New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT043EP Noir EP – Rockwell Critical Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
Rockwell is a name on everyone’s lips. As if from nowhere he’s managed to get the whole drum & bass scene and more talking about him earning support from such luminaries as Fabio and Gilles Peterson. The ‘Noir EP’ comes not a moment too soon, a release to truly mark his arrival in electronic music and which looks set to turn even more heads. From the sheer sonic brilliance of the film score-inspired title track ‘Noir’ through to the skeletal break and sparse tendancies of the final ‘Tribe’, Rockwell is unfearing in his quest for dark, brooding experimentation that hasn’t been heard in years in drum & bass. An ambition to re-definine the term deep shines though on ‘Stay Calm’, a track that refreshes with glitchy FX, industrial pads and grounding bass that strikes the fear whilst the collaboration with Zero T ‘Bone Structure’ continues the theme with astounding results. Make no mistake people will double-take on this one.
An extraordinary EP that will appeal to lovers of both electronica and pure drum & bass alike. Just add an arm-chair and headphones for maximum satisfaction.

a Rockwell – Noir
b Rockwell – Stay Calm
c Rockwell Ft. Zero Tolerance – Bone Structure
d Rockwell – Tribes

EXIT019 Wrong Way – Abstract Elements Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party. “Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here. “Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre.
Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been. Check out the Fabric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track be work in the mix.

FFLP1-2 Demon Remix – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

EXIT014 Thugtronik / Thugtronika – Instra:mental Exit Records 12″ Vinyl

New Dubstep Releases

EAR013 Wetwipe Riddim – Ginz & Kool Money Kwame Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. 2009 saw the world taken by storm as the Bristol born sound of Purple w0w! infiltrated sound systems and radio stations with it’s catchy synth lines and bold approach. Focus so far has mainly been on Joker who ripped up the rule book and laughed hard at it, but a number of the big floor filler productions that helped make his name, such as the anthem ‘Purple City’, were co-produced by the more mysterious Ginz. Exclusively for Earwax Ginz unleashes a plate of bouncing messed up wonky-synth-hopdubstep- purple-whizzle with help on the buttons this time from the even more mysterious Kool Money Kwame. ‘Wetwipe Riddim’ is a Hennessy-hugging monster of a beat, showcasing Ginz’s superb production ethic and musical mastery – it’s both demented and catchy in equal measures! ‘Oreo’ sees further experiments in bendy beats that leaving you on constant catch up, complete with ankle flapping bass and more psychedelic synth work. Support from: Pinch, Joker, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, MRK1, Cotti and many more…

3024007 Remixes 2/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
The second half of the Great Lengths Remixes package offers 3 more vividly contrasting interpretations of album tracks .Almost a year on from the release of his debut album “One” and with ‘Saviour of Techno’ plaudits still bouncing off concrete walls, Berghain lynchpin Ben Klock turns in a remix of Is This Insanity that distills everything inspirational about both the club and city he calls home. Spaceape’s cracked vocal is welded to a sort of cavernous piston driven groove while traces of the original’s melody fractured into the briefest of shards fight their way to the surface only to sink back into the percussive smog. Located well outside of the heavily scrutinised UK hype centres, Manchester’s rising star Illum Sphere continues to hone his already distinct sound on the flipside’s Brilliant Orange reworking. A clanking off kilter groove rubs up against an extended mutation of the original melody that pushes the track towards a poignant climax, evoking all the ache of reaching for the stars and landing squarely on one’s face.

Having been a vocalist for the past fourteen years, and a producer for the past six, this year Ben delivers a pair of futuristic, energized dubstep tracks with distinct character. “Flip The Coin” is a dark, head-nodding half stepper that packs a weighty punch, utilizing fat percussive patterns with tribal undertones. Twisting, ghostly soundscapes drift in and out from above, with morphing pulses of subbass underneath. On the flipside, “Inhale” brings dubbed out, future-jungle vibes with irresistible energy and hints of mystical allure.

