Dom & Roland presents “The Big Bang LP”

Posted 31 August 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Dom of Dom & Roland needs no introduction. With his Roland sampler, he has been at the apex of drum and bass since the mid 90ʻs. One of the original pioneers of the techstep sound. NME once called him the George Lucas of the scene, due to his unfaltering ability to provide the listener with an auralʼgasm of epic soundscapes inspired by the visuals of a thousand sci-fi movies.

The Big Bang will be his fifth album and builds upon a sturdy framework of singles, albums and remixes going right back to when he was signed to Moving Shadow with itʼs now legendary cult status. His previous album credits read like a whoʼs who of electronic music and have featured collaborations with creative masterminds like Optical, Matrix, Hive, Rob Playford, Noisia and Amon Tobin.

Dom & Roland

This album being completely solo is a departure from his previous four. In Domʼs own words “Apart from being something Iʼve never done before, I wanted to get back to what I originally loved about DnB back in the late 90ʼs and turn it into something more modern whilst retaining full control of the creation myself. I was also interested to see if there was still a place for the kind of dirty funk that Iʼm into in todays ultra clean digital world” So what do you get? “Epic Lucusʼesque monsters” Flux and Enforced , “Tearouts” 2097 and Paralax, “Steppers” Cigars n Money and Terminate , “Neurofunkin” Nostradamus, Capsicum and Footnotes, “Rollers” Dune and Raptor and not forgetting a Dom trademark “Vocal Amen Smasher” Electric Smile VIP. It covers all bases of the music that has made Dom what he is today and if todays current big name DJʼs are to be believed, it will be remembered as one of his best. You only have to search for the youtube video of DJ Marky “broking out” to Enforced which he played as his last tune at Global Gathering this year to see the impact this album will have this year and for the years to come.

Drum and bass is a worldwide thing and Celsius keeps on delivering good music no mather where it was made. BULB straight from Vladimir Russia teaming up with Germany’s most hyped mc FAVA. Nice spaced out intro with vocals from the FAVA leading way to the rolling sounds of a melodic-bomb. Keep an eye on this man. He is already getting noticed with his latest outing appearing in Markus Intalex Soulution Radio and Microfunk podcast. His ‘Distinctions of the same’ tune with Tiiu vocals, appeared in Hospital June Democast and in 2011 it was released on Med School’s ‘New Blood 011′ compilation. For the flip we have Command Strange straight from Kazakhstan! We all know his very impressive debut album ‘Soul Booster’ still available from FOKUZ recordings. REDSEAL012B – Calibre – Hummer EP – 12″ Vinyl
Black vinyl edition. The ‘Hummer’ EP is the follow up to the successful ‘Judgement Day’ EP by Calibre for Samurai Red Seal and has been compiled to represent a cross section of Calibre’s versatile musical styles. The ‘Hummer’ EP is harder edged musically and perhaps more dancefloor focused than his more recent releases, but as always the quality quotient is 100%. From the soaring bass of ‘Hummer’, to the controversial dancefloor groove of ‘Dog Shit’ and the more traditional soulful mastery of ‘Touch Me’ and ‘Free My Mind’, this EP truly has it all. Support from DJ Marky, Marcus Intalex, Friction, dBridge, Flight, Spectrasoul, Lenzman, London Elektricity, Fabio, Doc Scott, Total Science and a whole lot more.

RWINA013 – Desto – Makowrap EP – 12″ Vinyl
Rwina Records follows up Doshy’s unforgettable ‘Suspiria’ EP with yet another massive and dramatic A-side, this time from Finnish dubstep producer Desto.  Like ‘Suspiria’, Desto’s ‘Makowrap’ is all about uncompromising focus, exacting precision and killer melodies, with the normally hyperactive producer temporarily shelving his loopy constructions and frantic arpeggios and instead favouring a measured, slowly building progression instead.  Desto’s volatile energy is channelled into bursts of epic, triumphant melody, undeniably anthemic each and every single time they stream out blindingly over the track’s weighty kick, a reminder that this is, in fact, bass music after all.  The hushed chords and skittering, exaggerated snares that dribble and melt all over the track put a noticeably hip-hop slant that permeates the rest of the EP. The other two tracks hearken back to the usual kind of colourful dubstep Desto is associated with, all arpeggiated fireworks and topsy-turvy synth chords. ‘Neptune’ staggers down a descending progression into plateaus of sub-bass throb as synths twinkle and shoot out from the empty spaces, playful percussive accents peeking out mischievously, the sound of drum machines misbehaving.  The other track on the flipside focus around vocal samples, with ‘Overkrookd’ attacking a frightened vocal with monotonous LFO stabs that occasionally break through into an undersea world of squiggling chords and bubbling melodies, Jokeresque majesty that quickly flatlines back into the track’s unforgiving mechano-skank. Finally, as an exclusive extra digital; ‘React’ drops somersaulting breakbeats over more of those aqueous 8-bit synths, alternately trilling gently and smearing themselves across the wet, mouldy canvas.  While it’s quite possibly the label’s most dubstep-centric release yet, Desto’s ‘Makowrap’ is just another in a series of masterful releases combining the most colourful and vibrant sectors of dubstep and grime with hip-hop swagger, melodically rich while keeping them fully focused on the dancefloor.

EI017 – Evol Intent – Under (Feat Jackie B) / Raw Bass Material – 12″ Vinyl
A side ‘’Under’ from Evol Intent featuring a vocals from singer/song writer Jackie B. This dubstep track is dark, sexy, melodic, and poppy, with a bass riff and drums that encourages you to urgently to hit the dance floor, and shake your ass. The vocals are sexy and consistent. She reminds me of Esthero in how she can make underground production sound so polished. Yet she can take you places emotionally because she makes intelligent choices her vocal tonality. The production is dark, and sounds like a eerie episode of a Twin Peaks score. You will be hearing lots more music from her really soon. She’s also a great producer as well. (remember where you heard it first.) Look out for more from Evol Intent, and Jackie B in the near future.

