MODULE002 The Cleaner / Raindance – Hybris Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Modulations is the proud younger sibling of Critical music launched in 2010. The label got a head start with Lenzman and now brings yet more vacuum-packed freshness, this time from new boy Hybris. An awesome second release for the fledgling imprint that’s got people talking throughout the scene. The schedule for Modulations will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. First up is ‘The Cleaner’ with sharp drums and that dangerous subliminal, almost toxic bassline. Serving as the perfect accompaniment to ‘Raindance’ with its thunder cloud atmospherics, it has the electricity, the thickness in the air and delivers the quiet before the stormy drops. The single is a perfecect combination, even meteorologically, and should make any drum and bass connoisseur fidget with anticipation for more from Hybris. ‘Raindance’ is a hauntingly beautiful take on what we would expect from darkside of drum and bass. The tribal vocals and broken beat percussion make it a tune to be remembered with subtle but sick bass and a fantastic spatial awareness. It shows how less can be so much more with a classy production prowess that many drum and bass veterans still strive for. So hold tight and be prepared to be carried away in the hypnotic magic of ‘Raindance’.

NONPLUS007 Ochre / Cascade Failure – Vaccine Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus 007 sees the Californian based producer Vaccine make her debut on the label with a brace of tracks in her signature style of rich musical textures and ingenious drum arrangements. With a wealth of releases on labels such as Hotflush and Tempa, its safe to say that quality control has never been an issue for her and this release is no exception.
a) Vaccine ‘Ochre’ – The a-side ‘Ochre’ with its scratchy lo-fi beats and rugged gliding bassline is textbook Vaccine. An abstract looping vocal brings an almost soulful edge to the track but it still remains tense and gritty throughout. Doing damage in clubs across the world but just as relevant at home, this track will stay in your playlist for the long haul.
aa) Vaccine ‘Cascade failure’ – Slightly mellower than the a-side but on more of an emotive tip, this track plays with orchestral “Burialesque” chords and melodies and really makes you get your thinking cap on. Once again her trademark lo-fi beats and percussion swirl around in seemingly effortless complex patterns, with layer upon layer of chords and melodies the track has so much depth its almost impossible to take it all in with just one listen.

HUMA8030 Hardcore Will Never Die / Systems Activated – Zardonic Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Zardonic join’s forces with Counterstrike & Mumblz. Zardonic’s brand of Drum & Bass has four main elements: the Melodic element (as there’s nothing I hate the most than these stupid dark tracks that have no melody on them and it’s all about noise and no key notes), the Latin element (coming from Venezuela, savage grooves just have to be there), the Industrial element (yup, I like noise, with melody, but always a reason behind my tracks sounding so overcrowded), and obviously the Metal element, since I’m stuck using minor thirds, fourths, fifths, diminished fifths, or ninths, and a lot of amp simulators to add that organic tone in my reeces and leads. That pretty much sums it up. Melody. Latin. Industrial. Metal.

VOOMUSIC002 Voodoo 2 – Raiden & Khanage Voodoo Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. We are proud to bring you Voodoo Music 002. After the success of debut release from head honcho Raiden, Voodoo comes correct once more for the second release. Two tracks from Raiden & Khanage that continue the ongoing collaborative partnership between the pair that has seen releases on Renegade Hardware & Offkey- and now its the turn of V002. The tracks have been supported by Doc Scott, dBridge, Loxy, Rockwell, Genotype, Morphy & Data amongst others. Here is the lowdown. Amnesia Haze: The track began life at 2am on a pitch black winters night in Tallinn after Raiden & Khanage had been worked on ‘King Stays King’ and the ‘Mirage Remix’. After a break in studio time listening to Jeff Mills’ most abstract works the track began to roll out. Guided by the substance that the track takes its name from the pair wanted to create a brooding, sinister tribal banger- and without a doubt achieved this. Pounding sub bass, rolling percussion and haunting strings all add to the picture, the word Voodoo could not be more any appropriate when it comes to Amnesia Haze. The track ignited the flame that is voodoo music.
8798: Encouraged by the reactions to ‘Haze’ Raiden & Khanage followed up with 8798- The perfect tune to pair with Haze. The track carries a stark vibe, driven by percussion, tense drum work and accents and effects that further add to the landscape of the track. In contrast to the textures of ‘Haze’,’8798′ carries on a single minded mission. Underpinned by a bass that is 50,000 leagues below- 8798 moves along with weighty confidence as a result of the rumbling frequency. The brief was very clear from the very beginning for these two tracks- to come with something that was unmistakably voodoo, bringing you a complete picture of what the label represents, and without having to put that into anymore words than we have already – We think you know.

