New D&B Releases

CRIT046 Erase / Locked Up – Stray Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Bringing yet more total refreshment is Kasra’s Critical movement with what is yet another example of superlative A&R’ing skills. Stray is a name that’s surfaced previously on the Critical Sound album and more recently as a bonus remix on Sabre’s LP but this is his first solo single release and as you can imagine with fans like Gilles Peterson waiting in the wings, it’s most definitely a keeper. ‘Locked Up’ is a welcome shot in the arm for drum & bass heads and electronic fans alike. Fusing techno and 80’s sensibilities over a razorsharp break workout, it’s absolutely phenomenal. Balearic, beautiful and thoughtful music that manages to straddle the dance floor/home listening divide with ease with its soothing piano lines, simple lead and rumbling bass. One to sit and watch the sunset to, then get up and dance once the lights go down. Things get darker on the flip with ‘Erase’. A life-support bleep rings from the start under cinematic strings and pads with a sparse break until an eerie soundscape dropout creeps us all out. Then back comes that break and a walking bassline as Stray starts to play with our minds dropping in some fierce old-skool edits and a synth line straight out of a horror film to make for an utterly compelling slice of experimental drum & bass. DJ support from Goldie, Logistics, Kasra, Nutone, Spectrasoul, Friction and many more.

b Stray – Locked Up

SUBTITLESUK001 Featherweight / Glued – Ulterior Motive Subtitles Music (UK) 12″ Vinyl
Subtitles UK presents Ulterior Motive. Breaking through with a fresh & funk-fuelled sound, the Bournemouth-based DJ/production duo of James Davidson and Greg Hepworth are making their mark in 2010 and setting the pace for others to follow. These two essential singles mark the relaunch of a newly revitalised Subtitles and clearly demonstrate why Ulterior Motive are fast-building a reputation for high-quality, innovative drum & bass. Going straight for the knockout in Round 1, ‘Featherweight’ is Ulterior Motive’s biggest track to date and a firm favourite with heavy hitters like Teebee, Hype, DJ Marky, dBridge, Marcus Intalex, Fabio & Grooverider and Friction. Punchy beats combine with a classic hip-hop hook to set the vibes before dropping below-the-belt with a bassline dirtier than Mike Tyson. ‘Glued’ rolls out with infectious percussion and a rasping low-end, keeping crowds gripped to the dancefloor and reinforcing this crucial future-proofed 12”.

BRD007 Déjà vu / Lithium – Telekinesis Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
Another new release, another new talent. Breed 12 Inches’ ear for talent is becoming a cornerstone of the scene, and BRD007 intends to make no change to that. Artists Telekinesis and Kinetik assume the reigns of the latest release, with two iconically large tracks – ‘Deja Vu’ and ‘Lithium’. Working with the develop side at Breed 12 Inches, both production outfits have produced a well engineered 12″ to be proud of, and can now sit back and watch it do damage on a global scale. Already beginning to feature heavily in the rotation from the scenes finest, BRD007 is scheduled for 7th June 2010 full release, with digital release due shortly after.
Slovenia’s two brightest young stars tag-team with Kinetik, in a ferociously infective 12″. Sonically prominent, and rhythmically outstanding, BRD007 builds to the Breed 12 Inches back catalogue of impressive artist development, matched by no other label around. ‘Deja Vu’ points towards the kind of tune that most wish they had produced, but few can actually pull off. Aggressive, operatic, rolling, and employing influences from a wealth of outside resources, BRD007′s A-side is the perfect arrival for Telekinesis onto the world platform. Lithium’s vibe and funk-influenced arrangement constitutes to what we would called a ‘proper roller’. A running pace is mapped out by a hot-steppin’ drum track, with a low-end designed to test any system. With the colliding influences from both Telekinesis and Kinetik, the B-side is not to go unheard.

a Telekinesis – Déjà vu
b Telekinesis & Kinetic – Lithium

Phuzion018: As Nookie’s Imprint is set to get to number 20 this year he launches one in a string of quality releases. These tracks are brilliant. ‘Stand By’ is a rollout tune with nice tight beat throughout the intro that helps the dj in the mix. New D&B Promos

TRIPS003 Kontroller / ABTN – Silent Witness & Break Triple Seed 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Welcome to the third release on Triple Seed. This time, featuring the classic partnership of Silent Witness & Break.
A. Kontroller – This number takes no prisoners with its anthemic reece and breakbeat driven madness. Designed to please crowds, this one will empower the dj and dress down his or her victims. Snippets of eighties pop vocals and guitar punctuate the lazer fight bass stabs providing all the tone and colour necessary to illuminate any flagging dance floor. Prepare to get caught in a mosh when this goes off.
AA. ABTN – Heads down! ABTN is two step tour de force of bass beats and atmosphere. The initial calm gives way to a ridiculously heavy bass growl and crisp beats that will entrance any self respecting party goer. Stripped down and serious, the contemporary minimal feel is backed up by typically beefy production that (really) will stand the test of time. DJ support from Andy C, Ed Rush, Goldie, Friction, Bad Company, Bailey, Fierce, Survival, Noisia, and more…

CRIT047 Back To The Jungle / Who Jah Bless – Bladerunner / Serum & Bladerunner Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Calling all foot-soldiers to the floor! Hold your positions as Critical stand firm ready to drop one of its most rowdy releases in quite some time. Looking back to go forward we see Bladerunner and Serum going in hard with a 12” brimming with jungle riddims guaranteed to have the rudest of rudeboys skanking out as Critical shows its undeniable versatility once more. Bladerunner steps up first with the evocative, cinematic intro of ‘Back To the Jungle’, that manages to set the scene perfectly for what’s to come with tom-tom hits, deep forest atmospherics and a certain “every time I think I’m gonna wake up back in the jungle..” sample. As he says it that’s exactly what we do as in crash the breaks, mentasm stabs and the largest of basslines that takes so things old-skool you could almost swear it was 1994 again. Sometimes they really do make them like they used to and we’re very pleased that they do, phenomenal.
Teaming up with Serum on the flip sees the pair continuing the theme with ‘Who Jah Bless’, another excursion right back to the roots. Skipping breaks, bleep fx and sax pave the way to one of the all time classic studio techniques synonymous with jungle/drum & bass – the time-stretched vocal! Sitting perfectly in the mix it signals the drop of smashing drums, massive rise & fall bass and pitch shifting snares that finish this one off with a touch of class. Another very special Critical release indeed.
DJ support from Andy C, Hype, Friction, Cyantific, Logistics and many more.