CHST013 – District – Haymaker / 3.5 Grams – 12″ Vinyl
Coventry based producer, District (aka Daniel Mills) is a relative newcomer to the dubstep scene. Focusing primarily on the deeper and darker tones that surrounded him through playing in metal bands as a teenager, his productions have earnt early support from the likes of Distance and Youngsta. Districts own take on bass music harks back to the genres earlier days, employing a stripped back and doom-laden attitude to beats and bass. 2011 see’s District join the Chestplate Records family, a label led by one of the scenes originators DJ Distance. As well as working on individual musical projects, District’s collaborative work with label peer and long-time friend Sleeper blends their shared vision on darker sounds, creating atmospheric and sub frequency-heavy rollers. District’s first release comes in the form of CHST013, a 12″ single on Chestplate comprising of the tracks ’3.5 grams’ and ‘Haymaker’, showcasing the producers developing skills and intent. Both tracks have seen heavy rotation via radio support on Radio 1xtra, Rinse.FM and Get Darker as well as maintaining regular plays in the sets of Distance, Tunnidge and Jack Sparrow over the last 12 months. Looking to the future, District plans to work more with Sleeper, developing their production style as well as making live appearances on Rinse.FM, guest mixing for Kongkrete Bass’s seminal Kongkast podcast series and in clubs.

DP056 – The Others – First Flight EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Limited Edition 500 pressing in full colour gatefold sleeve. The Others’ prolific work rate and consistently high quality output has made him the most released artist on Dub Police and an integral part of the label, so we are proud to announce that he is returning once again with a brand new six track EP for the label, ‘First Flight’. Opening the EP is title track ‘First Flight’, a fiery rave mutation for the bass generation that plays the ecstatic synth lines off against a snarling beast of a bassline. Next up, ‘Planet X’ is a futuristic sonic journey that packs a serious punch. Swinging and hitting in all the right places, taut technoid synths, snapping drums and jagged shards of intertwining basslines sweep through this lethal track. This is followed by ‘Say To You’ which showcases The Others’ versatility perfectly, switching from the 4×4 drum pattern and uplifting pads into a tough half-step beat, growling bassline and rave-inflected chord sequences. Completing the vinyl package is ‘Break Your Neck’ with Trolley Snatcha, a deadly monster of a track cutting open the heavyweight swathes of bass with the jarring drum patterns – This is going to be causing some serious damage! The EP finishes with digital only track ‘Skynet’, which opens with rattling drum breaks and eerie pads before dropping into a maniacal bassline that bursts through the track with a hyperactive energy that it is impossible to resist. With the EP, you will also be able to get hard as nails free track ‘Get Outta Here’. As well as a slew of releases for Dub Police Alex Crawford, AKA The Others, has released on a number of other revered labels including Boka, Tempa and Wheel & Deal and remixed the likes of Above & Beyond, Pyramid and Breakage. Pair this with a hectic touring schedule that regularly takes him all over the world and you have one of the hardest working artists in dubstep, who rightfully stands at the forefront of the fast-moving scene.

MMAKEM001 – George FitzGerald – Fernweh / Hearts – 12″ Vinyl
ManMakeMusic first made their name running a series of eponymous parties in London’s East End which showcased the best of low-end heavy electronic music. Given that the collective contained within their ranks a number of budding producers, the step over to label territory was always on the cards. George FitzGerald, who heads up the label, was behind the crew’s first mysterious release earlier this year, a refix of Groove Theory’s ‘Tell Me’ that sold-out within a matter of days. ManMakeMusic are now back for more, beginning the label series in earnest with some original material from George that sums up what these guys have been about from the beginning: real-deal dance music that tracks the borderlines of house, garage and techno. George’s releases on Hotflush and Aus this year have consolidated his reputation as one of a small set of producers from London whose tracks translate in to dancefloor capital outside of British borders. This record travels deeper in to the territory of house-dubstep cross-pollination than George’s previous excursions. A-side ‘Fernweh’ is an intricate work of ecstatic synths tempered with a rock solid groove that betrays George’s UK sensibilities. On the flip, ‘Hearts’ ramps up the energy levels with tough percussion and the trademark FitzGerald vocal wizardry.

LIVE001 – Lorca and Gerry Read – Moments b/w Gerry Read’s Nostalgic Mix – 10″ Vinyl
We are proud to be dropping a first physical release here at Live Ones in the form of a hand numbered, hand stamped 10” vinyl. No digital and limited to 300 units. We’re not big into hype here but we are chuffed with the product… Lorca – Handling the production duties on the A side. He’s recently made the move from South West London down to Brighton and has been solidifying his name under his latest moniker (Lorca). This move has seen him play alongside the likes of James Blake, Joy Orbison, Ramadanman, XXXY to name but a few. Lorca’s sound is becoming more and more distinct, whether he’s built the track by the sea or on his London house boat you can be sure there will be a big bass wave to ride. Gerry Read – Taking care of the B side. Mr Read has also been gathering speed and stripes within the Bass scene, having just penned a contract with 2nd Drop Records. His physical releases are already getting spins from the likes of Giles Petterson on the BBC , MJ Cole, Untold plus more. He really has become a sound to be reckoned with. Read moved from the UK to a suburban post code in Australia and found little else to do except immerse himself in music. Wether he was making music or listening to old Jungle tapes his Australian sojourn has, in no small way helped to shape his sound and prepare him for his return to the UK. He’s now banging out sets alongside Deep Space Orchestra, Eliphino, Szare and the rest. A side /// Lorca /// Moments – A unique track that really tests the sound systems. It’s fuelled by the heavy bass and drums, layered with a hypnotic vocal which flows over the soundscape with ease. Suitable for all sorts of sets from House to Dubstep beats or Balearic . B side /// Gerry Read /// Nostalgic Mix – Read flips the vibe of the A side on its head. He creates a darker sparser production with this Garage inspired track, chopping up the vocal to form a nostalgic 2 steppy back drop. His reincarnation takes a different route but you still end up at the dance floor. Early morning business.

