New D&B CD

HE002CD – Makoto – Souled Out – CD
It’s been 4 years since the release of Makoto’s last full length album, Believe In My Soul, on Good Looking Records. A lot has changed in the world of electronic music since then, and as an artist, Makoto has also grown considerably. Spreading his wings by first establishing his own record label, Human Elements, Makoto has kept up a steady release flow of both his own music and other artists through his own label as well as others’ such as DJ Marky’s Innerground Records and Fabio’s Creative Source. By 2010 however, Makoto felt the time had come to once again return to the depths of his studio in Tokyo to craft another full length album. For the most part, Souled Out explores new frontiers for the artist primarily known as Japan’s drum and bass MVP. Consisting of a wide variety of tempos and beats, the album is, at first, quite a different experience when compared to his past work. However, it quickly becomes clear that the trademark Makoto style of bass heavy energy drenched with funk & soul still flows freely through each song. There has also been a decided shift away from an over-use of samples and the result is a much more musical experience, which takes the listener on a journey through many emotions. Lush chords, fat basses from hardware synths and a good number of exceptionally talented vocalists and instrumentalists breathe life into the tracks, delivering that human touch Makoto strives for in his music. Feelings run deep on the album, and there’s a good amount of uplifting and emotion driven tunes which fit a variety of moods. “Tower of Love”, which features vocalist Paul Randolph of Jazzanova fame, is one of the freshest drum and bass tunes of the past decade, fusing heavy bass with a classic Motown sound in a way that has simply never been done before. “Girl I’m Running Back 2 U”, featuring singerChristian Urich – a member of the jazz band Tortured Soul who has worked with the likes of Incognito & DJ Spinna – tells a tale of regretting a missed chance at love in a style that truly shows Makoto’s musical diversity. While the song is deep and could easily fit into a club garage or house set, its infectious funk and bumpy drums mean that it would sound just right on prime time radio. At the other end of the scale, the track “Woe” written with Makoto’s long time vocalist partner Deeizm, is an empowered melancholic piece. With rising pads and sultry, heartfelt lyrics, minimal but heavy beats and a synthetic crescendo that punches through the speakers to send a shiver down your spine. To put it simply, the track really is something special. Alongside the slower tempos, “Keep Me Down” featuring Angela Johnson features Makoto’s trademark sound of a heavy bass line and amen break rumbling underneath huge soulful vocals and driving chords. Undeniably a guaranteed dance floor favourite. Souled Out doesn’t just deliver the same level of quality you’ve come to expect from Makoto, it expands on it. There’s something for everyone on the release, and the album is a testament to the breadth of experience and talent the producer commands, as he easily shifts between tempos, genres and moods, while still maintaining his style of soul infused, funky, futuristic and forward electronic music.

UM005 – Fields – Foundations / Unspoken – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After his brother Villem dropped 2 slices of ice cold beats for the last Utopia release, Fields comes with the polar opposite with summer flavours for his first ever solo 12″. The A side is ‘Foundations’, a warm sunshine-filled bass heavy roller with a touch of the melancholy. Driven by simplistic drums shrouded wonderfully by subtle percussion, this roller hits heavy with the bassline, timed perfectly out of a down-sweeping Rhodes, backed-up by a loopy vocal which can only move you. On the flip is a track called ‘Unspoken’, a deep sub-filled minimal affair. It gently warms you with nuanced harps and percussion, before hitting you with stripped-back drums and a wall of sub bass. Dj support: LTJ Bukem, Bailey, Loxy, Total Science, Break, Spectrasoul, Mikal, Flight, Survival and many distinguished others.

New Bass Music releases

2NDRP12013 – DjRum – ‘Mountains EP’ Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
A main player behind the seminal Yardcore nights in London and with previous releases with On the Edge and Smokin Sessions, DjRUM has always existed on the alternative edge of a number of scenes, but after producing a stunning remix of LV and Message To Bears ft Zaki Ibrahim “Explode” for 2nd Drop’s last release, his talent is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Now 2nd Drop are proud to present a full EP of original material. The DjRum EP will be released in two parts. EP Part 1: Undercoat leads the first part in typical DjRUM style; multiple layers of gravelly, heavily charged atmosphere, ever shifting beat patterns, murky pockets of drums and percussion and his trademark use of epic strings. This moody cut builds and builds throughout and before you know it the beats have jumped from half step into sultry techno. Mountains pt 1 on the flip picks up from where Undercoat left off, dropping straight into pulsing techno drums that gallop away and build into sheets of shifting emotive synths, accompanied with haunting vocals snippets. Packed with detail and nuance, this track keep on giving with every listen. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record. Check more of his work at www.matttaylor.co.uk

SCREW006 – LoKo – Keep Rising / Keep Rising (KOAN Sound Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Screwloose is all about gripping basslines that tear dance floors apart. This release features a wonderfully original D&B track by LoKo along with a beast of remix by KOAN Sound. What makes this a great release is the fact that the two tracks are a real contrast, both at very different tempos and styles. Both tracks are pushing D&B/Dubstep/Bass music forward.

EMB007V – Clicks & Whistles – Cranberry Goose / Radiator – 12″ Vinyl
Embassy brings you two concrete tracks from the artists who’ve been on the tip of everyone’s tongue, CLICKS + WHISTLES. Comprised of Jorge Hernandez and Pete Evans, they have been gaining an incredible amount of steam within the Bass Music community over the last year. A. The fagship tune from CLICKS + WHISTLES, CRANBERRY GOOSE, showcases Pete and Jorge’s flair for richly dense harmonies and immensely inspired sound design. B. Referencing their infuences of southern hip hop, the pair give us one sexy enough to make anyone in the club dance with out thinking twice, RADIATOR, is a soothing jam dripping with heart and passion.

2NDRP12014 – DjRum – ‘Mountains EP’ Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
The second and third parts of the Mountains suite nestle snugly together on pt 2 of the EP. Dissolving from the lush techno of Mountains pt 1, Rum lightens the pressure accenting the melodic motifs of pt 1 adding an almost lilting, percussively funky rhythm, only to be broken with a galloping gabba style beat washed over by his trademark string and synth blanket. However, the pressure is short lived, as once again the track gives way to a verdant and lush pasture of classic Rum ambience. Turiya on the flip pays subtle homage to Alice Coltrane by using her later adopted spiritual name. And you can hear her ethereal jazz and harp qualities evoked through his use of melody, before dropping into a broken 2-step bump with a nicely chopped up vocal. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record. Check more of his work at www.Matttaylor.co.uk

HEK013 – Pangaea – Hex / Fatalist – 12″ Vinyl
Pangaea turns out the lights and and blesses Hemlock with two of his toughest productions yet. ’Hex’ channels the spirit of ’92 via Plastic People, picking up the most eccentric, deranged vocal along the way. ‘Eeeeeechiiiieeee’. On the flip ‘Fatalist’ is a dark-side joint of the highest order… ‘Alright. Listen. Listen. Listen.’

LIVE001 – Lorca and Gerry Read – Moments b/w Gerry Read’s Nostalgic Mix – 10″ Vinyl
We are proud to be dropping a first physical release here at Live Ones in the form of a hand numbered, hand stamped 10” vinyl. No digital and limited to 300 units. We’re not big into hype here but we are chuffed with the product… Lorca – Handling the production duties on the A side. He’s recently made the move from South West London down to Brighton and has been solidifying his name under his latest moniker (Lorca). This move has seen him play alongside the likes of James Blake, Joy Orbison, Ramadanman, XXXY to name but a few. Lorca’s sound is becoming more and more distinct, whether he’s built the track by the sea or on his London house boat you can be sure there will be a big bass wave to ride. Gerry Read – Taking care of the B side. Mr Read has also been gathering speed and stripes within the Bass scene, having just penned a contract with 2nd Drop Records. His physical releases are already getting spins from the likes of Giles Petterson on the BBC , MJ Cole, Untold plus more. He really has become a sound to be reckoned with. Read moved from the UK to a suburban post code in Australia and found little else to do except immerse himself in music. Wether he was making music or listening to old Jungle tapes his Australian sojourn has, in no small way helped to shape his sound and prepare him for his return to the UK. He’s now banging out sets alongside Deep Space Orchestra, Eliphino, Szare and the rest. A side /// Lorca /// Moments – A unique track that really tests the sound systems. It’s fuelled by the heavy bass and drums, layered with a hypnotic vocal which flows over the soundscape with ease. Suitable for all sorts of sets from House to Dubstep beats or Balearic. B side /// Gerry Read /// Nostalgic Mix – Read flips the vibe of the A side on its head. He creates a darker sparser production with this Garage inspired track, chopping up the vocal to form a nostalgic 2 steppy back drop. His reincarnation takes a different route but you still end up at the dance floor. Early morning business.

DP057 – Subscape – Universal EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Since his debut release on Dub Police back in 2008, Subscape has come a long way, quickly emerging as one of the most exciting young talents to come out of the dubstep scene. We are extremely proud to announce that he is returning stronger than ever with a brand new EP showcasing a decisive evolution in his sound. Kicking off the EP is the anthemic ‘Turn Me On’, a track built to cause havoc on any dancefloor. The dynamic combination of ecstatic synth lines and mechanized bass tones fuse together with the swinging snare hits to harness a new energy in Subscape’s music. ‘Square Albert’ takes this energy and twists it on its head with galloping percussion and colourful rave-inspired synths before bursting into double time drum lines and shooting off in a new direction. ‘Universal’ is a step into the future carried by a gargantuan wave of bass pressure as the alien lead synth line soars high into the atmosphere and the growling bassline and destructive snares force the track home. Rounding off the vinyl package, ‘Apple Candy’ takes things deeper with seductive strings, yearning vocal samples and synth lines. With an ever-growing list of international bookings stretching out before him and a growing arsenal of music, it looks like his journey is only just beginning and we are proud to be a part of it. Watch this space!

