The ever on point Citrus Recordings is stepping up for its 5th artist LP. after having released the debut Albums of Mindscape & Jade wich all went on for critical acclaim it’s time for Citrus to get ready for its 3rd Artist Album. This time it’s time for the debut album of ‘Fourward’!Hailing straight from lower Austria the four men collective FOURWARD started out producing music in early 2007. The boys knew each other for quite a while and shared the love and passion for drumandbass music. For them it was always a main issue not to stick to any particular tiny subgenre only, but to develop a sound of their own. All members have different musical backgrounds which fit together perfectly and provide a great studio vibe. Days went by and the boys finished a couple of tunes properly and it wasn’t long until Austrian drumandbass producer duo Body&Soul showed interest in their works. Also international artists like BBCs very own Crissy Criss began to support their music giving them airplay on his radio show. As a result of their effort FOURWARD has released quality tunes on labels like Subsonik Sound, Planet Funk and Fokuz.The year 2010 they experienced the so called ‘breakthrough’ with releases on NASCA Recordings and Fokuz followed by an epic 12inch for the legendary label VIRUS Recordings!The guys definitely didn’t stop there and being on the road now broadened their horizon even further. Resulting in a series of tunes perfectly fitting together in this CD. Diversity and musicallity are keywords for this album. Listen from Low Blow to You and Me, quality drum ‘n bass!!

Pressed on Silver Vinyl. ASC returns to Samurai Red Seal to follow his prevous release ‘Machines’ / ‘Bleep Test’ (Redseal006). One of the most interesting artists left operating in Drum and Bass, James Clements again re writes the script for 170 BPM production with ‘Brainscan’. A sizzling slice of potent sonic futurism that cuts through systems like a focused lazer beam with a trail of bulging sub bass. ‘Zone One’ marries classic Krust and Photek tinges with a stuttering menace that could only come from ASC. Alaska returns from The Mesozoic Era wilderness and drops the 6th 12” on the ambient-jungle label Arctic Music. Boreal kicks off in true Alaska fashion with vocal loops, deep bass subs, ambient horns and layers of swirling pads sending Boreal into ambient bliss, but it’s the breaks that turn the track on its head with it’s crunchy and heavy patterns that keep the head nodding and feet shuffling.Isochime see’s Alaska return to his early Good Looking Records roots with it’s mesmerising pad swirls and guitar riffs. DMND004 – BTK & Optiv – Crawler / Music Within – 12″ Vinyl
It’s clear to see that the first half of 2011 has been an amazing one for Demand Records. With their first release jumping straight into the Beatport charts at #1, the second seeing Nymfo’s first ever remix and with the ink still drying on the license request for Demand’s third release to appear on the latest compilation CD from UKF, it’s clear that this label has achieved more than most start-ups. So it’s no real surprise that the fourth outing from the Swiss-owned imprint is something special too. Here we see Cause 4 Concern member and highly accomplished solo producer, Optiv, team up with Renegade Hardware’s BTK to craft two incredible drum & bass tracks with a completely unique feel. ‘Crawler’ features Presence Known on the beats who helps Optiv & BTK to craft a tribal drum-led slice of D&B with expertly placed sound FX and atmospheric touches. This is like a modern twist on the classic Virus sound, flexing delicate and understated beats with winding mid range synths and deep sub-bass. Impeccable!Backing it up is ‘Music Within’ featuring Podage & LaMeduza. Building slowly and gradually with powerful vocals, once again we’re treated to an education in the art of subtle drum & bass. If you’re looking for rinsed out amens and heavily distorted reese basslines then turn your attentions elsewhere, because this track is as beautiful as it is elegant. It won’t be turning any raves upside down, but that’s not really the point of good music, is it?

RS1107 – Klaus – Tusk EP – 12″ Vinyl
When I loaded this EP into my computer to pen some words on this cerebral cortex of an EP, it popped up next to an old recording I have of Klaus Schulze and in many ways it hints at a modern update on his sound. Klaus is not as his name denotes actually from Germany, but a classically trained young musician from London. In his short tenure as a producer, he’s already picked up plaudits from the great James Blake and Mount Kimbie. The latter loved him so much they called upon him to remix their recent Carbonated release. With debut EP Tusk we have an initial statement, which sounds too accomplished to be an entrance into the recorded world. Erudite and cultivated, the EP sets a tone for an early evening on a heavy system or an earlier morning on the headphones against an inner-city backdrop. It twists and turns throughout its four tracks. Layered drum patterns give way to distorted atmospherics permeated with that heavy, heavy bass. It’s almost Eno-esque in its structure, so I’m not going to break each track down here. Stick the whole thing on and experience it’s beauty.