GREC015RV – Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – TEED Remix 12” – 12″ Vinyl
TEED’s sound swings between overt musicality and scarily on-point dance floor intuition, tearing up gigs around the globe with his live show of bizarre instruments, glitter cannons and of course… dancing dinosaurs. Beautiful blip and blop intro, touching vocals, and scathing drum beat break is the makeup of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur’s track, Household Goods. This is seriously good remix EP Featuring mixes from Justin Martin, Lone & 2 Bears. DJ support from Erol Alkan, Annie Mac & Tayo.

BSR002 – The Eerier Child – Heavenly Creatures EP – 12″ Vinyl
After the darkness of Rabid Dogs EP Black Sunday Recordings now brings you a new summer-ish release by Rotterdam based producer The Eerier Child. Heavenly Creatures EP starts off with the soothing downtempo track REC, exploring the depths of your subwoofer with a kick-ass kickdrum. The melancholic sounds of INTO THE SUN ‘VIP MIX’ are familiar to those who have been listening to the CD album ‘Frequencies of the Mind’. This album was released in May 2009 featuring various artists. Now the track has been re-mixed and re-mastered especially for this 12inch release. THUNDERBALL will lure you into deeper realms with a triggering wobble that’ll boil up your engine. The fourth track DEEP RED is drenched in gloominess, with laidback grooves and smooth synth lines. With DAY the adventure slowly becomes dim as you enjoy the sun setting down, entering the beginning of a new dark night.

New D&B Releases

APEXX002 – Taktix – It’s The Way (2010 Refix) / It’s The Way (Serum Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
After the massive impact of Harvest’s dance floor destroyer ‘Militant’ Apexx Recordings proudly returns with our second release and we have pulled out all the stops for this one. Dj Taktix’s needs no introduction and neither does ‘It’s The Way’ first come out in 1994 and the remix featuring Top Buzz’s Mad P vocal is a benchmark tune to say the least. Taktix returns after a large break from the scene and comes with a remix with afresh new angle, rather than your typical junglist approach he gives it a dark more twisted vibe, metallic beats, dirty amen and still keeping the vocal gives ‘It’s The Way’ a fresh new vibe. Serum remix on the other hand is exactly what you expect from this highly rated producer and he brings it right up to 2010 with all the attributes there from the original and this remix has caused a storm. Been on dubplate for a while now and still getting airplay on all major radio stations this has had massive support from the likes of Andy C, Bryan Gee, Dj Marky, Nicky Blackmarket, Crissy Criss, Bailey and that’s just a few……. SUBTITLESUK009 – Fracture & Mark System – Yeah, But… – 12″ Vinyl
Fracture & Mark System, clearly understanding the fundamental elements Drum with Bass music. Their debut release for Subtitles is utterly compulsive, creating a vibe that’s full of bruising technoid fear, whilst brilliantly funky. On the flip side Closed Circuit’s groove is laid back, while moody beats steadily increase the pressure. Produced to perfection with the emphasis on the funk and groove. PIPS015 – Arkist – Rendezvous / Fill My Coffee – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips are very proud to present 2 emotive slices of bass-led dancefloor funk from another hugely talented Bristol based producer – Arkist. His reputation has been building this year, with a gorgeous melodic edge to his futuristic beats, and a unique sense of space and rhythm. Having heard his sound develop over the last year it’s a real pleasure to present 2 tracks which have been on constant rotation round here, and out in the clubs we play in… ’Rendezvous’ clashes classic 2-step garage vibes with amazing melancholy synth work to create a future bass steppa that gets an amazing response every time it is dropped… ’Fill your Coffee’ comes with a lo-slung funked out twist, culminating in a rushy pad breakdown that just sounds incredible on a big system believe me! With gigs at Fabric & two American tours under his belt, & a killer 12” with Kidkut coming on Hotflush, Arkist is poised for great things in 2011. Tracks already getting support from DJs as diverse as Ben UFO (Hessle), Boddika (Swamp 81), Alexander Nut (Eglo), Mr Scruff, & many more.

OUTNL001 – Kastil – Dusty Edits – 12″ Vinyl
File under Disco Edits. As an extension of their Dutch electronic music website Outernational.nl, we present you the newly born imprint Outernational Recordings. The kick off for this unique vinyl series is by Basque County native Kastil who sets the right tone with three wonderful Disco edits at a mid-tempo / slomo pace. Since uploading these tracks to his SoundCloud page, the feedback has been enormous. Side A contains the long, slow and loopy ‘Back to Philadelphia’, where Kastil cleverly plays with the vocals and delay and creates a highly tense build up. There’s no doubt that some large players in the very popular Disco edit culture will play this one out. On the B1 side you find the track ‘SMD’. A track which received great feedback by some key figures on SoundCloud. This track is the ultimate pre-lude for the summer. Fortunately, this is being released just early enough to enjoy this during the European and Northern American summer. With again beautiful vocals floating through the track, this track definitely reminds one of a hot day in the local park. The B2 track is called ‘Rolls Royce’. Perfect as the last track of this release since it’s a long edit which ends with a very atmospheric piano solo that keeps on floating through the last few minutes of the track. All and all, these edits will definitely make some heads turn after the date of release. Supported by: Cosmic Boogie, Dicky Trisco, The Legendary 1979 Orchestra, Sleazy Beats Recordings, Ben La Desh, 78 Edits, Osvaldo Wilson, Mannmademusic, Gitchell Moore