JUNO10X Sense of Danger (Calibre remixes) – Shara Nelson Juno Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Producer, label boss, DJ & remixer extraordinaire, Charles Webster will need no introduction to house music lovers. From his early days working at Square Dance Studios in Nottingham engineering for celebrated labels such as Time and DiY his unquestionable talent has seen him DJ all over the world, remix tracks on labels such as Defected, Buzzin’ Fly, Freerange and Dessous and release numerous records under various guises such as Furry Phreaks, DJ Profile and Presence. Under the moniker of Presence he teamed up with Massive Attack vocalist Shara Nelson to create the deep house anthem “Sense of Danger” which was released on the seminal deep house label Pagan. With Shara’s deeply emotive vocal layered over tough beats, metallic synths and soaring strings, this still sounds as fresh and as relevant as it did 12 years ago. This release sees the first drum & bass remix of the series, which we have entrusted in the accomplished hands of Dominick Martin aka Calibre. Anyone familiar with his work or who has heard his most recent album “Shine A Light” will know he is an artist unconfined to the restraints of the norm, and he displays this by flipping the original vocal on its head to create an alternative chorus to the original, embellished with stirring classical strings and spooky pads.

EXITCD001 Blackpocket – The Album – Steve Spacek Presents Exit Records CD
Few artists nowadays can claim true originality in the music they make; artists who have their own unique sound. You can easily spot a DJ Premier break, an M.I.A. chant, or a Timbaland beat, because these are the artists who have etched out their own niche in the musical forum. These people push the envelope with their production, keeping things fresh, exciting and interesting for us lowly listeners. Steve Spacek is one of these people.
Steve White forged his music career in the early 90’s with the dance act Stex, which also featured Johnny Marr of The Smiths. He went on to found the band Spacek in the mid-90s, and quickly found underground success. Their first release, “Eve”, gained favour with many respected people in the industry, resulting in them signing to Mos Def’s GoodTree imprint and Island Records in the UK. The late J Dilla offerered up remix duties on a package that included contributions from the Roots’ Black Thought, Frank n Dank and Mos Def himself. Their debut album, “Curvatia”, was critically acclaimed, and displayed the group’s complex and challenging sensibilities, establishing them as a promising new talent in the British alternative music scene. “Vintage Hi-Tech” followed in 2003, drawing high praise from critics who called it “a downtempo musical masterpiece that draws no comparison”, and they were heralded by Style magazine as “the Radiohead of soul”.
“Black Pocket The Album” is instrumental soul at its best, an exploration into grooves and the spaces within. Over the series, Black Pocket has shown the diversity that’s possible within the soul genre, and this album pulls all those possibilities together. Every track on here shows a producer who is totally in control of his sonic surroundings: a myriad of splices and lush quirks which – like a jigsaw – resolve themselves to reveal the beauty of the whole. “Black Pocket” is an album which blows away all the usual clichés found in
the music behind soul and brings to you a future full of potential and promise.
Steve Spacek, the acclaimed voice behind the ground-breaking genre-pushing group Spacek (who were championed by everyone from Entertainment Weekly to Mos Def), made a name for himself at the turn of the century with the song “Eve’ (covered by Dwele). The song set off a worldwide buzz on Steve as a singer and his group’s futuristic sound. Imagine a robot performer in the future, in love with hip hop beatology and skillful enough to twist it into new shapes, programmed with an infused knowledge of the biographies of Marvin Gaye, Donny Hathaway and Leroy Hutson as source material for lyric writing and you might have an idea of the Spacek sound – Robotic, futuristic, hip-hop based soul. Steve Spacek has also worked with Mark Pritchard on his recent Harmonic 313 album, or their joint 12″ on Warp this year under the alias Africa Hi Tech. His back catalogue, includes labels like Giles Petersons Brownswood, BBE, and more recently he had a Blackpocket release on Fat City which had a Martyn Remix.

HFCD004 Crooks & Lovers – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings CD
Adding a percussive and experimental edge to the current class of post-dubstep pioneers, Mount Kimbie, the duo of Dominic Maker and Kai Campos – are set to release their highly anticipated debut album ‘Crooks & Lovers’ on Scuba’s Hotflush label in July. Mount Kimbie’s first two EPs – ‘Maybes’ and ‘Sketch On Glass’ – seemed like explorations of spaces so private that all within earshot were instantly turned into voyeurs. The experience was less like listening to music and more like eavesdropping on the machinations of a lone mind – albeit a lone mind surrounded by and retreating from millions of other minds. Difficult to categorise, the lush EPs caused a commotion when released last year with ‘Sketch On Glass’ recently undergoing reworks from the likes of Faulty DL, SCB (Scuba’s darker techno alias) and their sometime collaborator James Blake. With their own remixes (Foals and The xx) becoming hot property, Mount Kimbie have been a core part of the growing scene in London often associated with labels like Hyperdub and Hessle Audio. Dom and Kai met whilst at Southbank University, pushed together in a student halls that was previously a mental asylum – where the ceilings were still ridiculously high to stop patients hanging themselves: “a cold, joyless, concrete building – the sort of building where you’d drop a pen and the sound would just go on and on in an echo.” Armed with found sound snips and a siege mentality, Kai and Dom set about turning London’s ambience into rhythm, its chaos into coherence. Traces of influence remain – the hard-earned spaces of Burial and The Bug vie with the berserk melodrama of Xiu Xiu and Grouper’s sad-eyed glow, D’Angelo’s pervert soul gets cleansed in the intimacy of Phil Elvrum’s Microphones, Angelo Badalamenti’s swollen ‘Twin Peaks’ atmospheres find a cradle in Madlib’s lax lope. The band’s sound and response to the dubstep moment is very much their own. Sceneless and untethered from etiquette and genre codes, ‘Crooks & Lovers’ floats through dubstep and hip-hop, jazz, techno and ambient, post-rock, UK garage and film scores to startling effect.
Mount Kimbie – who play as a live band – have announced a string of European festivals & shows for the summer.

