SUBTLE016 – NCQL – The Framed Dreams Of Loki – 12″ Vinyl
NCQL annouces himself in no uncertain fashion with the anthemic strings of “The Framed Dreams Of Loki”. The track nods to DJ Premier, Prefuse 73 and classic Metalheadz D&B Hidden Agenda style and there’s a subtle (!) reference to a certain classic 90s rave tune in there aswell. It sounds like a mess – it’s anything but ! This is uplifting breakbeat at it’s very best. It’s not often a tune gets played twice by Bailey on his BBC 1Xtra show in the space of a month, so this must be something special. The flipside has a similar organic & uplifting aesthetic. A strutting break is the base for a deluge of warmth in the shape of synths, strings, flutes, harp and vocals – an unusual sound palette for a Drum & Bass track these days but refreshing to hear. DJ Flight thought so and has aired it on one of her “Next Chapter” Rinse FM broadcasts.

I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. This has nothing to do with Aliens, we wouldn’t be that obvious, but it’s the colour chosen by the artists and we think it looks like another great Mars package.Musically, well Edward Oberon & Paul T have conjured up 2 awesome tracks. “Love is” is absolutely sublime with it’s warm bass line and delicate sounds to the breakdown, while keeping the drums nice and punchy, a great tune to roll out. “Absolute” harks back to the deep sounds of old Good looking by the likes of Big Bud or Tayla. Ridiculous sub-lo bass and deep strings, this is how Mars do things and we feel it’s another quality 12″ where the music & the packaging matters.

The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other.Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along.On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London.

London’s Loxy and Finland’s Resound have always been known for their ragga-tinged, hardhittingsound, where each beat slams through with an untouchable technical precision. The two producers have been combining forces for the last three years – including their 2009 anthem ‘Green Destiny / Storyboard’ (Digital Soundboy), remixes for Kryptic Minds, additions to Renegade Hardware compilations, last year’s ‘No Money – Deadly Venom/Driving Force’ (Def Recordings), and their contribution to Exit Records’ ‘Mosaic: Volume One’ (‘Vertigo’) earlier this year. But the duo’s long-awaited debut long player marks their first collaboration that has absolutely no boundaries: as experimental and creative as it gets. True to form, as most Exit Records releases go, ‘Burning Shadows’ sees both producers finding their stride, and treading into surprising new sonic territories from a few different directions. Taking the energy and force of early tech-heavy Drum & Bass, Loxy & Resound bring the genre into a sound that’s uniquely their own.

Exit Boss dBridge put it himself: “I really love how there’s the reggae side to Loxy’s productions; I thought his sound would really come together as a a whole album, especially with the tech side of Resound. Then, just before two minutes in, things quickly take a nasty turn as choppy breaks splinter into pieces and the bassline ‘reboots’ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An aggressive, genre bending, sure fire floor smasher.Letting Go: Teaming up with Kryteria for the flip, a eurphoric, trancey intro leads into a chainsaw reece, setting the scene for the chaotic chiaroscuro to come: beyond the drop sweeping synths and ethereal vocal snippets somehow successfully coalesce with heavily edited breaks and sawing bass, creating a kind of beautiful violence. Subsequently, side effects of Letting Go include spontaneous eruptions of feet on the floor and hands in the air.

