep scene with his well received ‘Feel It’ EP then 2011 seems like his year to shine with his much talked about appearance at the this years first DMZ (which got him signed to booking agency ESP) and his club banger ‘Pulse’ released in March. The EP starts off where ‘Pulse’ finished with the powerful ‘Big Bang’, another club favourite and sound system tune full of pulsating sub weight, cold snares and a uneasy sense of dread. ‘Spread Love’ lightens the mood and sees V.I.V.E.K channel his production talents into a laid back, dreamy, engaging groove, Perfect for summer. ‘Sirens’ swiftly moves in and heads straight for the jugular upping the tempo Steppers style! With its pulsating b-line, subtle percussion and mesmerizing dubbed out horns, this one keeps you locked. V.I.V.E.K keeps the title track till last with the highly magnetic and haunting ‘Eyes Down’. Eyes Down has a real cinematic feel and real tension about it that wouldn’t feel out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster. Dark, moody, sparse and as expected serious bass weight! “People Have To Feel it”

CVAN015 – Emptyset feat. Cornelius Harris – Altogether Lost (Scuba & Peverelist Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
Altogether Lost is a collaboration between the Bristol based experimental techno duo Emptyset and the Detroit vocalist Cornelius Harris aka Atlantis from Underground Resistance. Inspired by an early 20th century poem of mystical heritage, the project marks the first ever joint production by these three major capitals of electronic music and is backed up by a very friendly and creative label partnership between Bristol/UK based Caravan Recordings and CLR from Frankfurt/Germany where both labels release different versions and remixes of the original in a mutual promotion and release approach. Caravan Recordings contributes to this series with a couple of exquisite interpretations from two stalwarts of the UK dubstep scene. First up is a fully immersive re-work from the now Berlin based SCB (Scuba’s techno alias). The head honcho of Hotflush needs no introduction and this edit feels like it’s been made for the Berghain dancefloor. – in our opinion one of his best to date under his SCB alias. Flip for a trademark interpretation from Punch Drunk label boss Peverelist. Pushing the envelope as always he works his signature groove seamlessly with disorientating textures and percussive motifs producing a track with a defined, driving intensity. Caravan is (as you might imagine) delighted to have him on board, completing the wax end of this series perfectly support from 2562, Ewan Pearson, Martyn, Reso, Mary Anne Hobbs, Derek Plaslaiko, October, Brackles, Atki2, Audiojack, Starkey, Timo Mass, Chrissy Murderbot, Bryan Kasenic, John Osborn, Sandrien, Alex Flitsch…

New D&B Releases

SOM012 – State Of Mind – Nil By Ear EP 1 (2X12” & CD Album shrink-wrap bundle) – 12″ Vinyl x 2
2X12” & 11 track CD Album shrink-wrap bundle. Nil by Ear is Sate of Mind’s third studio album, the first two being Take Control (Uprising) & Faster than Light (SOM). This album represents the peak so far of the lads technical skills, its carefully produced from start to finish. Tracks are frequently tied together, and a lot of thought has gone into the flow of the album. This is one that can be listened too from beginning to end, as opposed to a collection of singles. However that doesn’t mean that State of Mind have forgotten about the 3am raver. Almost all of the tracks have all been smashing it up world wide over the last 6 months in their own right.Collaboration wise, the album features several of NZ’s most talented vocalists including Shapeshifter’s P.Digsss, Thomas Oliver, Sacha Vee, Mc Woody & PNC, as well as American singer 3pm. The only production collaborators are Nymfo and DNME. Several other collaborations were planned for the LP, but in the end were unable to fit.  These will be released as bonus tracks.