New Dubstep / Funky / Techno releases

ASC003 Step Aside – DJ Silkie Cloqworq Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Dj Silkie provides his debut single on Cloqworq Recordings, which consists of two tracks written especially for this in house label. This is the first release since this producer has proved his talent time and time again with a string of releases over the past two years on the infamous deep medi recordings and not to mention the groundbreaking album ‘City Limits Vol. 1’. Dj Silkie And Anti Social Ent. as a collective are definitely ones to watch in 2009/2010 ‘step aside’ is a clever combination of hard hitting bass and breaks with the synthy, melodic and soulful elements as expected from this producer – dark and moody with a jazzy twist. this track drops into what can only be described as low end sub bass over a tribal beat pattern which is enough to shake up any dancefloor – a real stomper ‘illegal immigrant’ comes with similar vibes on the b side, starting off with emotive, dubesque pads and dropping with low down sub stabs over another unconventional but highly effective beat. this represents the other side to the anti social sound which can only be described of as the liquid/deeper dubstep sound. both tracks have had support on the highly acclaimed rinse fm on a weekly basis (www.rinse.fm) and are receiving heavy rotation from djs such as Skream, Mala And N-type in the clubs and not to mention major dubstep icons such as Hatcha from kiss 100 and Maryanne Hobbs from radio 1, this highlights the versatility of these tracks and the potential to cross into dj sets from different genres – a real must for all serious dubsteppers worldwide.

Riddim tracks, dj tracks, dance music. Soundsystem music, Dub music. Unmistakeably Peverelist. Cut LOUD for DJs. Peverelist is the lynchpin of the Bristol dubstep music scene. His championing of home grown talent has made his label, Punch Drunk Records, perhaps the defining contemporary label of one of the world’s most influential musical cities. HFLP004 Crooks & Lovers – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2

TURBO084 Gentle Giant Remixes – Tiga Turbo 12″ Vinyl
(martyn, efdemin, mathew jonson rmxs) the latest in a series of remix 12-inches from Tiga’s 2009 album Ciao!, featuring some of the most respected and sought-after producers in dance music taking on the most respected icon in dance musi When a song means a lot to you personally, having it remixed is a lot like sending your child to undergo plastic surgery. In this case, though, it was like having the operation performed by doctors you respect as musicians. This is most likely my favorite track off Ciao!, and the response I’ve gotten from fans seems to suggest I’m not alone. They come up to me and say, “Tiga, that was an amazing game of racquetball, but the real reason I’m here is to tell you how much “Gentle Giant” means to me.” And it’s not uncommon for my sports goggles to fill up with salty blue Gatorade tears, mainly because I thought we had been playing squash. Some may claim that the remixes on this release are too diverse, that they strain the acceptable boundaries of what’s eclectic and what’s too hectic to sex with. And to that I say, “You can’t shame the Rebel, dog. You can’t even try.”

New label: “Voodoo Music” coming soon!

New label: “Voodoo Music” coming soon!

Posted 16 February 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Voodoo music is the new label from Offkey. In the last year Raiden has increasingly begun to explore his love for tribal & percussive based drum n bass and after a recent trip to Latin America the concept for Voodoo Music was born.

In preparation for Voodoo music this year Raiden & Khanage have been busy been creating music that has gathered ‘every set’ support and rewinds from Alix Perez, Loxy, Doc Scott, dBridge, C4C, Rockwell, Icicle, Ink & Bailey amongst others. The tracks have become anthems for the new emerging sound and its followers. Thinking with a mind toward the future we have been keeping our eyes and ears on a few emerging artists that we can develop on a long term basis- Morphy and Khanage to name a few.

Voodoo Music will also feature contributions and collaborations with Rockwell, Loxy, June Miller amongst others, each release will come with its own identity and we will be working closely with the artists to make sure their work is represented in the truest sense.
We are able to work with like minded artists within drum n bass as our work has been received very well by peers and in turn these artists are writing music specifically to fit the sound and concept of Voodoo Music.

The debut release for the label is the long in demand tracks from Raiden entitled ‘Baptism Of Fire’ b/w ‘Danzon’. Baptism Of Fire is a brooding track that thrives on holding a sense of cold tension whilst ‘Danzon’ is a latin inspired skank out that doesn’t go down the trad-latin formula but instead concentrates highly on the complex rhythms of Cuba.

The second 12″ will be another instalment from Raiden & Khanage’s ongoing collaboration with ‘Amnesia Haze’ & ’8798′, two tracks that ignited the initial spark for the Voodoo Music project during a very late in the studio between the pair.

VAMPCDLP2UK002 Drumz of the Damned (2xCD) – Various Artists Vampire Records CD x 2
Vampire Records is a label created by Phil Aslett formerly of Source Direct. The label has been set up to release Drum and Bass music of all styles and will feature many different artists. The concept behind Vampire Records is the relation between the nocturnal behavior of Clubbers and Vampires. Vampire has constant evolution and is a platform for established artists and up and coming talent. The birth of the label was at the end of 2006. It has grown from strength to strength over the last couple of years. Vampire is still growing to this day but it has staying power in the world of Drum and Bass. It is up to its 10th single release and on April 1st 2009 it released its first label album “Once Bitten Twice High”. All releases on the label are still selling which proves that the music has shelf life and is non-disposable. It was very important to Phil Source at the birth of the label that it would have credibility with the old school, as well as the new breed of Drum and Bass fan. The Album “Drumz of the Damned” is the perfect follow up to “Once Bitten Twice High”. It continues the deep journey into the world of Vampire Records. This time it has 22 exclusive tracks and 2 remixes. It will take you on a journey through many different moods and styles of Drum and Bass. From Light to Dark this album has everything! Once Again! New D ‘n’ B Releases

EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

C4CLTDUK003 Something Else Sensor (Break Remix) – Cause 4 Concern C4C Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finished copy. SOMETHING ELSE / SENSOR – BREAK REMIX. Already established and exemplary in the tricky art of tune fusion, here badman Break takes two of C4C’s older numbers to create a monstrous slice of music: he’s lifted the best parts from both tracks and beefed it all up with some Break style biz, resulting in a relentless roller that drops twice to hit you hard in all the right places.
SOUL – N.PHECT REMIX There’s no doubt that halfstep tunes are hot right now, but most of them are original compositions, not remixes. Here N.Phect reinterprets Soul and strips it of its speed and intensity, but not its substance. Now it has a brand new attitude and tempo, while that unmistakable C4C funk is retained and keeps things recognisable. Future Funk.

