2009 has been a good year for Critical, having built yet further on its reputation as being one of the most forward-thinking underground drum and bass labels in the scene. Appearances from Spectrasoul, Sabre, Serum & Vapour paved the way for the heavily acclaimed Critical Sound compilation that saw label boss Kasra representing the ‘Future of D&B’ at Fabric’s 10th birthday and even guesting on BBC Radio 1. Now just in time for Christmas Critical serve up one last delicious 12” before the new year from the mighty Break. Smooth’s the word as ‘Late Drop’ gets under way with lazy-day pads and a light stepping break that runs through the DJ-friendly intro all the way to the breakdown. Wait for the typically gnarly Breakbass though and then it’s throttle down, away we go on this late night tech-roller that oozes class and sees Critical’s eyes set firmly on the dance floor once again. ‘Crunchy’ kicks off with some interesting orchestration and a simple stepping break that flowsunderneath jungle samples and a distant vocal. It’s all about the distorted b-line though as Break doeswhat he does best letting it worm its way into your psyche. No-nonsense D&B to move your feet. FFLP1-1 Optimus Prime – Chook Full Force Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Chook is that artist, and The Cocoon, Chook’s debut long-playing project, moves beautifully through drum & bass, minimal techno and stunning ambient soundscapes without pausing for breath. The Cocoon is the culmination of half a decade’s worth of hard work. Starting out in 2004, Chook launched Full Force Recordings as an output for the fierce and disturbing side of European techno influenced drum & bass. The label garnered support right from the off with DJs as diverse as Roni Size, J Majik and Calyx & Teebee all queuing up to work Full Force’s releases into their sets. Chook, alongside friends such as Germany’s Phace (Subtitles), New Zealand’s State of Mind (Shogun Audio) and USA’s Mayhem (Ram Records) put the label firmly on the map with tracks from some of the world’s finest breakbeat artists, keeping the music policy as credible, long-lasting D&B. Now, five years since he started Full Force, Chook delves deeper into his influences, spreading his wings as a producer without resorting to cheap tricks and sheep-like trend following. From the growling bass of Optimus Prime through to the inchperfect elements of Time Running Backwards and the building, spacious progression of Toontown, The Cocoon is a lesson in staying true to your beliefs and sticking the middle finger to those who dare question your motives. Some might consider that a lost art in drum & bass these days.

DRUNK015 Don’t Sleep – Hyetal & Shortstuff Punch Drunk Records 12″ Vinyl
Punch Drunk launches into 2010 with colourful cuts to beat the freeze in the form of two hot collaborations from Hyetal & Shortstuff. The hyper synth frenzy of Don’t Sleep and the technicolour visions of Ice Cream have been heavily rotated by Jackmaster, Brackles, Untold, Gemmy, Ben UFO, 2562, Oneman, Starkey amongst others.A flurry of releases in 2009 put Hyetal at the centre of a Bristol second wave of producers. Having caught the ear of Mary Anne Hobbs and subsequently appearing on her Planet Mu compilation ‘Wild Angels’, Hyetal has also seen releases for Bristollian labels Reduction and Soul Motive, and also for Texas based Formant Recordings. Releases on Planet Mu, Ramp Recordings, Berkane Sol and Pollen throughout 2009 have seen Shortstuff assert himself as a key mover in the new wave of grime, garage, funky and hip hop influenced beats and basslines infiltrating the UK underground. Shared roots in the forward thinking Nottingham Futureproof and Wigflex scenes, Shortstuff has recently launched his own imprint, Blunted Robots, alongside Brackles.

For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).

