New D&B CD

SUBTLE004CD – Various – Subtle Audio Vol II (3XCD) – CD x 3
3X CD– two are unmixed and crammed with 26 tracks of varying shapes and styles, the other is a mix up of Subtle Audio releases past, present and future by label head honcho Code. CD’s 1 & 2 feature well established artists alongside others who are just beginning to make a name for themselves. Each artist / production team contributes two tracks, giving them extra breadth to showcase different styles and moods. Reinforced Records veteran Alpha Omega (aka Nubian Minds) goes uptempo and atmospheric with “Impulse” and downtempo and quirky with “Highway Cruising”. Sileni, of Planet Mu fame, supplies the beat-less intro for the album and also a collage of pitched snares and seething hiss on “Real Horrorshow”. France’s Naibu has made waves over the last few years with a series of quality releases (including his self titled debut album) and he continues to strengthen his reputation here with a unique soundscape produced for a short animated film, aswell as a finely honed piece of breakbeat called “Nightscape”. Dissident also had a highly acclaimed album release recently, under his Kontext alias (which he uses for his work outside of D&B). Here we get both sides of coin with the jerky original version of Kontext’s “Thaw” on Disc 1 and a kick driven D&B remix by Dissident on Disc 2. Another artist in the limelight presently is Austria’s Sub – he follows his recent Subtle Audio vinyl excursion with the live jazz sound of “Sensualism” and the dark, half-step sound of “Katana”. DSP spices things up with two collaborative efforts. “Lyrica Haze” resulted from a studio session with scene legend DJ Trax and check out his hook-up with recent Rephlex signing Macc for some interesting breakbeat flexing and a mysterious atmosphere. Also featured are (relatively) new names such as Mindmapper, Fre4knc, Nic TVG, San.Dra, Earl Grey, Parallel, CJ Weaver, Indidjinous and The Blunt Needles / Enjoy. For the mix CD 3, Code has pieced together a fluid mix of Subtle Audio material past, present and future. This is certainly one of the deepest mixes you’ll hear this year, a real journey full of everything from old old funk breaks and glitch-ifed beats to trippy synthesisers and moody jazz mixed with great fluidity.

NONVOGUE002 – The Upbeats Ft. Noisia / The Upbeats Ft. Malindi – Creep Out / The Bends – 12″ Vinyl
Re-Released after one year out of press!!. This 12” is a serious throttle to the senses, commanding dancefloors around the world to stand to attention. Sometimes aggy, sometimes deep, sometimes just down right dirty. The scientific sinister element burns bright alongside the rewinds of the masses. Deeply shadowy future tek drum’n’bass using a relentless and complex collection of upfront dark beats and moody soundscapes to encase the ears and get the dancefloor ready to strike. Massive 12” from the leaders of the Nu School.

AUX002 – ASC – Certainties EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following up from the ground breaking genre-defying first 12”, in this second release from Auxiliary, ASC offers up four tracks hand-picked from a selection crafted during the development of his Nothing Is Certain LP on NonPlus+. Four tracks which couldn’t be included on the album due to space constraints find a perfect home on Auxiliary as part of the aptly titled Certainties EP. Up first we have Reality Check, immediately showing an impressive hand of skillfully constructed loops, interjected with metallic stabs over a constant, numbing bass. Developing atmospheres is one of ASC’s key strengths and this track does not disappoint, with a sound that effortlessly evokes the more melancholic brand of sci-fi movie. “Everything around me became suddenly unreal” we hear a voice say; fitting for such an engulfing piece of music. Spectrum provides an alternative feel with a less intense, more electro-inspired motif which handles the trademark minimal Autonomic sound so confidently that ASC virtually ignores the need for that “beat” we might usually expect to hear. Kicks, hats and FX constantly overlap each other, quietly providing an immaculate structure you won’t even notice unfolding. Blips and pops take center stage on Metronomic, a remarkably unique composition chock-full of videogame-style snippets and noises which on their own may have appeared unusable to most but in ASC’s hands somehow come across strikingly well in the mix, ebbing and flowing at an appropriately mechanical pace. Finally, Autoreceptor delves back into that classic atmospheric, Blade Runner-esque sound-set ASC’s listeners keep coming back for. A succession of earthy kick drums from the outset somehow resist the temptation to take over proceedings and instead lead us on a calming journey punctuated by thoughtful strings and synths, with a sparsely-used vocal sample to die for. Stunning.DJ Support from: Instra:mental, dBridge, Doc Scott, Loxy, Flight, Blu Mar Ten, Sabre, Rockwell, Consequence, Geiom, Presha, Alley Cat and of course, ASC.