SOULR049 – Marcus Intalex – 21 [Vinyl Edition] – 12″ Vinyl x 3
The Vinyl version features six D&B tracks on 3×12” Vinyl. From the bright, florescent metallics of ‘Celestial Navigation,’(feat S.P.Y.) through to the darker tinges of the sharp-edged, sparse landscape of ‘Hot Hands.’ D&B gets a slightly more menacing dub makeover, while ‘Paulista’ (feat S.P.Y.) & ‘Wacky Races’ both hold the layered, tightly produced drum programming that Intalex is known for. ‘Meltdown’ is a typically immaculate, roller that stems from collaborating with Calibre. The album’s standout is the beautifully emotive ‘Climbing Up The Walls, which features the vocals of Drum & Bass producer Danny Fierce, and stands as a breathtaking, adventurous take on Radiohead. These tracks are currently being championed by the main beat seekers of D&B such as Radio 1′s Fabio & Grooverider, Hype, Friction, Tony Coleman, Nu Tone. Ant TC1, Andy C.

ADRS004 – Sensa & Haste – The Place / Don’t Forget – 12″ Vinyl
This is quite possibly Audio Danger Records biggest release to date. It features up and coming artists Sensa & Haste (AKA HYBRID MINDS). Sensa has been bubbling under the surface for sometime now and it was only a matter of time before he would be releasing tracks for Audio Danger Records. His skill, along with Haste’s passion for the music shows the pairs diversity in this formidable release. Audio Danger Records are proud to have this pairing on board. The Place oozes with originality and uses simplistic beats and rhythms to create a wonderful abstract piece of Drum and Bass. This track could be played in most sets as it has mass crossover appeal and the concept flows seamlessly throughout. Sensa & Haste (AKA HYBRID MINDS) have truly brought something new to the table. Don’t Forget is a punchy bass-line roller. It uses the straight beats of much of today’s dance floor tracks with a sick bass line that is sure to get any dance floor moving. The groove in this track is what sets it apart from other tracks in its sub genre. The tune is a must for all and Sensa has truly shown his skill in this rolling bass heavy track. Support from UKF, Netsky, Camo & Krooked, Crissy Criss (BBC 1xtra), Utah Jazz, Zen, Savage Rehab, The Risky (DnBArena Podcast), Stanza and many more.

SUBTLE005EP – Nebula – Astral Soul EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Despite the fact that he hadn’t even reached his teenage years around the time of Jungle’s hey-day in the mid nineties, that’s the sound that still influences Nebula (aka Peter Saunders) the most to this day. The “Astral Soul” EP focusses on the atmospheric and meditiative side of Nebula’s production but the breakbeat manipulation and rumbling bass people best know him for are still to the fore. Rough and smooth, ethereal and brutal, fast and slow, the strength of this collection is in the finely balanced juxtapostion of these contrasting elements. While there there is a journey to be made within each track, there is another to be made in traversing the EP as a whole – you might just feel like you’ve reached some far away universe by the end ! Whether it’s the drifting atmosphere and acrobatic amens of “Encounters”, the lush pads and tough beats of “Warm Currents”, the glistening synths and crashing snare-step of “Astral Soul”, the machine-gun rhythms and strings of “Escapsim” or the trippy breakbeats leading you to the “Hidden Oasis”, this is an adventure where horizons are broadened and new discoveries made throughout.

b Nebula – Warm Currents
c Nebula – Astral Soul

NU12050 – Triad – Crooked – 12″ Vinyl
Normal service is resumed on Nu Directions, returning to 170BPM with an offering from some of the drum & bass scene’s most forward-thinking producers, Triad. Triad is the name given to german duo Henree and Basstikal. Both established producers in their own right, their meeting of minds has given their productions new depth and a totally original approach to drum & bass. Releases on DSM, Critical and Horizons, plus their excellent remix of Omar’s ‘Lay It Down’, have laid the foundations for what is to be a fruitful 2011 for this collaborative project. ‘Crooked’ is a shuffling minimal work-out which uses dense atmospheres and growling bass stabs to create a haunting mood, before breaking into it’s techno fuelled, energy soaked finale. ‘The Puzzle’ again captures Triad’s unique ability to create musical soundscapes. With light snappy beats and deep stirring synths creating a track that sounds as fresh today as it will in 10 years time, future music.