The long awaited 16bit – ‘Chainsaw Calligraphy’ remixes are upon us, this is Part 1 of 2 featuring the JAKES and PROPATINGZ mixes.
JAKES, the founding member of the HENCH crew was an obvious target to carry out the Chainsaw remix, being a big fan of the original and regularly rinsing the track out in the raves, he’s given the track the signature Jakes sound, psychedelic bass-lines and heavyweight percussion, watch out for the sample too, see if you recognise it. Heavy support coming from N-TYPE (Rinse FM), MISTAJAM (Radio1), WALSH, TRUTH, MARLOW and HATCHA (Kiss FM).
UK born but now living in LA PROPATINGZ has his musical history in the Breaks scene, a long purveyor of the sound and a regular on the live scene he has more recently switched his style and has been directly influenced by 16bit’s sound. He has big releases lined up and is beginning to cause quite a stir with his tracks featuring on Radio 1 etc…..def one to look out for. His remix was written over the course of a year, alot of blood sweat and tears have gone into it, and the listener will realise this when he/she hears it, devastating, pure and simple. Idle Hands is a vinyl based label operating out of Rooted Records in Bristol. The focus of the label is on raw and experimental dance floor tracks, in the best traditions of the UK underground. What’s to say about the phenomenal production talent of Mark Pritchard that has not already been said? Mark has been lovingly producing cutting edge music for some two decades now under numerous music guises and aliases such as Global Communications, Reload, Troubleman, Jedi Knights and most recently under his Harmonic 313 moniker for Warp Records. Along the way Mark has captured the attention of the most discerning industry heavyweights, be it DJ Jazzy Jeff extolling the virtues of his Harmonic 33 project, Kenny Dope raving about his Troubleman output, or tastemakers such as Gilles Peterson, Mary Anne Hobbs and Benji B eagerly anticipating the next email from Mr Pritchard bearing the fruits of his labour in the studio.
Over the last four years Mark has become entranced with the bass weight of dubstep from such pioneering figures as Mala, Kode9, Benga and Skream to name but a few. Finish Copy Promo’s. Fresh off the back of the massive single ‘When I Look At You’ & ‘AGS’ on sister label Dub Police. Emalkay steps up to Storming Productions with two wicked tracks. They have been tearing up dancefloors worldwide over the last couple of months. For the second sampler of the Sync:Saphir album collaboration, the sounds are switched up a bit, bringing in a very heavy remix of Electrosoul System’s Fun (from BLUS004) and newcomer BIONIC1’s Love Machine. These two tunes put a new spin on the usual Blu Saphir and Syncopix releases you’re used to, bringing deep, techy, rolling vibes to the table. You’re all used to Henree, spitting out releases over the last five years on the likes of Blindside, Deep Kut, Sound Trax, Lucky Devil, Phunkfiction, Soul:R and Vampire. BIONIC1 is a newcomer to Drum & Bass, but he’s got a rolled out sound that’s not to be missed!

A. ELECTROSOUL SYSTEM — FUN (HENREE REMIX) Before listening to this remix, you might want to revisit the original to notice the change in texture and sound. Henree definitely lays it down with this remix. Bass heavy and driving, you’ll feel bass quakes rolling through the floor as this one passes through the sound system. The opening resembles the original, but that’s all you’re going to get that hasn’t really changed. The moody chord progression that is stabilized throughout the track is enough to make a spine tingle, while the minimal vocal adds spice and atmosphere to an already amazing work. Very melodic and uplifting, an excellent choice in remix selection for this record!

B. BIONIC1 — LOVE MACHINE There is no one word to describe this track. One second you’re locked inside some type of futuristic space encounter, and then bombarded by techy stabs and vicious bass in the next. Following a sexy and seductive vocal, “Wanna go for a ride?,” all chaos breaks loose! Rolling tech funk is the name of the game here! Fans of labels like DNAudio, Black Reign LTD, Quarantine, Critical and Shadow Law will want to check into this one!

“Speaking to The End in mid-2008, Exit boss and Autonomic mastermind Darren White, AKA dBridge, had these words to say about his beloved genre: “…when I listen to tunes from the last two or three years and compare them to tunes from the era that I believe it was at its most interesting, they don’t even compare. This isn’t music that people outside of our scene can look to, and that’s a big beef of mine.” Jump ahead to early 2010 and—thanks to the increasingly wide-ranging output of Instra:mental, SpectraSoul, Data and co—things don’t look quite so bleak. In fact, we might forgive Mr White for having been a little overly pessimistic: it’s his label that gave birth to 2009’s best drum & bass full-length, an album which, in drawing together influences as diverse as Ed Rush, OMD and Autechre (and wilfully refusing to tick any obvious dance floor boxes at that), positively commands attention.