Bruising beats and a twistedly belligerent bassline combine to bully the crap out of your ears in C4C’s typically ruthlessly efficient style. ‘Born Dead’ Sounding like the score for some sort of dystopian future where machines rule man, Born Dead is a foreboding, offbeat, synthetic and sinister tune. Samples swirl around your head while the bassline rises from the metallic mire to grab at your feet. Future filth indeed. DJ Support: Andy C, Friction, Hype, Bailey, Goldie, Gridlok, Fierce, Concord Dawn, Dieselboy, Prolix, Ed Rush, Bad Company plus many more…

CRITLP04S A Wandering Journal Album Sampler – Sabre Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. As we prepare for what will undoubtedly be one of the album highlights of 2010 Critical Music let slip a mouth-watering 12” sampler to turn all eyes in the direction of one of the most respected producers in the game, Sabre. Two very different tracks that’ll leave you counting the days until his album ‘A Wandering Journal’ finally drops in late March. First up ‘Marvel’ sees Sabre opting for the now infamous kick and rim-shot sound, a movement he’s played a vital part in developing. A deft hand and in-depth studio knowledge lets the music drift deep into the subconscious with its subtle sparse but deadly bass, fx and mid-range tweaks creating an uneasy sci-fi soundscape. Perfectly executed. Flip over and Sabre teams up with the Subtitles-signed Ulterior Motive to take the vibes back to the dance floor. ‘Barefoot’ is a killer, make no mistake, with its bouncing b-line that changes up throughout and crisp percussion that’ll have the heads skanking hard. Fans of the Ed Rush & Optical’s ‘Wormhole’ era take note, this one’ll get you twisted. DJ support from Friction, Rockwell, Break, Kasra, Cyantific, Spectrasoul, Marky, Nu Tone, Logistics and more.

EXIT020 Peach Fuzz – System Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement. On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc. On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

HEDGE023 Eastern Underground (Bungle RMX) / (Influx UK Edit Mix) – Dub Tao Hard Edged 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Berlin’s premiere Drum and Bass label returns with an original and a remix of label stalwarts Dub Tao. This duo has helped to keep Hard:edged at the forefront of the German Drum and Bass scene. Their latest offering comes in the form of, ‘East Of The Underground’. Backed with a remix from Brazilian bad boy, Bungle; who takes matter into his own hands with a stellar remix, creating a delicious double A-sided package. First up is Mr. Bungle, who rides the sample over shattering breaks, while breathing life into the tune via a tight rhythmically undulating bass line. Clever synth work is also put to use on this nearly essential tool. This is a track that possesses as much musicality as it does excitement. Dub Tao start the original off with a classic two step break, letting the samples and atmospheres create a tension before a thunderous bass drop. Dub Tao, certainly don’t need any help getting their sound tight, but who would turn down a little mixing magic from Formation’s soul-man Influx Uk. He deftly applies his ability to work within the realms of melodic Drum and Bass, while still adding some grit and edge. A skill the DT boys are quickly learning themselves. This EP most certainly posses a plethora of versatility which will aid it in finding a place in the DJ sets of many and blaring out of the speakers on a dance floor near you.

More recently Rob Smith in his RSD guise is back in the international frame with dubstep releases on labels such as Tectonic, Earwax and Punch Drunk culminating in a CD compilation ‘Good Energy’ on Punch Drunk in 2009. This new Unearthed 12″ features two unmissable and in demand original Bristol 2 step garage anthems from 2002. ‘this ere one design a lick yuh flat pon yuh back’

SENSELESS011 You Know – Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajla Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost comes to life.
PLAYS FROM: Mistajam on 1xtra, Review in Mixmag, Skream, Vex’d, Baobinga, Tomb Crew, Starkey, Warlock, Kanji Kinetic, Sterotyp, Laurent Garnier.

ROTTUN005 Retreat (Excision Remix) – Datsik & Excision Rottun 12″ Vinyl
Two of the hottest producers at the moment have to be Datsik and Excision and when they get together they make some of the most innovative sounding music. Think of the type of music played at an acid filled Transformers rave and you might have some sort of idea what it may sound like. Two Step drum patterns, Crazy morphing synth lines with freakish incidentals and heavy hitting basslines. Any robots heaven. So corrupt it could send Cillit Bang out of business.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction. ‘Medicate’ has received DJ support from LV (Hyperdub), Ben UFO (Hessle Audio), Pangaea (Hessle Audio, Hotflush), Blackdown (Keysound), Mick Pressure (Naked Lunch), Narcossist/Kowton (Keysound)
Blackdown (Keysound): “a lost gem – really harks back to an era of dubstep that is increasingly disappearing”
Ben UFO (Hessle Audio): “both sides of the release are great. Uncompromisingly eyes down vibes”

STUCK10PR01 Stuck (Various Production & Guido Remixes) – Lauren Pritchard Island Records 10″ Vinyl
Super limited 10” of Stuck Various Production & Guido Remixes. Once upon a time there was a girl called Lauren. She lived in grassy, green Madison County, Tennessee where people are as sweet as the tea they make. She’d sing songs in her yard and run around with ballerinas, big kitty cats and her brothers all the livelong day. One winter evening Lauren decided she wanted a change of scenery. She wanted to leave her comfortable grasslands and start a joyride. She traveled far to La La land and danced with the faeries in Beverly Hills, all the while humming along to Bob Marley and playing pianos. Then Lauren ventured to Gotham City(out of a pure and deep love for Batman)to take to the stages of the great White Way as a long-haired bohemian. Now 6 years, 5 tattoos, 4 electric tea kettles, 3 cities, 2 tours and 1 Nord keyboard later, she’s in the bushes with the shepherds of London, singing of her homeland with the Lolo Army ready for the next round of life attacks. Lauren knows life is first-rate come what may. The End.