Actually we all know that’s incorrect, but when done by Seba it takes on a different meaning. Giving a huge nod back to the oldschool, we see Seba delving into pure house inspired drum & bass. Shuffling drums with added chop switch-ups along with pulsating bass rolls the tune along. The classic vocal “Let there be house” commands us and keeps our attention leading up to the amazing breakdown. Finish copy promo. After leaving behind the Somalian pirates, Geiom is cruising the sunny waters of the Indian Ocean when he picks up a distress signal on his scanner. He follows the signal until he locates a tiny remote island and a guy called Bowly, who said that he was on his way from France to the New World, but got totally lost. Judging by the age of the map he was using its easy to see how. Bowly spent his time on the island hanging out with the locals who amuse themselves by creating a unique style of music on some amazing handcrafted instruments. Geiom helps Bowly get on his way again, and leaves him with a more useful map. Some months later, Bowly beams over his music as a gift from his new found homeland in Canada – the tracks are like some strange mutation of those distant tropical players and the UK-based pirate radio transmissions that Bowly has been tuning into – Geiom loves the result and decides to send them straight over to Transition in London for mastering and release on Berkane Sol. PHONICA005 Play The Game EP – Midland Phonica Records 12″ Vinyl
London’s Phonica Records calls upon new talent Midland for its fifth 12″ release, a four track EP that also includes a remix from Dexter. The Leeds-based producer is set to blow up in 2010, having announced his arrival last month with the “Your Words Matter” 12″ on Aus Music, a collaboration with pal Ramadanman. “Play The Game” begins moodily, Midland setting the scene with deep dub-chords before letting rip with a beautifully controlled breakbeat and a warm, insistent bassline. When the doleful string-pads arrive you know you’re dealing with an anthem, and the intensity continues to rise as yearning, ethereal vocal snippets a la Burial, Pangaea or Joy Orbison skirt of the rhythm’s surface. The track is a masterclass in building tension, with a succession of nail-biting builds giving way to subtle but devastating drops, and in this Midland shows uncommon maturity for such a young producer. On the remix front we find Holland’s one and only Dexter. Fresh from “Redbox” – on Steffi’s Dolly imprint, Dexter completely reinvents Midland’s “Play The Game”, turning out a finished product that really doesn’t sound like anything else out there right now. While working on his 2nd album, he has also found time for other projects, such as collabs with Gridlok, Chris.SU and Jade. Beyond doubt, by 2010 he become an unavoidable force in the international drum and bass scene.

SUBTLE013 Tensions – Sub Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Subtle Audio makes it’s return to the vinyl fold with this brand new 3 tracker by Austria’s Sub. Living at high altitude in his native land, it comes as no surprise that these tracks exude an icy sound. “Tensions” is a beautifully delicate piece of D&B. Sharp snares, hi-hats and drifting atmospheres are underpinned by a sub-zero bass sound. Suddenly the beats thicken and become twisted and glitchy. It’s almost as if a frozen lake you were standing on is beginning to crack and give way! “Halleluja” is on the half-speed tip and will not even sound like D&B to most. Choir voices are interrupted by a stepping beat and a shuddering, dirty bassline, offset by a world of icey atmospherics, echoes and feedback. This sound is truly from another planet. “Hydra” is something a little different for Subtle Audio – clocking in at 120bpm but it certainly doesn’t sound like house or techno! It’s a nicely mellow track with a lurching, jerky beat that is filtered and reversed but always rhythmical. Dark Rhodes keys and then a bright piano line ensure a nice variance of mood in this beautifully balanced piece.

Two of the most talked about producers of recent times, June Miller & Anile, join forces to devastating effect for DSM016, and together they have crafted the darkest release to grace Deep Soul Music so far. Stripped back to very fundamentals of the genre, you can hear elements of his trademark half-step sound but with the rolling drums and big bass, this is one of Anile’s more dancefloor orientated efforts and judging by the reaction from dj’s and ravers alike, he has got the formula just right.