Judging by the maturity of the thirteen pieces on display, the culprit—Australia’s Cam McLaren—is no newcomer to the scene. Take the driving “From a Distance,” a darkly somatic voyage into post-apocalyptic diaspora (think Vangelis remixed by Photek, or vice versa) made in collaboration with fellow NonPlus operative ASC, or the dreamy “Lime Green,” which for over three minutes swirls and hovers in a state of blissed-out abandon before a slinky rim-tap snap lumbers into view. Clearly, no easy points are out to be scored. Things are equally unyielding at the slower, garage-leaning tempo of “Feeling Like We Do,” which sounds like Burial under general anaesthetic (a good thing, believe me), and the stuttering, morphine-addled “Short Lived,” perhaps the darkest piece on what, at times, is a doggedly bleak album.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. Opener “Long Lies,” although fragile, offers a tentative glimpse of hope, like the first light of morning breaking over an uncertain horizon, while “Fog,” arriving deep into proceedings, serves to alleviate the mounting tension with flickering keys and warm, glowing subs. Those in search of dance floor firepower, meanwhile, need look no further than the T2-drenched techstep growl of “Pseudo Echo” (a lethal, stripped-back roller), or the hyper-compressed bass dynamics of “Reflex Reaction,” which no doubt benefits from Instra:mental’s recent excursions into full-blown stepping territory. Sure, it’s not your average main room fodder, but, patently, this is not your average drum & bass LP. It’s far, far better than that.

In fact, there’s only one real blooper on the album: the schmaltzy “Life Is Timing,” which, sadly, delves a little too far into the champagne sipping terrain evoked by its title, and fails to integrate with what, taken in whole, is a remarkably coherent piece of work. What marks it out—and to a degree which, in the recent history of drum & bass, only dBridge’s The Gemini Principle equals—is its refusal to make concessions in the name of sales, airplay, MC compatibility and such like. There are no “big tunes,” no crushing breaks, no epic drops and, most pleasingly in a genre blighted by trite samples, no vocals. It’s simply one man’s vision of dark, futuristic bass music, and a powerful articulation—indeed, the most powerful one yet—of the Autonomic sound. Music that those outside the scene can, and really should, look to “.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

Instra:mental welcome a new addition to the Nonplus+ camp who goes by the name of ASC. This producer is by no means new to making music, but recently his productions have become an essential addition to dBridge & Instra:mental’s Autonomic podcast series and also frequents their club sets.
a) ASC ‘Porcelain’ is a perfect illustration as to why Instra:mental have been paying ASC’s music so much attention. It begins with a glitchy yet groove-laden beat coupled with dramatic piano and fx stabs, then fills out with a warm drawing sub bass and smooth atmospheres. As the track progresses and you think it’s reached its climax, ASC cleverly layers an almost oriental sounding percussion stab to accompany the bass line and picks up the track to another level. This track is a prime example of being able to express the utmost with the minimum.
aa) ASC ‘Focus Inwards’ is the deeper side of this 12” and as the title suggests, takes you on a journey into yourself. Fully charged with progressive chords and melodies alongside electric sounding drum fills and percussion, the arrangement, musical content and pure elegance of this track give us an insight into ASC’s compositional abilities and potential for the future.