FIS is a Wellington local who was a regular customer at the now closed Samurai Store (record store). Inspired by the new music he was purchasing at the time, FIS went hard to work at designing his own unique sound. The results were instantly quality, and a CD handed to label boss Presha began his story. With dBridge and Consequence major fans and an Exit Records release on the horizon, Tokyo Prose sat down with FIS to work on creating a fusion of their 2 styles. ‘The Dares’ was the first off the mark, instantly becoming a playlist favourite with the Exit records family, and more recently, ‘The Truths’ has completed the 10″ in the same grinding, surging roll ‘The Dares’ started with. Sometime you can’t keep a good remix down, and we certainly felt that with these two beastly versions by two very exciting producers of bass music.First up is an exciting producer 2nd Drop have been talkin to for over a year now, Atlanta’s Distal has been making a lot of noise across the bass scene with releases on Tectonic and ? Alongside putting a vast array of music on his own Embassy Label. Inspired by Gerry’s original, Distal has produced something truly brilliant. In stark contrast to the sublime Youandewan remix and Gerry Read’s killer original, Distal grabs the key elements and transforms them into an awesome juke workout. Drawing on an arsenal of stunning original features, this hyperkinetic version is bursting with character, energy and colour.On the flip, we welcome back Sully, who first saw wax on 2nd Drop with the anthemic Give Me Up in mid 2008. As a big fan of 23hz & Numaestro’s original, Sully asked to remix Zumo soon after it’s release in early 2009. Failed hardrives and a quiet 2010 for the label sadly meant this remix with its shifting syncopated beat patterns and moody El-B-esque swing, was sat on. Until now. Beautifully placed to carry on the Sully sound after his critically acclaimed album on Keysound in September, this long overdue remix now gets the release it deserves. Coincidently, the artist on both of the original releases was our mysterious Portugese illustrator and graffiti activist Uiu. So in the spirit of the release we asked him to remix both the original illustrations to create a new version for this release. The featured art ensued. Slightly bonkers, but amazing!

Kowton and Tom Dicicco, residing in Bristol and Manchester respectively, make very different music from one another. Kowton’s seems to come from House, perhaps also Electro and Garage, often quite slow in tempo and hard to pin down to a specific genre. Tom’s music is Techno, bass heavy, melodic, textured and rooted around 125 BPM. With these distinctive styles the idea of a split EP might seem ambitious, but the result is four cohesive but different tracks that show the talents of both artists perfectly in the format of two originals on one side and two remixes of each other’s originals on the other.Tom Dicicco’s original is driven by a low-mid range thick stab and pounding kick drum, littered with intricate but not overbearing hi hat and snare work and some very atmospheric mid range. Kowton’s is subtle and sparse, low fidelity and plodding, with rattling percusion carrying the tune along.On the other side of the record, Kowton’s remix of Tom’s original is driven by an enormous bassline, with an off kilter dubby feel to the slow tempo and genre defying tune. Tom’s remix of Kowton rounds off the EP with a return to stab driven Techno, pulsating, dynamic and trance inducing. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London

Limited to 150 white label pressing. “Look to the east for the coming of a black king.”Having smashed dancehalls and festivals throughout Europe over the last 7 years, Trojan Sound System have returned to the studio following their critically acclaimed debut album on Trojan records, “New Rebel Stories”. The songs evolved on classic Reggae anthems in a live sound system context and are now being translated into studio tracks. Debuted at Outlook festival’s main stage a few weeks ago, it destroyed thousands of reggae, dubstep and jungle heads.Trojan Sound System is the performance unit of legendary reggae label Trojan Records. The Sound comprises Daddy Ad, Earl Gateshead, Superfour, Chucky Banton and Jah Buck, all top performers on the London and European sound system scene. They perform at festivals and reggae events all over the world and have crossed over into Dubstep, Drum and Bass, Hip Hop and Dance music clubs and festivals. Recent main stage slots include Camp Bestival, The Garden Festival, Soundwave festival, Reggae Sun Ska and Outlook festival amongst many others. Last year they also sold out two shows at London’s Koko, a serious feat and a benchmark in this authentic reggae sound’s fanbase and potential and return to Koko on October 15th. They are also playing an in-store at London’s Rough Trade East in late September. “Turn to the East” was written by Superfour, TSS’s energetic and blind vocalist with conscious lyrics and a passionate delivery. The heartfelt chorus is sung by Chucky Banton. The title is inspired by the biblical reference “Look to the east for the coming of a black king” and celebrates numerous black aspirations. Musically, it uses contemporary forms to produce the feel of an ‘80s roots 12” with overpowering bass driving it throughout. Two times DMC champ and Beardyman collaborator, JFB, unleashes a relentless dubstep remix of the track on the B side. There are a string of single releases in the run up to the album on TSS records limited edition white label with more from Toddla T, Jerry Dammers and many more at the production helm with Earl Gateshead and Daddy Ad.

Commercial Suicide is the vanguard of Drum and Bass and has been since it’s inception 10 years ago. Proving a fertile breeding ground for new approaches to dancefloor Drum and Bass and beyond, it is only now after 10 years that a full compilation has taken shape.

