New D&B Releases

OK022 – Meth & 2Shy – Treatment EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Meth has been working hard from his base in the South of the UK and has been creating a monster to unleash for Offkey Music. His initial solo releases for Offkey brought much attention and dance floor destruction. Quickly people realised that Meth was a force not to be underestimated. This is first full length project and Offkey are very happy to be releasing it. Meth has gathered a stellar cast for The Treatment EP – and that cast extends to 2shy, Manifest & Zo. Let us get treated. a) Meth & 2Shy (feat. Zo) – Front-line 2Shy lays down a vocal that leaves no confusion as to his intent, Meth lays down a killer kick snare and bass combo that brings the dance floor pain like only he knows how. The mysterious Zo slides onto the rhythm and underpins 2Shy’s presence on the track with her spoken word style, putting emphasis on the main hook effortlessly. Bongos bring up the pace on the chorus and before you know it your nodding your head and singing along to the ‘Front-line’. b) Meth, Manifest & 2Shy - RockForte Another artist is introduced to the fold is B-Boy Aficionado Manifest, south London authority on all things hip hop, the friendship with 2Shy has developed over years and now they feature on the knock bass killer ‘Rockforte’. A lilting dub vocal hangs over the breakdown signalling to a drop that just demands to be heard. A mid set roller that features enough edits and twists to keep the floor moving and keeps those gun fingers in the air. Mid bass growls all over the beat encouraging that all important screw face. All together now…. “Too heavyweight, too heavyweight” c) Meth & 2Shy – Not the one This is TRADEMARK 2shy, lets not get it twisted- infact there is no way you could “The bass drops, the place erupts, the crowd shouts FUCK OFF”.  When 2shy gets on a track- this is what you want. Aggravated, unshakeable and uncompromising. and again- just incase you wondered- “FUCK OFF”. Meth and 2shy show again that this may well be an ongoing collaboration- this EP is like a fist to the face, and ‘Not the one’ is the middle finger of said fist. d) Meth – Snake Eyes Meth closes proceedings with menacing Snake Eyes, A perfect title for the sinister track that whips midrange and suffocates you with low end. High hats and cymbals give movement to the drums and add a body move factor that will have the dance floor in eyes down, shock out mode no doubt!

b Meth, Manifest & 2Shy – Rockforte
c Meth & 2Shy – Not The One

GEN175005 – Switch Technique – Did / Exo – 12″ Vinyl
Switch Technique is the first artist to get a solo release on The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. So, what does this mean? It means that he has pulled off that which only very few can manage: he mixed hardcore kickdrums and drum & bass snares into what has become known as crossbreed.. and he made it sound good. DID is a deep dive into the mind of a psychopath, continuously hammered by gutwrenching kickdrum one hundred and seventy-five times per minute. EXO on the flip strips the crossbreed sound down to its bare exoskeleton. Go on, put on the exoskeleton and see for yourself!

RDR002 – Shameboy / Buscemi – Strobot – NETSKY rmx / Seaside – KG rmx – 12″ Vinyl
Murdock’s Radar Records launches an entirely new project, backed by some of the biggest names in drum&bass. Remixing a gang of classic Belgian non-dnb tracks by the likes of T99, Sound of Stereo, The Subs, Outlander and many more, they kick off the series with massive drum&bass reworks by none other than Netsky and KG. Drum & Bass’ new poster boy / boy wonder Netsky steps to the plate with the awesomeness that is his version of Shameboy’s classic electro banger ‘Strobot’, which was the first tune in his BBC Radio1 Essential Mix and has had a lot of exposure worldwide, as his Mix was voted 3rd best Essential Mix of the year 2010! The track has had spins by Andy C, Danny Byrd, Camo & Krooked and many more. KG ripped up Buscemi’s laidback house classic ‘Seaside’ and turned it into a dancefloor stomper. Opening with funky licks and classic breaks, he quickly rolls into a big jump-up monster, while still adding some vocals and rhodes piano for good measure. This one is being caned by Bassline Smith, Hamilton and Zen, to name just a few. Next up in the Radar Remixes series are contributions by Nymfo, Blame, Crystal Clear, Break, Marky & SPY and many more, so keep your eyes and ears pealed!

New D&B Promos

NOMIC006 – ASC – Starkwood / Reform – 12″ Vinyl
How and why these two tracks got pushed so far back in the autonomic release schedule is anyones guess. These two cuts are arguably ASC’s biggest to date (perhaps with the exception of ‘The Touch’), and two tracks that go a long way in defining the early sound of the autonomic movement. Finally they are going to see the light of day however, news that is sure to satisfy the baying hoards of hungry autonomic devotees that have waited so long and so patiently for their release. Starkwood is about dancefloor as Autonomic has ever gotten and probably will ever get – the pounding kick drum, coupled with the rhytmical, shuffling tribal percussion is infectious and guaranteed to get heads nodding and bodies moving. Reform is on a totally different vibe altogether with its breathy vocal snippets and detroit-ish synths giving it a silky, sultry feel.

P51UK022 – Cern – True Talk / Doubledown – 12″ Vinyl
Cern releases the sampler to the forthcoming album ‘Terminus’ on Project 51. Cern describes “Terminus” as “an album that takes its roots from Techstep and funk driven D&B,” going on to say “the album reflects the inspiration gained from his long standing admiration for producers like Ed Rush & Optical, Matrix, Konflict and Source Direct”, incorporating the sound they represented at a time, in his opinion, when Drum & Bass was “at its peak”

DISTURBD024 – Zero Method – Atomizer / Marco Polo – 12″ Vinyl
Are you ready? I say.. ARE YOU READY?!?! Cause it’s time for some disturbance so you’d better get out your blast suits and your bulletproof vests. Zero Method is up for some rolling action with their tunes Atomizer & Marco Polo. Atomizer keeps it steady with perfectly pinpointed hi hats and drums, while the fierce bass line corrodes the foundations. This one packs a giant punch when executed properly, a serious tune for the techy minded people Next up is Marco Polo. This one will take you into the uncharted realms of neuro tech, no cheesy loudness business just straight up drums & basses. A chest rattler like nothing you ever heard before. Let this one teleport you into the deeper layers tech dnb has to offer. Fans of Silent Witness & Break better have checked this one out.

SUBTLE015 – Equinox – Meecha – 12″ Vinyl
Marlon Sterling aka Equinox cements his reputation as one of the D&B scenes most versatile, single-minded and dextrous beat manipulators on his latest in a long catalogue of brain-bending releases. The incendiary opener to a now infamous Equinox & Bailey set at Technicality in 2003 – “Meecha” finally sees the light of day. Originally completed in 1996 on an Amiga computer, the tune has lost none of its appeal 15 years on and it’s all the better for the audible crunch on the amen beats. This is one of the very best tunes from Equinoxs unreleased DAT library, and that’s saying something !! “So many people out here who make different styles of music you know – this music is something that they feel”. The repeated mantra at the opening of the flip side prepares you for an altogether different experience to what went before. Made in 2009 but with a definite nod to the oldskool style, “Your Love’s So Cold” is poignant, heartfelt D&B at its very best. The arrangement deftly builds to a beautiful swell of echoed vocals, icey-atmospherics and rolling beats and bass. Just like the A Side, this one is certain to defy fashions and trends and will be just as moving in 2024.

Hot off the success of his stunning second album ‘Resistance’, Break once again delivers the goods with a stripped back, funk infused, all out groove track. On the flip, we welcome Survival back to the Utopia camp, this time teaming up with Mako to produce the deep, hypnotic tones and rhythms of ‘Freedom from Duality’.

LS010 – Nphonix – Third Eye / False Flag – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Nphonix is celebrated as a paragon of stylistic diversity, constant progression and engineering craftsmanship amongst producers and listeners alike, with a sound and discography spanning everything from drum ‘n bass to hard techno. His latest release on the prestigious Lost Soul imprint is no exception to this standard. The A-side, ‘Third Eye’, descends like the bellow of some unfathomable machine coming to life, as frenetic techno stabs ride a ferocious shockwave of bass driven by bristling percussion. The flip, ‘False Flag,’ beckons with signature lushness and beautiful harmonies before propelling the listener back into a maelstrom of speaker destroying furor, with a stunning second drop sure to blow minds and rattle ribcages. Both pieces are tied together with the gritty yet crystalline production quality fans have come to expect from this stalwart innovator. This record is a testament to an artist’s uncompromising vision and a label’s reputation for impeccable taste.

New Bass Music releases

DP049 – KGB – Ghetto Blasta 2010 / Hands Up – 12″ Vinyl
Estonian duo KGB step up for their debut release on Dub Police and they certainly aren’t pulling any punches. The production partnership hit you with two cuts of pure dance floor energy and impact that display their versatility and uncanny knowledge of how to get a crowd going. If you don’t know about KGB, you better get to know, as they are quickly establishing themselves as one of the rising stars in underground dance music. With plenty of tricks up their sleeves, there will be no stopping them in 2011! ‘Ghetto Blaster 2010’ draws upon different elements of underground bass music and melds them together in to something entirely unique and undeniably infectious. Taking the growling midrange bass-weight of dubstep and wiring it to a militant UK Funky drum march, KGB give the track an unstoppable momentum and punishing impact that is impossible to fight against – With an artillery that includes fire like this, it is no wonder they are quickly paving their path to the top. On the flipside, KGB deliver something very different. Pinned down by the tough half-step drum pattern, ‘Hands Up’ is all about the maniacal intertwining bass lines. When this track drops there is no denying its fierce, in-your-face power.

