MJAZZLP05 – DiamonD EyE – Moments In Life – CD
With an interest sparked at a young age by the ‘liquid’ sounds d & b and artists such as Calibre, Marky, XRS and Artificial Intelligence, Diamond EyE starts his quest within the scene. During these formative years he has notched up releases with Fokuz, Mr Joseph’s Fizzy beats, Manifesto and Inperspective recording alongside head honcho Chris INP. His output via MJAZZ has included ‘Temple Dub’ on the Modernists 2 LP, a stunning take on Justice’s classic ‘Aquisse’ and a remix of ‘Sand delay’ for Justice/Metro 839 LP. Fast forward and we find the 23 year old North Londoner making a sophisticated, mature music which far out ways his years, the culmination of which makes up his debut LP ‘ Moments in life’. This project has received support from Stunna, Loxy, Gremlinz, Muted, Spindall, Ash-A-Tak, Mr Joseph, Dave Owen, Lee, Flight, Bailey, Laurent Garnier and Gappa G. ABSCD005 – Getz & Nuage – Anywhere Here LP – CD
Absys presents the long-awaited album from the Russian duo of Getz & Nuage – ‘Anywhere Here’. Both producers have been actively involved – as a duo, as well as solo – on drum & bass scene for some time and become known as not only prolific and versatile, but most of all, musically sensitive which gained them quite an acclaim among the deeper and softer d’n'b listeners. This sensitivity turned out to be far from accidental, what has been proven by many well-received releases of this duo. Following up, the guys decided to focus on new material, broader not only in terms of volume, but also of the themes covered. So, what to expect from ‘Anywhere Here’? The most appropriate – and at the same time the shortest – answer would be, simply, d’n'b – no more, no less, without pigeonholing or labeling. Yet, the musical content is quite futuristic and ‘modern’, but it’s still d’n'b. What’s certain is that this content will surely please those who are into minimal sounds (‘Insomnia Shadows’, ‘Is the Way’), experiments (‘Anytime’), melodies and soul (‘Open Your Heart’), but also those who dig the less (‘Gallactica’) and more (‘Overcoder’) broken stuff. Add to this some deep and flowing rhythms, like ‘Morning Coffee’, and you have a recipe for a diverse, but at the same time coherent album, especially in terms of sound and themes. Despite the obvious musical diversity, the artists managed to maintain a consistent, distinctive futuristic style of their album, thus creating a perfect musical background for an exciting and simultaneously blissful journey through drum & bass Milky Way. Put on your spacesuit and hop on the board of Absys shuttle. Prepare for launch in 3.. 2.. 1.. Music mastered by LXC. Beautiful artwork painted and layouted by Magda Zieba

REDSEAL010 – Need For Mirrors – Fishscale / Retrograde – 12″ Vinyl
Solid White vinyl 12″. After their recent Samurai Red Seal debut, Mosus and HLZ aka Need For Mirrors return with yet another diverse duo of tunes further displaying their confident versatility. ‘Fishscale’ is disturbingly heavy in the low end, so much so we advise planning your sets around it as it makes most other recent Drum and Bass tunes sound like the bass kill switch is on. The tunes strident step and familiar vocal connect the dots between vintage Jonny L and Doc Scott productions and the year 2011. ‘Retrograde’ is the darkest tune to ever be released on Samurai Red Seal. It’s ragged beauty caught our attention instantly though, and many a crowd has fallen victim to its cute malice. DJ Bailey (Metalheadz / 1Xtra) has been one of this tunes strongest supporters. Released on solid white vinyl and digital.

DMND003 – Heavy1 – Xiphactinus / Xiphactinus (Lenzman Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Proving once and for all that drum & bass is a global movement, here we have a single produced in Japan, A&R’d in Switzerland, remixed in Holland and distributed via the UK across the world. Thankfully the majority of these processes are done via the internet – otherwise we’re sure someone would have something to say about the carbon footprint of this one! Japanese producer Heavy1 takes to the helm for Demand Records’ third release, following two incredible singles featuring music from Spectrasoul, BTK, Nymfo, Lost Sequence and Codeshaper. Here you’re offered no reduction in quality as Heavy1 turns out an impeccable ride through drum & bass territory. Slowly opening with scattered hi hats and punctuating kicks, it’s not long before ‘Xiphactinus’ (a predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous period if, like us, you had no idea what this was…) bares its prehistoric teeth, snapping at you with crisp snares and expertly placed sound effects. Basslines judder and bounce back and forth before engulfing you in their mighty jaws! This is undoubtedly the start of great things for Heavy1. On the flip, Demand enlists yet another well known name to add some remix action to the mix. This time it’s Metalheadz’ Lenzman who steps up, taking ‘Xiphactinus’ down a whole new aesthetic path. Turning a track that holds a brewing, unspoken menace into one with a euphoric edge isn’t an easy task, but Lenzman’s electro leads and warming bass notes manage it effortlessly. With a wave of new material ready for the second half of the year, Demand Records shows no signs of slowing their already incredible pace. Clearly a nomination for one of 2011’s hottest new D&B labels.

INNA037 – Anile – Exclusion Zone – 12″ Vinyl
In 4 years Anile has steadily established himself as a underground D&B solider. This release for Spirits label is a absolute stomper ’Exclusion Zone’. Real heavyweight D&B with no cheese. The flip “Code Of Conduct” by Anile & Dakosa rolls out controlled techoid fun pressure with super weighty low end sub-bass . Sinister music for the real D&B heads, perfect to mix, perfect to make you move. DJ Support Loxy, Spectrasoul, D Bridge, Total Science, S.P.Y, Lenzman, Ink, Manifest, Raiden, Spirit Instra:mental and Gremlinz, Anile is certainly one to watch in 2011.

