There was once a time in drum & bass where to try your hand at other genres was practically an insult to the staunch elitism of the genre. Drum & bass knew best, and what it knew most preciously of all was to soak up outside influences like a sponge, then regurgitate them in its own 170-ish-bpm breakbeat style – with an added middle finger to anyone who dared question the futurethinking outlook of the protagonists involved.
Now, more than a decade since artists like Ed Rush & Optical, Source Direct and Matrix were hailed as the sonic beat scientists of the millennium, it’s become trendy to mash together a whole bunch of genres and styles all under one artist alias roof. Chase & Status made dubstep and drum & bass spiritual and literal
dancefloor partners in just a few swift moves and Sub Focus turned his hand to bassline house alongside classic jungle and technoelectro infused D&B on his recent self-titled debut album. Meanwhile Annie Mac has practically made an institution amongst dance music fans by splicing together all styles with a common theme – incredible, filthy basslines and a cheeky attitude. But amongst all the multi-genre mashing and the come-and-go tunes of the day, it can be hard to pick out something which has a shelf life longer than the next epileptic bassline to quake the local dancefloor or the latest remix from a moribund LFO maniac, slowly descending into blog house madness. However, into that void steps a producer with a history for sticking to his aesthetic guns; a producer who’s not afraid to touch the other side of the genre explosion; a producer who arrives at the party armed with a suitcase full of subtlety and an outlook more akin to the artists of old. Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook dlives deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

SUBTLE013 Tensions – Sub Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Subtle Audio makes it’s return to the vinyl fold with this brand new 3 tracker by Austria’s Sub. Living at high altitude in his native land, it comes as no surprise that these tracks exude an icy sound. “Tensions” is a beautifully delicate piece of D&B. Sharp snares, hi-hats and drifting atmospheres are underpinned by a sub-zero bass sound. Suddenly the beats thicken and become twisted and glitchy. It’s almost as if a frozen lake you were standing on is beginning to crack and give way! “Halleluja” is on the half-speed tip and will not even sound like D&B to most. Choir voices are interrupted by a stepping beat and a shuddering, dirty bassline, offset by a world of icey atmospherics, echoes and feedback. This sound is truly from another planet. “Hydra” is something a little different for Subtle Audio – clocking in at 120bpm but it certainly doesn’t sound like house or techno! It’s a nicely mellow track with a lurching, jerky beat that is filtered and reversed but always rhythmical. Dark Rhodes keys and then a bright piano line ensure a nice variance of mood in this beautifully balanced piece.

MEDI024 Protecting Hands Remixes – Clouds Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Following on from the highly acclaimed original productions ‘Protecting Hands (Parts 1 and 2)’ released mid-2009 on DEEP MEDi Musik, Clouds have enlisted Berkane Sol’s label owner Geiom and experimental electronic minimalists Isan to dissect and rebuild. Kamal Joory AKA Geiom has been busy producing since the late 90’s pushing the downtempo and ambient sounds of IDM and merging them with his love of raw grime and garage instrumentals. In 2006 Geiom started the ever-reliable Berkane Sol imprint releasing his own work (most notable the stunning ‘Reminssin’ featuring Marita) but also giving Brackles and Shortstuff their first outing on wax. Geiom’s remix of ‘Protecting Hands’ sketches out a dreamy, beautiful half-step approach with his love of electronica clearly coming heavily in to play, complimenting the original ghostly vocal perfectly. One of his best productions we think? Isan have been making minimalistic electronics since the mid 90’s with killer releases on Morr Music and Static Craven. Clouds are clearly fans of their work and this comes across in their remix as they dissect the original and create a blissful, beatless journey, permitting the sound to develop organically, with their intuitive grasp of melody and their intelligent manipulation of sound dictating its direction.

