NCQL annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of “The Framed Dreams Of Loki”. The track nods to DJ Premier, Prefuse 73 and classic Metalheadz D&B Hidden Agenda style and there’s a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. It sounds like a mess – it’s anything but ! This is uplifting breakbeat at it’s very best. It’s not often a tune gets played twice by Bailey on his BBC 1Xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. The flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. A strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a Drum & Bass track these days but refreshing to hear. DJ Flight thought so and has aired it on one of her “Next Chapter” Rinse FM broadcasts.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. Their debut releases in 2009 found their way into the record bags of scene luminaries such as Fabio, Marcus Intalex, DJ Hype, Spectrasoul, and Alix Perez- as well as gaining attention outside of the genre for their emotive and progressive take on Drum and Bass with support from artists as varied as Rob Da Bank, Jazzanova, Mary Ann Hobbs and Laurent Garnier. Coming bang up to date, 2011 saw their music grace some of the biggest and most prestigious labels in bass music with releases dropping on Renegade Hardware, Horizons Music and arguably one of the most highly awaited singles of the year “Shadowplay” on Shy Fx’s huge Digital Soundboy imprint.Entering in to 2012, Blocks and Escher present their own label, Narratives Music. Formed primarily as an outlet for their own work alongside collaborations and remixes; the emphasis is on releasing music which encapsulates the atmosphere, emotion and excitement that made them fall in love with the genre in the 1990’s. The Narratives name itself, is derived from the imagery and stories felt and gathered from music; the way that a listener may cast their own interpretation and build their own subjective narrative. The three tracks on the debut release demand to be listened to in their entirety. So in October last year Granholme finally became a reality with the release of Graphic’s Wiping The Eye EP. As the first release on a label no one had heard of it was both humbling (people were actually willing to listen) and reassuring (after being obsessed with the tracks from early on) to see the support from a bunch of people. A large and sincere thank you for that. You might have spotted the shift in sound of the last track, a well received remix by Zoltan that was later given away on XLR8R.com (& is now on our soundcloud page). We’re finally ready to release GHM-002, a 3 track Zoltan EP with Graphics returning the favour with an extra promo only remix. It’s a change in tone from our first release flying it’s floor filling ambitions with pride, and for that we are thankful. ’Pluton’ opens the EP with a relentless crack and percussive chatter quickly joined by diva glitches and gyroscope bass stirring, before said low end rotations and hi hats resolve themselves into motorik syncopation, periodically cooling down before bursting back into life. Flipside ‘When I’m’ further ups the raver uniting stakes with crunching ST-esque kicks & snares and chiming vocals building into plunging breakdowns, all sucked down by a heaving space where the low end should be. Digi-only track ‘You Don’t’ brings the EP to a close with a further refinement of ‘Pluton’s helicopter bass, adding hammering acid flecked psychosis to the party. There’s also a vaguely recognizable vocal buried in there that might have kept the track from vinyl inclusion, but we wouldn’t know about that.Finally there’s Graphics aforementioned rework of ‘When I’m', due to be released as a free promo download in the coming month. More in tune with the post-rave dawn crawl home, Graphics slashes the tempo while the vocal is twisted into an unintelligible taunt and isolated kicks & stomach cramp synths coalesce into a uniquely dead eyed shuffle. Is there anything left to say about Oliver ‘Skream’ Jones the original Dub-step wonder kid that hasn’t already been said, probably not, but for those of you that don’t know here’s a brief history. Skream is one of the founder members of the then UK’s Dubstep movement alongside Digital Mystikz, Benga, Loefah, Kode9 etc and has taken the scene from its original darkest depths of Croydon to the top of the worldwide charts in less than 7 years. Currently one third of the chart topping super group ‘Magnetic Man’ alongside Artwork and Benga, the latter with whom he has travelled the globe DJing, selling out clubs, gigs and festivals wherever they go and who now have a semi regular prime time dance show on BBC Radio 1 showcasing the freshest and heaviest Dubstep joints. I think it’s safe to say without Skream the world of Dubstep would be in a very, very different place.Although some of Skream’s recent productions are finding their way onto daytime radio he has always been an ambassador of hard experimental underground UK dance music and this is exactly what he has delivered for DEEP MEDi. Gritty & Phatty Drummer are his second release for Mala’s (label and showcase Skream’s unquestionable production talent and ear for some of the coldest, stripped back skeletal rhythms around, both tracks are packed with enough dread and sub-weight to give you nightmares, strictly soundsystem music…

