Finish copy promo. Drumz of the Damned – Album Sampler 1 the first of three 12” taken from the album. The CD & Digital version of “Drumz of the Damned” will be released on Feb 15th. The perfect follow up to “Once Bitten Twice High”. It continues the deep journey into the world of Vampire Records. This time it has 22 exclusive tracks and 2 remixes. It will take you on a journey through many different moods and styles of Drum and Bass. From Light to Dark this album has everything! Once Again! Get bitten!!! The concept behind Vampire Records is the relation between the nocturnal behavior of Clubbers and Vampires. Vampire has constant evolution and is a platform for established artists and up and coming talent. The birth of the label was at the end of 2006. It has grown from strength to strength over the last couple of years. Vampire is still growing to this day but it has staying power in the world of Drum and Bass. It is up to its 10th single release and on April 1st 2009 it released its first label album “Once Bitten Twice High”. All releases on the label are still selling which proves that the music has shelf life and is non-disposable. It was very important to Phil Source at the birth of the label that it would have credibility with the old school, as well as the new breed of Drum and Bass fan.

With its two year anniversary just around the corner, Influenza brought a pair of powerhouse tunes to the table in a newcomer named Well Being. With releases on Red Mist Recordings and Focuz this artist looks to be a very promising addition to the Influenza roster. With his thick, soulful basslines and spine-chilling melodies, this guy might be one you’re gonna want to look out for in the next few years. Happy two year anniversary, Influenza! May the next year be blessed with blissful pads, sweeping basslines and vocals that are spine tingling! Both tracks are of epic proportions on this release, but are also very different. I Heart You is one deep stepper that features a soulful vocal with an equally deep bassline. Once the bass drops, don’t be surprised to see the dancefloor come alive! Storms by Stretlight is a lot more uptempo, but the bassline still rocks like none other. Expect these two to rattle your subs, and take you to other realms of dancefloor tranquility. KOKESHI002 Afterlife – Lung Kokeshi 12″ Vinyl
Kokeshi is the new label from Alley Cat, DJ/producer and co-director of ESP Agency with 12 years+ of music industry experience. Lung : Afterlife / Time – 19-year-old discovery Lung, from Cardiff has only been producing for a short time but has managed to make some of the most moving sounds this year. Having already featured on Mary Anne Hobbs’ BBCs Radio 1 Experimental show, he’s been slowly building a grassroots following through two local DJ residencies and online support (dubstepforum.com) and will undoubtedly reach a much bigger audience as his first release on Kokeshi takes flight. ‘Afterlife’ features layers of pads and effects with an eerie vocal and gut wrenching sub. Support on Radio 1, and various UK and international web and college radio stations. One for the floor, and one for the ipod. ‘Time’ offers a nod to old school d’n’b/jungle with its breaks and its piano riff, yet Lung still pulls off his signature emo-dub-tastic style with ease, making it sound new and fresh. Given the thumbs up by TRG and Vaccine.

DKX001 66/31 – binary sequence Dark Arx 12″ Vinyl
For its debut release, Dark Arx presents a 3-track single of gritty, emotive electronic music by Binary Sequence. Binary Sequence operates in the margins of UK dubstep channelling his influences through a painstaking process of deconstruction and distortion. The resulting tracks are gems of electronica, simultaneously beautiful and sonically fierce. Based in London, Binary Sequence has been playing, writing and producing music for 20 years. Before being swept up in the electronica of the late 90s, he spent years tackling the mind-bending harmonics and rhythms of 60s & 70s jazz as a saxophonist and pianist. While starting to write his own music, he began to explore the possibilities of electronic production and after much experimentation and refinement he has created a unique sound, combining dusty distortion with pristine production values. Sonic comparisons point to Pole, Dabrye and Burial – but Binary Sequence’s musicality is rooted in “Artificial Intelligence”-era electronica (Aphex Twin, Autechre, Black Dog).
DKX002 by Dark Arx will be released in March 2010.