PSQ006 – AnD – Algorythmic Love EP – 12″ Vinyl
AnD are a duo living in Manchester, UK. They’ve released a split 12” with 16 Bit on Mindset in 2009, the second 12” on Black Sun Records that came out recently and a couple of 12“s on Horizontal Ground. They sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in Techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. I selected three of those tracks to appear on this EP, ranging between 130 and 135 BPM. “Algorythmic Love” is probably the most dancefloor orientated of the three. A percussive monster with a huge kick drum, but that doesn’t work around the 4/4 template. The lush chords that creep in towards the end of the tune bring out a depth that’s alluded to but never revealed fully in the first half. “Brother From Another Mother” feels a lot slower but is around the same speed. The drums are staccato and restrained with perfect placement of hits around some ethereal delay heavy melody and huge bass. “Swing Me” refocuses on the dancefloor but rather than using prominent drums to that end it employs twisting synth melodies to generate pace and energy. Tom Dicicco is a Techno producer also based in Manchester. When AnD told me that they knew him and that he’d be up for doing a remix I jumped at the chance; Tom’s first 12” on Baud and his track on Jonas Kopp’s “Music From The Basement” compilation blew me away. His “Late Night Dub” of “Brother From Another Mother” turns the tune into a 124 BPM Techno track, powered by some very prominent Hi Hat work and laced with beautiful delay riddled melody. To me it sounds like a fusion of Dub Techno and House, complimenting the original tracks on the EP perfectly. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London.

CIV024 – Drums of Death – Black Waves EP – 12″ Vinyl
Black Waves is 4 tracks of deep, dark club music. Since the release of his critically acclaimed album “Generation Hexed”, Drums of Death has been obsessively developing a deeper and darker sound that is tailored for the dance-floor. Black Waves fuses frantic 808 drum patterns and dramatic synth lines with fresh, contemplative melodies. It’s music born out of its maker’s passion for techno and house. Black Waves opens with “Cold Lazarus” an intense 4 minute ride of classic techno taken to its intenseconclusion. Strings derived from his raucous live show build tension before the track spirals out ofcontrol descending into a frenzied, audio assault. Further high-end club tendencies are delivered on “I Can’t Take It”. Drenched with early 90’s rave influence, it’s house music looking forward at 135 beats per minute. Urgent soul vocals, torn apart and carried along by rattling snares. ”Lost Highway” is melodic with a deep London sound. It’s emotive synths mix with rolling toms and pitched vocal shards. Still designed for the club it shows a more considered side to the Drums of Death sound. A subtlety that is also present in the romantic, emotional flourishes of closing track “Love’s Labour’s Lost”. Here arpeggiated synths build while chords and strings mix with clarinets and heavysubs to make an almost baroque 2-step hybrid. Drums Of Death is the alter-ego of Colin Bailey and as his renowned and energetic live performances go from strength to strength and take him round the world he has continually exceeded all expectations.Drums of Death emerged from London’s club scene in early 2008 and signed to Joe Goddard from Hot Chip’s record label and party crew, Greco-Roman. He released a series of sold out 12″s that preceded his universally applauded debut album “Generation Hexed”. Tours with Peaches & Hot Chip, remixes for Drop The Lime, Tricky, Kele, Franz Ferdinand, Fenech-Soler, Steve Mason, Hot Chip and more. Co-writingthe title track of Peaches’ album “I Feel Cream”. Regularly delivering diverse mixes for RA, Clash, XLRecordings and for radio shows around the world. Curating stages at one festival and headlining the next, sessions for BBC Introducing, being nominated DJ Mag’s “Breakthrough producer of the year”, twice featuring in Dazed & Confused’s “Greatest Electronic Songs of the Decade” and gracing the cover of IDJ. That has been the Drums of Death story so far……………………. but voodoo, hype and face paint aside, Black Waves showcases a producer moving forward. For Drums of Death it’s the beginning of something new.

PFND002 – Rob Sparx – Walk On / Walk On (PropaTingz Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Profound Audio follows up their debut release with this absolutely smashing single from heavyweights, Rob Sparx and PropaTingz. Covering both ends of the spectrum from the original to its epic remix, ‘Walk On’ has been making waves across the globe and is finally available to the masses. Guaranteed to mash up the dance, this is a must-have record for 2011! A. Rob Sparx – Walk On – Rob Sparx’s original mix kicks off with a funky 2-Step riddim, layered with soulful guitar licks, penetrating synths and some extra deep bass to get you moving. The tune progresses into a super-funky, filtered disco beat leading into a high-energy buildup that will have any crowd going nuts. The drop combines beautiful haunting vocals, brain-rattling bass and sexy synth stabs in a ‘purple’ fashion that has already made an impact on dancefloors worldwide. Not to be taken lightly, this one’s a heavy-hitter and still maintains its class! AA. Rob Sparx – Walk On (PropaTingz Remix) – Doing what he does best, badman PropaTingz comes extra hard with this slamming remix, completely flipping the original tune into a crushing dancefloor anthem. The remix starts with an eerie atmospheric intro of arpeggiating strings, lush pads and a glitched-out take on the original vocal, wasting no time in taking you to the build-up. The drop is absolutely insane, hitting you in the face with a switch-up of extra fat half-time and double-time drums and a west coast G-funk lead all sitting under PropaTingz’s disgusting signature basslines. A prime-time dancefloor smasher – handle with caution!

2NDRP12013 – DjRum – ‘Mountains EP’ Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
A main player behind the seminal Yardcore nights in London and with previous releases with On the Edge and Smokin Sessions, DjRUM has always existed on the alternative edge of a number of scenes, but after producing a stunning remix of LV and Message To Bears ft Zaki Ibrahim “Explode” for 2nd Drop’s last release, his talent is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Now 2nd Drop are proud to present a full EP of original material. The DjRum EP will be released in two parts. EP Part 1: Undercoat leads the first part in typical DjRUM style; multiple layers of gravelly, heavily charged atmosphere, ever shifting beat patterns, murky pockets of drums and percussion and his trademark use of epic strings. This moody cut builds and builds throughout and before you know it the beats have jumped from half step into sultry techno. Mountains pt 1 on the flip picks up from where Undercoat left off, dropping straight into pulsing techno drums that gallop away and build into sheets of shifting emotive synths, accompanied with haunting vocals snippets. Packed with detail and nuance, this track keep on giving with every listen. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record. Check more of his work at www.matttaylor.co.uk