Break, Calibre, Klute, Dub Phizix, Vicious Circle; the list of con- tributors reads like a who’s who of contemporary drum and bass production. The Commercial Suicide ‘Compilation’ features 13 of the best d&b tunes of all styles, from established names to the very hottest new faces on the scene.

Oh. My. Gosh. Critical come to conquer with this absolutely dangerous 4-tracker courtesy of Russia’s Enei; a name becoming more familiar by the day as one of the most talented and most exciting new school producers in the game. Snapped up by the ever on point label master Kasra, this EP only makes the prospect of the debut Enei album even more tantalizing.The title track ‘Stone Head’ is a bulldozer of a tune that comes complete with the Andy C seal of approval. A stepper’s paradise with rich kicks and a body-slamming, rolling b-line that’ll send shockwaves through any club. Serious is an understatement! Next up Enei hooks up with vocalist Riya for a proper techy bounder ‘No Fear’ with its undulating bassline that bounces hard taking no prisoners as it moves. The wrecking-ball of the bunch. Moving on and the mood changes slightly to the more flowing sounds of ‘Movin’ Fast’; a naughty, gnarly slice of heavyweight D&B with large feedback-infused bass and sick amen edits that keeps things lively. Wait for the breakdown and switch up though for the killer blow! Then finishing things off in fine style is the heavily hammered Jubei remix of Enei, Eastcolors & Noel’s hit from earlier in the year ‘Cracker’. Keeping the seedy original vibe alive, Jubei goes in deep and comes out the other side with another tough slab of speaker freaker bass and beats. Awesome.

Tes La Rok’s highly anticipated debut album entitled ‘Them’ will finally see the light of day. Tes La Rok made his name in dubstep circles in 2007 with the massive “Round The World Girls Remix” which immediately positioned him as one of the most exciting artists and definitely one to watch. Anthem releases such as ‘Under The Dancing Feet’ remix for Clouds, ‘Wikidness Remix’ for Mungo’s Hi-Fi, and ‘Up In The Vip / Living Fire’ on Dub Police were soon followed by bookings at DMZ in Brixton and dubstep mecca FWD>> at Plastic People. ‘Them’ features thirteen tracks engineered with precision and care. ‘Invasion’ sets the album off in a deep and minimal flavour followed by the dark and abyssal ‘Earth’. With other releases already on Soul:R, Fabio’s Creative Source, Ingredients and more this is one Manchester export that we’ll be hearing a lot more of in then future. ‘Break It’ kicks off with a simple intro with only a teasing glimpse of the bass that’s about to drop but when it does you’d best be ready! A stepper’s paradise then as the staccato break rolls on with deep sub and the gurgling mid-range that serve the ‘break it’ vocal perfectly. A very polished production indeed. ‘Four’ is all pitched down warning sirens and sinister pads from the off, creating an uneasy atmosphere for the crystal clear beats to bump into and move out across another slab of delicate but dangerous D&B for the deeper heads on the floor. Slowing the tempo slightly, and with layers of custom-built percussion adding delicious ear-candy to the emotive collection of synths, strings and marimbas (!), this is the kind of tune where, as was once said about Derrick May’s DJing, you don’t know whether to dance or cry. For Davey Jones’ second voyage, we journey to the other side of the Atlantic to bring you two dark percussive machinations by Brooklyn’s Sharmaji and DJ Wade. Best known as two members of the Sub Swara crew, who released their album “Triggers” to critical acclaim earlier this year, this release finds them exploring more mysterious territory. Sharmaji goes in alone on the A-side with a unique take on the current “percussion and bass” sound with a distinctly darker and warmer edge. A favourite of the likes of Ben UFO, this one does some serious dancefloor damage. The B side goes darker still, with an almost Shackleton-like take on tribal minimalism, disclosing Sharmaji’s day job as a professional Tabla session musician.

This is genuinely new and retro-free music that respectfully flips its sources so hard even the biggest Paradise Garage connaisseurs won’t recognize what just hit them. Or in the words of musical allies Martyn and Pinch, who independently drew the same conclusion: “Sorry, but I don’t hear that whole disco story in there. This simply sounds like you.” Completely failed as a concept album, then – and all the better for it.