SUBWAY016 – Matt-U – Watchin U EP – 12″ Vinyl
Now.. We know A LOT of people have been waiting for this one so without further delays we present Matt-U’s highly anticipated ‘Watchin’U EP’ The title track ‘Watchin’U’ has been cained by the likes of Skream, 16Bit, Mensah, Von D, Madd, N-Type, Nicon, Akkachar, Noah D, The Others and who know who else.. Matt-U brings back the Dubstep sound from back in the day and updates it in a way only he can do. Reminding you a lot of the eski grime stuff but also a lot of the older DMZ vibes. A serious riddem in these times and an essential one for in the bag.. Turn the lights off put on your hood and skank out! LIME004 – Jade & Matt-U – Echoes – 12″ Vinyl
Lime Dubz keep on cracking with another too hot to handle release.. The long time duo Jade & Matt-U are reunited once again but not for getting back to their dnb roots. No Jade teams up with Matt-U for some highly technical Dubstep sounds.. Grindhouse on Jade’s Venom LP was just a taster of what was to come.. With Grindhouse still freshly engraved into our memories it’s time to unleash it on vinyl.. But now with 2 brand spanking new heavyweights on there.. Echoes is a sinister roller that’s all over the place bouncing left right up and down there’s no defending against this monster track.. Instead of going all tear out they crossover to a more medi hybrid sound that will suit well with Dubsteppers of all ages.. The last new track on the 12 is Pump. You guys are thinking it.. and we can confirm.. Yes this is a bass line monster if there ever was one. Grab all of your PA’s boys and girls and turn up the volume to max cause its only happening when your chest starts rattlin..

CIV017 – Reso – Valken EP / War Machine – 12″ Vinyl
Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow. Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy. Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.

NONPLUS011 – Lowtec – Wonderkidd / Looser – 12″ Vinyl
The ball is certainly rolling in 2011 and next up is a treat from Germanys Lowtec. Founder of highly respected label Workshop he makes his UK label debut on Nonplus Records with two fresh cuts of analogue goodness. a) Lowtec ‘Wonderkidd’ ‘Wonderkidd’ greets us with a vocal sample that morphs keys with a low-fi piano chord before the discordant groove of the main riff comes into effect. Analogue synths dance around the deep chord groove with early detroitisms flexing between a repeating bleeped out pattern. Hypnotic key stabs sink you deeper into the tune that shows us why Lowtec is one of Berlin’s top underground button pushers. aa) Lowtec ‘Looser’ The warm hiss of anaolgue beats starts off the excellent AA tune ‘Looser’. Dabs of a.m radio vocals progress the tune amongst a myriad of discreet electronic bleeps that escalate and scatter around the rhythm. Coarsely sampled ‘Shakir-like’ string chords provide the main sequence to set off this excellent tune. One for the deeper heads out there.

HF027 – Joy O – Wade In / Jels – 12″ Vinyl
Since the release of his debut “Hyph Mngo” that swept the global dance music world in 2009, British producer Peter O’Grady (aka Orbison) makes his return on Hotflush Recordings as Joy O in 2011. These two productions take a more straightforward approach, toeing along the lines of classic house music, infused with this talented producer’s own signature style, weaving rolling acidic basslines in “Wade In” and uplifting melodies in “Jels” and over shuffling Roland drums and blissful atmospherics.

HENCH023 – MRK1 – Dirty Dubstep Music – 12″ Vinyl
Having been perfecting his production skills for the last 10 years, Mrk 1 is no newcomer to the world of bass-led music. A member of Manchester’s infamous ‘Virus Syndicate’, he’s become internationally recognised as a huge dubstep talent. So when HENCH got the opportunity, they jumped at the chance to sign two typically down-right dark and dirty numbers from the man like Mrk 1… A. DIRTY DUBSTEP MUSIC ‘I want girls, drink, drugs and music’ aren’t the type of lyrics you’re going to find on a Cliff Richard record. And this track is about as far away as you can get from that! Get ready for a relentlessly switching bass rhythm that takes you every which way direction. The vibe on this production is one of darkest dread and fits perfectly at home in a dark & dingy club at some ungodly hour of the morning. Mrk 1 has carefully crafted space around the bass-riff to make sure that nothing takes away from it hitting you where it hurts. AA. SHOUT Mrk 1 guides us in with an innocent facade; a playful vocal coupled with a light-tempoed high hat. But as things draw nearer to the drop the creeping low-end in the background makes it clear that other intentions are in mind. When that twisted bassline drops ‘Shout’ takes on a far more forbidding atmosphere. Mrk 1 has created something that bass-heads have been swinging from the rafters for every time, screaming for the rewind. Take heed of our words when we tell you that ‘Shout’ is going to cause damage!

RS1102 – Blawan – Bohla EP – 12″ Vinyl
R&S welcome another newcomer to the family. With only one release behind him on Hessle Audio and a wicked remix for Warp (The Hundred In The Hands) Blawan finds his new tracks in demand from the likes of James Blake, Jackmaster, Untold, Ben UFO, Ramadanman and Pariah. The title track is already creating a bit of a stir from its inclusion in a few high profile dj sets, but all three tracks raise the game for this young producer. The whole ep is filled with an honest, infectious energy, just like his dj sets. You can’t pigeonhole this as ‘post’ anything, its pure, stripped down, club music. Sometimes drums, bass and acid is all you need.

OTE014 – Indigo – Zero Point E.P. – 12″ Vinyl x 2
On the Edge are back with a new EP from Indigo! He first made his debut for On the Edge early 2009 with a collaboration with Synkro called “Alabama” and “Turning”. Then Indigo went on to produce 2 solo singles for On the Edge 8 and 9 that I would describe as true masterpieces. Dubby, Techno, industrial and gritty to the core! If you haven’t checked any of those releases out, then I would say “Not Alone”, “Home” and “Cosmos” are all well worth a listen. He is one of the most talented producers I have ever heard and extremely diverse in production styles. He never sticks to formulas and his musical knowledge and passion for diversity really shines though in his music. “Zero point” is a mix of wonderfully produced soundscapes that show us what Indigo is all about. DJ Support: Scuba, Russell Deeks , D Bridge , Reso , Spam Chop, DFRNT, Rob Booth Walsh, Dj Rum Distal, Truth.

SMOKE013 – Lewis B – Dark Coulds – 12″ Vinyl
If you’re into a bit of Dubstep with a Jazzy twist, then I’m sure Lewis B is a name that you’re very familiar with. It’s a style of Dubstep that is really taking shape and Lewis is riding that ever increasing moment that surrounds this beautiful sound. Lewis has such a deep knowledge of Jazz, ranging from the likes of Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis and Wes Montgomery, all the way to the more modern twist on Jazz, like Jazzanova and Quantic. “Dark Clouds” screams out Lewis B and reminds me a little of “Pinball”, but in so many ways extremely different and unique. Then we have Synkro on the remix duties, but a first for Smokin Sessions, it’s a D+B remix!!!! The sound seems to amalgamate genres where BPM are merely a speed, but has a definite distinct flavor. I think its such a refreshing sound and love the minimal deepness that the genre brings to electronic music. DJ Support: D Bridge, LTJ Bukem, DFRNT, Dj Rum Reso Loxy, Alexander Nut, 16bit, Pathaan, Tayo, Kissy Sell out, Shimon, Distal, Rob Booth, Freq Nasty, DJ Flight, Nerm (BBC Radio 1) and Akira Kiteshi!

SR013 – JFB ft. Christina Nicola – Rise / Ruffneck Rmx – 12″ Vinyl
JFB, the Brighton-based master turntablist, DMC champion and coordinator (alongside Beardyman) of the legendary Battlejam events returns to Sludge Records with yet another speaker-bustin’ musical onslaught. If you liked Duckjam and his previous collaborations with Ed Solo then this release of full-on phat beats and dub bass pressure will blow your minds, and your eardrums. Main cut ‘Rise’ teases you in with atmospheric tones and eerie pads before the angelic voice of Christina Nicola takes you into a dreamy state of euphoria, only for a big beefy knee-trembling bassline to come crashing in and drag you kicking and screaming into hedonistic oblivion. This is one of those tracks that are designed for those special 4am moments that make you hug speakers and pull bassfaces so intense you’ll end up chewing off your own eyebrows. On the flip is something a bit special for all the skanking soldiers. ‘Ruffneck’ is a track by Elijah MC, a street entertainer from the south of England who uses his beatboxing skills and vocal looping tools to create dub-influenced songs that range from trip hop through to drum ‘n’ bass. The track here is a firing ragga-flavoured dubstep remix from our man JFB and it is H.E.A.V.Y. Showing off his highly accomplished production skills from start to finish, the skippy beats, earthquake-inducing subs and roots-style vocals are perfectly combined to make this one a dead cert for sheer dancefloor devastation, and prove once again why he’s one of the most sought after and entertaining artists on the scene.