Imagine combining Lifted Music with 3 of the Dubstep scenes biggest, most progressive artists. Now, throw in the fact that two of Lifted Music’s most recognised back catalogue anthems have been remixed by these said artists. Then, let your mouth water at the idea of a 12” consisting of Spor ‘Knock You Down’ (Eskmo Remix) and Apex ‘Nowhere to Run’ (Datsik & Excision Remix). Go on, we’ll let you dribble for a moment… Scheduled for full release on 31st May 2010, Lifted Music presents their debut release within the Dubstep genre, and judging by the enormous feedback, things look sharp. Featuring heavily on rotation in both scenes, including BBC Radio 1 airplay in mixes, LFTDSTEP001 has raised the level of Lifted Music’s output once again. Crossing the boundaries between the two scenes is often an eyebrow-raising moment, but having drafted in Dubstep’s finest exports, confidence is at an allround high. Eskmo’s grudging approach to the seminal debut release from Spor on LFTD001 with ‘Knock You Down’ is a testament to progression at its finest. Around 4 years old, Eskmo has breathed life into an already exhilarating classic. Fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Aggro ‘140’ maestros Datsik & Excision go hard on ‘Nowhere To Run’, the original from Lifted Music specialist Apex on his LFTD004 ‘Wall of Sound’ EP. Transforming and growling between bars, this industrial remix was recently featured in Excisions recent BBC Radio 1 Mix.

PTN002 More Than Ever EP – Hackman PTN 12″ Vinyl
Briskly traveling from Swansea to Leeds, PTN follows Doc Daneeka’s release with an equally hyped EP of fresh material from Hackman, who along with Doc D, featured in FACT Magazine’s top 10 producers to watch for the year. Hackman is one of the exploding Funky movement’s best and brightest producers, rising fast and unleashing unstoppable rhythm after unstoppable rhythm. Profiled by the venerable and influential Blackdown in 2009 Hackman is no stranger to hype even so early in his career. But it’s not all just hype, and if anything, the hyperbole is warranted. Hackman makes music in line with other prominent Funky producers, but his productions have a certain sheen and a peculiarly humid quality that make them unmistakable. His impressive grasp of bass (see the absolutely crushing basslines in “Bodies” and “Surround” off of his EP for Well Rounded, betrays his initial foray into dubstep, and it lends his music a power both more nuanced and more visceral than many of his contemporaries.

MEDI027 Tenopause / Discreet Dub – Calibre Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Calibre flexes his dubstep muscles, here making his second outing on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint – the first was a subtle rolling garage-like affair that had all the hallmarks of Calibre’s drum & bass sound as well as Deep Medi’s deepness. The highlight here has to be ‘Tenopause,’ where Calibre’s knack for subtle rolling percussive bliss is in full effect. The hi-hats draw you in with their fluid forward motion and when they play off the kicks and that addictive bass line pulses with hypnotic energy before flailing off into open space like it’s ricocheted off a passing space cruiser, you’re deep into eyes down zoned out, head nod, arm shake territory. ‘Discreet Dub’ is a more spaced out affair, slowing things down to a half step and upping the atmosphere as the bass seduces you into a state of bliss as it shifts amongst the eerie Middle Eastern melodies. It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a postgarage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music.
DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM and more recently by Gilles Peterson on Radio 1. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.

ATM002 Spectrum Falls / Giga – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated second full length ‘Midnight Colour’ on Planet Mu in June, Ital Tek drops two multicoloured cuts for the second single on his own Atom River label. The A side ‘Spectrum Falls’ is a cascade of arpeggios, steel drumlike melodies and cutting saw-tooth bass. The track is already featuring in DJ sets from the likes of Surgeon and Starkey and is set to appear on the Fabric53 album. ‘Giga’ on the flip is a long time staple and favourite of Ital Tek’s DJ sets. A tough, swung 2-step beat, underpinned with bouncing sub bass and washes of reverberated fuzzed out chords and dub stacks. The first taste of what will be a very busy year for this producer.

He has been one of the pioneers to push the blossoming sound of Dubstep outside of the Uk from early on. hes been running his version events since 2005 with guests like Digital Mystikz, Skream, Loefah, Kode 9, Benny Ill and many more. Orson is known for his exclusive upfront dubplate selection and has played at such legendary events as the mighty ‘Dmz’ dance in Brixton in early 2008 and 2009, the ‘Big Apple Records’ Christmas party and at ‘Dubwar’ in New York. An astounding compilation of the breakneck Shangaan dance output of the Nozinja studio in Soweto, recorded between 2006 and 2009. The traditional Shangaan music is fast. You play it slow, they won’t dance. music. Shangaan is fast. While others play at 110, we are at 180, 182, 183. And when you hear those marimba beats and that live guitar through the keyboard, you know it’s Shangaan. You hear those toms, then you know, this is Shangaan music. “You must be prepared to see the fastest dance ever,” Dog declares. The dances are wild, with films of them attracting more than half a million hits on You Tube. The tradition grows out of the Shangaan disco movement, a music that dominated in the ’80s with artists like Penny Penny and Peter Teanet. Shangaan disco ran at 110 BPM. Dog’s music is around 180 and it’s getting faster. Yet the lyrics seem to run counter to this rapidity. They read like African soap operas, tied up with domestic matters and a yearning for the slower life. This is country music. There’s something distinctive in this Shangaan perspective: they are one of the more rural and traditional groups in the wealthiest African nation, yet ‘tradition’ to them can also be living, electronic and nuanced. Just as Dog samples American phrases in his songs, his videos cut in shots of white joggers on a spring day, a foggy lakeshore somewhere like Wisconsin, even a corporate office space —mundane yet exotic images which become intriguing takes on the modern South African dream. Instead of African music becoming Americanized and re‐framed for the global market, Dog’s productions do the opposite. American phrases and foreign images become samples in his collage, in his traditional context. This album is the first release of its kind outside South Africa. Here is Dog’s music as‐is.