SFS001 Never – Eprom Surefire Productions LLC 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. San Francisco, CA’s Surefire Sound starts off the new decade with a bang and launches their brand new label with an energetic single by EPROM. A fast rising West Coast bass technician, DJ and producer Sander Dennis a.k.a. EPROM delivers funky, techy four-four beats on “Never.”
EPROM’s original mix opens with rattling hi-hats and a hushed female vocal accented by EPROM’s patented twitchy synths. A hefty kick drops, braced by a thick, bouncy mid-range bass pattern. Like recent tracks by Untold or Ramadanman, “Never” blurs the divisions between dubstep, funky, techno and garage to form an irresistible new creation.
Hyped newcomer FaltyDL had a breakthrough year in 2009. The New Yorker introduced his versatile soulful electronic styles on a slew of singles for Planet Mu and Ramp. His Rephresh mix is a moody, shuffling reconstruction that features echoing samples, an infectious start-stop rhythm and mighty bass sweeps. DL’s mix is built for maximum club pressure.
About Surefire Sound:
Surefire Sound is a new record label presented by the Surefire music group whose goal is to showcase upcoming and established talent in electronic music. The label is part of a collection of projects under the Surefire banner including a booking agency, PR firm, and events management division. New D ‘n’ B CD

noncd2
NONCD2 Big Skeleton – The Upbeats Non Vogue CD
If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right?
Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

What the DJ’s are saying!

Marcus Intalex: “Two of the most innovative and versatile producers on todays scene. Whenever I get something new from these guys I instantly stop what I’m doing, knowing full well I am just about to hear something totally fresh.”

Dieselboy: “Once again redefining the future sound of neuro funk nastiness. Buy on sight!”

Ed Rush: “Everything these guys do demands immediate attention. Drop whatever you’re doing and go grab Big Skeleton… sick, sick, sick! They specialize in dance floor artillery of serious weight as we all know from their releases in the past. This album is no different and is a brilliant testimony to their talents. Also includes one of the best dubstep tunes I ever heard… Ship It!”

Be it the haunted click’n’bass soul of ‘Bones’ (featuring Ned Worboys of Harbour City Electric), the sub-grinding, stream-ofconsciousness narrative driven breakbeat insanity of ‘Carousel’ (featuring MC Kemo from Germany), their speaker-rupturing foray into dubstep on ‘Macabre’ (co-produced by the mysterious Crushington) or the drum’n’folk atmospherics of ‘Through The Night’ (featuring award-winning country singer Jess Chambers); Big Skeleton lives in equal balance between the headphone headspace and the mindset of the club, which is a rare and terrifyingly beautiful combination in drum’n’bass. And that’s not even touching on the collaborations with State of Mind or Japanese rapper Cardz. With Big Skeleton, The Upbeats wake the dead, and the whispered terror walks once again.
DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.

A brief pause for the “..you’re a Stone Cold Killer” vocal before the hideously twisted bass riff unwinds itself into a drop that has been known to evacuate glassware from surrounding surfaces in clubs with systems capable of facilitating this tunes full power. The ultimate opening tune we suggest you save this piece of dangerous weaponry for situations that call for the heaviest artillery possible. ‘Conflict’ recalls golden moments in the tech step era with militant stepping breaks and a savagely warped bassline that bounces around with gleeful menace. It’s blatantly obvious that Mr Soul Intent was on a serious mission of hurting dancefloors in the days these two bass heavy monsters were created. We are proud to celebrate our 10th release by sharing their might with the rest of the planet. DJ’s that saw the need to draw for true power have been people like Klute, State Of Mind, Bailey, Eveson, Randall, Kasra, Cern, Phobia, Bulletproof and many more besides…

BRD004 Diamonds Shine – Utopia Breed 12 Inches 12″ Vinyl
Approaching the 4th release, and with it’s catalogue of unique artists, the snowball effect is in full motion for Breed12inches. After recruiting Russian duo Utopia back onto their successive 12” with another big release, the Breed12inches camp have now seen all eyes drawn to them, following huge play and support by some of the scene’s major players. Breaking away from the moniker of ‘Lifted Music’s sister label’, it was only a matter of time before audiences and DJ’s perceived Breed to be a rising label in its own right, one they also hope will be around for a long time. With BRD005 already in the final stages, and a handful of global promo mixes lined up to coincide with the release, it really is up and up from here for Breed12inches. Utopia return to the main stage of Breed12inches, following the incredible success of BRD003. The Russian duo, minus a member but equally as strong, follow up with `Diamonds Shine’ and `Scan Me’ – two more dancefloor smashers. Consistantly played by the scenes biggest, and featured thoroughly in various promo mixes and podcasts, Utopia are slowly becoming a name on the lips of the scene. Available on 12″ and digitally MP3, BRD004 is an absolute must have.
DIAMONDS SHINE – Hailed as one of the most original sounding tracks to be released this year, Utopia combine an elegant glistening melody with rolling drums and a stomach churning sub. Think a revamped ’31 seconds’, with more electro influence and high energy – all combined with a distinct sound and a taste of Russian vodka, then your halfway there. Originality at its best.
SCAN ME – That trademark Utopia style is in full motion with ‘Scan Me’. Big beats, a catchy melody with a club-shaking low end, the B side is yet another demonstration as to why Utopia are being lined up as the next big production force within Drum and Bass. Glitches, intelligent edits and a stomping kick-snare combination complete a solid 12″ from Russia’s greatest export.