Keeping things as fresh as ever, Kasra’s Modulations imprint picks up some more rocksteady beats from someone on the tip of everyone’s tongues at the moment, Dub Phizix. With other releases already on Soul:R, Fabio’s Creative Source, Ingredients and more this is one Manchester export that we’ll be hearing a lot more of in then future. ‘Break It’ kicks off with a simple intro with only a teasing glimpse of the bass that’s about to drop but when it does you’d best be ready! A stepper’s paradise then as the staccato break rolls on with deep sub and the gurgling mid-range that serve the ‘break it’ vocal perfectly. A very polished production indeed. ‘Four’ is all pitched down warning sirens and sinister pads from the off, creating an uneasy atmosphere for the crystal clear beats to bump into and move out across another slab of delicate but dangerous D&B for the deeper heads on the floor. Citrus presents the second part of the remixes series. After the HUGE succes of the SICKNESS remix by ZERO METHOD that was at number 1 at the Beatport drum’n bass charts we have the new remixes part by Subsonik. The A1 holds the Subsonik remix of the BLACK SUN EMPIRE classic CRASH BUNNY on Citrus024. Subsonik understands the sound of the original perfectly well and turns the neuro tech-step roller into an epic work, completely with new arranged intro with an emotional twist and big Neuro dnb basslines. Rrrrolling! On the flip we find the Subsonik remix of Citrus favourite ‘Rage and Rapture’ by Quadrant which featured on Citrus029. BUILD006 – Guido & Baobinga – Ballin’ / Bumba – 12″ Vinyl
If you thought we were spoiling you with the last Build release (Baobinga & Hyetal’s joint 12″, loved and played by pretty much everyone), then you should probably look away now. Yep, once again, the game has been upped most thoroughly: BUILD006 sees Guido, one of the most original talents to emerge from the fertile Bristol scene, team up with genre-blind bass-music badman (and label boss) Baobinga, for another collaborative 12″ of impeccable quality and taste… And of course, weird artwork.Pon the A, Ballin’ sees the pair take skeletal crunkstep as a starting point, before gradually building into an epic maelstrom of synth-led goodness, with an unexpected twist at the very end of its musical tail. Pinch’s first reaction on hearing was to demand a flat WAV to take to the cutting house – high praise indeed. Meanwhile, the AA, Bumba, may be familiar to fans of Jackmaster, who previewed an early version of the track on Mary Anne Hobbs’ Radio1 show back in April 2010. Slowing the tempo slightly, and with layers of custom-built percussion adding delicious ear-candy to the emotive collection of synths, strings and marimbas (!), this is the kind of tune where, as was once said about Derrick May’s DJing, you don’t know whether to dance or cry. We would recommend doing both, and then maybe having a sit down… Cos shortly after this release, Build will be dropping ‘Baobinga & Co. – Joint Ventures’, a full CDs worth of fresh collaborations with the cream of the British bass music scene. Beaumont, alias Michael Rintoul, is a young Scottish producer and creator of hypnotic R&B dream pop-soundtracks for late night bliss-outs. Described by inimitable Brighton- based blog 20jazzfunkgreats as having produced, “by a strike of genius and inspiration”, the authentic soundtrack to “a really cool Z-series 80s thriller”, Kinnego is proud to present his debut release, “Blush Response”.Opening track “Tokyo” sets the scene, a wistful night-time groove with almost dubstep intentions and layers of subtly building melody. “Foreign Intrigue” combines chillwave textures with heavy sub-bass and halftime drums into a sweetly composed piece of synth pop, full of Europhile yearning. “Aventurescence” is a talkbox-driven slowgroove that ends in waves of melodic synth bliss. “Lucky” returns to the atmospheric cityscape conjured by “Tokyo”, sounding like dubstep as made on a Fairlight in 1982, full of emotion and breathless invocations. The most overtly vocal track, “Midnight” seems to reference 80s Marvin Gaye with its drum machine and electronic piano palette and lovelorn emotional delivery. Recalling a more minimal Eurythmics, “Flesh + Blood” blends guitars and synthesized cellos into a desirous, heartbroken pop song for hopeless romantics. And closing the EP, title track “Blush Response” begins in layers of continental VHS hiss and jaunty melody before settling into a headnodding groove adorned with lush vocals and retriggered samples. For Davey Jones’ second voyage, we journey to the other side of the Atlantic to bring you two dark percussive machinations by Brooklyn’s Sharmaji and DJ Wade. Best known as two members of the Sub Swara crew, who released their album “Triggers” to critical acclaim earlier this year, this release finds them exploring more mysterious territory. Sharmaji goes in alone on the A-side with a unique take on the current “percussion and bass” sound with a distinctly darker and warmer edge. A favourite of the likes of Ben UFO, this one does some serious dancefloor damage. The B side goes darker still, with an almost Shackleton-like take on tribal minimalism, disclosing Sharmaji’s day job as a professional Tabla session musician.