DSM019 – June Miller – Strike Anywhere – 12″ Vinyl
With DSM having taken a turn down slightly darker paths with some of its more recent releases. Dutch uber-duo June Miller serve up two nasty half stepping tracks to continue this trend. Razor-sharp, scattering drums and growling bass pound their way unrelentingly throughout the a side ‘Strike Anywhere’ with the wailing synth line that sits a top these two elements adding a distinctly nervous, tension building atmosphere. With this outfit having made their name in the deeper, dare we say it, more ‘minimal’ side of the genre, this track shows their adeptness at creating devastating dance floor tunes too. Rising start Circa joins the fray from the B-Side ‘Glass jaw’. The subtle, tiptoeing of the intro makes way and distorted, warping bassline after the dramatic pause before the drop-people won’t know what hit’em! More crisp, 2-step beats drive the track forward while diminutive rolls on the hats and cinematic strings and chords adding points of interest throughout. This is a no holds barred straight up screw face slice of wax. You have been warned.

New D&B Promos

BMT005 – Blu Mar Ten – Five Summers / Still The One – 12″ Vinyl
Full colour sleeve. Full colour, matt sleeve designed by ithinkitsnice Blu Mar Ten – Five Summers: Destined to become the soundtrack to a thousand outdoor parties, Five Summers’ builds on the cheeky bass and lolloping rhythmic blueprint laid out by 2009’s ‘If I Could Tell You’, blossoming into a full-blown cacophony of organic and synthetic instrumentation. Heavenly guitars and choral vocals blend seamlessly with glitched out drum edits showcasing Blu Mar Ten’s unique talent for carving out a strictly sensual and feminine sound in a genre dominated by masculinity. Blu Mar Ten & Inside Info – Still The One: Following a chance meeting in a Slovakian D&B club Blu Mar Ten & InsideInfo raised a few eyebrows when they announced a collaborative project early in 2011. With a solid discography of dancefloor smashers on labels that include Critical, Viper, Mainframe, Horizons and Breed, InsideInfo is renowned for his thundering basslines and pounding drums. Coupling his skills with Blu Mar Ten’s denser orchestration has given birth to Still The One, the first mutant offspring of this unlikely musical hookup. An introduction of skittering arpeggios and hissing cinematic drones gives way to rasping bass stabs, aggressively popping house chords and a large diva vocal. Layers of 80s riffs and crafted soundscapes are all powered along by trademark InsideInfo drum-craft, proving once and for all that dominating a dancefloor doesn’t have to come at the cost of emotional content. With resident designer ithinkitsnice on artwork duties Five Summers / Still The One is a clear indication of the quality to be expected from the forthcoming Love Is The Devil LP. Blu Mar Ten & InsideInfo receive regular DJ support from: Marky, London Elektricity, Doc Scott, Futurebound, Teebee, Instra:mental, D Bridge, Hype, John B, Logistics, Ed Rush, Marcus Intalex, Utah Jazz, Makoto, Spectrasoul ,Simon Bassline Smith, Mutated Forms, Randall, Kasra, Ulterior Motive, B Complex, Apex, SPY, Craggz, DKay, Seba, Loxy, Ink, Lynx, John B, Data, Nerm & D-Kode, Annie Nightingale, Crissy Criss, Mosus, A Sides, Tom Middleton, ASC, State of Mind, Lomax, Alleycat, Big Bud and many more.

AM006 – Alaska – Boreal / Isochime – 12″ Vinyl
Alaska returns from The Mesozoic Era wilderness and drops the 6th 12” on the ambient-jungle label Arctic Music. Boreal kicks off in true Alaska fashion with vocal loops, deep bass subs, ambient horns and layers of swirling pads sending Boreal into ambient bliss, but it’s the breaks that turn the track on its head with it’s crunchy and heavy patterns that keep the head nodding and feet shuffling. Isochime see’s Alaska return to his early Good Looking Records roots with it’s mesmerising pad swirls and guitar riffs. Sine wave bass notes take care of the bottom end and just when you think everything is relaxed along comes a powerful compressed Amen break thundering like a tornado that destroys anything in it’s path. The unmistakable sound of Isochime. Timeless ambient-jungle from Alaska.

VSN011 – Noisia & Phace – Program / Regurgitate – 12″ Vinyl
Noisia’s uncompromising approach to dance music has never been more keenly felt. While they’re turning out remixes for commercial acts such as Katy Perry and Deadmau5 that sound just as filthy as any usual Noisia production, the Dutch trio are also sticking to their D&B roots with releases on their own Vision imprint. For Vision’s latest release label bosses Noisia team up with long-term collaborators, Phace, to whip up ‘Program’. As you’d expect from one of their collabs, this one is hard and heavy complete with an intense breakdown reminiscent of Wolfgang Gartner’s ‘Undertaker’. Winding bass notes finish the job and rib-crushing subs will have the dancefloor churning every time this drops. Flip over and ‘Regurgitate’ brings you in slowly, stuffing you gently with an epic atmosphere and sultry guitar licks. Looped vocals bring you up to the drop before a trademark Noisia bassline pukes all over your best dancing shoes. If this one doesn’t get people ‘going sick’ we don’t know what will!

RDR003 – Magnus / Ultrasonic7 – Summer’s Here (Break rmx) / Lips They Move (Nymfo’s moving lips VIP) – 12″ Vinyl
The second instalment of the Radar Remixes hails in two like-minded spirits that each take on a classic Belgian house track. Dutchman Nymfo takes on Ultrasonic7′s ‘Lips They Move’ and turns it into a funky summertime tune with an absolutely exquisite hiphop  break. Full vocal and full on instrumentation guarantee you’ll keep your ears to the speaker. Combining high-pitched beats, funky licks and a wobbly,  A.I.-esque bassline, Nymfo delivers something quite unlike his usual work, but does it amazingly well. Expect this to go straight to daytime radio! The producer’s producer, Mr DNAudio and Sir Synergy, the one they call Break, steps up to rework ‘Summer’s Here’ by Magnus, aka dEUS’ Tom Barman and techno legend CJ Bolland. He reconstructs the track, using vocals, Rhodes, guitar and subtle percussion, and works gently towards the drop which is as catchy as it is enticing: clean, crisp breakbeats are supported by the deepest dub style bassline you’ve heard to date and together they keep things rolling effortlessly. The previous 12″ of remixes was supported by Andy C, Danny Byrd, Simon Bassline Smith, Camo&Krooked and Hamilton, and this one has already received plays by Total Science, Netsky, SPY, Fred V & Grafix and London Elektricity