In part, Pieter ‘Presk’ Willems’ support is responsible for the label’s inception. In a short space of time Presk has built up a solid and impressively distinct sounding catalogue of work released on respected imprints such as Ramp sister label Fourth Wave and Doc Daneeka’s Ten Thousand Yen. Making a name for himself with nothing more than his hands and impeccable taste, Yuri ‘Cinnaman’ Boselie has become somewhat of a musical institution in Amsterdam. He’s the man behind the ground breaking Colors nights and is responsible for the equally forward thinking Beat Dimensions compilations. The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other.Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along.On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London.

Sometime you can’t keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music.First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta’s Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and ? Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry’s original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read’s killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour.On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro’s original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it’s release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. After the widespread success of PNTS001 (Visionistʼs ʻMr. 67ʼ), the South London based imprint returns with another hard hitter in Magnumʼs ʻAll Over Me E.P.ʼ Fresh from recent moves on Nightshifters, Gradient Audio, Soukouch Ethnik and Inhale including a remix of Canblaster, the Puerto Rican producer has quickly built up much notoriety in his home country and is beginning to develop a following in the UK with numerous plays from Rinse FMʼs Scratcha DVA and Randomer.The title track of this latest excursion is as much a robust 808/909 dance floor mover as it is an all out, arms in the air, hairs on the back of your neck serotonin overload. Its winding arpeggiated synths, lush pads, and tear-jerking vocals show Magnum to be an artist of meticulous attention to detail. On the b-side, ʻDenseʼ is a straight up banger. Crafty bass deployment, rustic synth chords and informed jungle referencing all contribute to what has got to be one of the hardest hitting tracks this winter. Also on the b is the French Fries remix of ʻDenseʼ. As we all know anything the Parisian touches turns to gold and this is no exception. Taking Magnumʼs original concept and stripping it back he adds a touch of grime into the melting pot, à la Slimzee sets circa 2001, and deals with the low end as only one of the finest bass operators would.

Man Make Music’s second release is a collaboration between two talented Londoners, Jack Dixon and Rick Grant. Having already made waves with individual releases on labels such as Brownswood, Hypercolour and TAKE, these two good friends now offer up a pair of brilliantly off-kilter house tracks. ‘Running Man’ is a heady mix of skipping percussion and caressing Juno synth-lines, whilst, on the flip, ‘Muted’ takes a more understated, melancholic turn, counterbalancing the ecstatic nature of the A-side. Jack and Rick’s contributions are also offset by Kevin McPhee’s weird and wonderful slow-mo interpretation of ‘Running Man’. The remix blends vocals drenched in reverb with creeping piano riffs and shows yet another musical side of a man garnering plaudits from all corners for his unique style.