Initially as ravers, then DJs, and now as producers, they have been witness to the progression of the various sub genres that are now present in today’s spectrum of drum & bass music. After releases individually and collectively on several different labels Dual Process are ready to launch their own label aimed at the particular sub genre that they have successfully played in raves, clubs and on radio for the last few years.Straight up, dance floor, jump up is what’s going to be on offer from Audio Hostage Records, and to kick things off we have two heavy slices of face churning, bass ridden, ignorance capable of setting MC’s to self destruct and levelling any sound system.The A. side DRUGS is inspired by the Essex gangster scene that emerged around the early days of rave music. The eerie bleeped out intro soon leads on to brain twisting pulsation of gurgling, stuttering basslines and, for just a few bars, some dubstep breaks to make sure the substance takes hold. Remember, too much of a good thing can be dangerous.The AA. side THUGS is a little more funky but still with a hard edge. Drawing on influences from gangster rap, the bouncy bassline and bongos are backed up with police sirens, gunshots and sporadic hip hop lyrics. Something for the thugs to bounce to but still heavy enough to test any system. OH MY DAYS!!! Subtrakt drops the motherload with an album packed with the deepest and finest cuts of sub-driven machine step, by the masters and bringers of 1/4 step Current Value & Dean Rodell – Machine Code!!!’Environments’ has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry’s factory, mixing up machine funk in a 1/4 step style with the likes of the already hailed classic ‘Machine Freak’ and the floor pounding “Circadian,” blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . ‘In the Shell’ and ‘Confessions’ offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code’s  ‘Environments’ – ‘Kjg’ is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. ‘The Shadow’ is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass room to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake. Rob Ellis, AKA Pinch is the owner of one of the original and highly influential Dubstep labels Tectonic who have signed, developed and released music from some of the scene’s biggest acts such as Joker, 2562, Cyrus, Digital Mystikz, Skream, Jack Sparrow and of course Pinch. Pinch is also founder of Subloaded, Bristol’s finest Bass rave, who has recently celebrated their 6th Birthday. This is Pinch’s first release on Mala’s DEEP MEDi imprint and we feel it’s his best work to date, we’ll sure you’ll agree. ‘Swish’ has been played relentlessly by Mala over the last year as well as a select lucky few able to get their hands on it such as Skream, Loefah, Youngsta and V.I.V.E.K. ‘Swish’ is classic Pinch, dark, moody and sparse, heavily influenced by Techno, with a sub- bass and kick to destroy any bass bin, pure soundsystem music. ‘Tunnel Home’ on the flip sees Pinch in experimental mode switching up the tempo, 155. This still has the Pinch trademark darkness and efx’s but oozes a stealthily undercurrent and coldness with its complex drum programming and industrial approach, reminiscent of early Photek output.

HF029 – Sigha – Sigha EP – 12″ Vinyl
Hotflush presents its fifth release from rising producer Sigha. This EP continues his progression into subterranean techno hauntings. Since his debut on the imprint in early 2009, Sigha has accumulated support from DJs across the electronic sphere such as Francois K, Brendon Moeller, Marcel Dettmann, Ben Klock, Peter van Hoesen, James Ruskin, and many others. With this release he takes a more direct approach that maintains the cavernous atmosphere and spatial tension of his previous work on Hotflush and his own label Our Circula Sound, resulting in a collection of club tracks that evolve and sizzle with burning tenacity, ultimately bursting into the beatless closer that echoes about in an otherworldly space.