DUFFDISCO006 – Duff Disco – Grand Master Duff / Slow – 12″ Vinyl
Blue skies and late nights, camp fires and cheap delights and whisky drained straight from the jar. In a hammock slung below a sky of dreams and sea of stars lay a pop princess and a hip hop pioneer, arms entwined and eyes locked into each other’s stare they whisper sweet –nothings to each other, “You’re flash” he says “take it slow” she purrs back “and don’t even don’t think about going down under!” A mile or two out to sea, floats what has come to be known as a mega-yacht. Aboard his life like an episode of MTV Cribs but with more parties and less gold-encrusted pool tables. Surrounded by beauties by the bevy and sipping on gin and juice, Duff scans the horizon with his telescope (solid platinum, encrusted with diamonds, built in infa red) and spies young love or a new hope. Smiling to himself he thinks “they look different, younger perhaps at least changed, if not for the better but changed at least which is surely a good thing”. He turns to the girls on the boat, one hand pointing to the shore and the other raising his drink to the sky he shouts “I helped create that”

3024015 – Instra:mental / Trevino – Pyramid / Chip – 12″ Vinyl
Fresh from the pleasures of introducing Jon Convex to the world, 3024 heads off on a pair of tangents for the next project. The 14th release marks the label’s first split 12″ – a result of 2 tracks falling in to their collective lap that were too good to wait for individual releases. Despite the 2 very different acts involved, the symmetry in both musical background and production methodology makes for a record as coherent as any in the label’s back catalogue, with both artists closely linked to both 3024 and Martyn’s career. Filling up the first side is the ever-evolving four-legged analogue Hoover that is Instra:mental, with a raucous victory lap following on from their widely acclaimed ‘Revolution 653’ album, and the two members’ warmly received solo endeavors as Boddika (aka Alex Green) and Jon Convex (aka Damon Kirkham). Less an example of the icy metallic Instra:mental sound showcased on their debut long player and more a collaboration between the combined talents of their respective monikers, ‘Pyramid’ takes the Decepticon strut of Green’s solo work and grafts it seamlessly to the EBM aesthetic of the initial wave of ‘Convexations,’ to form an undulating monster of sub-low Atari evoking murk and swing. The flip-side is home to the debut work of the new alias from a DJ/producer who’s integral to 3024′s formation, an artist as at home on the golf course as he has been at raves throughout the last few decades. In contrast to the deliberate pulse of ‘Pyramid’, the man no one knows as Trevino introduces himself to the wider world with ‘Chip.’ An urgently paced update of the cybernetic warehouse sound beloved of Northern England at the turn of the 90′s, ‘Chip’ is instantly evocative of the finest early Warp releases in both its floor friendliness and cunning melodic turns. The increasingly talked about Erosie takes time out from some soon-to-be-revealed new projects, and graces 3024-015 with another sleeve in his resiliently inimitable style.

2NDRP12014 – DjRum – ‘Mountains EP’ Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
The second and third parts of the Mountains suite nestle snugly together on pt 2 of the EP. Dissolving from the lush techno of Mountains pt 1, Rum lightens the pressure accenting the melodic motifs of pt 1 adding an almost lilting, percussively funky rhythm, only to be broken with a galloping gabba style beat washed over by his trademark string and synth blanket. However, the pressure is short lived, as once again the track gives way to a verdant and lush pasture of classic Rum ambience. Turiya on the flip pays subtle homage to Alice Coltrane by using her later adopted spiritual name. And you can hear her ethereal jazz and harp qualities evoked through his use of melody, before dropping into a broken 2-step bump with a nicely chopped up vocal. This track really brings out Rum’s penchant for amazing strings once again as he drifts them in gently towards the later half of the track, creating further layers of lush melodic bliss. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record. RED007 – ΔΔ – Sportex – 12″ Vinyl
Red007 sees Pushing Red taking a slightly different turn with more of a ‘juke’ style release. (Greek – known as Dimitri) buckles down with a with what could be called as a fusion of juke, ghetto house & footwork to outstanding results. The sharp 808 kicks and bassline pulsate throughout the tune while a sharp vocal sample cuts through giving the tune that much more punch! Flip over for the wonderful Ikonika remix. Ikonika has really taken this tune and given it her own feel and appeal. Turning the stormer into more of a halftime/ house feel, it’s hard to put to words the outcome. It’s ferocious & melodic and all wrapped up with that signature Ikonika feel! One you just have to hear!

2562 – Fever Addendum 12″ [When In Doubt]

Posted 19 August 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 1 Comment

Arguably the most popular track on 2562’s stunning ‘Fever’ album, ‘Aquatic Family Affair’, was only available on its cd version and a highly limited 10″ lp sampler. Due to overwhelming demand for the track on wax here it is again in full glory, extended and re-cut.

Half reissue, half remix 12”, the flip has the mighty Head High aka Shed giving his favourite albumtrack ‘Wasteland’ the Powerhouse™ remix treatment, slow-building and boombastic as only he can. Killer.

Feedback on the Fever album:

Huismans rewrites history… by limiting his initial sound set so dramatically he has given himself the impetus to create an audacious and sweeping vision of dance music’s possibilities.
The Wire

The sheer exuberance of the [disco-sampled] source material shines through in the brilliant chrome surfaces and endlessly inventive arrangements of 2562′s fantastic third album.
Little White Earbuds

An innovative trek through retrospection, and a concept pulled off with dexterity.
Resident Advisor

What is truly remarkable about Fever is its coherence; its unique sonic stamp – every piece sounds like it belongs here and simply couldn’t exist anywhere else … as 2562′s third album, it represents the pinnacle thus far of a staggering career arc – a magnificent achievement in itself.
FACT Magazine

Not only the most complete 2562 LP yet, but also one of the most absorbing bass-orientated albums of recent time.
Mixmag

New D&B Releases

REVREC023 – Nocturnal & Hybris – Pyramids – 12″ Vinyl
Next stop for Revolution features another new recruit to our ever growing army, Hybris. After his huge EP for Noisia’s label Vision and releases on Critical and Blackout, this producer is rapidly rising up the dnb ranks. “Pyramids” sees Hybris teaming up with Revolution stalwart Nocturnal to deliver a moody classic brimming with bubbling basslines and razor sharp beats. Some serious technological wizadry going on here! “Lair” takes a crisp electro-tinged beat and a perpetuating bassline and merges them together to create a deep roller with plenty of atmosphere. Definitely one to get those dancefloors rumbling!

