New D&B Releases

HE001 – Makoto – Tower Of Love Ft. Paul Randolph – 12″ Vinyl
Tower of Love is a fitting A Side for the single from Makoto’s 3rd studio album “Souled Out”. Take a moment to think back to the golden years of the legendary Motown Records. With their soulful vibes, electric keys and beats that you can’t help but boogie to, this label defined a generation and changed the landscape of music forever. Tower of Love is Makoto’s wonderful take on this sound. Featuring the sublime vocals of Paul Randolph, who has worked with world famous artists such as Jazzanova, Zed Bias & Carl Craig’s Innerzone Orchestra, as well as live sounding dance hall style beats and super funky guitars Tower of Love is most definitely one of the freshest drum and bass tunes written this decade.Keep Me Down feat. Angela Johnson is Makoto’s trademark dancefloor vibe compliments Angela Johnson’s classic soulful vocals on this tune perfectly. An empowering song of triumph over adversity – Keep Me Down’s huge amen break, driving pads, beepy arpeggios and massive bass are guaranteed to get the dance floor moving. This is a huge tune with a killer vibe from Makoto once again.

DISF015 – dBridge – City Of Lonely Runaways / Dischord – 12″ Vinyl
dBridge is far from being a new name on anyoneʼs lips, having released music on countless labels and his own Exit Records over the last 16 years heʼs built a name for himself as being a true innovator within the electronic music scene, being versatile and unpredictable he never fails to disappoint. Here we have two analogue masterpieces that show how diverse a tempo can be. Exploring his beloved 170bpm he takes us through two emotional tracks of complex chord sequences and lush string arrangements tinted with his trademark melancholic signature. This is a buy on site release for his current fan base that have been patiently waiting, but also an ear opener for music lovers worldwide that have turned off to the formulaic and predictable mutation of D&B that has been dominating press and airwaves.

SOM015 – State Of Mind / State Of Mind & Black Sun Empire – Ronald Reagan / Pitch Dryfter – 12″ Vinyl
State of Mind have done it again with this killer slice of wax. The cheekily entitled A side ‘Ronal Reagan’ is all about the bass. Its big, its round, its like J Lo’s butt after a bucket of chicken. Tight clean beats offset the bass and make this track a real standout. Pitch Dryfter sees BSE & SOM team up once again. This ones a shot of dark side progressive action, perfect for fans of previous collabs like ‘Animal’ or ‘Red Velvet’. This is one for the crates…

Canadian producer ‘Nautiluss’ aka Graham Douglas Bertie of Thunderheist (of underground dance hit ‘Jerk It’ on Big Dada) and UK singer/songwriter Simon Lord (Simian/Black Ghosts) under his Lord Skywave alter ego, joined forces after meeting on a high-spirited liquor-sodden North American tour. Lauded by their peers Mistajam, Giles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs, and Sinden, their hyped sound, exploring fresh sonic territory has already had national airplay. Their first collaboration ‘Ultraviolet’ is a finely tuned piece of dark, tense and spectral noise – classic, cavernous after-hours club music, backed with the instrumental ‘Bleu Monday’.

BFR005 – Kutz & Walsh – The Kutz & Walsh EP – 12″ Vinyl
Biscuit Factory Records returns with its fifth release. A three track EP from Walsh & Kutz which has already caused a stir amongst the scenes most dedicated followers and which encapsulates the full spectrum of the Dubstep sound as it is today. On the A side, Walsh has teamed up with Kutz to produce a massive club anthem, Wanted. With its raw industrial bass lines, moving sirens and constantly evolving mid range drones, it’s not hard to see why this track has had support from some of the scenes biggest players. On the flip side, Kutz shows his diversity, with two completely different sounding tracks. G742 is all together a techy and electro sounding track. Along with 4×4 rolling drums and colourful stabbing snares, a heavily distorted, bit crushed synth gives the track a unique sounding swing. The Warning is a much darker affair synonymous with the original dubstep sound. Incorporating a pulsating sub at the heart of the track, a futuristic synth line rides heavy hitting kicks and a whip cracking snare to truly give a glimpse of the future. DJ support from Skream, Benga and Mistajam (BBC Radio One). NType and Chef (Wheel and Deal/ Sub Freq, Rinse FM), Hatcha (Sin City, KISSFM), Subscape (Dub Police), Walsh (Biscuit Factory, Hotflush) and Kutz (W&D, Soul Jazz, Digital Soundboy).

