With a scene increasingly dependent on the over sweetened candy of rave junk beats, it this compilation offers a window to know there is genuine music of substance available for those who want to savor it.For most, Commercial Suicide has no equal and needs no introduction. Klute’s signature imprint, (established London, 2001) has sustained a release schedule which raised the bar in the drum and bass world. The label’s forward thinking approach has been the incubator for some of the most talented producers on the scene over the last decade. Break, Calibre, Klute, Dub Phizix, Vicious Circle; the list reads like a who’s who of contemporary drum and bass production. After extensive market research (i.e. being rewound at drum and bass events from Toronto to Tokyo) the songs were selected and what we have are 13 of the best d&b tunes covering all styles from established names to brand new up and comers.A lot of things have changed in the music business over the 10 years since, Commercial Suicide came into being. But one thing has remained constant; a great compilation can define a label and a scene or an era. Throughout 3024′s short history, the label has always carried a heavy trace of techno in its makeup: an inevitable reflection of its founder’s roots in early 90s warehouse parties. Our 15th release bears that influence out, and stands as the label’s most expansive release so far – a 4 track EP from the utterly inimitable Mosca. Leaping straight onto our radar with his opening combination of the ‘Square One / Nike’ 12’ and ‘Gold Bricks, I See You,’ it’s been a long-held ambition to work with a producer whose diversity has never once strayed into tokenism. Renowned for his glacial work rate, we bided our time as the Mosca sound veered off into new territories – and it’s with great pleasure we present the fruits of our patience here. Opening proceedings of Mosca’s ‘Wavey’ EP is ‘Dom Perignon’, a cavernous roller with a gravity inverting bass drum and dub-infused atmospherics. Developing both the intricacy of its drum programming and the implicit tension of its arrangement towards the sunrise, it’s the perfect entry point for this new side of the Mosca sound. ‘Orange Jack’ further develops this gloaming swing, both deeper into the recesses of aquatic frequency while simultaneously ramping up the groove into ultra loose woodblock territory as looped snatches of Hip Hop acapella drive out any lingering ghost’s. Tearing any hint of historical reverence away is a constantly warping bass part that is more fissure than line, and bubbling textures hinting at further shifts to come. Immediately intensifying proceedings, ‘Jager’s renewed urgency guides the EP back towards more conventional Techno, in form if not implementation. Huge phased hi-hats and gaseous sub frequencies push a Friedrichshain pulse relentlessly forward, briefly collapsing as a disembodied fire & brimstone host exhorts an unidentified audience (or maybe the track) back onto its feet and onwards with yet more resolve. Coiling and uncoiling elements of the arrangement in this second half, a single electric piano chord makes its appearance, providing an understated link back to the previous 2 tracks’ roots. Available as a digital-only track, ‘Wray & Neph’ takes the component influences of its 3 vinyl bound siblings and fuses them together as the track both hardest to classify – and also the most classically Mosca sounding. Queasy waves of synth are joined by tight hi hats and a dislocated kick before a clipped percussive swing emerges out of the haze. Marrying a defiantly 8 bar-esque bass rumble and sporadic fizzing synth breaks with shifts back into stripped down 4×4 Motorik it encapsulates The Wavey EP and all its murky splendor. As ever, Erosie blesses 3024-016 with the latest sleeve in his ever evolving series of work for 3024, in the style that has defined the label as much as its A&R policy.

Om Unit returns with ‘Transport’ a four track EP of blissful, instrumental, mechanical soul. Transport’s strength lies in the leeway afforded to the listener, rewarding patience and immersion, the EP allows those that truly engage to digest and appreciate it’s many qualities and those of it’s persistently excellent creator. Transport showcases both exceptional production and creative excellence, yet never does form displace method or vice versa. The eminence of ‘Transport’ is echoed in its remixers; revered producers Machinedrum and Ital Tek both contribute revisions to this astonishing package.Transport opens with ‘Swimming Dragon’. A rigid percussive structure underpins an array of howling synths that surround harmoniously before multiplying into a haunting cinematic workout. Then just as the listener is fully enclosed, Om Unit manipulates the flux and flow, teleporting you into another realm where low end frequencies and floating spatial atmospherics spin faster and draw ever tighter.The dream-like ‘Eternal Way’ continues in similar vein, heavenly vocal samples float on waves of skittering, energetic percussion. A poignant piano interjects, providing an enlightening succession that reinforces the enchanting ethereal nature of the track. ‘Vibrations’ contrasts a rough bassline and rounded percussion with the airy atmosphere that contains them. Imploding toms and lone delayed snares are the order of the day while a lazy bassline strolls over the top. Echoing, soulful synths overlap each other, reaching ever higher as the track climaxes. ‘Cold World’ enforces a swinging off-centre tempo, resonating, reflecting synths emerge, followed closely by modulated keys and glistening atmosphere. “Fuck the ghetto, think about space”Rounding up the package are 2 excellent remixes. Machinedrum delivers a footwork rework of ‘Vibrations’ that ups the energy levels and warps the bassline into a much darker, foreboding being. While Ital Tek adds sinister overtones to his take on ‘Swimming Dragon’. Calculated and ominous in it’s approach it loses none of the spacious atmospherics that are essential to the track. Captivating strings are added to the mix to create a well-rounded piece of ambitious proportions.