SFS002 El Presidente – Headhunter & DJunya Surefire Sound 12″ Vinyl
Surefire Sound’s second single release features four heavyweight producers representing the UK and North America. This innovative tag-team set brings together dub-tech pioneers collaborating on a pair of earth-moving tracks.
Leading off the release is the UK’s Tony Williams, a.k.a. Headhunter, a veteran Bristol producer with numerous releases on Tempa, alongside Joseph S. Hanks Jr, – Djunya to his mates – a stalwart SF artist whose tracks on Narco Hz, Lo Dubs and Eight FX have established him as a major player. Combing the best of their respective spacious and spacey sounds, “El Presidente” is a luminous, rolling track, equipped with pulsating bass and reverberating synth stabs. It’s truly King Tubby-style dub for the 21st century. The track is getting massive advance play from artists like Jus Wan, F and Mary Anne Hobbs, to name a few.
SF’s Dean J. Grenier, a.k.a. DJG has risen quickly in the electronic ranks via singles on Tube 10, Subway and Narco Hz that showcase his potent techy tracks. He links up with Toronto, Canada’s XI, whose releases on Formant and Immerse have lead to mixes for Sonic Router and a growing international following. “Putney Says” features an intricate, percussive rhythm that lumbers like a giant, each step punctuated by mountainous bass thumps. Sizzling analog synths, vaporous filtered pads and well-timed drops round out this effective and tension-building work.
About Surefire Sound:
Surefire Sound is a new record label presented by the Surefire music group whose goal is to showcase upcoming and established talent in electronic music. The label is part of a collection of projects under the Surefire banner including a booking agency, PR firm, and events management division. GUT001 I’m Not Her – Goldielocks Gut Instinct 12″ Vinyl
Finished copies. A co-production with Benga – the brilliantly sparse, bleepy ‘Green Eyes’ – is going to grab people’s attention, but the other three tracks here are easily as good. Sarah “Goldielocks” Akwisombe makes outstanding modernist electro-pop with dark, emotionally intense lyrical themes and a hefty DJ-friendly dubstep wallop, and is without question a talent who is here to stay. The EP is overall inspired by London, underground music scenes – 2step / garage / grime and dubstep, paranoia, relationships and concealed emotions.

BRK014 Sugar Coated Lover – Geiom Feat. Marita Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
Berkane Sol moves into a new decade with the future soul of ‘Sugar Coated Lover’. Back in ’08 Marita and Geiom blessed the dubstep scene with the certified classic Reminissin’, this time they turn their radar towards the vibrant keys and soca style drumz of UK funky.
Elements of disco, techno and house wrap themselves around Marita’s delicious vocal, with a sweet synthy steel drum melody leading up to the seriously catchy hook. Marita and Geiom take the sounds of house music both old and new and create a sophisticated hybrid that joins the dots between producers like Todd Terry, Luomo and Roska.
On the flip the unstoppable Blunted Robots team of Brackles and Shortstuff take the raw elements off to their workshop, clear some space on the bench and begin to rebuild according to their own confused specifications. They fill the CPU of the new machine with the original data, a DJ EZ set and the best bits of early Search and Destroy – after some extensive experimentation we find them both happily shockin’ out – until Shortstuff realises that most of the vocal is missing and what’s left is severely broken – so they sprinkle on an extra helping of their sweetest arpeggios in the hope that Geiom doesn’t notice.
This 12″ fits perfectly into the creative space that has opened up in UK underground dance music, taking ideas from garage, techno, dub, grime and house and melting them into exhilarating new forms.
It has found favour with all the usual suspects including – Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs, Rob Da Bank (Radio1), Kode 9, Scratcha DVA, Oneman, Alexander Nut (RinseFM) and Untold.

