Randalls Mac 2 recordings showcases another banging release with the return of fast moving breakthrough artist Soul intent. The A side ” Rebel music” punches through with razor sharp breaks that bring the track to some seriously sub low basslines. But Cutline can. The Bristol-based duo are at the forefront of a new breed of multi-genre dance acts, applying their no-nonsense, bass-heavy approach to everything from dubstep to D&B to house. After a year that’s seen Cutline remix The Qemists, J Majik & Wickaman, Nick Thayer and Mindflow (the latter of which smacked into the Beatport charts at #3), Cutline are now finally releasing their debut solo release for Never Say Die. ‘Die For You’ sees the duo in electro-house mood, complete with flowing piano chords, bleeping synths, heavily processed vocals and, of course, a drop that’s filthier than a 5am-kebab. It’s just another example of Cutline’s ability to turn their hand to almost any genre and absolutely smash it. After many painstaking hours of recording the duo take a well earned coffee break, then return to the studio just in time to see the back of the light-footed Blunted Robots man Shortstuff as he runs off chuckling ‘your vocals are mine now!’ Revenge plans are made, vehicles are fuelled up in preparation – but these activities are cut short by the arrival of an email from the culprit – it seems that he took the files back to his HQ for what he describes as a ‘refix’ – with the engines still running, Hem and Shox check out the file and find it to be a work of genius – what they hear is an accelerated kaleidoscopic fusion of on-beat claps and snares in a peak-time northern soul style, super heavy subbass hits and hectic syncopated keyboard chops. Not so much an album preview as a standalone document of a year spent expanding dance floor horizons over (a great many) seas. 3024’s milestone 10th release arrives in November with 2 brand new Martyn tracks as ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Dubbed out ambience rapidly takes root in the gaps between concrete snares & dissonant brass stabs as bass and synths elevate themselves for one last round of call & response sparring before dissolving back into barely audible dialogue. Classically spastic 808 tendrils are underpinned by soaring synth strings as proceedings draw to a juddering close. Capturing 3024’s musical progress with typical accuracy Erosie’s latest sleeve design is perhaps his best yet, echoing the back to basics theme with beautifully austere monochrome geometry curdling into something altogether more volatile at the edges.

The fourth release on the Project Squared label marks our first year in existence. Asusu, the artist who graced the first Project Squared 12” a year ago, returns with “No Kya”, a 144bpm track of introspective, impeccable sound design, a tightly controlled swung beat reminiscent of Garage and a deep bass line. The track follows in the vein of Asusu’s previous 12” releases on Project Squared and Immerse Records (and his forthcoming release on Orca Recordings), whilst pushing his sound into a new, more sedate area. The B side features a remix of “No Kya” by F, a producer who has created a strong reputation for himself in just 2 years of releasing music on 7even Recordings. He has worked with Headhunter, has remixed Jus Wan and has been remixed by Ramadanman and Untold. His album “Energy Distortion” is one of the highlights of 2010 so far. F remixes “No Kya” into a 140bpm club tune. The drums switch between 4/4 and swung patterns, accompanied by rattling percussion and huge sub bass. Dance floor tested with success by Skratch at Sub:stance, Berghain, this track finishes off a superbly balanced release that caters both for intense headphone listening and the peak time dance floor. Man Like Me are no strangers to us here at Black Butter Records, fans of some of their more recent tracks such as ‘London Town’ we SO had to get involved with this new EP. The band are best known for their ska, grime, indie blend. Their brazen lyrics are less self-conscious than some of their musical counterparts, and revel in the realities, perks and calamity of being a young Londoner. The EP contains three brilliant original tracks – ‘Lovestruck’, ‘Why Bother?’ and ‘Run Over’ but more importantly for your dance floors, a nice selection of mixes for you to get your mitts on. Kill Light are first up, recently debuting on Cheap Thrills, that EP received a rapturous reception and got peeps watching. For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).

Finish copy. 24-year-old Kevin McAuley began making music with a two-track mixer, a keyboard and a tape deck. Discovering dubstep years later via the sounds of Mala in the backroom of a Leeds club in 2005, Kevin was inspired to found the city’s first dubstep night, Ruffage, and launched himself into the studio. Since then, Pangaea has released on labels such as Hotflush and Hessle Audio, as well as remix work for Untold and Commix. Hessle Audio was formed in Leeds in early 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley. The label has released tunes by TRG, Martyn, Pangaea, Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Joe and Untold. In addition, Hessle Audio tunes have appeared on compilations by Tempa, Scape, Soul Jazz and Global Underground. Hessle Audio hold a residency at London club Fabric.