Toms, snares and claps… the classic palette of the 808 drum machine is well covered but it’s the unique poly-rhythmic synth work and angular arrangements that set the track apart from those of retro-fetishists.Cheeky and fun, ‘The Jerk’ shows that simple elements do a big roller make. So addictive, it’s the bouncing bass and buzzing lead that drag you along. A UK Garage groove takes control whilst the hollowed out barrel toms go for the gut.‘Venice Beach’ crafts bright chords that swirl and build. The infectious melody makes way for pitched bleeps and a towering ‘Reese’ bassline. Tested extensively in DoD’s frenzied live shows, ‘Venice Beach’ is the glowing, melodic heart at the centre of the adrenaline-fuelled ‘Red Waves’ collection.In ‘Bang The Drum’ Drums Of Death talks to us through a vocoder… “Just bang the drum and kill the noise, mute the synth and then the voice”. Hardly a ballad, this missive represents the newer Drums of Death sound… taught, electronic machine funk. Holding reverence for techno’s godfathers but also for it’s wayward children like Cristian Vogel, an elastic bassline lurches around rattling 909 hi-hats. ‘Bang The Drum’ rounds off a highly energetic EP that continues the ‘Waves’ odyssey of it’s composer.

“I knew straight away that this was a sound that would fit perfectly in Bristol – there is a lot of tension in the music that carries a satisfactory darkness with it, but it’s also lazy music. You don’t have to dance hard to move with it – it was born with a reefer in its gob!”

So said Pinch when I interviewed him in February 2005. Having witnessed the early DMZ and FWD>> raves that spawned this new sound we now refer to as Dubstep, and having gradually begun integrating it into the fabric of Bristol’s existing club scene, this young DJ’s instincts were proving correct. The following month I attended one of his Context nights – a dubsession by Loefah and Skream, on one of their earliest forays outside the Capital – and experienced for myself the sheer physical impact of dubstep at soundsystem volume. But even that was just a hint of what was to come. In April, Subloaded II sent a subsonic shockwave through the city, as Bristol shuddered under the weight of DMZ’s bass meditations. Those who survived the onslaught were changed forever, and Bristol’s destiny as dubstep’s second city became assured.

May 2005 saw the debut release on Pinch’s Tectonic imprint, which was the first of many new dubstep labels to emerge from the city. Being so much smaller than London, Bristol’s new generation of bedroom DJs and producers mingled freely in a close-knit community centred around the Rooted Records shop and the new club spaces (Dubloaded, Sub- loaded, Ruffnek Diskotek, Noir, HENCH) which sprang-up over the following months to cater for this rapidly expanding scene. Beats and ideas were eagerly exchanged on freshly-burned cd-rs in a period of unprecedented communal activity and cooperation, which would ultimately draw in and re-energise many of the city’s older generation of bass-explorers. Indeed, Bristol’s historical association with bass-orientated music was a crucial factor in the formation of a distinct and cohesive sound that triggered a feedback-loop of influence back to both London and the world beyond.

Almost inevitably, the Bristol micro-scene outgrew it’s grassroots, as producer-DJs like Headhunter, Appleblim, Joker, RSD, Pinch and Peverelist soon found themselves playing venues all over the planet. Once again, the ‘Bristol Sound’ had become an international phenomenon. Yet even today the core community still comes together for the regular mid- week Dubloaded sessions, which remain a testament to this city’s unshakable sense of strength and solidarity, as SGT. Pokes (the Honorary Bristolian who led the first charge at Subloaded all those years ago) calls the monthly congrega- tion to prayer.

Coming from the musical melting pot that is Bristol England Orphan101’s Blend of four to the floor Dubstep and Techno have brought him fast acclaim and attention of genre impresarios like Appleblim (Apple Pips / Skull Disco), Headhunter (Tempa), Jus Wan (Apple Pips), DJ Pinch (Tectonic) and RSD (Punch Drunk Records) to name but a few.

