NCQL annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of “The Framed Dreams Of Loki”. The track nods to DJ Premier, Prefuse 73 and classic Metalheadz D&B Hidden Agenda style and there’s a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. It sounds like a mess – it’s anything but ! This is uplifting breakbeat at it’s very best. It’s not often a tune gets played twice by Bailey on his BBC 1Xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. The flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. A strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a Drum & Bass track these days but refreshing to hear. DJ Flight thought so and has aired it on one of her “Next Chapter” Rinse FM broadcasts.

Following the huge success of xxxy’s summer anthem ‘Open Your Eyes’, Orca Recordings is back to deliver its highly anticipated fifth instalment; which sees Canadian born artist XI return to the label for his third release on the label. With his new outing on Orca, XI’s musical style has evolved considerably to incorporate a whole new set of influences and ideas. This bold move coincides with his imminent arrival in Berlin, which leads us to proudly announce that the productions set for release in the Orca series are ‘Immunity’ and ‘Squeeze’. ‘Immunity’ sees XI venture into new sonic territory, dropping the bpm to a tempo usually applied to house & techno, but this track keeps all the swing and swagger of the finest UK garage record. This combined with XI’s trademark palette of sonic textures, vocal edits and a nod to the haziest of west coast hip-hop has created a deeply original composition with a unique vibe. On the flip, ‘Squeeze’ is another experiment into this freshly styled structure that XI has created, but with the dance floor more in mind. The introduction breeds tension as the drums roll from side to side, before a patterned vocal stab is brought in to focus the main body of the composition. Both of these productions are a clear indication of XI’s creative flair and taste for new sounds. Allowing this to develop has been the primary focus of Orca and this ethos is now starting to pay dividends to all fans of the Orca Recordings catalogue.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. If you like you tunes big fat and heavy like an elephant on steroids, then get ready for an absolute pasting from new boy on the circuit, Depone! Depone is a producer that has really caught our ear at the Z Audio towers of late and when you hear these tunes, I’m sure you’ll understand why. All 3 tunes are fierce, dirty, gritty, disgusting and overall very well produced. The great thing about Depone is that he manages to create in your face music without pointlessly wobbling the LFO filter. There’s some real depth to this young talent and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some more great music from Depone in the very near future.
