New D&B Releases

The ever-expanding Astrophonica enterprise continues to steer its own musical course, having set the standard with the recent Retrospect long-player. Label heads Fracture & Neptune deliver three fresh slices of intergalactic funk for another essential release and continue to switch up styles throughout in their trademark fashion. Bass-addict, hip-hop obsessive and all-round Iron Chef Fracture hits the spot once again with Bad Habit, brewing up another body-poppin breaks workout for those that like to get busy on the dancefloor. DJ support includes Friction, Jubei, Alix Perez, Consequence, Ulterior Motive, Loxy, FD, dBridge, Klute, Bailey, A Sides, Flight, Spetrasoul and Mark Pritchard. Jubei: Fracture always keeps me guessing but big drums and heavy basslines are guaranteed – “Bad Habit” delivers both A Sides: Loving “Music Y’All” – deep rolling badness from F+N – keep em coming!

With more to come from this bright young individual, Xtrah is hotly tipped to be the one to watch in 2011 and beyond.

CRIT059 – Calibre – Piano Bizness / Smooth Baby – 12″ Vinyl
With our Indian summer holding strong it seems to have spread into camp Critical too as the label that’s delivered the finest grade D&B since 2002 drops another sumptuous release from the man with the Midas touch, Calibre. Showing off his more experimental self is a release that sits perfect on the Critical mantle, sit back and enjoy. ‘Piano Bizness’ is exactly that. A simple stepping break underpins the warm piano moves and seemingly delicate bassline with subtle vocal drops that make for a beautifully mesmerizing slice of Calibre magic. Deepness for a 4am floor or those late night smoking sessions. ‘Smooth Baby’ is another lush journey into the depths of Calibre’s mind. Drawing for a large bending bline with soft subs and finger-click snares this one shows off more of the man’s ability to look outside the norm and come with something fresh and unique. A perfect match then for a label that always strives to break barriers and keep people on their toes. DJ support from those lucky enough to have it….

EXIT035 – Loxy & Resound – Burning Shadows LP Sampler – 12″ Vinyl
London’s Loxy and Finland’s Resound have always been known for their ragga-tinged, hardhitting sound, where each beat slams through with an untouchable technical precision. The two producers have been combining forces for the last three years – including their 2009 anthem ‘Green Destiny / Storyboard’ (Digital Soundboy), remixes for Kryptic Minds, additions to Renegade Hardware compilations, last year’s ‘No Money – Deadly Venom/Driving Force’ (Def Recordings), and their contribution to Exit Records’ ‘Mosaic: Volume One’ (‘Vertigo’) earlier this year. But the duo’s long-awaited debut long player marks their first collaboration that has absolutely no boundaries: as experimental and creative as it gets. True to form, as most Exit Records releases go, ‘Burning Shadows’ sees both producers finding their stride, and treading into surprising new sonic territories from a few different directions. Taking the energy and force of early tech-heavy Drum & Bass, Loxy & Resound bring the genre into a sound that’s uniquely their own. Exit Boss dBridge put it himself: “I really love how there’s the reggae side to Loxy’s productions; I thought his sound would really come together as a a whole album, especially with the tech side of Resound. With an album, you’ve got 72 minutes to fill the space with whatever your heart desires. I just love what Loxy & Resound do, so I told them to write the album that they wanted to make. I feel like I got the best out of them this way.”

RA003 – Cause4Concern / The Sect – Dead Planet / Entheogen – 12″ Vinyl
Following the huge success of the RA002 various artists EP, Rise Audio return with two very special artists for the next limited edition vinyl release RA003. A) Cause4Concern – Dead Planet – Veteran tech dnb masters Cause4Concern touch down on Rise Audio for the first time, with the highly anticipated dub plate dance floor smasher ‘Dead Panet’. With their unique cutting edge sound and style, Cause4Concern create a drifting eerie ambiance, combined with hypnotic stabs steadily rising and falling throughout the intro. As the tension and anticipation grows, Cause4Concern release one of their classic breaks engaging the listener with it’s lively rolling groove. With the huge kick and snare pounding away, the pressure builds further until all elements of the track are racing towards the drop, and after a short drum fill ‘Dead Planet’ drops into full swing with devastating effect. Cause4Concern let loose with their cutting trademark futuristic synth sounds and drop an absolutely massive bassline capable of shaking any club to it’s foundations. The track creatively progresses and morphs with slick fills and edits along the way, keeping things interesting throughout… classic Cause4Concern at their best. Serious. AA) The Sect – Entheogen – The Sect have come with something fresh and unique for their debut outing on Rise Audio. ‘Entheogen’ is something a bit different from The Sect’s usual heavy and techno edged sound. Atmospheric strings and a beautifully haunting ethnic vocal merge throughout the intro until The Sect lay down some serious slabs of deep sub bass. The pounding bass doesn’t let up once ‘Entheogen’ drops either, the track jumps to attention driven by a huge deep evolving bassine alongside hard and heavy marching drums. An ultra hard kick drum and razor sharp snare keep the groove locked down as The Sect progress the track introducing new sounds and quirky edits. The Sect are on fire at the moment following their debut LP, and with tracks such as ‘Entheogen’ it’s clear to see why… Both sides of RA003, ‘Dead Planet’ and ‘Entheogen’ have been causing a stir on dub plate throughout 2011. Receiving massive global support in clubs, festivals and on radio stations worldwide, Rise Audio continues to grow rapidly with heavy DJ support from the drum & bass scenes elite Ed Rush, Optical, Tech Itch, Cause4Concern, Bailey, Black Sun Empire, Phace, Raiden, Billain, Allied, State of Mind, Maztek… to name a few.

New Bass Music releases

CRUNCH011 – Ben Verse – Manipulate – 12″ Vinyl
Mr Verse return’s to Crunch on a dark tip. this is moody dubstep of a fine calibre. Those familiar with the kind of output Ben’s known for will not be disappointed, ‘No Solution’ rolls out with a grim determination. ‘Manipulation’’s strong rhythm, and a grimey drop tempered by smooth filtered pads over the top. If dark-style dub is your thing you’ll be feeling it. Support from Youngsta, N Type, & Hatcha.

CCB12001 – French Fries – Champagne / Hugz ft. Bambounou – 12″ Vinyl
Tell me, have you got money for this champagne, b*tch…?! That’s it, the first release of the prodigal son French Fries on his own imprint, ClekClekBoom Recordings. A massive turn in his young but already flourished career… this number sees him going deep and dark on “Champagne”, twisting the vibe with mystic flute, nasty strings and cold screwd up grime lyrics, while “Hugz” in collab with partner in crime Bambounou, drops a minimalistic yet sharp and agressive house beat, with old school pulse bass synth flavor and a naughty female vocal touch, a favorite of many big DJs right now. Beware, heavy loaded subs right here, UK style, not for the laptop heads… Limited vinyl edition of 500 copies… seriously man watchu thinking about, pre-order this thing now!

NONPLUS018 – Doubleheart – Salsa Apocalypto – 12″ Vinyl
Instra:mental’s ever-evolving imprint is preparing to drop one of the more esoteric dance singles of the year in Double Heart’s “Salsa”, a glooped out swirl of an electro-house joint that jams on a particularly twisted variety of wavelengths. What strikes initially is the oscillating breakdown, but once inside the blender we are subjected to beady, drizzled percussion and six different shades of fire. A true hybrid, JD Twitch and Neil Landstrumm’s new Doubleheart project sounds very next level, indeed. (http://thekort.com/)

MMAKEM002 – Jack Dixon & Rick Grant – Running Man EP – 12″ Vinyl
Man Make Music’s second release is a collaboration between two talented Londoners, Jack Dixon and Rick Grant. Having already made waves with individual releases on labels such as Brownswood, Hypercolour and TAKE, these two good friends now offer up a pair of brilliantly off-kilter house tracks. ‘Running Man’ is a heady mix of skipping percussion and caressing Juno synth-lines, whilst, on the flip, ‘Muted’ takes a more understated, melancholic turn, counterbalancing the ecstatic nature of the A-side. Jack and Rick’s contributions are also offset by Kevin McPhee’s weird and wonderful slow-mo interpretation of ‘Running Man’. The remix blends vocals drenched in reverb with creeping piano riffs and shows yet another musical side of a man garnering plaudits from all corners for his unique style.

DARKESTRAL006 – Transportation AAD – Last Train To Lexington / U.F.Unk – 12″ Vinyl
Spec: Reverse Board Sleeve features Gold Metallic Pantone logo and lettering front and back, Pantone matched labels, plastic inners.Darkestral was set up as an imagined cinematically orientated sound space allowing producers creative room to make music of a more visual nature, within or outside of their percieved genre. Continuing this theme, Transportation AAD was dreamt up to bring together Drkstr’s (label owner) short film script ideas with Boddika’s exemplary talent at interpretation and production so that over the course of the studio sessions, the script could come to life in audio form. The refers in part to a vessel (Transportation) descended from the Darkestral mothership and to the recording path process, (AAD) Analogue Analogue Digital. a) Transportation AAD ‘Last Train To Lexington’ 4am, Brooklyn, N.Y.C. early 80′s, the last graffed up metallic shell makes its way on a fraught course. Tension, heightened awareness of the grate of wheels on track and late night track repairs in dingy tunnels. A journey that must be undertaken. aa) Transportation AAD ‘U.F.Unk’ A UFO journey between space stations encapsulating gravitational pull, air brakes and subsequent landing. On arrival the beats reduce elements of the last 20 years underground music – detroit, electro, dnb and ragga into a cohesive sound.

DARKESTRAL007 – Transportation AAD / Grey Goo / Vaalhaala – Pagoda / Lost Transmissions / Phaethon / See Me – 12″ Vinyl
Spec: Reversed board sleeve features Silver Metallic Pantone logo and lettering front and back, Pantone matched labels, plastic inners. A selection of short cinematic explorations taking in the ancient, the far reaches of the galaxy and the end-time, featuring Transportation AAD (Boddika/Alex Instra:Mental & Drkstr), Grey Goo (Boddika/Alex Instra:Mental), and Vaalhaala (to remain anonymous..). a1) Transportation AAD ‘Pagoda’ Bladerunner reimagined as 18th Century Kyoto, droplets fall and splash wooden deck from angled eaves in a rained drenched atmosphere, whilst distant drums beat a tender solumn ritual. a2) Grey Goo ‘Lost Transmissions’ The end of time encapsulated, a broken UFO floats through a turbulent shower of space debris, still emiting signals to an unloving universe, no destination, no chance of return. aa1) Vaalhaala ‘Phaethon’ Kaleidoscopic journey toward a lost sun deep in the galaxy, where starburst spectal colours stream through the viewing platform and a lone pilot sees images previously unimagined. aa2) Grey Goo ‘See Me’ Pensive strings and radio static permeate the final journey on this mission, clumps of debris tampoline off the side of the craft as memories flood back to an ancient time and a glint of light enters the scene before we move on to the next undetermined destination with a sense of ease and knowing.