D&B Restocks CD Albums

SUICIDECD009 – Amit – 9 Times

New Bass Music CD

BUILDCD001 – Baobinga & Co. – Joint Ventures – CD
Cross the Bear Pit, away from the corporate shopping hell of Cabot Circus, and keep walking, up past the Blue Mountain club, Mickelburgh’s Pianos, and the strange church that hides behind a layer of corrugated sheet metal. Once you get past Turbo Island, home to some of Bristol’s most dedicated professional drinkers, you’re pretty much in the heart of creative Bristol – Stokes Croft. And right in the centre of Stokes Croft, housed in the basement of an disused bank vault, sits the studio Baobinga shares with I.D., the studio in which the majority of Joint Ventures was created. Across the road is Idle Hands, the new record shop that sprang from the demise of Rooted and which recently saw 2562 turn up for a 3hr in-store session. A few doors up the road is The Croft, home to Pinch’s monthly shindig Dubloaded. This is the UKs largest decriminalized graffiti zone, and new pieces from the cream of the Bristol graf scene are constantly emerging, tying the blank spaces together between chic new cafes and fried chicken joints. Right now, there’s a buzz about the place, as upmarket and no-market are forced to co-exist and build relationships. Joint Ventures, the first album-length project on Build Recordings, is fully a product of Bristol, and particularly Stokes Croft. Whether re-upping on the caffeine in the Algerian cafe across the road while uploading stems for Jack Sparrow over in Leeds, or waiting in the doorway, sheltering in the rain as Guido makes his way down from Gloucester Road, the sense of being at the centre of creative Bristol is palpable throughout. The collaboration with Mancunian house-meister xxxy started across the road from the studio with a full english breakfast at the Bank; the percussive clanks and clunks of ‘Proper’ were built by recording Kowton walking over the metal grate at the bottom of the stairs to the studio. And just as Bristol has built a reputation for an open-minded, forward thinking approach to dance music, rooted in a solid soundsystem culture and evolving through jungle and dubstep to wherever we are now, so Baobinga has developed a reputation as one of the most exciting producers operating today. Take ‘Rockfall’, the collaboration with acclaimed Purple pioneer Gemmy. Without hearing the track, maybe you’d expect Gemmy’s distinctive basslines over Baobinga’s rowdy bashment-inflected drums; but the actual product is lithe, rolling halfstep D’n'B with exquisite sonic detail. Indeed, none of the collaborations sound forced or disjointed, and none of them can be easily picked apart – a testament to the quality of musicians involved, and the wide-ranging yet still focussed approach Baobinga has brought to bear on the project. As a label, Build has received strong support from some of the most respected names operating right across dance music, from Craig Richards to Sinden, Modeselektor to Jackmaster, Mark Pritchard to Mary Anne Hobbs. On this album, Baobinga has built music with some of the most innovative producers working in dance music: Ginz, Guido, Jack Sparrow, Kowton, Geiom and more. Just as he is physically situated at the beating heart of creative Bristol, so this album confirms his position at the pulsating centre of UK bass music – thoroughly unconcerned with genre, tempo or anything other than pushing the boundaries of kinetic, percussive, colour-soaked dance music.

2NDRP12011 – LV & Message To Bears ft Zaki Ibrahim – Explode – 12″ Vinyl
The second release from south London based LV on 2nd Drop, but this one is a little different, you might say more international. Basking in the afterglow of their much hyped Kwaito inspired bomb, Boomslang on Hyperdub last year, the LV trio stick the brakes on and crank up the soulful vibes for this release. With well established roots in South Africa, a recording session at the Red Bull studios in Cape Town saw LV record a number of vocal collaborations with the honeyed-voiced Zaki Ibrahim. Zaki’s Canadian and Burmese heritage not provides her with striking looks but also politically charged ammunition for her lyrics. The third angle of this collaboration is a young band from leafy environs of Oxford. After discovering Message to Bears on YouTube trying to make more dubstep / electronic music, 2nd Drop saw the opportunity to link the disparate groups together. Explode was created, with M2B providing lush piano motifs and subtle strings. So, with such great music and beautiful vocals, we had a hard time limiting our remix options! 1st up is the mysterious Mothy with his Implosion redux. Sounding like Mount Kimbe on Novocaine, the original is dubbed, filtered and squeezed into a cerebral paste.

BOKALP001 – Von D – Daydreaming LP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Limited Edition 2×12” Vinyl Version of the Album, housed in a custom sleeve. ‘Daydreaming’ is the debut album release from Paris based artist Von D on Boka Records. A fusion chef of bassweight, Von D has deftly sliced into unpredictable genres, concocting strange and beautiful new forms. The album sees Von D collaborating with the internationally renowned Foreign Beggars, Phephe, David Boomah (vocalist for Shy FX Murderation), Riya & Mr Lager, while his previous work has also been remixed by a host of respected dubstep DJ’s including Skream and Tes La Rok. Born into the cultural melting pot of the Paris suburbs, Von D found his soul’s conduit in a beaten up old drum kit. Whilst the riddims of King Tubby alongside the foetal jungle of Photek and Serge Gainsborg were initial inspirations, after forging a successful path as a sound engineer Von D honed his sound sculpting skills to a razor sharp edge. Von D’s productions have been picked up by Skream, arguably one of dubstep’s most successful artists, who snapped up a release for his label Disfigured Dubs. DJ Chef released Von D’s ‘Show Me’ on his Sub Freq imprint, which quickly became one of the most talked about releases of 2009 – so much so that three time DMC World Champion DJ Craze has been supporting the track in recent mixes. Not one to be complacent, Von D’s kept up the pressure with releases on Black Acre, Tempa, Soul Jazz and Argon – enough to attract the attention of BBC Radio 1’s Gilles Peterson who has included a track for his hotly anticipated ‘Brownswood Bubblers’ compilation album. IDLE006 – Szare – Volya / Action Five – 12″ Vinyl
“It’s an exciting time for Idle Hands, as the fledgling label mutates into a many headed musical beast. After the Bristol record shop Rooted Records sold its last chunk of wax late last year, Idle boss Chris Farrell has carried the torch and opened the Idle Hands store on Stokes Croft in Bristol city centre. Just as the shop highlights Idle Hands’ dedication to its hometown, this latest release on the label marks the first time the music has come from outside the city limits. Szare will probably not be a name familiar to many, having covertly established himself on the lauded Horizontal Ground label, basking in the stamped white label anonymity of deep, troublesome 4/4. Now with this release and his Syndrom Z label, the producer steps just a little into the light to expose his unique abstractions on swung techno. ‘Volya’ ploughs a sparse and percussive furrow, while ‘Action Five’ boasts a wistful, dreamlike melodic bent to leave you with two distinctly different, but equally enthralling cuts.”

