After doing the rounds amongst DJ’s for a while now, Lifted Music presents Entrapment 12″. Two massive productions from top class engineer Apex, as he makes his highly anticipated return to the Lifted Music release schedule. Apex’ debut solo 12″ on Lifted Music is fronted by the now infamous ‘Entrapment’. After doing the rounds with the scenes biggest, the release date is finally set for the public to get their hands on it, and they will not be disappointed. A groovy live bass guitar accompanies a downright quirky melody, all blended beautifully through that trademark Apex engineering. A hot-stepping kick snare combo laced with intricate end-bar fills pay homage to a producer whose quality control has won awards, and testifies as to why he is one of the in demand artists at the moment. If ‘Entrapment’ is anything to go by, 2010 could once again be another big year for Apex. BRIG014 For Love Or Money – D Kay & Concept Brigand Music 12″ Vinyl
Here comes the next 12″ from Vienna’s finest. Mastermind DKAY teams up with the the now firmly established CONCEPT, who, after having proved his production skills on various releases, adds the funk to the BRIGAND flavour. Epic 70s horns and house vocals set the tone for this high roller, called FOR LOVE OR MONEY. Favoured by Fabio, High Contrast and the likes, it does not only get the party started, but is also a pleasurable listening experience. Old school analogue production technique has been applied to give this tune a warm and driving edge, that seems to be missing in most computer based productions these days. A. Twilight – BMK is an up and coming producer who has had releases on many other labels and is set to be a rising star for 2010. He comes to Audio Danger Records with a track that is full of summer dance floor niceness with its flowing bass line, vocals and pads. The track is reminiscent of the early liquid sound in 2003-04 with heavier beats and cut vocal samples. The combination of harder drums with the pad and vocal elements come together to bring a track that is sure to stand the test of time. Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene. Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music.
Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008), and the more recent Aesaunic EP (2009), this album takes the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive. You Got Me and So You Think You’re Special, released as an advance 12”, reflect the range of the album with the huge bass and frenetic energy of the former contrasting with the melancholic atmospheres and melodies of the latter. The listless beauty of Before, the aggressively percussive Minerals and the hyperactive electro of On Deck provide further stylistic variation, but this is not simply a collection of tracks – for the best sonic results this album should be listened to in full.

STORM016 Solid State – Emalkay Storming Productions 12″ Vinyl
Fresh off the back of the massive single ‘When I Look At You’ & ‘AGS’ on sister label Dub Police. Emalkay steps up to Storming Productions with two wicked tracks. They have been tearing up dancefloors worldwide over the last couple of months. Both remaining permanent fixtures in the sets of Caspa, Benga, Skream, The Others, N-Type, Hatcha and just about anybody who is anybody in dubstep right now. Solid State is a brutal anthem that has been melting a few faces as of late. The track has a dark and mystical intro with drums tougher than Mike Tyson’s knuckles. ARX004 Minimal Bump EP – Nekochan Airflex Labs 12″ Vinyl
Nekochan’s 2009 debut download-only release met with success in pushing dubstep into new zones, and now comes the first foray into vinyl, with the three-track killer ‘Minimal Bump’ EP, that will further reconfigure notions of what bass music can be. The title track has already been featured on Mary Anne Hobbs, who played an early version in may last year after hearing it on myspace. ‘Minimal Bump’ is a powerful techno/break/dubstep instrumental with a huge kick and seismic bass work, custom built for dancefloor mayhem, with its layered synths, advanced rythmic shifts, cavernous drops, and an explosive production style that recalls the intricacies of prime Meat Beat Manifesto at the same time as giving Reso a run for his money. On the flip, ‘Bombine’ is another view entirely; a emotive disjointed stepper with melancoly pop tones, which unfolds in a smokey torch-song style to reveal further layers to Nekochan’s innate musical instincts. It’s fluidly evolving contrasts between dominant bass levels, powerful rhythms, and subtlypitched Japanese strings mix and grow around that voice, putting the listener as much in mind of Burial’s sadness as Bjork’s vivid expression. Finally, Vahiné is a refreshing journey into a lighter and atmospheric dubstep style, reminiscent in mood of Scuba or Martyn, with a dynamic bouncy drum pattern delivering the perfect groove for the heavy bassline to ride on while the sweet string melody leads from the front. Essential purchase for anyone seeking out new directions in heady dancefloor electronics.

