CRIT068 – Ivy Lab – Afterthought / Brat – 12″ Vinyl
At the start of 2012 Sabre, Stray and Halogenix teamed up to drop one of the most blissful pieces of drum & bass that year, ‘Oblique’. Since then the dreamteam have continued their late night studio sessions and are now ready to announce their new collaborative project, Ivy Lab. Kicking off Critical’s 2013 season is the first fruit of their labour, ‘Afterthought’, again featuring the esteemed vocal talents of Frank Carter III to create the most inspired start to the year we could wish for. ‘Afterthought’ is a masterpiece filled with polished breaks, melancholic chords, reversed strings and Carter’s unmistakable heart wrenching sounds that draw us into the spine-tingling production, coming as an Ivy Lab standard. A late night marcher or a summers day soother, the choice is yours for the most beautiful, teary-eyed slice of drum & bass you’ll have heard in a long time. Quality through and through. ‘Brat’ on the other hand shows the other side to Ivy Lab as the guys get aggy at the controls for a supremely sick peak-time performer. Creeping bleep FX open it up as the b-line seeps into the mix for a drop into some proper dance floor funk. Meticulous on the edits and the morphing bass, it’s a dirty yin to the A-side’s yang.

CYN006 – Dimension – Synth City – 12″ Vinyl
With his second 12″ forthcoming on Cyantific Music, Dimension’s rookie season is building some serious steam. A touchdown at the 2012 D&BA Awards, game-changing sets throughout the year, and a string of heavy-hitting releases is proof enough that Dimension is set to skip the sacks and sprint for the end-zone in 2013. ’Synth City’ is Dimension at his best, taking 80s loaded grooves and building something to get the cheerleaders seriously pumped for the big game. With an infectious vocal, playing this release will ensure you go home with the Prom Queen. ’Midnight Love’ sees our rookie showing taste beyond his years, laying down a feisty, soulful cut. Diggin’ in the crates is clearly a favourite extra-curricular activity, with Dimension drawing for a seriously emotive crowd-pleaser. This release is another showcase of the immense talent that is Dimension. Make sure if you see him hanging by the lockers, kicking back on the bleachers or deep in the Cyantific Music Lab, you get him to sign your yearbook before it’s too late.

New Bass Music CD

CONVEXLP002 – Wraetlic – Wraetlic – CD
Alex Menzies, better known as Alex Smoke, will release a new album in February under a new name, Wraetlic. The Scottish DJ and producer has always had a moody edge to his music, but his new LP shows him getting more introspective than ever before. The self-titled album is a more stylistically open-ended affair than many of his past records, with IDM-inspired beats and his own broody vocals. Much of the record is fueled by his own discontents, from personal issues to political ones. It follows a brief dry spell for Menzies. ”The last couple of years have been annoyingly marred by health issues,” he says. “I couldn’t work nearly as much as I’d normally like. I had composed Faust but had then had a long time not being able to write much, so when I could work again I suddenly felt a new lease of life, a feeling which I hadn’t had since my early days. I think the time away from working probably did me good in hindsight.” Wraetlic will come out on Jon Convex’s label, Convex Industries. In addition to 11 original tracks from Menzies, it includes remixes from Scuba (as SCB), Jon Convex and his Autonomic partner, dBridge. – Will Lynch, Resident Advisor

SHADES008 – Elson David – The Awakening EP – 12″ Vinyl
Elson David is the joint venture of London’s Duct and Owen Howells, two of Shades of Grey Recordings’ co-founders. Their first EP, a three-tracker of techy, acid-laced house with tongue-in-cheek nods to UK raving past and present is released on 21st January 2013.  The collaboration was born of their shared love of acid house and rave culture, and the desire to do something a bit different to their solo work. Both bring considerable talents to bear; Duct’s classical training and detailed craftsmanship, and Owen’s idiosyncratic grooves and dancefloor focus combine in unexpected ways to produce something that sounds like neither and both. This makes for a storming 8th release on Shades: opener ‘God Bless’ sets out their stall in no uncertain terms, with wiggly 303s and deft samplework building into a surefooted hybrid bubbler which owes as much to UKG as its acid house forebears. Yet follower ‘The Awakening’ will be the highlight for many: with an irresistable disco-inflected groove built from chunky beats, vocal refrains and acidified riffs on the classic ‘Rapper’s Delight’ bassline, it’s sure to blow up dancefloors everywhere. On the flip, ‘Woke’ is one for the heads; a full-on acid workout that takes no prisoners for the duration.  Awakening forms the eighth release on Shades of Grey; an imprint set up by Duct , Fybe:one and Owen Howells, and dedicated to showcasing the best emerging talent in the UK scene.