OIRECS001V – Benga / Kutz – Transformers / Shake it – 12″ Vinyl
Oi! Recordings, is the new label that grew out of the Oi! Parties in Amsterdam. Oi! Recordings is bringing the sound and vibe that you know from their parties; good & high quality party tunes. Allot of the forthcoming releases will be coming from dutch, but also from UK artists that need to be heard! Names like: Dion47, Mucky Muxx, Akkachar & Taz Buckfaster, Maikon, Soul Sinners, Gomes, FS Green allready released on the Oi! Recordings digital label. DJ Gomes managed to get two amazing tracks from Benga and Kutz that screamed to be on vinyl! ’Transformers’ from Benga is on his Youtube and soundcloud for a while as well as a regular climax in the man’s dj sets. Transformers is that tune all the fans are waiting for! As described by Benga himself: sounds horrible when I play it out! HIT!!!! You think that’s it? Flip it over for KUTZ! Shake it… Monsterous tunage once again. Wobbles all over the place, big big big!!

ZAUDIO023 – Depone – Test Me – 12″ Vinyl
Yes yes people, we are back!! It’s been a while, but we are going to be hitting you with some seriously good tunes this year, so watch this space. Anyway, on to the music ;) If you like you tunes big fat and heavy like an elephant on steroids, then get ready for an absolute pasting from new boy on the circuit, Depone! Depone is a producer that has really caught our ear at the Z Audio towers of late and when you hear these tunes, I’m sure you’ll understand why. All 3 tunes are fierce, dirty, gritty, disgusting and overall very well produced. The great thing about Depone is that he manages to create in your face music without pointlessly wobbling the LFO filter. There’s some real depth to this young talent and I’m sure you’ll be hearing some more great music from Depone in the very near future.

PRDM004 – Rie Lambdoll / Dub Magus From Beruit – Smell Of You (More Mix) – 10″ Vinyl
RIE LAMBDOLL, known for electronics duo CROSSBRED and respected among activities in variety of fields, and free form unit DUB MAGUS FROM BEIRUT arising from the breakup of the post hardcore band beirut5 in the search of even more inspiring sounds. 10inch split coupled with two geniuses prominent in the increasingly chaotic Osaka underground has come out!! RIE LAMBDOLL side includes deep and uplifting track “SMELL OF YOU” with electro-taste elusive bass, melancholy synths/ noise, and own voice samples flying in the atmosphere. A blissful killer-trip drowning into the aesthetic world of RIE LAMBDOLL’s harmony of beauty and darkness. Mastering and cutting done by DUB PLATES & MASTERING、RASHAD BECKER lead to bass conscious result pointing out a link between recent new breed bass music. DUB MAGUS FROM BEIRUT includes two evil minded tracks going from down tempo/ minimal dub to black metal-ish minimal hardcore. In “MARIKA”, restless wave of triple time beats calmly pushes the fetal movement deep inside, and tremolo lights illuminates the seafloor of echoes. From the subtle yet profound soundscape of spacious synths and rising noise, in “Vengeance Is Mine”, death voice, metal percussion, Chinese gong, noise etc. welters into a thrash tune. A short track of ill refrains and robust kicks lights up your impulse. Their extensive insights and upcoming works are not to be missed.

SOTE004 – Crushington & Black Sun Empire – Shudder / Wolf Moon – 12″ Vinyl
Black Sun Empire represent the finest in dark and techy dancefloor drum and bass. Since bursting onto the scene back in 2000, they’ve continued to develop their own unique style and sound, releasing numerous singles as well as four full-length LPs. 11 years down the line, its not all about dnb anymore for the guys. The sideproject  ‘Shadows Of The Empire’ became a fullgrown dubstep offshoot for their own powerfull dubstep productions. With the hitsingles ‘Hypersun’ and the ‘The Invasion’ they continued to show off their abnormal talent of creating high quality productions. The highlight of the label was unleashed in 2010 with the dubstep doublepack part of the ‘Lights and Wires’ album! For the 4th release of the label Black Sun Empire teams up with their allies from the other side of the world Crushington! Let the music speak for itself, this is the unmistakable sound of the Empire and the raw edge of the Crushington, the perfect combination! BIG!!

PIPS015 – Arkist – Rendezvous / Fill My Coffee – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips are very proud to present 2 emotive slices of bass-led dancefloor funk from another hugely talented Bristol based producer – Arkist. His reputation has been building this year, with a gorgeous melodic edge to his futuristic beats, and a unique sense of space and rhythm. Having heard his sound develop over the last year it’s a real pleasure to present 2 tracks which have been on constant rotation round here, and out in the clubs we play in… ’Rendezvous’ clashes classic 2-step garage vibes with amazing melancholy synth work to create a future bass steppa that gets an amazing response every time it is dropped… ’Fill your Coffee’ comes with a lo-slung funked out twist, culminating in a rushy pad breakdown that just sounds incredible on a big system believe me! With gigs at Fabric & two American tours under his belt, & a killer 12” with Kidkut coming on Hotflush, Arkist is poised for great things in 2011. Tracks already getting support from DJs as diverse as Ben UFO (Hessle), Boddika (Swamp 81), Alexander Nut (Eglo), Mr Scruff, & many more.