INFRA003 Infra003EP – Spatial Infrasonics 10″ Vinyl
The Spatial 10-inch EP series reaches its third and most visceral installment yet with ‘90729′ and ‘90807′. Spatial’s inaugural release on Infrasonics in late 2008 was enthusiastically welcomed by listeners, DJsand critics, as was its follow-up earlier this year, a reaction attributable to the producer’s instinctive fit with one of the prevailing moods in dubstep – in reclaiming the fluidity of 2-step garage and reappropriating dub-techno processes, these productions capably stand alongside those of Martyn or 2562. More than the execution of these satisfying tropes, though, their strength lies in a spooky attunement to the faint vibrations of a whole spectrum of dancefloor epiphanies, presenting in some ways a crisper, less melancholy counterpart to Burial, or even James Kirby’s projects as The Caretaker, but from the right side of the comedown. This latest collection of tracks, possibly Spatial’s most evocative, takes indirect inspiration from experience of the kind of ‘91-era Euro-rave documented in Warlock’s recent mix for FACT magazine. Removed as the comparison might seem given their wrought, contemporary sound, vestiges are detectable, such as the transmuted hoover basslines, hollow panic-synths and ectoplasmic vocal trails that at the peak of these tunes threaten to fill out Spatial’s characteristically airy, open-textured mix. Correspondingly, ‘90729′ and ‘90807′ all constitute conscious attempts to aim more squarely at the dancefloor, with success already coming in the form of DJ support from Untold, Incyde, T++, and Dubwar NYC resident Dave Q.

EXITCD004 Live For Never LP (CD Format) – Consequence Exit Records CD
Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

Raiden’s label always comes with something different from the usual D&B formula rubbish. Martsman’s track is very impressive, with his refreshing future sound. On the other side it’s business as usual from Raiden with help from Khanage, its funky, and not as full on as normal, but again right at the cutting edge. Martsman got into Drum&Bass around the end of the 90s. Debuting on New York based Offshore Recordings in 2005, he released on smaller as well as established labels like Alphacut Records or Counter Intelligence in the following years. In 2008, tracks on Warm Communications and Hospital Records’ sub label Med School attract the attention of a steadily growing audience also from outside the Drum&Bass scene.

If you’re The Upbeats, you never know when inspiration is going to hit, or leave you curled up on the floor with laughter-induced abdominal muscles pains. In this particular scenario, their inspiration was a whispered Brazilian ghetto story related to them by a friend. The story of the Caveraos (English translation: Big Skeleton), a super-tank full of Navy Seal trained Brazilian gang members known to terrorise the favelas of Rio De Janeiro, or on good days, distribute Nike sneakers and free cable. Sounds fucked up right? Anyway, as you’ve probably gathered by now, The Upbeats were suitable taken with this story, and having already floated the idea of a haunted-house album, decided to title their third album Big Skeleton, out of homage to the Caveraos; and horror in general.

A deadly collection of productions that, once injected into the eardrum will grasp the host track by track until there isn’t anything left! The LP starts off with the track suitably named “No Cure”… A Lethal tune that will keep you grasping for air every time. This Tech’d out battering-ram is made for even the biggest powerhouses to get blown to pieces in just a single hit. “Hit em in between the eyes” click click BOOM! Then flip it over for the title track “Venom” where Jade teams up with the legendary Rymetyme! This time things get different as the rugged sounds will take down venues limb by limb like you haven’t heard before. Heavy over the top Neuro sounds rampage through the speakers to break loose the mayhem! Disc 2 contains the Icicle rework of “This Is My World” (the original features on the sampler) stripping down the original to an ice cold minimalist sound. Oldskool tech-steppin vibes are definitely the case here but with an upgraded 2009 feel! For side 4 Jade teams up with long-time producer friend Matt-U. They did their first release together so this was a logical step. And if logical could sound so phat as this. then logical is the way to go. Moblaw is a straight up elbow greaser that’ll make you get messy on the dance floor. The funk just oozes off this tight production that’ll make you scream for more! Then on to disc 3… where Jade remixes three of his best friends. namely the Dutch trio that’s Black Sun Empire. This remix tributes the trio as they where the first ones to recognise the skill of Jade’s production. But now its time to repay the favour as his remix gives stasis that extra piece of fire it needed as it turns into a piece of dance floor filth like no other. Have the tables turned? Then for the flip Jade teams up with another group of comrades, namely the Mindscape boys! These guys aren’t by all means strangers to the Citrus label so their track “Banshee” fits on here like Rum & Coke. Just listen and let yourself get transported to the early 2000 era of DnB. But with a heavy 2009 taste. Then for the final disc. Jade goes all solo style with Forged Reality. this shows how versatile Jade can be when he’s alone in the studio. half step, rolling this one goes from the one to the next without any trouble. Then for the last one.. Jade doesn’t sees the last tune to be a tune to be neglected. So on this one he goes all out with Mindscape & Axiom! Heavy synthy basslines rip open the track just be pummelled by the beat towering beats that make this tune a pounder beyond proportions!