IME028 – Hodge – The Fall / Crush – 12″ Vinyl
Continuing the exploration of Bristol 4/4 variants, Immerse proudly offers forth this decisive two-tracker from the prodigious mind of Jacob Martin, better know as Hodge. You might be more familiar with Hodge from his work as part of Outboxx, who we proudly debuted on ime025. That said, he first surfaced last year with the deadly ‘Conjecture’ on another fine Bristol institution, Pollen. One thing rings true in any of the output Hodge is associated with; melody. Shirking the safety of sterile mechanics that so many producers hide behind, he tackles interplaying notes and harmonies with a fearless exuberance. Opening track ‘The Fall’ kicks off on a jerky groove and ice-cold organ murmurs, gently easing in layers and clips of sound with the same joie de vivre as Akufen and other micro-house progenitors. ‘Crush’ kicks off on a more decidedly broken tip, keeping the twostep shuffle slow and easy as whispers of garage skip in between the warm pads. The overriding vibe on Hodge’s EP is one of unpretentious, good times tunage.

New D&B Releases

SOM012 – State Of Mind – Nil By Ear EP 1 (2X12” & CD Album shrink-wrap bundle) – 12″ Vinyl x 2
2X12” & 11 track CD Album shrink-wrap bundle. Nil by Ear is Sate of Mind’s third studio album, the first two being Take Control (Uprising) & Faster than Light (SOM). This album represents the peak so far of the lads technical skills, its carefully produced from start to finish. Tracks are frequently tied together, and a lot of thought has gone into the flow of the album. This is one that can be listened too from beginning to end, as opposed to a collection of singles. However that doesn’t mean that State of Mind have forgotten about the 3am raver. Almost all of the tracks have all been smashing it up world wide over the last 6 months in their own right.Collaboration wise, the album features several of NZ’s most talented vocalists including Shapeshifter’s P.Digsss, Thomas Oliver, Sacha Vee, Mc Woody & PNC, as well as American singer 3pm. The only production collaborators are Nymfo and DNME. Several other collaborations were planned for the LP, but in the end were unable to fit.  These will be released as bonus tracks.

SOULR049 – Marcus Intalex – 21 [Vinyl Edition] – 12″ Vinyl x 3
The Vinyl version features six D&B tracks on 3×12” Vinyl. From the bright, florescent metallics of ‘Celestial Navigation,’(feat S.P.Y.) through to the darker tinges of the sharp-edged, sparse landscape of ‘Hot Hands.’ D&B gets a slightly more menacing dub makeover, while ‘Paulista’ (feat S.P.Y.) & ‘Wacky Races’ both hold the layered, tightly produced drum programming that Intalex is known for. ‘Meltdown’ is a typically immaculate, roller that stems from collaborating with Calibre. The album’s standout is the beautifully emotive ‘Climbing Up The Walls, which features the vocals of Drum & Bass producer Danny Fierce, and stands as a breathtaking, adventurous take on Radiohead. These tracks are currently being championed by the main beat seekers of D&B such as Radio 1′s Fabio & Grooverider, Hype, Friction, Tony Coleman, Nu Tone. Ant TC1, Andy C.

ADRS004 – Sensa & Haste – The Place / Don’t Forget – 12″ Vinyl
This is quite possibly Audio Danger Records biggest release to date. It features up and coming artists Sensa & Haste (AKA HYBRID MINDS). Sensa has been bubbling under the surface for sometime now and it was only a matter of time before he would be releasing tracks for Audio Danger Records. His skill, along with Haste’s passion for the music shows the pairs diversity in this formidable release. Audio Danger Records are proud to have this pairing on board. The Place oozes with originality and uses simplistic beats and rhythms to create a wonderful abstract piece of Drum and Bass. This track could be played in most sets as it has mass crossover appeal and the concept flows seamlessly throughout. Sensa & Haste (AKA HYBRID MINDS) have truly brought something new to the table. Don’t Forget is a punchy bass-line roller. It uses the straight beats of much of today’s dance floor tracks with a sick bass line that is sure to get any dance floor moving. The groove in this track is what sets it apart from other tracks in its sub genre. The tune is a must for all and Sensa has truly shown his skill in this rolling bass heavy track. Support from UKF, Netsky, Camo & Krooked, Crissy Criss (BBC 1xtra), Utah Jazz, Zen, Savage Rehab, The Risky (DnBArena Podcast), Stanza and many more.

SUBTLE005EP – Nebula – Astral Soul EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Despite the fact that he hadn’t even reached his teenage years around the time of Jungle’s hey-day in the mid nineties, that’s the sound that still influences Nebula (aka Peter Saunders) the most to this day. The “Astral Soul” EP focusses on the atmospheric and meditiative side of Nebula’s production but the breakbeat manipulation and rumbling bass people best know him for are still to the fore. Rough and smooth, ethereal and brutal, fast and slow, the strength of this collection is in the finely balanced juxtapostion of these contrasting elements. While there there is a journey to be made within each track, there is another to be made in traversing the EP as a whole – you might just feel like you’ve reached some far away universe by the end ! Whether it’s the drifting atmosphere and acrobatic amens of “Encounters”, the lush pads and tough beats of “Warm Currents”, the glistening synths and crashing snare-step of “Astral Soul”, the machine-gun rhythms and strings of “Escapsim” or the trippy breakbeats leading you to the “Hidden Oasis”, this is an adventure where horizons are broadened and new discoveries made throughout.

NU12050 – Triad – Crooked – 12″ Vinyl
Normal service is resumed on Nu Directions, returning to 170BPM with an offering from some of the drum & bass scene’s most forward-thinking producers, Triad. Triad is the name given to german duo Henree and Basstikal. Both established producers in their own right, their meeting of minds has given their productions new depth and a totally original approach to drum & bass. Releases on DSM, Critical and Horizons, plus their excellent remix of Omar’s ‘Lay It Down’, have laid the foundations for what is to be a fruitful 2011 for this collaborative project. ‘Crooked’ is a shuffling minimal work-out which uses dense atmospheres and growling bass stabs to create a haunting mood, before breaking into it’s techno fuelled, energy soaked finale. ‘The Puzzle’ again captures Triad’s unique ability to create musical soundscapes. With light snappy beats and deep stirring synths creating a track that sounds as fresh today as it will in 10 years time, future music.

FOKUZLP007S1 – Donnie Dubson – Monday Is The New Sunday Album Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
In the impressive flow of new talent in 2011 on Fokuz recordings we already had the pleasure to present the sound of Brother, Command Strange and Intelligent Manners among others. The next flavour of the funky liquid melting pot called Fokuz Recordings goes by the name Donnie Dubson. Berlin based Irishman Donnie O’Sullivan aka Donnie Dubson started releasing his funky rollers on Have a Break and Influenza Media and already featured on Fokuz on the Chronicles of the Deep LP together with Stunna back in 2007. The Grapefruit / Battlecat release on Influenza Media in 2009 got him a lot of attention and is still heard in dj sets today. This brandnew 12 inch is the sampler for the upcoming debut album called ‘Monday Is The New Sunday’, and is a good taster of what to expect! A – Rolling Roller: As the title suggests this is the roller in its purest form. Light stepping beats full of percussion and a solid deep subbass breathing on the background. Subtle edits, humming vocals and synths going from side to side to take you into a deep trance on the dancefloor. Rolling Roller is featured on Lenzmans Metalheadz podcast 24. B – Grey Jeans: Showing his funky side Donnie is a little hapier on this cut. The beat is heavier than the Rolling Roller, but the vibe is funky and warm. Most def a summer tune for the nicest time of the year! Sing along with the bassline, and make your head nodd.

REDSEAL009 – Tokyo Prose – Introducing Tokyo Prose (Phase 2) – 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition coloured vinyl: Mixed Dark Blue & White Vinyl One of the most anticipated releases for some time, we are proud to bring you the debut recordings from young Auckland, New Zealand duo Tokyo Prose. Discovered very early in their careers by DJ Presha, the two Sam’s were signed to Samurai Red Seal as core artists in a long term development deal. It has taken a few years to get to the point where we have this debut release fully polished and ready, but as you will hear the wait has been worth it. These 2 producers have quickly formed a very distinctive style that has been drawing fans in their droves. As well as many general fans of Drum and Bass music, their eager fanbase boasts name DJ’s and established producers before they have ever had a fully available product to purchase. ‘Introducing Tokyo Prose’ brings stylish swagger and musical substance to a scene overflowing with identical bare boned rollers. Gliding between minimal ambience and deep soulful steppers, these gifted young men aptly display their knack for sample selection and unique groove building. DJ support has been consistent from names like Calibre, Spectrasoul, Lenzman, Loxy, Random Movement, Lynx, Presha, Sinistarr and many more.

DMND003 – Heavy1 – Xiphactinus / Xiphactinus (Lenzman Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Proving once and for all that drum & bass is a global movement, here we have a single produced in Japan, A&R’d in Switzerland, remixed in Holland and distributed via the UK across the world. Thankfully the majority of these processes are done via the internet – otherwise we’re sure someone would have something to say about the carbon footprint of this one! Japanese producer Heavy1 takes to the helm for Demand Records’ third release, following two incredible singles featuring music from Spectrasoul, BTK, Nymfo, Lost Sequence and Codeshaper. Here you’re offered no reduction in quality as Heavy1 turns out an impeccable ride through drum & bass territory. Slowly opening with scattered hi hats and punctuating kicks, it’s not long before ‘Xiphactinus’ (a predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period if, like us, you had no idea what this was…) bares its prehistoric teeth, snapping at you with crisp snares and expertly placed sound effects. Basslines judder and bounce back and forth before engulfing you in their mighty jaws! This is undoubtedly the start of great things for Heavy1. On the flip, Demand enlists yet another well known name to add some remix action to the mix. This time it’s Metalheadz’ Lenzman who steps up, taking ‘Xiphactinus’ down a whole new aesthetic path. Turning a track that holds a brewing, unspoken menace into one with a euphoric edge isn’t an easy task, but Lenzman’s electro leads and warming bass notes manage it effortlessly. With a wave of new material ready for the second half of the year, Demand Records shows no signs of slowing their already incredible pace. Clearly a nomination for one of 2011’s hottest new D&B labels.