CIV032 – Drums Of Death – Red Waves EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following on from the dark atmosphere of ‘Black Waves’, Drums Of Death returns with the next in the sequence: ‘Red Waves’. Four tracks of ecstatic electronics displaying it’s makers love for techno and house music, all ramped up with big sounds and stripped back arrangements. ‘Tear The Box Apart’ opens the EP with marching snares rolling under a massive lead synth. Toms, snares and claps… the classic palette of the 808 drum machine is well covered but it’s the unique poly-rhythmic synth work and angular arrangements that set the track apart from those of retro-fetishists. Cheeky and fun, ‘The Jerk’ shows that simple elements do a big roller make. So addictive, it’s the bouncing bass and buzzing lead that drag you along. A UK Garage groove takes control whilst the hollowed out barrel toms go for the gut. ‘Venice Beach’ crafts bright chords that swirl and build. The infectious melody makes way for pitched bleeps and a towering ‘Reese’ bassline. Tested extensively in DoD’s frenzied live shows, ‘Venice Beach’ is the glowing, melodic heart at the centre of the adrenaline-fuelled ‘Red Waves’ collection. In ‘Bang The Drum’ Drums Of Death talks to us through a vocoder… “Just bang the drum and kill the noise, mute the synth and then the voice”. Hardly a ballad, this missive represents the newer Drums of Death sound… taught, electronic machine funk. Holding reverence for techno’s godfathers but also for it’s wayward children like Cristian Vogel, an elastic bassline lurches around rattling 909 hi-hats. ‘Bang The Drum’ rounds off a highly energetic EP that continues the ‘Waves’ odyssey of it’s composer.

New Bass Music Promos

DP060 – Matty G – Back To The Bay – 12″ Vinyl
The opening hits of the percussion stay smooth and relaxed, and the instruments come in one-by-one – first the synth, then the strings, then the brass – to create an experience that’s both engaging and relaxing. This is the sort of music I would listen to if I cruised the streets of San Francisco in the evenings. As “Back To The Bay” wraps up and pulls us into his remix of “Screw Up,” we get a dose of Subscape’s intensity, but it’s quickly pulled back into Matty G’s signature low-bass, hip-hop/dubstep fusion beats. “Jam Like A Tek” adds in some vocal hooks to get the crowd chanting – and you’re missing out if you don’t add this into your mix. Deep kick drums, a snappy snare, big distortion on the scratchy bass wobbles, and the vocals all come together perfectly to create a track that’ll get people grinding like mad on the dancefloor.

DB063 – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – DJ Cra$Y (BrEaCh Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
I first met Ben Westbeech (BrEaCh) at a dinner in London. He was sitting across from me and I found out he made “Fatherless” a year ago which interested me right away. We got to chatting and the conversation took an unexpected turn and i heard the following story. As a kid BrEaCh grew up in Hertford, north of London, where early UK rave pioneers like Omni Trio and 2 Bad Mice where from. His Dad was friends with 2 Bad Mice and was surrounded by musicians and DJs. 2 Bad Mice had a friend called Paul, aka DJ Cra$Y. He used to make tunes back in the early rave days but sadly did too many pills and went mad. When Paul was taken into mental care his old dat format tapes got left at BrEaCh’s Dad’s house. 20 years later, BrEaCh found them in the garage in and old box marked “music.” He started listening through and found some cool old jungle vibes going on. The tracks ‘Just – E’ and ‘I Need You’ are remixes of two of the tracks found on the old DJ Cra$Y recording sessions… These are a rare hybrid crossover records between jungle and house and they are massive. So peace to Dj Cra$y wherever you are and respect to BrEaCh for putting these together. best, VonStroke.

Commercial Suicide present “Compilation” Released 5th December

Posted 28 November 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

The album to end all albums is on target for release on 05.12.2011. It is not fully understood how any other albums will be able to compete after the ‘Commercial Suicide Compilation’ has been released but the world has been warned.

Commercial Suicide is the vanguard of Drum and Bass and has been since it’s inception 10 years ago. Proving a fertile breeding ground for new approaches to dancefloor Drum and Bass and beyond, it is only now after 10 years that a full compilation has taken shape.

Break, Calibre, Klute, Dub Phizix, Vicious Circle; the list of con- tributors reads like a who’s who of contemporary drum and bass production. The Commercial Suicide ‘Compilation’ features 13 of the best d&b tunes of all styles, from established names to the very hottest new faces on the scene.

The music business has changed immensely over the 10 years since Commercial Suicide was born, but one thing has remained constant; a great compilation can define a genre and it’s era. Klute has once again proved his peerless A&R skills with an album that reflects and defines the Commercial Suicide sound in the year 2011, while pointing the entire Drum and Bass genre forward with it’s foot firmly on the gas pedal.

New D&B CD

SABCD001 – Various Artists – Sun And Bass Selection 2011 – CD
Back in 2003 we came up with the adventurous concept to organize an international Drum & Bass party in the small Italian town of San Teodoro on Sardinia. Fueled by the idea of inviting some friends over to the beautiful island to enjoy some good music in a breath-taking landscape, we have put a lot of effort to bring this vision to life. It still puts a smile on our faces when thinking back how we were driving some of Drum & Bass‘greatest DJs in a tiny rusty Italian car to the local clubs… It is the authenticity and true love for the music that make SUNANDBASS this special happening, inspiring visitors as well as artists from all over the world. Often referred to as ‘Drum & Bass’ best kept secret’, the festival with the amazing family like atmosphere has grown to being one of the most influential events in the scene, bringing Drum & Bass music out of the urban clubs to some of Europe’s finest beaches and fantastic open air venues. Every time we return to San Teodoro to celebrate a full week of great music and unforgettable parties it fills us with pride and joy to see so many familiar faces and to feel the positive energy. We are thrilled to present SUNANDBASS »Selection«, a compilation featuring a number of artists who have over the past 7 years contributed to making the event what it is today. With 13 exclusive tracks this album is an homage to the festival and all the people involved in making it happen year after year. From heavy bass rides to easy summer vibes it reflects the full musical range and brings back some of those special moments we spent together. The additional mix by resident DJ Utah Jazz also contains some great classic tunes played throughout the years at the festival. We would like to thank all the people that have worked with us on putting together this fantastic album. This one is for all the SUNANDBASS family!

Please Note: There will be no separate CD available. Album will only be released as 3×12” w/CD shrink wrapped together. Condition is my drum and bass follow up to EVEN IF i originally wanted to make an album that was more dance floor influenced, to have a more light hearted approach, in some ways it has that, but i couldn’t stop myself from making the deeper material, for years i have wrestled with the subtle side of drum and bass, my journey has been one that tries to attain the simple groove, to keep removing the layers of this music, this album is an expression of this, and how im still feeling the underdog waiting for the cycle. It came about as it always has and that’s the way its supposed to, enjoyable and moving fast to discover the stillness. Free CD contains the following tracks: 1 Calibre feat. PRODUCT012 – Craggz & Parallel – Future Shock (Jubei Remix) / Turn The Page (Need For Mirrors Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Having jumped back in the D&B saddle towards the end of last year with their stunning album ‘Turn The Page’ there’s been no turning back for Craggz & Parallel who’ve immersed themselves back in the depths the studio that they share with D Bridge and Kasra. With an array of beats lined up and ready to go C&P decided to let a couple of friends loose on two killer jams from said album; Need For Mirrors and Jubei, please stand up! Jubei jumps up to add his take on ‘Future Shock’…and what a job he does. The intro is sick, the drop is sick and the tough drums are just….sick! Bass stabs and surges into the mix like a precision swordsman as the track gets to work demolishing those who bare witness. An awesome dropout ensues and we’re back into it right up to the end. Big bad and very, very heavy. Having been a big favourite with the A-list in its original form (even opening Andy C’s latest Nightlife mix album), the title track ‘Turn The Page’ was already a heavy slab of D&B but Need For Mirrors have managed to draw it deeper still. The eerie intro elements remain along with a solid two-step break and that spoken vocal, then it’s left up to some classic Full Cycle inspired bass work to rock the speakers for a naughty but oh so nice re-lick from the NFM duo. As far as remix 12’s go they don’t come much better than this.

Both tunes have had great responses on dance floors across the world, and the versatility of these beats will ensure you keep them in your bag for years.

C4CEVR001 – Task Horizon – Kill The Pain / Letting Go – 12″ Vinyl
Kill The Pain: ‘Epic’ is the only way to describe the extended intro of Kill the Pain, featuring acoustic guitar and an earnest male vocal. Then, just before two minutes in, things quickly take a nasty turn as choppy breaks splinter into pieces and the bassline ‘reboots’ The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. An aggressive, genre bending, sure fire floor smasher. Letting Go: Teaming up with Kryteria for the flip, a eurphoric, trancey intro leads into a chainsaw reece, setting the scene for the chaotic chiaroscuro to come: beyond the drop sweeping synths and ethereal vocal snippets somehow successfully coalesce with heavily edited breaks and sawing bass, creating a kind of beautiful violence. Subsequently, side effects of Letting Go include spontaneous eruptions of feet on the floor and hands in the air.

DIFF010 – Frederic Robinson – Laughing at Clouds – 10″ Vinyl
Limited to 150 numbered copies Pink Vinyl pressing. Somewhere over western Europe, an un-identified falling object crashed landed causing a massive bang, and a ginormous Banana shaped smoke cloud. Frederic, a local artistic young chap was so inspired by this hilariously funny giant cloud that covered the whole sky as far as he could see; he ran indoors to take cover, and wrote a little summer step d&b beat, called ‘Laughing at Clouds’ – which seemed to draw a lot of attention. Out of the studio window, Frederic could see what seemed to be a pink giraffe giving it some serious head-nodding action. By the second drop Leonard (The pink giraffe) was dancing so heavily that he caused a small tremor somewhere over in the states, where young up & coming producer Melo seemed to pick up the transmission. While in his sonic laboratory he managed to transfer his latest project (Affirmation) through the current, where Frederic decided to make his first remix project, which pretty much made Leonard pass out after all the summer stepping….

