Two years after kicking off FOOTPRINTS with “Devil Inside” PRINT001, the mighty Calibre returns to grace Zero T’s label with this three track EP. This release showcases Calibre’s diverse genius, with two house tracks and one dubby DnB roller. Title track “Rennaisance” is a smooth jazz/dub deep house affair, complete with trademark Calibre horn and vocal snippets. ”Reach” is a more uptempo, US Garage style number. Featured on Zero T FABRICLIVE052. Finally we have the Drum and Bass end of things covered with “Plugs”. From the moment the Bristol-esque sub drops it can only be one man. EXIT043 – Dub Phizix & Skittles – I’m A Creator – 12″ Vinyl
When Dub Phizix last graced the Exit catalogue alongside Skeptical and Strategy for the now classic ‘Marka’ single, the response was immense. Getting played by DJ’s across the board from the likes of Skream, David Rodigan, Shy FX, Chase & Status, Andy C, dBridge, Marcus Intalex, Toddla T, Mista Jam, Friction, Zane Lowe, Breakage, Mary Anne Hobbs (In fact, there’s probably too many DJ’s names to fit on this page) it became not only a club and radio anthem but also a Youtube hit with nearly 2 million plays to date. Just over a year later, a couple of trips DJing around the world he’s back with another one of Manchester’s finest MC’s (also from the Estate Recordings camp) Skittles. Hot off the back of his album ‘Poor with £100 trainers’ he combines with Dub Phizix on ‘Im a Creator’ to make another yet dancefloor anthem. Tearing up clubs and festivals since the distant summer months, it’s become another certified DJ tool guaranteed get any party going.

BMT013 – Stray & Frederic Robinson – When It Rains / Thumbprint – 12″ Vinyl
Having spent more than seventeen cross-genre years featuring on some of dance music’s most prestigious imprints, Blu Mar Ten has opened the doors of their own label to a host of fresh young talent emerging from the leftfield of Drum & Bass and beyond. With a growing list of talent delivering a rollercoaster of emotions and armed with a desire to stand out rather than fit in, Blu Mar Ten Music (BMTM) is rapidly becoming a label to watch. The fourth release in this new chapter is bought to us by Stray & Frederic Robinson. Darlings of tastemakers across the spectrum, from Gilles Peterson to London Elektricity, Stray & Frederic Robinson specialise in complex, atmospheric tracks whose subtlety and musicality defies the brash conventions of contemporary dance music. Having already featured separately on leading labels Critical Records, Hospital Records, Med School, Brownswood, Exit, Invisible and many more we’re honoured to host the first collaboration between these two incredibly dynamic young producers. Stray: When it Rains – Almost a pulse rather than a track, When it Rains demands the listener’s attention not by shouting but by murmuring it’s message in the most restrained way possible. Muted soundscapes, rhodes and detached vocals are underpinned with the distant drone of city traffic, conjuring up images of a metropolis coming to life in the early morning. Only the hypnotic throb of a kick drum and sub-bass survive to remind the listener of When it Rain’s jungle origins. This deeply nuanced track explores the outer limits of abstract Drum & Bass in an exceptionally elegant and beautiful fashion. Stray & Frederic Robinson: Thumbprint – This first collaboration between the duo came into being in the summer of 2012 when Frederic Robinson left Austria to visit London for the first time. Four sleepless days and nights of studio confinement culminated in this neurotic chimera of tortured cellos and fractured breaks. Like mad scientists the pair have layered the scraping of stringed instruments over kaleidoscopic vocals while schizophrenic drums and percussion chatter like distressed, half-stepping barcodes. Thumbprint is an outstanding collision of talent and is unlikely to be the last alliance between these enfants terribles of modern electronic music.

New House Music Releases

CONVEX005 – Wraetlic – Wraetlic Sampler 1 – 10″ Vinyl
A new side project from the Scottish techno wizard Mr Smoke, named Wraetlic, meaning wraith like in Anglo Saxon, perfectly conjures up the other worldliness of this project. The opener on this 10” sampler is Rats, a particularly unsettling, discordant, semi-glitched scrape of electronica. Refrain morphs out of the gentle glint of sparkling bleeps, dissolving into grainy mulch, much like the spooked soul of The Watchig Eye. Until Scuba’s SCB persona stretches Rats over a marauding 7 mins of prime techno. 8.5/10 Mark Gurney – DJ Mag