C4CUK008 Age Of Terror – Cause 4 Concern C4C Recordings 12″ Vinyl
It might have no military application, but that doesn’t stop Age of Terror from being a sonic weapon. 40 seconds to load and aim, 20 seconds to charge, and BOOM – bodies flying everywhere on the dancefloor. Driven by a dominant mid range riff and supported by energetic beats, this act of aural terror is typical c4c turning the screws to force confessions on the ‘floor. Scatter Brain – Simple hats and ominous pads are soon joined by percussive snippets and hellish bass overtones. The suspense ends just after a minute in whereupon the drop delivers a stark sonic image; choppy, fractured beats surround a raw bassline that sounds demonic. Will mess with your head just like the title says.

NONVOGUE004 Big Skeleton LP (Vinyl Version) – The Upbeats Non Vogue 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy. If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughterinduced abdominal muscles pains.

DON’T SAY WE DIDN’T WARN YOU.

a The Upbeats – Big Skeleton
b The Upbeats – Laser Crypt
c The Upbeats – Carousel (Feat. Kemo)

lslp001
LSLP001 SPL LP – SPL Lost Soul Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 4
SPL spent the last 3 years spreading his reach into diverse genres of electronic music. He has opened new branches of the already successful Lost Soul label. He has built on his international success, raining bass down on the heads of unsuspecting clubbers and partygoers all over the world. Now SPL returns to the Drum and Bass fold and does not disappoint. SPL, aka Sam Pool, has created the perfect blend of illusion, reality, precision and chaos within his first solo LP. The self-titled ‘SPL’ LP either sweeps the listener into worlds built of light and mystery, or drags them into the depths of a bass-filled hell. Lost Soul’s first LP release, ‘SPL,’ is a daringly original take on hard and dark music. With 8 tracks creating a symphony of chemically fueled emotion, ebbing and flowing between aggression and release, it’s no wonder why there is already a buzz within the international community of producers and fans alike.
‘I want to return depth and focus to dark drum and bass and give people who are turned off by the formulaic horror of today’s dark music something that they can identify with’ —SPL—
‘Epic and brutal machine funk’ —Dieselboy—
‘The most refreshing thing I have heard this year… SPLendidly produced’ —Limewax—
‘SPL has outdone himself, presenting an album that has depth as well as danceability’ —The Panacea—
There is a feeling of digitally mechanized destruction to the art within tracks like ‘Run From the Feeling’ and ‘It Will Be Different,’ pushing the audience over the edge of what was thought possible with Drum and Bass. Or the driving and sometimes brash ‘Angels’ or ‘Distance’ which fools the listener into thinking something beautiful lies beneath, just before an unexpected change in architecture sends them screaming for more low frequency mayhem. And that’s just to name a few. ‘Sins of the Streets’ has been in my box from the day I got it. I thought it was going to be the best tune on the Album. Then I got hit with ‘Juggernaut’ and ‘Distance,’ both completely disgusting! Definitely going to get some mileage out of this fantastic album for a long time to come, some excellent cuts on here.’ —Ed Rush—
‘Futuristic, funky, filthy are just three words I could use to describe SPL’s debut album. Dance floor smasher after dance floor smasher.. Essential.’ —Audio Freak Cult—
The LP itself has a total of 8 tracks bursting with ear candy and ready to lay waste to any system or individual daring enough drop the needle or load the disk.

a SPL – Juggernaut
b SPL – Angels
c SPL – Distance
d SPL – Guardian
e SPL – Sins of the Streets

This tune will mix with UK Funky just as well as it does with techno and house. It features on the recent Geiom FACT magazine mix. http://www.sendspace.com/file/yydm34
In a manic attempt to fuse half step, electro booty bass, niche and primates into one coherent whole, Geiom came up with the delicious mongrel known as Bubbles. Wonky synths collide with tuff drum patterns in a tense, restless fashion which peaks with a kind of homage to the Midlands favourite underground genre, Bassline house. There’s a kind of psychedelic terror at the heart of this tune but its way too playful to ever become truly menacing….Both these tunes demonstrate the high standard of musical creativity that is coming out of Nottingham right now, but give no indication of an easy to identify style. Which is just how we like it! All the latest Berkane Sol developments will be showcased at our forthcoming head to head with the Blunted Robots – Fabric/October 9th.

WICKEDA001 A Nie Dvamata S Bobi Piem Kafe (Ramadanman Refix) – Wickeda Hessle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Hand stamped ltd edition of 500 180g vinyl. In early 2009, Ramadanman was approached by the British Council to participate in a cultural project between the UK and Bulgaria. The Bulgarian public voted for a top 10 of their favourite 90’s Bulgarian pop songs, which were then offered to three UK producers to remix (the others being Hexstatic and Craggz & Parallel Forces). Ramadanman chose the Wickeda song “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” (“And I and Bobby, We are Both Drinking Coffee”), and remixed it. The remix was premiered at a British Council‐organised club night in Sofia, Bulgaria’s capital, and beforehand, Ramadanman gave a remix workshop session to local producers. Wickeda are a Bulgarian rock band with a strong following. “А ние с Боби двамата пием кафе” was a hit single from their first album Revolution which was released in 1999 and sold over 30,000 copies. Today, Wickeda continue to tour Bulgaria as well as Europe, with regular festival dates.

PL006 Hypothermic EP – Excision Vs The Subdivision Paradise Lost 12″ Vinyl
Redhot hitman Excision meets Paradise Lost labelheads The SubDivision on this longawaited deep, dark funk release, the Hypothermic EP. Hypothermic brings gangsta vocal licks together with the baddest of basslines and slick percussion which combine to sickening effect to devastate the dancefloor. Battered on dubplate by DJs across the spectrum, from Headhunter to Djunya to SPL and the list goes on. Flipside contains the equally sick, but totally different Hypothermic RMX, from the likes of Bristols finest, Komonazmuk, who together with Player 1 mutates the tune into a feast of warped and spaced out basslines which give a different feeling but the same effect, devastation. This one has been cut on dub by dubstep dons throughout the UK and you will no doubt have heard this one at your favorite venue. Winding up the release is the ultradark Titanium, which features heavy guitar riffs and bleak pads, making you want to punch your mother in the stomach. One for the hardcore and headstrong. Quality here, don’t sleep on this.