Finish copy. Idle Hands is a vinyl based label operating out of Rooted Records in Bristol. The focus of the label is on raw and experimental dance floor tracks, in the best traditions of the UK underground. Hanuman and Atki2 make up Monkeysteak, and along with Dub Boy run the Steak House Records label. Over the past few years they have released 12″s on the Werk and Punch Drunk labels as well as recently featuring on Toddla T’s Fabric mix. Here in the west country Dub Boy runs the Bristol’s best bass music night, the acclaimed Ruffnek Diskotek and has recently been voted one of the cities favourite DJ’s, second only to Joker. This 12″ sees the crew delve into house music with satisfyingly bass heavy results. The A side is a chunky deep house track with a feel good carnival vibe. The B side is a unique slice of post-soca dance music, and also includes a remix from the internet’s funkiest man – Grievous Angel. MEDI026 My World – Mizz Beats Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Set to shine in 2010, Mizz Beats is the 22 year-old from Hackney (East London) who aided and abetted labelmate Silkie in the creation of one of this year’s certified bangers: ‘Purple Love’. Earning her stripes in the midst of the UK’s grime scene, she has already produced for the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Jammer and Lady Sovereign and she is undoubtedly one of the Anti Social Entertainment clique’s brightest prospects alongside Quest, Silkie, Kromestar, J5, Harry Craze and Heny G. Mizzy’s debut 12” on DEEP MEDi Musik showcases both her versatility and a lightness of touch that belies her years. ‘My World’ marries sloping half-step drums, offhand tom rolls and cleverly constructed synth work, conjuring a wickedly melodious groove. On the flip, ‘The Jester’ zips off in a different direction, carried by tougher, stripped-back drums and myriad 8-bit Gameboy bleeps, zaps and bumps. An altogether clubbier affair, but no less sophisticated, fans of Gemmy and Joker will undoubtedly approve.

3024006 Remixes 1/2 – Martyn 3024 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi-house community. First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape. Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies. Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.
An integral part of every 3024 release, Erosie once again blesses this release with his inimitable visual style switching up to a monochrome design this time around.

Super limited 10” of Stuck Various Production & Guido Remixes. Once upon a time there was a girl called Lauren. She lived in grassy, green Madison County, Tennessee where people are as sweet as the tea they make. She’d sing songs in her yard and run around with ballerinas, big kitty cats and her brothers all the livelong day. One winter evening Lauren decided she wanted a change of scenery. She wanted to leave her comfortable grasslands and start a joyride. She traveled far to La La land and danced with the faeries in Beverly Hills, all the while humming along to Bob Marley and playing pianos. Then Lauren ventured to Gotham City(out of a pure and deep love for Batman)to take to the stages of the great White Way as a long-haired bohemian. Now 6 years, 5 tattoos, 4 electric tea kettles, 3 cities, 2 tours and 1 Nord keyboard later, she’s in the bushes with the shepherds of London, singing of her homeland with the Lolo Army ready for the next round of life attacks. Lauren knows life is first-rate come what may. The End.

UM001 Natural Progression / In The Raw (D Bridge Remix) – Break / Mako and Andy Skopes Utopia Music 12″ Vinyl
Utopia Music is a new Bristol based drum & bass label founded by Mako, a DJ/producer with longstanding residencies at Dissident in Bristol, Spectrum in London and promoter of the infamous Utopia parties that have played host to guests including Randall, Fierce, Break, dBridge, Sabre, Lynx, Storm, Squire and more since starting in 2006. Opening the label’s musical account, Bristol resident and long-time Utopia supporter Break (Symmetry) steps up to deliver Natural Progression. On the reverse, dBridge (Exit Records) remixes a track created by label boss Mako and Andy Skopes (Good Looking) back in 2006 that remains unreleased despite a large amount of DJ support and an appearance on Fierce & Break’s cover-mount mix CD for ATM Magazine. DJ support: LTJ Bukem, Doc Scott, Fierce, Makoto, Bailey, Loxy, Total Science, SpectraSoul, DJ Lee, Flight, Instra:mental, Survival, Invaderz, Squire, Insiders and many more.