FOKUZLP007S1 – Donnie Dubson – Monday Is The New Sunday Album Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
This brandnew 12 inch is the sampler for the upcoming debut album called ‘Monday Is The New Sunday’, and is a good taster of what to expect! A – Rolling Roller: As the title suggests this is the roller in its purest form. Light stepping beats full of percussion and a solid deep subbass breathing on the background. Subtle edits, humming vocals and synths going from side to side to take you into a deep trance on the dancefloor. Rolling Roller is featured on Lenzmans Metalheadz podcast 24. B – Grey Jeans: Showing his funky side Donnie is a little hapier on this cut. The beat is heavier than the Rolling Roller, but the vibe is funky and warm. Most def a summer tune for the nicest time of the year! Sing along with the bassline, and make your head nodd.

Limited Edition coloured vinyl: Mixed Dark Blue & White Vinyl One of the most anticipated releases for some time, we are proud to bring you the debut recordings from young Auckland, New Zealand duo Tokyo Prose. Discovered very early in their careers by DJ Presha, the two Sam’s were signed to Samurai Red Seal as core artists in a long term development deal. These 2 producers have quickly formed a very distinctive style that has been drawing fans in their droves. Gliding between minimal ambience and deep soulful steppers, these gifted young men aptly display their knack for sample selection and unique groove building. DMND003 – Heavy1 – Xiphactinus / Xiphactinus (Lenzman Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Proving once and for all that drum & bass is a global movement, here we have a single produced in Japan, A&R’d in Switzerland, remixed in Holland and distributed via the UK across the world. Thankfully the majority of these processes are done via the internet – otherwise we’re sure someone would have something to say about the carbon footprint of this one! Japanese producer Heavy1 takes to the helm for Demand Records’ third release, following two incredible singles featuring music from Spectrasoul, BTK, Nymfo, Lost Sequence and Codeshaper. Here you’re offered no reduction in quality as Heavy1 turns out an impeccable ride through drum & bass territory. Slowly opening with scattered hi hats and punctuating kicks, it’s not long before ‘Xiphactinus’ (a predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period if, like us, you had no idea what this was…) bares its prehistoric teeth, snapping at you with crisp snares and expertly placed sound effects. Basslines judder and bounce back and forth before engulfing you in their mighty jaws! This is undoubtedly the start of great things for Heavy1. On the flip, Demand enlists yet another well known name to add some remix action to the mix. This time it’s Metalheadz’ Lenzman who steps up, taking ‘Xiphactinus’ down a whole new aesthetic path. Turning a track that holds a brewing, unspoken menace into one with a euphoric edge isn’t an easy task, but Lenzman’s electro leads and warming bass notes manage it effortlessly. With a wave of new material ready for the second half of the year, Demand Records shows no signs of slowing their already incredible pace. Clearly a nomination for one of 2011’s hottest new D&B labels.

Very dark, very eerie & packs an almighty drop. This guy is definitely one to watch. Dj support comes from SPY, Total Science, Dbridge, Spectrasoul & more.

CITRUSLP005 – Fourward – Episodes – 12″ Vinyl x 4
The ever on point Citrus Recordings is stepping up for its 5th artist LP. after having released the debut Albums of Mindscape & Jade wich all went on for critical acclaim it’s time for Citrus to get ready for its 3rd Artist Album. This time it’s time for the debut album of ‘Fourward’! Hailing straight from lower Austria the four men collective FOURWARD started out producing music in early 2007. The boys knew each other for quite a while and shared the love and passion for drumandbass music. For them it was always a main issue not to stick to any particular tiny subgenre only, but to develop a sound of their own. All members have different musical backgrounds which fit together perfectly and provide a great studio vibe. Days went by and the boys finished a couple of tunes properly and it wasn’t long until Austrian drumandbass producer duo Body&Soul showed interest in their works. Also international artists like BBCs very own Crissy Criss began to support their music giving them airplay on his radio show. As a result of their effort FOURWARD has released quality tunes on labels like Subsonik Sound, Planet Funk and Fokuz. The year 2010 they experienced the so called ‘breakthrough’ with releases on NASCA Recordings and Fokuz followed by an epic 12inch for the legendary label VIRUS Recordings! The guys definitely didn’t stop there and being on the road now broadened their horizon even further. Resulting in a series of tunes perfectly fitting together in this 4pack 12inch. Diversity and musicallity are keywords for this album. Listen from Low Blow to You and Me, quality drum ‘n bass!!