TR003 – Benton / Arc 88 – Having Fun / 2 Many – 12″ Vinyl
Started in 2005 as collaboration with a friend, Terrain records had releases from Manchester artists S.N.O & Omen, with remixes from a young Skream, and N-Type. The label lay dormant for 5 years, but for 2011 N-Type has decided to relaunch the label, focusing on 140bpm jungle & hardcore influenced dubstep. For the 3rd release on the label, N-type presents two young artists with a love for the oldskool hardcore junglist sound Benton and ARC 88. A side ‘Having Fun’ by Benton is reminiscent of early Jungle, with rolling amen breaks, thunderous Reece bassline, and classic pitched up female vocals. This tune has been a staple in N-types dubplate collection AA Side ‘2 Many’ by ARC 88 is a dancehall killah! 140bpm jungle rinser, featuring ragga vocals and a euphoric breakdown. Featured on the new Wheel & Deal Records album mix by DJ N-Type, this track is a standard reload. Both tracks are currently being battered by N-Type, Skream, Dismantle, Walsh, Bluesy, Chefal and Cluekid to name a few.

2011 sees the ever-prolific Milyoo stretching out from his Kentucky base, heading for world domination and gracing South-East London’s favourite Cassette Library with his presence along the way. Biogram v2 locks disparate vocal fragments and found sounds into a low-down, cranky House groove, peppered with a boogie down bassline and sweeping, straight-outta-Chi-Town strings. For the flipside, the in-house WNCL remix department selects a few choice clippings from the original to present a jam tailored for the trackheads with their feet on the dancefloor.

After few months of silence we are back with a new massive 12”. This time it’s Jacky Murda and Max Powa, a duo from Barcelona that goes by the name of JingBong Ting. After many years on the jungle scene, in 2006 Jacky started the Little Island project, collaborating in Brighton and Barcelona with UK producer Kion on dubby, deep, rootsy material. Tunes by Kion & Murda started to get rotation in crucial UK dances like DMZ, >>FWD , and SuperDubPressure with djs like Mala, Rusko, Tes La Rok, Joe Nice, Nick Argon, BunZer0, Noah D, Daddy G, N-Type and Itchy Robot picking up on the Little Island sound. 2009 also marked the creation of the “JingBong Ting”, a live act comprised of Jacky Murda and Max Powa. JingBong Ting’s first release dropped in 2010 on WAR records, and the second release , complete with video, “Sundown” featuring Top Cat in May 2011. On the Flip you can find a heavy Ragga-Jungle remix by HoT a DJ and Producerliving in Tula, Russia. In 2009 his remix of „Policeman and Soldiers” appeared on the famous jungle label JungleXpeditions. Today HoT continues to push his sound to the worldwide ragga-jungle massive.

RS1106 – Vondelpark – Nyc Stuff & Nyc Bags Ep – 12″ Vinyl
Formed last spring after a trip to LA by Lewis Rainsbury, Alex Bailey and Matt Law, Vondelpark’s early work found release on the Sauna EP, a record that explored the emotional blankness of modern life – plane travel, jet lag, interaction and long distance relationships, yet crackling between Lewis’ haunted voice and haunting vocal samples, Sauna was a work of precocious emotional depth and density. Home recorded and lo-fi, it blended cut-and-paste sampled beats and longingly minimal guitar lines, yet the complexity of arrangements and layers of sounds were made to feel natural and simplistic. Their second EP, nyc bags and nyc stuff, develops on the musical themes of Sauna. Still anchored by Lewis’ tender vocals it’s more abstract in its sampling and feels more musically cohesive. Rather than dealing with the emotional alienation of modernity nyc bags instead feels deeply personal, an exploration of the internal rather than external. Opening track ‘TV’ maybe best exemplifies their use of samples and the way they are built around original work, constructing stuttering melodic evocations that grow from a single repetitive loop to mingle with a sparkling guitar and implacable snatches of vocals. When the beats kick in over the refrain of ‘Colder, faster, TV’ it climaxes so subtly it could almost be missed. Second track ‘Feat B’ is the EP’s most straightforward, almost encroaching on r’n’b in its structure and influence, drawing on the genre’s sentimentality and slow jams and underpinned by a female vocal. Like much of the work on nyc bags the vocals are manipulated in a way that the original sense of what’s been used, sampled and recorded is deviated from to leave just its abstract imprint and after listening for long enough the distinction between original recording and sampling becomes blurred beyond recognition. Like ‘Feat B’, ‘Camels’ also takes something from r’n’b, but more conspicuously draws on the beats of the UK underground.

