The Deep Soul Music mission of releasing high quality drum & bass continues with this the 17th vinyl release. Australian Nether has already graced DSM twice with the laid back grooves of ‘Lust’, which featured on the ‘Intelligent Systems Volume One EP’, and ‘Skeletons’, which was included in the exclusive DSM x Lacoste project. With Marcus Intalex on remix duties for the AA side, this is one very special slice of wax. This 12” is an important milestone for DSM. It lays down a marker and is a signal of intent that Deep Soul Music is no longer a fledgling label fighting to gain recognition and acceptance within drum & bass. Rather, it has grown to be one of d&b’s leading lights, one of the most respected labels within the global scene, and a point of reference and inspiration for the multitude of other dj’s, producers and labels currently operating in the genre. With their place at drum & bass’s top table now secure, and with a close working relationship developed with a group of exceptionally talented artists such as Anile, Sam KDC,Synth Sense, Triad and June Miller, the only way for DSM is up. If you’re into a bit of Dubstep with a Jazzy twist, then I’m sure Lewis B is a name that you’re very familiar with. It’s a style of Dubstep that is really taking shape and Lewis is riding that ever increasing moment that surrounds this beautiful sound. Lewis has such a deep knowledge of Jazz, ranging from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery, all the way to the more modern twist on Jazz, like Jazzanova and Quantic. “Dark Clouds” screams out Lewis B and reminds me a little of “Pinball”, but in so many ways extremely different and unique. Then we have Synkro on the remix duties, but a first for Smokin Sessions, it’s a D+B remix!!!! The sound seems to amalgamate genres where BPM are merely a speed, but has a definite distinct flavor. It has been a whirlwind year for XI, with the success of ‘The Ghost’ on Orca capturing the attention of many of the scene’s tastemakers including Mary Anne Hobbs, Loefah and many others. With his new outing on Orca, XI’s musical style has evolved considerably to incorporate a whole new set of influences and ideas. Having been part of the sound design team for Scion’s latest advertisement campaign and toured extensively through North America, we’re proud to announce that the tracks to be released in the Orca series are ‘Gamma Rain’ and ‘Medicate’. ‘Gamma Rain’ is arguably XI’s boldest attempt at production so far, drawing influence from synth-heavy Crunk music and the experimental nature of Jazz. Outboxx are made up of Jacob Martin and Matt Lambert, and their sound is rooted in groovy, analogue house music. And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one.Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain.Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. Iberian records comes out of a hibernation period with the a series of “Tax Haven” EPs. This first EP comes from a group of producers located in the Barcelona bass enclave and who have been some of the main players in the monthly B.LOW events there. Dedicated to what the label describes as Bass’n'Groove, this EP contains three varied and original sounding tunes with different Bpms suited to the leftfield of various bass music fields (dubstep/funky/future garage etc). First up sees Mr. Gasparov’s “Transient Love” come in the guise of a house influenced little gem of a tune featuring Japanese vocalist G.Rina (who has previosly worked with RSD and Nicolette) who cooes and whispers about transient lovers. Those of you already aquainted with Mr. Gasparov with his release on Soul Jazz Records “Steppas Delight 2″ compilation will recognize the attention to subtle melodic play. There is an overall summery vibe coming here – so something to warm us all up with and make us look ahead to brighter days. Accompany with a mojito and some afternoon sun!Next up sees Nehuen’s “Between Love and Hate” which is a tense stripped down bass’n'beat workout with a persistant bass riff and schizoid strings bringing the darkness. Nehuen is an artist that usually getting support from Dusk + Blackdowns Rinse radio show. There is a grimy and ruff feel here not to dissimilar to some Soulja releases from back in the day. Tuff steppas gear.On the 45rpm flip side Relocate come with their trademark relentness sub bass boogie on “Soul Survivor”. Opening with live drum rolls and low end throbs the tune drops into a driving heads down rhythm, laced with swinging ruff arse beats and a frustrated female vocal hook on the drop – “That I just came…” After which the rhythm section pounds away trying to please her! This is a souped up turbo garage workout pimped for the floor and primed for the bassbins.

RWINA011 – Swindle – Playground – 12″ Vinyl
London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown?On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions.The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue  synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Planet Mu up the game once more with their footwork crusade in 2011 with this excellent EP from one of the scene’s top producers, DJ Spinn, showing off his versatile styles across six tracks. ‘Man I Do It’ is also joint release with Chrissy Murderbot’s Loose Squares label, marking the start of a new Chicago-based but internationally-minded imprint dedicated to forward-facing footwork, jit and juke-house sounds. A footwork originator, Spinn started off as a dancer for the House-O-Matics crew in the mid-90s before following with DJing and production, working up to his current status as one of the scene’s most impor-tant figures. The EP mixes styles and sample sources to create a listenable but frenetic blend of tracks, from the more classic chanting juke of ‘Fall Back’, to the futuristic hip hop infused tracks like ‘Studio’ with its shimmering R&B sample and keys that remind the listener of classic jungle, to the off-key synths and vocoder of ‘Man I Do It’, which repeats and loops vocal phrases.The EP also includes the strangely relaxed ‘I Really Feel’, which subtly builds emotional soul strings and looped vocal samples into a barely-there melody, while ‘U Don’t Need’ and ‘Lol’ chop up 70s soul ballads into jagged, cubist shapes.

