Joe Seven makes his debut on Exit records with the second of the Exit 10” series of which the first featured his ‘They Live’ collaboration partner Consequence. Here we have an insight into what Joe Seven is capable of on his own and the individual contributions to the They Live project become more apparent.‘Restionaire’ First off we have the eerie ambience of ‘Restionaire’ with its glitchy and heavily swung beats layered with an underlying 4/4 kick for this slice of minimal techno. Pads and melodies creep in and out amongst distorted sound effects and electric percussion that keep the vibe very extra terrestrial.‘The Cous’ offers more of a stripped back and melodic but still quite robotic sound. No doubt influenced by the legendary Kraftwerk legacy, this track has all the retro analogue qualities that make for a great piece of listening and with its catchy synth bass hook and classic drum machine beats it’s hard to resist some robo body popping.

The first Immerse release of 2011 sees the label taking on a fresh approach while retaining the same atmospherics that have made it an essential fixture in the Bristol music canon. Outboxx are made up of Jacob Martin and Matt Lambert, and their sound is rooted in groovy, analogue house music. With an emphasis on jamming, there’s a loose, live feel to these tracks that has an instant appeal but drags you deeper with each listen. ‘Kate Libby’ kicks off on a swung beat and warm pads, before dropping down to P-funk bass and sparse synth flourishes. ‘Bertie’s Groove’ places jazzy Rhodes playing at the front of the mix with a classic drum machine workout ticking away in the background. This is soulful, authentic house music with not a clinical MIDI pattern in earshot. Despite coming from a different angle, the Outboxx tracks slip neatly into the Immerse legacy thus far, pointing the way for a year filled with more of the spacious, haunting club music the label has become renowned for.

Kyle Schab, aka Dubtek, has been an instrumental player in bringing the dubstep sound to the Seattle underground for the last five years.  As part of the Shift Crew, Dubtek’s been pushing the dubstep sound since the mid ’00′s, first as a producer and later as a DJ.  In each role, he’s seen critical and popular acclaim as his releases have been featured on a host of cutting edge dubstep labels including Shift Recordings, Trust in Music, Terminal Dusk, and Paradise Lost and has had his tunes supported by a who’s who of dubstep players including Triage, Droid Sector, Matta, and Boot.  In addition he’s become a Seattle fan favorite with an ear for the underground and a big bass sound, as he’s shared billing with a host of dubstep elite including N-Type, Caspa, 12th Planet, Babylon System, and SPL to name a few. On his inaugural release for Vicious Audio Dubtek stays true to his roots, creating deep bass soundscapes with a heavy sound while managing to stay intelligent and away from anything that could be described as ‘bro’.  Fever plods along through the night, as light siren stabs and ghostly ambience create a sense of space between the kick-snare attacks and the beastly bass line. On The Tennant, things start off harmlessly enough but get decidedly darker as a heavy, chugging bass line pounds along at a steady clip.

NS007 The Velvet Connection – Velour Night Slugs 12″ Vinyl
The latest Night Slugs signing is steeped in mystery – a new project from two big producers (from the House and Dubstep scenes respectively) known only as Velour. “The Velvet Collection” is a concept EP of four subtle variations on a distinct theme: sleazy, luminescent, synth-soaked cosmic boogie infused with functionalist 808s. The EP is as much futuristic dance/sex music as it is an homage to iconic Roland hardware of the 80s. Opening track “Booty Slammer” announces Velour’s intentions right from the intro, before its longing chords give way to cavernously low booming 808 sub bass. Bittersweet as it is seductive, the track rolls in half- time, punctuated by a vocal refrain: “inside of me”. Very sensual! “The Scent Of Romance” and “Kick It Till It Breaks” both adapt the kind of jackin’ drums favoured by the Dirty Bird crew while Velour’s distinctive vintage synth work elevates them to the celestial realm. Both tracks work as spectacular tech-house centerpieces, but with enough low-end pressure to dominate any UK soundsystem. The EP is closed by “She Wore Velour”, a theme song for the project, which refigures the record’s sound palette into something more direct, driving and up-front. Arpeggiated twinkles and “Ripe Banana”-like pitch-bent beams of synth atop a massive diving sub are eventually consumed by an unforgettable chorus of keys. From the dancefloor to the boudoir, Velour is a pornographic synth odyssey on Night Slugs.