MEDI048 – Goth Trad – Babylon Fall EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
It’s been a long time coming but finally Deep Medi are proud to present, Japan’s biggest Dubstep export V’s arguably one of Jamaica’s all-time biggest stars Max Romeo to bring you ‘Babylon Fall’. This is Goth-Trad’s latest release and last before his album. The EP leads with ‘Babylon Fall’ featuring Max Romeo. Max Romeo is best known for his album ‘War In A Babylon” produced by Lee Scratch Perry at the Black Art Studios featuring classics, ‘One Step Forward’, ‘War In A Babylon’ and the Reggae anthem ‘Chase the Devil’. Goth-Trad lays down a trademark bass heavy, rumbling rhythm with Max Romeo still showing after all these years that his vocal is still standing strong and lyrical content bringing positive vibes in these troubled times. ‘Falling Leaf’ and ‘Sublimation’ see Goth-Trad in a deep techno mood. ‘Falling Leaf’ is a relentless barrage of sub bass and industrial dub mechanics whilst Sublimation is more stealth like with its late night inner city running’s, think Japan via Detroit touching down in the UK. With ‘Itinerant Priest’ we have saved the biggest dance-floor destruction till last, from the opening chimes, organ drone and intense rave stabs through to the fierce pulsating bass you know this has got pure, unadulterated mayhem written all over it.

DP057 – Subscape – Universal EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Since his debut release on Dub Police back in 2008, Subscape has come a long way, quickly emerging as one of the most exciting young talents to come out of the dubstep scene. We are extremely proud to announce that he is returning stronger than ever with a brand new EP showcasing a decisive evolution in his sound. Kicking off the EP is the anthemic ‘Turn Me On’, a track built to cause havoc on any dancefloor. The dynamic combination of ecstatic synth lines and mechanized bass tones fuse together with the swinging snare hits to harness a new energy in Subscape’s music. ‘Square Albert’ takes this energy and twists it on its head with galloping percussion and colourful rave-inspired synths before bursting into double time drum lines and shooting off in a new direction. ‘Universal’ is a step into the future carried by a gargantuan wave of bass pressure as the alien lead synth line soars high into the atmosphere and the growling bassline and destructive snares force the track home. Rounding off the vinyl package, ‘Apple Candy’ takes things deeper with seductive strings, yearning vocal samples and synth lines. With an ever-growing list of international bookings stretching out before him and a growing arsenal of music, it looks like his journey is only just beginning and we are proud to be a part of it. Watch this space!

DISF016 – Echo Park – Fiber Optic – 12″ Vinyl
Out of an 8.8 earthquake, riots and severe illness comes one of the most joyful records of the year. Brian Gibbs aka Echo Park has had a colourful life to say the least, living and making music in L.A., Tokyo, Madrid, Mexico City and now Santiago, Chile where he lives with his young family. Previously a producer of dark hip hop and dub, a series of disasters made him confront mortality and decide it was time to make the music that is closest to his heart: luscious, sunshine-infused electro-funk full of laid back attitude and “real songs”. Skream has always been a lover of disco, boogie and electro – as anyone who’s heard one of his specialist sets or his slick’n'sleazy remix of Chromeo will know. It took just one hearing of Brian’s first Echo Park tracks via a mutual friend to snap them up for Disfigured Dubz. In fact he has chosen Echo Park for the first full album on the label… but first comes this killer single, a shmoooove bit of vocoder funk that sets the tone for Echo Park’s twin obsessions with technology and romance. Bundled with it are a gutbusting ravemonster of a rework by 12th Planet & Flinch that somehow still keeps the soul of the track intact, and Jon Convex taking it way underground with a deeper-than-deep analogue techno version. There’s something for everyone here and this is just the beginning.

NONPLUS017 – Lowtec – Coldred – 12″ Vinyl
Lowtec returns to Nonplus with his second release on the label and smothers us with his sonic art yet again. a) Lowtec ‘Coldred’ This piece of steel strong Berlin edged Tech house pumps along from the outset, leaving no doubt that this is one to get on and enjoy. As the title suggests, the cold dark eerie sound is built for warehouses and masterfully grows into a “Lost for words” type tune. b1) Lowtec ‘Darrynane’ ‘Darrynane’ is the first on the flip. Uncomfortable jittering beat compression is sketched into a subtle shift of swirling synths and vocal samples that drive this tune along on a hypnotic groove. b2) Lowtec ‘Twizel’ ‘Twizel’ is an attention grabber from the outset. The woodblock sounds and the evening session is in progress…then the synths lead and drift into a massive sound bomb of uber lusciousness, leaving the beat behind temporarily. Upon its return, the tune lifts into a late night heads down shoulder twisting groove monster…and when the Harpsichord drops, say “hi” to the hairs on the back of your neck.

3024016 – Mosca – Dom Perignon – 12″ Vinyl
Throughout 3024′s short history, the label has always carried a heavy trace of techno in its makeup: an inevitable reflection of its founder’s roots in early 90s warehouse parties. Our 15th release bears that influence out, and stands as the label’s most expansive release so far – a 4 track EP from the utterly inimitable Mosca. Leaping straight onto our radar with his opening combination of the ‘Square One / Nike’ 12’ and ‘Gold Bricks, I See You,’ it’s been a long-held ambition to work with a producer whose diversity has never once strayed into tokenism. Renowned for his glacial work rate, we bided our time as the Mosca sound veered off into new territories – and it’s with great pleasure we present the fruits of our patience here. Opening proceedings of Mosca’s ‘Wavey’ EP is ‘Dom Perignon’, a cavernous roller with a gravity inverting bass drum and dub-infused atmospherics. Developing both the intricacy of its drum programming and the implicit tension of its arrangement towards the sunrise, it’s the perfect entry point for this new side of the Mosca sound. ‘Orange Jack’ further develops this gloaming swing, both deeper into the recesses of aquatic frequency while simultaneously ramping up the groove into ultra loose woodblock territory as looped snatches of Hip Hop acapella drive out any lingering ghost’s. Tearing any hint of historical reverence away is a constantly warping bass part that is more fissure than line, and bubbling textures hinting at further shifts to come. Immediately intensifying proceedings, ‘Jager’s renewed urgency guides the EP back towards more conventional Techno, in form if not implementation. Huge phased hi-hats and gaseous sub frequencies push a Friedrichshain pulse relentlessly forward, briefly collapsing as a disembodied fire & brimstone host exhorts an unidentified audience (or maybe the track) back onto its feet and onwards with yet more resolve. Coiling and uncoiling elements of the arrangement in this second half, a single electric piano chord makes its appearance, providing an understated link back to the previous 2 tracks’ roots. Available as a digital-only track, ‘Wray & Neph’ takes the component influences of its 3 vinyl bound siblings and fuses them together as the track both hardest to classify – and also the most classically Mosca sounding. Queasy waves of synth are joined by tight hi hats and a dislocated kick before a clipped percussive swing emerges out of the haze. Marrying a defiantly 8 bar-esque bass rumble and sporadic fizzing synth breaks with shifts back into stripped down 4×4 Motorik it encapsulates The Wavey EP and all its murky splendor. As ever, Erosie blesses 3024-016 with the latest sleeve in his ever evolving series of work for 3024, in the style that has defined the label as much as its A&R policy.

SEP001 – Sepalcure – Pencil Pimp – 12″ Vinyl
Sepalcure are poised to release their eponymous debut full length through Hotflush this November. In advance of the album a key track, “Pencil Pimp”, will be released as a single, backed with an exclusive track, “I’m Alright”. The single reflects Sepalcure’s approach to the album, where Travis Stewart (Machinedrum) and Praveen Sharma (Braille) utilize the longer format to develop their collaborative process and incorporate the diverse influences present in their solo work to their sonic mixture. Machinedrum’s much-heralded Room(s) LP and Sharma’s recent EPs on Hotflush and Rush Hour reflect the impact of the frenetic, paranoid rhythms of the modern Chicago underground on the wider electronic world and the return to vogue of another musical style that originated from that city: House. But both artists add a crucial sense of emotional sensibility and melodic sensuality that defines the Sepalcure sound.

CBR002 – Kromestar – Parallel Sounds EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following from the Cosmic Bridge debut release – a collaboration with label head Om Unit titled Solar Cycle / Merkabah – UK bass music heavyweight Kromestar returns for the label’s second release with a solo four-track EP titled Parallel Sounds. A pioneer of the early dubstep sound, Kromestar has spent most of the late 00s releasing on labels such as Mala Mystikz’s Deep Medi, Southside and Fantastic 3. Since 2010 he’s been busy exploring new sonic territories and this experimentation shines through this EP for Cosmic Bridge. Across the four tracks, Kromestar delves into low-slung 80-90bpm realms while still exercising the bottom end pressure and infectious swing he’s become known for. Parallel Sounds also includes the hotly-tipped beatless production The Outer Limits a collaboration with Team Starfleet that does away with the standard template and results in a deeply unique experience. The tracks on Parallel Sounds have been getting heavy rotation on Om Unit’s Maisonette Electronique podcasts as well as on his Boiler Room appearance (http://boilerroom.tv/om-units-45-min-mix/). Jay 5ive has also been supporting the music on the pioneering Rinse FM. Response so far has been both positive and overwhelming leading to this release in the closing months of 2011. Alongside his forthcoming releases on the Bass N’ Love label, the Parallel Sounds EP sheds more light on Kromestar as a producer genuinely not afraid to continue moving forward and experiment sonically. It will also no doubt cement him as a producer worth checking out for each and everytime as we enter 2012. Genre-wise we’ll leave it up to you… Just don’t go crazy now!