Plug into this immersive, transporting song and you’ll be inspired. For the bass heads, the flip is a dub. A deep and heavy, dancefloor-shaking stepper. DP050 – Caspa – Fulham 2 Waterloo – 12″ Vinyl
Having passed the landmark half century in releases for Dub Police it is time to celebrate, and what better way to do so then to hand the reigns over to label head Caspa for the big 50! Following the release of the anthemic ‘Back For The First Time’ last summer on Sub Soldiers – which was vocalled by Mr Hudson as ‘Love Never Dies’ – and the brutal ‘Neck Snappah’ earlier this year, Caspa returns with the huge ‘Fulham 2 Waterloo’. Driven by a hard 4×4 kick and galloping snares, the rhythm is overlayed with the snap of the half step snare providing an impactful percussive counterpoint that flips between house and dubstep. With the tough dancefloor foundations layed, it is the sharp, rave-inflected lead hook that provides an addictive rallying cry for club audiences everywhere. Having first been aired by Annie Mac on Radio 1 back in February, it has been getting heavy club support from Atrak, Breakage, Mista Jam, Annie Mac, Zinc and Emalkay to name a few. As the man behind Dub Police, as well as affiliated labels Storming Productions and Sub Soldiers, and an irrefutably top class producer in his own right, Caspa’s influence on the scene has been profound. His continuing musical evolution and willingness to champion new talent has marked him out as an international ambassador for dubstep and he continues to spread some of the most exciting sounds to come out of the UK in years.

RS1104 – The Chain – Lostwithiel EP – 12″ Vinyl
The Chain are Dan Foat and Nathan Boddy who control things at the R&S studio. Both initially DJs from a deep house background they have begun to explore the boundaries of electronic music outside of the confines of the 4/4. The EP ranges from the uncategorisable rolling, jilted live percussionof the title track and it’s deeper, glitchy dub to the post apocalyptic, post-hardcore onslaught of Maje which tips it’s hat to the heritage of the label. Already picking up rave reviews at Little White Earbuds and from the likes of The Chemical Brothers, Appleblim, Nick Hopper and Trevor Jackson, this is just the beginning for The Chain.

Transition Presents “Swarf Pot” Dubstep Compilation

Transition Presents “Swarf Pot” Dubstep Compilation

Posted 23 November 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Transition. It’s a word that takes you from one place to another. It’s also a small studio round the back of an unassuming building in South London. More specifically, it’s the working HQ of Jason Goz, the man who helped shape the dubstep sound with his Neumann cutting lathe, and his higher level ears of course.

It is the first port of call for a whole roll-call of artists from original nuttahs like, Mala, Coki, Loefah, Burial, Kode 9, Skream and Benga to the international artists who only want their shit cut at Transition, as well as a heady brew of musicians including everyone from Jah Shaka to funky man of the moment DJ Paleface to avant garde ambient don Christian Fennesz. Basically, Jason is sound, in both senses of the word.

Initially, most of the custom came from the reggae community. “We stuck a load of flyers out and waited. I learnt my craft cutting reggae. It’s a serious situation when you have two different sounds playing a clash and you are cutting for both sides there is no room for error.” Word soon spread and thanks to some flyers in Big Apple and a call from Magnetic Man’s Arthur ‘Artwork’ Smith, Jason became the man that all the early dubstep producers went to for their dubs. “I just got into work one day and I was busy.” People also knew that what happens in Transition stays in Transition. “We’ve got to keep secrets. I can’t tell anyone what the DJ before has cut, that’s an unfair advantage. Cutting engineers have to know how to keep quiet.” Guys like Joel from Scratch Perverts, or guys from the garage days. I just want to be the best cutting engineer in the world, it’s that simple. It’s not really a money thing. Obviously I want to earn money but more than that I want to be the best. You don’t see many cutting engineers in the club, but I do actually like the music. I wouldn’t do it if
I didn’t.”

It’s also why he runs two labels, one named after the cutting house Transition and another named Ringo, after Jason’s sadly departed dog who would be there, lying under the desk at 2am when Jason would be cutting and cutting for late night sound-clash business. The labels are going strong which is why we have compiled these CDs of past and future releases.

Forthcoming – Mount Kimbie “Crooks & Lovers” LP [Hotflush Recordings]

Posted 24 May 2010 | By | Categories: misc, news, tracks | No Comments

Adding a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – are set to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Crooks & Lovers’ on Scuba’s Hotflush label in July.

Mount Kimbie’s first two EPs – ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds.

Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released last year with ‘Sketch On Glass’ recently undergoing reworks from the likes of Falty DL, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio.

Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.”

Mount Kimbie

Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope.

The band’s sound and response to the dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.

Introducing new label: Dark Arx

Introducing new label: Dark Arx

Posted 07 January 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks | 2 Comments

Dark Arx is an electronic music label specialising in music at the fringes of all forms of techno and bass music.
For its debut release due to be released on 18th January 2010, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence.

Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce.

Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).

Here is a recent review from Resident Advisor‘s Max Bacharach:

Speaking to The End in mid-2008, Exit boss and Autonomic mastermind Darren White, AKA dBridge, had these words to say about his beloved genre: “…when I listen to tunes from the last two or three years and compare them to tunes from the era that I believe it was at its most interesting, they don’t even compare. This isn’t music that people outside of our scene can look to, and that’s a big beef of mine.” Jump ahead to early 2010 and—thanks to the increasingly wide-ranging output of Instra:mental, SpectraSoul, Data and co—things don’t look quite so bleak. In fact, we might forgive Mr White for having been a little overly pessimistic: it’s his label that gave birth to 2009′s best drum & bass full-length, an album which, in drawing together influences as diverse as Ed Rush, OMD and Autechre (and wilfully refusing to tick any obvious dance floor boxes at that), positively commands attention.