His wide range of musical tastes have certainly shone through in his productions with labels such as Appleblim’s highly regarded Apple Pips label, British based alternative label Saigon Recordings and Deca Rhythm already signing tracks from him, all due for release in 2010 making this a very busy year for Orphan101.

His live DJ sets have gained a reputation on radio and in clubs as a new diverse sound with little or no boundaries to what he will play. His sets do not sound out of place whether it be minimal house, techno or dubstep This approach has recently earned him a residency in Berlin, Bristol and also Apple Pips nights across Europe.

His current production collaborations include Headhunter, Bloodman Appleblim and Gatekeeper to name just a few, with remix work being picked carefully to fit with his own production roster.

Teaming up with Appleblim for remix work has resulted in stunning reworks of artists as varied as Bonobo, Brendon Moeller, and Harmonia & Brian Eno, for labels such as Ninja Tune, Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, & Will Saul’s Aus Music.

In fact after Komonazmuk & Appleblim remixed Lee Jones & Nick Hoppner’s My My project for Aus Music, Lee Jones returned the musical favour with this stunning deeper than deep house rework of Dance Too…

With the success of our last releases getting props and plays from DJs as diverse as Erol Alkan, DJ T, Martyn, Deetron, & Rob Da Bank we are really excited to present our next slice of futuristic funk for your ears and booty from the extremely talented Joe.

With his debut, the awesome ‘Grimelight’, being released on Hessle Audio, Joe is part of a loose group of likeminded and future-thinking producers & DJs that includes Hessle Audio’s Ramadanman, Ben UFO, & Pangaea, and Untold & James Blake. Whilst they all have very individual sounds, they share a vision of dubstep, uk funky, techno & house influenced beats that seem to defy genre.

The A-side ‘Untitled’ is a huge stepping wad of funk, bringing to mind 2-step, early Skream & Benga, even stripped down grime classics like Pulse X, but with a truly contemporary twist. This tune drops hard, and has been a secret weapon of Appleblim’s for some time now – he was pleasantly surprised to see ravers of all ages go mad to it!

The flip sees Joe’s more experimental leanings come out on ‘Digest’, but he never forgets the groove and funk. With rolling percussion, steppy sub bass and shiny analogue synth stabs cutting through, it seems to us like a mixture of Mala from Digital Mystikz and Theo Parrish! High praise indeed…

After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. A pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle. “Autumn Drops” is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. Full of melancholy, icy vibes and a subtle basslinethat gets right under your skin, this track is a firm favourite for this year

Two massive productions from top class engineer Apex, as he makes his highly anticipated return to the LIfted Music release schedule. Apex’ debut solo 12″ on Lifted Music is fronted by the now infamous ‘Entrapment’. A groovy live bass guitar accompanies a downright quirky melody, all blended beautifully through that trademark Apex engineering. BLUSYNC002 Sampler 2 Sync: Saphir LP – Electrosoul System / Bionic1 Blu Saphir 12″ Vinyl

For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1′s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!

A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!

B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. The A side, ‘Swagga’, was a feature in Excision’s DJ sets on his recent UK tour as sweaty crowds of teenagers rushed the decks shouting “Play Swagga!” in anticipation of its filthy bassline combinations (we kid you not, we feared for our lives…). EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.

The unsung king of UK soul returns with third installment in his popular Black Pocket series. This release is the sampler before the eagerly anticipated album. “Boungie” finds Steve showing his full vocal range with a slice of falsetto soul laid over a cracked beat of Fela fueled funk. The flip finds D-Bridge going to work on “Reverible Top“, a track that was initially to be found on Steve’s “Space Shift” album. After holding down the controls since 1989 Eastside label head A Sides consistently tours the globe laying down sets in over 40 different countries worldwide. He still manages to find time to lock himself away in the studio and keep his creative output Consistently flowing. This release is a fine example and is the first in a series of A Sides releases leading up to the release of his up and coming second solo album due to hit the streets this winter. We set things off here with the dub inspired “Cheeba” which moves neatly with it’s percussive groove wrapped with a deep bouncy sub line, original step and sound clash style stabs to compliment creating a big dancehall vibe. Strictly for the head nodders! On the flip you will find “One Love” which is aimed purely at the floor. Plain and to the point the beats shuffle nicely why the bass stays minimal punching through the mix. Things get deep midway with old school style bleeps and dub style vocals as the beats roll on. BRIG013 The Greatest Thing – D Kay & DJ Lee Brigand Music 12″ Vinyl

We would be lying if we said we weren’t a bit bias when it comes to all things D.Kay, so it should likely come as no shock or surprise that when asked the question ‘Do you think D.Kay’s newest 12” out on Brigand is a hit?” the answer that we have no choice to reply with is a resounding YES! The deep, low end bass of ‘The Greatest Thing’, with DJ Lee, has just enough grit to it rock the damncefloor as welll as Radio 1. The percussion on this one gets an A+ for sure, with an honorable mention going to the double claps. Lastly, a half time breakdown always does a track good, and this one is without a doubt no exception. Raw.full joins D.Kay on ‘Sequential Circuit’ but this one is a 180 of the flip – tearing amens, hard hitting bass make this one an amen smasher – and it’s this tracks completely different direction that make not only it, but this 12” in general, solid all around. D.Kay does a great job at bringing it rough. Fact.