CITRUSLP005 – Fourward – Episodes – 12″ Vinyl x 4
The ever on point Citrus Recordings is stepping up for its 5th artist LP. after having released the debut Albums of Mindscape & Jade wich all went on for critical acclaim it’s time for Citrus to get ready for its 3rd Artist Album. This time it’s time for the debut album of ‘Fourward’! Hailing straight from lower Austria the four men collective FOURWARD started out producing music in early 2007. The boys knew each other for quite a while and shared the love and passion for drumandbass music. For them it was always a main issue not to stick to any particular tiny subgenre only, but to develop a sound of their own. All members have different musical backgrounds which fit together perfectly and provide a great studio vibe. Days went by and the boys finished a couple of tunes properly and it wasn’t long until Austrian drumandbass producer duo Body&Soul showed interest in their works. Also international artists like BBCs very own Crissy Criss began to support their music giving them airplay on his radio show. As a result of their effort FOURWARD has released quality tunes on labels like Subsonik Sound, Planet Funk and Fokuz. The year 2010 they experienced the so called ‘breakthrough’ with releases on NASCA Recordings and Fokuz followed by an epic 12inch for the legendary label VIRUS Recordings! The guys definitely didn’t stop there and being on the road now broadened their horizon even further. Resulting in a series of tunes perfectly fitting together in this 4pack 12inch. Diversity and musicallity are keywords for this album. Listen from Low Blow to You and Me, quality drum ‘n bass!!

DISF013 – Youandewan – Youandme (on My Mind) / Zeal – 12″ Vinyl
Next for Disfigured Dubz is the debut single from Leeds based producer Youandewan The story goes that one day whilst relaxing by the pool in Ibiza, Ewan’s manager played some of his demos on the soundsystem with Skream in company and he was gripped, two tracks were signed to Disfigured Dubz and here they are. A: Youandme (On my mind) harks back to the days when 2 Step garage ruled the London airwaves and gives a nostalgic look back to the pre-dubstep revolution. A crackling warm Rhodes loop and atmospheric field recordings warm the cones whilst vocal snippets creep in and float amongst the classic 2 step beats. Tension builds, temperatures rise and the bass blows like a cool breeze on a summer’s afternoon. AA: Zeal is the perfect complement to the A-side. Again with the winning combo of Rhodes piano, soulful vocals, snapping 2 step beats and glittering effects that bring the feel good factor to a maximum. This one just oozes sunshine.

3024012 – Addison Groove – It’s Got Me / Minutes Of Funk – 12″ Vinyl
In which 3024′s West Country takeover continues unabated with Addison Groove as one of 2010′s most celebrated Producers fires off a pair of brand new exclusives. ‘It’s Got Me’ drags a cornerstone of classic hip hop into the 21st century with trademark spasmodic Chicago drum acrobatics and vocal splicing working the track into a frenzy while his less acknowledged way with gauzy analogue textures never allow things to slip into the trap of dance floor bludgeon. Minutes Of Funk dials back the ferocity just enough to open up extra space for more luxurious synth washes and increasingly intricate rhythmic shifts as interlocking traces of dance floor past combine to form the thinking mans set opener.

Yes yes people, we are back!! It’s been a while, but we are going to be hitting you with some seriously good tunes this year, so watch this space. Anyway, on to the music ;) If you like you tunes big fat and heavy like an elephant on steroids, then get ready for an absolute pasting from new boy on the circuit, Depone! Depone is a producer that has really caught our ear at the Z Audio towers of late and when you hear these tunes, I’m sure you’ll understand why. All 3 tunes are fierce, dirty, gritty, disgusting and overall very well produced. The great thing about Depone is that he manages to create in your face music without pointlessly wobbling the LFO filter. There’s some real depth to this young talent and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some more great music from Depone in the very near future.

SECOPS016 – Seba & Physics – Before I Can Breathe / The Music – 12″ Vinyl
Second release on secret operations this year is by Seba & Finnish Producer and DJ Physics. “Before I can breathe” is a beatiful vocal piece with a steppy beat and a typical old skool “reese bass”. The flipside “The Music” is a heavier track that starts off with eeire strings and switches to heavily distorted beats and basslines. Watch out for secops 017 by Andyskopes & Mr. Joseph.

DSM018 – Anile – Last March EP – 12″ Vinyl
Anile, DSM’s baby-faced assassin, steps up to deliver the second artist EP on the label, and one of the most talked about releases of the second half of 2010. Climbing steadily through the ranks with releases on Loxy’s Cylon imprint and the seminal Renegade Hardware label, DSM is proud to have one of the brightest production talents currently operating in drum & bass on its roster. This EP takes DSM further into the darker territory it started exploring with DSM014 & 016 and it does not disappoint. The title track of this EP is the bouncy stepper ‘Last March’. A snarling, distorted bassline has meant that this tune has found favour with numerous a-listers in recent times and is a worthy tune for the EP to be named after. On the flip, is the ferocious ‘Disaffected’. Eeerie pads and atmospheres make way for a driving drum loop and sub bass before all hell breaks loose at the drop with one of the nastiest, most twisted reese basslines heard for a very long time. The influence of labels such as the aforementioned Renegade Hardware is obvious, and it is one of, if not the, most ferocious and devastating slice of d&b ever to grace DSM.

Hotly tipped newcomers Megabits deliver an insanely unique widescreen drum & bass/breaks/electro hybrid, while the legend that is Break delivers another stunning drum & bass remix. ‘Fingertips’ is quite simply a stunning song oozing with wild atmospheric beauty. Paper Crows have been wowing audiences with their live shows with sultry singer Emma Panas mesmerising with her spectral vocals and dramatic stage presence. With still less than a dozen gigs under their belt, they’ve already supported the likes of Jamie Woon and Clock Opera. Their next show is at the Barfly in Camden on the 4th February. A duo to watch closely throughout 2011 and beyond drop 2 minimal punchy blinders on Dispatch. Skeptical and Dub Phizix come more than correct with “Silo” and “The Enemy” and it appears we’re not the only ones that love these 2 tracks as they are getting a rather heavy dose of support from the likes of Skream, D-Bridge, Ant TC1, Octane & DLR, Survival, Loxy, Nymfo, Teebee, VC and Ulterior Motive! Watch out for more from these 2 on the label real soon!

MODULE006 – Vicious Circle & Jubei – Deliberate – 10″ Vinyl
Moving on from the last heavy hitting Modulations release and we’re treated to an even more sturdy effort from two names that need no introduction. A bit of a dream collaboration between Vicious Circle and Metalheadz man Jubei, and where better place to serve it up than from Critical’s Modulations imprint. ‘Cloak & Dagger’ wastes no time and kicks off with a solid stepping break as eerie space warped pads wrap around to suck us deep into the wormhole. Heinous bass slams on this sound system killer, perfect for some late night 3am entertaining and leaves us in no doubt of a properly undiluted low-slung king of the rollers. Nasty, naughty but nice. Sliding perfectly into the second slab and ‘Deliberate’ continues much in the same vein but it manages to up the ante with some even more sickening bassline action. Running percussion increases the pace whilst the bass stabs take it up another notch for a heads down, no nonsense slice of D&B goodness. Never fails. DJ support from Alix Perez, Rockwell, Lenzman, Kasra, D Bridge and more.

H-LINE26 – Paul Blackout – Curse On One Self / All You MFs – 12″ Vinyl
Hardline boss Paulblackout returns with two heavy dnb/hardcore crossover tracks, to follow on from the broken, deep beats of the previous Leepshec release. “Curse on one self” features tough sounding vampire samples and builds up to a crazy drop which will have you throwing shapes and playing air drums like a madman (or woman) On the flip is “all you MFs” which makes use of an amusing cartoon sample and stomps along to a halftime breakdown with double kickdrums to activate fist pumping mode. Vinyl release also includes an evil illustration by Camila Carmody, with DJ support from DJ Hidden, DJ Producer, Simon Underground, Mark N and more. This is how we’re kickin it…..

SS015 – Thought – Resist / Holism – 12″ Vinyl
Soothsayer returns with its twentieth vinyl plate and proudly presents the addition of SS015 and artist Thought to the roster. Hailing from Sofia, Bulgaria Ivan Sotirov (Thought) has quickly built a reputation for employing the hardest beats to be had in Eastern Europe. Having played Therapy Sessions and released a 12″ on the famed UK label, Obscene, Thought rise to prominence continues with his Soothsayer debut – a slab of heavy tribal breaks and halfstep riddims dubbed up plenty of dark bass. Resist is a dark tribal affair with grinding mid rage bass and intricate percussion. Stylistically the tune yields the best elements of a steppa, a roller, and a stormer all meld together in a tightly weld concoction of brutality. Bludgeoning beats and corrosive bass for the dubwize massive and rivetheads alike. Holism is a sinister tribal half steppa that has previously been slated for release by Loxy and Tech Itch. We at Soothsayer were elated to acquire Holism to complete this epic double a sided offering. Pumping sub bass pads, mid range dirt, and tribal dub manoeuvres govern this track. Robust enough to appeal to junglists and dubsteppers alike, Holism is a blazing wedge of outright aural wretchedness.

HBR002 – Optimum – Light Year / DS-10 – 12″ Vinyl
Hum + Buzz return with their first release of 2011 from label co-founder Optimum. After releasing his debut EP ‘Max Power’ for Planet Mu in 2010, contributing to the excellent Night Slugs Allstars Vol. 1 and Modeselektion Vol. 1 compilations, Optimum returns on Hum + Buzz with two sci-fi, dancefloor tracks. ‘Light Year’ is a 4X4 time travelling excursion through brass rhythms, dotted arpeggios and razor sharp percussion. Gangsta techno meets UK bass, a crossover that Optimum seems to be making his own. On the B side ‘DS10’, named after (and partly made on) the Korg software for the Nintendo DS, is a menacing march that progresses into the unknown. All superfluous elements are discarded; the track focuses squarely on the relentless bassline and unpredictable 808 drum pattern. With these minimal ingredients combined, DS10 is a certified sound system bomb!