CIV046 – Ital Tek – Hyper Real EP – 12″ Vinyl
Hyper Real is Ital Tek’s first transmission for Civil Music. Four original tracks exploring exploring footwork’s rhythmic palette, plus remixes from Deft and Throwing Snow. With three albums for Planet Mu to his name Alan Myson has been evolving his dextrous dancefloor electronica, techy IDM-driven dubstep, glitch-hop and post-dubstep forms for approaching a decade. Impressively adept at shrugging off the constraints of genre identification, Hyper Real further reveals Myson’s stylistic slipperiness. Inspired by the febrility and tension/release of Chicago Footwork rhythms – and continuing where his recent long player for Planet Mu, ‘Nebula Dance’, left off – Hyper Real EP sees Ital Tek again morphing the rhythmic geometry around footwork’s 160BPM and further advancing his instinctive, deep and melodic arrangements, dramatic drum work and impressionistic synths.

IMRV003 – Gantz – Enso / Siyam – 12″ Vinyl
Every so often a producer comes through and changes the game a little; crafting new dimensions and sonic pathways within sounds that leave them operating in a league of their own when it comes to originality. For many within Dubstep circles, from DJs and producers to the listeners and heads on the dancefloor at the receiving end of his sub-driven beats, Gantz is that breath of fresh air with the inherent creative instinct to deviate from the same played-out formulas and boilerplates. Meticulously assembling tracks from his lab in Istanbul, Gantz gains heightened prominence with each release and this February sees him return to Innamind Recordings to further stake his claim as one of the circuit’s most engaging talents.  A label progressing on a similarly meteoric trajectory to Gantz, Innamind were perhaps one of the most successful emergent imprints of 2012, providing a platform for an exciting stable of like-minded artists to release music with real longevity, culminating with a pair of full vinyl transmissions from Kiwi dons Perverse and latterly Catacombs. Forging the perfect partnership, Gantz and Innamind team up for the label’s third vinyl instalment featuring ‘Siyam’ and ‘Enso’, a killer double header that will assault soundsystems from London to Christchurch, forming a statement of intent for the quality in store this year. As with many of Gantz’s productions, focus is immediately drawn to the probing and detailed percussive arrangements that dart and weave unpredictably through the mix. The bassline on ‘Siyam’ is like an unstoppable current of pent up Jungle energy, propelling the track with tumbling slabs of pure bassweight beneath persistent war drums and neon rave sirens. It’s reminiscent of the golden age of Skull Disco material but reinterpreted, updated and retrofitted with Gantz’s inimitable aesthetic signature.  In an equally leftfield vein as ‘Siyam’, ‘Enso’ has decidedly macabre edge as the intro’s discordant synths ring out intermittently like an alarm, as if to warn of the sheer impact to come. As the main section breaks, enveloping waves of sub-frequency undulate with tidal-force, pierced by stuttering woodblocks and snares that reverberate like gunshots. The atmosphere is tense and unforgiving, littered with quaint gasps of vocals; a truly unique darkside monster that chills you to the core.

2 Gantz – Siyam

NMN006 – Perverse – Echolocation / Tempest – 12″ Vinyl
Operating straight out of Poland, New Moon Recordings have steadily pieced together an eclectic discography that has firmly highlighted them as one of the most exciting labels on the Dubstep landscape. Delivering 5 releases of pure sub-sonic force with class from production talent including Phaeleh, Killawatt, Biome, Thelem, Indigo and Hatti Vatti, quality control measures are high and the beats are uncompromising. With a blistering standard set, for their 6th release they look to Kiwi upstarts Perverse to keep the momentum rolling with their dark, visceral interpretations of Dubstep’s foundational sound. Three tracks feature to form a triple headed monster and they come well supported by Youngsta and a whole host of the scene’s most discerning DJs. The lead track ‘Echolocation’ is most certainly one for the skankers as Perverse kick off proceedings by alternating rolling tribal styled bongo patters with fierce Reece mutations and rigid kick snare combinations that swing the groove back and forth across a chilling backdrop. The flipside ‘Tempest’ conjures an undulating pulse of seismic sub-bass that lurks beneath minimal halfstepping drum patterns and ambient harmonies that bristle uneasily with sinister sound design. In a change of pace, the digital bonus track ‘Somber’, injects vividly introspective melancholic soul best suited for the post-rave aftermath, rounding off a killer release that further demonstrates their degree of accomplishment and scope as musicians.

b Perverse – Tempest