UNEARTHED002 Bass is Maternal – Smith & Mighty feat John Lawrence Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Unearthed is a new Punch Drunk affiliated label with a mission to reissue classic Bristollian sound system music remastered and cut LOUD to heavyweight 12″ vinyl for the first time. Bass is Maternal is the title track from the legendary original Smith & Mighty long player, eventually released on their own Three Stripe label in 1994 after lengthy delays. It is the manifestation of Smith & Mighty’s proto jungle vision which came to dominate the mid nineties. U Dub is a more traditional dubbed steppers rhythm building to a break beat / junglist crescendo. This first 12″ is fully dubstep compatible and has been recently revived by top selectors such as as Pinch, Shortstuff and Ben UFO. Both tracks essential for collectors and crucial to the Bristol sound system continuum jigsaw. More stone cold classics coming soon from the Unearthed series…

EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge.
Support from: Pinch, Loefah, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, RSD and many more.

Kryptic Minds first release since their highly anticipated ‘One Of Us’ Album on Loefah’s Swamp81 label. Kryptic Minds show they have many strings to their bow in the shape of this killer 2 track 12” on their own Osiris Music uk imprint.
X_Life Continuum shows the guys going in deep with hard synth manipulation, warm pads and haunting choir which glides in and out effortlessly through the mix. Best listened to in a dark room, with a massive sound system, for people who like to feel the bass rattling they’re chest!
Y_Wondering Why this is the yang of the flip, with a different feel altogether, in what only can be described as beautiful! With a skippy half time beat, and the sense of emotion from the off. As soon as the needle hits the edge of the record you know you are in for an emotional six minute journey. With a ghost like female vocal that glides through the track like a hot knife through butter. One for the head phones but also rocks the dance.

IBR004 Deixa – Octa Push Iberian 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Lisbon-based Octa Push are the newest recruits on the Iberian label and here they come up with the goods on this very distinctive international flavoured 3-tracker – following their debut vinyl release on Soul Jazz Records, Stepper’s Delight 2 compilation. Having blown up the Red Bull Stage at this year’s Sonar in Barcelona and wowed people at Fabric and the Glade Festival with their unique flow; which sees them combine the Portuguese and African sound spliced with elements of UK Garage, Dancehall and Techno. Both “Deixa” with Toni Clean, resident in Portugal and from the Cabo Verde Isles, and “Baila Mundo”, with the legendery MC Zulu and his distinctive randomised dance hall cadence, show Octa Push as accomplished producers – having already remixed the likes of Buraka Som Sistema, Debruit, Mochipet and Dj Znobia, to name a few – and skilled at using original vocals over their bass line driving funky beats; whilst “Dubshh” is a marvellous bustling and punchy instrumental rub perfectly illustrating their bass and groove style. All three tunes are sure players and seem destined to bring the Portuguese style to a growing fan base and providing Iberian with yet another non-UK produced bass continuum vibe.
DJ support from, TRG, Shackleton, Ruckspin, I.D., Bok Bok, Kanji Kinetic, Bunzer0, Pirate Soundsystem, DJ Deville, Subeena, Smutlee, Untold, Kid Kameleon, Helixir, RSD, SiBegg.

CLDUB009 Coastal Dubs Part 1 – Ultrasound / Hizzle Guy Clandestine Cultivations 12″ Vinyl
The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. With big support from the leftfield of Dubstep and tastemakers like Belgiums Bunzero. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. We really can’t overemphasize how much energy this guy has on the decks, and it transfers straight to his tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

NZ009 Timeslip – Cern Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl

Shuddering sliding rhythms pound their ingenious funk with the soaring Reese in the second breakdown never failing to draw cheers of delight from appreciative dancefloors. ‘Eastern Gates’ is a subtle rolling slice of funk, laden with a gorgeous eastern female vocal that saunters over what has become a trademark tech groove from Mr Cern. Rolling RARE funk breaks, deep low subs, carefully placed breakbeat flicks and switches between Dancehall vocals ooze DnB experience from the first few seconds. Listen, learn and enjoy !! On the flip the production duo deliver the soulful ‘Illuminism’ which could easily be an instramental hiphop track if not for the 175 bpm tempo. Double bass pulls, xylophones and chords take centre stage and relay a sparse mood coupled with Nucleus and Paradox’s shuffling breakwork making a great contrast to the flip’s Esoterica. Just like the outer label artwork states, lets ‘KEEP JUNGLE ALIVE’.

NSGNL004 CCTV / Factory 5 – Phace & Noisia / Misanthrop Neosignal 12″ Vinyl
Heading into round four, Phace and Misanthrop firmly apply the pressure, making sure you understand that things are far from a game, and all bets are off. A. Phace and Noisia ‘CCTV’ Up first is the long awaited release of ‘CCTV’. Characterized by the simple, 3 note melody that leads things off, Noisia and Phace start the show on a very eerie, menacing note. Think of a horror movie: you’re walking through a dark, murky corridor with nothing more than a flashlight to both keep you company and shed light on the situation. Suddenly, out of nowhere, this massive ogre springs through the wall you just walked down, nipping at your heels, as you kick into a full sprint in the opposite direction. Just as you round the corner, what do you see? The flashing red light of a closed circuit surveillance camera.. We’re watching you. We dictate the pace. B. Misanthrop ‘Factory 5′ After escaping that nightmare (relatively) unscathed, you happen into a large, barren warehouse. It looks like some futuristic vehicles or weaponry was created in this facility years prior. Your flashlight is still emitting light, and just when you realize that you’ve hit a deadend, you also come to the realization that the deadend is infact a huge mechwarrior, focusing in right on you. That red laser beam coming from its head isn’t welcoming, is it? Back on the chase. Misanthrop Industries has created some frightening beasts in its time, but this one is downright spooky! What other outfits are bringing you aural soundscapes this vivid?