The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. Paralexia steps into the arena with an alarm drone leaving you guessing what’s going to happen next and then a thudding-kick bursts a swinging breakbeat wide open in bluenote-esque fashion. As the track progresses the drums pick up the pace reminiscent of Paradox’s early work on the legendary Certificate 18 label. Dub vocal samples soaked in fx, eerie soundscapes and distorted subs add a deep rumble to the intricately-placed breaks and tension of Paralexia. His debut album, ‘Live For Never,’ reminded the electronic world of the intricacies and emotional heights of Drum & Bass, and carried the genre into new realms of sonic possibility. ‘Live For Never’ appealed to different scenes across the board (and around the world), receiving rapturous applause from electronic music’s toughest critics (Resident Advisor, Boomkat, FACT) and magazine gurus alike (DJ Magazine, IDJ).In March 2011, Consequence made his second album appearance on Exit Records with Joe Seven, as They Live: the duo’s ‘Cancel Standard’ was an immersive, sci-fi laced album that set the bar for the year rather high. Consequence decided to end 2011 with one more album, however: his long-awaited sophomore solo LP: ‘Test Dream.’‘Test Dream’ is not for those who expect the next logical evolution of ‘Live For Never.’ It’s also not for the unadventurous, nor for those who seek easily digestible music. Skream is one of the founder members of the then UK’s Dubstep movement alongside Digital Mystikz, Benga, Loefah, Kode9 etc and has taken the scene from its original darkest depths of Croydon to the top of the worldwide charts in less than 7 years. Currently one third of the chart topping super group ‘Magnetic Man’ alongside Artwork and Benga, the latter with whom he has travelled the globe DJing, selling out clubs, gigs and festivals wherever they go and who now have a semi regular prime time dance show on BBC Radio 1 showcasing the freshest and heaviest Dubstep joints. But the duo’s long-awaited debut long player marks their first collaboration that has absolutely no boundaries: as experimental and creative as it gets. True to form, as most Exit Records releases go, ‘Burning Shadows’ sees both producers finding their stride, and treading into surprising new sonic territories from a few different directions. Inspired by the new music he was purchasing at the time, FIS went hard to work at designing his own unique sound. The results were instantly quality, and a CD handed to label boss Presha began his story. With dBridge and Consequence major fans and an Exit Records release on the horizon, Tokyo Prose sat down with FIS to work on creating a fusion of their 2 styles. ‘The Dares’ was the first off the mark, instantly becoming a playlist favourite with the Exit records family, and more recently, ‘The Truths’ has completed the 10″ in the same grinding, surging roll ‘The Dares’ started with. Depth and subtle complexity with menacing atmos, this is future music. DJ support from dBridge, Loxy, ASC, Consequence, Presha and lots more once they get the tunes.

Sometime you can’t keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music.First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta’s Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and ? Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry’s original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read’s killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour.On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro’s original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it’s release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other.Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along.On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London

Limited to 150 white label pressing. “Look to the east for the coming of a black king.”Having smashed dancehalls and festivals throughout Europe over the last 7 years, Trojan Sound System have returned to the studio following their critically acclaimed debut album on Trojan records, “New Rebel Stories”. The songs evolved on classic Reggae anthems in a live sound system context and are now being translated into studio tracks. Debuted at Outlook festival’s main stage a few weeks ago, it destroyed thousands of reggae, dubstep and jungle heads.Trojan Sound System is the performance unit of legendary reggae label Trojan Records. The Sound comprises Daddy Ad, Earl Gateshead, Superfour, Chucky Banton and Jah Buck, all top performers on the London and European sound system scene. They perform at festivals and reggae events all over the world and have crossed over into Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and Dance music clubs and festivals. Recent main stage slots include Camp Bestival, The Garden Festival, Soundwave festival, Reggae Sun Ska and Outlook festival amongst many others. Last year they also sold out two shows at London’s Koko, a serious feat and a benchmark in this authentic reggae sound’s fanbase and potential and return to Koko on October 15th. They are also playing an in-store at London’s Rough Trade East in late September. “Turn to the East” was written by Superfour, TSS’s energetic and blind vocalist with conscious lyrics and a passionate delivery. The heartfelt chorus is sung by Chucky Banton. The title is inspired by the biblical reference “Look to the east for the coming of a black king” and celebrates numerous black aspirations. Musically, it uses contemporary forms to produce the feel of an ‘80s roots 12” with overpowering bass driving it throughout. Two times DMC champ and Beardyman collaborator, JFB, unleashes a relentless dubstep remix of the track on the B side. There are a string of single releases in the run up to the album on TSS records limited edition white label with more from Toddla T, Jerry Dammers and many more at the production helm with Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad.