And as allways this Quadrant release comes with a sexy cover by designer ‘MESK’State Of Mind gets in on a remix for Rage & Rapture and stretches the trance vibe out and adds their signature SOM tech sound.. Didi’s vocals stay intact and sound even more lush as they did before soaring over the beats like a bird above the clouds. ‘A Healthy Distrust’ is on the flip and this one is one to be noticed. Its minimal melancholic vibe is dark and ominous and will suck you in straight away. Heavy big kicks haunt the track like the drums of a voodoo witchdoctor in the jungle. Its spacious vibe is dreamy and eerie at the same time. Keep on your guard and pay attention to this one.Disc 2 holds ‘The Stars Are Bleeding’ Quadrant shows here at what their best at. Sounding like the cry of a 1000 angels falling from heaven. Beautiful and sad at the same time and sending chills down your spine and back up again. The bass line rolls underneath like a bed of feathers giving hope but the outcome is not certain.Citrus saves the best for last and that is of course the title track ‘Dermaphoria’. Quadrant shows there’s a brighter side and makes sure you know it with this uplifting funker. It is with pleasure that we announce ‘Straitjacket’ and ’4.42 Oz’ find a home on Kapsize! Keeping in the spirit of Joker’s own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output – pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. ‘Straitjacket’ is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the ‘purple’ sound we all know and love at Kapsize – while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Iberian records comes out of a hibernation period with the a series of “Tax Haven” EPs. This first EP comes from a group of producers located in the Barcelona bass enclave and who have been some of the main players in the monthly B.LOW events there. Dedicated to what the label describes as Bass’n'Groove, this EP contains three varied and original sounding tunes with different Bpms suited to the leftfield of various bass music fields (dubstep/funky/future garage etc). First up sees Mr. Gasparov’s “Transient Love” come in the guise of a house influenced little gem of a tune featuring Japanese vocalist G.Rina (who has previosly worked with RSD and Nicolette) who cooes and whispers about transient lovers. Those of you already aquainted with Mr. Gasparov with his release on Soul Jazz Records “Steppas Delight 2″ compilation will recognize the attention to subtle melodic play. There is an overall summery vibe coming here – so something to warm us all up with and make us look ahead to brighter days. Accompany with a mojito and some afternoon sun!Next up sees Nehuen’s “Between Love and Hate” which is a tense stripped down bass’n'beat workout with a persistant bass riff and schizoid strings bringing the darkness. Nehuen is an artist that usually getting support from Dusk + Blackdowns Rinse radio show. There is a grimy and ruff feel here not to dissimilar to some Soulja releases from back in the day. Tuff steppas gear.On the 45rpm flip side Relocate come with their trademark relentness sub bass boogie on “Soul Survivor”. Opening with live drum rolls and low end throbs the tune drops into a driving heads down rhythm, laced with swinging ruff arse beats and a frustrated female vocal hook on the drop – “That I just came…” After which the rhythm section pounds away trying to please her! This is a souped up turbo garage workout pimped for the floor and primed for the bassbins.

RWINA011 – Swindle – Playground – 12″ Vinyl
London grime producer Swindle follows up his incredible Planet Mu EP with another slab of funked-up grime, this time for a rapidly expanding Rwina Records. Swindle’s return marks a slightly stripped-down sound: the funk is meaner, heavier, and nastier. ‘Playground’ grooves on rainbow synths and leisurely, drawn-out melodies, as a boogie bassline carves memorable phrases in the ground below. All of this is shoved in an approachable halfstep template that means the track could just as easily slot into any dubstep set as the grime scene in which Swindle dominates. Did we mention there’s a killer freestyling organ solo in the breakdown?On the b-side, we’re treated to a monstrous remix of SRC’s Rwina anthem ‘Goin Out,’ where that track’s quick and vibrant skip is slowed right down to a trickling drawl. The brusque melodic motifs of the original are flattened out into irresistibly squiggling melodic tangents, and the whole thing is given a muscular makeover that turns the 8-bit funk into lifelike grime. The beats are beefed up — Mario’s emphatic ‘ohs’ hit with every beat like he’s in pain — and the track’s bubble and boil over uncontrollably, a volatile concoction that recklessly sends out unforgettable melodic hooks in all directions.The EP ends with the softer ‘Who’s Quicker’ — which simultaneously speaks to old (and I mean old)-school grime with its barebones percussion breathy samples, but its heads-down meditative bassline speaks to the more reflective side of dubstep. With the Playground EP on Rwina, Swindle reveals what you already knew: that he’s an immensely talented and versatile producer on the top of the grime scene, applying a wide-ranging set of appealing influences to a template that hits home for both grime and dubstep fans. That it comes on Rwina is no surprise: a great producer deserves an equally great label.