OSMUK012 – DJ Madd – Pitch Black / New Reality – 12″ Vinyl
DJ Madd has been killing it recently. It’s another knee-slapping combination drenched in powerful vibes and both tunes are nasty, guttural affairs sure to make your eyeballs rattle. The sound of the release as whole is a little reminiscent of Distance, with crunchy basslines rasping and snarling like enraged wolves savaging a couple of fwuffy wittle bunnies. Thankfully, I love both Distance and bloody carnage, so this is a cracker. words by http://www.boxmusique.com/dj-madd-pitch-black-new-reality-osmuk012

TEC048 – Pinch & Loefah / Pinch & Roska – Broken / Paranormal Activity – 12″ Vinyl
With only one collaboration (alongside fellow DMZ stalwart SGT Pokes under the name ASBO, also for Tectonic) seeing light of day in the last three and a half years, it really has been a long time since dubstep pioneer and producer extraordinaire Loefah ventured out on wax. Responsible for originating the half-step beat in dubstep that came to dominate so much of the scene – with groundbreaking early titles such as ‘Horror Show’, ‘System’ and ‘Ruffige’ – Loefah’s beats always had huge impact on the dancefloor as well as in the studios of other beat-makers, caught by the power of his sound. More recently he’s become predominately focused on his genre challenging DJ sets as well as running his hugely successful Swamp 81 imprint, so this rare studio excursion with Tectonic label boss Pinch is a treat for all to behold. ’Broken’ starts with a single delaying hat splash as swirling white noise rises from beneath with gale force strength. This relatively gentle moment is soon disturbed by the menacing sound of a tearing bass hit – a twisted sound layered in weighted sub power. Tense pads with distorted edges add to the build before everything pulls out to silence allowing a perfectly timed drop. In comes the full weight of bass as a pounding 808-style rhythm drops – complete with head cracking snares and swung hats – as the main bass sound punches through, ‘Broken’ embarks on a master class in minimal effectiveness. An unmissable collaborative effort between two studio heavyweights, and just how dubstep is meant to sound. Flip for an equally exciting joint effort from Pinch and rising UK Funky and Rinse FM star Roska. Nomi-nated by DJ Mag for the prized title of Producer Of The Year in 2010, Roska is known more for his 130bpm funky productions but this collaboration takes the tempo up to 140bpm for an exercise in rhyth-mical maximality – a frantic but rolling conga workout session. Meticulous drum programming is layered with dark reverbed sonics, spooky pads and a gut wrenching sub bass line guaranteed to cause stomach upset on the right systems. ‘Paranormal Activity’ will summon the ancient spirits so be careful where you drop it. All told, this plate is an essential purchase for true fans of the original dubstep vibe.

TEC049 – Addison Groove – This Is It / Make Um Bounce – 12″ Vinyl
Massive new Tectonic 12″ from man of the moment – Bristol’s very own Addison Groove. Tony Williams aka Addison Groove appeared last year with the anthem ‘Foot Crab’ on Loefah’s impeccable Swamp 81 imprint. Anyone who has been to a dubstep dance in the last year will have likely heard the original or one of many VIP mixes and re-edits of this infectious monster of a tune – or at least seen it listed on count-less end of year ‘best of’ lists and DJ charts more recently. Taking in elements of the Chicago Juke/Footwork scene and bringing in a knowledge of bass heavy dub-step production (as acquired during his former incarnation as Headhunter), Addison Groove has already made a huge, rippling impression on dance music across the world. The world has been holding tight for more Addison Groove ever since, and hot on the tails of a recent fol-low up on Swamp 81 is this excellent 12″ for Tectonic, featuring some of his best work yet. ‘This Is It’ is a bubbly 138bpm dance floor banger, laden with pounding sub-heavy 808 kicks and soul-scraping claps, blending bass science with original Chicago attitude in a way that only Addison Groove can do. The whole rhythm is lifted by rave-flavoured bleeps and blips chiming out in a melodic progression as vocal samples sound out on top. Absolutely enormous tune! Flip for the slower tempo, yet just as danceable ‘Make Um Bounce’. Hitting in at 133bpm, this 4/4 rhythm is getting hammered by everyone from Jackmaster to James Zabeila and as soon as you hear the first kick drum hit, you’ll know why! Very aptly titled, this tune WILL make you bounce! Bass heavy and full of booty bouncing badness!

ZIQ293 – Chrissy Murderbot – Bussin Down EP – 12″ Vinyl
‘Bussin Down’ is the first Planet Mu single from Chrissy Murderbot, who comes with a style inspired by his chosen city of Chicago’s Juke and Footwork scenes. He playfully mixes in elements of other styles of music he loves, such as R’n'B and Dancehall, to create lively mutations with a warm hearted mass appeal that comfortably straddles genres. ’Bussin Down’ features Chicago footwork supremo DJ Spinn over some tasty footwork tracks featuring Spinn’s instructional lyrics, over some high speed jazz funk and cracking claps and klaviers. Next track ‘Braaain’ is a unique amalgam of footwork with the classic early digital sleng teng bassline. The blend works fantastically, as Chrissy slides the originals vocal in and out of the mix in a dub style. On the B-side Atki2 takes album track ‘The Vibe Is So Right’ featuring vocals from MC Zulu and runs it through a lush treatment that mixes Detroit washes with tight, laidback, rolling funky house drums, to instant classic effect. On B2, Chicago footwork pioneers DJs Rashad and Spinn send the originals vocal into a whirl of complex delays and layered loops over cold drums and hard techno stabs. Just the faintest taste of what is In store on The M-Bot’s incredible ‘Women’s Studies’ album due soon on Planet Mu.

BR006 – Swindle – Mood Swings EP – 12″ Vinyl
Croydon’s own Swindle gets 2011 off to a great start with his first release on the grime label of the mo-ment, Butterz. The funk-obsessed producer delivers an exercise in dark half-step on the title tune ‘Mood Swings’ with all the funky riffs and synths that fans of ‘Airmiles’ have grown to love since he debuted with that track on Planet Mu. ’Bebop’ is a more light-hearted affair with chopped-up vocoder vocal samples coupled with subtle piano keys fading in and out between the up-tempo beat pattern. ’Trending Topic’ is one for lovers of Starkey and Terror Danjah alike, as it combines the organic energy of grime with the quirkiness of Swindle’s funk influenced synth patterns. Having already gained support from Starkey, Alexander Nut, Scratcha DVA and DJ Q, the ‘Mood Swings EP’ is shaping up to be yet another instant classic from Swindle and the Butterz label.

HDR003 – P-Jam – Anger Management EP – 12″ Vinyl
Grime has been clawing its way back to the centre of underground UK music in a big way recently, riding a new wave of credibility in futurist iterations from Terror Danjah, Hyperdub, and Butterz. But with the rising profile of figures like Slackk and the eski-aping sound of Becoming Real and sometimes Jam City, there’s been a pseudo-lionization and a growing mythology surrounding classic grime. Honestly, it’s been a long time coming; the music is legendary for a reason. Terror Danjah’s new(ish) Hardrive label takes a bold step in 2011 with a sharp look back-ward, and in typically cyclical fashion it feels perfectly now. Dating all the way back to 2004, P Jam’s ‘Anger Management’ is a minimal monster of a tune, slamming with the same slurred and blurred percussive elements of Wiley’s essential ‘Ice Rink’. But it’s the oddly distant, echoed vo-cal grunts and dirty (grimy?) morphing bassline that really push it into the ‘classic’ category. ‘Anger Management’ simply sounds rough, dirty, and raw, like it could barely be rendered by whatever archaic software produced those sounds. ‘Samba’ is from around the same time, and it shares in the same cheap, dulled aesthetic, built out of synth guitar and screeching tires, heavy on the bongos to boot. But you can’t accuse Terror of living in the past, as he rounds out his label’s third release with a brand new track from the veteran producer. Comparatively lush, ‘Sorefoot’ is heavy on the synth sounds, the careful percussion relegated to nudging the track along instead of dominating. It’s fascinating to hear P Jam dress up his classic-leaning sound in shiny new clothes, and heartening that even after all these years he’s evidently still going strong. Even as grime gathers together a promising wave of new producers, there’s life left in its progenitors, and Hardrive

City Limits Vol 1.6-1.8 completes a hat trick of releases from Silkie on DEEP MEDi Musik and last before his highly anticipated and long overdue new album City Limits Vol. 2. This heavyweight four track EP sees Silkie deliver a diverse helping of his unique style. ‘It’s Late’ with it’s catchy vocal hook, driving drums and surging synth owes as much to Silkie’s early garage influences as it does to the sound of Detroit Techno, ‘Float’ and ‘Murky’ are all about the weighty Dub influenced bass lines and keys alongside the super deep melodies and groove, finally the bumpin’ ‘Techfunk’ with it’s piercing synth, frenetic drums and G-funk style bass rounds off the EP perfectly keeping you wanting more and hungry for the next installment. Radio Support: Benji B (Radio 1), DVA Scratcha (Rinse), Gilles Peterson (Radio 1), Mistajam (1Xtra & Radio 1), Sinden (Kiss FM), J 5ive (Antisocial) (Rinse). HENCH026 – Lost Ft. Beezy – Snake Eyes / Escape From The Womb – 12″ Vinyl
Lost has come a long way since he took the first steps on his journey into music. As a 12-year old, Lost found ‘Big Apple Records’ in Croydon and embarked upon becoming a DJ. Now a fully-fledged member of H.E.N.C.H, this prodigy has been responsible for some of the most sub shaking releases to have been let forth from the Bristol label’s catalogue to date. A: Snake Eyes (Ft. Beezy) – Lost teams up with Hench’s new signing Beezy. For those that know, you can bet that any track with Beezy’s name on is going to be sordidly sinister. And ‘Snake Eyes’ is no exception. The track commences with an industrial and hazardous sounding scene that’s soon met with Beezy’s catchy hook. Things are teed-up fittingly for a creeping baseline that weaves amongst the dripping backdrop. Before the low-end truly takes you somewhere else, Beezy rejoins with an ever-ominous lyrical gesture to seal the dread-inducing vibe that Lost has created with this charismatic production. AA: Escape from the Womb – In all of Lost’s productions, he’s enigmatic in creating a feeling with his tracks from the get-go. What seems like a calm and atmospheric intro quickly thrusts you toward something you’d be forgiven for not expecting. When that high-voltage bass rhythm gets your attention, sit back, you’re in for the ride. Metallic overtones and pulsating groove make ‘Escape from the Womb’ a genuinely progressive number. This was built to tear dance floors to the ground and has already been doing some serious damage.

Hessle Audio present “116 & Rising” LP

Hessle Audio present “116 & Rising” LP

Posted 18 April 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Curated by the imprint’s three co-founders – Ben UFO, Pangaea and Pearson Sound (AKA Ramadanman) – the CD version is comprised of 12 brand new tracks tracks, with contributions from every single producer who’s previously released a 12″ on Hessle, plus a couple of guests, and a second disc collecting previously released highlights from the catalogue.