New D ‘n’ B Promos

DJ Support: Andy C, Friction, Hype, Bailey, Goldie, Gridlok, Fierce, Phace, Dieselboy, Zinc, Ed Rush, Bad Company, Noisia plus many more…

HFT009 Hyph Mngo – Joy Orbison Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Massive Massive Massive record. For the ninth release on Hotflush Two, a new producer based in London steps to the fore: Joy Orbison, with two tracks resonating somewhere between dubstep, funky, and future soul. “Hyph Mngo” is the year’s most talked- about track in the blogosphere; championed by Martin “Blackdown” Clark and maligned by Simon Reynolds, it has already become a smash in clubs across the world. On the flip, “Wet Look” maintains the vibe. Gilles Peterson, Rob Da Bank, Mary Anne Hobbs all heavily supporting!

SUB005 Dub Sessions I – Shed SubSolo 12″ Vinyl
Displaying his excellent production skills within techno, Shed moves over to straight up dub sessions with the ‘Dub Shed Sessions I’ on SubSolo. Fierce bass meditative drops circles around the excellent atmospheric keyboard patterns, combined in a way that sounds both fresh and unique, but still rating 100% on Shed’s own trademark sound. Leaning towards a bit of contemporary straight dub techno with ‘Dub Shed – STP Remix’, the focus is on a more direct and present take on the tracks progression, rather than inviting the listener into an already set-up wall of sound. Shaking off the melody from the centre, the spacious patterns reveal themselves as the extreme basslines comes in, removing all doubt about the direction of the track. Taking the very straight up techno track from ‘WAX No. 10001′ B side, Shed displays yet another moniker(?) as Panamax, fusing the same linear groove from the original but taking the tempo down to inhumane tempo and filling the already colourful spectrum with wide percussion and even more slow building electric synthesizer swirls. review taken from the http://thefuturist.se

ASC003 Step Aside – DJ Silkie Cloqworq Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Very Limited White Label Promo.

STEAK001 1975 – Mr Gasparov / Octa Push Steak House Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Hanuman and Atki2’s (aka Monkey Steak) Steak House Imprint will be the label to watch in the next 12 months. Steak House are about to unleash a devastating series of 12”s of pure carnival fire from both established and up and coming producers. STEAK 001 brings together the hottest Global Bass talent from the Iberian Peninsula: Octa push and Mr Gasparov.
MR GASPAROV – 1975 Mr Gasparov is Lisbon’s premier purveyor of intelligent Bass Music. Using
graphics tablets, midi controllers and a synth made from an old McDonalds till point, Mr Gasparov makes intricate, bass heavy dub techno/two step crossovers that will destroy any dancefloor with enough detail to keep the experimental heads’ attention.1975 is a slow build 2step workout with skittery beats and thumping sub that delivers in all the right places. Think El-B meets Aphex Twin under a tropical sky. Support from Scuba, Emma Warren, Freak Camp, Conspira,
OCTA PUSH – AI NADIA & LAIKA LIKES IT Octa Push were formed when Portuguese Bass Music pioneer Conspira challenged producers Mushug and Dizzycutter to join forces and create a totally live dance music project. Their unique fusion of Bashment, UK Garage and Dubstep with other elements like Afrobeat and Techno has put them at the forefront of the Iberian electronic music scene with explosive performances at places like SONAR, Glade and Fabric. Ai Nadia is a throbbing afro-step monster. Shuddering sub bass and chanted vocals collide to create something very special indeed. Laika Likes it combines sweet female vocals, broken garage beats, and pounding bass to devastating effect. This is a tune firmly for the hips.Support from Buraka Som Sistema, TRG, Jahcoozi, Ghislain Poirier, Ben UFO, Cardopusher, BokBok, Reso, Sinden, Sub Swara
“Two tracks of Carnival Bass business from Portuguese duo Octa Push make up the Killers on this first EP for Monkey Steak’s new label.(It’s) a cheeky street riot that Shakes its batty wildly at any notion on genre constraint.”Allan McGrath, DJ Mag KILLERS section
“Two artists from Portugal show how dubstep’s mongrelinfluence continues its inexorable global spread, catalysinghybridisation between different genres wherever it goes… These tracks… recall early Chicago house, but where Mr Gasparov kneels to the churchy, upward-reaching side of the sound, Octa Push gets down and sweaty in the most profane, relentlessly jacking way.”Joe Muggs, The Wire
“‘1975’ is a woozy piece of two-step infused house that gradually layers up over its length, from the sparsest of synthetic melodies to an eerie carnival of sampled voices and dizzying instrumental tessellation. ‘Ai Nadia’ kicks the reverse off in fine form, its tightly syncopated beat loaded with elements from a whole host of different genres – the propulsive skip of garage, funky’s tribal machinations and the grimey crunch of kuduro. It’s the best thing on here by a long way, …The fast and furious garage hybrid of ‘Laika Likes It’ wears its UK influences more overtly, a little bit of London attitude ensnared in its suggestive female vocals and bubbling subs.”′Rory Gibb, Sonic Router

CHST007 Twilight / V (Pinch Remix) – Distance Chestplate 12″ Vinyl
Fresh from tours in the USA and Australia, Distance commits two more of his killer dubplates to vinyl, putting an evil smirk on the face of Dubstep DJs and fans everywhere. Now seven releases in, the Chestplate imprint is well and truly established as a buy-on-sight label. This time around sees a new Distance anthem on side A, accompanied by a Pinch reversion of Distance’s modern classic ‘V’ on the flip. Twilight is Distance in primetime dancefloor destruction mode. No messin’! The theremin like spooky ambient melodies oscillate and brood, making way for the trademark Distance crunching riff. It smacks of Distance on top of his game. It slays and it dips, only to come back harder. This one should remind the Dubstep new skool that you don’t have to tear your brain out to make tear out. Turn the 12 over and original badman, Bristol lynchpin Pinch, comes correct with his version of the Distance speaker wrecker V. Pinch twists up and reconfigures the original into a new sonic horror show. This should be the office ambience of torture chambers everywhere. Pinch suppresses the drive and riff of Distance’s version, accentuating the more unnerving elements; yes it’s subtle, but it’s not any less devastating. If the system packs enough punch, this one will literally turn guts. Major support comes from the crop of discerning dubstep DJs, with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. Distance fans can also check out his brand new album entitled Repercussions, out now on Planet Mu, accompanied by a second CD of all the Chestplate tracks to date.