Kapsize is very proud to present our next release from none other than international dubstep superstar – BENGA! A man who should need little introduction – Benga has been famously instrumental in shepherding dubstep music from its inception almost 10 years ago, right through to the global phenomenon it has become now. Having stormed the charts and festivals recently as one third of the mighty Magnetic Man, Benga is still able to walk a delicate tightrope – consistently providing us with credible underground dancefloor music with an accessible edge. The two cuts Benga lets loose here on Kapsize, ‘Faithless’ and ‘Acid Lie’, exemplify this finely tuned understanding of how to work a dancefloor into a frenzy without losing one’s cool.So onto the music… ‘Faithless’ has been a staple of Joker’s sets for several months now – a solid power anthem of a tune. Building up initially with a 4/4 kick pattern and fast chopping cyber samples, ‘Faithless’ soon introduces a Prodigy-esque riff – something that sonically sits between a distorted guitar sample and futuristic synth sound – before laying down the sub-heavypressure of the full drop. A massive club tune by even Benga’s own standards! Flip then for the equally excellent ‘Acid Lie’ which leads with a looping, low-slung and sleezy live bass line – think something from the soundtrack to Kill Bill or Snatch, warning the imminent presence of some bad dudes! Rising textures bring in the leading acid riff line which continues to morph dynamically over the thundering sub bass. A retro rave reference with a very futuristic twist – one for the heads and the ravers alike!

IME027 – El Kid – Le Corbusier / 112 – 12″ Vinyl
The latest Immerse cut sees the label tapping once again into the fertile waters of haunting, leftfield 4/4, showcasing the hitherto unknown talents of El Kid. The eagle-eared out there may have picked up on the Young Echo radio show, which features Sam Kidel (to his folks) alongside West-country compatriots Kahn, Vessel and Zhou showcasing their new tracks and mixes. For most though, this will be the first they hear of the Bristol-born, Brighton-based producer. On both tracks the synthetic sheen of Detroit techno gets refigured into an almost downtempo kind of house music. The melody is king, whatever sonic texture it might manifest in, leaving you with ample layers to get engrossed in. That same quintessential yearning quality ensures that these first offerings from El Kid fit perfectly into the Immerse canon. It’ll shake the right kind of dancefloor, but it’ll also tug at the right kind of heart-strings as well.

R1003 – R1 Ryders – Full System EP – 12″ Vinyl
Favourites of everyone from Sinden to Mary Anne Hobbs, R1 Ryders follow up the excellent Full Throttle EP with this newie from their self-titled label. Mixing grime, tech and UKF perfectly, these tunes will slot into a huge range of DJ boxes – the awesome “On Your Marks” especially, with its lazer-guided synth melodies, heavy wobble bass and funkified drums making it a real standout. The strings ‘n’ bounce of “Cyber” is similarly epic, while the itchy tech-funk of “Pop Shit Off” is frankly begging to have the acapella from Ludacris’ “What’s Your Fantasy” plastered over it – such is the similarity between their bassy stabs and off-kilter rhythms.

OH MY DAYS!!! Subtrakt drops the motherload with an album packed with the deepest and finest cuts of sub-driven machine step, by the masters and bringers of 1/4 step Current Value & Dean Rodell – Machine Code!!!’Environments’ has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry’s factory, mixing up machine funk in a 1/4 step style with the likes of the already hailed classic ‘Machine Freak’ and the floor pounding “Circadian,” blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . ‘In the Shell’ and ‘Confessions’ offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code’s  ‘Environments’ – ‘Kjg’ is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. ‘The Shadow’ is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass room to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake. Hailing from Amsterdam, Nymfo, aka Bardo Camp has been a lynchpin in the dutch drum and bass scene for over a decade including best dutch d&b DJ in 2005. Previously having worked closely alongside Icicle, including their classic Ram release “Franky Mountain”, Bardo has released many solo and collaborative tunes on labels far and wide including, Dispatch, Critical, Ram, C.I.A. 31, Inneractive and Samurai. Through the years Nymfo has developed his own specific sound of characteristic hard driving bass, spanking funky drums and hooky motifs. It is an addictive and hypnotic sound suitable for just about any set , car drive or home listen. Think Icicle, Spectrasoul, Ulterior Motive, Jubei, Ed Rush & Optical but with more than enough of his own style to make Nymfo a standout in todays swamp of mediocre d&b.