That means fresh heat not just from Pangaea and Pearson Sound but also Blawan, Joe, Elgato, Untold, Cosmin TRG, Peverelist, James Blake and Addison Groove, and a couple of unexpected treats – such as D1‘s never-before-released archive cut ‘Subzero’ and a killer from the hitherto little-known Randomer. Most of the tracks on Disc 2 are modern dancefloor classics, and hardly require any introduction – among them Martyn’s eerily suspended, deeply affecting remix of TRG’s ‘Broken Heart’, Untold’s none-more-livewire ‘I Can’t Stop This Feeling’, Pangaea’s ‘Why’ and James Blake’s ‘Buzzard & Kestrel’ (a track he’s arguably yet to better).

The new tracks will constitue the vinyl edition of 116 & Rising, which is a 12″ triple-pack; the striking artwork on both CD and vinyl editions is by Will Bankhead. Oh, and there’ll be a launch party for the album at London’s XOYO club on Friday 13 May.

New D&B CD

SOULR050 – Marcus Intalex – 21 – CD x 2
The album features all colours and textures of the electronic sphere, from the bright, florescent metallics of ‘Celestial Navigation’ (feat S.P.Y.) through to the darker tinges of the sharp‐edged, sparse landscape of ‘Hot Hands.’ His D&B mastery is constant throughout on ‘Make A Raise’ (with the vocals of reggae legend Ras Tweed), D&B gets a slightly more menacing dub makeover, while ‘Paulista’ holds the layered, tightly produced drum programming that Intalex is known for, and ‘Meltdown’ is a typically immaculate, deep roller that stems from collaborating with Calibre. Yet elegant productions like ‘Dusk’ show his ability to create spacious downtempo sound worlds. The acid ‐drenched ‘TB or Not TB’ is filled with analogue 303 stabs that give a nod back to his first love: the early sounds of Chicago and Detroit in the late 80s. The album shifts between moods and character with each distinctive track, especially on his collaborations with equally charisma producers like the bright, uplifting zig zags of ‘Strangeways’ with Zed Bias, or the full sheets of bass on his moody collaboration with Nonplus+ vocalist Riya, ‘Regrets.’ The album’s standout is the beautifully emotive ‘Climbing Up The Walls, which features the vocals of Drum & Bass producer Danny Fierce, and stands as a breathtaking, adventurous take on Radiohead. These tracks are currently being championed by the main beat seekers of the global bass music, such as Radio 1′s Fabio & Grooverider, & Benji B, plus DJ’s Alexander Nut, Ben UFO, Loefah, Martyn, Scuba, Oneman and 2562.

SOMCD002 – State of Mind – Nil by Ear – CD
Nil by Ear is Sate of Mind’s third studio album, the first two being Take Control (Uprising) & Faster than Light (SOM). This album represents the peak so far of the lads technical skills, its carefully produced from start to finish. Tracks are frequently tied together, and a lot of thought has gone into the flow of the album. This is one that can be listened too from beginning to end, as opposed to a collection of singles. However that doesn’t mean that State of Mind have forgotten about the 3am raver. Almost all of the tracks have all been smashing it up world wide over the last 6 months in their own right. Collaboration wise, the album features several of NZ’s most talented vocalists including Shapeshifter’s P.Digsss, Thomas Oliver, Sacha Vee, Mc Woody & PNC, as well as American singer 3pm. The only production collaborators are Nymfo and DNME. Several other collaborations were planned for the LP, but in the end were unable to fit.  These will be released as bonus tracks. There will be strictly limited number of CD/EP shrink-wrap bundles, and a follow up EP including some remixes and some more album cuts. Check out youtube.com/stateofmindnz for videos, trailers, and generally interesting stuff.

DETAIL005 – Lynx & Hellrazor / Lynx Ft. Spikey Tee – Dirty Red / 5am Soul City – 12″ Vinyl
Detail 005 is the next single from label boss Lynx. Dirty Red is a bit of a monster and has been getting huge support from Marky, Marcus Intalex, Nu:Tone Bailey and Shy FX. The intro builds with sci fi strings that progress like a train hurtling down the tracks out of control. It reaches a crescendo with the sound of squealing brakes and drops into a menacing talk box bassline and Lynx’s sharp 2 step beats. 5.a.m Soul City is a collaboration between Lynx and London born, Sydney based soul vocalist, Spikey Tee. The track has the vibe of walking through the backstreets of a city in the early hours of the morning. Subdued chords, scattered pianos and rustles of the streets and distant cars litter this liquid vocal track.

DIS043 – Cern & Dabs / Dabs & Safire – Oh The Horror / Back & Forth – 12″ Vinyl
Dispatch are chuffed to present a truly international 12″ with 3 producers cross-collaborating worldwide to present this powerful bass heavy release. We start on the A-side with arguably New Zealand’s finest export Cern collaborating with wonder kid Dabs hailing from Italy, they both provide some real dance floor power in the form of “Oh the Horror”. Dabs then works his way back over to the other side of the globe Australia bound to work alongside rising talent Safire! They both bring us a modern day roll-out “Back and Forth” on the flip… To make this story even more hard to explain the 2 tracks ended up on a UK based label however as far as we saw it the instant we heard these 2 tracks we had to make sure Dispatch would become their home. Huge support from the likes of Rockwell (both tracks featured on Shogun Ministry radio show), AI, Ant TC1, Spectrasoul (Shogun Ministry radio show), Dose, Octane & DLR, Survival, BTK, Doc Scott, Kasra, Judda, Nymfo, Teebee and more.

DISLPLTD001 – Skeptical & MC Fokus / Ant TC1 – Structure / Mode Destruction – 10″ Vinyl
The A side of this release features a track from the CD & MP3 release of the Dispatch ‘Transit One’ album – Skeptical & MC Fokus’s “Structure”; this is a track we received many emails and messages from quite simply asking “why is this not on vinyl” (along with other album tracks being referenced that did not appear as part of the vinyl package), the volume of differing requests led us to decide quite simply to put it to the vote and along with some help from K-Mag, Soundcloud and a mass of public votes here is the winning result pressed on to the a-side of this limited 10″ vinyl. On the flip we’ve got something completely fresh from label man Ant TC1 in the shape of the track “Mode Destruction” which is best explained as minimal but devastating when played loud! Enjoy.

New Bass Music CD

NONPLUSCD002 – LOL – Me Me – CD
LOL is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

New Bass Music releases

PPRO14VSY – Photek – 101 (Boddika Remix) / This City – 12″ Vinyl
Full colour sleeve pressed on 180 gram Vinyl. Regarded by many as the finest electronic producer of his generation, the mysterious LA-based Photek enjoyed considerable success throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with his own mutant breed of jungle and drum’n’bass. After a four-year hiatus from releasing music (and just over ten years since his last LP ‘Solaris’), the legendary Photek is back with a new sound and brand new 4-track EP – an occasion definitely worth the wait. Never one to stand still, Photek’s enviable reputation has been built not just on his ability to inspire both his fans and peers over the years through his productions but also through his knack of reinventing his sound time and time again. With his early work (under a variety of aliases) proving hugely popular in clubs, it wasn’t until ’97 when he released his now-classic debut album ‘Modus Operandi’ that he truly arrived, defying both his existing fan base and the Jungle scene as he pioneered a new alternative to the big room rollers that defined the era at that time. Three years later he surprised again, embracing Chicago acid-house and techno for his second artist album ‘Solaris’ in 2000, working with the brilliant Robert Owens on the classic single ‘Mine To Give’. Further EP’s followed after the turn of the millennium, as well as a number of film score credits (including The Matrix), but in 2011 he has once again shifted the gears, re-inspired by UK bass music and the current crop of young producers – Photek has a new sound to share with the world. Multiple Radio Plays by: Benji B, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam, Nick Grimshaw, Greenmoney, Jon Kennedy.

3024011 – Julio Bashmore – Batty Knee Dance / Ribble To Amazon – 12″ Vinyl
Two brand new tracks from Bristol’s emergent House prodigy. Batty Knee Dance brings ultra syncopated 808′s, neurotic synths and a mournful vocal refrain together in a tightly packaged low drag configuration. Ribble To Amazon maintains the levels of 808 astro physics but heads for the great outdoors with subtly staggered pads and an impossibly delicate Lepidopteran melody basking in a 16:9 sunset. Exclusive to the digital Grand National winds down with wistful synth trumpets and a rhythmic strut perfectly aligned with the greatest roller disco ever.

DP051 – Antiserum – Zephyr / Purple & Gold – 12″ Vinyl
San Francisco-based producer Antiserum steps up for Dub Police with two unique collaborations, featuring local producers Ill-Esha and 12th Planet respectively. His music is a masterfully crafted fusion of influences that results in a sound entirely his own, balancing light against dark and colour against pure bass pressure. Showcasing a deft musicality as well as an unrivalled talent for system shaking productions, Antiserum is taking the scene by storm. Releases on Narco.Hz, S.C.U.M and Argon amongst others have already propelled him to the forefront of the rapidly growing American dubstep scene, with plenty more still to come. On the A side, he is joined by Ill-Esha on ‘Zephyr’, a sick g-funk inflected roller. Skittering hi-hats and tough drums lay the foundations on this one, with the deep, smooth bass sweeping underneath. The vibrant synths weave in and out of each other with ease, swimming around the mix and swelling expansively through the speakers. On the flip he teams up with 12th Planet on the massive ‘Purple & Gold’. The g-funk influences continue to flow through this track, pinned down by a hard bassline and taut drums. The shimmering synths sliding over the top of the percussion and off into the atmosphere give the track an epic stop-in-your-tracks effect.