New D&B CD

MJAZZLP04 – Various – The Modernists 2 CD – CD
The CD album is strictly limited to 100 hand finished copies, so certainly something for the collectors. Tony Justice’s MJazz label has come good with the second instalment on it’s limited CD series. “The Modernists 2” brings together an international selection of new skool artists laced together with techno and electronic influences… The project boasts several producers who’s names are practically buzz words in contemporary deep drum & bass. “Reklas” by Berlin’s Felix K is a personal favorite of ours, incorporating a relentless white noise-esque snare with deep sub bass and tense stabs. Also deserving a special metion is relative newcomer Dominick Ridgeway’s “My Reflection”, minimal by definition, subtle and cinematic by character. Justice & Metro’s “Sounds Like Something” takes the listener firmly away from the dancefloor and straight into the future dystopia of a city landscape that would be at home in Bladerunner, stripping away the beats and focussing on some seriously synthed out keys and pads.

CF044 – Quadrant – Dermaphoria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. Some producers are just so underrated that it makes you sick. Quadrant is a formation that’s been around since 2005 and has released tracks on prestigious labels like Renegade Hardware, Citrus, Fokuz to name a few. The quality of their output is extraordinarily crisp and original that it’s hard not to notice them, this Dermaphoria EP is exactly that. And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’ State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one. Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain. Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. When this one hits standing still is not an option, the bass line will sweep you of your feet in no time and shoot you into the Dermaphoria Quadrant. 0 Gravity beats and sweeps are coming at you at all sides so you are warned!

DOT004 – Duffstep – Getting to Sirius – CD
Limited edition gapless audio CD. Until now Duffstep has been hidden in the seedy undergrowth of London always disguised, clandestine, covert, forever plotting his imminent escape. This bid for freedom then is called ‘Getting to Sirius’. Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky, in Ancient Greek times Sirius was said to mark the beginning of summer, where women became aroused and men became weak. The gods screamed for glory and the crowd screamed one more. Duffstep’s debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ is a heady potion laced with influences of dub and down tempo beats, winding through layers of melody and synths whilst vocals soften the blow providing a nice, warm and fuzzy edge to the thick slabs of sonic concrete. Though you won’t have to wait before a nice big bass-line knocks you down on your arse again. It’s a migration then from early morning blissful sweeps and sonic washes. It is the soul of rave, it is it’s long dead cousin come back to haunt it. It is the sound rave makes when it re-enters the earth’s atmosphere. It isn’t a simple re-working of what has been showcased in recent live outings, it is more contemplative; unlike his more recent outings it is less aimed at the dance-floor and is instead a more, down-tempo, relaxed affair. Aside from travelling to Sirius on weekends, Duffstep can also be found sharing a stage with some of the biggest names in electronic music, Flying Lotus, Pinch, Martyn, Commix, Ramadanman, Pariah and Kode 9 to name a few. As well as teaming up alongside Rebel Overlay one of the VJ scenes brightest assets, Duffstep has begun touring a massive live show that is set to be unveiled from Timbuktu to Teignmouth. Accompanying the debut LP will be 3 remix EP’s straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes split across both digital and vinyl include re-tellings from FaltyDL, Elliphino and Young Montana? On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold, Loose fit, Social Monster and Duffstep’s Thursday night drag act alter-ego Duff Disco taking things to house and disco dancefloors. With original material, remix EPs, a debut album and an ever growing touring schedule, Duffstep is going to be hard to ignore in 2011.

DISF011 – Instra:mental / Von D & Riskotheque – Voyeur / Like A Bird – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Skream’s label rounds of 2010 with a classic release. Its not often a gem like this comes along and its no surprise that fellow production collaborator Skream picked it up for his Disfigured Dubz imprint. Having been a regular floor filler over the past year within the emerging techno x dubstep scene, ‘Voyeur’ has been in high demand and finally sees the light of day to many peoples delight. It was one of Instra:mentals first dabbles with the 4/4 structure but has the maturity and qualities of a rediscovered 90s classic. Lazy robo beats set the tone for a slurred vocal that sounds like a drunken tourist in a red light district. At the same time, spacey atmospheres build in the background until they reach a peak and fade away into screaming stabs that get the crowd going mental. Expect to hear this for many years to come and could possibly reach classic status. Next up we have the AA side from upcoming artists Von D and Riskotheque. With their jazz/soul fueled take on Dubstep they’re building their own little niche within the scene and are sure to shine this year. ‘Like a bird’ mixes old skool vocal snippets, lurching fizzy mids and Detroit style stabs to create this monster that Skream and his fellow Djs have been rinsing to full effect over the last couple of months. A perfect balance of musical prowess and heavyweight beats and bass, this tune covers all angles nicely.

NONPLUSLP002PART1 – LOL – LOL Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

PIPS014 – Orphan101 – Propa / Disemble – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips is proud to present another original new talent from the Bristol bass underground – Orphan101. Having cut his teeth on Bristol pirate radio with Headhunter aka Addison Groove, Orphan101 surfaced earlier this year with some promising releases on Saigon and his own Decarhythm label, one of several new labels in Bristol (along with If Symptoms Persist, Idle Hands, & Subdepth) to be pushing a varied and seemingly boundary less take on bass music. A residency at the Apple Pips nights in Bristol allowed him to road test his beats and it’s here that Appleblim heard the awesome rolling 2-step-meets-Carl Craig-in-a-Bristol-soundclash track that is ‘Propa’. With skippy garage beats, a bleeped out intro, and the deepest sub-bass this side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, you need to hear this track on a system. It hurts! On the flip ‘Disemble’ takes us on a journey through his vision of minimal techno, in a dubstep context, with scratchy percussion rubbing up against twisted Ed & Optical ‘Wormhole’ era bass spasms. Having just come from playing at Fabric for Apple Pips takeover, things are looking great in 2011 for Orphan101. Early DJ/Radio support already coming from Mark Pritchard (Warp/Harmonic 313/Afrika Hi Tech), Instra:mental (Non-plus/Swamp81), Addison Groove, 2562 (Tectonic), Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina (Tresor) & more

DOT003 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #1 – 12″ Vinyl
Like the joining of ancient clans or the marriage of Marie Antoinette to Louis of France the joining of the Duff brothers is something of a historical milestone. Since birth the Duff’s have gone their separate ways, one getting down on the worlds hipper dancefloors, hips-awiggling, head thrown back in rapture and all under a spinning disco ball. The other brother the troubled teen, hood up, eyes down, bass rumbling, one time selecta. Imagine then two estranged brothers, born from the same seed living awkwardly side by side, never entirely comfortable in each other’s company finally uniting on one massive inbred slab of sonic harmony. If you can imagine that slightly cack-handed analogy then that is pretty much what you get here. After a year of huge edits and original material Duff Disco has finally gone and had a fiddle with his brother? Both taken from the forthcoming Duffstep album ‘Getting To Sirius’, ‘Your Touch’ and ‘Backseat’ are original Duffstep tracks given a cosmic make over by Duff Disco. They are proper modern disco music that sits just the right side of funky, without conjuring images of fluffy boots and spiky hair, white shirts and fake tan. Whilst Backseat is the more euphoric of the two Your Touch is more moody than an emo teenager watching Twighlight. Both obviously Duff Disco but somehow keeping the family together as Duffstep’s finger prints are all over these too.

SPEAKS003 – Sekta – Liquid Tek EP – 12″ Vinyl
No doubt looking for somewhere with a bit of political stability and a brighter economic future, 24 year old Polish producer Jan Dudzik aka Sekta recently joined many of his compatriots by leaving London and farking off back to his native Warsaw. Luckily, he left us a bottle of the finest vodka to remember him by, and a four track EP of stepping rhythms, fat bass and dubby atmospherics to help wash it down. Lead track ‘Liquid Tek’combines deep pads, pulsing subs, metallic riffs and broken beats into a floor friendly, but contemplative post dubstepper. Similar elements are combined in “ I Need’ , with a sliver of vocal adding an extra layer to the musical equation. ‘Hakka Riddim’ takes things a bit heavier, coiling beefy synth stabs around it’s insistent rhythms , and employing a spacey string interlude to break things up along the way. Closing track ‘Deep in the Woods’ takes the trace of D n B textures that run through the EP and lets loose, with full on, chopped up Amen breaks accompanying futuristic pads, robo-synths and occasional flourishes of cinematic strings that hint of Easter European nostalgia.

NOMIC005 – They Live – Pure Palms / Don’t Know What To Say – 12″ Vinyl
The first release for Consequence and Joe Seven’s new alias ‘They Live’ is on dBridge & Instra:mental’s Autonomic label. Creeping in with a slightly haunting melody and sparse drums, ‘Pure Palms’ starts off with little indication of where the track might lead; it feels as though it could go in any direction. As it slowly builds, the warmth and weight – and deep-set rhythms – that Consequence is known for begin settling, and open up to an evocative, widescreen track of immense beauty. They Live’s musicality comes through strong throughout the detailed turnings of the downtempo masterpiece, with immersive low-end fills and intricate percussion that take all headphones hostage. ‘Don’t Know What To Say’ brings a darker edge, with crackling sound effects and an ominous, spine-chilling bassline that creates intense and intriguing dynamics. As a solemn melody builds, once again They Live bring a cinematic feel to the dense, ever-growing atmosphere. Brooding with textured sounds, skyscraping synths and head-nodding beats, the mesmerizing track shows huge promise of what’s to come from the powerful duo.