HES011 The Bells Sketch – James Blake Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hessle Audio’s eleventh release comes from James Blake, a 21-year-old from London, who has previously released for Hemlock Recordings, as well as having an EP in the pipeline for R&S. This three track EP exclusively features his own warped and manipulated vocals. James also joins Mount Kimbie for their live shows, singing as well as playing keyboard.
“James Blake’s mongrelised, pitch-bent production style finds kinship with dubstep’s Joker and Untold, but his secret weapon is his voice: Blake sings with a sweet, honey-soaked coo that betrays his traditional background in music: one that knew the Family Stone long before it’d heard of FWD>>” – Tom Lea, Fact Magazine
Hessle Audio was formed in Leeds in early 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley. The label has released tunes by TRG, Martyn, Pangaea, Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Joe and Untold. New D ‘n’ B CD

CITRUSCD004 Jade Presents The Venom Album – Jade Citrus Recordings CD x 2
Hungary is the fresh birthplace of so many top producers within the DnB scene. Mindscape, Matt-U, Chris.SU, SKC. But this one producer has managed to produce so many killer tracks Citrus could not just leave it alone… This Producer is Jade.. And his Venom LP is the result of his hard work. A deadly collection of productions that, once injected into the eardrum will grasp the host track by track untill there isnt anything left! The LP starts off with the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you havent heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Then its up to the second track.. the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time.. This Teched out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit.. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Track 3 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalistic sound, oldskool tech-steppin vibes are definitely the case here but with an upgraded 2009 feel! Then for track 4 Jade teams up with longtime producer friend Matt-U.. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this.. then logical is the way to go.. Moblaw is a straight up elblow greaser thatll make you get messy on the dancefloor. The funk just oozes off this tight production thatll make you scream for more! Then on to 5… where Jade remixes three of his best friends.. namely the dutch trio thats Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production.. But now its time to repay the favor as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dancefloor filth like no other. Have the tables turned?
Then for the next one where Jade teams up with another group of comrades.. namely the Mindscape boys! These guys arent by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke.. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for 7th Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality.. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. halfstep, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Track 8.. Jade goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond propertions! No 9 is the fantastic Phace rework of Cryptic which was first featured on Jade’s Ready EP.. Nothing but love for Phace and you know why… Germafunk all the way! nice and nerdy! For the final track its Jade’s My World which as also featured as his Sampler for this fantastic Album.

CITRUSLP004 Venom LP – Jade Citrus Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 4
Hungary is the fresh birthplace of so many top producers within the DnB scene.. Mindscape, Matt-U, Chris SU, SKC. But this one producer has managed to produce so many killer tracks Citrus could not just leave it alone… This Producer is Jade. And his Venom LP is the result of his hard work. A deadly collection of productions that, once injected into the eardrum will grasp the host track by track until there isn’t anything left! The LP starts off with the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time. This Tech’d out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Then flip it over for the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you haven’t heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Disc 2 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalist sound. Oldskool tech-steppin vibes are definitely the case here but with an upgraded 2009 feel! For side 4 Jade teams up with long-time producer friend Matt-U. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this. then logical is the way to go. Moblaw is a straight up elbow greaser that’ll make you get messy on the dance floor. The funk just oozes off this tight production that’ll make you scream for more! Then on to disc 3… where Jade remixes three of his best friends. namely the Dutch trio that’s Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production. But now its time to repay the favour as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dance floor filth like no other. Have the tables turned? Then for the flip Jade teams up with another group of comrades, namely the Mindscape boys! These guys aren’t by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for the final disc. Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. half step, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Then for the last one.. Jade doesn’t sees the last tune to be a tune to be neglected. So on this one he goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummelled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond proportions!

c Jade – No Cure
d Jade feat. RymeTyme – Venom
e Jade – This Is My World (Icicle remix)
f Jade & Matt-U – Moblaw
g Black Sun Empire – Stasis (Jade remix)
h Jade & Mindscape – Banshee
i Jade – Forged Reality

CRIT043EP Noir EP – Rockwell Critical Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finished copy promo.
Just add an arm-chair and headphones for maximum satisfaction.

b Rockwell – Stay Calm
c Rockwell Ft. Zero Tolerance – Bone Structure
d Rockwell – Tribes

EXIT019 Wrong Way – Abstract Elements Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy.
Check out the Fabric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track works in the mix.