After the success of the first release (by Boxcutter himself) he introduces the masses to a producer named ‘Space Dimension Controller’….the techno funk alias of 19- year-old Jack Hamill. Following on perfectly from Boxcutter and Kinnego Flux’s “A Familiar Sound” on KGO001, it features 2 tracks of deep, loved-up electro. Equally inspired by both the tape warped soundtrack to Garth Merenghi’s Darkplace and early Aphex Twin, Jack’s all-analogue production gives his tracks a timeless sound that’s a mile away from contemporary electro and house. The beats are low slung and funky, and the melodies are addictive and show a natural flair. On “The Love Quadrant”, a girl / boy vocal exchange sets the scene while the track builds momentum, before the whole thing spaces off on a sweet minimoog solo. On the flip, “Electropod-250 Collision” has a deep 808 pulse and flanged bass, topped off with Detroit-inspired melodies and blurred out reverbs.

B-side opens with the amazing Arab-influenced RnB of Easy and The Center of Universe. “Hamada” sounds like Erkin Koray teaming up with Lil Jon and 40 virgins in an Ottoman hashish orgy. Finnish-Swedish Markis Sage makes a fantastic return with the 80’s tinged mellowness of “Creature of Lagoon”. Rarely a track of this beauty can be such a funkster at the same time. Icelandic prodigy Rabbi Bananas lashes out a broken beat holocaust with a riotous SH-101 screeching. “Cat Eat” is a true bastard of a track from the tiny country mostly known for its shoe-gazing soundscapes. We don’t know what the Canadian caveman Slow Hand Motëm was thinking when he sculpted the slow-burning crunk of “Smells Like Randy Barracuda”, and we don’t really give a shit. It’s Great. Shine on You crazy bromosexual! The victorious compilation is finished with one of the Harmönia staff’s favourites: Despite the misspelling, Daniel Savio’s heart achingly beautiful “People Die, Love Don’t” shines through the darkness like thousand crystal suns. Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spatial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions

Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. Relocate come up trumps once again with a full on roller of a track with trademark gliding bass dives and punchy stabs from a classic sidestepper Zed Bias sample and a very much house meets dubstep type of vibe. Both tunes are guaranteed to set the dance alight with their characteristic Iberian bass and groove flow. Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. Finish copy. Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today. Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River. Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy. Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions. Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground. Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody. Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out. This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

Lord Cry Cry aka Berlin- based Chris Donaghue pours every inch of his classically-trained ear for detail into this lovingly produced re-working of One Step Beyond, twinned with the rude Raw F*ck. Sweet-talking your backslide into a strange grooving action, this pair of beauties has slapped a large and toothsome grin in the face of every listener, including the likes of DJ Food, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) and Jon Kennedy. About Lord Cry Cry: After working in a steel mill and disregarding encouragement to become a Woolworths manager Lord Cry Cry, born Chris Donaghue, studied Law at Oxford University then Clinical Psychology. He worked as a psychologist in Kent then moved to Berlin to write a novel, join a band, build a snowman, schlep coal, and collect bottles. Just because he could. He completed a Masters degree in sound design and classical music composition in Berlin this year. This is his first solo vinyl release, after providing many a musical piece for various short European films.