When In Doubt is his new imprint, aiming to release personal, formula-free music.

RS1006RMX – Model 500 – OFI (Space Dimension Controller & Bullion Remxes) – 12″ Vinyl
Model 500 returned triumphantly to R&S in 2010, with their first release for the label in eleven years, and the first with the new line up of Juan Atkins, Mike Banks and Mark Taylor. They found themselves label mates with some of the finest young electronic producers working in music today, and back on a rejuvenated label that was making the top ten labels of the year lists from the likes of Fact, XLR8R, RA, Juno and Bleep. It makes total sense that the lead track from the OFI ep is handed over to two amazing young producers to reinterpret it in their own unique ways. Bullion made his name with the internet sensation Songs In The Key Of Dee release which blended The Beach Boys and Dilla into a hip hop masterpiece. Recently he’s released the You Drive Me To Plastic ‘non LP’ on Young Turks, which has cemented him as true auteur of the sampler. His rivertrance remix of OFI is simply amazing. How he’s turned the classic Detroit electro of the original into a twisted, psychedelic symphony that laughs in the face of genres, without losing the Model 500 feel, god only knows, but we’re glad he has. Space Dimension Controller returns to the label after releasing his critically acclaimed Temporary Thrillz doublepack. He’s the perfect remixer choice, another space obsessed producer, working on analogue gear and singing on his own tracks like Juan has done since the Cybotron days. SDC replaces Juan’s vocals for his own on his evasive funk mix, keeping the tempo of the original intact, but taking things deeper in his signature style. This single effortly merges the R&S heritage with the forward thinking electronic music of 2011 perfectly, and is a bold statement of intent for the new year.

THIN16 – Funckarma – Dubstoned 5 EP – 12″ Vinyl
As we’ve been stalking the Funckens for ten years now, after stumbling upon their parts series on DUB when we were still students, trekking religiously to the Sirius on weekends, eventually spending nights in bus shelters to assist to half a live in a school that only served wine, and trying to organise a bash with them in a squat that burned down a week before the bash, before finally inviting them to an exhibition closing party that incidentally marked the beginning of Thin Consolation, they seemed an obvious choice for a release for the tenth anniversary of UNREzT and the fifth of Thin Consolation. Having already graced Thin Consolation with an album in 2006 as Dif:use (with long-time partner Cor Bolten), this time we requested from them a 12″ of a more step-ish inspiration, the fifth in the Dubstoned series, the previous editions having been released on Highpoint Lowlive, Ad Noiseam and Eat Concrete. In so many words, the Dubstoned series is the last major electronic musical genre to have appeared – Dubstep – to be given the special Funcken treatment: a dark and brooding, dub-flavoured electronica. Not for the faint hearted. Mepeche is co-produced by Phinx, and Spectrum is a remix of a track by Eedl, released on the album ‘Everse’, on the Barcelona-based label spa.RK.

RWINA011 – Swindle – Playground – 12″ Vinyl
London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown? On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions. The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

Exit Records Presents “Mosaic – Vol 1″

Exit Records Presents “Mosaic – Vol 1″

Posted 02 December 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks | 1 Comment

As announced on this site a couple of months back Exit Records are preparing to release their first compilation album entitled “Mosaic”. Volume 1 will be in your stores shortly, here’s the full info and details.

With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles.

As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. Well known
producers such as Skream, Instra:mental, Scuba and Commix rub shoulders with some
inspiring new talents such as Indigo, Synkro, Mode and Code 3. The theme of the album is
quality timeless music, whether it be a dance floor killer such as Systems ‘Observation
Point’ or Loxy and Resounds ‘Vertigo’ through to the tangerine dreamlike sounds of Croms ‘Invisible Cities’ or Stray’s ‘Pushed’, this album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today.

Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

New D&B CD

SYMMCD002 – Break – Resistance – CD
‘Symmetry’ earned Break an army of new fans beyond D&B and saw tracks picked up by the likes of techno legends Laurent Garnier and Josh Wink, while tunes such as ‘Is This What You Want’ and ‘Traits’ have continued to remain staples in the sets of the D&B elite. Two years on and Break is releasing his second long player; ‘Resistance’. With barely a third of the album unveiled it is already receiving heavy support from pioneers such as Doc Scott, Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Goldie, Andy C and LTJ Bukem, as well as the likes of Zane Lowe, Laurent Garnier, Caspa, Mistajam, Martyn, is shaping up to be one of the biggest releases yet this year …

New D&B Releases

31R048 – Despot – Rogue State / Concert – 12″ Vinyl
A side ’Rouge State’ brings the tribal funk and a unique cinematic flavour. An emotive blend of depth and hypnotic energy. Subtly evolving but punched packed, the sub-bass lines are unmistakable. On the flip side ‘Concert’ uplifts with soulful vocals (think Erykah Badu) and a minimal glitchy backdrop. Perfect 12” for the Future beats 31 records imprint.

MAC021 – Soul intent – Rebel Music – 12″ Vinyl
Randalls Mac 2 recordings showcases another banging release with the return of fast moving breakthrough artist Soul intent. Having all ready featured on the label on the 17th release back in 2008 and on the recent justice league EP Soul intent returns once again to show us how rolling drum n bass should be done. The A side ” Rebel music” punches through with razor sharp breaks that bring the track to some seriously sub low basslines. Haunting vocals lead through the track introducing some seriously deep FX and strings that make this track one stone cold killer. The flip “Cybergroove” makes for a more upbeat affair but certainly shows Soul intents versatility as an artist. Percussion lead breaks and some haunting strings cut into a bassline that punches its way throughout the track before cutting into a FX lead breakdown. DJ support from : Randall, AI, Klute, Doc scott, Survival, Fabio, Crissy criss and eveson Radio – BBC 1Xtra and Kool FM

NSDX006 – Cutline – Die For You Remixes – 12″ Vinyl
There aren’t many acts working in electronic music who can say they’ve had their music played by both trance demi-god Paul Van Dyke and drum & bass don Andy C in the space of a month. But Cutline can. The Bristol-based duo are at the forefront of a new breed of multi-genre dance acts, applying their no-nonsense, bass-heavy approach to everything from dubstep to D&B to house. After a year that’s seen Cutline remix The Qemists, J Majik & Wickaman, Nick Thayer and Mindflow (the latter of which smacked into the Beatport charts at #3), Cutline are now finally releasing their debut solo release for Never Say Die. ‘Die For You’ sees the duo in electro-house mood, complete with flowing piano chords, bleeping synths, heavily processed vocals and, of course, a drop that’s filthier than a 5am-kebab. It’s just another example of Cutline’s ability to turn their hand to almost any genre and absolutely smash it. Backed by remixes from dubstep and D&B masters Mindflow and Shock One, this latest release from Never Say Die is an impressively broad demonstration of the sounds and trends that are currently ripping club land apart.

Last but not least its the title track Bass Up To The Tope… get ready to go gabba step… this last one sets the record straight like no other… when it starts building up you’ll don’t know what to do. The original track ‘Mindgames’ by Muffler (Hospital, Sighco, Freak) was released on Explicit Recordings back in 2007. DABS liked the release so much he made a wicked remix for Disturbd! Mister Dabs turned the original into a monster of a rollerrr for the bassline massive.. Wicked! Rido takes care of the flip in style. The man well known for his epic intro’s rips it up like only he can. Well timed synth stabs and a classical music style complement the rolling beat. BIG bassline dropping as the synth sounds roll on and on. Main stage bussiness!

DETAIL003 – Lynx Feat. Sense – For The Rebels – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Lynx and Detail Recordings follow up the hugely successful debut ‘Keep it low’ with the next single. ‘For the Rebels’ featuring Sense MC has the tonality and vibe of the good old days of drum and bass, when artists like Roni Size were picking up Mercury prizes for their song-writing and highly credible way of portraying an otherwise throwaway dance culture. However if you need something more direct to grab your attention, then Detail resident producers Seed’s huge dubstep remix on the flip does it. Trumping their Keep it Low remix in a big way showing they have all the qualities to rival the productions of hugely successful acts like Chase and Status. Both mixes are extremely commercially viable without a gimmick, autotune or fake tan in sight! Lynx’s trademark attention to detail production shine through and teamed up with Sense MC’s amazing lyrics and flow theres nothing more to do than RAISE YOUR ARMS FOR THE REBELS!