SUBTLE004EP – Various – Subtle Audio Vol II – 12″ Vinyl x 2
This is the second compilation album from Ireland’s ever inventive Subtle Audio label. With Dj’s as diverse as Mary Anne Hobbs of BBC Radio 1, Bailey on BBC Radio 1Xtra and possibly the best-known name in electronica, Aphex Twin playing Subtle Audio material regularly, you can rest assured that this is Drum & Bass beyond the normal scope and will be enjoyed by many who thought they didn’t like that style of music! The Vinyl side of the project holds 5 exclusive tracks. On disc 1, Requiem kicks things off in style with heavy hitting drum onslaught of “Ancient Dub” while on the flip-side the sweet ambient breakbeat of Accidental Style’s “Space Funkt” is one of the most delicately delivered pieces of music you’ll hear this year. Disc 2 takes in the soaring synths of Mecca’s “Virtual Affair”, the ratchet and wrench inspired percussives of “Janne” by Dan Habarnam and a 170 bpm VIP version of Sub’s downtempo jazz offering on the CD version of this release – “Sensualism”. As you will hear, these producers are bringing fresh ideas and an experimental ethos to the sound of Drum & Bass. We’re looking forward to hearing what they come up with next! Watch this space.

NOMIC004 – Instra:mental / dBridge – From The Start / Detuned Heart – 12″ Vinyl
After recent releases from Riya and Distance, we return to Autonomic founders dBridge and Instra:mental to provide 004 and give us another slice of “Autonomia” or whatever you may like to call it. ‘From the start’ This is Instra:mental doing what they do best in their unique style which many have tried to copy but never seem to quite achieve. Their elegant mixtures of analogue drum machines, synth’s and effects are rife in this track, shaped into melodies, sequences and patterns that are so distinctive to their sound there’s really no need to try and explain it. That said it is by no means predictable apart from the quality which is as always controlled.AA) dBridge – Detuned Heart dBridge has been pushing his production boundries further and further over the last year acknowledging his influences within his productions and in turn influencing others. ‘Detuned Heart’ is a good example of Autonomics purpose of being an outlet focused on straying from the beaten track and discovering new territories. dBridge uses his characteristic moody chords and beautiful melodies to create this piece that like the A side, couldn’t really be achieved by or confused with anyone else.

DMND001 – BTK – Things I Do / Things I Do (Spectrasoul Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Brazil has turned out some of the world’s greatest D&B ever since DJ Marky was discovered by Bryan G and his V Recordings camp. From Marky XRS and Patife to one of Brazil’s other great D&B talents, BTK, you know that you’re always getting quality music with something special injected into it. Drawing from his love of Metalheadz and classic drum & bass, BTK lends ‘Things I Do’ a nostalgic feel that’s undoubtedly going to get dancefloors fired up, but has a refinement and class that comes with maturity. Shogun warriors Spectrasoul step up for remix duty on the flip, taking BTK’s original and smoothing it out to its very barest elements. It’s a mystery how Spectrasoul manage to make a few minimal parts fit and move together effortlessly, but this remix is further proof that they’re on top of their game. This is the first release of many from the brand new Swiss label Demand Records. To throw in a junglist cliche – don’t sleep!Support from DJ Lee, John B, Simon Bassline Smith, Nicky Blackmarket, Flight, Storm, to name a few..

TRIM020 – Inside Info – Bit Rhythm EP – 12″ Vinyl
There are many rumours circulating the Internet about Inside Info, most are false. However, one of the ones that is true is that this man makes some of the most technically ridiculous, and powerful music known to man (this claim has not yet been subjected to independent study). He grew up with the pirate radio stations and the early sounds of hardcore and proto-jungle. Although you could put him into the technoid subfolder of Drum and Bass, the exciting thing about his productions is the different influences you can find. Combining this with the depth of his sound design and the complex arrangements saves him a place amongst the most innovative Drum and Bass producers around.

SHB010 – Panic Girl – Panic Girl Remixes – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. For over six years, shadybrain is forcing innovation in Drum and Bass. With it’s 10th vinyl this is made clear more than ever. ‘The Panic Girl Remixes’ join various high profile artists who have never been combined on a release before: dBridge, Phace, Duo Infernale, Skyence, as well as newcomer Sone. The base for all their remixes was Panic Girl’s ‘Burn And Rise EP’, a trip-hop release which was published on shadybrain in early 2010. Phace gets the EP going with his trademark machine-funk sound twisting up the title track ‘Burn And Rise’, while Duo Infernale burn a deep but dancefloor oriented fireworks of Panic Girl’s ‘Hide And Seek’. dBridge himself then extracts the essence of ‘Blue Lights’, taking the listener to a place dark as eternal night. The release is completed by two non Drum and Bass tunes by Skyence and Sone, the first one delivering finest electronica with a wonky groove, while Sone is unleashing a monster of mashed up Dubstep.DJ Support from: Pendulum, Doc Scott, dBridge, Noisia, Phace, DJ Flight, Loxy, Klute,C4C, Kasra, Cern, Misanthrop, Counterstrike, and many more..’

He gained popularity after releasing a series of vinyl singles on Dubbed Out records (UK) in 2008. First track on the record “Kali” resembles orient vibe from Radikal Guru’s first release “The East-West Connection”, but this time in the form of heavy, deep dubstep. “Champion Sound” on the flip brings back Radical’s classic style – union of roots reggae, dub and dubstep. Closing act of this EP – “This Applies”- is brought to us by Cian Finn on vocals, known from Irish band Intinn. Between broken beats and low bass you will definitely fell the smoke…Sensi style!