Throughout 3024′s short history, the label has always carried a heavy trace of techno in its makeup: an inevitable reflection of its founder’s roots in early 90s warehouse parties. Our 15th release bears that influence out, and stands as the label’s most expansive release so far – a 4 track EP from the utterly inimitable Mosca. Leaping straight onto our radar with his opening combination of the ‘Square One / Nike’ 12’ and ‘Gold Bricks, I See You,’ it’s been a long-held ambition to work with a producer whose diversity has never once strayed into tokenism. Renowned for his glacial work rate, we bided our time as the Mosca sound veered off into new territories – and it’s with great pleasure we present the fruits of our patience here. Opening proceedings of Mosca’s ‘Wavey’ EP is ‘Dom Perignon’, a cavernous roller with a gravity inverting bass drum and dub-infused atmospherics. Developing both the intricacy of its drum programming and the implicit tension of its arrangement towards the sunrise, it’s the perfect entry point for this new side of the Mosca sound. ‘Orange Jack’ further develops this gloaming swing, both deeper into the recesses of aquatic frequency while simultaneously ramping up the groove into ultra loose woodblock territory as looped snatches of Hip Hop acapella drive out any lingering ghost’s. Tearing any hint of historical reverence away is a constantly warping bass part that is more fissure than line, and bubbling textures hinting at further shifts to come. Immediately intensifying proceedings, ‘Jager’s renewed urgency guides the EP back towards more conventional Techno, in form if not implementation. Huge phased hi-hats and gaseous sub frequencies push a Friedrichshain pulse relentlessly forward, briefly collapsing as a disembodied fire & brimstone host exhorts an unidentified audience (or maybe the track) back onto its feet and onwards with yet more resolve. Coiling and uncoiling elements of the arrangement in this second half, a single electric piano chord makes its appearance, providing an understated link back to the previous 2 tracks’ roots. Available as a digital-only track, ‘Wray & Neph’ takes the component influences of its 3 vinyl bound siblings and fuses them together as the track both hardest to classify – and also the most classically Mosca sounding. Queasy waves of synth are joined by tight hi hats and a dislocated kick before a clipped percussive swing emerges out of the haze. Marrying a defiantly 8 bar-esque bass rumble and sporadic fizzing synth breaks with shifts back into stripped down 4×4 Motorik it encapsulates The Wavey EP and all its murky splendor. As ever, Erosie blesses 3024-016 with the latest sleeve in his ever evolving series of work for 3024, in the style that has defined the label as much as its A&R policy.

A poignant piano interjects, providing an enlightening succession that reinforces the enchanting ethereal nature of the track. ‘Vibrations’ contrasts a rough bassline and rounded percussion with the airy atmosphere that contains them. Imploding toms and lone delayed snares are the order of the day while a lazy bassline strolls over the top. Echoing, soulful synths overlap each other, reaching ever higher as the track climaxes. ‘Cold World’ enforces a swinging off-centre tempo, resonating, reflecting synths emerge, followed closely by modulated keys and glistening atmosphere. “Fuck the ghetto, think about space”Rounding up the package are 2 excellent remixes. Machinedrum delivers a footwork rework of ‘Vibrations’ that ups the energy levels and warps the bassline into a much darker, foreboding being. While Ital Tek adds sinister overtones to his take on ‘Swimming Dragon’. Calculated and ominous in it’s approach it loses none of the spacious atmospherics that are essential to the track. Captivating strings are added to the mix to create a well-rounded piece of ambitious proportions.

The first 12” featuring Think and Jack Sparrow is being followed by a release of a set of four tracks by Hatti Vatti (real name Piotr Kalinski) who has already established himself with releases on britishlabels Mindset and On The Edge. The EP, which is available on 12″ vinyl and mp3 formats, is a kind of flashback of the diverse compositions of Hatti Vatti created in the Last year – from collaborations with singers associated with reggae and dub music, through tracks recorded during his prolonged visit to Cairo and moody UK garage, also including a 170 bpm collaboration with Mindset label boss and rising star of Autonomic – Indigo.