Now if you don’t know, Jay is an LA resident, and part of the collective that includes Flying Lotus, Ras G, Gaslamp Killer, y’all know the names… Jay’s best friend is a computer, surprisingly named Computer. Computer is a wise cracking collection of circuit boards, and enjoys spitting crazy verses over Jay’s synth-heavy beats. Maintain is their first collaboration that has reached wax, and boy, you better brace yourselves! Ascending analog flourishes scattered over Jay’s minimal beats, giving Computer room to do his thing. Jay’s epic production packs more into 3 and a half minutes than most producers can cram into 10. True to form, we have drafted an unrivaled array of remixers in for the project. MEDI024 Protecting Hands Remixes – Clouds Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl

Following on from the highly acclaimed original productions ‘Protecting Hands (Parts 1 and 2)’ released mid-2009 on DEEP MEDi Musik, Clouds have enlisted Berkane Sol’s label owner Geiom and experimental electronic minimalists Isan to dissect and rebuild. Kamal Joory AKA Geiom has been busy producing since the late 90’s pushing the downtempo and ambient sounds of IDM and merging them with his love of raw grime and garage instrumentals. In 2006 Geiom started the ever-reliable Berkane Sol imprint releasing his own work (most notable the stunning ‘Reminssin’ featuring Marita) but also giving Brackles and Shortstuff their first outing on wax. Geiom’s remix of ‘Protecting Hands’ sketches out a dreamy, beautiful half-step approach with his love of electronica clearly coming heavily in to play, complimenting the original ghostly vocal perfectly. One of his best productions we think? Isan have been making minimalistic electronics since the mid 90’s with killer releases on Morr Music and Static Craven. Clouds are clearly fans of their work and this comes across in their remix as they dissect the original and create a blissful, beatless journey, permitting the sound to develop organically, with their intuitive grasp of melody and their intelligent manipulation of sound dictating its direction.

With a label HQ based half way up a cliff in deepest North Devon, and an artist roster that includes a Hampshire lad living in Leeds, a crew of Cubans holed up in Hackney, and the hottest new thing to come up out of Leicester since Willie Thorne hung up his cue, new label Shifting Peaks won’t be easy to pin down geographically . And musically it promises to be no less diverse, covering everything from the deeper end of Funky and 2010 Garage to Cuban Hip Hop and dubbed out Beats. Kicking things off in style for the label is Leeds resident Hackman, who’s ‘Pistol in Your Pocket’ tune was one of the highlights of the recent Fabric/Elevator comp. Lead cut ‘Always ‘ employs the vocal talents of newcomer Harper Lake over a bumping UKF/Nu Garage backing that’s both warm and deep, combining proper hooks with easy dancefloor appeal. O4H001 Seeking feat Yolanda – Ghettozoid 12″ Vinyl

The origins of it’s name came from a seminal summer in Berlin, where Sophie Ruston (Ghettozoid) and Mai Harper (label founders) first laid eyes on each other. The name One4Ho incorporates Ghettozoid’s obsession with Miami Bass. Essentially we are ladies that love the 140tempo.
IDJ mag review: Bristol resident Ghettozoid brings in fêted vocalist Yolanda to help launch her One 4 Ho imprint. Moody washes of midrange synth provide an ample background for Yolanda’s stunning vocal spiritual, clockwork garage breaks and thunderous bass thrum adding a dash of urgency to the mix. Crackle house specialist Blue Daisy turns in a sick remix on the flip, dubbing the track hard as he stretches the samples tautly across his canvas – ambient vocal excursions eventually joined by a burrowing acid bassline and Daisy’s trademark squeezed beats.

Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement. On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc. On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1’s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!
A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!
B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

Bringing through yet more untapped talent is the people’s choice, Critical Music, who bring us the debut release from a trio of boxfresh producers that’s already been doing damage with those lucky enough to have it. With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one. Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special. Then on to ‘Remorse’ and the guys spook things out a little with a ghostly whispered samples and an off-kilter break rolling under paranoid synth stabs and pads. As more booming subs kick in the pace picks up with shuffling snares and heavily filtered sonics that fill the speakers to drive it forward hard, while still retaining a huge sense of space that’ll see this in the DJ boxes at the deeper end of the spectrum.

Set to shine in 2010, Mizz Beats is the 22 year-old from Hackney (East London) who aided and abetted labelmate Silkie in the creation of one of this year’s certified bangers: ‘Purple Love’. Earning her stripes in the midst of the UK’s grime scene, she has already produced for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Jammer and Lady Sovereign and she is undoubtedly one of the Anti Social Entertainment clique’s brightest prospects alongside Quest, Silkie, Kromestar, J5, Harry Craze and Heny G. Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. On the flip, ‘The Jester’ zips off in a different direction, carried by tougher, stripped-back drums and myriad 8-bit Gameboy bleeps, zaps and bumps. Rinse FM’s breakfast show host, DVA is a producer with a unique take on the UK Funky bug, blending the stiff 8-bar funk of grime with a super-supple rhythmic sensibility, sewing neon colours with a laid back precision into his tracks. ‘Natty’ is a prime example; drums stagger like they’re about to topple over, squelchy bass synths lock together a tough tribal drum pattern, liquid metal trickles around in the mix, and these contrasting elements react with explosive results on the dancefloor. Finish copy. Helsinki-based Non Person has been crafting his quirky audio sculptures since 2006, embracing the city’s burgeoning experimental music scenes as his playground. From dirty club tracks to audio installations and deep listening, he is no stranger to the numerous ways of compressing organic emotions into expressions in data. Coming from one of the first local proponents of the new wave of multicoloured “beat” music moving feet in select locations around the globe, Presenser / Mi Empress is a study in elasticised electronic hip-hop and moist, yet fiery 140bpm bass structures.

Smothered in trademark atmospheric stealth and slither, Move Your Soul has MRK1 making fanfares for imperial squadrons, and intercepting vintage female dance vocals in a hostage situation as he darts in and out of another of his chrome mazes. Remember when Peter Griffin from Family Guy is granted the wish of having his own theme music wherever he goes? MRK1 can conceivably pop round the newsagents to the sound of ominous intergalactic friction. Taken from the forthcoming potential lipsmacker Sound of Contagious album out soon, it stands in the gap between dubstep and electronica at its surliest, moving to an easy-to-follow path so that the mass of the situation becomes hard to take on the chin. In other words, it may move freely, but it still casts a serious shadow. Another album preview is The Electrician, which takes the rewiring of plugs to industrially draconian lengths. Synths are programmed to kick you both in the guts and your fillings as MRK1 walks the plank of spinning blades with a crystal finish, operated by a black-hearted Speak n Spell. Dubstep’s jackhammer blur of beats are dodged for a firm putting down of his foot while making the traditional aspect of dub stand out. PSQ002 Untitled / 1993 / Horizons – Furesshu Project Squared 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. This 12″ picks up where Furesshu’s digital releases at a dubstep tempo on Echodub left off but also pushes into the deep, Berlin inspired techno sound that he is presently concentrating on. 1993 sounds fast for its mid 130s tempo, the bass drives the trackís pace and the delay affected stabs provide just enough melody. Horizons feels slower, you could perhaps describe it as a half step track although it twists up the formula for that sub genre. The bass evolves and changes throughout the track, rising and falling, coupled with drones and drums punctuating the track rather than providing a constant element. Untitled marks a change in Furesshuís sound. 4/4 deep techno; 11 minutes of gradual, constant evolution in the melodic parts of the track but the driving, perfectly toned kick drum and hi hats holding the groove in place.