Judging by the maturity of the thirteen pieces on display, the culprit—Australia’s Cam McLaren—is no newcomer to the scene. Take the driving “From a Distance,” a darkly somatic voyage into post-apocalyptic diaspora (think Vangelis remixed by Photek, or vice versa) made in collaboration with fellow NonPlus operative ASC, or the dreamy “Lime Green,” which for over three minutes swirls and hovers in a state of blissed-out abandon before a slinky rim-tap snap lumbers into view. Clearly, no easy points are out to be scored. Things are equally unyielding at the slower, garage-leaning tempo of “Feeling Like We Do,” which sounds like Burial under general anaesthetic (a good thing, believe me), and the stuttering, morphine-addled “Short Lived,” perhaps the darkest piece on what, at times, is a doggedly bleak album.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. Opener “Long Lies,” although fragile, offers a tentative glimpse of hope, like the first light of morning breaking over an uncertain horizon, while “Fog,” arriving deep into proceedings, serves to alleviate the mounting tension with flickering keys and warm, glowing subs. Those in search of dance floor firepower, meanwhile, need look no further than the T2-drenched techstep growl of “Pseudo Echo” (a lethal, stripped-back roller), or the hyper-compressed bass dynamics of “Reflex Reaction,” which no doubt benefits from Instra:mental’s recent excursions into full-blown stepping territory. Sure, it’s not your average main room fodder, but, patently, this is not your average drum & bass LP. It’s far, far better than that.

In fact, there’s only one real blooper on the album: the schmaltzy “Life Is Timing,” which, sadly, delves a little too far into the champagne sipping terrain evoked by its title, and fails to integrate with what, taken in whole, is a remarkably coherent piece of work. What marks it out—and to a degree which, in the recent history of drum & bass, only dBridge’s The Gemini Principle equals—is its refusal to make concessions in the name of sales, airplay, MC compatibility and such like. There are no “big tunes,” no crushing breaks, no epic drops and, most pleasingly in a genre blighted by trite samples, no vocals. It’s simply one man’s vision of dark, futuristic bass music, and a powerful articulation—indeed, the most powerful one yet—of the Autonomic sound. Music that those outside the scene can, and really should, look to “.

New D ‘n’ B CD

noncd2
NONCD2 Big Skeleton – The Upbeats Non Vogue CD
If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right?
Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

What the DJ’s are saying!

Marcus Intalex: “Two of the most innovative and versatile producers on todays scene. Whenever I get something new from these guys I instantly stop what I’m doing, knowing full well I am just about to hear something totally fresh.”

Dieselboy: “Once again redefining the future sound of neuro funk nastiness. Buy on sight!”

Ed Rush: “Everything these guys do demands immediate attention. Drop whatever you’re doing and go grab Big Skeleton… sick, sick, sick! They specialize in dance floor artillery of serious weight as we all know from their releases in the past. This album is no different and is a brilliant testimony to their talents. Also includes one of the best dubstep tunes I ever heard… Ship It!”

Be it the haunted click’n’bass soul of ‘Bones’ (featuring Ned Worboys of Harbour City Electric), the sub-grinding, stream-ofconsciousness narrative driven breakbeat insanity of ‘Carousel’ (featuring MC Kemo from Germany), their speaker-rupturing foray into dubstep on ‘Macabre’ (co-produced by the mysterious Crushington) or the drum’n’folk atmospherics of ‘Through The Night’ (featuring award-winning country singer Jess Chambers); Big Skeleton lives in equal balance between the headphone headspace and the mindset of the club, which is a rare and terrifyingly beautiful combination in drum’n’bass. And that’s not even touching on the collaborations with State of Mind or Japanese rapper Cardz. With Big Skeleton, The Upbeats wake the dead, and the whispered terror walks once again.
DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.

New D ‘n’ B Releases

nz010
NZ010 Stone Cold Killa – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Samurai Music celebrates it’s 10th release by taking apart the dancefloor with 2 surefire aural bombs from Nottinghams’ Soul Intent. ‘Stone Cold Killa’ grinds in with cavernous heavy breakbeats, while the tone of impending carnage is set with ice cold ambience. A brief pause for the “..you’re a Stone Cold Killer” vocal before the hideously twisted bass riff unwinds itself into a drop that has been known to evacuate glassware from surrounding surfaces in clubs with systems capable of facilitating this tunes full power. The ultimate opening tune we suggest you save this piece of dangerous weaponry for situations that call for the heaviest artillery possible. ‘Conflict’ recalls golden moments in the tech step era with militant stepping breaks and a savagely warped bassline that bounces around with gleeful menace. It’s blatantly obvious that Mr Soul Intent was on a serious mission of hurting dancefloors in the days these two bass heavy monsters were created. We are proud to celebrate our 10th release by sharing their might with the rest of the planet. DJ’s that saw the need to draw for true power have been people like Klute, State Of Mind, Bailey, Eveson, Randall, Kasra, Cern, Phobia, Bulletproof and many more besides…

BRD004 Diamonds Shine – Utopia Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
Approaching the 4th release, and with it’s catalogue of unique artists, the snowball effect is in full motion for Breed12inches. After recruiting Russian duo Utopia back onto their successive 12” with another big release, the Breed12inches camp have now seen all eyes drawn to them, following huge play and support by some of the scene’s major players. Breaking away from the moniker of ‘Lifted Music’s sister label’, it was only a matter of time before audiences and DJ’s perceived Breed to be a rising label in its own right, one they also hope will be around for a long time. With BRD005 already in the final stages, and a handful of global promo mixes lined up to coincide with the release, it really is up and up from here for Breed12inches. Utopia return to the main stage of Breed12inches, following the incredible success of BRD003. The Russian duo, minus a member but equally as strong, follow up with `Diamonds Shine’ and `Scan Me’ – two more dancefloor smashers. Consistantly played by the scenes biggest, and featured thoroughly in various promo mixes and podcasts, Utopia are slowly becoming a name on the lips of the scene. Available on 12″ and digitally MP3, BRD004 is an absolute must have.
DIAMONDS SHINE – Hailed as one of the most original sounding tracks to be released this year, Utopia combine an elegant glistening melody with rolling drums and a stomach churning sub. Think a revamped ’31 seconds’, with more electro influence and high energy – all combined with a distinct sound and a taste of Russian vodka, then your halfway there. Originality at its best.
SCAN ME – That trademark Utopia style is in full motion with ‘Scan Me’. Big beats, a catchy melody with a club-shaking low end, the B side is yet another demonstration as to why Utopia are being lined up as the next big production force within Drum and Bass. Glitches, intelligent edits and a stomping kick-snare combination complete a solid 12″ from Russia’s greatest export.