Sleazy, emotional, violent and ecstatic at the same time, Suckafish’s latest offering maintains his reputation for productions that ignite the dance with raw, infectious energy and humour. ‘Match Set Point’ sets off the proceedings in style, with it’s jerky hip hop beat propelled by apocolyptic toms and metronomic pulses. Threatening to crack apart like thunder at every turn, but holding us in its chaotic hypnosis, the track swirls its way through psychedelic arpeggios and bent, cascading vocals which remind us that, yes, ‘…the bounce is back’! The EP’s second track, ‘Wild and Dirty’, turns up the temperature; with its fractured post-dubstep beat that snaps open growling, detuned basslines and robo-funk melodics. Urgent, epic and overheated, it challenges you to drop any head-nod pretenses and start shaking like you’re possessed. ‘Bubble Farm’ offers perhaps the most jittery dancefloor-oriented offering of the EP. Combining elastic synthesis with hip swinging rhythms and tropical electronics, the track jerks us back and forth in impossible maneuvers within its fractured, low end bounce and melodic intricacy. To end, ‘The Touch’ pours out of the speakers as a solid barefoot beat carrying a wave of rich, dense analogue synths. With it’s ridiculously loose, manic LFOs, ‘The Touch’ throbs and snaps its way out of the speakers with all the swagger of a gold-tooth club classic for the post apocalyptic future.

Based upon the influence of Japanese cinema, Spor takes his production to a new level with a vocal so euphoric and magical, it will have the whole dancefloor reaching to the skies. A tumbling, rolling drum track lays the foundations to a raw midrange – the trademark Spor sound. Finishing up with an organ arrangement, Kaori will be known as one of Spor’s finest moments.
HALOGEN – Reminiscent of `1up’ from Spor’s debut EP; The Supernova EP, `Halogen’ provides the more light hearted approach to the end of the double 12”. The spotlight was significantly placed on ‘Mind Over Matter’ which even featured on Mary Anne Hobbs’ U.S tour blog, beside the likes of Chase & Status, Joker & Plactician. ‘Mind Over Matter’ was then chosen to be released on one of the most exciting and contemporary record labels to emerge from 2009, ‘Screwloose Records’ where it would join highly desired up and coming releases from the likes of KOAN Sound & Asa. Perhaps the best thing about Statix is the fact that the talent doesn’t stop at the loading screen for Reason 4.0. Word of mouth alone established Statix high on the bills of several nights in their home town of Bristol. Why? A. JAKES – SCANNERZ
With each new tune that Jakes produces, his progression and intent is evermore obvious. No fooling about with this one – a ringing loop draws you in and then hits you with a monster drop. Low-end rushing through the woofers with rhythmic swiftness, feet will be stomping the ground and writhing to this bass-led beat. The occasional bell chime and futuristic lasers shooting –here’s a tune capable of tearing down any rave, no matter what size.
AA. GIANT – DRUMSTICK VIP
Maintaining the squeaking synths and vocoder present in the original ‘Drumstick’, Giant have gone back in on this one and turned out an even funkier, wobbly b-line number than before. The atmospheric synth and ragga piano stab demonstrate a standard of production usually attributed to more experienced producers. Yet Giant have managed to create a tune that oozes serious studio skills and fresh innovative ideas at the same time. It’s not every day that a debutant’s release on a label gets offered to do a VIP, but Giant have come up trumps.