Nevertheless, HENCH is one label that remains at the forefront of this ever-expanding scene. The 13th release from the imprint presents an outstanding 12” comprising of ‘Rhythm’ from label boss, Jakes, along with the debut release from Bristol’s rapidly rising star, Mensah. These tracks both feature on the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1 (soon to be released). The compilation is to be mixed by Jakes and will feature unreleased tracks from Papa ‘ench himself. The release will contain new exclusive tracks from Komonazmuk, Chasing Shadows, Lost and Giant, as well as providing a platform for debut releases on the label from Minus, Tek-one and Mensah.
A. JAKES – RHYTHM is the name, and you can bet your bottom dollar that this tune has it. Immediately setting the step, a background siren gives the warning for what’s about to follow. With Jakes’ vocal defining the riff of the track, get ready for a bassline that’s best described as ‘underwater funk’. This tune’s had a lot of love from all the right people, and it’s not hard to see why – with Jakes’ innovative flavour stamped all over it – Rhythm truly stands out in the crowd.
AA. MENSAH – PULSE 80’s – Flip over for the bass-led rhythm of ‘Pulse 80’s’. Building the intro with a glitchy lead-synth and punchy kick-drum, nothing detracts from the simple yet effective pulse of the beat. When the bass drops, expect the dancefloor to be bouncing up and down in time. Showcasing Mensah’s diverse influences, this is just one example of the various different styles of dubstep productions he’s producing right now. Watch out for further releases on HENCH from this young-one, we are tipping Mensah for big things.

Finish copy. For the HENCH camp, this is one very exciting release. Featuring the debut release on the label from Croydon producers, Tek-One, and yet another stunner from HENCH favourite, Komonazmuk. Both tracks exemplify what this label has become renowned for – bass-heavy, forward-thinking dubstep pressure – and it also happens that both tracks are absolutely killer! These tracks both feature on the HENCH Mixtape Vol. 1 (soon to be released). The compilation is to be mixed by Jakes and will feature unreleased tracks from Papa ‘ench himself. A. TEK-ONE – BROKEN STRING This is one standout tune, recognisable from the off. A haunting synth with the kind of vocal rare in dubstep productions, brings you in gently to the drop. From there its all change – the drum roll makes way for a mechanical and glitchy bass riff that’s going to have people running for cover. With the occasional vocal stab, Tek-One’s effort is an outstandingly paradoxical release – both beautifully atmospheric and dancefloor-destroying at the same time. Having already remixed Way out West and Fugative, Tek-One are one’s to watch.
AA. KOMONAZMUK – YOU FO’ A return to HENCH from one of Bristol’s most exciting producers; Komonazmuk. And using ‘You Fo’ as a measure, its clear that Komon’s style has matured significantly during that time. This release is a heavily dubby and technoinfused track that is a real creeper. Building a moody affair from the off, the sub-bass is complemented by tripped-out stabs of the synth. One for the connoisseurs of what dubstep has grown into – ‘You Fo’ pays homage to the melting pot of styles that contribute to what this genre is today. If nothing else, this track dictates that whatever you do in 2010, you need to pick up Komonazmuk’s album dropping on HENCH later this year.

BMF001 Dirty Trumpet / Dirty Salsa – Sami Sanchez BM Funky 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. It was not the hand of chance which secured Sami Sanchez’s place in today’s DJs and producers arena as one of the freshest, most promising up-and-coming names. Sanchez got his first gig at a street party in Cuba. Playing a mixture of Reggaeton, hip hop, Garage and Ragga, he knew right there and then his future was in music. Whilst at University, studying a degree in Sound Engineering, Sami Sanchez starting working at the cult-status record store Black Market Records (currently BM Soho). Sami soon started extending his musical expertise to DnB, US house and the then-newly developed Dubstep and UK Funky. Combining his urban musical expertise and his Latin roots influences, Sami quickly progressed and started playing at top Latin club nights. He imminently became a favourite on the Urban Latin scene, playing alongside DJs such as Tony Touch, DJ Nelson, DJ Buddha, Don Omar, Tego Calderon, Andy Boy and Khrisy Angel. It was in 2009 when Sami suffered an acute brain injury, but through sheer determination and strong will to live, he is continuing to follow his dream. Only eight months later, we are proud to announce Sami Sanchez’s first official UK Funky release, ‘Dirty Salsa’ & ‘Dirty Trumpet’. Supported by Worldclass Management & BM Soho, the double A-side 12” is already causing a stir on the dancefloor. The dramatic, catchy ‘Dirty Trumpet’ and the hit-sy ‘Dirty Salsa’ are no doubt building Sami Sanchez’s reputation as one of the UK’s finest UK Funky producers. EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