The focus of the label is on raw and experimental dance floor tracks, in the best traditions of the UK underground. Hanuman and Atki2 make up Monkeysteak, and along with Dub Boy run the Steak House Records label. Over the past few years they have released 12″s on the Werk and Punch Drunk labels as well as recently featuring on Toddla T’s Fabric mix. Here in the west country Dub Boy runs the Bristol’s best bass music night, the acclaimed Ruffnek Diskotek and has recently been voted one of the cities favourite DJ’s, second only to Joker. This 12″ sees the crew delve into house music with satisfyingly bass heavy results. The A side is a chunky deep house track with a feel good carnival vibe. Earning her stripes in the midst of the UK’s grime scene, she has already produced for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Jammer and Lady Sovereign and she is undoubtedly one of the Anti Social Entertainment clique’s brightest prospects alongside Quest, Silkie, Kromestar, J5, Harry Craze and Heny G. Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. On the flip, ‘The Jester’ zips off in a different direction, carried by tougher, stripped-back drums and myriad 8-bit Gameboy bleeps, zaps and bumps. Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi-house community. First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape. Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies. Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90′s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. More recently Scratcha has collaborated with beacons of the UK Funky scene like Roska, Cooly G, D-Malice and more while still releasing grime anthems like ‘Nasty Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Bullet Ago Fly’. The Jelly Roll Ep has already gained support from Marcus Nasty, Geeneus, Joker, Kode 9, Cooly G, Sinden and more. LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

RUNTIMELP001 Messages from the Void – Elemental Runtime Records 12″ Vinyl x 3
Elemental’s imminent debut LP “Messages from the Void” is a collection of work from the last four years, spanning a range of styles, made using a combination of new and old technologies, including Elemental’s beloved modular synthesizer. He is proud to be able to present it to the world – a favour returned for all of the amazing music that has touched him throughout his years as a music listener and raver. Elemental’s fresh take on the dubstep sound has got both scene stalwarts and eclectic tastemakers singing his praises. Blending components of acid house, Detroit techno, ‘golden age’ drum & bass, vintage dubwise and African rhythm, his sound is rich in texture and musical heritage, yet remains eminently danceable. The North London based producer – Adam Wilson to his friends – started dabbling with production in 1994 with a Roland D5 and Atari ST while he was still at school. Soon after he invested in an Akai S2000 sampler, bought a PC, and the rest, as they say, is history. In the nineties he predominantly focused on making drum and bass and experimental electronica, eventually putting out his first drum and bass release as a white label off his own back. A few years later, together with schoolmate Dario Swade, they formed the breakbeat garage duo Elemental & 3D, releasing on their own label Runtime Records in 2002. A couple of years later after some time abroad, Elemental caught the likes of Search & Destroy on Rinse FM and instantly found the sound he had been looking for: dark, heavy, syncopated beats and bass. Since 2004, Elemental has been focused on bringing his newly developed sound to the masses. Combining dubbed out dirty bass lines with hypnotising rhythms, he has released on labels such as Destructive, Hotflush, Pitch Black, Halo Beats, and his own imprint Runtime, with his seminal track “Soulfire” one of the highlights on Tayo’s Fabriclive mix CD. He was officially the first person to do a live dubstep performance, mixing up and dubbing components of his productions using Ableton Live to rapturous audiences across the world: no set is ever the same twice.

Lisbon-based Octa Push are the newest recruits on the Iberian label and here they come up with the goods on this very distinctive international flavoured 3-tracker – following their debut vinyl release on Soul Jazz Records, Stepper’s Delight 2 compilation. Having blown up the Red Bull Stage at this year’s Sonar in Barcelona and wowed people at Fabric and the Glade Festival with their unique flow; which sees them combine the Portuguese and African sound spliced with elements of UK Garage, Dancehall and Techno. Project Squared aims to release 12” vinyl and download projects that are dance floor focused, that test new ground and that have depth as well as impact. We release music that covers the space between Techno and Dubstep as well as music that stays more firmly within those two genres. Created as a sub-label of Project Mooncircle due to a change in taste from one of the co-ordinators of that label, we were amazed to find two artists (Asusu and Furesshu) that were not signed such was the quality of their music. Still in early stages, the label aims to keep releasing high quality dance music, to gather more artists and to change and evolve as styles change and evolve… Most importantly as our own tastes change and evolve. Project Squared is a sub-label of Project Mooncircle and is affiliated with HHV.de. The label is co-run by Paul Cooper and Gordon Gieseking. Artwork and design is by Gordon Gieseking. Asusu – Now a dubstep producer with his sound tied to the deeper side of things, Asusu has moved from roots in hip hop and trip hop through to garage, dubstep and dub techno. Finish copy. Born and bred in Croydon, 19-year old Justin Cantor, a.k.a Lost, is the latest addition to the acclaimed HENCH crew. Somewhat of a child prodigy, Justin started DJ-ing at an early age, and got his first set of decks aged 12. It was not long before Justin’s attention was caught by the burgeoning dubstep movement; inspired by the sounds of Skream and Digital Mystikz’s, he turned his hand to dubstep production early in 2008. Soon after, his debut release came out on Hatcha & N-Type’s ‘Croydon Dubheads’ EP. He recently was named alongside Emalkay and 16 Bit as one to watch in Radio 1xtra’s ‘Future Sound of Dubstep’. We’re proud to present Lost’s debut release on the Hench imprint and are sure that you’ll enjoy it.
A. IRONHIDE – Lost creates a seriously atmospheric mood from the start in Ironhide, building to a subtle drop of one mean reverbed wobbly bassline. A real creeper of a tune, the open hi-hat progresses throughout, giving way to a double time feel that’ll keep heads nodding. This is one serious weapon for your bag!
AA. SLAUGHTERED – Flip over for another bass-led rhythm, from Lost. Pushing a different tone from the A side (yet no less menacing), ‘Slaughtered’ immediately surrounds you with its rolling filtered wobble. This is one futuristic sounding bass riff. An echoey drum loop helps create an ambience and suspense to this track. With such a distinct vibe, you’re guaranteed to have the crowd putting their screwface’s on when this gets dropped.