Love is the Devil is Blu Mar Ten’s follow-up to the runaway success of previous album, Natural History and showcases another development in the trio’s consistent work at the cutting edge of Drum & Bass, musically, conceptually and technically. From the epic vistas of Into the Light, the intricate musicality of All Thoughts Are Prayers, the brooding darkness of Hollow Men, the sweetness of High Hopes, the shockingly technical Blue Skies and the ethereal Sweet Little Supernova, the album represents two years of solid work and delivers tracks of pure quality from every known corner of the genre and some that have yet to be invented. Love is the Devil is another step in Blu Mar Ten’s mission to stretch Drum & Bass into new forms; sometimes beautiful, sometimes poignant, sometimes aggressive but always lovingly crafted. Love is the Devil features collaborations with a range of talented names from dance music and beyond. Blind Soul: This achingly melodic track features the deft touch of Drum & Bass wunderkind Stray. Whisper: Based on an original track by Dave Randall (Faithless / Slovo), Whisper showcases the vocal skills of dance music legend Kirsty Hawkshaw. The Fourth: A deeply melancholy track featuring brand new US singer / songwriter Jenni Potts. Jenni’s bittersweet delivery brings an unexpected twist to The Fourth’s intricate production. Another Year: Fresh from working on Bonobo’s new album project, Mike Lesirge of London brass trio Killer Horns brings his talents to Another Year in the form of oozing, sultry sax work. Still the One: InsideInfo is renowned for his thundering basslines and pounding drums. Coupling his skills with Blu Mar Ten’s denser orchestration has given birth to Still The One, the first mutant offspring of this unlikely musical hookup. Sweet Little Supernova: Reprising her work on Natural History, Rochelle Parker turns in a sensual and ethereal vocal performance. Into the Light: Having already had his work picked up by Hospital Records, fresh UK talent Airwalker joins Blu Mar Ten to deliver a blistering attack of synths and drumwork on Into the Light, a definitive set-opener for any DJ. High Hopes: Classically trained and with an ear for uplifting orchestration, INtrepid brings the full force of his talent to High Hopes turning in a dense matrix of live instrumentation, from the sax to the xaphoon.

New D&B Releases

DMND006 – LSB – Subdued / Beep – 12″ Vinyl
In 2011 Swiss run Demand Records has proven something that hundreds of start-up labels every year fail to: that you can start a successful record label from scratch without compromising on the quality of the music. In an ocean of mediocre imprints and teeth-grating noise slapped together on home studio set ups, this label demands more – and the support they’ve received from Brookes Brothers, DJ Hype, DJ Marky, Netsky, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, the mighty UKF Drum & Bass channel and more is proof positive that Demand Records is doing something right. Their next release sees them do something else right, sign a single from Luke Beavon a.k.a LSB. Having released sporadically since 2002, LSB is hardly new to the game, but this year sees him at his production best with a fresh set of releases. Straight out of the box is ‘Subdued’, an impeccably produced slice of melancholic drum & bass that Kiss FM’s DJ Hype describes as “Ice cold”. Gradually building and growing, this is a track that slowly creeps its way into your head and then doesn’t let go. Gentle bass trickery and sweeping atmospherics are the order of the day and this one is sure to provide a momentary moment of calm amongst the D&B minutia. ‘Beep’ doesn’t disappoint either as LSB creates an equally good, but altogether different, vibe. Tiny scatterings of drums are underlain with percussive energy that roll the track along as expertly placed sound effects intersperse with precision and a deep and deadly sub bass ensures people’s ribcages will be rattling.

EAST086 – A Sides – Ain’t Nobody / Temperature’s Rising – 12″ Vinyl
This 12” features two wicked tracks from the new A Sides album ‘Mysterious Vibes’. A Sides describes both in his own words.: I love “Temperature’s Rising” as it’s a perfect example of the rough with the smooth which I love, plus I took Fats’ vocals a step higher by having him work harmonies, something which he rarely does. I love the piano, always have since back in the day :) ! “Ain’t Nobody” is also a special track. It’s emotional to me and inspired by a certain somebody :) I love the strings, the smooth bass, the piano (again) and the beats which all create real soulful, uplifting vibes. 2NDRP12015 – Gerry Read – Roomland – 12″ Vinyl
There are a number of producers who are known for being prolific; Roska, Cooly G, Benga to name a few, and now Gerry Read can be added to that list. The Cambridgeshire producer has only a handful of actual releases to his name, but a vault of hundreds. We can well imagine his hardrive straining from the sheer velocity of ideas that he sends our way. Raw, urgent and frequently off kilter, Gerry’s production challenges your ears but always manages to lock in the groove. Roomland is classic Gerry, bristling with syncopated energy, driven along by crisply stretched rim shots, muted key stabs and a wickedly snakey shaker, only to be pierced by a killer synth line, which has won support from a host of key tastemakers and DJs including Untold and Ben UFO among others. On the remix, is rising star Youandewan, who has been getting love from the underground dance press, as well as a debut release of deeper dubstep orientated material on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label. Here the “north Londoner” delves deep under the skin of Roomland, digging out the underlying essence and subtly incorporating its rhythmic character into a reshaped, dubbed out house/ techno lather. You can still hear the slight broken beat, but the synths get more covert, almost throbbing away and building the pressure as the baseline peeks in and out; subtle and powerful. One of our favourite illustrators/ artists returns for his 3rd time to adorn the label artwork. Portuguese man of mystery UIU, delivers his most abstract design to date, an awkwardly symmetrical sludge of technicolor. Playful and oddly brilliant. Check out his further madness here: www.Uiu-Uiu.com

GHM001 – Graphics – Wiping The Eye / Name This – 12″ Vinyl
Oxford/London/Leeds based newcomer Graphics is responsible for the first release on the long gestated Granholme label. Brian Eno was once quoted as ‘not wanting to contribute to the glut of CD’s’ in the world. Granholme’s ambitions as a label are modest, but if we can do anything to detract from the glut of painfully beige electronic music available in 2011 then that will be considered a small victory. The title track crossed our path in February of this year and was the catalyst for finally making the label a reality. It’s blend of intricate percussion, pounding kicks and swamp voodoo atmospherics are bound together by a relentless forward momentum rarely heard. Were we not embarrassed by such brazen hype building we’d say it fuses classic techno to the jungle derived energy of early Big Apple releases. Shit, it’s happened again. ‘Name This’ reigns in the most unhinged flailing of it’s predecessor and revels in a focussed chain gang swing. Heavy on Dub’ish atmospherics and sweeping chords it’s a more discrete animal than it’s other half with methodically intensified tension threatening to swallow the arrangement whole. Exclusive to the digital version is ‘D-Transition’. A listless voice unsuccessfully self interrogates as decaying minor chords mount a further assault on the listeners good humour. As things threaten to get overly oppressive a heavily dampened 4/4 kick leads into a rhythm section that gradually comes to the boil before locking into a series of percussion and bass led drops. Finally we have the Zoltan remix of D-Transition. Due to be used as a promotional tool in 1 the weeks leading up to release, it takes the original and adds some hefty drum programming along with a gloriously queasy new melody for the 4am push towards daylight.

RS1109 – Space Dimension Controller – The Pathway To Tiraquon6 – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Limited Blue Vinyl pressing. The Pathway to Tiraquon6 is the prequel to the Space Dimension Controller debut album ‘Welcome To Mikrosector-50’ to be released in 2012. In the mid 24th Century, a cosmic accident caused Mr. 8040, the Space Dimension Controller, to spiral back through time to the year 2009. Over the past year, stranded in our time, and confined to his Electropod. Mr. 8040 has been preparing an account of the events that led to the discovery of Mikrosector-50 and the creation of the Tiraquon6 security barrier. This is the story of the Pathway to Tiraquon6. In the year 2257 AD, Planet Earth was invaded by an alien race known as the Pulsovians. Having had no previous encounters with a hostile alien race, the humans were completely unprepared for an invasion of this scale. Using technology unique to their race, they drained the energy of the sun and as an alternative to living on a slowly dying planet, they offered mankind the opportunity to work as slaves on their home planet, Cosmo30. Though most took this opportunity, there was a small coalition of humans that sought to flee Earth and find a new home somewhere in deep space. It was then that the Pulsovian leader, Xymah the Usurper, coordinated a surprise attack on the escape vessels as they attempted to launch. Many vessels successfully escaped the attack and ventured deep into space, others were destroyed, including that of the President of Earth and his cabinet. For years, the last remnants of free man were confined to deep space with no government, no order and no hope. That was until a security officer named Max Tiraquon offered to travel alone to neighbouring galaxies in an attempt to find a planet suitable for human habitation. Just over a year into Max’s exploration, contact with his electropod was lost, it was thought he had been lost to space. Years later, an unidentifiable craft was detected on the radar of the main vessel. It was Max, he had used the fluorescent trails left behind by his electropod to navigate his way back to the ship. Upon his return, he told of a planet in Mikrosector-50 of the deep space grid with an atmosphere similar to that of Earth. The humans set a course to the planet immediately and on their arrival began to plan the construction of their new home. Max founded the Tiraquon Security Council and construction began on the Tiraquon Security Barrier, and a soldier named Mr. 8040 was appointed to patrol the the barrier. Mr. 8040 was made Deputy Space Dimension Controller and for the following years successfully maintained order whilst Mikrosector-50 was constructed. Until one day, whilst repairing a light beam in the Quadrasector of the barrier, Mr. 8040′s electropod almost slammed into the beam. To escape certain death, 8040 activated the micron accelerator of his electropod, which inadvertently sent him back through time to the year 2009.

The Aliens return with another Anthem. There has been a lot of speculation as to who these bad men are, with most guesses being people who have released on the SSDS label or other South Londoners. Some of the main guesses have been Kromestar, Coki, Cotti, F-1, N-Type, and Kosha, but I’m not convinced anyone actually knows who is in it.