CRIT050 – Cyantific – 305 / Opium – 12″ Vinyl
Critical Music reaches the big 50! A fantastic feat for any independent label in today’s climate but particularly one which has never been afraid to step outside the box and experiment with its output whilst always retaining the utmost integrity. Thanks to superlative A&R’ing skills by label boss Kasra and his genuine love of the music, the Critical brand now commands respect all over the world and with this 50th release it’s easy to see why. Long time friend of the label Cyantific takes the honours here with an absolutely blazing gem in the form of ‘305’ b/w ‘Opium’. Listener, believe and beware – the nastiness comes in full force! Do not be misled by the intro’s delicate vocals amid tranquil oceanic waves; ‘305’ exercises a fierce and fiery energy that pays testament to the versatility of artist and label alike. High synths elevate and peak into a brutal morphing, winding bass, laced with appropriately vicious snares. Definitively dangerous and beautiful at the same time, ‘305’ is one to pollute the dance floor – an electronic euphoria that’s just downright dirty. ‘Opium’ brings a techno-infused mischief to the table, where crisp drums meet a charismatic, undulating bassline. A perky stepper, ‘Opium’s chirpy synths are wholly violated by its fluctuating bass. Layered over the squelching b-line lie glitchy vocal samples, enough to trip up the electronic bleeps that drip throughout, giving this track some seriously sweet ‘n’ sour bite. An awesome ending to a fantastic release. To mark this 50th release look out for free celebratory Critical mix CD’s and other goodies in all good record stores and online retailers. DJ support from Friction, Hype, Danny Byrd, Logistics, Nu Tone, London Elektricity, Kasra, Total Science and more.

Born and raised in Cardiff he makes consistently good tracks with releases on many labels. ADRS has snapped up his track ‘Scorn’ for this third release. This track mixes the pads of liquid Drum and Bass with a bass-line of harder dance floor anthems. Foxrox returns to ADRS with another stunning piece of music. This track has had massive support from The Risky (DnB Arena Founder), who recently played it on the D&B Arena Podcast. It was also a firm favorite on the You Tube Channel ‘Skank and Bass’. SSS022 – Bad Robot – Black Whip – 12″ Vinyl
BaD RoBoT is the collective unit of Phetsta and Rregula, two cyborgs who have traveled back in time from 1980′s to the present day. So far they have released on BSE’s huge Endangered Species LP, Habit Recordings and Technique, with forthcoming material on Incite & Renegade .Their basslines are rough like metal….and they are both, in fact, made of metal. Their melodies are so beautiful they can make a robot understand why it is that Edward Furlong cries. Look out for the robots, they have lasers for eyes….the kind that hurt when you look at them for too long.

DISF009 – Kito – Kito EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
After a series of life-changing experiences abroad, Kito returned home to Australia in 2008 and began to focus on cultivating the ideas which had been germinated through her travels into her own unique sound. The amalgamation of these efforts eventually gave rise to her seminal work What If, which along with Cold on the Bside was immediately recognized and released by Skream, one of Dubstep’s figureheads, on his label Disfigured Dubz in 2009. Into 2010 and Kito has continued the progression of her style and produced a four-track for Disfigured Dubz featuring the hugely popular LFO with vocals by Reija Lee, along with On The Floor, Don’t Wanna Lose You and her remix of Vaccine’s Fever which are characterized by a pop-infused, fresh and precisely clean production style, Kito’s music has received support globally from a number of leading DJs including Skream, Benga, Diplo, D-Bridge, Intra:mental, Joker, Jakes, Digital Mystikz and many more. With an already large and ever-growing fan base and encouraging articles and reviews from publications such as NME & Knowledge, it is clear big things are in store for this young artist.

AWK002 – Dodger Man – Mango Tree / 2_12 – 12″ Vinyl
Awkward Movements returns to release the debut from London’s Dodger Man – one of the most talked-about new producers of the last 12 months. And with good reason. Dodger Man’s multi-instrumentalist background opened the door for his high-profile sets bombed with back-to-back dubs of his own creation. His workings played-out live have gained him a reputation as one of the top emerging DJs, the height of which came following an impressive set at Bloc Weekend, after being hand-picked by Joy Orbison to share the bill. The natural alignment with Awkward Movements has served up his highly-anticipated debut record, and it doesn’t disappoint. Marking Dodger Man’s official debut, Mango Tree steps in where the underground bass sound’s left off. Combining the same elements that pushed Floating Points and SBTRKT to the forefront in 2009 with the vibes that future garage has brought in 2010, Dodger Man takes it up with a deep bass rhythm, crunchy hi-end synth and drums for the decks and dancefloor. Bridging the gap between tech and dub, 2_12 is the stripped down evil-twin on the B-side. Take a complex 22 track and strip it to its core without losing it’s personality and you’ve almost arrived. A uniquely complex tune – wanting to burst out but eerily contained in its black hole minimal approach of grinded synth stabs and one-shot styled drums.

BRK017 – Hem Ft. Terrible Shock / Hem – On a Mission (Shortstuff Remix) / Rich Chroma / Plastic Lily – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. For this tune Hem and Terrible Shock take apart an 80’s soul LP, add some sci-fi synths, lazy drums and a sprinkling of analogue FX. After many painstaking hours of recording the duo take a well earned coffee break, then return to the studio just in time to see the back of the light-footed Blunted Robots man Shortstuff as he runs off chuckling ‘your vocals are mine now!’ Revenge plans are made, vehicles are fuelled up in preparation – but these activities are cut short by the arrival of an email from the culprit – it seems that he took the files back to his HQ for what he describes as a ‘refix’ – with the engines still running, Hem and Shox check out the file and find it to be a work of genius – what they hear is an accelerated kaleidoscopic fusion of on-beat claps and snares in a peak-time northern soul style, super heavy subbass hits and hectic syncopated keyboard chops. The easy tempo and flow of the original have been transformed into a dancefloor classic, no doubt about it. Hem and Shox call off the troops and head back to the studio – calls are made, contracts drawn up and everything gets sent off to Transition for the magical transfer to vinyl. For the flipside the duo select 2 fresh beats from the archives featuring all the trademark Hem elements – flexible riddims, slinky edits, fat synths, warm bass tones, hip-house references… The refix of ‘On a Mission’ featured on Onemans’ much-loved Rinse 11 mix CD. The 12” has already been reviewed in publications such as IDJ and Mixmag – they described it as ‘psychedelic new jack swing’, and its currently being played by the likes of Subswara crew NYC (Soul Motive), Brackles (RinseFM), Mark Pritchard (Warp), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Toddla T (Ninja Tune), Shortstuff (Ramp), Spamchop (Wigflex), Oneman (RinseFM), Geiom (Berkane Sol)

3024010 – Martyn – Left Hander / Shook Up – 12″ Vinyl
After a year dominated with collaborations (the Great Lengths remix double pack), fresh blood and inveterate genre renegades (Illum Sphere’s Titan EP & Altered Natives ‘The Bitch/Crop Duster’ respectively) We at 3024 came to the conclusion a new Martyn release was perhaps overdue. Not so much an album preview as a standalone document of a year spent expanding dance floor horizons over (a great many) seas. 3024’s milestone 10th release arrives in November with 2 brand new Martyn tracks as ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Dubbed out ambience rapidly takes root in the gaps between concrete snares & dissonant brass stabs as bass and synths elevate themselves for one last round of call & response sparring before dissolving back into barely audible dialogue. Steam age industrial monolith ‘Shook Up’ swaps slink for haunted metronomic brutality, snapping quickly into focus first with relentless kicks before bass akin to an Atari2600 playing Berghain looms over the clouded horizon. Offsetting the claustrophobia is the first hints of melody as an impossibly slight piano phrase creeps in, countering rhythmical pummelling with ghost in the machine delicacy. Classically spastic 808 tendrils are underpinned by soaring synth strings as proceedings draw to a juddering close. Capturing 3024’s musical progress with typical accuracy Erosie’s latest sleeve design is perhaps his best yet, echoing the back to basics theme with beautifully austere monochrome geometry curdling into something altogether more volatile at the edges.

Part 3 of a limited series of 12” Vinyl taken from ‘Triangulation (Interpretations) album. the Joe made an immediate impact on the scene with his 12”s on Hessle Audio and Applepips over the past year, his rework of So You Think You’re Special has a slowly blossoming groove underpinning stuttering percussion, jangling keys and an expertly playful melody that opens out across the sparse background. Finally, South London’s Deadboy offers an understated modern jungle remix of Before with skittering hats and heavy bass that can’t fail to light up floors and faces.

PSQ004 – Asusu – No Kya – 12″ Vinyl
The fourth release on the Project Squared label marks our first year in existence. Asusu, the artist who graced the first Project Squared 12” a year ago, returns with “No Kya”, a 144bpm track of introspective, impeccable sound design, a tightly controlled swung beat reminiscent of Garage and a deep bass line. The track follows in the vein of Asusu’s previous 12” releases on Project Squared and Immerse Records (and his forthcoming release on Orca Recordings), whilst pushing his sound into a new, more sedate area. The B side features a remix of “No Kya” by F, a producer who has created a strong reputation for himself in just 2 years of releasing music on 7even Recordings. He has worked with Headhunter, has remixed Jus Wan and has been remixed by Ramadanman and Untold. His album “Energy Distortion” is one of the highlights of 2010 so far. F remixes “No Kya” into a 140bpm club tune. The drums switch between 4/4 and swung patterns, accompanied by rattling percussion and huge sub bass. Dance floor tested with success by Skratch at Sub:stance, Berghain, this track finishes off a superbly balanced release that caters both for intense headphone listening and the peak time dance floor. Mastered at Optimum, Bristol, United Kingdom.