DISF013 – Youandewan – Youandme (on My Mind) / Zeal – 12″ Vinyl
Next for Disfigured Dubz is the debut single from Leeds based producer Youandewan The story goes that one day whilst relaxing by the pool in Ibiza, Ewan’s manager played some of his demos on the soundsystem with Skream in company and he was gripped, two tracks were signed to Disfigured Dubz and here they are. A: Youandme (On my mind) harks back to the days when 2 Step garage ruled the London airwaves and gives a nostalgic look back to the pre-dubstep revolution. A crackling warm Rhodes loop and atmospheric field recordings warm the cones whilst vocal snippets creep in and float amongst the classic 2 step beats. Tension builds, temperatures rise and the bass blows like a cool breeze on a summer’s afternoon. AA: Zeal is the perfect complement to the A-side. Again with the winning combo of Rhodes piano, soulful vocals, snapping 2 step beats and glittering effects that bring the feel good factor to a maximum. This one just oozes sunshine.

3024012 – Addison Groove – It’s Got Me / Minutes Of Funk – 12″ Vinyl
In which 3024′s West Country takeover continues unabated with Addison Groove as one of 2010′s most celebrated Producers fires off a pair of brand new exclusives. ‘It’s Got Me’ drags a cornerstone of classic hip hop into the 21st century with trademark spasmodic Chicago drum acrobatics and vocal splicing working the track into a frenzy while his less acknowledged way with gauzy analogue textures never allow things to slip into the trap of dance floor bludgeon. Minutes Of Funk dials back the ferocity just enough to open up extra space for more luxurious synth washes and increasingly intricate rhythmic shifts as interlocking traces of dance floor past combine to form the thinking mans set opener.

Genetix are back with an EP that will rattle your chest with bass and make your head explode. Yes yes people, we are back!! It’s been a while, but we are going to be hitting you with some seriously good tunes this year, so watch this space. Anyway, on to the music ;) If you like you tunes big fat and heavy like an elephant on steroids, then get ready for an absolute pasting from new boy on the circuit, Depone! Depone is a producer that has really caught our ear at the Z Audio towers of late and when you hear these tunes, I’m sure you’ll understand why. All 3 tunes are fierce, dirty, gritty, disgusting and overall very well produced. The great thing about Depone is that he manages to create in your face music without pointlessly wobbling the LFO filter. There’s some real depth to this young talent and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some more great music from Depone in the very near future.