A two tracker of freshness from Boxcutter, aka Barry Lynn, a questing producer who was taking stylistic chances and constantly mutating his dubstep-based music, long before anyone thought it was time to start discussing “post-dubstep”. This single precedes his new album ‘The Dissolve’, due out in April. ‘Allele’ builds from echoey drums into a tight juke-influenced drum pattern with lots of tight edits, before adding a vocal that hints at old school hardcore, wavering chords and drops, before the whole thing finally resolves into a restrained but ravey breakbeat. ‘Other People’ simply but effectively mixes hazy, live sounding 2-step drums with a lush bitter-sweet melody reminicent of the Drexciya offshoot TheOtherPeoplePlace, which glides subtly through a back-ground of shimmering effects and delays.

And yet again we see him pushing his sonic manifesto ever further. With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP.The Timps is Real Electro. Faceless, percussive, underground with a sci-fi feel. Dark, futuristic and dancefloor-oriented, punctuated with elements of 80’s Detroit Techno. Om Unit has blasted his sound into deep space, adding eerie electronic futurism to his niche blend of slow boogie, house, techno and hip-hop beats with those classic analogue synth lines. It nods to both the ever exciting and forever morphing instrumental beat scene and to the heavy flow of early pioneering Detroit techno via UR and the likes of Drexciya/Aux 88. The Timps sees Om Unit interfacing funk and futurism. Analogue bass lines are sequenced, arpeggiated and twisted to devastating effect. Synthetic riffs and atonal sound effects with heavy reverbs, delays and phasers drift along with eerie synthetic strings emphasizing the retro futuristic themes of the music. Remixes come from Frite Nites’ US beat maker and a one-to-watch in 2011, Salva, and Wagon Repair’s Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson who, along with brother, Matthew, is part of North American Techno’s first family. Salva’s rework of Prawn Cocktail pulses and throbs towards its intergalactic destination, with beats that speed along with accelerating urgency. Hrdvsion on the other hand takes The Timps and disconnects completely to float off alone into deep space with his epic, eerie and atomspheric reworking. This is Electro. Real Electro. Moody, minimal and 25 years on.

For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).

Finish copy. 24-year-old Kevin McAuley began making music with a two-track mixer, a keyboard and a tape deck. Discovering dubstep years later via the sounds of Mala in the backroom of a Leeds club in 2005, Kevin was inspired to found the city’s first dubstep night, Ruffage, and launched himself into the studio. Since then, Pangaea has released on labels such as Hotflush and Hessle Audio, as well as remix work for Untold and Commix. Hessle Audio was formed in Leeds in early 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley. The label has released tunes by TRG, Martyn, Pangaea, Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Joe and Untold. In addition, Hessle Audio tunes have appeared on compilations by Tempa, Scape, Soul Jazz and Global Underground. Hessle Audio hold a residency at London club Fabric.

First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape. Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies. Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.

Doms latest album is one of his finest works to date.I n 2005 Dom started his own label Dom & Roland Productions releasing the creme de la creme of Drum and Bass collaborations, as well as being an outlet for his own work. DP034 When I Look At You – Emalkay Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. In all honesty words cannot really give this track any justice, just listen to it yourself and enjoy this masterpiece that Emalkay has unleashed on to the world. An absolutely essential release for any dubstep fan!

Grimy and growling, this is a tune that’s going to tear your immune system to shreds.

The classic TRG release. repressed and Re-released. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Subs bulge beneath the broken 2-step riddim and occasional warping midline, building nicely towards the killer switchups on the second drop.

In collaboration with London’s Sigha, ‘Seperation’ is a pounding atmospheric thumper, silken threads of sound woven around pulsing beats and surgical percussion,expertly designed and constructed to create perpetual forward motion. ‘Lesser People’ is somewhat harder – crisp drums, ticking hats and solid bass drones flying past at supersonic speed as insane tech FX rip the veryair asunder. Limited Edition Purple Vinyl. Scratcha DVA is not just the charismatic host of Rinse Fm’s breakfast show, he’s one of the UK’s most accomplished producers. An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90′s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. More recently Scratcha has collaborated with beacons of the UK Funky scene like Roska, Cooly G, D-Malice and more while still releasing grime anthems like ‘Nasty Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Bullet Ago Fly’. The Jelly Roll Ep has already gained support from Marcus Nasty, Geeneus, Joker, Kode 9, Cooly G, Sinden and more. Built around a super-synthetic bassline its title track sqirms and shakes around stinging snares whilst ‘Guro Triba’ is a little on the more conventional side of House & Funky. Also hot off the press we have news of the next Subtitles album which is set for release at the end of this year, from none other than Chris SU, following on from his string of hits on Subtitles including Solaris and Solaris VIP, it was only natural that he followed this up with an album, bound to feature his signature sound of melodic yet heavy hitting dancefloor anthems.

A few tracks from the album are already doing the rounds, most notably “First Snow” a track that has been an opener for Teebee’s live sets for a while now. Expect the unexpected on this one.
