Anyone who paid even the slightest bit of attention last year will know that Demand Records had an incredible 2011. Releasing music from the likes of BTK, Spectrasoul, Lost Sequence & Codeshaper, Lenzman, Heavy1, Optiv, Spinline, Hydro and LSB, Demand has certainly made its mark on the D&B scene and they show no signs of stopping during 2012. The first Demand release of the year comes from Mindmapper, teaming up with Silvahfonk on the A side and Fre4knc on the AA to create a huge single packed with infectious D&B energy. ‘Flash Forward’ takes no prisoners with a deep and dark atmosphere that’s balanced with sharp beats and a cavernous bassline. Meanwhile ‘Clear Distinction’ peps things up with a filthy Reece that punctuates the end of phrases perfectly, taking this track to another level. Kick starting 2012 with a bang, this single is yet another immense addition to the Demand catalogue and an amazing Demand debut from Mindmapper, Silvahfonk and Fre4knc. For our third instalment on Mars Recordings we’ve decided to go for Green Vinyl! This has nothing to do with Aliens, we wouldn’t be that obvious, but it’s the colour chosen by the artists and we think it looks like another great Mars package. Musically, well Edward Oberon & Paul T have conjured up 2 awesome tracks. “Love is” is absolutely sublime with it’s warm bass line and delicate sounds to the breakdown, while keeping the drums nice and punchy, a great tune to roll out. “Absolute” harks back to the deep sounds of old Good looking by the likes of Big Bud or Tayla. Ridiculous sub-lo bass and deep strings, this is how Mars do things and we feel it’s another quality 12″ where the music & the packaging matters.

On “EP 2″ polish producer The Phantom demonstrates he’s a master at creating a soulful, genre-bending, futuristic blend, whilst paying homage to rich Chicago, UK garage, and Detroit traditions, to name but a few. On the A-side “Ceremony” starts off on a smooth hip hop flavored tip, before brilliantly building bridges to piano driven house. “Gothic” holds tight to hybrid thoughts with its melodically mutant, starry-eyed take on grime. As obvious as Techno and House’s heavy influence is on 3024, one of the most consistent reference points has been the machine soul emanating from the city of Detroit for the last 30 odd years. We’ll spare you yet another Euro-centric pseudo-Sociology lecture but the combination of geography, economics and community has produced music with an influence has consistently reached far beyond Michigan state. For our 17th release 3024 is honoured to continue our trek into the analogue wilderness with another artist heavily inspired by the city, Berlin’s near legendary Redshape. An incredibly well respected artist renowned for his electrifying live sets we’re incredibly proud to present a concise 2 track release, the latest addition to a notably selective discography. A-Side ‘Throw In Dirt’ opens with vintage drum machines locked into a stooped groove as hi-hats spark off the top while a heavily filtered and pitched vocal loop offers dead eyed encouragement. An improbably girthsome analogue bass line curdles almost to the point of sinister before an unambiguously menacing fog of whining synths starts to descend while kick, snare & hats spark and simmer off one another. At the tracks peak another unsettlingly simple melody is played out on keys, before the whole ensemble rumbles over the horizon. After such an oppressive opener, ‘The Land’ is a noticeable change of pace. A horizon spanning kick underpins gospel’ish vocal snatches as the familiar hissing of synthesized cymbals shifts and builds on top of bass that’s more shudder than line. As these elements coil tighter around one another chiming pads build gradually, until the cymbal rush is momentarily halted, before redoubling it’s efforts as the synths become increasingly turbulent. A sudden shift into brighter chords and the arrival of some understated 808 textures push the track further into machine gospel territory and towards a resolution. We’re particularly proud of 3024-017′s sleeve design as Erosie continues to develop and refine his signature style showcasing a striking and thematically consistent palette switch up.

After a prolific 2011, Punch Drunk jump straight back in to action in the New Year with the searing percussion of new signing Tessela. Direct from his debut for Dublin’s ever impressive All City label last year, Tessela joins the ranks of Punch Drunk to kick start the year in fine style. With a signature razor sharp rhythmical workout and erupting molten subs, lead track ‘D Jane’ unleashes Richter scale tremors unto the dance. Without a pause for breath, the greased rolling funk of ‘Channel’ keeps the pressure at boiling point with it’s DND / Menta style bass line swagger and punctuated chops. Two devastating dance floor tracks that make for an impressive Punch Drunk debut. Expect to hear a lot more from Tessela in 2012.

Built on a wave of solid drums before unleashing its full force with a maniacal, mechanised baseline that writhes through the core of the track, wiring itself around the ambient tones, strings and hooks. Up next “Ears Lowered”is a schizophrenic balance of the above. Delicate melodies combined with an elevating, progressive & relentless opening builds tension superbly before bringing in a chaotic drop. Showing off the sleazy and darker side of this pioneering sound with maximum impact. Cyrus delivers this special two-track release, a perfect calling card from a producer who holds such longstanding dubstep status.
