EXITLP004 Live For Never LP (Vinyl Format) – Consequence Exit Records 12″ Vinyl x 4
Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

NONPLUS003 Porcelain – ASC Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Instra:mental welcome a new addition to the Nonplus+ camp who goes by the name of ASC. This producer is by no means new to making music, but recently his productions have become an essential addition to dBridge & Instra:mental’s Autonomic podcast series and also frequents their club sets.
a) ASC ‘Porcelain’ is a perfect illustration as to why Instra:mental have been paying ASC’s music so much attention. It begins with a glitchy yet groove-laden beat coupled with dramatic piano and fx stabs, then fills out with a warm drawing sub bass and smooth atmospheres. As the track progresses and you think it’s reached its climax, ASC cleverly layers an almost oriental sounding percussion stab to accompany the bass line and picks up the track to another level. This track is a prime example of being able to express the utmost with the minimum.
aa) ASC ‘Focus Inwards’ is the deeper side of this 12” and as the title suggests, takes you on a journey into yourself. Fully charged with progressive chords and melodies alongside electric sounding drum fills and percussion, the arrangement, musical content and pure elegance of this track give us an insight into ASC’s compositional abilities and potential for the future.

He’s toured the world, and been featured in magazines from RWD and Knowledge to Mixmag, and this months I-DJ, making him without shadow of doubt one of the most established players in the Dubstep scene, ever. Cyrus is another of Dubstep’s veterans. Having released on legendary labels including Hyperdub and Techtonic, played all over the globe at the genre’s most prestigious events and venues, as well as on BBC Radio 1. Having taken almost a year away from vinyl following Hatcha Vs Kromestar’s Brother’s Grim LP, and concentrating on a host of successful digital releases, Eight:FX recently returned to 12” for a series of vinyl to coincide with their Future:Dubstep compilations. 01 was mixed by Kiss FM’s Hatcha while 02 was mixed by newcomers Bare Noize. The first Future: Dubstep 12” release featured tracks from both of these artists and was the start of a new push for Eight:FX to build back up vinyl fan’s awareness of the label. Kokeshi is the new label from Alley Cat, DJ/producer and co-director of ESP Agency with 12 years+ of music industry experience. Lung : Afterlife / Time – 19-year-old discovery Lung, from Cardiff has only been producing for a short time but has managed to make some of the most moving sounds this year. Spatial’s inaugural release on Infrasonics in late 2008 was enthusiastically welcomed by listeners, DJsand critics, as was its follow-up earlier this year, a reaction attributable to the producer’s instinctive fit with one of the prevailing moods in dubstep – in reclaiming the fluidity of 2-step garage and reappropriating dub-techno processes, these productions capably stand alongside those of Martyn or 2562. More than the execution of these satisfying tropes, though, their strength lies in a spooky attunement to the faint vibrations of a whole spectrum of dancefloor epiphanies, presenting in some ways a crisper, less melancholy counterpart to Burial, or even James Kirby’s projects as The Caretaker, but from the right side of the comedown. This latest collection of tracks, possibly Spatial’s most evocative, takes indirect inspiration from experience of the kind of ‘91-era Euro-rave documented in Warlock’s recent mix for FACT magazine. Removed as the comparison might seem given their wrought, contemporary sound, vestiges are detectable, such as the transmuted hoover basslines, hollow panic-synths and ectoplasmic vocal trails that at the peak of these tunes threaten to fill out Spatial’s characteristically airy, open-textured mix. Correspondingly, ‘90729′ and ‘90807′ all constitute conscious attempts to aim more squarely at the dancefloor, with success already coming in the form of DJ support from Untold, Incyde, T++, and Dubwar NYC resident Dave Q.

EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl

Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right? Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

The LP starts off with the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time. This Tech’d out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Then flip it over for the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you haven’t heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Disc 2 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalist sound. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this. then logical is the way to go. Then on to disc 3… where Jade remixes three of his best friends. namely the Dutch trio that’s Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production. But now its time to repay the favour as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dance floor filth like no other. Have the tables turned? Then for the flip Jade teams up with another group of comrades, namely the Mindscape boys! These guys aren’t by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for the final disc. Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. half step, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Then for the last one.. Jade doesn’t sees the last tune to be a tune to be neglected. So on this one he goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummelled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond proportions!

Finish copies. Raiden’s label always comes with something different from the usual D&B formula rubbish. Martsman’s track is very impressive, with his refreshing future sound. On the other side it’s business as usual from Raiden with help from Khanage, its funky, and not as full on as normal, but again right at the cutting edge. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. In 2008, tracks on Warm Communications and Hospital Records’ sub label Med School attract the attention of a steadily growing audience also from outside the Drum&Bass scene.

Italian based Subculture Records however are looking to add firin’ drum & bass to that list as they present their third release from label owner Maztek and UK producers Sleeper Cell. Batton down the hatches, things are about to get rowdy! Sci-fi sounds capes are rife as Sleeper Cell and Maztek team up for ‘Swoop’ to open up Scult003 with its rich textured break, eerie pads and industrial fx. After a tense dropout it’s time to move out as the super-sick bass rocks into the mix along with the rugged beats to provide a great example of the neurofunk sound. If the system packs enough punch, this one will literally turn guts. Major support comes from the crop of discerning dubstep DJs, with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. After the success of the first release (by Boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named ‘Space Dimension Controller’….the techno funk alias of 19-year-old Jack Hamill. Following on perfectly from Boxcutter and Kinnego Flux’s “A Familiar Sound” on KGO001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved-up electro. Equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and early Aphex Twin, Jack’s all-analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound that’s a mile away from contemporary electro and house. The beats are low slung and funky, and the melodies are addictive and show a natural flair. On “The Love Quadrant”, a girl / boy vocal exchange sets the scene while the track builds momentum, before the whole thing spaces off on a sweet minimoog solo. On the flip, “Electropod-250 Collision” has a deep 808 pulse and flanged bass, topped off with Detroit-inspired melodies and blurred out reverbs.

Griping about dubstep seems pretty pointless at the moment – for almost every formulaic record on the shelves, there’s another young, creative producer beating a much more interesting path. Norwich’s Jack Stevens – better known as Sully – is justifiably seen as one of those individuals. Tantalisingly doing the rounds on dub for long enough now, “Reminder” and “Jackman’s Rec” should usher in Sully’s biggest moment yet. Since Blackdown (AKA Martin Clark) included both in his end-of-year dubstep chart for Pitchfork, he and DJ partner Dusk have supported the tunes consistently on Rinse FM and at FWD>>, also featuring “Jackman’s Rec” in their XLR8R magazine podcast last year. “Reminder” has subsequently been deployed in sets by Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew, the latter including it in their recent contribution to FACT magazine’s respected mix series. One of Sully’s tricks is that his music never falls into predictable slots. “Reminder” might be a peak-time, late-summer skanker, but there isn’t a clichéd reggae sample in earshot. Instead, it’s closer to a translation of pioneering producer Pole’s crackly dub abstractions into dancefloor form. “Jackman’s Rec” is a velvety roller that on one level, is the best example so far of how Sully’s intuition for swing allows him to nail the dark sensuality of early FWD>> beats. Yet at the same time, it’s in no way trapped in nostalgia for that era, simply sounding like the next step for future garage. “Reminder” / “Jackman’s Rec” is released on 12” vinyl and digital formats, including 50 12” white-labels available in advance. In addition, two more excursions from Sully, “Sleazy” and “Cadillac”, are on sale as downloads only, recommended in September by Boomkat.