They are influenced by the early tech step era of Drum and Bass and inspired by various other styles such as House, Dub, Hip Hop or Minimal Techno. The first Mindscape release came out on DJ Trace’s London-based label, DSCI4. Since then Mindscape have had several tracks released on Subtitles, Hospital, Inneractive, Red Light, Citrus, Celsius, Syndrome and Fokuz Recordings. Reefer has had Dj support from Phil Source, Ed Rush, Cause 4 Concern, Break, Trace, Optiv and Squire among others. Soul Intent – Future Funk – Phil Source and Outrage Remix Alex Judd aka Soul Intent has a big reputation building around him. He works out of Nottingham in the U.K. He has already had releases out on Creative Source, Blindside, Samurai, MacII, 31 Records and Horizons. This guy is part of the new breed of Drum and Bass. “Future Funk” featured on VAMPDJUK007 and was a big track on the circuit played by Fabio and Grooverider (Radio 1). Grooverider has tipped Soul Intent to be one to watch for the future! Watch out for more Soul Intent music on Vampire. Phil Source and Outrage who have remixed the track are big producers that have featured on labels such as Metalheadz, Good Looking, Mo Wax, Virgin, Backlash and J-Tek.

Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement. On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc. On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

This duo has helped to keep Hard:edged at the forefront of the German Drum and Bass scene. Their latest offering comes in the form of, ‘East Of The Underground’. Backed with a remix from Brazilian bad boy, Bungle; who takes matter into his own hands with a stellar remix, creating a delicious double A-sided package. First up is Mr. Bungle, who rides the sample over shattering breaks, while breathing life into the tune via a tight rhythmically undulating bass line. Clever synth work is also put to use on this nearly essential tool. This is a track that possesses as much musicality as it does excitement. Dub Tao start the original off with a classic two step break, letting the samples and atmospheres create a tension before a thunderous bass drop. Dub Tao, certainly don’t need any help getting their sound tight, but who would turn down a little mixing magic from Formation’s soul-man Influx Uk. He deftly applies his ability to work within the realms of melodic Drum and Bass, while still adding some grit and edge. A skill the DT boys are quickly learning themselves. This EP most certainly posses a plethora of versatility which will aid it in finding a place in the DJ sets of many and blaring out of the speakers on a dance floor near you.

Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost comes to life.

Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction. ‘Medicate’ has received DJ support from LV (Hyperdub), Ben UFO (Hessle Audio), Pangaea (Hessle Audio, Hotflush), Blackdown (Keysound), Mick Pressure (Naked Lunch), Narcossist/Kowton (Keysound)

Finish copies. Raiden’s label always comes with something different from the usual D&B formula rubbish. Martsman’s track is very impressive, with his refreshing future sound. On the other side it’s business as usual from Raiden with help from Khanage, its funky, and not as full on as normal, but again right at the cutting edge. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. In 2008, tracks on Warm Communications and Hospital Records’ sub label Med School attract the attention of a steadily growing audience also from outside the Drum&Bass scene.