SCULT003 Swoop / Funk Me Hard – Sleeper Cell & Maztek Subculture 12″ Vinyl
Usually when we think of Italy we think of designer labels, opera, fast cars, fine art and fine foods. Italian based Subculture Records however are looking to add firin’ drum & bass to that list as they present their third release from label owner Maztek and UK producers Sleeper Cell. Batton down the hatches, things are about to get rowdy! Sci-fi sounds capes are rife as Sleeper Cell and Maztek team up for ‘Swoop’ to open up Scult003 with its rich textured break, eerie pads and industrial fx. After a tense dropout it’s time to move out as the super-sick bass rocks into the mix along with the rugged beats to provide a great example of the neurofunk sound. Fans of Noisia, Break and the like will lap this one up. Then Maztek goes it alone for ‘Funk Me Hard’, another excursion into the dark twisted world of techy d&b but with as the name suggests, a little more funk. Absolute carnage is what this one causes on the drop of filthy bass, warped vox and yet more production wizardry. Crank it up! DJ support so far from Ed Rush, State Of Mind, Chris Renegade, Optiv, Masheen, Axiom and more.

FALLOUT001 Phantom / Razzle-Dazzle – N.Phect Fall Out 12″ Vinyl
Fall Out’s debut release comes courtesy of Berlin based producer N.Phect. Phantom kicks off with rolling beats that are constantly developed throughout the track and added to with N.Phect’s unmistakeable brand of dirty funk. Unearthed is a new Punch Drunk affiliated label with a mission to reissue classic Bristollian sound system music remastered and cut LOUD to heavyweight 12″ vinyl for the first time. Bass is Maternal is the title track from the legendary original Smith & Mighty long player, eventually released on their own Three Stripe label in 1994 after lengthy delays. It is the manifestation of Smith & Mighty’s proto jungle vision which came to dominate the mid nineties. U Dub is a more traditional dubbed steppers rhythm building to a break beat / junglist crescendo. This first 12″ is fully dubstep compatible and has been recently revived by top selectors such as as Pinch, Shortstuff and Ben UFO. Both tracks essential for collectors and crucial to the Bristol sound system continuum jigsaw. More stone cold classics coming soon from the Unearthed series…

You haven’t worked in weeks. You’re unshaven and unkempt, your fridge is as bare as the dying light of a Sunday afternoon spent alone is bleak. Your rent is in arrears, and you dread the thought of more bills arriving through the door tomorrow. You spend more money on whiskey and weed than you spend on food, and have recently taken to shoplifting cheese from the supermarket. Barefoot, in your underwear still, you walk over to your record player, still faithfully spinning around and around and around since God knows what time this morning when the last people left… You reach for the record you walked into town to buy, pull it from it’s sleeve, still fresh despite a gathering storm of your greasy fingerprints clouding it like uncertainty clouds your future. For five and a half minutes you stand listening, eyes closed, and your troubles fall away. You flip the record over and, for a further five and a half minutes of pure joy, you hear that which few others ever will. THE FUTURE IS NAKED
ISP001 Running Away / Running Away (Guido Remix) – Wedge & Shadz If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl
Amazing packaging and music from Bristol based DJ & producer Wedge. Coming with a fresh take on the dubstep sound with the debut release on his new label If Symptoms Persist… Having hosted his successful radio show on Sub M for four years, this first release represents the fruitful hookup that have come from the how. With the best of musical and vocal talent passing through, the show has become a watchword for keeping up on the developments in the Bristol sound. Shadz is one of the many talented vocalists to have guested on the show, and before long Wedge invited him into the studio to collaborate. The result is a perfect combination of bass weight beats and soulful songwriting. Shadz uses his experience singing with many different projects (Joker – Keep your eye on the ball, Gemmy ‘The Croft” Seezy -Whatever the weather, TC – Untitled, Distorted Minds – Otherside) to great effect and comes up with an infectious lyric with a yearning, searching theme that suits Wedges deep bass pressure perfectly. ‘Running Away’ join the long line of great vocal tun to come out of Bristol, from Smith & Mighty, Tricky, & Portishead to Reprazent & Ben Westbeech. Running Away – Guido Remix On the flip, rising talent Guido (one of the Purple Three along with Joker and Gemmy) turns in a remix that sums up the excitement surrounding these producers. R&B, grime, & dubstep are thrown into the mix. a rinsing b line mixes with Guido’s trademark or he orchestration & musicality. Two prime examples of why people are looking to Bristol for fresh take of the Dubstep / GrimeGoodnessKnowsWhat sound With DJ’s as diverse as Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Mr Jm (1Xtra), The Foreign Beggars (Dented Record ), Footloose (1Xtra), Starkey (Planet Mu), and N-Type (Rinse FM) supporting this release, things are looking great for this new label.