MTR005 Borderline / Crackdown – Sinister Souls Mindtrick Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Second release for the young Dutch act Sinister Souls, following a debut on Excision’s Rottun. These two ‘Borderline’ tracks are of the slow-moving, heavy and scraping dubstep kind, and somewhat shows well how the whole dark d’n'b sensibilities can translate into this genre. As with Broken Note, Matta, The Eerier Child or a good part of the Rottun people, gone are most dub elements, replaced by grating distortion and dark undertones. It’s all pretty bassy and massive in here, and should work perfectly with headnodders.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

Raiden’s label always comes with something different from the usual D&B formula rubbish. Martsman’s track is very impressive, with his refreshing future sound. On the other side it’s business as usual from Raiden with help from Khanage, its funky, and not as full on as normal, but again right at the cutting edge. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. In 2008, tracks on Warm Communications and Hospital Records’ sub label Med School attract the attention of a steadily growing audience also from outside the Drum&Bass scene.

If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right? Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

Hungary is the fresh birthplace of so many top producers within the DnB scene.. Mindscape, Matt-U, Chris SU, SKC. But this one producer has managed to produce so many killer tracks Citrus could not just leave it alone… This Producer is Jade. And his Venom LP is the result of his hard work. A deadly collection of productions that, once injected into the eardrum will grasp the host track by track until there isn’t anything left! The LP starts off with the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time. This Tech’d out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Then flip it over for the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you haven’t heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Disc 2 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalist sound. Oldskool tech-steppin vibes are definitely the case here but with an upgraded 2009 feel! For side 4 Jade teams up with long-time producer friend Matt-U. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this. then logical is the way to go. Moblaw is a straight up elbow greaser that’ll make you get messy on the dance floor. The funk just oozes off this tight production that’ll make you scream for more! Then on to disc 3… where Jade remixes three of his best friends. namely the Dutch trio that’s Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production. But now its time to repay the favour as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dance floor filth like no other. Have the tables turned? Then for the flip Jade teams up with another group of comrades, namely the Mindscape boys! These guys aren’t by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for the final disc. Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. half step, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Then for the last one.. Jade doesn’t sees the last tune to be a tune to be neglected. So on this one he goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummelled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond proportions!

Following on perfectly from Boxcutter and Kinnego Flux’s “A Familiar Sound” on KGO001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved-up electro. Equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and early Aphex Twin, Jack’s all-analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound that’s a mile away from contemporary electro and house. On the other side it’s business as usual from Raiden with help from Khanage, its funky, and not as full on as normal, but again right at the cutting edge. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. In 2008, tracks on Warm Communications and Hospital Records’ sub label Med School attract the attention of a steadily growing audience also from outside the Drum&Bass scene.