New D&B Promos

DIS048 – Survival & Silent Witness / Survival – Anty / Ever Clear – 12″ Vinyl
On the A side of ‘Dispatch 48′ we have 2 producers who need no introduction with a track that seems to set the screwface look going on any dancefloor it drops in on. This is clearly another studio pairing that really hits it off in the at the controls and needless to say on top of this track we present you right here there will be more superb music forthcoming from these 2 on the label in the future – this we promise. Please play extremely loud. Expertly mastered at ‘Exhale Audio’ LTD. The flip sees Survival go solo with a track that really sounds unique and to be pretty honest we’re finding it hard to describe, however its definitely containing his signature bass and synth sounds put to great effect. Put simply its a stepping number with a sub bass on the drop that is more than lethal to say the least. Support in the clubs and on radio from the likes of: Ant TC1, Break, Cern, Nymfo, Calyx, Anile, Chris SU, Octane & DLR, Sabre, Amoss, Siren, Vicious Circle, Dabs, BluMarTen, Subterra & Xtrah.

MODULE008 – D Minds – Subcrate / Stone River – 10″ Vinyl
Moving up and moving on is the ever on point Modulations imprint, part of the formidable Critical Music empire. This time Kasra hauls in a duo familiar to most, a duo who’ve been a staple part of the D&B world for the best part of the last decade; step forward Bristol’s D*Minds. ‘Sub Crate’ intros delicately with dark pads and a stripped back break that prep us for the badman steppa that’s about to take flight. Drop dread bass is it what it’s all about as D*Minds take us back in time to the early Full Cycle days with heavy kicks, reverse FX and a punching b-line that doesn’t give up. Dangerous without a doubt! Drawing yet again from their heavy west country influence ‘Stone River’ flows nervously through a windswept cityscape with syncopated breaks, slow-rise bass and percussion fills that keep things moving in an otherwise fairly minimal slice of D*Minds artillery. Great to hear Critical bringing out something a little different from these guys.

RECIPE022 – Sato – Glide / Detroit Lies Bleeding (Phobia Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
After the success of the Recipe Book album, Ingredients return to their next 12” single from long stalwart Sato. “Glide” is reminiscent of late 90’s Matrix, with it’s bulging bass line and 2 step drums. Flip for a remix of Sato’s biggest tune so far “detroit lies bleeding” by Phobia. Taking the original and flipping it on it’s head, this monstrous roller has been cained for months by Andy C and will feature in many sets upon it’s release. Perfect dj friendly material and a return to business for Ingredients. SPY “Excellent 5/5” Total Science “Big” Nu:Tone “Full Support”

full colour sleeve, 180g pressing. Clouds are a Finnish electronic music production team that consists of Tommi Liikka and Samuli Tanner. Tommi is a Helsinki native and Samuli comes from a small village deep in rural Finland. The pair met through mutual friends in 1999, and ever since planned on producing music together, hindered by both working on various projects and shows of their own. The plan was finally realised after a string of coincidences and happy accidents led them to sharing a house in the northern suburbs of Helsinki. CBR001 – Om Unit vs Kromestar – Solar Cycle / Merkabah – 12″ Vinyl
Cosmic Bridge is the new label of Om Unit, the London based DJ & Producer. Striding into 2011, Cosmic Bridge declares it’s debut with a killer release in the form of an Om Unit & Kromestar collaboration. Om Unit says of the label: “I took this collaboration as a green light to start my own imprint for side projects to my own stuff. The name speaks for itself, just have a listen, we hope you enjoy” The collaboration came about when Om Unit heard new Kromestar material being played on Rinse fm by DJ Jay 5ive, dubs were exchanged with mutual support. What started out as a casual exchange has culminated into something far more profound. Eager ears could do worse than to watch Cosmic Bridge closely this year. Lorn – “Either this came from space traveling dons from universe 9, or some ancient utopia… either way I love it.” Joker – “Sick, i can hear both producers in this” Kutmah – ‘’Sounds fucking AMAZING” Pinch – “these tunes with kromestar are very very good” Machine Drum – “West coast meets UK in the most perfect way. Compton in 2030’’

KAP007 – Benga – Faithless / Acid Lie – 12″ Vinyl
Kapsize is very proud to present our next release from none other than international dubstep superstar – BENGA! A man who should need little introduction – Benga has been famously instrumental in shepherding dubstep music from its inception almost 10 years ago, right through to the global phenomenon it has become now. Having stormed the charts and festivals recently as one third of the mighty Magnetic Man, Benga is still able to walk a delicate tightrope – consistently providing us with credible underground dancefloor music with an accessible edge. The two cuts Benga lets loose here on Kapsize, ‘Faithless’ and ‘Acid Lie’, exemplify this finely tuned understanding of how to work a dancefloor into a frenzy without losing one’s cool. So onto the music… ‘Faithless’ has been a staple of Joker’s sets for several months now – a solid power anthem of a tune. Building up initially with a 4/4 kick pattern and fast chopping cyber samples, ‘Faithless’ soon introduces a Prodigy-esque riff – something that sonically sits between a distorted guitar sample and futuristic synth sound – before laying down the sub-heavypressure of the full drop. A massive club tune by even Benga’s own standards! Flip then for the equally excellent ‘Acid Lie’ which leads with a looping, low-slung and sleezy live bass line – think something from the soundtrack to Kill Bill or Snatch, warning the imminent presence of some bad dudes! Rising textures bring in the leading acid riff line which continues to morph dynamically over the thundering sub bass. A retro rave reference with a very futuristic twist – one for the heads and the ravers alike!