A. CHASING SHADOWS – DREAM ON
With a guitar riff building the intro, stabs of the bass set the tone of this tune at an early point. Pausing briefly for a vocal that gets turned menacing by the streaming synths placed overhead. A seriously heavy bassline follows, the kind that fills up any room with its presence. This duo is going from strength to strength – ‘Dream On’ displays their ability to fuse different styles into their music and execute the production with a skilled hand. At this early stage in their career, its clear that Chasing Shadows have a great future ahead.
AA. JAKES – BOOM BOOM BASS
There are only a handful producers in dubstep that have a style which is difficult, near on impossible, to imitate. Lucky for Hench, Jakes is one of those producers. Commencing with a vocal skit, little does the listener know that they’re being teed-up to have this driving bassline thrust upon them. Vocal stabs and a drum pattern that switches throughout the tune give this release a progressive sound. Changing things up later on, piano chords bounce and maintain the feeling of not knowing whats going to come next.
Whatever your style, whatever your flavour – we dare you to try not moving to this when it gets dropped.

We’re not trying to bring you some stuff aimed solely at fitting into ‘the scene’ – no, we like beats, bass, synths, stuff that can mess with your head as well as move your feet. So, bearing that in mind, we’re proud to present Eprom, fresh out of San Francisco. ‘Humanoid’ takes stepping beats in a Mala-gone-ATL vibe, and marries them to lazer-guided pitch-switching neon synth lines that contract and expand, breathing their way through the track and re-programming the dance floor into a blur of hypercolour. The classic vocal sample reminds us how far we’ve come from the days of Acid House, yet how much remains the same – people still want to hear amazing noises put together in a way that makes them dance. ‘The Slaughter’ takes the mid-tempo West-Coast sound and runs with it – glowing synth lines harmonise like the work of acid-loving robots over swaggering beats and moody, almost RZA-esque atmospherics, building intensity throughout the track.
Finally, ‘Lick Out’ sounds like the kind of music Drexciya might have made if their underwater civilisation was based around the Bay Area’s hyphy scene. The whole track is dripping wet, an exploration into a future world of aquatic crunk that defies categorisation. Rwina is proud, but not surprised, to note that this release is being supported by the likes of Mary Anne Hobbs, Jakes, Starkey, The Gaslamp Killer and Slugabed.

A. Avoid The Noid: From the start, the listener is propelled into the pure energy of this track. A steady 4/4 kick drum keeps the momentum along with scattered snares. A deep, bouncy bassline pull everything together in style along with twinkling keys and a nice short vocal. AA. Duality: One of our favorite tunes we’ve heard in a long time and are very proud to be releasing this. A minimal intro leads into a punchy snare that slaps you across the face while the drum fill in between keep things interesting. A huge sub bassline will keep any sound system on it’s toes. This tune is all about patience and the build up to a vocal that sits so well, it’s hard to imagine a tune around like it atm. A piece of music you just have to hear to believe!

In 2009, the release of The Jakes Project, which included anthems such as Rock Tha Bells and Warface, demonstrated Jakes’ ability to straddle genres with his aptness for innovation and style remaining intact. With his own productions receiving widespread support from as wide- ranging DJs from Skream to Crookers to Mary Anne Hobbs to Gaslamp Killer, Jakes has gone on to produce remixes that have topped download charts and he regularly receives extensive radio coverage. With this in mind, it’s no wonder that his label has a host of talented artists releasing their productions through the HENCH imprint.

Having masterfully mixed the HENCH Mixtape (Vol. 1), Jakes introduces several of his unreleased works into the label showcase. Featuring VIP’s of many of his previously released tracks; the mix offers something new even for the hardiest of HENCH fans. Providing a platform for both established artists as well as those who are less familiar amongst the scene’s heads – one of the mix’s defining accomplishments is the uniformity in standard of production.

Komonazmuk, who is currently writing his debut album that will be released on HENCH later in 2010 has also made a stunning tune to lend to the mix (You Fo’). Giant’s hugely successful Swoosh and a VIP of Drumstick, along with VIP’s of Eddie K’s debut 12” on the label also feature. Tracks from the unmistakable Chasing Shadows and Lost are dropped into the mix, which will only add to the splash that these young producers are currently creating in the music scene.