With a label HQ based half way up a cliff in deepest North Devon, and an artist roster that includes a Hampshire lad living in Leeds, a crew of Cubans holed up in Hackney, and the hottest new thing to come up out of Leicester since Willie Thorne hung up his cue, new label Shifting Peaks won’t be easy to pin down geographically . And musically it promises to be no less diverse, covering everything from the deeper end of Funky and 2010 Garage to Cuban Hip Hop and dubbed out Beats. Kicking things off in style for the label is Leeds resident Hackman, who’s ‘Pistol in Your Pocket’ tune was one of the highlights of the recent Fabric/Elevator comp. Lead cut ‘Always ‘ employs the vocal talents of newcomer Harper Lake over a bumping UKF/Nu Garage backing that’s both warm and deep, combining proper hooks with easy dancefloor appeal. Fast rising Londoner Brackles then takes the song and straps on a phuture – garage turbo-charger, adding techno textures and slamming beats for a crunching, dynamic rework. Two collaborative tracks from Quarta 330 and LV, made when the pair met the day after Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary party in November last year. These tunes exemplify the kind of meeting of minds where the best of both procucers comes to the surface, as Quarta 330’s 8-bit abstraction and melodic sense contrasts nicely with LV’s characteristic lush figures and shuffling rhythms. ‘Hylo’ finds 8-bit melodies made from rebuilt Gameboys and sonar-like bleeps weaved into the crunchy snap of a reverse drum beat and warm chords, breaking down into a sonorous motif before stepping up the pace once more. It’s an energetic mix of brittle and lush sounds. On the AA side, ‘Suzuran’ is a joint remix of Quarta 330’s own remix of Japanese chiptunes artists Dong. LV places the slurring space pop of the Japanese vocoder vocal melody inside a remix constructed from syncopated drums and offkey bleeping patterns. The results are catchy and alien, as melodic sweetness is juxstaposed with the tension of the setting.

24-year-old Kevin McAuley began making music with a two-track mixer, a keyboard and a tape deck. Discovering dubstep years later via the sounds of Mala in the backroom of a Leeds club in 2005, Kevin was inspired to found the city’s first dubstep night, Ruffage, and launched himself into the studio. Since then, Pangaea has released on labels such as Hotflush and Hessle Audio, as well as remix work for Untold and Commix. Hessle Audio was formed in Leeds in early 2007 by David Kennedy, Ben Thomson and Kevin McAuley. The label has released tunes by TRG, Martyn, Pangaea, Ramadanman / Pearson Sound, Joe and Untold. In addition, Hessle Audio tunes have appeared on compilations by Tempa, Scape, Soul Jazz and Global Underground. Hessle Audio hold a residency at London club Fabric.

This time its the turn of one of dubstep’s founding fathers D1, here to show them what its all about. ‘Jus Business’ has been finding its way into the sets of all the big hitters lately. With its dark rave stabs, tripping jungle beats and pounding sub bass its not hard to see why – serious business from D1. Things couldn’t be more contrasting on the flip with the energetic party roller ‘Pitcher’. Skipping beats and a quirky lead line, with funky esq. melodies and soulful grooves – a really bouncing track. 3024006 Remixes 1/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi-house community. First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape. Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies.
Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.
An integral part of every 3024 release, Erosie once again blesses this release with his inimitable visual style switching up to a monochrome design this time around.

Hyperdub has long been a fan of grime don Terror Danjah’s razor sharp productions, his unparalleled, skittering rhythm science, deadly riffs, brilliant technicolour synth squiggles, “gremlin cackle” signature and general ear for a catchy tune. On this first EP for the label, he showcase two strains of his many skills. ‘Acid’ cranks up the energy, with an ascending synth crashing into stuttering drums and synths. They play hide and seek with each other for a bit, before the track unexpectedly breaks into a 4 / 4 house rhythm, and then shatters into pieces again. But this one producer has managed to produce so many killer tracks Citrus could not just leave it alone… This Producer is Jade.. And his Venom LP is the result of his hard work. A deadly collection of productions that, once injected into the eardrum will grasp the host track by track untill there isnt anything left! The LP starts off with the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you havent heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Then its up to the second track.. the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time.. This Teched out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit.. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Track 3 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalistic sound, oldskool tech-steppin vibes are definitely the case here but with an upgraded 2009 feel! Then for track 4 Jade teams up with longtime producer friend Matt-U.. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this.. then logical is the way to go.. Moblaw is a straight up elblow greaser thatll make you get messy on the dancefloor. The funk just oozes off this tight production thatll make you scream for more! Then on to 5… where Jade remixes three of his best friends.. namely the dutch trio thats Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production.. But now its time to repay the favor as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dancefloor filth like no other. Have the tables turned?
Then for the next one where Jade teams up with another group of comrades.. namely the Mindscape boys! These guys arent by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke.. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for 7th Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality.. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. halfstep, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Track 8.. Jade goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond propertions! No 9 is the fantastic Phace rework of Cryptic which was first featured on Jade’s Ready EP.. Nothing but love for Phace and you know why… Germafunk all the way! nice and nerdy! For the final track its Jade’s My World which as also featured as his Sampler for this fantastic Album.

EXIT019 Wrong Way – Abstract Elements Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party. “Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here. “Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre.
Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been.