RECIPE017 – Dub Phizix – Out There / Athos – 12″ Vinyl
Dub Phizix is a fresh name for 2011. His unique style has won over many people including Soul:r & Creative Source with whom he has 12”s coming soon. His punchy production and clever arrangement impressed us at Ingredients and these two tracks have been on heavy rotation for the last 6 months. “Out There” is reminiscent of Photek’s drums and sounds, a great intro track. While “Athos” is a brave tune, some future thinking drum & bass with it’s tribal rhythms. REDSEAL008 – Tokyo Prose – Introducing Tokyo Prose (Phase 1) – 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition coloured vinyl: Mixed Orange & White Vinyl One of the most anticipated releases for some time, we are proud to bring you the debut recordings from young Auckland, New Zealand duo Tokyo Prose. Discovered very early in their careers by DJ Presha, the two Sam’s were signed to Samurai Red Seal as core artists in a long term development deal. These 2 producers have quickly formed a very distinctive style that has been drawing fans in their droves. CRIT055 – Code 3 – What You Sayin? – 12″ Vinyl
Fresh for the summertime shine is yet more goodness from camp Critical with a diamond dubplate burner straight out of the Code 3 studio. The production trio made up of SP:MC, Jubei and Dakuan show their pedigree for CRIT055 with two slabs of almost retro D&B that could only have come been from scene stalwarts like these. Quality through and through. ‘What You Sayin’ runs out with simple two-tone chords and a staggered break to ease us into this creeping cut of subtle but definitely dangerous drum & bass. Snapping snares roll out, sub thuds from beneath as the gnawing b-line wrestles its way to throughout rearing its head then ducking beneath the surface only for the smooth keys to return to the mix. A classy piece of contrasting moods that’ll sit perfectly on the Critical collector’s shelf. Over the page ‘Double Dipped’ intros with another big break and spooky, quizzical pads and a winding double-bass that weaves its way in gently to the drop. Perhaps reminding of the Full Cycle and Talkin’ Loud golden era this one is a hard-stepping, funked up track that’ll have the floors calling for the reload. Awesome! DJ support from Hype, Friction, Jubei, Fabio, Marky, Kasra, S.P.Y. and many more.

New Bass Music CD

HESCD001 – Various – Hessle Audio : 116 & Rising – CD x 2
The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far. The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue. There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors. The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’s rich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave. Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts. The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album.

IME026 – Kontext – Kontext (Double CD un-mixed) – CD x 2
The smoky tendrils of Stan Sevo’s music have come to shape much of what Immerse Records is about, from his first release for us back in 2008 through to his latest EP, the devastating ‘No More Room In Hell’ double pack. Stans tracks come from a world structured by micro-rhythms, where the architecture swings and funks with grace and poise, whilst the native organisms are nebulous wraiths of pads that flirt and tease the rumbling subbass that roams on the ground. The analogies may seem a little far-fetched, but the Kontext sound inspires such evocative images upon listening. Having disseminated under the radar to widespread critical acclaim, we felt it only right to bring together the strongest elements in the Kontext canon along with a few choice exclusives, to serve as a document for those unfamiliar with Russia’s best kept secret.

WHEELYDEALY014 – DJ Madd – Battle / Secrets – 12″ Vinyl
N Types label coms correct each and every time. Budapest born but now Bristol based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles – mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd – known to his parents as Peter Simon – manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days In his own words when speaking to the Sonic Router blog last year: “appreciating both Rusko and Martyn at the same time is not a crime,”

NONPLUS011 – Lowtec – Wonderkidd / Looser – 12″ Vinyl
The ball is certainly rolling in 2011 and next up is a treat from Germanys Lowtec. Founder of highly respected label Workshop he makes his UK label debut on Nonplus Records with two fresh cuts of analogue goodness. a) Lowtec ‘Wonderkidd’ ‘Wonderkidd’ greets us with a vocal sample that morphs keys with a low-fi piano chord before the discordant groove of the main riff comes into effect. Analogue synths dance around the deep chord groove with early detroitisms flexing between a repeating bleeped out pattern. Hypnotic key stabs sink you deeper into the tune that shows us why Lowtec is one of Berlin’s top underground button pushers. aa) Lowtec ‘Looser’ The warm hiss of anaolgue beats starts off the excellent AA tune ‘Looser’. Dabs of a.m radio vocals progress the tune amongst a myriad of discreet electronic bleeps that escalate and scatter around the rhythm. Coarsely sampled ‘Shakir-like’ string chords provide the main sequence to set off this excellent tune. One for the deeper heads out there.