With the best of musical and vocal talent passing through, the show has become a watchword for keeping up on the developments in the Bristol sound. Shadz is one of the many talented vocalists to have guested on the show, and before long Wedge invited him into the studio to collaborate. The result is a perfect combination of bass weight beats and soulful songwriting. DP034 When I Look At You – Emalkay Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. In all honesty words cannot really give this track any justice, just listen to it yourself and enjoy this masterpiece that Emalkay has unleashed on to the world. An absolutely essential release for any dubstep fan!

A.ILL – ‘Ill’ builds from an eerie intro, with sultry guitar chords and stabbing beat, slowly winding up to an immense drop. With twisted beats, a punishing b-line, and sweeping atmospherics, this is iller than ‘Ill’ – the bass is so low it will probably make you sick! Grimy and growling, this is a tune that’s going to tear your immune system to shreds.
AA. AMIRAH – Flip over for another dark, deep, no-nonsense number with ‘Amirah’; with ominous atmospherics, a stabbing drumbeat, and oriental female vox, ‘Amirah’ has plenty of spice and a feisty kick! A helicopter chopper sound fades in and out of consciousness and adds to the mayhem. Powerful and intense, with pummelling subs, heavy bassline and a thumping drum kick, ‘Amirah’ is a tune that takes no prisoners!

The classic TRG release. repressed and Re-released. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Subs bulge beneath the broken 2-step riddim and occasional warping midline, building nicely towards the killer switchups on the second drop.

Finish copies. Southern Australia’s Spherix has been plugging away for some time, releasing great tunes on a selection of labels, and Immerse have spotted his talent and snapped up a cracking twelve. In collaboration with London’s Sigha, ‘Seperation’ is a pounding atmospheric thumper, silken threads of sound woven around pulsing beats and surgical percussion,expertly designed and constructed to create perpetual forward motion. ‘Lesser People’ is somewhat harder – crisp drums, ticking hats and solid bass drones flying past at supersonic speed as insane tech FX rip the veryair asunder. Headed up by renowned bassmusic ambassador Baobinga, known for his massive releases on Soul Jazz (with Tayo & Spyda) and Trouble & Bass (with Detroit’s DJ Nasty), as well as his wide-ranging DJ sets across the globe (including an appearance at Fabric’s 10th Birthday this October), the first release on Build sees Baobinga joined by regular partner in crime I.D. (Boka, Mata-Syn, Cool & Deadly). Limited Edition Purple Vinyl. Scratcha DVA is not just the charismatic host of Rinse Fm’s breakfast show, he’s one of the UK’s most accomplished producers. An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90′s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. More recently Scratcha has collaborated with beacons of the UK Funky scene like Roska, Cooly G, D-Malice and more while still releasing grime anthems like ‘Nasty Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Bullet Ago Fly’. The Jelly Roll Ep has already gained support from Marcus Nasty, Geeneus, Joker, Kode 9, Cooly G, Sinden and more. Built around a super-synthetic bassline its title track sqirms and shakes around stinging snares whilst ‘Guro Triba’ is a little on the more conventional side of House & Funky. Remixes comes from True Tigers Sukh Knight, who gives Nasty Nasty Nasty the creeping dubstep treatment, whilst Funky don Roska gives it his unique “Kicks and Snares” midas touch.