Fresh from tours in the USA and Australia, Distance commits two more of his killer dubplates to vinyl, putting an evil smirk on the face of Dubstep DJs and fans everywhere. Now seven releases in, the Chestplate imprint is well and truly established as a buy-on-sight label. This time around sees a new Distance anthem on side A, accompanied by a Pinch reversion of Distance’s modern classic ‘V’ on the flip. Twilight is Distance in primetime dancefloor destruction mode. No messin’! The theremin like spooky ambient melodies oscillate and brood, making way for the trademark Distance crunching riff. It smacks of Distance on top of his game. It slays and it dips, only to come back harder. This one should remind the Dubstep new skool that you don’t have to tear your brain out to make tear out. Turn the 12 over and original badman, Bristol lynchpin Pinch, comes correct with his version of the Distance speaker wrecker V. Pinch twists up and reconfigures the original into a new sonic horror show. This should be the office ambience of torture chambers everywhere. Pinch suppresses the drive and riff of Distance’s version, accentuating the more unnerving elements; yes it’s subtle, but it’s not any less devastating. If the system packs enough punch, this one will literally turn guts. Major support comes from the crop of discerning dubstep DJs, with full blessings coming from the likes of Skream, Mary Anne Hobbs and Hatcha. Alongside contemporaries like Benga, Skream, Pinch and Digital Mystikz, Distance has been responsible for shaping the Dubstep sound as we know it today. Finish Copy Promo’s. 3-track debut release from the UK’s Funk Ethics, first noticed and permanently represented by London’s legendary Dubstep label Destructive Records. “Blues Is Now” is the tune that launched FE into the limelight and was quickly picked up by Mary Anne Hobbs and showcased on her Radio 1 show, it was originally featured on the Destructive CD album which came out fairly recently (DSTCD001). After the success of the first release (by Boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named ‘Space Dimension Controller’….the techno funk alias of 19-year-old Jack Hamill. Following on perfectly from Boxcutter and Kinnego Flux’s “A Familiar Sound” on KGO001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved-up electro. Equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and early Aphex Twin, Jack’s all-analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound that’s a mile away from contemporary electro and house. The beats are low slung and funky, and the melodies are addictive and show a natural flair. On “The Love Quadrant”, a girl / boy vocal exchange sets the scene while the track builds momentum, before the whole thing spaces off on a sweet minimoog solo. On the flip, “Electropod-250 Collision” has a deep 808 pulse and flanged bass, topped off with Detroit-inspired melodies and blurred out reverbs.

Having taken almost a year away from vinyl following Hatcha Vs Kromestar’s Brother’s Grim LP, and concentrating on a host of successful digital releases, Eight:FX recently returned to 12” for a series of vinyl to coincide with their Future:Dubstep compilations. 01 was mixed by Kiss FM’s Hatcha while 02 was mixed by newcomers Bare Noize. The first Future: Dubstep 12” release featured tracks from both of these artists and was the start of a new push for Eight:FX to build back up vinyl fan’s awareness of the label. Griping about dubstep seems pretty pointless at the moment – for almost every formulaic record on the shelves, there’s another young, creative producer beating a much more interesting path. Norwich’s Jack Stevens – better known as Sully – is justifiably seen as one of those individuals. Tantalisingly doing the rounds on dub for long enough now, “Reminder” and “Jackman’s Rec” should usher in Sully’s biggest moment yet. Since Blackdown (AKA Martin Clark) included both in his end-of-year dubstep chart for Pitchfork, he and DJ partner Dusk have supported the tunes consistently on Rinse FM and at FWD>>, also featuring “Jackman’s Rec” in their XLR8R magazine podcast last year. “Reminder” has subsequently been deployed in sets by Ben UFO, Pangaea and Tomb Crew, the latter including it in their recent contribution to FACT magazine’s respected mix series. One of Sully’s tricks is that his music never falls into predictable slots. “Reminder” might be a peak-time, late-summer skanker, but there isn’t a clichéd reggae sample in earshot. Instead, it’s closer to a translation of pioneering producer Pole’s crackly dub abstractions into dancefloor form. “Jackman’s Rec” is a velvety roller that on one level, is the best example so far of how Sully’s intuition for swing allows him to nail the dark sensuality of early FWD>> beats. Yet at the same time, it’s in no way trapped in nostalgia for that era, simply sounding like the next step for future garage. “Reminder” / “Jackman’s Rec” is released on 12” vinyl and digital formats, including 50 12” white-labels available in advance. In addition, two more excursions from Sully, “Sleazy” and “Cadillac”, are on sale as downloads only, recommended in September by Boomkat.