NONPLUS015 – Jon Convex – Radar – 12″ Vinyl
Next up on the label is this brilliant two-tracker from Instra:mental’s Jon Convex. Serving as a taster of his forthcoming debut solo album it’s a hugely impressive 12″ with both sides demanding your attention. There’s a nice old skool eerie, electro feel throughout and the tracks manage that nifty trick of sounding like something from the past and the future at the same time.

NL010 – Boddika / Instra:mental – Grand Prix / Vicodin (Skudge Warehouse Mix) – 12″ Vinyl
Limited Coloured Vinyl pressing. One of my big favourite Instra tunes is Vicodin (released with Let’s Talk – a dark, foreboding dubstep classic) and it gets a makeover by Skudge who are getting mentions everywhere right now. Check this track; even the waveform looks f***in’ dark! Skudge warp it into something between dubstep and house but with all the downer-rhythm that really makes this track. Along with the remix there’s more from Boddika in Grand Prix. Short and sweet little hypnotic bounce track with serious dancability. Kind words from: http://blogandbass.wordpress.com

GREC020V – Enchante – North End EP – 12″ Vinyl
Greco-Roman welcomes a new artist to its camp: following some first appearances at the collective’s local events, London-based producer Enchante will soon release his debut EP North End there, while playing the next Berlin label night this Saturday with Azari & III (DJ set) and others at Picknick. And the new material perfectly fits into the usual Greco-diversity: opening track “Ego” offers deep UK garage, while “Reggay” (despite its name) comes in as the finest skweee-2step we have heard in a long while.

FRJ010 – Cardopusher / Desto / Geiom / Submerse – Frijsfo Beats Volume 3 – 12″ Vinyl
Frijsfo Beats come with the biggest drop yet in their series of vinyl EPs compiling work from various artists. As usual it’s evidently curated with a distinctive ear, tuned to wilder mutations of garage and dubstep. Volume 3 sees Geiom return, by now a label stalwart, but is largely about new blood, delivering a hefty load of talent to the roster all at once in Cardopusher, Desto and Submerse. Cardopusher will shock anyone who thinks they have him pinned down as a purveyor of jump-up tracks, albeit high quality ones. “Then What” pulls the covers from the Venezuelan’s real talent, for rugged techno soul and the kind of weighty but improbably elastic rhythm section that marks out a cannier producer. Though sharper heads will have clocked his recent album for Tigerbeat6, for sheer rewind and replay value his contribution here stands out memorably. Desto isn’t the only Finnish producer to get ahead in the hype game recently, but he stakes out his territory in muscular fashion. His remix of Kuoyah’s “Convex Gravity” (released digitally last year on Frijsfo) follows two excellent twelves for Ramp Recordings. Unexpectedly but grippingly, his inner bruiser gets the cue to come out chopping and screwing: pitching juke-like drums and vocal buckshot at will and scalding the lot with something like the extra corrosive byproduct of an acid line. Geiom won’t necessarily surprise fans of the rangy capabilities represented on his own Berkane Sol imprint and his Frijsfo EPs, Tone Generation being the latest to hit shelves earlier this month. He should delight plenty however, as he jams a grinding 2step beat with slippery tones and stroboscopic gating, the kind of computer madness Underground Resistance might transmit as a distress call from the nth dimension. Last but not at all least Submerse steps out for the label, arguably in overdue fashion. The hugely popular producer has inspired the diverse likes of Well Rounded, Fortified Audio, Mad Decent and Ministry of Sound all to jump on the wagon in some capacity so far. There’s a strong case that “Bubblin’” is his best tune yet, shying away from more blatant moves in favour of a gossamer touch. Low end dynamics are fully present, but beyond the subs it’s all headroom, giving the merest after-impression of a summer garage anthem space to blossom.

a1 Cardopusher – Then What
a2 Kuoyah’s – Convex Gravity (Desto Remix)
b1 Geiom – Chip Voices
b2 Submerse – Bubblin’

DETAIL007 – Lynx, Malibu & Hellrazor / Lynx & Hellrazor – Sleazy / Taboo – 12″ Vinyl
Detail 007 sees Lynx joined by fellow studio partner Hellrazor and co writer of the classic Mariachi track Malibu. Sleazy, the A side is a pure filthy dirty dnb porn track, with sliding greased up basses, nasty crunched up beat and porn vocals for good measure! Taboo is on a moody tribal vibe, akin to Lynx’s previous hit Shaku. Weird tribal vocals and percussion scatter the track and build up to the crescendo of the second drop which sounds huge in a club! As supported by Hype, Shy FX, Marcus Intalex, Marky, John B, Lenzman and Scrillex!!

Limited Pink Vinyl!. Kokeshi changes the tempo this time offering two tunes from Russia’s Bulb. ‘Tenderness’ comes with an 80s Vangelis vibe that offers the emotional aesthetic that Kokeshi is known for. With its non 2 step beats it won’t be recognisable as drum’n'bass despite having the same tempo as most d’n'b tunes. For the DJ’s, catch the flip side which offers a dance-floor friendly yet uber deep feel from the d’n'b tune ‘Heartless’.