CIV019 – Om Unit – The Timps EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following his prized Joker rework, his inclusion on the hefty Fabric-curated ‘Elevator Music’ comp, his dope 7″ for the All City crew, and Corridor EP on Plastician’s Terrorhythm imprint – not to mention a slew of remixes – Om Unit joins the Civil Music stable alongside Starkey, Reso, dÉbruit, Drums of Death and Darling Farah. And yet again we see him pushing his sonic manifesto ever further. With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP. The Timps is Real Electro. Faceless, percussive, underground with a sci-fi feel. Dark, futuristic and dancefloor-oriented, punctuated with elements of 80’s Detroit Techno. Om Unit has blasted his sound into deep space, adding eerie electronic futurism to his niche blend of slow boogie, house, techno and hip-hop beats with those classic analogue synth lines. It nods to both the ever exciting and forever morphing instrumental beat scene and to the heavy flow of early pioneering Detroit techno via UR and the likes of Drexciya/Aux 88. The Timps sees Om Unit interfacing funk and futurism. Analogue bass lines are sequenced, arpeggiated and twisted to devastating effect. Synthetic riffs and atonal sound effects with heavy reverbs, delays and phasers drift along with eerie synthetic strings emphasizing the retro futuristic themes of the music. Remixes come from Frite Nites’ US beat maker and a one-to-watch in 2011, Salva, and Wagon Repair’s Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson who, along with brother, Matthew, is part of North American Techno’s first family. Salva’s rework of Prawn Cocktail pulses and throbs towards its intergalactic destination, with beats that speed along with accelerating urgency. Hrdvsion on the other hand takes The Timps and disconnects completely to float off alone into deep space with his epic, eerie and atomspheric reworking. This is Electro. Real Electro. Moody, minimal and 25 years on.

Gatekeeper (A.k.A William Scott Cree) has been a fundamental part of the dubstep scene ever since it all began many years ago. Gatekeeper describes his sound to be somewhere between dubstep and grime but still keeping it within the ‘Bristol sound’ and that’s exactly what he has achieved with both these massive releases. ‘Raw tones’ consists of unique sounding drums, dark bass lines and moody atmospheres, where as ‘Ignite’ boasts the classic gatekeeper sound and vocals from the infamous ‘Dread Mc’ and local hero ‘Grillza’. KOKESHI005 – Irrelevant ft. Brad Sucks – Better Off In Me (Original / Calibre Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Limted white Vinyl pressing. Featured on the Kokeshi ((pod)) Kasts, Irrelevant’s ‘Better Off in Me’ has been one of the most asked about tracks featured on the label’s podcast series. A futuristic garage / dubstep / electronica /whatever tune with potential mainstream crossover, this is just a sample of what’s to come from Irrelevant’s debut LP coming out later this year. When thinking who best to remix a tune of this potential, Kokeshi thought only the king of melancholia himself, Calibre could suit such a touching track. The brief for Calibre was only to keep it at a similar BPM..and the result is a tune unlike anything Calibre has done before..with the 2-step Garage feel to it, its sure to be a hit on both the Radio and the Club circuit. BRK018 – Aleks Zen – High Life / Pimp Shoes – 12″ Vinyl
For Berkane Sol 18 we present the vinyl debut of the hugely talented Aleks Zen. He calls his outfit ‘Neon Bounty’ and its easy to hear why. His brightly coloured music is like the soundtrack to a thrill seekers ride through the downtown areas of a tropical metropolis – sensuous but edgy, and properly booming on the right kind of car stereo. His riddims are propulsive and a joy to dance to, bringing together the best aspects of both house and dubstep. Melodically these tunes feel like the emotions of classic West Coast g-funk filtered through the mongrel mindset of the current UK bass music scene. Or as Aleks puts it himself – “I’ve been on hip-hop, grime, house and dubstep, now I’m trying to to create my own musical paradigm that still relates to people’s earthly emotions”. Pimp Shoes is maybe the best example of this – sometimes it feels just like an upbeat oldskool computer game theme, but then it evolves through some highly accomplished and unexpected key changes that put it in a whole new category.

CHST011 – Distance – Falling Ft. Alys Be – 12″ Vinyl
Chestplate a label set up with the intention of showcasing the freshest of Distance’s own productions which have been destroying dances and flooring radio listeners ever since. After just a handful of releases it is already established as one of the increasingly few, ‘buy-on-sight’ dubstep labels. Highlights of his production repertoire include ‘V’; a track as heavy as 100 ten tonne trucks that pounds and stomps, crunches and growls. Now for number 11 another Distance classic, ‘Feel Me’, oozes something far less overtly aggressive; all motorik hypnotik groove and ring modulated synth squeel. For the heads don’t sleep on the evil Malice on the flip. Distance’s studio has spawned multiple stone cold killers over a range of styles but all uniquely Distance, highlighting why his new releases are some of the most highly anticipated in the scene.

New D&B Releases

OK022 – Meth & 2Shy – Treatment EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Meth has been working hard from his base in the South of the UK and has been creating a monster to unleash for Offkey Music. His initial solo releases for Offkey brought much attention and dance floor destruction. Quickly people realised that Meth was a force not to be underestimated. This is first full length project and Offkey are very happy to be releasing it. Meth has gathered a stellar cast for The Treatment EP – and that cast extends to 2shy, Manifest & Zo. Let us get treated. a) Meth & 2Shy (feat. Zo) – Front-line 2Shy lays down a vocal that leaves no confusion as to his intent, Meth lays down a killer kick snare and bass combo that brings the dance floor pain like only he knows how. The mysterious Zo slides onto the rhythm and underpins 2Shy’s presence on the track with her spoken word style, putting emphasis on the main hook effortlessly. Bongos bring up the pace on the chorus and before you know it your nodding your head and singing along to the ‘Front-line’. b) Meth, Manifest & 2Shy - RockForte Another artist is introduced to the fold is B-Boy Aficionado Manifest, south London authority on all things hip hop, the friendship with 2Shy has developed over years and now they feature on the knock bass killer ‘Rockforte’. A lilting dub vocal hangs over the breakdown signalling to a drop that just demands to be heard. A mid set roller that features enough edits and twists to keep the floor moving and keeps those gun fingers in the air. Mid bass growls all over the beat encouraging that all important screw face. All together now…. “Too heavyweight, too heavyweight” c) Meth & 2Shy – Not the one This is TRADEMARK 2shy, lets not get it twisted- infact there is no way you could “The bass drops, the place erupts, the crowd shouts FUCK OFF”.  When 2shy gets on a track- this is what you want. Aggravated, unshakeable and uncompromising. and again- just incase you wondered- “FUCK OFF”. Meth and 2shy show again that this may well be an ongoing collaboration- this EP is like a fist to the face, and ‘Not the one’ is the middle finger of said fist. d) Meth – Snake Eyes Meth closes proceedings with menacing Snake Eyes, A perfect title for the sinister track that whips midrange and suffocates you with low end. High hats and cymbals give movement to the drums and add a body move factor that will have the dance floor in eyes down, shock out mode no doubt!

GEN175005 – Switch Technique – Did / Exo – 12″ Vinyl
Switch Technique is the first artist to get a solo release on The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. So, what does this mean? It means that he has pulled off that which only very few can manage: he mixed hardcore kickdrums and drum & bass snares into what has become known as crossbreed.. and he made it sound good. DID is a deep dive into the mind of a psychopath, continuously hammered by gutwrenching kickdrum one hundred and seventy-five times per minute. EXO on the flip strips the crossbreed sound down to its bare exoskeleton. Go on, put on the exoskeleton and see for yourself!

RDR002 – Shameboy / Buscemi – Strobot – NETSKY rmx / Seaside – KG rmx – 12″ Vinyl
Murdock’s Radar Records launches an entirely new project, backed by some of the biggest names in drum&bass. Remixing a gang of classic Belgian non-dnb tracks by the likes of T99, Sound of Stereo, The Subs, Outlander and many more, they kick off the series with massive drum&bass reworks by none other than Netsky and KG. Drum & Bass’ new poster boy / boy wonder Netsky steps to the plate with the awesomeness that is his version of Shameboy’s classic electro banger ‘Strobot’, which was the first tune in his BBC Radio1 Essential Mix and has had a lot of exposure worldwide, as his Mix was voted 3rd best Essential Mix of the year 2010! The track has had spins by Andy C, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked and many more. KG ripped up Buscemi’s laidback house classic ‘Seaside’ and turned it into a dancefloor stomper. Opening with funky licks and classic breaks, he quickly rolls into a big jump-up monster, while still adding some vocals and rhodes piano for good measure. This one is being caned by Bassline Smith, Hamilton and Zen, to name just a few. Next up in the Radar Remixes series are contributions by Nymfo, Blame, Crystal Clear, Break, Marky & SPY and many more, so keep your eyes and ears pealed!

New D&B Promos

NOMIC006 – ASC – Starkwood / Reform – 12″ Vinyl
How and why these two tracks got pushed so far back in the autonomic release schedule is anyones guess. These two cuts are arguably ASC’s biggest to date (perhaps with the exception of ‘The Touch’), and two tracks that go a long way in defining the early sound of the autonomic movement. Finally they are going to see the light of day however, news that is sure to satisfy the baying hoards of hungry autonomic devotees that have waited so long and so patiently for their release. Starkwood is about dancefloor as Autonomic has ever gotten and probably will ever get – the pounding kick drum, coupled with the rhytmical, shuffling tribal percussion is infectious and guaranteed to get heads nodding and bodies moving. Reform is on a totally different vibe altogether with its breathy vocal snippets and detroit-ish synths giving it a silky, sultry feel.

Cern describes “Terminus” as “an album that takes its roots from Techstep and funk driven D&B,” going on to say “the album reflects the inspiration gained from his long standing admiration for producers like Ed Rush & Optical, Matrix, Konflict and Source Direct”, incorporating the sound they represented at a time, in his opinion, when Drum & Bass was “at its peak”

Zero Method is up for some rolling action with their tunes Atomizer & Marco Polo. Atomizer keeps it steady with perfectly pinpointed hi hats and drums, while the fierce bass line corrodes the foundations. This one packs a giant punch when executed properly, a serious tune for the techy minded people Next up is Marco Polo. This one will take you into the uncharted realms of neuro tech, no cheesy loudness business just straight up drums & basses. A chest rattler like nothing you ever heard before. SUBTLE015 – Equinox – Meecha – 12″ Vinyl
Marlon Sterling aka Equinox cements his reputation as one of the D&B scenes most versatile, single-minded and dextrous beat manipulators on his latest in a long catalogue of brain-bending releases. The incendiary opener to a now infamous Equinox & Bailey set at Technicality in 2003 – “Meecha” finally sees the light of day. Originally completed in 1996 on an Amiga computer, the tune has lost none of its appeal 15 years on and it’s all the better for the audible crunch on the amen beats. This is one of the very best tunes from Equinoxs unreleased DAT library, and that’s saying something !! “So many people out here who make different styles of music you know – this music is something that they feel”. The repeated mantra at the opening of the flip side prepares you for an altogether different experience to what went before. Made in 2009 but with a definite nod to the oldskool style, “Your Love’s So Cold” is poignant, heartfelt D&B at its very best. The arrangement deftly builds to a beautiful swell of echoed vocals, icey-atmospherics and rolling beats and bass. Just like the A Side, this one is certain to defy fashions and trends and will be just as moving in 2024.