NONPLUS012 – Boddika – You Tell Me / Breezin – 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus+ label owners Instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with Al Bleek working under his Boddika alias and Kid Drama as Jon Convex. Here we have Boddika’s first output on Nonplus+ after his debut on Naked Lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming EP on Swamp 81. His work has been supported by DJs across the board such as Benji B, Oneman, Scuba, Shy FX, Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Leofah, Skream and Zed Bias amongst many others. a) Boddika ‘You Tell Me’ ‘You Tell Me’ takes us back to the 80s with its electro tinged thumping drums and freaky synths. What at first seems to be a pretty straightforward track slowly mutates into an ugly beast with its pitch bent lead and warping drum grooves that slowly swing so far out and eventually re-sync with each significant transition. Not for the seasick. aa) Boddika ‘Breezin’ On the flip Boddika provides another striped back dancefloor warmer but here he comes with a 4×4 drum pattern. With very few elements he exploits them all to their limits and the track moves with an everchanging undercurrent of acid bass coated with subtle synth melodies that work their way around the bass in a mesmerizing arrangement. Another example of Boddika’s talent for working sound to maximum effect and keeping it simple but effective.

DP052 – Emalkay – Fabrication / Massive – 12″ Vinyl
Emalkay continues his unstoppable run of form with the new single ‘Fabrication’, a track that is as addictive as it is hard-hitting. Drifting in on the soft siren call of the vocals, Emalkay filters the bass through the intro, building to the drop of the catchy, mutating bassline. The organic skitter of hi-hats gives the sparse drum pattern its swing, leaving the bass to do the damage! On the flip ‘Massive’ cranks up the pressure with a serious head down steppa. The razor sharp bassline cuts through the track like a knife, held down only by the stomp of the drums, while the ebb and flow of the pads gives an underlying eerie atmosphere to the track. 2010 was a huge year for Emalkay. Having been thrown in to the limelight by the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ towards the end of 2009, he has continued to penetrate through the scene with a series of quality releases like ‘Crusader / Power Tool’ and ‘Solid State / Battle Suit’. With no sign of slowing down any time soon, he continues to cement his place as one of the most exciting producers around with each new track. Stepping into 2011 with the support of the biggest DJs on the scene, some seriously heavyweight artillery and an album due out later this year on Dub Police, there really is no stopping Emalkay at the moment!

CIV020 – dÉbruit – Sis Sürpriz EP (inc 3-D artwork and 3-D glasses) – 12″ Vinyl
When French producer dÉbruit relocated to London, it was just the start of a journey that would take him much further east than Hackney. dEbruit explains; “I lived in a Turkish neighbourhood in London and my productions are always a result of curiosity over the sounds and people around me. I wanted to learn more and try something with Turkish music and instruments so I travelled to Turkey in October, and I’m so glad I did.” The end results of dÉbruit’s travels are the four painstakingly crafted tracks of Şiş Sürpriz (which translates as Skewer Surprise). Traditional Turkish folk instruments are coupled with modern, synthetic sounds on an EP that’s full of eastern promise. Opener Accordé Don combines accordion and darbuka drums (a kind of goblet drum) with “bump-hop” beats, whilst Turkish Ish features zurna flutes, talkbox effects and scything synths. Mezdé’s bassheavy, low-slung bounce deploys the string sounds of the kabak kemane – a violin-like instrument originating from Southeastern Turkey – with darbuka and davul drums. Zurna flutes and synths return on the slo-mo, chopped and screwed digi-funk of Lil Zurna. Born Xavier Thomas and raised in Brittany, France, dÉbruit’s name is an amalgamation of the French words debris (broken glass) and bruit (noise). His boundary-smashing, genreswerving style deliberately veers towards the chaotic – “I like when electronic music and instruments lose control of what they’re meant to do”, he adds. Şiş Sürpriz is the third in dÉbruit’s trilogy of EPs which began with futuristic electro hip-hop workout Let’s Post Funk featuring Jamie Woon and Om’Mas Keith, and was followed by 2010’s African highlife inspired Spatio Temporel. The trio of releases all feature 3-D artwork by German designer Rainbowmonkey, and 3-D glasses are also included for your viewing pleasure. dÉbruit is currently crafting a debut album based around trips to West Africa and recordings with the region’s indigenous musicians and traditional instruments. dÉbruit has also been honing his live show which now incorporates a three-piece band, thumb pianos, African drums, highlife guitar, talk box and more, all accompanied by live visuals from Rainbowmonkey. The new and improved live experience will be unveiled at the dates below and dÉbruit’s album is due out later this year.