CCB12008 – Jean Nipon – Put It In The Trunk / Black Things On Desk / 35 Thieves – 12″ Vinyl
To bring you the 8th release, ClekClekBoom searched far and wide for the elusive Jean Nipon. Their journey took them to the shadowy depths of mystic swamps from where this modern-day druid had to be carefully coaxed into the studio. But trust-us, it was well worth the effort! On his first release for ClekClekBoom, the Institubes original showcases 3 tracks of hard-hitting, deftly-produced, dance-floor menace. “Put It In The Trunk” combines cascading percussion, disturbingly nonchalant vocal snippets and deep, propulsive, subs. With “Black Things On Desk” Jean Nipon employs unnervingly detuned vocal samples woven into irresistibly pulsating, punchy percussion. The final tune, “35 Thieves” sees our enigmatic wizzard drop subtle snatches of melody in amongst a grooving beat which, as ever, strikes the perfect balance between toughness and delicacy. CCB008 is certain to tear apart dance-floors everywhere with its heavy-hitting, baleful beats. But like any unknown quantity, handle with caution.

DP076 – Caspa Ft. Mighty High Coup – On It – 12″ Vinyl
Having teamed up with Keith Flint of Prodigy fame on the hard-hittng ‘War’ earlier this year, Dub Police boss Caspa is making a return to the label for his new single ‘On It’ featuring Atlanta-based hip hop collective Mighty High Coup. Never content to rest on his creative laurels, the track marks another evolution in the underground figurehead’s sound as he continues to push the envelope. Fusing the UK sound with which he has become synonymous and a healthy dose of hip hop swagger that he has absorbed during his time spent across the Atlantic, ‘On It’ packs some serious heat. DP076 (the ‘On It’ remix vinyl) is an impressive and eclectic package, with standout contributions coming from all areas of bass music. We get reworkings from the legendary TC, Digital Soundboy star Dismantle and Dub Police newcomer Dirty Dog. Having recently released his debut EP on the label, Dirty Dog delivers more dance floor carnage infusing the original with a dub skank and big bass tones, while TC takes the track’s hip hop foundations and rebuilds them into an evolving tearout drum and bass version. Rapidly rising talent Dismantle then rewires it into a razor sharp percussive workout, completing a standout remix package EP.

HF037 – Scuba – Hardbody – 12″ Vinyl
Following the world premiere of his new live show in London last weekend and with latest release ‘Talk Torque’ still on heavy rotation, Hotflush label boss Scuba isn’t wasting any time in returning with new single ‘Hardbody’. The single will be released through Hotflush on December 10th as a one-sided vinyl and digitally as a two week Beatport exclusive. Premiered by Jackmaster on BBC Radio1 show earlier this month, ‘Hardbody’ has quickly become the subject of fraught anticipation. A natural successor to ‘Talk Torque’ and the latest evolution of his recent output, ‘Hardbody’ is a characteristically well-sculpted piece of dance music. Exploring a deeper house sound, the track’s lush synthwork, glacial arpeggios and soft female vocals are led by propulsive percussion and throbbing low-end. The new single caps off a stellar year for the DJ, producer and label boss. Having released third album ‘Personality’ to widespread critical acclaim earlier this year, the Summer has been a flurry of festival slots and European wide gigs which culminated in the unveiling of his live show at Oval Space in East London. Imbued with Scuba’s innate musicality, integrity and creativity, the sell-out performance has been received overwhelmingly positively. Meanwhile, Hotflush continues to go from strength to strength as one of the most consistent strongholds of underground electronic music. Now home to a diverse roster of artists that counts Sigha, George FitzGerald and Shelter Point amongst its number, a burgeoning release schedule has seen recent singles from Jimmy Edgar, Jack Dixon and Recondite to name just a few.

Natan H made his debut last year with Anton Zap’s Ethereal Sound and on this occasion collaborates with longtime creative partner for an EP of bumping, unconventional house music. Title track, “For Her”, is a beast of unrivalled warmth working a deep and steady groove to perfection. On the flip, “I Know” is a soulful disco-infused workout while “Rush” takes aim squarely at the late night raver with its enveloping pads and low-slung bass line.