Skweee, also known as the synthetic Scandinavian funk, is a worldwide phenomena hailing originally from the frosty alleys of Stockholm and Helsinki. The raw, unpolished electronic funk tracks of this album were recorded in 2003-2006, when the term itself didn’t yet exist. Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue  synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Take a trip through the electro ragga of  ‘War’ and ‘Buttons’ and simmer down with the trippy krautness of ’1000 Years’. Planet Mu up the game once more with their footwork crusade in 2011 with this excellent EP from one of the scene’s top producers, DJ Spinn, showing off his versatile styles across six tracks. ‘Man I Do It’ is also joint release with Chrissy Murderbot’s Loose Squares label, marking the start of a new Chicago-based but internationally-minded imprint dedicated to forward-facing footwork, jit and juke-house sounds. A footwork originator, Spinn started off as a dancer for the House-O-Matics crew in the mid-90s before following with DJing and production, working up to his current status as one of the scene’s most impor-tant figures. The EP mixes styles and sample sources to create a listenable but frenetic blend of tracks, from the more classic chanting juke of ‘Fall Back’, to the futuristic hip hop infused tracks like ‘Studio’ with its shimmering R&B sample and keys that remind the listener of classic jungle, to the off-key synths and vocoder of ‘Man I Do It’, which repeats and loops vocal phrases.The EP also includes the strangely relaxed ‘I Really Feel’, which subtly builds emotional soul strings and looped vocal samples into a barely-there melody, while ‘U Don’t Need’ and ‘Lol’ chop up 70s soul ballads into jagged, cubist shapes.

A two tracker of freshness from Boxcutter, aka Barry Lynn, a questing producer who was taking stylistic chances and constantly mutating his dubstep-based music, long before anyone thought it was time to start discussing “post-dubstep”. This single precedes his new album ‘The Dissolve’, due out in April. ‘Allele’ builds from echoey drums into a tight juke-influenced drum pattern with lots of tight edits, before adding a vocal that hints at old school hardcore, wavering chords and drops, before the whole thing finally resolves into a restrained but ravey breakbeat. ‘Other People’ simply but effectively mixes hazy, live sounding 2-step drums with a lush bitter-sweet melody reminicent of the Drexciya offshoot TheOtherPeoplePlace, which glides subtly through a back-ground of shimmering effects and delays.

And yet again we see him pushing his sonic manifesto ever further. With years of working intently at the nexus of instrumental beats and electronic music, it’s time for The Timps EP.The Timps is Real Electro. Faceless, percussive, underground with a sci-fi feel. Dark, futuristic and dancefloor-oriented, punctuated with elements of 80’s Detroit Techno. Om Unit has blasted his sound into deep space, adding eerie electronic futurism to his niche blend of slow boogie, house, techno and hip-hop beats with those classic analogue synth lines. It nods to both the ever exciting and forever morphing instrumental beat scene and to the heavy flow of early pioneering Detroit techno via UR and the likes of Drexciya/Aux 88. The Timps sees Om Unit interfacing funk and futurism. Analogue bass lines are sequenced, arpeggiated and twisted to devastating effect. Synthetic riffs and atonal sound effects with heavy reverbs, delays and phasers drift along with eerie synthetic strings emphasizing the retro futuristic themes of the music. Remixes come from Frite Nites’ US beat maker and a one-to-watch in 2011, Salva, and Wagon Repair’s Hrdvsion aka Nathan Jonson who, along with brother, Matthew, is part of North American Techno’s first family. Salva’s rework of Prawn Cocktail pulses and throbs towards its intergalactic destination, with beats that speed along with accelerating urgency. Hrdvsion on the other hand takes The Timps and disconnects completely to float off alone into deep space with his epic, eerie and atomspheric reworking. This is Electro. Real Electro. Moody, minimal and 25 years on.