New D&B CD

HE002CD – Makoto – Souled Out – CD
It’s been 4 years since the release of Makoto’s last full length album, Believe In My Soul, on Good Looking Records. A lot has changed in the world of electronic music since then, and as an artist, Makoto has also grown considerably. Spreading his wings by first establishing his own record label, Human Elements, Makoto has kept up a steady release flow of both his own music and other artists through his own label as well as others’ such as DJ Marky’s Innerground Records and Fabio’s Creative Source. By 2010 however, Makoto felt the time had come to once again return to the depths of his studio in Tokyo to craft another full length album. For the most part, Souled Out explores new frontiers for the artist primarily known as Japan’s drum and bass MVP. Consisting of a wide variety of tempos and beats, the album is, at first, quite a different experience when compared to his past work. However, it quickly becomes clear that the trademark Makoto style of bass heavy energy drenched with funk & soul still flows freely through each song. There has also been a decided shift away from an over-use of samples and the result is a much more musical experience, which takes the listener on a journey through many emotions. Lush chords, fat basses from hardware synths and a good number of exceptionally talented vocalists and instrumentalists breathe life into the tracks, delivering that human touch Makoto strives for in his music. Feelings run deep on the album, and there’s a good amount of uplifting and emotion driven tunes which fit a variety of moods. “Tower of Love”, which features vocalist Paul Randolph of Jazzanova fame, is one of the freshest drum and bass tunes of the past decade, fusing heavy bass with a classic Motown sound in a way that has simply never been done before. “Girl I’m Running Back 2 U”, featuring singerChristian Urich – a member of the jazz band Tortured Soul who has worked with the likes of Incognito & DJ Spinna – tells a tale of regretting a missed chance at love in a style that truly shows Makoto’s musical diversity. While the song is deep and could easily fit into a club garage or house set, its infectious funk and bumpy drums mean that it would sound just right on prime time radio. At the other end of the scale, the track “Woe” written with Makoto’s long time vocalist partner Deeizm, is an empowered melancholic piece. With rising pads and sultry, heartfelt lyrics, minimal but heavy beats and a synthetic crescendo that punches through the speakers to send a shiver down your spine. To put it simply, the track really is something special. Alongside the slower tempos, “Keep Me Down” featuring Angela Johnson features Makoto’s trademark sound of a heavy bass line and amen break rumbling underneath huge soulful vocals and driving chords. Undeniably a guaranteed dance floor favourite. Souled Out doesn’t just deliver the same level of quality you’ve come to expect from Makoto, it expands on it. There’s something for everyone on the release, and the album is a testament to the breadth of experience and talent the producer commands, as he easily shifts between tempos, genres and moods, while still maintaining his style of soul infused, funky, futuristic and forward electronic music.

UM005 – Fields – Foundations / Unspoken – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After his brother Villem dropped 2 slices of ice cold beats for the last Utopia release, Fields comes with the polar opposite with summer flavours for his first ever solo 12″. The A side is ‘Foundations’, a warm sunshine-filled bass heavy roller with a touch of the melancholy. Driven by simplistic drums shrouded wonderfully by subtle percussion, this roller hits heavy with the bassline, timed perfectly out of a down-sweeping Rhodes, backed-up by a loopy vocal which can only move you. On the flip is a track called ‘Unspoken’, a deep sub-filled minimal affair. It gently warms you with nuanced harps and percussion, before hitting you with stripped-back drums and a wall of sub bass. Dj support: LTJ Bukem, Bailey, Loxy, Total Science, Break, Spectrasoul, Mikal, Flight, Survival and many distinguished others.

2NDRP12013 – DjRum – ‘Mountains EP’ Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
A main player behind the seminal Yardcore nights in London and with previous releases with On the Edge and Smokin Sessions, DjRUM has always existed on the alternative edge of a number of scenes, but after producing a stunning remix of LV and Message To Bears ft Zaki Ibrahim “Explode” for 2nd Drop’s last release, his talent is finally getting the recognition it deserves. Now 2nd Drop are proud to present a full EP of original material. The DjRum EP will be released in two parts. EP Part 1: Undercoat leads the first part in typical DjRUM style; multiple layers of gravelly, heavily charged atmosphere, ever shifting beat patterns, murky pockets of drums and percussion and his trademark use of epic strings. This moody cut builds and builds throughout and before you know it the beats have jumped from half step into sultry techno. Mountains pt 1 on the flip picks up from where Undercoat left off, dropping straight into pulsing techno drums that gallop away and build into sheets of shifting emotive synths, accompanied with haunting vocals snippets. Packed with detail and nuance, this track keep on giving with every listen. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record. Check more of his work at www.matttaylor.co.uk

SCREW006 – LoKo – Keep Rising / Keep Rising (KOAN Sound Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Screwloose is all about gripping basslines that tear dance floors apart. This release features a wonderfully original D&B track by LoKo along with a beast of remix by KOAN Sound. What makes this a great release is the fact that the two tracks are a real contrast, both at very different tempos and styles. Both tracks are pushing D&B/Dubstep/Bass music forward.

Embassy brings you two concrete tracks from the artists who’ve been on the tip of everyone’s tongue, CLICKS + WHISTLES. Comprised of Jorge Hernandez and Pete Evans, they have been gaining an incredible amount of steam within the Bass Music community over the last year. A. The fagship tune from CLICKS + WHISTLES, CRANBERRY GOOSE, showcases Pete and Jorge’s flair for richly dense harmonies and immensely inspired sound design. B. Referencing their infuences of southern hip hop, the pair give us one sexy enough to make anyone in the club dance with out thinking twice, RADIATOR, is a soothing jam dripping with heart and passion.

2NDRP12014 – DjRum – ‘Mountains EP’ Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
The second and third parts of the Mountains suite nestle snugly together on pt 2 of the EP. Dissolving from the lush techno of Mountains pt 1, Rum lightens the pressure accenting the melodic motifs of pt 1 adding an almost lilting, percussively funky rhythm, only to be broken with a galloping gabba style beat washed over by his trademark string and synth blanket. However, the pressure is short lived, as once again the track gives way to a verdant and lush pasture of classic Rum ambience. Turiya on the flip pays subtle homage to Alice Coltrane by using her later adopted spiritual name. And you can hear her ethereal jazz and harp qualities evoked through his use of melody, before dropping into a broken 2-step bump with a nicely chopped up vocal. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record. Check more of his work at www.Matttaylor.co.uk

Pangaea turns out the lights and and blesses Hemlock with two of his toughest productions yet. ’Hex’ channels the spirit of ’92 via Plastic People, picking up the most eccentric, deranged vocal along the way. ‘Eeeeeechiiiieeee’. On the flip ‘Fatalist’ is a dark-side joint of the highest order… ‘Alright. Listen. Listen. Listen.’

LIVE001 – Lorca and Gerry Read – Moments b/w Gerry Read’s Nostalgic Mix – 10″ Vinyl
We are proud to be dropping a first physical release here at Live Ones in the form of a hand numbered, hand stamped 10” vinyl. No digital and limited to 300 units. We’re not big into hype here but we are chuffed with the product… Lorca – Handling the production duties on the A side. He’s recently made the move from South West London down to Brighton and has been solidifying his name under his latest moniker (Lorca). This move has seen him play alongside the likes of James Blake, Joy Orbison, Ramadanman, XXXY to name but a few. Lorca’s sound is becoming more and more distinct, whether he’s built the track by the sea or on his London house boat you can be sure there will be a big bass wave to ride. Gerry Read – Taking care of the B side. Mr Read has also been gathering speed and stripes within the Bass scene, having just penned a contract with 2nd Drop Records. His physical releases are already getting spins from the likes of Giles Petterson on the BBC , MJ Cole, Untold plus more. He really has become a sound to be reckoned with. Read moved from the UK to a suburban post code in Australia and found little else to do except immerse himself in music. Wether he was making music or listening to old Jungle tapes his Australian sojourn has, in no small way helped to shape his sound and prepare him for his return to the UK. He’s now banging out sets alongside Deep Space Orchestra, Eliphino, Szare and the rest. A side /// Lorca /// Moments – A unique track that really tests the sound systems. It’s fuelled by the heavy bass and drums, layered with a hypnotic vocal which flows over the soundscape with ease. Suitable for all sorts of sets from House to Dubstep beats or Balearic. B side /// Gerry Read /// Nostalgic Mix – Read flips the vibe of the A side on its head. He creates a darker sparser production with this Garage inspired track, chopping up the vocal to form a nostalgic 2 steppy back drop. His reincarnation takes a different route but you still end up at the dance floor. Early morning business.

IME028 – Hodge – The Fall / Crush – 12″ Vinyl
Continuing the exploration of Bristol 4/4 variants, Immerse proudly offers forth this decisive two-tracker from the prodigious mind of Jacob Martin, better know as Hodge. You might be more familiar with Hodge from his work as part of Outboxx, who we proudly debuted on ime025. That said, he first surfaced last year with the deadly ‘Conjecture’ on another fine Bristol institution, Pollen. One thing rings true in any of the output Hodge is associated with; melody. Shirking the safety of sterile mechanics that so many producers hide behind, he tackles interplaying notes and harmonies with a fearless exuberance. Opening track ‘The Fall’ kicks off on a jerky groove and ice-cold organ murmurs, gently easing in layers and clips of sound with the same joie de vivre as Akufen and other micro-house progenitors. ‘Crush’ kicks off on a more decidedly broken tip, keeping the twostep shuffle slow and easy as whispers of garage skip in between the warm pads. The overriding vibe on Hodge’s EP is one of unpretentious, good times tunage.

CITRUS047 – Quadrant vs. Dabs – The Remixes – 12″ Vinyl
Citrus presents the third part of the remixes series. After the HUGE succes of the SICKNESS remix by ZERO METHOD that was at number 1 at the Beatport drum’n bass charts and the second part by Subsonik we now move on to the third part. This part sees Quadrant and Dabs remixing eachothers favourite tracks. Only Mortal is the first Quadrant release on CITRUS028 which was a big underground neuro hit back in 2007. The epic intro of the original is the main theme of the song and now with an even more emotional vibe. The great editing of beats and stabs by DABS makes this another neuro stomper that fits well into the 2011 sound. The original of Crawler by DABS is a digital only release on Citrus in 2009. The original holds a crazy neuro bassline and furious stepping beats making it a fast paced tune. For the remix however QUADRANT completely stripped the original and turned it into a minimalistic roller! Great touch of the original edits which are there and completely rebuild. A subtle tune for the serious beats lovers.

UNION004 – Switch Technique / Deathmachine – The Storyteller / In The Dark – 12″ Vinyl
Here it goes, brand new release on Union Recordings. After successful past releases label is not giving a rest and brings another piece of highly energetic and heavy oriented music. Side A brings You techstep which reminds of older times in that subgenre, flowing vibe, strong kicks and snares, deep and catchy bassline. Switch Technique’s didn’t forget to add his trademarks to the atmosphere which results in epic aria and spacious dark sfx along with vocals which are excellent  complementing of the whole work. That track was played on the events for more than a year now and didn’t lose anything from its flavor and freshness. It’s definitely track that will wake up every dancefloor and won’t let people left it. Flip it over for another crossbreed anthem from unexpected duo Switch Technique and Deathmachine. After their own single releases on Genosha175, they decided to combine their styles on one serious track as we call it. ‘In The Dark’ is definitely one of the hardest and darkest hybrid track You will ever heard. Along with hypnotic distortion kicks and highly addictive synth lines,  this one drags You into uncontrolled excitement and unsettling that makes You feel chased by some of the darkest sides of Your own mind. Again, Deathmachine and Switch Technique’s quality  resulted in something what we can’t deny – absolute dancefloor devastation! UNION004 is also official UNIONLP001 Album Sampler which gives really small piece of what is to come on awaited Switch Technique album ALTERED which due out 11.11.11.