White Label, Black sleeve. One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor. Vice Welcome to the Sprawl’s Red Light District, where anything can be bought… Lush chords and vocal stabs introduce Vice, whilst a broken and staggered beat provides the rhythm. An sleazy vibe is brought forth from the arrangement, which builds to it’s dramatic drop, with a huge bassline, that folds around the beat perfectly. The 2nd half of the track takes on a more musical approach, with lush synth tones providing a stunning melody to finish the track.
The Sprawl The dome towered over them, protecting them from the harmful rays that the Ozone layer could no longer shelter them from. Their sun was not one of gold, but of grey… Sinister ambience creeps towards you from the speaker as a heavy stepping beat provides the pace through The Spawl. Distant cries and the buzz of machinery mingle amongst each other, whilst drones buzz overhead. Dramatic effects break the beat apart before the breakdown, where a menacing bass enters the fray. Percussion hits, fragments of breaks and strange fx keep things moving throughout the track, with a distinct change in the second section keeping the listener interested till the end.
The Enemy Within Pain streaked through his body as the virus began to eat away at his cybernetics. Time was running out. Twisted and abstract, The Enemy Within is driven by it’s disgusting synth line and strange glitch beat. Technical yet restrained, it’s hypnotic patterns draw you into it’s midst, whilst bell like tones provide an ominous atmosphere. Hissing bitcrushed ride cymbals pick up the pace, whilst a distorted midtone provides the response to bass.
Antenna They fear the visionary experience, for you have to go through a kind of death to experience it… Featuring Cell and clocking in at 140 bpm, Antenna is mostly ambient in it’s approach until the later sections, where a huge thumping and distorted drum line is matched with a massive 808 bass section. Space like pads and synths and matched by strange whirring sounds, whilst distorted tones glitch in and out of it’s audio landscape. Fragments of radio messages can be heard, metaphysical messages that echo out of the speaker into your mind. A totally unique and abstract approach.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

DRUNKCD001 Good Energy (A Singles Collection) – RSD Punch Drunk Records CD
RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, jungle, 2-step and dubstep, From his musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has always had a strong dub aesthetic. Forming the, now legendary, production duo Smith and Mighty with collaborator Ray Mighty in 1987, the pair’s early releases on the Three Stripe label were influential in laying the groundwork for both the trip hop and jungle scenes for which Bristol would become renowned. A period of chart success and major label involvement in the early nineties was followed by a return to their underground roots for Smith and Mighty. During this time Rob also worked with Peter D. Rose to release groundbreaking music on their More Rockers imprint. Rob Smith also went on to collaborate with local roots reggae producers Henry & Louis. This fruitful relationship culminated in 2001 with the release of the fantastic ‘Time Will Tell’ LP. More recently, Rob Smith has found a new home as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, sub- heavy rhythms of dubstep. With releases on internationally respected labels such as Punch Drunk, Tectonic and Earwax, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystemtesting sub-lines and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007’s infectious junglist roller “Pretty Bright Lights” and 2008’s speaker destroying dread-fuelled steppers “Over It” & “Jah Way” has rapidly cemented them as anthems. This Punch Drunk CD collection compiles tracks from many of the 12”s released in the past two years under the RSD moniker.

IME013 Elephants – October Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine.

DP030 King Pin – The Others Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police churn out yet another stonking release from label veterans The Others. Kicking off the single is the almighty ‘Kingpin’, which has been battered by the likes of Caspa, Skream, N-Type and The Scratch Perverts. With an intro full of suspense and a drop that packs one serious punch, this is a track guaranteed to bring any dance floor to submission, absolutely heavyweight! Things couldn’t be more different on the flip as The Others show their soulful side with the beautiful ‘Splinter In My Soul’, which has been kept ultra exclusive until full release! Soft melodies and warm bass with a ‘Soul:R’ esq vibes, not your usual from these boys but a stunning piece of music none the less. In a nutshell this release has it all, quality stuff from the DP camp once again.