ATLAS01 – James Blake – Limit To You Love – 10″ Vinyl
So far 2010 has been a stellar year for James Blake; first with his critically acclaimed ‘The Bells Sketch’ EP then the huge underground smash ‘CMYK’ on R&S, he’s gone from a left field beat-maker operating on the fringes of dubstep to one of the brightest new names to watch in British music today. A second R&S release – the brilliant ‘Klavierwerke EP’ – was released in September, and immediately set about defining the sound of James’ future as he cut and spliced his own voice to create an EP of emotive, insular genius, knowingly paving the way for his full vocal debut with Limit To Your Love. Off the back of this EP, some bloggers claimed to have been reduced to tears by the simplicity and beauty of the sounds the 21-year-old teases from his home studio. James now rounds off an unparalleled year of discovery by unveiling one of the most stunning male vocals to emerge this millennium. This version of Feist & Chilly Gonzales’s ‘Limit To Your Love’ will be the first taste of his debut album due in early 2011. Re-worked, recorded and produced entirely alone in his bedroom, this single is also the first time listener will have had the chance to hear James’ incredibly soulful voice. Matching a heart-stoppingly emotional delivery to a speaker-busting, foundation-crumbling bassline, this is a simply exceptional piece of music, the natural successor to Massive Attack’s Unfinished Sympathy as the ultimate expression of UK urban emotion.  ‘Limit To Your Love’ is more than just a cover, it’s a glimpse into James Blake’s world. Many have already heard LTYL shaking the foundations of James’ DJ sets this year. As dubstep fragments into the mainstream consciousness James Blake boldly sets out his stall as one of the most credible and forward thinking artists to emerge in years. James has just returned from shooting the LTYL video in Copenhagen with influential director Martin De Thurah. His debut album will be released in early 2011.

CMPD008 – Compund One – Pum Pum / Back Off – 12″ Vinyl
The eighth release on their self-titled label sees Compound One step out of the darkened lab to take time out from their usual techy experiments and head straight for the rave… A hugely diverse release that has been played across the board by DJs such as Mista Jam, MJ Cole and Brendon Moeller. As featured by Zero T on his recent Fabric Live 52 mix Pum Pum Beat gets its peculiar name from the rhythm of the kicks and snares rather than what people seem to think! The highly swung beats and quirky percussion form a backbone for a bassline that is hard to resist. Emotional Detroit style stabs complete the picture and the breakdown will have your hands in the air! Carrying on with the emo vibes of this release, Back Off sees the duo go right back to their roots with an early UK 2-step garage inspired number. Trademark Qualifide vocal cut ups and Fracture breakbeats come together to form the groove. Once again, the breakdown is pure hands in the air. Mistajam (Radio 1/ 1Xtra) – “Wanted to get a hold of the Pum Pum beat since hearing it on Zero T’s mix!” Brendon Moeller (The Beat Pharmacy / Deep Space Media)- “Pum Pum Beat’s got the all the sub, dub and funk you could want in a track”. James Mountain (Ministry / Ninja Tune) – “Class! I’m deep in it”. MJ Cole (Prolific) – “Wow the Back Off track is the nuts! Straight on the lappie for DJ action”.

BLKBTR01R – Man Like Me – Lovestuck Remixes – 12″ Vinyl
Man Like Me are no strangers to us here at Black Butter Records, fans of some of their more recent tracks such as ‘London Town’ we SO had to get involved with this new EP. The band are best known for their ska, grime, indie blend. Their brazen lyrics are less self-conscious than some of their musical counterparts, and revel in the realities, perks and calamity of being a young Londoner. The EP contains three brilliant original tracks – ‘Lovestruck’, ‘Why Bother?’ and ‘Run Over’ but more importantly for your dance floors, a nice selection of mixes for you to get your mitts on. Kill Light are first up, recently debuting on Cheap Thrills, that EP received a rapturous reception and got peeps watching. Stepping up to the plate once again, the duo’s garage-rave interpretation of ‘Lovestruck’ got us bogling away from left to right. Moda Music’s *Tom Staar* carries the original and lifts it to starry heights for a proper rave up, whilst for the same track *Brackles* provides the perfect basement vibe that will have your floor tripping out peak time. Our final course is brought to us by *Leatherhead*, who quite a while back provided a sleazy take of a Kissy Sell Out track. Sounding livelier than ever, he gives the instrumentals of ‘Run Over’ a fuller effect bringing that carnival feeling straight onto your floors.

New D&B CD

EXITCD006    Ritual Dance LP – Genotype    Exit Records CD
After a lengthy break from the electronic music world, Genotype is back with an LP for Exit Records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm. Having started his music career in the mid nineties under the legendary alias Just Jungle, with releases on the massively influential labels of that era such as Trouble On Vinyl, Renegade Hardware and Reinforced Records, its no surprise that he’s managed to capture the essence of rawness in his recent music akin to the early years of Jungle. Many producers have tried and failed to bring back the old skool sound with an original flavor but Genotype has managed this by resisting the temptation to lash in the tired old classic breaks and instead has drawn for the more organic sounding percussion and drum kits. The dubbed out theme runs throughout the album paying homage to his love for West Indian music which he has been involved in for many years and naturally influences the music he creates. Genotype is a man of few words and prefers to let his music do the talking so check out the album and draw your own conclusions.

New D&B Releases

TRIPS003 Kontroller / ABTN – Silent Witness & Break Triple Seed 12″ Vinyl
Welcome to the third release on Triple Seed. This time, featuring the classic partnership of Silent Witness & Break.
A. Kontroller – This number takes no prisoners with its anthemic reece and breakbeat driven madness. Designed to please crowds, this one will empower the dj and dress down his or her victims. Snippets of eighties pop vocals and guitar punctuate the lazer fight bass stabs providing all the tone and colour necessary to illuminate any flagging dance floor. Prepare to get caught in a mosh when this goes off.
AA. ABTN – Heads down! ABTN is two step tour de force of bass beats and atmosphere. The initial calm gives way to a ridiculously heavy bass growl and crisp beats that will entrance any self respecting party goer. Stripped down and serious, the contemporary minimal feel is backed up by typically beefy production that (really) will stand the test of time. DJ support from Andy C, Ed Rush, Goldie, Friction, Bad Company, Bailey, Fierce, Survival, Noisia, and more…

EXITLP006    Ritual Dance LP – Genotype    Exit Records 3×10”

CRIT048    Redlines (Break Remix) / Scaremonger – Total Science Feat. Riya / Total Science    Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Limited finish copy promos. One of the most highly revered and rotated vocal D&B tracks from the past six months is back, this time with an ice-cold twist ready to take us into the frosty autumnal months. Drawing in the talents of Critical playmate Break to add his deft touch was always going to result in one thing – absolute dance floor devastation! Oozing class while smacking up the dance is something many producers can only dream of….the masterclass starts here. Drifting pads with sexed-up guitar touches intro the ‘Redlines’ remix before the drums kick and we’re away on a blues-infused excursion with full vocal riding on top as the chords roll out. Don’t be fooled though as the fun’s just about to start! A quick repeated refrain and suddenly in crash the amens, edits and the most gut-wrenching sub to demolish the place. Vocal teases run throughout together with swathes of guitar but it’s the sheer tearout that wins in the end. Absolutely fantastic.
Flipping things over and Total Science come back with the classic sounds of ‘Scaremonger’. Seemingly an ode to the vibes of yesteryear, this one bounces with the best of them. A hot twostepping break carries the stabbing b-line that morphs subtly as this wicked bubbler moves along with ease. Proper Total Science doing what they do best. DJ support from Andy C, Bailey, Hype, Friction, Cyantific, Logistics and many more.

MAC021    Rebel Music – Soul intent    Mach II Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo.

MEDI029 Feel It EP – V.I.V.E.K Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl x 2

Please note there is no CD with this pressing. The latest release on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint is a four track double pack Vinyl. It comes on the back of his first Medi release last year ‘Kulture’ b/w ‘Meditation Rock’ and countless dubplates that you’ll no doubt have heard if you’ve checked the Anti Social Entertainment on Rinse FM. Fusing digidub, sound system deep bass, rolling percussion, a hint of Berlin techno it all adds up to those ‘Medi’ style vibes; eyes down, blissed out, heavy weight music. The title track, ‘Feel It’ kicks things off in fine style with some of the most infectious rolling tablas – his percussion is just sublime. A vocal sample declaring the weight of your bass and the largeness of your soundsystem is all the track needs to usher in a chest thumping sub sonic bass tone and there is no way back you’re sucked into that soup of sub bass frequencies. ‘Grandfather Clock’ counts down to a dance floor meltdown when the metronome-like sample, half tempo drum patterns and hefty bass melts into blazing techno buzzes that just keep coming, it’s those killer synths that make it, truly coming from nowhere. The deeply blissful ‘Motherland’ is one for the meditative crew, subtle but weighty bass pulses roll off half stepping rhythms, tablas and all that good stuff all accented with Indian vocals instrumentation. It’s so deep, minimal it would make Youngsta proud. The final track ‘Strategy’ is a roller with a garage kind of swing to it, it skips along with big room dub techno chords twisting in and out of the bumpy beats it really comes alive and picks up the pace. Pure vibes all the way.