BOKA036 – Crushington & Optimus Gryme – Hangman / Voodoo Skank – 12″ Vinyl
Purveyors of maximal minimalism in bass music, Crushington explore the mid-tempo soundworld of dubstep. Inspired to step outside of their box by a face-melting New Years Eve performance from Skream and Benga, for the last two years, Crushington have sonically sculpted their own, well-received take on dubstep. Lacking a developed knowledge of the genre, their unaffected explorations into different tempos and grooves have caught ears everywhere, leading to DJ support from N-Type, Jakes, Emalkay, Distance, Seven, Truth, Bulletproof, Datsick, Excision, Hatcha and Headhunter.Along the way, they’ve collaborated with, or remixed for Black Sun Empire, SPL, Truth, Optimus Gryme and Bulletproof. With high profile support and collaborations boiling over left right and centre and several boutique vinyl releases to their credit, DJ bookings across New Zealand and Australia have come quickly and to lauded receptions.Old school producers and DJs from the era of vinyl and “by ear” engineering, their sonic fidelity has seen their Crushington tunes described by the likes of Antiserum as the perfect studio mixdown reference. To put it in simpler terms, Crushington’s subwoofer rupturing arrangements are fast becoming a standard setter with in the international dubstep community, where things go next from here though; only time will tell.

IDLE008 – AnD – Hydrothermal / Lights Down – 12″ Vinyl
Manchester duo A.n.D. are at the heart of Manchester’s thriving electronic music community. Here they present two weighty cuts for Bristol’s Idle Hands label. ‘Hydrothermal’ is a stripped back 4/4 excursion with rattling hi-hats and lots of bass. ‘Lights Down Low’ rolls along on a syncopated techno beat, with deadly snares and a droning, almost industrial feel bringing to mind the work of Regis and T++.

DRUNK025 – Kahn – Illy / Tehran – 12″ Vinyl
Kahn blazed his way in to the consciousness of the UK underground back in February this year with his debut release for Punch Drunk. His new 12” marks a return to the label, fully asserting his position at the forefront of Bristol’s new generation of producers. Lead track Illy lures you with it’s colourful immediacy, before torpedoing you headfirst in to a torrent of tumultuous bass and psychedelic riffing. Flipside, Tehran takes you a straight back to the old school of heavyweight subsonic steppers. Immersive. Stripped. Deadly. Powerful ammunition direct to the front of your record crate.

HB00G01 – Various – Welcome To The Horrordome! – 12″ Vinyl
Kanji Kinetic’s future bass sounds have been causing shockwaves at parties worldwide. Mixing up beats from bassline & 4×4, dubstep and oldskool breakbeat hardcore like no-one else can, he has found support from heavyweights such as Mary Anne Hobbs and Tayo in the UK, and Drop The Lime and Starkey in the US. With a number of well-received releases on respected labels, his production skills are in high demand with a slew of high-profile remixes about to emerge, as well as brand new original material to destroy the party unlike anything before. For Horror Boogie, he has blessed us with “Citizens Unite”, a raw, nasty bassquake, which has been obliterating dancefloors for some time now with its masterful drum programming, insane bass and THAT drum roll. THIS is what drumstep should sound like. Fedka the Irritant is probably best known as the trombonist in the excellent band Pest (Ninja Tune), alongside Ben Pest (Panic Bridge, Victim, Bonus Round). He’s also a seriously original and versatile producer in his own right. He has released on Panic Bridge, alongside the other Pest members and his live “trombone techno” sets are something to behold. “Watch Them Get Killed” is wonky techno at its finest. Its tight drums, chopped up hip-hop vocals and the beautifully deranged, yet ferociously funky melody make this track seriously addictive. Expect to hear a lot more from this man on Horror Boogie Records in the not-too-distant future. Michael Forshaw has smashed many a rave with his live onslaught of fucked up electro, techno, rave and booty. He has released on many labels over the years such as Penalty, Miditonal, Flaw, his own imprint Chan ‘n’ Mikes and most recently, Coin Operated. “Cookietag McStarrwerk” is a live, mashed up, sample-laden (namely the classic “Whoomp! There it is” vocal) rave/breaks/booty monster and has been a staple of his recent live sets. Last and certainly not least, is the mighty Subhead. As a solo artist, Jason Leach has released on his own Death to Vinyl, Fix UK and Subhead imprints, alongside his work for Mercurochrome, Input Output Inc. and Don’t. In total he has released well over 100 records, having also been involved in several notable collaborations. “Stefan Wolfe” is a driving, peak-time, techno juggernaut. Its atmospheric beginning hypnotises you into a false sense of security, before it hits you with a dose of raw energy – crunchy hi-hats, solid kicks and a funky-ass bassline, leading on to a finale of full-blown squelchy wrongness.