C4CUK008 Age Of Terror – Cause 4 Concern C4C Recordings 12″ Vinyl
It might have no military application, but that doesn’t stop Age of Terror from being a sonic weapon. 40 seconds to load and aim, 20 seconds to charge, and BOOM – bodies flying everywhere on the dancefloor. Driven by a dominant mid range riff and supported by energetic beats, this act of aural terror is typical c4c turning the screws to force confessions on the ‘floor. Scatter Brain – Simple hats and ominous pads are soon joined by percussive snippets and hellish bass overtones. The suspense ends just after a minute in whereupon the drop delivers a stark sonic image; choppy, fractured beats surround a raw bassline that sounds demonic. Will mess with your head just like the title says.

nonvogue004
NONVOGUE004 Big Skeleton LP (Vinyl Version) – The Upbeats Non Vogue 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy. If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughterinduced abdominal muscles pains.

DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.

a The Upbeats – Big Skeleton
b The Upbeats – Laser Crypt
c The Upbeats – Carousel (Feat. Kemo)

AA: Pete Voyager — Long White Cloud’ Voyager makes a long awaited return to the drum & bass scene; with classics as “Hypersleep” or collaborations with DJ Rap under his belt not to mention his work for “Deejay Recordings”, “Lucky Spin” or on “Good Looking Records”, Pete Parsons is certainly no newcomer, he’s justbeen taking a break and is as fresh as ever. He brings his sound to”Camino Blue Recordings” for the first time with “Long White Cloud”, a track packed with a wonderful old school stepping break, smooth sub bass, glorious progressive keys and pads. Voyager is well and truly backon form here, and how glad we are to hear it when the music is this good.

lslp001
LSLP001 SPL LP – SPL Lost Soul Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 4
SPL spent the last 3 years spreading his reach into diverse genres of electronic music. He has opened new branches of the already successful Lost Soul label. He has built on his international success, raining bass down on the heads of unsuspecting clubbers and partygoers all over the world. Now SPL returns to the Drum and Bass fold and does not disappoint. SPL, aka Sam Pool, has created the perfect blend of illusion, reality, precision and chaos within his first solo LP. The self-titled ‘SPL’ LP either sweeps the listener into worlds built of light and mystery, or drags them into the depths of a bass-filled hell. Lost Soul’s first LP release, ‘SPL,’ is a daringly original take on hard and dark music. With 8 tracks creating a symphony of chemically fueled emotion, ebbing and flowing between aggression and release, it’s no wonder why there is already a buzz within the international community of producers and fans alike.
‘I want to return depth and focus to dark drum and bass and give people who are turned off by the formulaic horror of today’s dark music something that they can identify with’ —SPL—
‘Epic and brutal machine funk’ —Dieselboy—
‘The most refreshing thing I have heard this year… SPLendidly produced’ —Limewax—
‘SPL has outdone himself, presenting an album that has depth as well as danceability’ —The Panacea—
There is a feeling of digitally mechanized destruction to the art within tracks like ‘Run From the Feeling’ and ‘It Will Be Different,’ pushing the audience over the edge of what was thought possible with Drum and Bass. Or the driving and sometimes brash ‘Angels’ or ‘Distance’ which fools the listener into thinking something beautiful lies beneath, just before an unexpected change in architecture sends them screaming for more low frequency mayhem. And that’s just to name a few. ‘Sins of the Streets’ has been in my box from the day I got it. I thought it was going to be the best tune on the Album. Then I got hit with ‘Juggernaut’ and ‘Distance,’ both completely disgusting! Definitely going to get some mileage out of this fantastic album for a long time to come, some excellent cuts on here.’ —Ed Rush—
‘Futuristic, funky, filthy are just three words I could use to describe SPL’s debut album. Dance floor smasher after dance floor smasher.. Essential.’ —Audio Freak Cult—
The LP itself has a total of 8 tracks bursting with ear candy and ready to lay waste to any system or individual daring enough drop the needle or load the disk.

a SPL – Juggernaut
b SPL – Angels
c SPL – Distance
d SPL – Guardian
e SPL – Sins of the Streets

brk013
BRK013 Von Glooperstien / Bubbles – Hizatron / Geiom Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
*Special white vinyl pressing for the first 500 copies only* Part man/part machine Hizatron takes Berkane Sol in a new acidic direction with the outstanding tune that is Von Glooperstein. Atmospheric, refined, techy, funky and deranged are all accurate descriptions of this ever evolving masterclass in gloop. Beautiful digi bells, crisp clicks and clacks and a monster lead line all combine to work even the most demanding dancefloor. This tune will mix with UK Funky just as well as it does with techno and house. It features on the recent Geiom FACT magazine mix. http://www.sendspace.com/file/yydm34
In a manic attempt to fuse half step, electro booty bass, niche and primates into one coherent whole, Geiom came up with the delicious mongrel known as Bubbles. Wonky synths collide with tuff drum patterns in a tense, restless fashion which peaks with a kind of homage to the Midlands favourite underground genre, Bassline house. There’s a kind of psychedelic terror at the heart of this tune but its way too playful to ever become truly menacing….Both these tunes demonstrate the high standard of musical creativity that is coming out of Nottingham right now, but give no indication of an easy to identify style. Which is just how we like it! All the latest Berkane Sol developments will be showcased at our forthcoming head to head with the Blunted Robots – Fabric/October 9th.