NMBRS11    Myth – Roska & Untold    Numbers 12″ Vinyl
Limited supply. Numbers is proud to present the debut release from Roska & Untold. In a move that is bound to shake up the markets, Long Range and Myth are the latest in dancefloor innovations brought to you by Messrs Jack Dunning (aka Untold; CEO of Hemlock Records) and Wayne Goodlit (aka Roska; MD of Roska Kicks and Snares). With fears over a lack of imagination in House music at an all time high, these two producers have joined forces to create two envelope-pushing solutions to this highly contentious issue. After several consultations a deal was sealed with the board at Numbers who in turn offered to provide logistical and technical support. A1 – Myth was constructed from the careful sculpture of demented wailing horns underpinned by precision crafted beats and bass. Leading industry experts have been hailing this as a step forward in the merger between Grime and House. AA1 – Long Range, inspired by the groundbreaking work performed in the KMS and Prescription labs of Chicago & Detroit respectively, resulting in a fresh House hybrid powered by the patented Roska Kicks and Snares and those deadly Untold subs.

NOMIC002    Seems Like / The Cycle Ft. Skream – Riya    Autonomic 12″ Vinyl

Finish copy promo. Next in line on a very busy Autonomic schedule is a single from one of the hottest vocal talents around, Riya. Lacing the Autonomic sound with her voice was an obvious choice for the Autonomic camp and the results are two timeless tracks that have been picked up on by a huge cross section of DJs such as Skream, Youngsta,dBridge, Instra:mental and many more. A) Riya – Seems Like – Having become popular after featuring on the Fabric/dBridge and Instra:mental Autonomic CD, this track has rightly been given a home on the Autonomic imprint and has been eagerly awaited by many. Riya proves her songwriting talents once again and complemented with the backing track by a certain other Autonomic
artist, this one was never going to fail. AA) Riya – The Cycle – The AA side offers us a different angle from Riya, with a steadily building backing track her vocals loop in a hypnotic and enchanting cycle around Rhodes chords and a pumping heartbeatlike 4×4 bassline. Pure simplicity and an uncluttered soundscape gives this track the listen again qualities expected from Autonomic.

PAL061 Assimilation – John Tejada & Josh Humphrey Palette Recordings 12″ Vinyl

Finish copy. Tejada and Humphrey made their debut together late in 09 with their “Marooned,” ep. “Assimilation” continues the theme of being marooned in Los Angeles. The four works compiled here are the result of the best moments out of 20 recording sessions. The music is for the most part assembled with analog instruments with Humphrey and Tejada bringing their modular gear together for the sessions. Humphrey’s knowledge of synths and programming is quite extensive. He until recently helped operate LA based Big City Music, a dealer of modular and boutique synthesizers.
The four works cover a wide range. “Assimilation” builds up panning modular basslines and swirling percussion with a building chord line that brings things together as the drums build. “Culture Shock” uses pitch shifting trickery to transpose the main melodic hook slamming it into nasty modular bass modulation giving the track it’s pretty/dark edge. “Adaptation” keeps it’s modular touches a bit more subtle focusing on classic melodic Tejada chords and nostalgic beats. “Subversion” rounds things out with a non 4/4 piece perhaps being the most nostalgic moment of the ep. This highly melodic uplifting track takes it’s cues from happy musical memories. Classic chords, 808 beats, and some melodic modular lines to close out the ep.

AWK002 Mango Tree / 2_12 – Dodger Man Awkward Movements 12″ Vinyl
Very limited finished copy promo. Awkward Movements returns to release the debut from London’s Dodger Man – one of the most talked-about new producers of the last 12 months. And with good reason. Dodger Man’s multi-instrumentalist background opened the door for his high-profile sets bombed with back-to-back dubs of his own creation. His workings played-out live have gained him a reputation as one of the top emerging DJs, the height of which came following an impressive set at Bloc Weekend, after being hand- picked by Joy Orbison to share the bill.

DRUNK019    The Hum / rrrr – Peverelist & Hyetal    Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Punch Drunk continue to twist, redefine and push forward the template of dubstep with a new 12” combining the talents of rising star Hyetal and Bristol veteran Peverelist. As part of the second wave of Bristol dubstep producers, Hyetal has already made his mark, garnering critical acclaim for his recent 12” ‘Phoenix’ on Orca and previously releasing 12”s on labels such as Reduction and Soul Motive in addition to his collaboration with Shortstuff on Punch Drunk earlier this year. This is Peverelist’s second 12” release this year following his ‘Better Ways of Living’ release for Punch Drunk and his recent mix for Resident Advisor. Both producers bring their trademark ingredients to the table, Hyetal’s kaleidoscopic synthesis and Pev’s deadly junglistic rhythm section combine to produce two very different tracks. The Hum is immediately grabbing, brimming with propelling energy and uplifting melodics. The cryptically titled ‘rrrr’ is a much darker disorientating psychedelic affair, slowly luring you into it’s groove, providing another typical Punch Drunk curve ball.

PRDM003 Ratville Remixed Cuts #1 – Goth Trad / DJ Tuttle Publicriddim 12″ Vinyl

Finished copy 180 gram Vinyl. RATVILLE is a new school dub band releasing their 1st album Dubs on the Corner in 2009, leaving serious after effects throughout the country. This time, GOTH-TRAD and DJ TUTTLE, east – west dubstep masters remixed the tracks to create a challenging piece of vinyl cut!! Remix was done by two artists, contributing to the spread of dubstep in Japan. As a host of Back To Chill releasing from UK’s one and only DEEP MEDI MUSIK, GOTH-TRAD is now achieving worldwide prominence. On the other hand, leader of DUBSTEP RUDE, DJ TUTTLE is out to shake things up establishing a new label NODE with Akira Ohashi from Psycheouts G.
GOTH-TRAD’s side modestly builds up till it finally rocks the floor in the latter half. May suit for outdoor performances. Heavy duty 808 type kick supporting bottom end with metal-like percussion and SEs floating in the air, DJ TUTTLE side is made for the darkest closed chambers to inhale the low frequency. This is the spearhead of dubstep made in Japan. Hands-on approach of the two made a sensational reaction with Ratvilleafs sound, pushing it to the next dimension. Introducing – Genotype “Ritual Dance” LP [Exit Records]

Posted 14 September 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 2 Comments

After a lengthy break from the electronic music world, Genotype is back with an LP for Exit Records and provides a lesson in stripped back dub influenced music at approximately 170 bpm

Coming soon – ASC Presents his new label “Auxiliary”

Posted 29 July 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks | 1 Comment

Auxiliary is the new label from ASC.  It’s goal is the continuation of the Autonomic sound, that has risen to popularity over the last year or so. US based ASC has just released his debut LP on Nonplus Records entitled “Nothing Is Certain” and he now feels the time is right to launch his own label showcasing his unique sound.

ASC

ASC has always been involved with the more experimental end of Drum & Bass having released music on such influential labels as Offshore and Warm Communications inspired by the works of 808 State, Art Of Noise, The Prodigy, Blame, Odyssey, Future Sound Of London, Slowdive, Monolake, Polar & Autechre.

The Touch / The Touch (Vaccine feat. Riya Remix)

Starting out with what has to be one of the most eagerly awaited tracks this year, The Touch finally sees a release.  It’s become a bit of an Autonomic anthem and Vaccine‘s lush 140 retake on the flip enlists the vocal talents of Riya, and makes sure that this plate gets maximum exposure from heads pushing different tempos.

ASC – The Touch by Auxiliary

Look out for more cutting edge electronic dance music from Auxiliary to follow this essential first release.

Full colour artwork sleeve with Full colour poster inside. Lifted Music presents the first EP of its 2010 release campaign, The `Conquerors and Commoners’ EP. In a scene where EPshave become somewhat lost under the ideologies of albums, Spor has produced what can only be labelled as yet another benchmark within electronic music. Four unique, distinct tracks fill an EP crafted by one of 2009′s biggest artists, compiling an exotic, yet beautifully chaotic, display that shows why Spor is of the highest grade. Engineering like the scene has never heard before, arrangements that have never been attempted before, Lifted Music proudly presents `Conquerors and Commoners’ EP

KINGDOM – Already being labelled as the tune of 2010, Kingdom is the definition of Spor at his tearout best. Aggressive, destructive and slightly punk, LFTD009′s A-side is the main highlight in every respectable DJ’s set at the moment. An accelerated build up that amps like no other, the sheer velocity of the drop leaves riots on dancefloors worldwide. Drum and Bass at unimaginable heights, Spor present’s `Kingdom’.

OVERDUE – Unlike the tracks namesake, `Overdue’ has been well worth the wait. Featuring a interesting sample for the spotters, Spor’s arrangements take to new heights with a track that features South African vocalist Tasha Baxter. Reminiscent of a rocky Moroccan landscape, intricate, graceful beats accompany a glistening guitar melody full of emotion. Baxter’s vocals add a sense of humbleness against Spor’s energetic drum patterns. `Overdue’ is the tune we all wish we wrote.

KOARI – Featuring arguably one of the biggest intro’s of all time, Kaori is Spor’s erratically well presented experiment. Based upon the influence of Japanese cinema, Spor takes his production to a new level with a vocal so euphoric and magical, it will have the whole dancefloor reaching to the skies. A tumbling, rolling drum track lays the foundations to a raw midrange – the trademark Spor sound. Finishing up with an organ arrangement, Kaori will be known as one of Spor’s finest moments.