ZEN12288 – Mr Scruff – Wobble Control – 12″ Vinyl
The one, the only, the remarkably holey Mr. Scruff returns to battle with the moreish snafu of “Wobble Control”. A synth-heavy, low slung 4/4 number featuring a wiggling centipede of a keys line which will get under your nose in erotic ways you’ve never dreamt of, plus a goodly dollop of unruly bass, the whole thing scruffed up in the man-potato’s trademark warm ‘n’ dusty productio-stylo. The sound of electronic instruments getting together while their parents are out and having a good time. (We hope that sick will come out of the carpet).Next up, Nickodemus & Zeb from Brooklyn’s legendary Turntables On The Hudson crew tackle “Music Takes Me up”, adding a ton of bump & a ladle of synth to Alice Russell’s raw vocals and ending up with the kind of bumpy-synth soup audio-gourmands march miles for.

SAIGON005 – Milyoo – Kazaduon EP – 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Limited Edition vinyl pressing – With support from the likes of Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina, Karl Moestl, Bunzer0, Rob Booth, The Black Dog, James Mountain and more…. “Kentucky seems an unlikely place for bass music producers to be based, but with modern technology being what it is, geographical boundaries in music continue their slide into relative obsolescence. Having had his debut release featured in Boomkat’s top 100 singles of 2010, Milyoo has already been endorsed by Gilles Peterson and Mary Ann Hobbes, and judging by the quality of his latest work, the Kazaduon EP on Saigon, such hype is certainly justified. The title track is a melancholic yet strangely hopeful array of pop vocal samples, tearjerking keys and punchy drums. It’s slightly cheesy but enchantingly peculiar and one can’t help but be moved by the sheer amount of emotive musicality present. This musicality is led by the hand into more obscure territories in ‘Takedown’, with its broken beats, chordal pads, and simple melodies creating an ethereal soundscape punctuated by clever yet soulful drumwork. In the great tradition of keeping the truly weird stuff for the flip, the first b-side, ‘Box of Tapes’ unleashes an aural assault of acid infused dissociative chaos, which hangs on for dear life to a solid rhythm and chord motif. It’s delightfully disorganised and will have many listeners subconsciously calling for the outlawing of strict quantization to ensure music of this style is made more often. Closing track ‘Phonix’ is a little more restrained in its entropic aesthetic, but still keeps the beats wonky enough to be able to squeeze in some more ‘normal’ chord progressions without approaching over-sentimentality. Whether the track stands up on its own is perhaps up for debate, but it is a fitting end to a bizzarely brilliant release”. Words courtesy of: http://www.ibiza-voice.com/story/news/3133

HESLP001 – Various – Hessle Audio : 116 & Rising (3 X 12” Vinyl & 2 X CD Format) – 12″ Vinyl x 3
This format is 3X12” Vinyl & 2 X CD packaged together in a gatefold sleeve shrink wrapped. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’srich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust, the track driven forwarded by paper-like hi-hats and cymbals. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave. Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’, whose muted vocal chant was used to such beautiful effect in Kennedy’s recent FABRICLIVE mix. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template, with a reverb-soaked drum kit jostling against some analogue pads and a seagull-sounding distorted warble. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album. It’s soul music that’s undecidedly electronic, the vocals screwed and chopped into the background, a virtuoso display of arrangement ordering a lacklustre pair of cowbells, a chorus of shuffles, croaks and pads into an infectious slow burner.