Appleblim first met Ramadanman and Deapoh (of Barefiles.com) at FWD>>, DMZ and various other dubstep nights when they were barely old enough to get into the clubs. Blim picked up Ramadanman’s debut release on Deapoh’s Bare Dubs imprint and started spreading it across dancefloors in a healthy pasting. A friendship was struck up. And when we first heard ‘Humber’ we were floored; the phasing synths, rolling riddim and deep subs summed up everything we love at Apple Pips. This boy is on fire at the moment with house, funky, drum n bass and dubstep all getting the Ramadizzle touch. EX7001 Yin Yang – Excision Ft. DZ EX7 12″ Vinyl
No doubt the majority of you will have already heard of Excision, one of the leading lights of the North American dubstep scene. His studio mixes have received over 60,000 downloads from one file sharing site alone, while his Rottun Recordings label regularly tops the sales charts, stacking up thousands of sales for each release on Beatport alone! Recently his official remix of Pendulum’s ‘Showdown’ brought the sound of filthy dubstep to the masses and has clocked up over 120,000 plays on the band’s Myspace page. Meanwhile DJs such as BBC 1Xtra’s Mistajam have been all over his signature sound. With so much attention from clubland and the media alike, Excision thought it was time to start a new imprint, geared to release the very biggest of the tracks in his record box. Teaming up with Infectious PR who will be managing and promoting the label on his behalf, Excision is ready to kick off EX7 (pronounced Ex-Seven, for those not in the know) with a pair of downright bangers. ‘Yin Yang’ featuring DZ is straight up LFO based dubstep at it’s finest. Featuring an ambient intro that lulls you into a false sense of security before smacking you round the face with a bassline so big it could be seen from space (that’s a ridiculous thing to say, don’t think we don’t know how ludicrous our own press releases sound). This track is also rumoured to appear on Snoop Dogg’s forthcoming ‘Dubstep LA’ mixtape, so watch out for some serious commercial crossover business. Flip over and ‘Obvious’ takes a surprisingly less obvious approach than you might think. Drawing out electro influences and blending them expertly with Excision’s unique hard-hitting style ‘Obvious’ is packed with energy for the dance floor but with plenty to keep you interested at home. Anyone who likes to mix up electro with dubstep should be slipping this into their sets.

Sickness from Goth-Trad on Mala’s label, with perhaps his best twelve to date. ‘Dark Path’ on the A is an exercise in dub technology, thick slabs of bass overlaid with eastern melodies and mad FX. Percussion and snares are treated with heavy delays, pinging around like auditory hallucinations, building a framework upon which to hang the wistful chords and gentle flute topline. Very limited edition Finish copy. Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing. ONUDP53 Excercising – Lee Perry Vs Horsepower Productions On-U Sound 12″ Vinyl
After the Moody Boyz epic dubstep fix of ‘God Smiled’, the dancehall tune-up of ‘International Broadcaster’, and Kode 9’s funky style workout on ‘Yellow Tongue’, this latest episode in the Lee Perry bespoke remix series adds yet another twist to the musical path, with a hair-raising interpretation from Horsepower Productions. Seeping into halflight zones of bruised ambient dub, over the course of six minutes ‘Exercising’ builds like a distant tropical storm, it’s dense clouds gathering ominously on the horizon while Lee Perry’s shamanic spiritual abstractions add to the sense of heavy weather ahead. Built from similar strands of the low end gene pool as Kode 9 & The Spaceape’s ‘Sine Of The Times’, Horsepower’s brooding view of ‘Exercising’ discards dubstep’s recognised rhythmic frameworks in favour of a largely beat-free excursion, relying instead on swelling subs and oscillating bassline pulses for it’s unstoppable low tempo momentum. Tapping congas, echoing woodblocks and skeletal skittering noises dart insect-like across the mix, while the droning tabla and reverbed melodic guitar figures of Adrian Sherwood’s original production maintain an air of dread occidental mystery. With an equally massive no-vocal take on the flip, this is a simultaneously skin-chilling and oppressively close body heat raising journey to the heart of darkness, and yet another must-have release from the ever mighty On-U Sound.