SYMM007 – Break & Die / Need For Mirrors – Slow Down VIP / Skip Rope – 12″ Vinyl
Break & Die’s ‘Slow Down’ is undoubtedly one of the most played and best loved drum & bass tunes of the past 12 months, and following on from the enormous success that was Break’s 2nd album ‘Resistance’. Symmetry Recordings returns with a special VIP mix of the track, backed with a debut on the label for Need For Mirrors. The long anticipated ‘Slow Down’ VIP has everything we loved about the original with a whole lot more. With its unbeatable intro, breaking into the familiar deep and dark roller, there is something about this tune that others are yet to touch upon. The vocals guide the way accompanied by a heavier take on the drums that provides a new and exciting alternative. On the flip is ‘Skip Rope’ by Need For Mirrors (Mosus & HLZ), taking depth of bass to a new level. The clean-cut bassline keeps the energy high and fast paced, while the simple yet effective use of drums makes the feet bounce. Creating anticipation with dark and atmospheric interludes with tech-tribal fx create an almost mystic mood – this is Drum & Bass wizardry at its best. The high expectations for the return of Break’s Symmetry label have unquestionably been met. Watch out for release number 8 coming soon…

New D&B Promos

SECOPS017 – Andy Skopes & Mr Joseph – Call To Arms / Trash Talk – 12″ Vinyl
Solid white Vinyl. I’m honoured to announce the first UK based act is releasing on Secret operations. The duo has been working on music for some time now, but it wasn’t until recently it caught my attention. Mr Joseph is running his night “Fizzy” in London, and had some recent releases out making his name recognised in the drum & bass scene. A. Call To Arms Call to arms is a heavy breaks based track, with nice ethereal strings. The track starts with a nice string intro and female vocal samples, and then explodes in a shuffled breakbeat, reese-bass inferno. AA. Trash Talk This track is a bit different for secret operations, but it has a feel that i think is suitable for the label. The track starts with a static beat and a nice chord, then it switches to growling bassline and subtle but effective percussion.

NOPPALP001 – Tes La Rok – Them LP – 12″ Vinyl x 3
Tes La Rok’s highly anticipated debut album entitled ‘Them’ will finally see the light of day. Tes La Rok made his name in dubstep circles in 2007 with the massive “Round The World Girls Remix” which immediately positioned him as one of the most exciting artists and definitely one to watch. Anthem releases such as ‘Under The Dancing Feet’ remix for Clouds, ‘Wikidness Remix’ for Mungo’s Hi-Fi, and ‘Up In The Vip / Living Fire’ on Dub Police were soon followed by bookings at DMZ in Brixton and dubstep mecca FWD>> at Plastic People. ‘Them’ features thirteen tracks engineered with precision and care. ‘Invasion’ sets the album off in a deep and minimal flavour followed by the dark and abyssal ‘Earth’. The album title track ‘Them’ mixes techno flavours with tribal percussions and futuristic basslines. ‘Murda’ takes the sound back to the year 2006 which is the year when it was originally composed and luckily recovered from a destroyed hard drive! ‘Virus’ is a dark mutated sci-fi roller followed by ‘You & I’, the track that has been causing waves all over the world. Tes gives a taste of his old junglist roots on 140bpm amen roller ‘Secrets’ and as a follow-up tests his hands on hip hop vibes in ‘Malfunction’. ‘Tribal Ting’ and ‘Spiritual Ting’ showcase the more known Tes La Rok dubwise production and his profound love to dig dub stepper sounds. ‘What’ and ‘From The Shadows’ combine deep & beautiful atmospheres with post-garage drums patterns and subheavy basslines. To bring the album to a finale and give a hint of the future, ‘Turn It Up’ brings in chopped vocals and raw 808 bass. Coming from the land of three months of nearly zero sunlight it is by no means a surprise that this album is deep, dark and futuristic. From the music to the artwork there’s a touch of Bladerunner and Alien. These tracks are being championed by the main players such as Distance, N-Type, Kryptic, Minds, Desto, Pinch, Addison Groove and Cyrus.

BRK020 – Erra – Stax / Jookup – 12″ Vinyl
Berkane Sol present the vinyl debut of Erra. Erra comes bursting through your speakers with a riot of tuff drums and sweet melody – its like the sound of someone who’s rinsed their console so much that its gone way beyond high scores and into a full on system meltdown. ‘Stax’ starts out with a dreamy intro which leads into the rudest of wake up calls – a proper peak-time jackin’ synth stab married to a smartly evolved bassline, all driven by concussive garage flavoured rhythms. ‘Jookup’ on the flip again demonstrates Erra’s irresistible talent for blending blissful keys with hectic dancefloor moments, this time really bringing the sickly grime synths to the front, with some cute but disembodied vocals punctuating the action. The 12” follows up Erra’s popular L2S digital release ‘Cake Music’, and neatly shows off this young producers rapid development. These tracks have been getting love from people such as: Rod Azlan (Dub Police), Autechre, Al Tourettes (Applepips), Mary Anne Hobbs, Brackles (Rinse FM), N Type (Wheel and Deal), DJ Flight (1 Xtra), Spamchop (Wigflex), 2562 (Tectonic), Shortstuff (Ramp), Cardopusher (Hyperdub), Martyn (3024), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Elgato (Hessle Audio), Selector dub U (Hotflush), Skipple (Sub FM), West Norwood Cassette Library (Teal), King Thing (Fortified)

SLUDGE015 – Trick Or Treat – Bad Bwoy Tune – 12″ Vinyl
So, your bowels have just about started functioning properly and the world has finally stopped vibrating after the last bass onslaught from the Sludge camp. It’s going to require gonads of steel to whack up the volume on this latest beast, but we know you never lost your hardcore. Nevertheless, as we’re a caring bunch at Sludge HQ, we feel obliged to warn in advance that this latest slab of dubstep pressure from Trick or Treat is the sort of big tuna that might leave some needing a job lot of nappies and a year off work to recover. Bad Bwoy Toon does exactly what it says on the tin. Kicking off with old skool style rave stabs and some familiar sampling action, you might be forgiven for thinking that you’ve take the rave DeLorean for a spin and wound up back in ’89. That is, until the drop when the searing bassline kicks in and catapults you back to the future with a sub that has the potential to cause chest implosions from a mile away. Trust us when we tell you that this firing track is going to be turning dance floors into casualty wards across the land throughout the summer. Heavy! Over on the flip of this monster package is Hype Funk. The instantly recognisable intro will prick up your ears and pull you in before skippy beats, chopped up samples and earth shattering bass finish you off. It’s the kind of banger that might have even the residents of the local cemetery raving in their coffins. An essential floorfiller this, and a tune that will almost certainly get you laid each and every time you decide to unleash it on the masses.