DP031 The Future – Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police yet again show their aim of bringing through new talent with the first single of newbie Trolley Snatcha. And don’t be fooled by the name, this kid doesn’t hang around Asda nicking trolley’s all day, instead he produces some seriously big tunes! Kicking things off is the brutal sounds of ‘The Future’, with the dubplate battering stamp of approval from the likes of Caspa, The Others, N-Type and co. A quite unsuspecting intro before one serious kick in the knackers of bassline pressure, this one is straight up murderation on any dance floor! The flip sees the slightly more upbeat ‘Scattah’, which once again is not for the faint hearted and found its way in to the sets of Skream and the usual big hitters of dubstep royalty. Gritty, dark and relentless bass with pounding beats are the order of the day, making this a tough debut 12” from this young bass jedi.

HF023 Sketch On Glass – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Mount Kimbie have carved out another superb foursome for Hotflush, and once again the music is just as comfortable in the hiphop or electronica realm as it is dubstep. Folksy melodies and ducking piped synths swoop over garage cheek and serrated bass in opener ‘Sketch On Glass’, before ‘Serged’ takes us deeper and darker with its anti-quantised beats, spring reverb drips and surgically-altered vocals. First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. What’s wrong with Rigas den Andre? He’s young, gifted and comes from a well-respected noble family and still his music speaks the ancient mournful language of the rocky Swedish archipelago. Because of this, RDA could be easily dubbed as the meister of melancholic electronic party music. Or “blue funk” as the exact term should be in my opinion. Take my word and dive in to the sea of emotions provided by RDA’s new album “Guilty Feet, No Rhythm”. I promise You confusion. Take a journey through the depressing digital funk of “No Heaven” or reach for the joyous synthesizer excursions of “W.A.S.P.” or “Go, Rangers, Go!”.And don’t forget to boogaloo to the epic title track which sounds like Timbaland and Björn Ulvaeus had a son. The only way I remember being able to express my feelings, as a child growing up in Canada, was to play on my old Casio keyboard. Even though I was so young, in those moments I realised music was always going to be the way I expressed myself.

After years of experimenting I realised I had to find my own sound, the most crucial part of being a musician. I don’t see the point of trying to imitate other people’s sound. I cant imagine ever feeling satisfied knowing it wasn’t really my expression, but me trying to impersonate someone else.

My real passion for music developed when I moved to New Zealand and I started my first band aged 11. Some of my fondest memories are of the lunchtime concerts I would put on with my friends, jamming on the guitar never felt better. I found my greatest influences including Radiohead, Massive Attack and the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Fast forward a few years and I discovered Drum and Bass, in particular the early sounds of Goldie, LTJ Bukem and Krust. I experimented with the art of mixing, a passion that has only grown. There’s something special about seeing a room full of people moving to music that I love. This pushed me into production, I figured why not try making the music that makes people move.

My initial plan for creating the album was to have no plan. I wanted to experiment with different techniques to see what I could create. This meant that the album was never going to be a straight up Drum and Bass LP.  My vision of the music progressed into wanting to make something people would want to listen to at home or on their headphones as they go to work in the mornings. At the same time it had to translate to the club environment.

I aimed to create music that doesn’t fit the usual mould of Drum and Bass, yet has its ties and influences from it. When listening to the LP in its entirety, I hope that listeners will be given an insight into the way I see my surroundings. Maybe people can relate, everyone shares certain similarities in the way they feel about their life and what makes them feel certain emotions.

The title ‘’Live for Never’’ came to me when I was thinking about how human nature has developed into people feeling they can get away with anything, that our lifestyles will remain constant no matter what we do. To me this is false, the world seems to be getting darker and darker by the day, people will realise this only once it’s too late.

Nothing lasts forever and nothing lives forever.

The collaborations with dBridge, Instra:mental and ASC were natural, we share similar insights to where we feel music should be heading and what we listen to. I feel privileged to be working with these guys. In my opinion it has given ‘’Live for Never’’ a wider appeal and it opened myself up to new musical possibilities.

The music on my debut album was written to express many things at once, some of it is happiness crossed with feelings of angst, love songs and regret, but you can be the judge of whether it moves you.

Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring  New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor.
d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few.
The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for.
Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and  atmospheres.