This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. HENCH011 Ill – Chasing Shadows Hench 12″ Vinyl
This is the second 12” from recent HENCH signing, Chasing Shadows. The duo drop some serious pressure with these dark and dirty tunes straight from the heart of cutting-edge dubstep production. They’ve already received attention from the likes of: Mary Anne Hobbs, Pendulum, Plastician, N-Type, and Benga, so give them a listen and see what all the hype’s about!
A.ILL – ‘Ill’ builds from an eerie intro, with sultry guitar chords and stabbing beat, slowly winding up to an immense drop. With twisted beats, a punishing b-line, and sweeping atmospherics, this is iller than ‘Ill’ – the bass is so low it will probably make you sick! Grimy and growling, this is a tune that’s going to tear your immune system to shreds.
AA. AMIRAH – Flip over for another dark, deep, no-nonsense number with ‘Amirah’; with ominous atmospherics, a stabbing drumbeat, and oriental female vox, ‘Amirah’ has plenty of spice and a feisty kick! A helicopter chopper sound fades in and out of consciousness and adds to the mayhem. Powerful and intense, with pummelling subs, heavy bassline and a thumping drum kick, ‘Amirah’ is a tune that takes no prisoners!

So if you are into the grimy synth heavy side of things then better check this one out. Taz is on the case with the A side, Half Man Half Trout has been tearing up various floors for a while now. Meaty synths, a sexy melody, smooth delicate bassstings and a sharp drumbeat to nod your head to. A sure shot production that’ll leave and left tons of people wonder what that just was. It seems there aint no stopping the Taz because again he pulls it off on the flip with his other dancefloor smasher called 20 Red. 8 Bit bleeps and again a brutal squeezy synthline that’ll make your mouth water. Its like Snoop Dogg is floating on this orange cloud on his way to Jamaica to fill up his stash. A tune that finishes of this 12 inch in style and cements Taz as one to watch in the future! With releases coming up on Numbers (former Wireblock), Subway and a debut album on Rwina it shows that this is one producer we’ll hear alot more about! The classic TRG release. repressed and Re-released. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Subs bulge beneath the broken 2-step riddim and occasional warping midline, building nicely towards the killer switchups on the second drop.

DJ MAG – Dubstep Single Of The Month – “Some tunes really hit you in the soul receptors, and ‘Wa6″ by West Londoner and antisocialite Harry Craze blows dust off the 45, and moistens the eyeballs. If J Dilla made dubstep, you’d get the same feeling; sweet strings bounce off mood-drenched synths and circulate the warmth. BUILD001 Tongue Riddim – Baobinga & I.D Build 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Operating out of the same stable as Tectonic, Kapsize, Earwax and Caravan, Multiverse brings you a new label, Build, hitting the exciting space where Future Garage, Dubstep, UK Funky and all things Bass intersect. Headed up by renowned bassmusic ambassador Baobinga, known for his massive releases on Soul Jazz (with Tayo & Spyda) and Trouble & Bass (with Detroit’s DJ Nasty), as well as his wide-ranging DJ sets across the globe (including an appearance at Fabric’s 10th Birthday this October), the first release on Build sees Baobinga joined by regular partner in crime I.D. (Boka, Mata-Syn, Cool & Deadly). Tongue Riddim takes elements of Kuduru, percussive Dubstep and junglistic sub-bass pressure and combines them into a tightly-wound slice of dancefloor propulsion. On the flip, Roska – one of the main players in the UK Funky scene and a core DJ on Rinse FM – takes the tempo down but retains the sense of rhythmic intensity, rolling trademark tough Roska drums over a warm, yet menacing, bassline. Hypnotic without ever losing impact, the remix has already become a staple in his Rinse show. Early DJ support comes from Sinden, Martyn, Starkey, Buraka Som Sistema, Scratcha DVA, TRG, Shortstuff & Brackles and more.