LS010 – Nphonix – Third Eye / False Flag – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Nphonix is celebrated as a paragon of stylistic diversity, constant progression and engineering craftsmanship amongst producers and listeners alike, with a sound and discography spanning everything from drum ‘n bass to hard techno. His latest release on the prestigious Lost Soul imprint is no exception to this standard. The A-side, ‘Third Eye’, descends like the bellow of some unfathomable machine coming to life, as frenetic techno stabs ride a ferocious shockwave of bass driven by bristling percussion. The flip, ‘False Flag,’ beckons with signature lushness and beautiful harmonies before propelling the listener back into a maelstrom of speaker destroying furor, with a stunning second drop sure to blow minds and rattle ribcages. Both pieces are tied together with the gritty yet crystalline production quality fans have come to expect from this stalwart innovator. This record is a testament to an artist’s uncompromising vision and a label’s reputation for impeccable taste.

DP049 – KGB – Ghetto Blasta 2010 / Hands Up – 12″ Vinyl
Estonian duo KGB step up for their debut release on Dub Police and they certainly aren’t pulling any punches. The production partnership hit you with two cuts of pure dance floor energy and impact that display their versatility and uncanny knowledge of how to get a crowd going. If you don’t know about KGB, you better get to know, as they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the rising stars in underground dance music. With plenty of tricks up their sleeves, there will be no stopping them in 2011! ‘Ghetto Blaster 2010’ draws upon different elements of underground bass music and melds them together in to something entirely unique and undeniably infectious. Taking the growling midrange bass-weight of dubstep and wiring it to a militant UK Funky drum march, KGB give the track an unstoppable momentum and punishing impact that is impossible to fight against – With an artillery that includes fire like this, it is no wonder they are quickly paving their path to the top. On the flipside, KGB deliver something very different. Pinned down by the tough half-step drum pattern, ‘Hands Up’ is all about the maniacal intertwining bass lines. When this track drops there is no denying its fierce, in-your-face power.

LIME004 – Jade & Matt-U – Echoes – 12″ Vinyl
Lime Dubz keep on cracking with another too hot to handle release.. The long time duo Jade & Matt-U are reunited once again but not for getting back to their dnb roots. No Jade teams up with Matt-U for some highly technical Dubstep sounds.. Grindhouse on Jade’s Venom LP was just a taster of what was to come.. With Grindhouse still freshly engraved into our memories it’s time to unleash it on vinyl.. But now with 2 brand spanking new heavyweights on there.. Echoes is a sinister roller that’s all over the place bouncing left right up and down there’s no defending against this monster track.. Instead of going all tear out they crossover to a more medi hybrid sound that will suit well with Dubsteppers of all ages.. The last new track on the 12 is Pump. You guys are thinking it.. and we can confirm.. Yes this is a bass line monster if there ever was one. Grab all of your PA’s boys and girls and turn up the volume to max cause its only happening when your chest starts rattlin..

CIV017 – Reso – Valken EP / War Machine – 12″ Vinyl
Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow. Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy. Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.

NONPLUS011 – Lowtec – Wonderkidd / Looser – 12″ Vinyl
The ball is certainly rolling in 2011 and next up is a treat from Germanys Lowtec. Founder of highly respected label Workshop he makes his UK label debut on Nonplus Records with two fresh cuts of analogue goodness. a) Lowtec ‘Wonderkidd’ ‘Wonderkidd’ greets us with a vocal sample that morphs keys with a low-fi piano chord before the discordant groove of the main riff comes into effect. Analogue synths dance around the deep chord groove with early detroitisms flexing between a repeating bleeped out pattern. Hypnotic key stabs sink you deeper into the tune that shows us why Lowtec is one of Berlin’s top underground button pushers. aa) Lowtec ‘Looser’ The warm hiss of anaolgue beats starts off the excellent AA tune ‘Looser’. Dabs of a.m radio vocals progress the tune amongst a myriad of discreet electronic bleeps that escalate and scatter around the rhythm. Coarsely sampled ‘Shakir-like’ string chords provide the main sequence to set off this excellent tune. One for the deeper heads out there.

Having been perfecting his production skills for the last 10 years, Mrk 1 is no newcomer to the world of bass-led music. A member of Manchester’s infamous ‘Virus Syndicate’, he’s become internationally recognised as a huge dubstep talent. So when HENCH got the opportunity, they jumped at the chance to sign two typically down-right dark and dirty numbers from the man like Mrk 1… A. DIRTY DUBSTEP MUSIC ‘I want girls, drink, drugs and music’ aren’t the type of lyrics you’re going to find on a Cliff Richard record. And this track is about as far away as you can get from that! Get ready for a relentlessly switching bass rhythm that takes you every which way direction. The vibe on this production is one of darkest dread and fits perfectly at home in a dark & dingy club at some ungodly hour of the morning. Mrk 1 has carefully crafted space around the bass-riff to make sure that nothing takes away from it hitting you where it hurts. AA. SHOUT Mrk 1 guides us in with an innocent facade; a playful vocal coupled with a light-tempoed high hat. But as things draw nearer to the drop the creeping low-end in the background makes it clear that other intentions are in mind. When that twisted bassline drops ‘Shout’ takes on a far more forbidding atmosphere. Mrk 1 has created something that bass-heads have been swinging from the rafters for every time, screaming for the rewind. Take heed of our words when we tell you that ‘Shout’ is going to cause damage!

RS1102 – Blawan – Bohla EP – 12″ Vinyl
R&S welcome another newcomer to the family. With only one release behind him on Hessle Audio and a wicked remix for Warp (The Hundred In The Hands) Blawan finds his new tracks in demand from the likes of James Blake, Jackmaster, Untold, Ben UFO, Ramadanman and Pariah. The title track is already creating a bit of a stir from its inclusion in a few high profile dj sets, but all three tracks raise the game for this young producer. The whole ep is filled with an honest, infectious energy, just like his dj sets. You can’t pigeonhole this as ‘post’ anything, its pure, stripped down, club music. Sometimes drums, bass and acid is all you need.

OTE014 – Indigo – Zero Point E.P. – 12″ Vinyl x 2
On the Edge are back with a new EP from Indigo! He first made his debut for On the Edge early 2009 with a collaboration with Synkro called “Alabama” and “Turning”. Then Indigo went on to produce 2 solo singles for On the Edge 8 and 9 that I would describe as true masterpieces. Dubby, Techno, industrial and gritty to the core! If you haven’t checked any of those releases out, then I would say “Not Alone”, “Home” and “Cosmos” are all well worth a listen. He is one of the most talented producers I have ever heard and extremely diverse in production styles. He never sticks to formulas and his musical knowledge and passion for diversity really shines though in his music. “Zero point” is a mix of wonderfully produced soundscapes that show us what Indigo is all about. DJ Support: Scuba, Russell Deeks , D Bridge , Reso , Spam Chop, DFRNT, Rob Booth Walsh, Dj Rum Distal, Truth.

SMOKE013 – Lewis B – Dark Coulds – 12″ Vinyl
If you’re into a bit of Dubstep with a Jazzy twist, then I’m sure Lewis B is a name that you’re very familiar with. It’s a style of Dubstep that is really taking shape and Lewis is riding that ever increasing moment that surrounds this beautiful sound. Lewis has such a deep knowledge of Jazz, ranging from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery, all the way to the more modern twist on Jazz, like Jazzanova and Quantic. “Dark Clouds” screams out Lewis B and reminds me a little of “Pinball”, but in so many ways extremely different and unique. Then we have Synkro on the remix duties, but a first for Smokin Sessions, it’s a D+B remix!!!! The sound seems to amalgamate genres where BPM are merely a speed, but has a definite distinct flavor. I think its such a refreshing sound and love the minimal deepness that the genre brings to electronic music. DJ Support: D Bridge, LTJ Bukem, DFRNT, Dj Rum Reso Loxy, Alexander Nut, 16bit, Pathaan, Tayo, Kissy Sell out, Shimon, Distal, Rob Booth, Freq Nasty, DJ Flight, Nerm (BBC Radio 1) and Akira Kiteshi!

SR013 – JFB ft. Christina Nicola – Rise / Ruffneck Rmx – 12″ Vinyl
JFB, the Brighton-based master turntablist, DMC champion and coordinator (alongside Beardyman) of the legendary Battlejam events returns to Sludge Records with yet another speaker-bustin’ musical onslaught. If you liked Duckjam and his previous collaborations with Ed Solo then this release of full-on phat beats and dub bass pressure will blow your minds, and your eardrums. Main cut ‘Rise’ teases you in with atmospheric tones and eerie pads before the angelic voice of Christina Nicola takes you into a dreamy state of euphoria, only for a big beefy knee-trembling bassline to come crashing in and drag you kicking and screaming into hedonistic oblivion. This is one of those tracks that are designed for those special 4am moments that make you hug speakers and pull bassfaces so intense you’ll end up chewing off your own eyebrows. On the flip is something a bit special for all the skanking soldiers. ‘Ruffneck’ is a track by Elijah MC, a street entertainer from the south of England who uses his beatboxing skills and vocal looping tools to create dub-influenced songs that range from trip hop through to drum ‘n’ bass. The track here is a firing ragga-flavoured dubstep remix from our man JFB and it is H.E.A.V.Y. Showing off his highly accomplished production skills from start to finish, the skippy beats, earthquake-inducing subs and roots-style vocals are perfectly combined to make this one a dead cert for sheer dancefloor devastation, and prove once again why he’s one of the most sought after and entertaining artists on the scene.