After over 10 years out of press, very limited Vinyl re-pressing of the he extremely sort after DJ Assassin ‘A Face in The Crowd’ 12” on Cross Section Records. Supported for years by: Craig Richards, Villalobos, Mike Huckaby, DJ Sneak, Phil Weeks, Hector Morales, Monoman, DJ Mes, Chris Cutter, Cedric Maison, Marco Faraone, Boris Werner, to name a few.

IME027 – El Kid – Le Corbusier / 112 – 12″ Vinyl
The latest Immerse cut sees the label tapping once again into the fertile waters of haunting, leftfield 4/4, showcasing the hitherto unknown talents of El Kid. The eagle-eared out there may have picked up on the Young Echo radio show, which features Sam Kidel (to his folks) alongside West-country compatriots Kahn, Vessel and Zhou showcasing their new tracks and mixes. For most though, this will be the first they hear of the Bristol-born, Brighton-based producer. On both tracks the synthetic sheen of Detroit techno gets refigured into an almost downtempo kind of house music. The melody is king, whatever sonic texture it might manifest in, leaving you with ample layers to get engrossed in. That same quintessential yearning quality ensures that these first offerings from El Kid fit perfectly into the Immerse canon. It’ll shake the right kind of dancefloor, but it’ll also tug at the right kind of heart-strings as well.

RED007 – ΔΔ – Sportex – 12″ Vinyl
Red007 sees Pushing Red taking a slightly different turn with more of a ‘juke’ style release. (Greek – known as Dimitri) buckles down with a with what could be called as a fusion of juke, ghetto house & footwork to outstanding results. The sharp 808 kicks and bassline pulsate throughout the tune while a sharp vocal sample cuts through giving the tune that much more punch! Flip over for the wonderful Ikonika remix. Ikonika has really taken this tune and given it her own feel and appeal. Turning the stormer into more of a halftime/ house feel, it’s hard to put to words the outcome. It’s ferocious & melodic and all wrapped up with that signature Ikonika feel! One you just have to hear!

GREC015RV – Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs – TEED Remix 12’’ – 12″ Vinyl
TEED’s sound swings between overt musicality and scarily on-point dance floor intuition, tearing up gigs around the globe with his live show of bizarre instruments, glitter cannons and of course… dancing dinosaurs. Beautiful blip and blop intro, touching vocals, and scathing drum beat break is the makeup of Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaur’s track, Household Goods. This is seriously good remix EP Featuring mixes from Justin Martin, Lone & 2 Bears. DJ support from Erol Alkan, Annie Mac & Tayo.

MEDI048 – Goth-Trad – Babylon Fall EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2

Also signed by Wheel & Deal, Dismantle brings a quality E.P. to the biscuit. Hailed by the likes of Skream, Benga, N-Type, Walsh, Chef and Hatcha, Dismantle is one to look out for. OTE015 – Hatti Vatti Feat Echo Ranks – Great – 12″ Vinyl
You might know Hatti Vatti from an outstanding piece of music “Different Music” written for Mindset back in 2009. A soulful Dubstep, Techno fusion that many will remember in the years to come as a great record. Now Polish born Hatti Vatti gives us a sneak peak on his debut recording for On The Edge, expected release April 2011. Another Dubstep, Techno fusion featuring vocals from Echo Ranks. Then, as if the original wasn’t enough to wet your ear drums, the legend that is Andy Stott is on remix duties! He hasn’t gone as industrial as some of his previous productions you might have heard, but still seriously Dub Techno and I for one have been playing the remix to death. All together a great (no pun intended) package!

BR001 – Ad Bourke – Tidal Motion – 12″ Vinyl
Jack Hamill (aka Space Dimension Controller) has landed gracefully in the electronic music world, leaving a two-year-long trail of astral funk in his wake. Creating grooves that were once described as “slow jamz for android porn” by Boomkat, SDC’s EPs on Royal Oak and R&S led to all-out cosmic seduction around the universe. Covering each release with intergalactic artwork he creates himself, his music is just as transportive and cinematic as the detailed sci-fi backstory (which he also writes himself) that comes with each one of his records. With the Belfast native’s music history lying deep in the catalogues of Tyron Brunson, Egyptian Lover, Aphex Twin and Boards of Canada, Hamill will be kick-starting his own record label, Basic Rhythm, this Autumn. Basic Rhythm’s first release comes from Italian space-funk producer AD Bourke, giving a hint of what’s to come with the imprint. Over the last handful of years, AD Bourke has started to introduce himself as a producer who blends the emotions of soul and funk in a futuristic key. Born and bred in Rome with an English father, his influences take shape every which way: soul to jazz, funk, house, electro and old 7 inches. First landing a beat-tape EP on Domu’s Treble O Records in 2008, by Winter 2010, Bourke had landed in London in more ways than one, being accepted into the Red Bull Music Academy while simultaneously releasing an EP (under the name of Mirage) on Citinite. On ‘Tidal Motion,’ Bourke’s sound is let loose with lush instrumentation and deep atmospheric grooves. Described by Bourke as being “heavily influenced by a three months voyage on the sea,” the EP is floaty and buoyant; analogue joyrides through a sea in outerspace. Basslines tiptoe on cosmicxylophones, melodies twinkle with the glow of the stars, and as he says himself: “It’s the sea, in all his expressions: stormy, calm, black, limpid.” Opener ‘En Trance’ builds an epic underwater funk odyssey, packed to the brim with otherworldly effects and sounds. ‘Aquarius Rising’ is a bouncing playground of smooth synth lines and intertwining melodies, while B-side ‘Cecaelia’ is a slow turning ebb and flow of synth swells, kept in motion by a hand-clapping beat. ‘32’ has the step and bass riffs of an old funk classic, but it winds around padded layers of harmony, teasing in vocal snippets and flutes that float between tambourines. An EP that surprises more with each listen.

DEEPD002 – Kromestar – Colourful Vibrations Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl
The Wait is finally over people, the 2nd and last sampler from the highly successful album “Colourful Vibrations” from Kromestar is finally here on Vinyl! The sounds Kromestar has created for the album is not dissimilar to the type of atmosphere he executed so well for “My Sound”. Loads of pads and swirls, rich basslines, flutes and well thought out samples to match. It does sound a lot more polished though and the production has come a long way since the debut. He is an absolute master of his mix down’s, each sound on the frequency spectrum has space to breath and enter your ear with ease. Every track well rounded, offering crisp, clean production through out. “Colourful Vibrations” has a variety of moods within, but the main focus is Kromestar’s genius ability to create ambient, soulful Dubstep. There are a few more banging tunes on the album as you would expect from Kromestar, but no pointless wobble what so ever! Overall a stunning album that will go down in Kromestar history!

IBR008 – Cardopusher – Goldo State EP – 12″ Vinyl
What would happen if Dâm-Funk and Boddika raised a child together, who would later go to school with Krystal Klear and Ossie, finally ending up working behind the counter of a vinyl record store with Addison Groove and Ed DMX? Fans of Venezuelan born and Barcelona based Cardopusher shouldn’t be very surprised to find out that the bass chameleon has changed colors once again, this time channelling the powerful influence of the widely-respected Rephlex label (namely the work of Aphex Twin, DMX Krew, Luke Vibert and Astrobotnia) to create the full-on electro flavored retro-rumpshaker that is ‘Goldo State EP’. Cardopusher harnesses the raw power of historic analog drum machines like the Roland TR-707 and 606 to create an acid-laden hardcore trip through 80′s groove territory, complete with the indispensable bass punch and catchy melodic synth work. “Goldo” kicks off on the A side with a might dose of 707 drum attitude and melodies that are guaranteed to make seasoned ravers smile, complete with the gut-shaking bass stabs that just beg to be heard on a loud soundsystem. On the flip side we can find “We Run This State” and “Body Slam”, two tracks that take us further into 80′s territory, placing the listener inside of the hedonistic mindset of those long-gone hardcore warehouse parties. Being the true explorer of the globalized bass phenomenon that he is, Cardopusher delivers a worthy follow up to his latest album ‘Yr Fifteen Minutes Are Up’, released by Tigerbeat6, as well as the latin madness of “Tu Bizcochito”, released by Enchufada as part of their successful ‘Hard Ass Sessions’ series. File Iberian Records’ ‘Goldo State EP’ next to the likes of Addison Groove and Ed DMX.” Early support by: Kode9, Chrissy Murderbot, Octa Push, Slackk, Funkineven, Ikonika, Photonz, Bass Clef, Pocz & Pacheko, Munchi, Atki2, Juakali

RWINA014 – Krampfhaft – Makin’ Magic EP – 12″ Vinyl
The newest release on Rwina comes from Krampfhaft from the label’s homeland of the Netherlands. With only two releases on Hamburg label Saturate to his name, Krampfhaft Rwina debut marks his highest profile release to date, and the Makin’ Magic EP is appropriately, well, big. The Utrecht producer has a synth-heavy sound that’s defined more by its impeccable polish and spacious echo chambers than the kind of ultra-compressed grime pyrotechnics or the filigree rhythm programming for the agile rollers proffered by Rwina recently, but the four tracks here retain the sense of colourful mischief that remains Rwina’s calling card. Makin’ Magic figures Kramphaft somewhere in between high-tempo hijinks and plastic soul future garage. ‘I Needed You’ and ‘Carl Sagan The Man’ both run at tempos far beyond even the fastest of dubstep variations. ‘I Needed You’ sends stuttering rimshots careening across the horizon, as Krampfhaft layers his whining synths that alternate between shrieks and shudders, as if every so often he’s sticking a rod in between the blindingly fast spokes. ‘Carl Sagan The Man’ explicitly recalls footwork with its slam-and-stop percussive attack and hypnotically winding vocal loops, but it’s again saturated with those hyperventilating synths that take the sometimes-apocalyptic feel of tracks by Spinn and Rashad and turns it into a level of alarm and hysteria that approaches the cartoonish. The lower tempo tracks are more familiar concoctions: ‘Hyper Dreaming’ is a rather pastel take on the kind of garage and 2step mutations you could expect coming out of producers like Roof Light or Jack Dixon, it has this rather muscular and swung beat with futuristic synth strokes which garners a guaranteed reaction on any dancefloor. The EP closes with its title track, a histrionic ballad full of heartsick synths and chords that swoon dangerously low before swooping back up, leaving behind resplendent trails of melody, and the boasting vocal sample, drenched in reverb, is elevated to near-religious proclamation amidst all the aural drama. It’s an appropriately auspicious release for a Rwina debut, and marks an exciting and sufficiently weirdo addition to an already wonderfully dysfunctional family.
DJ support: The Gaslamp Killer, Daedelus, Starkey, Machinedrum, Kuedo/Jamie Vex’d, Mary Anne Hobbs, Slugabed, Om Unit, Lorn, EPROM, Taz, Distal, DJ Spinn, Diplo and many more.