HS004 – Doubleheart – Roots EP – 12″ Vinyl
Our first release of the new year comes from Doubleheart, the collaborative project of two of Scotland’s longest serving creative individuals in electronic music – JD Twitch (Optimo Espacio) and Neil Landstrumm. Taking its name from title song ‘Roots’ – a sub heavy, tension building track that re-imagines Jamaican dub poet Michael Smith’s original from the seminal 1982 album ‘Mi Cyaan Believe it – the EP as a whole works as an analogue exploration into the rawer side of dance music. Working together allows these veteran producers to fuse their individual styles and musical sensibilities, combining Landstrumm’s raw aesthetic and mastery of hardware manipulation with Twitch’s unrivalled knowledge of what makes a dancefloor tick. Spawning from the depths of their imaginations and machines are 4 club-ready tracks brimming  with anticipation and menace. Although taking it’s inspiration from 80s electro and 90s acid & rave, the final result is far from a throwback to a halcyon, bygone era. Instead, they have managed to carve out a distinctive sound the bleeps and bangs it’s way firmly into 2013. 12” vinyl and digital formats will be available on January 28th. The vinyl will be packaged in a rough cast, twice debossed manilla sleeve, again designed and actualised by our designer Grampian Mountains. DJ support from Optimo, Ben UFO, Joe Goddard (Hot Chip / 2 Bears), Nightwave, Daniel Avery, Lando Kal, Sinden, Clouds, West Norwood Cassette Library, Medlar, Hot City, Tayo, Auntie Flo, Sei A…

BBB006 – Blacksmif – How The Fly Saved The River / Kangs Odyssey – 12″ Vinyl
Blacksmif aka Londonʼs kaleidoscopic Yemi Olagbaiye stepped from the shadows in 2012 with his enthralling original 12” ʻHoop Dreams / Microweightʼ, gathering heavyweight support along the way from, Laurent Garnier, Ben Westbeech aka Breach, South London Ordnance, Mary Anne Hobbs and Audiojack to name a few. Not to mention an increasingly busy calendar, which notably included performances at Glade, and Dimensions. Returning for his second release on the grass roots inspired Blah Blah Blah Records, Blacksmif delivers his biggest release to date with two tracks of simmering beauty and dance floor elegance. Lorca completes the package with his characteristically smooth, and essential, dynamism. Opening Track ʻ How The Fly Saved The Riverʼ shuffles into existence with a determined percussive energy that is punctuated by luxuriously smooth flecks of melody, all of which lure you towards the richly soulful main vocal and exhilarating breakdown. ʻKangʼs Odysseyʼ is a much more sensual affair, with its warm languid melody casually strolling towards a wistfully entwined vocal duet. With already strong support from a number of leading peers, this record is set to further enhance Blacksmifʼs rapidly growing reputation.

3024021 – Various artists – Dovercourt EP – 12″ Vinyl
Over the last year I’ve traveled to Canada frequently for gigs and got to know the small but healthy electronic music scene there. Cities like Montreal, Vancouver and Toronto have brought forth many established artists over the past few years, such as Egyptrixx, Azari & III, Basic Soul Unit, Jacques Greene, Lunice and Sixtoo, but 2012 has seen a new breed of no-nonsense house and techno producers come up via labels like Turbo Recordings and Naked Lunch. This “Dovercourt EP” features four very talented producers: Kevin McPhee, Nautiluss, Gingy and fresh face Bruce Trail. Their tracks are a dedication to their hometown of Toronto. Being removed from the house/techno epicentres of Berlin and London, these four are much less interested in what’s fashionable or trendy, and more in bringing us straight to the point, no frails jacking house music. I’ve been playing these four extensively in my DJ sets, and I hope you will too. So out to Toronto, this one’s for you! Enjoy. Martyn

ARE007 – 3rdeye – The Last Time I Saw You – 12″ Vinyl
Area Recordings kicks off 2013 with this stunning 2 tracker from leading Ozzy dubstepper James ’3rdeye’ Lyall. Already making a name for himself with a wealth of solid releases through some of dubsteps top digital labels, and a feature on our 5th release (Area Music Volume 1). We are pleased to release his first solo 12”. Following in true Area Recordings tradition we bring you 2 high quality cutting edge deep dubstep tunes, full of bass weight and musicality. Kicking things off with “The Last Time I Saw You”, the scene is clearly set. Taking what has been tagged as ‘the dungeon sound’ and pushing the boundaries with high quality technical production at the heart of a soulful dance floor meditation rhythm combining eerie atmospherics and trade mark swing with hypnotic flutes and haunting melodies. The flip side ‘Voodoo Girl’ drops with a smooth vocal and techy synth stabs, countering a lush guitar melody, sparsely used in equal measure to engross the listener. As the track builds the raw energy flows through with high quality production work. The balance between its pulsing momentum and subtle break downs clearly encapsulate 3rdeye’s solid song writing abilities not only showcasing his abilities as a top producer but also another hidden gem we present to our listeners.