Instra:mental “Resolution 653″ LP [Nonplus Records]

Posted 21 February 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Instra:mental have completed their debut album and there’s no better home for it than their own firmly established label Nonplus+. Having made a name for themselves over the last few years as avant-garde, forward thinking producers who set trends instead of following, they lay down a full length album showcasing where their productions are at now rather than being a summary of where they’ve come from.

First off we get a taste of the album on the Resolution 653  sampler 12” (NONPLUS013) with electro x juke style tracks ‘Thomp’ and ‘When I Dip” which have both been savaging dance floors worldwide over the last few months in the sets of DJs such as Loefah, Addison Groove and Benji B amongst others.

aa) When I Dip

Released 21st March.

Instra:mental Resolution 653 LP Sampler ‘Thomp’ / ‘When I Dip’ [NONPLUS013] by stholdings

Moving on to the full LP we are treated to the complete gamut of Instra:mental’s ability. Tracks like ‘Aggro Acid’ and ‘Talkin Mono’ give us crude analogue acid modulation at its rawest that twists and gurgles across the sound spectrum with mesmeric manipulation, whilst others such as ‘Memory Implant’, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Plok’ take us deep into synth arrangements that have become synonymous with their name.

Having worked predominantly at higher tempos and made a significant impact on the Drum and bass scene in 2008/9/10, most of this album is focused on the 120-140 bpm tempo and they have studied every avenue to seek out new and interesting possibilities for originality within a tempo range that has been so thoroughly exploited over the years. They take elements of eras gone by and revitalise them with the use of old skool equipment mixed with modern production techniques. As usual their impressive hoard of vintage hardware plays an integral part in their characteristic sound. Whether it be techno, dubstep, drum and bass or electro that they turn their hand to, their Instra:mental sound shines through and makes genre irrelevant.

Fact Magazine 100 best tracks of 2010

Fact Magazine article – 100 best tracks of 2010

78: Fis-T
 ”Night Hunter”
502 Recordings (502001)
Fis-T arrived from nowhere this year to prove that dubstep wobble, when deployed skillfully, is still one of the most powerful dancefloor tools around. This track hits like a torpedo.

72: Jamie Woon
 ”Night Air” Candent (CDNT001)
Mountaintop ballad by someone destined for big things when his album drops next year. Preferable in its rain-splattered early form; once the backing choir turn up it gets a bit dry ice and Phil Collins, but everyone’s partial to a bit of ‘Sussudio’ every now and then.

64: Pearson Sound
 ”Blanked”
Hessle Audio (HES016)
Survey some people with their finger on the pulse about who makes the best dancefloor tunes right now, and we’d wager David Kennedy will appear more than once. ‘Blanked’, released less than a month ago, seemed to mark the accumulation of his work as Ramadanman and Pearson Sound this year – so that’s ‘Work Them’, ‘Glut’, ‘Tempest’, ‘Grab Somebody’, ‘Fall Short’, ‘Don’t Change for Me’ and more – expanding on those meticulous intros and outros, sharp booty-leaning drums and gut-wrenching breakdowns that seem to drown in sub-bass.

55: Breach
 ”Fatherless” PTN (PTN004)
Who’d have thought that Ben Westbeech, a man with a reputation for considered, perhaps overly musical house music would pull out one of the most ominous dancefloor stompers of the summer? This single also featured two of 2010′s most overlooked tracks in B-side ‘Man Up’ and the runaway train that was Doc Daneeka’s remix.

47: Pangaea
‘Sunset Yellow’ Hessle Audio (HES010)
Nauseous, infected music from one of the artists behind the Hessle Audio label, with divas from forgotten raves crammed together into a demonic torch song.

31: Peverelist
”Better Ways Of Living” Punch Drunk (DRUNK017)
Peverelist’s ever more skilfully honed but reliably rugged output ought to embarrass some of his lazier and less inspired contemporaries. As far as stripped, jungle and techno-inflected dubstep goes, no can hold a candle to this guy; kids picking up ‘Better Ways’ second-hand in 30 years time will be as blown away by it then as we are now.

26: Guido
 ”Mad Sax” Punch Drunk (DRUNK016 / DRUNKCD003 / DRUNKCD004)
Guido may often be associated associated with that “purple” synth sound, but the truth is he’s got the whole colour spectrum in his employ. As you might expect, there’s plenty of sax in ‘Mad Sax’, pouring like lava though an enchanted forest of larger-than-life crashing timpani, post-coital vocal moans and echo-drenched keyboard chords. As ever with the young Bristol producer, the influence of video game soundtracks on his work is marked, but believe us when we say that there isn’t a video game in existence mad enough to be soundtracked by ‘Mad Sax’. Though we dare say someone in Japan is working on it as we speak.

22: Pariah
”Prism”R&S (RS1005)
Pariah gets compared to Burial, but with ‘Prism’ he showed that although his tracks may be – like Burial’s – nostalgic and heartbroken, his true strength lies in the way he combines that rain-splattered aesthetic with some of the punchiest, most devastating drum loops and acid basslines around.

21: Pinch
‘Croydon House’
Swamp81 (SWAMP007)
One of this year’s most evil and effective club tracks, and for us the first truly vital production to have come out of Pinch’s studio in years. Its rolling subs and crisp claps bring to mind the kind of minimal, rave-friendly grime you simply never hear anymore, whiles its loose congas gesture at UK funky even as they play covert homage to the peerless 2004-6 style of Swamp81 boss Loefah. Absolute murder.

16: Addison Groove
 ”Footcrab” Swamp81 (SWAMP005)
Bristol’s Headhunter has been one of dubstep’s most historically consistent artists, with regular releases on Tempa and more. But it wasn’t until 2010, making acid and juke-influenced dancefloor tracks between dubstep tempo and house tempo, that he had his first hit. ‘Footcrab”s incredibly simple – a steady kick, ice cold chords and a cut-up vocal on a constant loop, with an almost mournful breakdown that could be from a different song entirely – and it proved irresistible to DJs as widespread as Ricardo Villalobos and James Zabiela.

06: James Blake
‘CMYK’
R&S (RS1003)
James Blake has become renowned for having His Own Unique Sound, but what’s really impressive is the diversity with which he’s applied that. On the Bells Sketch EP the London producer made ballroom music for purgatory; on the later Klavierwerke, swingless minimalism that soundtracked sheer fear. In between them came ‘CMYK’, Blake’s most anthemic single to date, full of unashamed Aaliyah and Kelis samples and synths that explode like paint cans thrown against walls. We like anthemic. Anthemic’s good.

02: Ramadanman
‘Glut’
Hemlock (HEK008)
No one artist made more great tracks than Ramadanman in 2010. Already one of the UK’s prime producers, every single that David Kennedy, who’s in the process of phasing out the Ramadanman name in favour of Pearson Sound, released this year either showed another string to his bow, or expanded and honed what was there already.

We had warped experiments with space and percussion (‘Bleeper’, ‘Tumble’), junglist epics (‘Don’t Change for Me’) and some seriously gorgeous house records (‘Your Words Matter’ and his remix of ‘Night Air’), but the main narrative for Kennedy’s discography in 2010 started when he switched to 808-driven drum sounds – something that people thought Addison Groove would make his own in the UK this year. We know, everyone remembered that 808s were great again in 2010, but no one used them quite like Rama did, particularly on this track, for our money an unfairly underrated cousin of ‘Work Them’ and ‘Blanked’.

What still amazes us about ‘Glut’, as well as its B-side ‘Tempest’ and the rest of David Kennedy’s material from 2010, is as you listen to it, you’re incredibly aware of every move it makes, and why it’s making them – there’s almost no surprises, because it all makes such perfect sense and it’s all so perfectly timed. Like all he’s doing is filling in the obvious gaps with the obvious colours. And yet, when moments like that flash of synths in ‘Glut’s breakdown happen, there’s no possible reaction to give past sheer awe.

Coming soon – Headhunter “Lost Prophet / Chasing Dragons” [IDLE004]

Posted 11 November 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 1 Comment

The forthcoming release from Idle Hands, direct out of Rooted Records in Bristol, features Headhunter on the heavy UK House / Funky / Techno vibe.

Whether throwing down techno-informed steppers for Tempa or creating juke-fuelled hysteria around crustaceans for Loefah’s Swamp81 imprint, Headhunter (and his Addison Groove alias) always brings a startling level of sophistication to his productions. These two cuts bear the same high standards while also revealing a little more about his sonic palette.

‘Chasing Dragons chimes in on an instantly upbeat tip, pummelling a soca rhythm against an undulating melody. ‘Lost Prophet surges forth on a rock solid four-to-the-floor propulsion, offset by snappy top end percussion before being swathed in haunting pads and dubby FX.

Deep without being downbeat and immaculately crafted, IDLE004 adds ever more breadth to the legacies of Headhunter, Idle Hands and ultimately Bristol music.

Saigon Recordings was established in early 2010 after the discovery of some truly unique talent hovering in-between the Techno and Dubstep circles. Operating out of the South of England (UK) Saigon Recordings will be unleashing music from a variety of relatively untapped and exciting artists including Orphan101, Duffstep, Microburst, Ike Release, Gravious and more.

Orphan101 Bio:

Coming from the musical melting pot that is Bristol England Orphan101’s Blend of four to the floor Dubstep and Techno have brought him fast acclaim and attention of genre impresarios like Appleblim (Apple Pips / Skull Disco), Headhunter (Tempa), Jus Wan (Apple Pips), DJ Pinch (Tectonic) and RSD (Punch Drunk Records) to name but a few.

His wide range of musical tastes have certainly shone through in his productions with labels such as Appleblim’s highly regarded Apple Pips label, British based alternative label Saigon Recordings and Deca Rhythm already signing tracks from him, all due for release in 2010 making this a very busy year for Orphan101.

Orphan101

His live DJ sets have gained a reputation on radio and in clubs as a new diverse sound with little or no boundaries to what he will play. His sets do not sound out of place whether it be minimal house, techno or dubstep This approach has recently earned him a residency in Berlin, Bristol and also Apple Pips nights across Europe.

His current production collaborations include Headhunter, Bloodman Appleblim and Gatekeeper to name just a few, with remix work being picked carefully to fit with his own production roster.