WICKEDA001 A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe (Ramadanman Refix) – Wickeda Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hand stamped ltd edition of 500 180g vinyl. In early 2009, Ramadanman was approached by the British Council to participate in a cultural project between the UK and Bulgaria. The Bulgarian public voted for a top 10 of their favourite 90’s Bulgarian pop songs, which were then offered to three UK producers to remix (the others being Hexstatic and Craggz & Parallel Forces). Ramadanman chose the Wickeda song “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” (“And I and Bobby, We are Both Drinking Coffee”), and remixed it. The remix was premiered at a British Council‐organised club night in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, and beforehand, Ramadanman gave a remix workshop session to local producers. Wickeda are a Bulgarian rock band with a strong following. “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” was a hit single from their first album Revolution which was released in 1999 and sold over 30,000 copies. Today, Wickeda continue to tour Bulgaria as well as Europe, with regular festival dates.

PL006 Hypothermic EP – Excision Vs The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
Redhot hitman Excision meets Paradise Lost labelheads The SubDivision on this longawaited deep, dark funk release, the Hypothermic EP. Hypothermic brings gangsta vocal licks together with the baddest of basslines and slick percussion which combine to sickening effect to devastate the dancefloor. Battered on dubplate by DJs across the spectrum, from Headhunter to Djunya to SPL and the list goes on. Flipside contains the equally sick, but totally different Hypothermic RMX, from the likes of Bristols finest, Komonazmuk, who together with Player 1 mutates the tune into a feast of warped and spaced out basslines which give a different feeling but the same effect, devastation. This one has been cut on dub by dubstep dons throughout the UK and you will no doubt have heard this one at your favorite venue. Winding up the release is the ultradark Titanium, which features heavy guitar riffs and bleak pads, making you want to punch your mother in the stomach. One for the hardcore and headstrong. Quality here, don’t sleep on this.

UNEARTHED002 Bass is Maternal – Smith & Mighty feat John Lawrence Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Unearthed is a new Punch Drunk affiliated label with a mission to reissue classic Bristollian sound system music remastered and cut LOUD to heavyweight 12″ vinyl for the first time. Bass is Maternal is the title track from the legendary original Smith & Mighty long player, eventually released on their own Three Stripe label in 1994 after lengthy delays. It is the manifestation of Smith & Mighty’s proto jungle vision which came to dominate the mid nineties. U Dub is a more traditional dubbed steppers rhythm building to a break beat / junglist crescendo. This first 12″ is fully dubstep compatible and has been recently revived by top selectors such as as Pinch, Shortstuff and Ben UFO. Both tracks essential for collectors and crucial to the Bristol sound system continuum jigsaw. More stone cold classics coming soon from the Unearthed series…

ear012
EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge.
Support from: Pinch, Loefah, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, RSD and many more.

OSMUK007 Life Continuum – Kryptic Minds Osiris Music UK 12″ Vinyl
Kryptic Minds first release since their highly anticipated ‘One Of Us’ Album on Loefah’s Swamp81 label. Kryptic Minds show they have many strings to their bow in the shape of this killer 2 track 12” on their own Osiris Music uk imprint.
X_Life Continuum shows the guys going in deep with hard synth manipulation, warm pads and haunting choir which glides in and out effortlessly through the mix. Best listened to in a dark room, with a massive sound system, for people who like to feel the bass rattling they’re chest!
Y_Wondering Why this is the yang of the flip, with a different feel altogether, in what only can be described as beautiful! With a skippy half time beat, and the sense of emotion from the off. As soon as the needle hits the edge of the record you know you are in for an emotional six minute journey. With a ghost like female vocal that glides through the track like a hot knife through butter. One for the head phones but also rocks the dance.
DJ support: Youngsta, Loefah, Mala, Headhunter, N – Type, Pinch, Distance. Mary Anne Hobbs.

IBR004 Deixa – Octa Push Iberian 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Lisbon-based Octa Push are the newest recruits on the Iberian label and here they come up with the goods on this very distinctive international flavoured 3-tracker – following their debut vinyl release on Soul Jazz Records, Stepper’s Delight 2 compilation. Having blown up the Red Bull Stage at this year’s Sonar in Barcelona and wowed people at Fabric and the Glade Festival with their unique flow; which sees them combine the Portuguese and African sound spliced with elements of UK Garage, Dancehall and Techno. Both “Deixa” with Toni Clean, resident in Portugal and from the Cabo Verde Isles, and “Baila Mundo”, with the legendery MC Zulu and his distinctive randomised dance hall cadence, show Octa Push as accomplished producers – having already remixed the likes of Buraka Som Sistema, Debruit, Mochipet and Dj Znobia, to name a few – and skilled at using original vocals over their bass line driving funky beats; whilst “Dubshh” is a marvellous bustling and punchy instrumental rub perfectly illustrating their bass and groove style. All three tunes are sure players and seem destined to bring the Portuguese style to a growing fan base and providing Iberian with yet another non-UK produced bass continuum vibe.
DJ support from, TRG, Shackleton, Ruckspin, I.D., Bok Bok, Kanji Kinetic, Bunzer0, Pirate Soundsystem, DJ Deville, Subeena, Smutlee, Untold, Kid Kameleon, Helixir, RSD, SiBegg.

CLDUB009 Coastal Dubs Part 1 – Ultrasound / Hizzle Guy Clandestine Cultivations 12″ Vinyl
The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. With big support from the leftfield of Dubstep and tastemakers like Belgiums Bunzero. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. We really can’t overemphasize how much energy this guy has on the decks, and it transfers straight to his tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

RAMP024 Destination There EP – Ras G & The Afrikan Space Program Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Ras G returns to RAMP after last year’s extrasolar remix of Clouds’ “Timekeeper”, and recent output on BFF Flying Lotus’ digital-only Brainfeeder label with a fresh EP of speaker popping rasta flecked hip hop sickness. Residing in the left coast, Ras has been godfather to the new post-Dilla instrumental hip hop movement, releasing various vinyl releases on his own Poobah label as far back at 2005. Being one of the most innovative and crazy characters in the scene, Ras’ dusty bass humps are still bringing the realness in a massively stagnant field.