Not to be overshadowed by the more established artists, those who are new to the dubstep world truly stamp their mark on the Mixtape. Expect to take notice of HENCH’s most recent signing, Mensah – currently the talk of Bristol after having his production featured in TV Series, CSI, and having productions lined up for future releases on Jakes’ label. Tek-One has also been making a big impact, and HENCH were lucky to pick up ‘Broken String’ – surely a future classic. Young-gun producer, Minus, adds flavour to the mix with his debut release, Nails.

With exciting and genre-breaking tracks dotted throughout this compilation, the HENCH Mixtape (Vol. 1) provides an accurate snapshot of the accomplishments of Jakes and his label to date. With such established and rising stars cued to make further releases on the label, HENCH will continue to remain at the forefront at the boundary-pushing Dubstep scene.

Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Subs bulge beneath the broken 2-step riddim and occasional warping midline, building nicely towards the killer switchups on the second drop.

INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

NASCA004 Spider – Body & Soul / Fourward Nasca Records 12″ Vinyl
BODY&SOUL, best known for their productions on Viper Recordings and Bad Company, need no further introduction. FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. Their first digital releases on Subsonik Sound were all regulars at Beatport Top 10 sales chart for weeks, competing with established artists´ tracks by Chase&Status and Noisia. BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD decided to join forces just recently and the feedback on their work so far couldn’t prove any more, that this was an excellent decision. Ed Rush & Optical have already picked up two of their tunes for their mighty Virus Recordings Imprint. In the meantime we have the first Vinyl release of BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD´s mastercraft on Nasca Records.

First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. ATM001 Mako EP – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today. Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River. Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy. Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions. Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground. Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody. Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out. This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

BFT002 One Step Two – Lord Cry Cry Blunt Force Trauma 7″ Vinyl
Honking trumpets? Breasty ragga vocals and slick double-bass twangin’? A Prince Buster tune, cussing and some snooker balls? Well my good man, this can only be the next release from Blunt Force Trauma! This double dose of ska-lounge-cum-ragga-get-down is a most handsome successor to BFT’s first release. Lord Cry Cry aka Berlin- based Chris Donaghue pours every inch of his classically-trained ear for detail into this lovingly produced re-working of One Step Beyond, twinned with the rude Raw F*ck. Sweet-talking your backslide into a strange grooving action, this pair of beauties has slapped a large and toothsome grin in the face of every listener, including the likes of DJ Food, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) and Jon Kennedy. Artwork here is obsessively overseen by BFT with a cover shot by New York’s Anthony Saint James (www.anthonysaintjames.com – worth a visit for the celeb-spotting!) and a tattoo by British illustrator Inkymole, on a sleeve which opens into an 11″x16″ poster. Add blue dinked vinyl with a red 45rpm adapter by sister company Factoryroad, a download card with 7 tracks including ‘Make my P-Funk The Funk’ (a track exclusive to this format) along with Mac/PC and iPhone wallpapers and, well, you DO have a fulsome package there, sir. We’ve got unfolded versions of that sleeve here too; just ask if you want some buttocks to brighten up your boudoir.
About Lord Cry Cry: After working in a steel mill and disregarding encouragement to become a Woolworths manager Lord Cry Cry, born Chris Donaghue, studied Law at Oxford University then Clinical Psychology. He worked as a psychologist in Kent then moved to Berlin to write a novel, join a band, build a snowman, schlep coal, and collect bottles. Just because he could. He completed a Masters degree in sound design and classical music composition in Berlin this year. This is his first solo vinyl release, after providing many a musical piece for various short European films.

BOKBOK01 I Want You (Bok Bok VIP Dub) – Dre Skull Unknown 12″ Vinyl
White Label, Black sleeve. One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor.