New Dubstep Releases

IME014 Separation – Sigha & Spherix Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Southern Australia’s Spherix has been plugging away for some time, releasing great tunes on a selection of labels, and Immerse have spotted his talent and snapped up a cracking twelve. In collaboration with London’s Sigha, ‘Seperation’ is a pounding atmospheric thumper, silken threads of sound woven around pulsing beats and surgical percussion, expertly designed and constructed to create perpetual forward motion. ‘Lesser People’ is somewhat harder – crisp drums, ticking hats and solid bass drones flying past at supersonic speed as insane tech FX rip the veryair asunder. Accomplished and advanced. 9/10 [recommended] [DJ ThinKing, IDJ issue 117]

NONPLUS004 No Future (Skreamix) – Instra:mental / Skream Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus 004 calls upon the undeniable talents of dubstep legend DJ Skream. After working on a number of tracks alongside Instra:mental and dBridge down @The Zoo, he provides a remix of Instra:mental’s seminal ‘No Future’ and has also crafted one of his deepest cuts to date ‘Minimalistix’
a) Instra:mental ‘No Future’ (Skreamix) – Skream comes with a bloodthirsty remix of Instra:mental’s ‘No Future’ and it’s been shaking the dubstep headz into delirium all over the planet in recent months. Hes taken the original, flipped the script and mutated it into a low down gritty bass work out set to tear the front row ravers to shreds. Caution! Not for the faint hearted.
aa) Skream ‘Minimalistix’‘ – Sinks us 20 leagues into the depths of the dubstep genre and gives us a supreme master class on how to work a hook. Constantly transforming it with a mixture of classic dub effects and unfathomable edits, it’s clear to see why Skream’s diverse and unpredictable productions are in such high demand.

RWINA005 Rain City / Beatingz – Starkey Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Following on from massive releases like ‘Half Man Half Trout’ (Taz Buckfaster) and Freeze Step (South Africa’s Playdoe), Rwina welcomes Philly’s illest, Starkey, back to the fold. ‘Rain City’ is one of those tunes that could only be the product of someone at the peak of their powers. How many big dancefloor tracks manage to completely do away with the snare and rely instead on intense synth work to hype the crowd? How many tracks get support from players such as Skream, DJ Oneman and Noah D yet sound like Kraftwerk and Bach jamming on Jupiter before riding a magic rainbow to DMZ? Believe the hype, Rain City is all that. On the flip, ‘Beatingz’ shows Starkey’s complete grasp of dynamics and arrangement, building gradually and subtly until before you know it, what began as some kind of gully-crunk brain-melt riddim has got you rushing your proverbial tits off. CIV011 Temjin EP – Reso Civil 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finished copy promo. Brand new Reso EP on Civil Music! Finish copy with full colour sleeve artwork. Reso stands out as one of the techiest operators in his field, merging Drum ‘n’ Bass production sheen with teeth rattling dubstep subs and impressively powerful synthlines. ‘Armored Core’ injects a certain Joker styled funkiness into a severely industrial riddim and ‘Hyperglide’ reminds us of Jamie Vex’d's recent treks into ultrafunked dubstep. Dazzling sh*t for fans of Vex’d or Starkey! – Words courtesy of Boomkat.

a1 Reso – Otacon
b1 Reso – Hemisphere
c1 Reso – Armoured Core
d1 Reso – Hyperglide
d2 Reso – Channel Pressure

Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi- house community.

First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape.

Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies.

Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.

An integral part of every 3024 release, Erosie once again blesses this release with his inimitable visual style switching up to a monochrome design this time around.

A) Hear Me (Zomby Remix)
B) Seventy Four (Redshape Remix)

The second half of the Great Lengths Remixes package offers 3 more vividly contrasting interpretations of album tracks.

Almost a year on from the release of his debut album “One” and with ‘Saviour of Techno’ plaudits still bouncing off concrete walls, Berghain lynchpin Ben Klock turns in a remix of Is This Insanity that distils everything inspirational about both the club and city he calls home.

Taking us into extra time is an exclusive to the digital release, Roska‘s ‘Speechless’ version of the dBridge voiced ‘These Words’. A prolific producer and in demand remixer, Roska debuts a new side of his sound that prioritizes space and atmospherics over the dance floor. Stripping the track down to a skittering insect house and minimal percussion focuses full attention on dBridge’s mournful vocal, until muted bass and woodblocks creep into the arrangement and bring proceedings to an uneasy close.