Calibre presents “Condition” LP [Signature]

Posted 15 September 2011 | By | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

It’s that time again where we proudly announce a brand new Calibre LP, due for release on 3rd October 2011. It’s at this point that we usually hand it over to Calibre himself to briefly introduce the album in his own words….

Condition is my drum and bass follow up to “Even If”, I originally wanted to make an album that was more dance floor influenced, to have a more light hearted approach, in some ways it has that, but I couldn’t stop myself from making the deeper material, for years i have wrestled with the subtle side of drum and bass, my journey has been one that tries to attain the simple groove, to keep removing the layers of this music, this album is an expression of this, and how im still feeling the underdog waiting for the cycle……. it came about as it always has and thats the way its supposed to, enjoyable and moving fast to discover the stillness.

New D&B Releases

CRIT057EP – Enei – Stonehead EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Oh. My. Gosh. Critical come to conquer with this absolutely dangerous 4-tracker courtesy of Russia’s Enei; a name becoming more familiar by the day as one of the most talented and most exciting new school producers in the game. Snapped up by the ever on point label master Kasra, this EP only makes the prospect of the debut Enei album even more tantalizing. The title track ‘Stone Head’ is a bulldozer of a tune that comes complete with the Andy C seal of approval. A stepper’s paradise with rich kicks and a body-slamming, rolling b-line that’ll send shockwaves through any club. Serious is an understatement! Next up Enei hooks up with vocalist Riya for a proper techy bounder ‘No Fear’ with its undulating bassline that bounces hard taking no prisoners as it moves. The wrecking-ball of the bunch. Moving on and the mood changes slightly to the more flowing sounds of ‘Movin’ Fast’; a naughty, gnarly slice of heavyweight D&B with large feedback-infused bass and sick amen edits that keeps things lively. Wait for the breakdown and switch up though for the killer blow! Then finishing things off in fine style is the heavily hammered Jubei remix of Enei, Eastcolors & Noel’s hit from earlier in the year ‘Cracker’. Keeping the seedy original vibe alive, Jubei goes in deep and comes out the other side with another tough slab of speaker freaker bass and beats. Awesome.

SYMM008 – Break / Villem – Something New / Do You I Wanna – 12″ Vinyl
After the critically acclaimed release of ‘Slow Down VIP’, Break quickly returns with Symmetry’s 8th release. On the A-side, Break lead’s the way, stripping it back with ‘Something New’. This track is a definite head-nodder that retains the classic Break heavy -bass manipulation! Villem aka Andrew Wilson heads up the highly anticipated flip side with ‘Do You Wanna, I Wanna’. Also a key member to Utopia Music, Villem has DJ support from the likes of LTJ Bukem, Doc Scott, Bailey, Martyn and many more. He’s a man of many talents and is also one half of production duo Mute, who are often seen collaborating with rapidly rising Bristol producer Mako. This fantastic AA side completely captures the Symmetry vibe with a quintessentially liquid piano and vocal combination moving into some untouchable percussion. With growing DJ support across the board, Villem is definitely a name to look out for this year.

PFM and Formula One’s take on the flip is even dreamier, where they have collaborated together a piece of deep vocal music.  ”If You Were Mine” features vocals which indulge an airy dream of love, peace, and romance.

DRUNK024 – Ekoplekz – Intrusive Incidentalz Vol 1 – 12″ Vinyl
Following critically acclaimed releases with Mordant Music and Further Records earlier this year, Ekoplekz delivers his first album for Punch Drunk. Dispensing entirely with notions of accessibility and dancefloor friendliness, ‘Intrusive Incidentalz vol.1′ is a 12 track collection of dark, oppressive atmospheres and violently unstable interludes, developed through studio improvisation and inspired by childhood memories of terrifying electronic soundtrack music from the 1970s, yet combined with a post-dubstep sensibility and a sense of dread informed by the social, economic and political climate of life in 2011. A bleak retro-futurist fantasy, or oblique soundtrack for a broken Britain? The truth probably lies somewhere between the two.

BOKA036 – Crushington & Optimus Gryme – Hangman / Voodoo Skank – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo’s. Purveyors of maximal minimalism in bass music, Crushington explore the mid-tempo soundworld of dubstep. Inspired to step outside of their box by a face-melting New Years Eve performance from Skream and Benga, for the last two years, Crushington have sonically sculpted their own, well-received take on dubstep. Lacking a developed knowledge of the genre, their unaffected explorations into different tempos and grooves have caught ears everywhere, leading to DJ support from N-Type, Jakes, Emalkay, Distance, Seven, Truth, Bulletproof, Datsick, Excision, Hatcha and Headhunter. Along the way, they’ve collaborated with, or remixed for Black Sun Empire, SPL, Truth, Optimus Gryme and Bulletproof. With high profile support and collaborations boiling over left right and centre and several boutique vinyl releases to their credit, DJ bookings across New Zealand and Australia have come quickly and to lauded receptions. Old school producers and DJs from the era of vinyl and “by ear” engineering, their sonic fidelity has seen their Crushington tunes described by the likes of Antiserum as the perfect studio mixdown reference. To put it in simpler terms, Crushington’s subwoofer rupturing arrangements are fast becoming a standard setter with in the international dubstep community, where things go next from here though; only time will tell.

SUBWAYDS005 – 501 – Gist / Borderline – 12″ Vinyl
Its been a long wait but finally 501 returns with yet another bigtime 12inch that will roll out punches even more than Mike Tyson! Fresh off his release from Never Say Die sees 501 twisting it differently this time.. Gist is a vocal infused stomper that opens the 12inch perfectly and sees 501 leaning into a swagger tip. It flows, it rocks, it jumps its everything in 1. It shows a different side to the standard 501 sound and shows he can bend any way he’d like to. You can hear that in the B side ‘Borderline’ where he exchanges the sweet vocals of Gist for a psychotic quote and the swagger lean for some ear shattering kicks & snares. Hear Borderline destroy your eardrums like the good old days with some SUB! Nothing beats the old fashioned heavyweight sound! Another essential 501 record!

New D&B Releases

APEXX002 – Taktix – It’s The Way (2010 Refix) / It’s The Way (Serum Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
After the massive impact of Harvest’s dance floor destroyer ‘Militant’ Apexx Recordings proudly returns with our second release and we have pulled out all the stops for this one. Dj Taktix’s needs no introduction and neither does ‘It’s The Way’ first come out in 1994 and the remix featuring Top Buzz’s Mad P vocal is a benchmark tune to say the least. Taktix returns after a large break from the scene and comes with a remix with afresh new angle, rather than your typical junglist approach he gives it a dark more twisted vibe, metallic beats, dirty amen and still keeping the vocal gives ‘It’s The Way’ a fresh new vibe. Serum remix on the other hand is exactly what you expect from this highly rated producer and he brings it right up to 2010 with all the attributes there from the original and this remix has caused a storm. Been on dubplate for a while now and still getting airplay on all major radio stations this has had massive support from the likes of Andy C, Bryan Gee, Dj Marky, Nicky Blackmarket, Crissy Criss, Bailey and that’s just a few……. Also Watch out for forthcoming track from Dj Devize ‘Build N Destroy’ massive support from Dj’s Hazard, Marky, Brockie, Nicky Blackmarket & more.

SUBTITLESUK009 – Fracture & Mark System – Yeah, But… – 12″ Vinyl
Fracture & Mark System, clearly understanding the fundamental elements Drum with Bass music. Their debut release for Subtitles is utterly compulsive, creating a vibe that’s full of bruising technoid fear, whilst brilliantly funky. On the flip side Closed Circuit’s groove is laid back, while moody beats steadily increase the pressure. Produced to perfection with the emphasis on the funk and groove. As Shy FX said It’s music from the heart. It’s not writing beats to sell units, it’s for the love of it”

Citrus presents the second part of the remixes series. The A1 holds the Subsonik remix of the BLACK SUN EMPIRE classic CRASH BUNNY on Citrus024. Subsonik understands the sound of the original perfectly well and turns the neuro tech-step roller into an epic work, completely with new arranged intro with an emotional twist and big Neuro dnb basslines. Rrrrolling! On the flip we find the Subsonik remix of Citrus favourite ‘Rage and Rapture’ by Quadrant which featured on Citrus029. After the already well received remix by ‘State of Mind’ on the Quadrant EP we now have another addition to the series. The latest highly anticipated release from the USA based Ammunition Recordings features tracks from Jade & Mastif, plus Engage on the flip. Jade & Mastif and start proceedings with Hyperion.Featuring a unique stuttering beginning, this track blossoms into a fully fledged roller. An energetic, synergy of the slick production from Hungarian veteran Jade, and the creative input of Mastif, this is sure to keep the dance-floor hyper. The other side of this release features Overbreaker by Engage.  Hailing from Russia, Engage has caused a stir in the Drum and Bass scene, with support including artists such as Noisia, Ed Rush and Concord Dawn.  This track goes some way to explain why. Apple Pips are very proud to present 2 emotive slices of bass-led dancefloor funk from another hugely talented Bristol based producer – Arkist. His reputation has been building this year, with a gorgeous melodic edge to his futuristic beats, and a unique sense of space and rhythm. Having heard his sound develop over the last year it’s a real pleasure to present 2 tracks which have been on constant rotation round here, and out in the clubs we play in… ’Rendezvous’ clashes classic 2-step garage vibes with amazing melancholy synth work to create a future bass steppa that gets an amazing response every time it is dropped… ’Fill your Coffee’ comes with a lo-slung funked out twist, culminating in a rushy pad breakdown that just sounds incredible on a big system believe me! With gigs at Fabric & two American tours under his belt, & a killer 12” with Kidkut coming on Hotflush, Arkist is poised for great things in 2011. The kick off for this unique vinyl series is by Basque County native Kastil who sets the right tone with three wonderful Disco edits at a mid-tempo / slomo pace. Since uploading these tracks to his SoundCloud page, the feedback has been enormous. Side A contains the long, slow and loopy ‘Back to Philadelphia’, where Kastil cleverly plays with the vocals and delay and creates a highly tense build up. There’s no doubt that some large players in the very popular Disco edit culture will play this one out. On the B1 side you find the track ‘SMD’. A track which received great feedback by some key figures on SoundCloud. This track is the ultimate pre-lude for the summer. Fortunately, this is being released just early enough to enjoy this during the European and Northern American summer. With again beautiful vocals floating through the track, this track definitely reminds one of a hot day in the local park. The B2 track is called ‘Rolls Royce’. Perfect as the last track of this release since it’s a long edit which ends with a very atmospheric piano solo that keeps on floating through the last few minutes of the track. All and all, these edits will definitely make some heads turn after the date of release. Supported by: Cosmic Boogie, Dicky Trisco, The Legendary 1979 Orchestra, Sleazy Beats Recordings, Ben La Desh, 78 Edits, Osvaldo Wilson, Mannmademusic, Gitchell Moore