HALOGEN – Reminiscent of `1up’ from Spor’s debut EP; The Supernova EP, `Halogen’ provides the more light hearted approach to the end of the double 12”. Furiously hyped like an overcooked pancake, Halogen resembles a biology experiment taught by the professor of all professors. Fast, high-octane, and with a melody that will leave you humming like a bumblebee for hours, Spor finishes his second EP with class.

a Spor – Kingdom
b Spor – Overdue
c Spor – Kaori
d Spor – Halogen

FFLP1-2 Demon Remix – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

SUBS008 Back To The Machine Sampler – Current Value Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl
Subsistenz is back after a short seasonal break with one of the masters of sound design Current Value. Kick starting our new year with two tracks off pure techy genius just a small taste of what is to come on the much anticipated album Back To The Machine (subs001). A1 – Lipophil is a new breed of techno based dnb a deep brooding machine funk that captures the essence of techno and the energy of dnb. Moving away from the noise and into the sound scapes of detuned techy melodies reminiscence of the days of smokey single strobe techno parties held in basements all over Europe. Like a dysfunctional child lipophils energy is relentless and emotionally evolving held delicately within the threshold of its own exsistence. AA2 – In The Shell has been reworked and mangled by one half of Machine Code (current value) taken from there deeply awaited album Environments due out later this year on Subtrakt. The original machine step groove has been chopped – broken and reformed into a dnb floor stomper. This track is brutal in deliverance, sound and arrangement, with no remorse current value cooks up and injects a lethal strain straight to the mother vein. BACK TO THE MACHINE – CURRENT VALUE ALBUM – SUBSISTENZ COMING SOON!!

MEDI025 Elephant Dub / Heavy As Stone – Mark Pritchard Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
What’s to say about the phenomenal production talent of Mark Pritchard that has not already been said? Mark has been lovingly producing cutting edge music for some two decades now under numerous music guises and aliases such as Global Communications, Reload, Troubleman, Jedi Knights and most recently under his Harmonic 313 moniker for Warp Records. Along the way Mark has captured the attention of the most discerning industry heavyweights, be it DJ Jazzy Jeff extolling the virtues of his Harmonic 33 project, Kenny Dope raving about his Troubleman output, or tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Benji B eagerly anticipating the next email from Mr Pritchard bearing the fruits of his labour in the studio. Over the last four years Mark has become entranced with the bass weight of dubstep from such pioneering figures as Mala, Kode9, Benga and Skream to name but a few. Nowhere can this be more clearly heard than on his Harmonic 313 LP and his jiggy anthem ‘Wind It Up’ featuring Sa-Ra’s Om’Mas Keith released on Hyperdub in 2009. Mark’s first release on Mala’s DEEP MEDi Musik imprint showcases both facets of his production talent. The appropriately titled ‘Elephant Dub’ rumbles and shakes with earth shattering density and is relentless in its sub bass charge, which poses problems on lesser sound systems which have been known to give up the ghost or simply shut down in the face of such an onslaught. On the flip ‘Heavy As Stone’ takes us in a completely different direction, maintaining a deeper, organic vibe with percussive, hypnotic drum patterns and a driving double time bass. A little something for everyone then.

BRK014 Sugar Coated Lover – Geiom Feat. Marita Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
Berkane Sol moves into a new decade with the future soul of ‘Sugar Coated Lover’. Back in ’08 Marita and Geiom blessed the dubstep scene with the certified classic Reminissin’, this time they turn their radar towards the vibrant keys and soca style drumz of UK funky. Elements of disco, techno and house wrap themselves around Marita’s delicious vocal, with a sweet synthy steel drum melody leading up to the seriously catchy hook. Marita and Geiom take the sounds of house music both old and new and create a sophisticated hybrid that joins the dots between producers like Todd Terry, Luomo and Roska. On the flip the unstoppable Blunted Robots team of Brackles and Shortstuff take the raw elements off to their workshop, clear some space on the bench and begin to rebuild according to their own confused specifications. They fill the CPU of the new machine with the original data, a DJ EZ set and the best bits of early Search and Destroy – after some extensive experimentation we find them both happily shockin’ out – until Shortstuff realises that most of the vocal is missing and what’s left is severely broken – so they sprinkle on an extra helping of their sweetest arpeggios in the hope that Geiom doesn’t notice. This 12″ fits perfectly into the creative space that has opened up in UK underground dance music, taking ideas from garage, techno, dub, grime and house and melting them into exhilarating new forms. It has found favour with all the usual suspects including – Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank (Radio1), Kode 9, Scratcha DVA, Oneman, Alexander Nut (RinseFM) and Untold.

Seven – Dial Up. Seven is established DnB producer Eddy Woo alter ego. In this incarnation he is currently making waves with several releases. This side is a classic youngsta track, with a typical Seven bass work out and a light melody built around driving percussive drum programming making it fit in anywhere. Science – Bamboo Dub. Science are a young production team out of the greater Antwerp area. This is their debut release and as such a great introduction to their sound. Building on the sounds that made halfstep dubstep so popular this track is eyes down business all the way with deep bass and melodica lines.

HDB032 Kaychunk / You Know What I Feel – Kyle Hall HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
After his remix of Darkstar’s “Aidy’s Girl Is A Computer” at the end of 2009, Hyperdub were quick to request an EP from Kyle Hall, and these two fantastic tracks are the outcome. Just 18 years old and hailing from Detroit, Kyle Hall has been getting a lot of attention after releasing several EPs on his own Wild Oats label, plus a one-sided single for Omar S’ FHXE imprint. However, this is his first full release for another label. Both tracks inhabit an interzone between live and mechanical music, full of details and fills that lend a playful, hands-on feel. “Kaychunk” wraps lush arpeggios and classic warm Detroit strings around shuffling syncopated drums into an upbeat track that’s almost a mirror image of uk funky. “You Know What I Feel” combines 2-step kicks that sound like rain hitting wood, with great clouds of bittersweet chords, a see-sawing bassline, and a rich swooning melody that echoes Stevie Wonder’s classic 70s synth-drenched soul.

EX7003 Subsonic – Excision / Excision & Noiz EX7 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ever wondered what the apocalyptic soundtrack to invading robots ready to destroy the world would sound like? Well you’re about to find out as Excision drops the latest 12” on his own EX7 label. Following the immense dancefloor killer ‘Swagga’, supported heavily by Rusko and Mistajam, Excision steps up on the A side of EX7003 to deliver ‘Subsonic’, an incredible blend of super-tough beats and grinding bass. Opening with prophecies of robotic doom before stamping down its mark of totalitarian authority, this one destroys the dance each and every time. Flip over and Excision teams up with Noiz to create ‘Force’ a shifting tumultuous slab of whirling and interchanging basslines that create a wall of sonics just powerful enough to crack a rib or two. Haunting FX and skipping percussive rhythms pave the way for utter destruction.

dBridge & Instra:mental launch ‘Autonomic’, the label

Posted 22 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, player, tracks, video | No Comments

Established in early 2009 by dBridge and Instra:mental, the Autonomic Podcast series hastily captured an audience of over 50,000 listeners each month. Whilst showcasing a wealth of new and exiting music without a channel for release, they decided that the Autonomic brand should move onto bigger things and create a label and regular club night.

Having secured a quarterly night at Fabric in London, and also mixing the Fabric Live 50–dBridge & Instra:mental presents Autonomic CD, the record label was the next logical step in order to create a home for the style of music that they believe has many more avenues to explore. First up for release are two collaborative tracks:

a) dBridge / Instra:mental / Skream – Acacia Avenue

Gaining momentum week in week out on the club circuit, what at first seemed to be quite a barren track has grown into a little monster. The intro draws you in with an unexpected switch into emotive b-line stabs, but it’s the subtle drop of the heavyweight 808 sub layered with the Pro 1 and Moog arps riff that send the dance floors silly. No crash bang wallop of drums here, just a simple riff timed and executed for maximum effect.

aa) dBridge & Instra:mental – Detroid

Traveling down a moodier path than the flipside, Detroid is an Interesting fusion of influences that create something very distinctive. Taut atmospheres and whispering sound effects fabricate a background for the loosely hanging percussion groove and murmuring bass undertone. This track is riddled with trademark production styles from both dBridge and Instra:mental, put them together in the same pot and they mix smoothly into a remarkable piece of music.

NOMIC001 is due to be released in April/May 2010 on Vinyl / Digital.

Forthcoming on Exit Records – EXIT019 / 020

Forthcoming on Exit Records – EXIT019 / 020

Posted 19 January 2010 | By | Categories: misc, news, tracks | No Comments

Fast becoming one of the most exciting and diverse labels in Drum & Bass ‘Exit Records’ have a massive lineup of quality releases in the pipeline. Forthcoming on the label imminently are EXIT019 and EXIT020. Full details are right here.

The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party.

A) Abstract Elements – Wrong Way

“Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here.

B) Abstract Elements – Abysmal Depth

“Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre. Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been. Check out the Farbric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track be work in the mix.

Released on 12″ Vinyl / Digital on 1st February 2010.
Audio Clips now available on the Exit Records myspace page.

Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement.

A) System – Peach Fuzz

On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc etc.

B) System – The Voices

On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

Released on 12″ Vinyl / Digital on 15th February 2010.
Audio Clips now available on the Exit Records myspace page.