The third release from Anti Social’s Cloqworq Records brings a spectrum of melodic and bass-driven productions to make this an all round must have for all serious Dubsteppers.Sukh Knight is the man of the moment with his most recent ‘Slang Like This’ which has topped the Radio 1 playlist for many months. IDLE005 – Kowton – She Don’t Jack / Drunk On Sunday2.90 – 12″ Vinyl
Taking the low end tradition of Bristol music and marrying it to a murky, swung 4/4 aesthetic, Kowton returns to Idle Hands after the claustrophobic paranoia of his ‘Basic Music Knowledge’ / ‘Hunger’ set. She Don’t Jack creeps into life with industrial textures before crisp, rigidclaps and shuffled hits skip energetically around a bassline malevolent in its simplicity. Drunk On Sunday works drum machine grooves from the off, heading down a stripped-bare corridor of pitch-black house. Fearsome bass swells enter the mix while metallic hits bolster the percussion. Fast becoming one of the leading lights in the wilder realms of UK house and techno, Kowton once again demonstrates his arcane production skills with devastating results.

SFS003 – Distal & HxdB / Mayhem & Distal – Typewriter Tune VIP / Frozen Barnacles – 12″ Vinyl
Surefire Sound’s third release features three up-and-coming producers from two points on the map: Distal and Mayhem hailing from Atlanta, Georgia and HxdB from Vancouver, Canada.Collaborating together, this trio brings together a pair of innovative tracks that exemplify the exciting future of dubstep and bass music in 2011.Leading off the release is Michael Rathbun a.k.a. Distal, a rising star in the next wave of bass music producers and founding member of Atlanta Dubstep, a collective that has been introducing dubstep’s top artists to the southeast United States since 2007. Through their events and newly founded label Embassy Recordings, Distal has established his own dynamic that integrates dubstep with Chicago’s juke sounds, and has started to make quite an impression on the global scene with a release on Soul Jazz’s Future Bass compilation, as well as Amsterdam’s Tube 10 Recordings, among others.Collaborating with Distal on the A side is Severine Erickson, a.k.a. HxdB (short for Hexadecibel). Channeling his creative energies from his own pocket of North America, HxdB has been a hardworking DJ, producer, and promoter of the more sophisticated angles of bass music. With several 12” releases to his name on labels such as Mindset and Echodub, and plenty more coming in the new year, he is ready to make his mark on this release alongside Distal with “Typewriter Tune”. Its’ potent assault of shuffling beats and funk-infused pitchwarped synths was so well-received by their DJ mates that they amped up the energy into a VIP version with support from the likes of Bok Bok (Night Slugs, London), Dave Q (Dub War, NYC), Sepalcure (Hotflush), and many more.Working with Distal on the flipside is Anthony Rotella a.k.a. Mayhem, a long-time stalwart of the Atlanta scene coming from notable acclaim in the drum & bass arena. With recent dubstep releases on San Francisco’s Argon Records and Amsterdam’s Subway Recordings, Mayhem is clearly a producer with multiple talents. On “Frozen Barnacles”, they deliver a high-energy, yet heady half-stepper with warm filtered synths and dub-wise horns.

EI015 – Evol Intent – Paradize City / Reality Check – 12″ Vinyl
Coming heavy out the gates for 2011 is Evol Intent’s ‘Paradize City.’ Recently rattling bassbins with dubstep remixes of Wu Tang Clan and Larry Tee, ‘Paradize City’ marks Evol Intent’s first original dubstep release since their 2008 LP, ‘Era Of Diversion.’ Echoing back to classic Evol Intent tunes such as ‘Street Knowledge,’ ‘Paradize City’ hits hard right off the bat with gangsta vocal samples and synth leads that bring you back to the golden era of west coast hiphop before slamming into some grimey bass that would slap a stank face on the most discerning brosteppers. This is definitely not one to miss!On the flipside is newcomer J.Rabbit’s remix of Evol Intent and Ewun’s ‘Reality Check.’ J.Rabbit is no stranger to the dubstep scene, having had several tunes chart in the Beatport dubstep Top 10 charts. This remix is a massive dubstep take on original drum and bass favorite and not one to be missed. For the uninitiated, Evol Intent is often referred to as the leading group in American drum and bass. Evol Intent released it’s landmark LP “Era Of Diversion” to critical acclaim in the Spring of 2008, which explored more diverse musical styles as well as the usual DNB dancefloor smashers. The various members of Evol Intent also has other projects much of the music community should be used to: from Knick’s mash-up collaborations with Ewun (aka Kill The Noise) as ‘Ludachrist’ to the Enemy’s discofunk alter ego ‘Treasure Fingers’ to Gigantor’s housey waveform warping as ‘Computer Club’.

2756220 – Alex Clare – Up All Night (SBTRKT Remixes) – 10″ Vinyl
Limited supply. Sbtrkt turns UK singer Alex Clare’s song “Up All Night” into something sinister. Diplo and Switch produced the original and it’s a smoky tune, now remixed 100% for clubs. And at about 1:40, it shakes off its Clare remix suit and turns into an alien and launches into a different stratosphere