PSQ006 – AnD – Algorythmic Love EP – 12″ Vinyl
AnD are a duo living in Manchester, UK. They’ve released a split 12” with 16 Bit on Mindset in 2009, the second 12” on Black Sun Records that came out recently and a couple of 12“s on Horizontal Ground. They sent me various batches of tracks spanning a wide range of sounds, all rooted in Techno to my ears but spanning different tempos, emphasis and mood. I selected three of those tracks to appear on this EP, ranging between 130 and 135 BPM. “Algorythmic Love” is probably the most dancefloor orientated of the three. A percussive monster with a huge kick drum, but that doesn’t work around the 4/4 template. The lush chords that creep in towards the end of the tune bring out a depth that’s alluded to but never revealed fully in the first half. “Brother From Another Mother” feels a lot slower but is around the same speed. The drums are staccato and restrained with perfect placement of hits around some ethereal delay heavy melody and huge bass. “Swing Me” refocuses on the dancefloor but rather than using prominent drums to that end it employs twisting synth melodies to generate pace and energy. Tom Dicicco is a Techno producer also based in Manchester. When AnD told me that they knew him and that he’d be up for doing a remix I jumped at the chance; Tom’s first 12” on Baud and his track on Jonas Kopp’s “Music From The Basement” compilation blew me away. His “Late Night Dub” of “Brother From Another Mother” turns the tune into a 124 BPM Techno track, powered by some very prominent Hi Hat work and laced with beautiful delay riddled melody. To me it sounds like a fusion of Dub Techno and House, complimenting the original tracks on the EP perfectly. Mastered by Matt at Air Studios London.

CIV024 – Drums of Death – Black Waves EP – 12″ Vinyl
Black Waves is 4 tracks of deep, dark club music. Since the release of his critically acclaimed album “Generation Hexed”, Drums of Death has been obsessively developing a deeper and darker sound that is tailored for the dance-floor. Black Waves fuses frantic 808 drum patterns and dramatic synth lines with fresh, contemplative melodies. It’s music born out of its maker’s passion for techno and house. Black Waves opens with “Cold Lazarus” an intense 4 minute ride of classic techno taken to its intenseconclusion. Strings derived from his raucous live show build tension before the track spirals out ofcontrol descending into a frenzied, audio assault. Further high-end club tendencies are delivered on “I Can’t Take It”. Drenched with early 90’s rave influence, it’s house music looking forward at 135 beats per minute. Urgent soul vocals, torn apart and carried along by rattling snares. ”Lost Highway” is melodic with a deep London sound. It’s emotive synths mix with rolling toms and pitched vocal shards. Still designed for the club it shows a more considered side to the Drums of Death sound. A subtlety that is also present in the romantic, emotional flourishes of closing track “Love’s Labour’s Lost”. Here arpeggiated synths build while chords and strings mix with clarinets and heavysubs to make an almost baroque 2-step hybrid. Drums Of Death is the alter-ego of Colin Bailey and as his renowned and energetic live performances go from strength to strength and take him round the world he has continually exceeded all expectations.Drums of Death emerged from London’s club scene in early 2008 and signed to Joe Goddard from Hot Chip’s record label and party crew, Greco-Roman. He released a series of sold out 12″s that preceded his universally applauded debut album “Generation Hexed”. Tours with Peaches & Hot Chip, remixes for Drop The Lime, Tricky, Kele, Franz Ferdinand, Fenech-Soler, Steve Mason, Hot Chip and more. Co-writingthe title track of Peaches’ album “I Feel Cream”. Regularly delivering diverse mixes for RA, Clash, XLRecordings and for radio shows around the world. Curating stages at one festival and headlining the next, sessions for BBC Introducing, being nominated DJ Mag’s “Breakthrough producer of the year”, twice featuring in Dazed & Confused’s “Greatest Electronic Songs of the Decade” and gracing the cover of IDJ. That has been the Drums of Death story so far……………………. but voodoo, hype and face paint aside, Black Waves showcases a producer moving forward. For Drums of Death it’s the beginning of something new.

PFND002 – Rob Sparx – Walk On / Walk On (PropaTingz Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Profound Audio follows up their debut release with this absolutely smashing single from heavyweights, Rob Sparx and PropaTingz. Covering both ends of the spectrum from the original to its epic remix, ‘Walk On’ has been making waves across the globe and is finally available to the masses. Guaranteed to mash up the dance, this is a must-have record for 2011! A. Rob Sparx – Walk On – Rob Sparx’s original mix kicks off with a funky 2-Step riddim, layered with soulful guitar licks, penetrating synths and some extra deep bass to get you moving. The tune progresses into a super-funky, filtered disco beat leading into a high-energy buildup that will have any crowd going nuts. The drop combines beautiful haunting vocals, brain-rattling bass and sexy synth stabs in a ‘purple’ fashion that has already made an impact on dancefloors worldwide. Not to be taken lightly, this one’s a heavy-hitter and still maintains its class! AA. Rob Sparx – Walk On (PropaTingz Remix) – Doing what he does best, badman PropaTingz comes extra hard with this slamming remix, completely flipping the original tune into a crushing dancefloor anthem. The remix starts with an eerie atmospheric intro of arpeggiating strings, lush pads and a glitched-out take on the original vocal, wasting no time in taking you to the build-up. The drop is absolutely insane, hitting you in the face with a switch-up of extra fat half-time and double-time drums and a west coast G-funk lead all sitting under PropaTingz’s disgusting signature basslines. A prime-time dancefloor smasher – handle with caution!

MEDI045 – Cyrus – Visions – 12″ Vinyl
Cyrus is a true pioneer and veteran of the Dubstep scene and has been around since its inception releasing various singles from as far back as 2004 on Pinch’s Tectonic label, Southside Dubstars, Distance’s mighty Chestplate label and of course his own imprint Random Trio Productions under Random Trio and Cyrus. Cyrus’s album ‘From The Shadow’s’ on Tectonic released in 2007 was one of the first Dubstep long players and featured stone cold Dubstep minimal classic ‘Indian Stomp’ which was also picked up and featured in hit Hollywood movie ‘Children of Men’ alongside Digital Mystikz and Kode9. Cyrus’s brutally minimalistic, hypnotic and cavernous sound runs throughout all his productions and is beautifully captured on his second release for Mala’s DEEP MEDi Musik with the forthcoming tracks “Vision” and “The Calling”.

DUFFDISCO006 – Duff Disco – Grand Master Duff / Slow – 12″ Vinyl
Blue skies and late nights, camp fires and cheap delights and whisky drained straight from the jar. In a hammock slung below a sky of dreams and sea of stars lay a pop princess and a hip hop pioneer, arms entwined and eyes locked into each other’s stare they whisper sweet –nothings to each other, “You’re flash” he says “take it slow” she purrs back “and don’t even don’t think about going down under!” A mile or two out to sea, floats what has come to be known as a mega-yacht. Aboard his life like an episode of MTV Cribs but with more parties and less gold-encrusted pool tables. Surrounded by beauties by the bevy and sipping on gin and juice, Duff scans the horizon with his telescope (solid platinum, encrusted with diamonds, built in infa red) and spies young love or a new hope. Smiling to himself he thinks “they look different, younger perhaps at least changed, if not for the better but changed at least which is surely a good thing”. He turns to the girls on the boat, one hand pointing to the shore and the other raising his drink to the sky he shouts “I helped create that”

3024015 – Instra:mental / Trevino – Pyramid / Chip – 12″ Vinyl
Fresh from the pleasures of introducing Jon Convex to the world, 3024 heads off on a pair of tangents for the next project. The 14th release marks the label’s first split 12″ – a result of 2 tracks falling in to their collective lap that were too good to wait for individual releases. Despite the 2 very different acts involved, the symmetry in both musical background and production methodology makes for a record as coherent as any in the label’s back catalogue, with both artists closely linked to both 3024 and Martyn’s career. Filling up the first side is the ever-evolving four-legged analogue Hoover that is Instra:mental, with a raucous victory lap following on from their widely acclaimed ‘Revolution 653’ album, and the two members’ warmly received solo endeavors as Boddika (aka Alex Green) and Jon Convex (aka Damon Kirkham). Less an example of the icy metallic Instra:mental sound showcased on their debut long player and more a collaboration between the combined talents of their respective monikers, ‘Pyramid’ takes the Decepticon strut of Green’s solo work and grafts it seamlessly to the EBM aesthetic of the initial wave of ‘Convexations,’ to form an undulating monster of sub-low Atari evoking murk and swing. The flip-side is home to the debut work of the new alias from a DJ/producer who’s integral to 3024′s formation, an artist as at home on the golf course as he has been at raves throughout the last few decades. In contrast to the deliberate pulse of ‘Pyramid’, the man no one knows as Trevino introduces himself to the wider world with ‘Chip.’ An urgently paced update of the cybernetic warehouse sound beloved of Northern England at the turn of the 90′s, ‘Chip’ is instantly evocative of the finest early Warp releases in both its floor friendliness and cunning melodic turns. The increasingly talked about Erosie takes time out from some soon-to-be-revealed new projects, and graces 3024-015 with another sleeve in his resiliently inimitable style.

This track really brings out Rum’s penchant for amazing strings once again as he drifts them in gently towards the later half of the track, creating further layers of lush melodic bliss. The illustrator on this release is the incredibly talented Matt Taylor from Brighton. We instantly fell in love with his furry and feathery skulls, and had to have them spinning around on a record.