East meets West as Revolution returns for our 22nd release. In the red corner straight out of Russia we’re pleased to welcome Enei and Eastcolors to the Revolution army. These artists now need little introduction after massive singles on Hospital and Critical. ‘Home’ is one of those rare tracks that manages to combine the sublime with the grime. Spring 2006 was both cruel and exciting. Radiating hot Helsinki nights, too much light and vivid, restless dreams about Music. While chucking down a glass of cheap brandy in a local bar the idea finally materialised: Let’s start a record label! A label that would bring people together. Proud people. People thinking of Music. People doing their own thing in their own way in their own basements. And most importantly, people who understood the meaning of space between notes. After 5 years, 16 records, 85 tracks and 44 artists from 13 countries it goes without saying that those restless dreams became reality. And so did the Music. HARMONIA FAMILY ALBUM includes 12 artists from 7 countries giving their own interpretations of skweee, the synthetic Scandinavian funk. This double album features both skweee -innovators  and brilliant second generation rookies like Finnish dub specialist Levon Zoltar and Japanese child prodigy Neo Hetare. The process of compiling these twelve tracks took more than six months, since each track was carefully handpicked from a selection of more than hundred songs from around the world. Harmonia’s previous ‘Skandinavian Skweee Vol. I &II’ and ‘International Skweee Vol. I&II’ -compilations were immediately sold out after release and nowadays go up to 100 euros on internet. Because skweee owes so much to the so-called world music, we thought of taking the whole thing to the next level and asked our artists to make their own versions of ‘ethnic’ music. As you will soon hear, the idea took off like a lazer beam in an Ethiopian desert. The results are breathtaking: music so contemporary yet still so archaic! It gives a great deal of pleasure to the listener to hover through the native American mantras of BMMB’s Huuhka-Eno, tribal chanting of Ransta Congregate  and slavic p-funk of Eero Johannes. AnD are a duo living in Manchester, UK. They’ve released a split 12” with 16 Bit on Mindset in 2009, the second 12” on Black Sun Records that came out recently and a couple of 12“s on Horizontal Ground. They sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in Techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. I selected three of those tracks to appear on this EP, ranging between 130 and 135 BPM.“Algorythmic Love” is probably the most dancefloor orientated of the three. A percussive monster with a huge kick drum, but that doesn’t work around the 4/4 template. The lush chords that creep in towards the end of the tune bring out a depth that’s alluded to but never revealed fully in the first half.“Brother From Another Mother” feels a lot slower but is around the same speed. The drums are staccato and restrained with perfect placement of hits around some ethereal delay heavy melody and huge bass.“Swing Me” refocuses on the dancefloor but rather than using prominent drums to that end it employs twisting synth melodies to generate pace and energy.Tom Dicicco is a Techno producer also based in Manchester. When AnD told me that they knew him and that he’d be up for doing a remix I jumped at the chance; Tom’s first 12” on Baud and his track on Jonas Kopp’s “Music From The Basement” compilation blew me away. His “Late Night Dub” of “Brother From Another Mother” turns the tune into a 124 BPM Techno track, powered by some very prominent Hi Hat work and laced with beautiful delay riddled melody. To me it sounds like a fusion of Dub Techno and House, complimenting the original tracks on the EP perfectly.Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London

Drums Of Death is the alter-ego of Colin Bailey and as his renowned and energetic live performances go from strength to strength and take him round the world he has continually exceeded all expectations.Drums of Death emerged from London’s club scene in early 2008 and signed to Joe Goddard from Hot Chip’s record label and party crew, Greco-Roman. Coming off the back off a sustained period of acclaim as one half of Instramental (an act who you haven’t heard the last of) we’re incandescently proud to debut longtime 3024 alumni Damon Kirkham’s first solo material as Jon Convex with a sound that strikes off in a direction entirely of its own, while mirroring the roaming analogue methodology of his group’s latter day work.Opener ‘Convexations’ raises the curtain with traces of Yamaha fog and a hollowed out kick before a bassline fusing Giorgio Moroder with The Human Centipede rears up to provide unrelenting forward momentum. Glimpses of dialogue warped to the point of gibberish, an ever growing chorus of muttering percussive synths and a zero gravity drop complete the picture of a ride in cattle class all the way to Pittsburgh.’Falling Again’ dials back its predecessor’s intensity, evoking a robotic production line take on UKG. A metronomic 2-step rhythm forms the basis for a replicant diva’s final performance while another strikingly organic bass line spends the duration of the track expanding and arcing with all the grace of a particularly low frequency solar flare.Exclusive to the digital version is ‘Order Into Chaos’. The first Jon Convex track we heard, a particularly intense 3024 board meeting saw it declared too good to leave sitting on the shelf. We were adamant: “no ‘Wut’ remixes”. But when Vonstroke comes knocking you let him in!Driven by CVS’ own enthusiasm for Girl Unit’s 2010 anthem, the Dirty Bird label boss submitted to us three different versions of his remix, each progressively more stripped down. All three transform ‘Wut’ from gleaming crunk anthem to bass-driven house metatool, expanding on its raw big-room essence. Here we release two of the three versions. On side A Vonstroke’s “Undressed” mix borrows Girl Unit’s synth arrangements and vocal tics, keeping all the ecstasy and emotion of the original for its epic swells, which build up to huge cavernous drops of pitched Miami bass hits and clattering 808s. Quintessentially CVS, this is the sound of Night Slugs x Dirty Bird. On side AA is the “Butt Naked Mix” (title picked by Vonstroke in true DB style). This version relates to the original only in the most spectral sense, stripping away almost all of Girl Unit’s stems and melodic elements. The result is a beautifully restrained rhythm track, a machine-like big-room dub that builds and drops so elegantly yet so devastatingly. The work of a true master!