Fresh from tours in the USA and Australia, Distance commits two more of his killer dubplates to vinyl, putting an evil smirk on the face of Dubstep DJs and fans everywhere. Now seven releases in, the Chestplate imprint is well and truly established as a buy-on-sight label. This time around sees a new Distance anthem on side A, accompanied by a Pinch reversion of Distance’s modern classic ‘V’ on the flip. Twilight is Distance in primetime dancefloor destruction mode. No messin’! The theremin like spooky ambient melodies oscillate and brood, making way for the trademark Distance crunching riff. It smacks of Distance on top of his game. It slays and it dips, only to come back harder. This one should remind the Dubstep new skool that you don’t have to tear your brain out to make tear out. Turn the 12 over and original badman, Bristol lynchpin Pinch, comes correct with his version of the Distance speaker wrecker V. Pinch twists up and reconfigures the original into a new sonic horror show. This should be the office ambience of torture chambers everywhere. Pinch suppresses the drive and riff of Distance’s version, accentuating the more unnerving elements; yes it’s subtle, but it’s not any less devastating. If the system packs enough punch, this one will literally turn guts. Major support comes from the crop of discerning dubstep DJs, with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. Both MRK1 and Cyrus’ records can consistency be heard all over the world tearing through your local club’s subs and blowing up the speakers in your 10 watt radio as you listen to any of the number of electronic DJs on BBC Radio 1, 1xtra, Kiss FM etc now supporting the bass heavy genre that dominates music’s lowest frequencies. For this 12” two of Dubstep’s most established artists return to Eight:FX for the next in the labels Future:Dubstep series. To coincide with the release of MRK1′s Future:Dubstep:03 compilation, him and Cyrus each present two massive chest cavity shattering, club smashes which have received support from some of the biggest names in the scene and the likes of Kiss FM and BBC 1xtra on Crissy Criss’ Drum & Bass show. MRK1 was there from the start. He’s appeared on every major Dubstep radio station, as well as BBC Radio 1, 1Xtra and Kiss FM. He’s toured the world, and been featured in magazines from RWD and Knowledge to Mixmag, and this months I-DJ, making him without shadow of doubt one of the most established players in the Dubstep scene, ever. Cyrus is another of Dubstep’s veterans. Having released on legendary labels including Hyperdub and Techtonic, played all over the globe at the genre’s most prestigious events and venues, as well as on BBC Radio 1. Having taken almost a year away from vinyl following Hatcha Vs Kromestar’s Brother’s Grim LP, and concentrating on a host of successful digital releases, Eight:FX recently returned to 12” for a series of vinyl to coincide with their Future:Dubstep compilations. 01 was mixed by Kiss FM’s Hatcha while 02 was mixed by newcomers Bare Noize. The first Future: Dubstep 12” release featured tracks from both of these artists and was the start of a new push for Eight:FX to build back up vinyl fan’s awareness of the label. This is the second step, featuring tracks that have been supported around the world, and released alongside the 2 x CD compilation mixed by MRK1 (which contains over 45 completely exclusive tracks from other Dubstep superstars including Crazy D, Hatcha, and Kromestar) this is sure to see Eight:FX not only topping digital genre charts but also in the top echelons of the physical charts once again.

FRJ005 Reminder – Sully Frijsfo Beats 12″ Vinyl

Griping about dubstep seems pretty pointless at the moment – for almost every formulaic record on the shelves, there’s another young, creative producer beating a much more interesting path. Norwich’s Jack Stevens – better known as Sully – is justifiably seen as one of those individuals. Tantalisingly doing the rounds on dub for long enough now, “Reminder” and “Jackman’s Rec” should usher in Sully’s biggest moment yet. Since Blackdown (AKA Martin Clark) included both in his end-of-year dubstep chart for Pitchfork, he and DJ partner Dusk have supported the tunes consistently on Rinse FM and at FWD>>, also featuring “Jackman’s Rec” in their XLR8R magazine podcast last year. “Reminder” has subsequently been deployed in sets by Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew, the latter including it in their recent contribution to FACT magazine’s respected mix series. One of Sully’s tricks is that his music never falls into predictable slots. “Reminder” might be a peak-time, late-summer skanker, but there isn’t a clichéd reggae sample in earshot. Instead, it’s closer to a translation of pioneering producer Pole’s crackly dub abstractions into dancefloor form. “Jackman’s Rec” is a velvety roller that on one level, is the best example so far of how Sully’s intuition for swing allows him to nail the dark sensuality of early FWD>> beats. Yet at the same time, it’s in no way trapped in nostalgia for that era, simply sounding like the next step for future garage. “Reminder” / “Jackman’s Rec” is released on 12” vinyl and digital formats, including 50 12” white-labels available in advance. In addition, two more excursions from Sully, “Sleazy” and “Cadillac”, are on sale as downloads only, recommended in September by Boomkat.

Its like Snoop Dogg is floating on this orange cloud on his way to Jamaica to fill up his stash. A tune that finishes of this 12 inch in style and cements Taz as one to watch in the future! UK based company ‘Factory Road’ have come up with a great redesign of the classic 45rpm apapters for all those vinyl junkies out there. Made in England from recycled plastic, available in various colours, and has extra fat teeth for great grip. The are currently being sold in packs of 10. A great little product for shops to display in store.

Due for release in October 2009 is the first release from Bristol based label ‘If Symptoms Persist’.

Catering for more than just the dancefloor, ISP crosses a range of exciting underground genres to create an infusion of Dubstep, Techno, Glitch, Electro, Garage, R&B and experimental music. ISP presents a range of talented artists with one common interest, the love of electronic music.

The label was setup by DJ Wedge, considered a veteran of the Dubstep scene in Bristol and responsible for a popular radio show on Sub FM which is renowned for showcasing and pushing the unmistakeable Bristol sounds.
