It’s been nearly four years since Gridlok’s debut album “Break the System” solidified his dynamic sound into the vanguards of Drum and Bass. Considered one of the best producers in the genre, Gridlok’s music disturbs and excites dance floors across the globe. Since his start in 1999, he has released tracks with some of the most respected labels in Drum and Bass, including RAM, Shogun Audio, C.I.A., Violence Recordings, and Renegade Hardware. His studio prowess has found him doing remix work for some of the brightest stars in electronic music such as Sasha, Josh Wink, Ed Rush & Optical, Mampi Swift, and Pop Will Eat Itself. An artist not only limited to consistently releasing chart-topping dance singles, Gridlok’s other noteworthy accomplishments include his work with Konami for their massive “Dance Dance Revolution” franchise, and his Grammy-nominated collaboration with AK1200 “Autopsy”, which was up for Best Electronic Album in 2008. Throughout all of this, Gridlok has maintained a relentless touring schedule taking him everywhere from Russia to Australia, delivering a vibe that is undeniable to all those that dare to strap in for the ride. After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. A pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle. “Autumn Drops” is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. Two massive productions from top class engineer Apex, as he makes his highly anticipated return to the LIfted Music release schedule. BLUSYNC002 Sampler 2 Sync: Saphir LP – Electrosoul System / Bionic1 Blu Saphir 12″ Vinyl

For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1’s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!

A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!

B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

It’s that time of the year when music related blog’s get their chart heads on and review 2009 with their top albums and singles, we tried something a little similar when S.T. The second DrumWise release with a bit different flavour, brings what’s finest in drum and bass. Utah Jazz remix of Jealous Eyes is a proper liquid roller with catchy vocals and funky piano theme. EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. Triple Vision proudly welcomes L B Recordings to the drum’n bass roster. Limewax is the man behind this label. This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. After a series of serious 12″ he released his greatly anticipated ‘Scars on the horizon’ album on Technical Freak. Vinyl copies of EX7001, Excision – ‘Yin Yang’, sold out in a matter of weeks, while the digital release has been sitting pretty at the top of the Beatport dubstep chart ever since it was dropped. Now, following on from their immense first 12”, EX7 is back with an even more impressive pair of dance floor killers. EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. The A side, ‘Swagga’, was a feature in Excision’s DJ sets on his recent UK tour as sweaty crowds of teenagers rushed the decks shouting “Play Swagga!” in anticipation of its filthy bassline combinations (we kid you not, we feared for our lives…). Not only that, but ‘Swagga’ is the only non-Rusko track that Rusko’s been battering on all his recent radio mixes; for proof just check out his recent Breezeblock mix for BBC Radio 1. Teaming up with fellow Canadian, Datsik, once again on the flip, Excision creates another mechanoid-influenced stomper that hails the beginning of Armageddon. EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. Kryptic Minds first release since their highly anticipated ‘One Of Us’ Album on Loefah’s Swamp81 label. The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

As the name suggests, ‘Blip’ on….the A centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops – sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. On the B, Gatekeeper tackles Appleblim’s Skull Disco anthem ‘Vansan’ – expounding the original themes of texture created by delay and reverb and incorporating them into a 140bpm technical jungle piece. 9/10 [recommended] DJ Thinking IDJ Magazine.

Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Strange and beautiful music, in a full-colour sleeeve to match.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.

Bristol based Dubstep label Punch Drunk Records are on a heater at the moment, having recently released the RSD LP compilation (“Good Energy. A Singles Compilation”) they are shortly due to release a debut album from label boss Peverelist entitled “Jarvik Mindstate”.