HENCH025V – Jakes – Hench Mixtape Vol2. Sampler 2 – 12″ Vinyl
t’s been an interesting few years for the one called Jakes. From being one of the highest-regarded MC’s in the drum and bass world, he took his hand to producing. After creating some of Bristol’s earliest and most seminal Dubstep tracks, such as ‘Modem’ and ’3Kout’, his studio skills and style became further embossed. In early 2010 his tracks, ‘Rhythm’ and ‘Skanners’ spearheaded the productive assault that was the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1. For the next installment of the HENCH mixture, Jakes steps up with a double dose of his signature production style. Fasten all loose furniture to the floor and turn up the sub… A. THE DALEK – A familiar sound bite used in a less ordinary surroundings. Papa ‘Ench lures you in, then steps it up with chopping, high-tempo bass rhythm. Wait for the lead-synth to come in, creating an evil backdrop to the hollow steps ‘The Dalek’ lays down. This is the perfect tune to drop on an unexacting crowd – when that sinister baseline drops, they’ll be baying for the rewind again and again. AA. GOLD CHAIN – After a distinctive cameo on HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1, Gold Chain’s reputation precedes its release. Having also just been remixed by D*Style bosses, D*Minds, this production has been responsible for rumbling subs at dances across the country. In suitably Jakes fashion, Gold Chain enters with a hip-hop step to it. Layered vocal and lurching kick-snare leads to a driving and pulsing bassline. The outcome is a typically moody and distinctive roller from the HENCH. These tracks both feature on the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 2 (soon to be released). The Mixtape features unreleased tracks from the likes of Jakes, D*Minds, Mensah, Eddie K & Minus, Lost, Komonazmuk, Chasing Shadows and many more. Also including a full mix by Jakes,

This release is based on the Philips ‘Videopac G7000′ game console that came out back in 1978. New Mount Kimbie release “Carbonated EP” incoming

New Mount Kimbie release “Carbonated EP” incoming

Posted 03 May 2011 | By | Categories: news, video | No Comments

After releasing their debut album ‘Crooks and Lovers’ last summer to huge critical acclaim and racking up numerous end of year lists including the shortlist for Guardian’s First Album Award, plus sell out tours in North America, Australia and Europe, London duo Mount Kimbie announce the news of their next EP ‘Carbonated’.

Set for release on 27th June on the label Hot Flush, the EP follows the release of the ‘Blind Night Errand’ EP and will be the final release from the album.
‘Carbonated’, the lead track on the EP is joined by two previously unreleased tracks, the buoyant, effervescence of ‘Flux’ and ‘Bave’s Chords’, which showcase the lush, elegant percussive sound Mount Kimbie have become known for. ‘Bave’s Chords’ was recorded around their early EP ‘Maybes’ and ‘Flux’ was created during the album recordings.

Airhead, who’s shortly releasing his own album on Brainmath and is member of James Blakes’ live band, subtly twists ‘Carbonated’ with his remix, while Belgian producer & DJ Peter Van Hoesen creates a six minute dark techno rework for the dancefloor. ‘Adriatic’, also from ‘Crooks and Lovers’ is transformed completely by Klaus with his style of detailed production hitting the mark once more.

‘Crooks and Lovers’ defined Dominic Maker and Kai Campos as an original and exceptional duo whose musical output refuses to be pigeonholed. Abundant in paradoxes, the album floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno, post-rock, UK garage, shoegaze, indie and film scores to startling effect.

Mount Kimbie recently performed at the legendary Abbey Road in London for the new Channel 4 programme Abbey Road Debuts, see exclusive footage here:
http://www.dummymag.com/news/2011/04/24/mount-kimbie-maybes-live-video-exclusive/

One of the highlights at March’s SXSW and currently on a UK tour, Mount Kimbie will shortly head out to Europe before returning to the UK for Glastonbury, Reading, Leeds and Field Day Festivals with more to be announced soon.