DVA004 The Jelly Roll EP – Scratcha DVA Music 12″ Vinyl
Limited Edition Purple Vinyl. Scratcha DVA is not just the charismatic host of Rinse Fm’s breakfast show, he’s one of the UK’s most accomplished producers. An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90′s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. More recently Scratcha has collaborated with beacons of the UK Funky scene like Roska, Cooly G, D-Malice and more while still releasing grime anthems like ‘Nasty Nasty Nasty’ and ‘Bullet Ago Fly’. The Jelly Roll Ep has already gained support from Marcus Nasty, Geeneus, Joker, Kode 9, Cooly G, Sinden and more. Built around a super-synthetic bassline its title track sqirms and shakes around stinging snares whilst ‘Guro Triba’ is a little on the more conventional side of House & Funky. Remixes comes from True Tigers Sukh Knight, who gives Nasty Nasty Nasty the creeping dubstep treatment, whilst Funky don Roska gives it his unique “Kicks and Snares” midas touch.

HZN035 Lights Out – Isotone Horizons Music 12″ Vinyl
Horizons music has a habit of releasing music from the most exciting new artists in the scene. And “Isotone” is no exception. With forthcoming music on the likes of 31 and more in the pipe for Horizons, he’s going to be a name on everyone’s lips in the near future. This 12″ is a slab of really fine dancefloor pressure, and proves that Horizons can’t be pigeon holed as one sound and is a label that’s going to keep everyone second guessing. Hold on to your seats.. Citrus is back with another grand LP done by none other then Citrus veteran JADE. Stationed in Hungary and ready to rock the dancefloors with his VENOM LP. Check out this first piece of menacing dirt in the form of Phace remixing the ever so sick Cryptic. The Phace boys take this tune to another level and infuse their signature future funk vibes that we all know and love. No midrange mayhem but this this time their subbing the place up giving it the extra bit of depth it deserves. Flip it over for some disgusting vibes on “My World” Jade shows why he’s doing this LP in style by taking the jade sound up another notch. Feel the darkness engulf your ears while it stays simple but hits with deadly accuracy.

LS008 ‘SPL’ Album Sampler – SPL Lost Soul Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Lost Soul is the HQ of SPL aka Sam Pool. A producer unlike the most producers who are daring themselves to this sound. He has proven himself as a master in Dnb, Dubstep and even Hardcore and now its time to unleash Mr Pools debut album likewise dubbed SPL. For the first sampler its up to wipeout to clear the floors of any fainted hearted who dares to try and think they can handle it.. The hefty techno vibes roll deep inside this track while the breakdown stirs up things for the dubstep crew. A perfect production for those crossover sets. All Over is something different and isnt one of the lightest tunes to handle aswell. SPL infuses the jungle vibes into this one and adds his own melancholic sounds to it to give it that grunge edge thats signature for any SPL track.