After holding down the controls since 1989 Eastside label head A Sides consistently tours the globe laying down sets in over 40 different countries worldwide. He still manages to find time to lock himself away in the studio and keep his creative output Consistently flowing. This release is a fine example and is the first in a series of A Sides releases leading up to the release of his up and coming second solo album due to hit the streets this winter. We set things off here with the dub inspired “Cheeba” which moves neatly with it’s percussive groove wrapped with a deep bouncy sub line, original step and sound clash style stabs to compliment creating a big dancehall vibe. Strictly for the head nodders! On the flip you will find “One Love” which is aimed purely at the floor. Plain and to the point the beats shuffle nicely why the bass stays minimal punching through the mix. Things get deep midway with old school style bleeps and dub style vocals as the beats roll on. One for the dj’s! Both track have received good support from major dj’s in the scene and have been featured regularly in sets by Goldie, Bailey, Randall and Marcus Intalex. We would be lying if we said we weren’t a bit bias when it comes to all things D.Kay, so it should likely come as no shock or surprise that when asked the question ‘Do you think D.Kay’s newest 12” out on Brigand is a hit?” the answer that we have no choice to reply with is a resounding YES! The deep, low end bass of ‘The Greatest Thing’, with DJ Lee, has just enough grit to it rock the damncefloor as welll as Radio 1. The percussion on this one gets an A+ for sure, with an honorable mention going to the double claps. Lastly, a half time breakdown always does a track good, and this one is without a doubt no exception. Raw.full joins D.Kay on ‘Sequential Circuit’ but this one is a 180 of the flip – tearing amens, hard hitting bass make this one an amen smasher – and it’s this tracks completely different direction that make not only it, but this 12” in general, solid all around. Appleblim first met Ramadanman and Deapoh (of Barefiles.com) at FWD>>, DMZ and various other dubstep nights when they were barely old enough to get into the clubs. Blim picked up Ramadanman’s debut release on Deapoh’s Bare Dubs imprint and started spreading it across dancefloors in a healthy pasting. A friendship was struck up. No doubt the majority of you will have already heard of Excision, one of the leading lights of the North American dubstep scene. His studio mixes have received over 60,000 downloads from one file sharing site alone, while his Rottun Recordings label regularly tops the sales charts, stacking up thousands of sales for each release on Beatport alone! Recently his official remix of Pendulum’s ‘Showdown’ brought the sound of filthy dubstep to the masses and has clocked up over 120,000 plays on the band’s Myspace page. Meanwhile DJs such as BBC 1Xtra’s Mistajam have been all over his signature sound. With so much attention from clubland and the media alike, Excision thought it was time to start a new imprint, geared to release the very biggest of the tracks in his record box. Teaming up with Infectious PR who will be managing and promoting the label on his behalf, Excision is ready to kick off EX7 (pronounced Ex-Seven, for those not in the know) with a pair of downright bangers. ‘Yin Yang’ featuring DZ is straight up LFO based dubstep at it’s finest. Flip over and ‘Obvious’ takes a surprisingly less obvious approach than you might think. Drawing out electro influences and blending them expertly with Excision’s unique hard-hitting style ‘Obvious’ is packed with energy for the dance floor but with plenty to keep you interested at home. Anyone who likes to mix up electro with dubstep should be slipping this into their sets.

Very limited edition Finish copy. Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing. Mount Kimbie have carved out another superb foursome for Hotflush, and once again the music is just as comfortable in the hiphop or electronica realm as it is dubstep. Folksy melodies and ducking piped synths swoop over garage cheek and serrated bass in opener ‘Sketch On Glass’, before ‘Serged’ takes us deeper and darker with its anti-quantised beats, spring reverb drips and surgically-altered vocals. After the Moody Boyz epic dubstep fix of ‘God Smiled’, the dancehall tune-up of ‘International Broadcaster’, and Kode 9’s funky style workout on ‘Yellow Tongue’, this latest episode in the Lee Perry bespoke remix series adds yet another twist to the musical path, with a hair-raising interpretation from Horsepower Productions. Seeping into halflight zones of bruised ambient dub, over the course of six minutes ‘Exercising’ builds like a distant tropical storm, it’s dense clouds gathering ominously on the horizon while Lee Perry’s shamanic spiritual abstractions add to the sense of heavy weather ahead. Built from similar strands of the low end gene pool as Kode 9 & The Spaceape’s ‘Sine Of The Times’, Horsepower’s brooding view of ‘Exercising’ discards dubstep’s recognised rhythmic frameworks in favour of a largely beat-free excursion, relying instead on swelling subs and oscillating bassline pulses for it’s unstoppable low tempo momentum. Tapping congas, echoing woodblocks and skeletal skittering noises dart insect-like across the mix, while the droning tabla and reverbed melodic guitar figures of Adrian Sherwood’s original production maintain an air of dread occidental mystery. With an equally massive no-vocal take on the flip, this is a simultaneously skin-chilling and oppressively close body heat raising journey to the heart of darkness, and yet another must-have release from the ever mighty On-U Sound.