Tes gives a taste of his old junglist roots on 140bpm amen roller ‘Secrets’ and as a follow-up tests his hands on hip hop vibes in ‘Malfunction’. ‘Tribal Ting’ and ‘Spiritual Ting’ showcase the more known Tes La Rok dubwise production and his profound love to dig dub stepper sounds. ‘What’ and ‘From The Shadows’ combine deep & beautiful atmospheres with post-garage drums patterns and subheavy basslines. To bring the album to a finale and give a hint of the future, ‘Turn It Up’ brings in chopped vocals and raw 808 bass. Coming from the land of three months of nearly zero sunlight it is by no means a surprise that this album is deep, dark and futuristic. From the music to the artwork there’s a touch of Bladerunner and Alien. These tracks are being championed by the main players such as Distance, N-Type, Kryptic, Minds, Desto, Pinch, Addison Groove and Cyrus.

MEDI046 – Clouds – A Lot Of Calls From No One Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy, full colour sleeve, 180g pressing. Clouds are a Finnish electronic music production team that consists of Tommi Liikka and Samuli Tanner. Tommi is a Helsinki native and Samuli comes from a small village deep in rural Finland. The pair met through mutual friends in 1999, and ever since planned on producing music together, hindered by both working on various projects and shows of their own. The plan was finally realised after a string of coincidences and happy accidents led them to sharing a house in the northern suburbs of Helsinki. This is the 3rd release from Clouds on Deep Medi Musik, the follow up to ‘Protecting Hands Pt1&2’.

Dreadnought is the collaborative project between Untold (Hemlock / Hessle Audio) and Samuel Chase (Samuel and the Dragon). The duo’s debut release is the vinyl only ‘Caroline EP’, which features four tracks that mark the genesis of Dreadnought as well as a taster of how the pair’s sound is developing. The individually numbered vinyl-only EP is being pressed in a limited run – there will be no repress. The track ‘Meteorite’ was recently named X-Posure Hot One by Xfm’s John Kennedy with further support coming from Huw Stephens and Mary Anne Hobbs.

Finish copy, James Blake returns to the label that gave him his debut release with two brand new sub heavy club tracks. Hemlock were responsible for his Air And The Lack Thereof single back in 2009. Neither ‘Order’ or ‘Pan’ have appeared on Blake’s soulful, electronic self-titled album from this year; the new material sees the return of Blake into the more sparse, experimental and wobbling bass heavy sound of his earlier work.

Finish copy, Berkane Sol present the vinyl debut of Erra. Erra comes bursting through your speakers with a riot of tuff drums and sweet melody – its like the sound of someone who’s rinsed their console so much that its gone way beyond high scores and into a full on system meltdown. ‘Stax’ starts out with a dreamy intro which leads into the rudest of wake up calls – a proper peak-time jackin’ synth stab married to a smartly evolved bassline, all driven by concussive garage flavoured rhythms. ‘Jookup’ on the flip again demonstrates Erra’s irresistible talent for blending blissful keys with hectic dancefloor moments, this time really bringing the sickly grime synths to the front, with some cute but disembodied vocals punctuating the action. The 12” follows up Erra’s popular L2S digital release ‘Cake Music’, and neatly shows off this young producers rapid development. PLATTER002 – S-Max & Spatial – Ms. Rosen Dub / Corti – 12″ Vinyl
The second serving from Schmorgasbord brings together two relatively disparate and unrelated artists, but who both share a uniquely twisted approach to making music. S-Max has been doing his thing for some time, running legendary home all things bizarre in house and techno, Boogizm, and releasing a special kind of groove on labels such as Telegraph, 7th City and Karloff. His original track, ‘Ms. Rosen Dub’, swaggers and sways with the spirit of classic Yorkshire bleeps and bass. The groove is house, but the spirit of adventure is most definitely techno. His remix of Spatial’s ‘Corti’ takes a very different approach, taking a rolling, jungle-like approach to dubstep and nailing it to the groove with stabbing bass notes. Spatial leapt onto the bass music radar late 2008 with his shadowy Infrasonics imprint, and quickly snapped heads with his crisp, refined approach to 2-step rhythms. Since then he’s done things on his own terms, only releasing for himself and mutating his sound over a series of 10”s. ‘Corti’ perfectly demonstrates Spatials unconventional tendencies, lurching and buckling around a perfectly honed splatter of beats, off-centre synths and delirious vocal snippets. Meanwhile on his remix of S-Max, Spatial flips the script once again with a stomping, swung techno angle that hammers the original into an uptempo, fist-pumping banger.

OUTNL001 – Kastil – Dusty Edits – 12″ Vinyl
File under Disco Edits. As an extension of their Dutch electronic music website Outernational.nl, we present you the newly born imprint Outernational Recordings. The kick off for this unique vinyl series is by Basque County native Kastil who sets the right tone with three wonderful Disco edits at a mid-tempo / slomo pace. Since uploading these tracks to his SoundCloud page, the feedback has been enormous. Side A contains the long, slow and loopy ‘Back to Philadelphia’, where Kastil cleverly plays with the vocals and delay and creates a highly tense build up. There’s no doubt that some large players in the very popular Disco edit culture will play this one out. On the B1 side you find the track ‘SMD’. A track which received great feedback by some key figures on SoundCloud. This track is the ultimate pre-lude for the summer. Fortunately, this is being released just early enough to enjoy this during the European and Northern American summer. With again beautiful vocals floating through the track, this track definitely reminds one of a hot day in the local park. The B2 track is called ‘Rolls Royce’. Perfect as the last track of this release since it’s a long edit which ends with a very atmospheric piano solo that keeps on floating through the last few minutes of the track. All and all, these edits will definitely make some heads turn after the date of release. RWINA013 – Desto – Makowrap EP – 12″ Vinyl
Rwina Records follows up Doshy’s unforgettable ‘Suspiria’ EP with yet another massive and dramatic A-side, this time from Finnish dubstep producer Desto.  Like ‘Suspiria’, Desto’s ‘Makowrap’ is all about uncompromising focus, exacting precision and killer melodies, with the normally hyperactive producer temporarily shelving his loopy constructions and frantic arpeggios and instead favouring a measured, slowly building progression instead.  Desto’s volatile energy is channelled into bursts of epic, triumphant melody, undeniably anthemic each and every single time they stream out blindingly over the track’s weighty kick, a reminder that this is, in fact, bass music after all.  The hushed chords and skittering, exaggerated snares that dribble and melt all over the track put a noticeably hip-hop slant that permeates the rest of the EP.The other two tracks hearken back to the usual kind of colourful dubstep Desto is associated with, all arpeggiated fireworks and topsy-turvy synth chords. ‘Neptune’ staggers down a descending progression into plateaus of sub-bass throb as synths twinkle and shoot out from the empty spaces, playful percussive accents peeking out mischievously, the sound of drum machines misbehaving.  The other track on the flipside focus around vocal samples, with ‘Overkrookd’ attacking a frightened vocal with monotonous LFO stabs that occasionally break through into an undersea world of squiggling chords and bubbling melodies, Jokeresque majesty that quickly flatlines back into the track’s unforgiving mechano-skank.Finally, as an exclusive extra digital; ‘React’ drops somersaulting breakbeats over more of those aqueous 8-bit synths, alternately trilling gently and smearing themselves across the wet, mouldy canvas.  While it’s quite possibly the label’s most dubstep-centric release yet, Desto’s ‘Makowrap’ is just another in a series of masterful releases combining the most colourful and vibrant sectors of dubstep and grime with hip-hop swagger, melodically rich while keeping them fully focused on the dancefloor.