NASCA004 Spider – Body & Soul / Fourward Nasca Records 12″ Vinyl
BODY&SOUL, best known for their productions on Viper Recordings and Bad Company, need no further introduction. FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. Their first digital releases on Subsonik Sound were all regulars at Beatport Top 10 sales chart for weeks, competing with established artists´ tracks by Chase&Status and Noisia. BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD decided to join forces just recently and the feedback on their work so far couldn’t prove any more, that this was an excellent decision. Ed Rush & Optical have already picked up two of their tunes for their mighty Virus Recordings Imprint. In the meantime we have the first Vinyl release of BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD´s mastercraft on Nasca Records.
A: SPIDER – This tune starts off with gentle and warm electro influenced chords and a spooky speech sample layered on top of it, contrasted with mean and nasty reece bassline edits in the breakdown, followed be a smashing amen drop that is specifically designed to do serious damage to any dancefloor worldwide.
A: PURE – Pure shows the more musical side of things, combining deep string moods with cheeky neurofunk bassline edits in a way you might not have heard before. With this tune the boys demonstrate that their craft has come a long way, production quality is second to none.

The menacing breakdown sounds so devastating that no one dares to stand in its way. Flip it over for Proktah & Future Signal. A combination we never seen before yet their tune Insecticide is heavier then a 400 ton container. Disturbed’s evil twin brother Mentally Disturbed is uprocking another smasher of a release. This time we see Machine Code (aka Current Value & Dean Rodell) rattling up some destructive beats like only these 2 daredevils can. The A side Inductance is one for the warehouse sets. Industrial sounds & factory breaks haunt this track like the souls of 2000 men. A track that’s got Mentally Disturbed written all over it. Nebular is some what more sci fi. Yet still keeps the warehouse vibes alive. Switching from amen vibes to heavy roller business like its nothing.
New Dubstep CD

SWAMPCD001 One Of Us – Kryptic Minds Swamp 81 CD
Back in May of 2009, Blackdown posted an in-depth interview with Kryptic Minds and Loefah, breaking down how Loefah started his Swamp81 They spoke at length about the parallels between DnB and dubstep, especially from a label-sound point. Well, at the end of this month, you can own what’s sure to be one of the scene’s more captivating releases to date. What I want to push with Swamp 81 is the gap that isn’t really being represented anymore. The roller, the halfstep… spacious.” What Loefah heard in those first few Kryptic Minds beats is edgy, rolling, stripped back spacious dubstep that was spectacularly well made and also had its own identity– emotive, organic in places, very junglist in spirit– unlike the vast number of producers who tried to clone his sound in 2006, and failed. The first fruits of the partnership are Kryptic Mind’s “One of Us”, a deadly 12″ that encapsulates producers who understand the difference between edgy and too angry; that restraint often has more impact than chaotic release. This deft understanding of the tensions and contradictions buried within dubstep, and how you use them is played out yet further on their new album, “I’m thinking Wax Doctor, Doc Scott, Goldie– that kind of thing. It’s that transitional phase between Reinforced and Headz that is in my heart” explains Loefah. “That’s what I’d like to do with Swamp. And I don’t want it to be labelled as ‘the halfstep label.’ I want it to have that kind of tunnel vision Metalheadz had in 1996, that kind of ‘we’re going this way. I’m not watching what you’re doing, I’m not watching what you’re doing– I’m going straight ahead.’” In that spirit, Kryptic Minds’ One of Us zooms in on edgy 140bpm halfstep, forcing the listener into a headspace where perfectly placed details come into vivid focus, like the hyper-real intensity of night adrenalin. Everything is tautly coiled, as if priming the listener for a flight-or-fight reflex. The tension is barely unleashed throughout the album. “To me the album– and this may be really gushy,” enthuses Loefah, “it’s like a night out. Leaving the house or wherever you are,
going through the night and the last track is morning. The sun’s come up and it’s time for bed.” “I think the Kryptic Minds album and the 12″,” concludes Loefah, “it’s just making a bit of a statement. We’re saying ‘you know what? It’s not this, it’s not that, we’re right in the middle and we’re headstrong with it.

New Dubstep Releases

BASSHEAD003 Killing Time – Noah D & Einstein Basshead Music 12″ Vinyl
Hailing from Portland, Oregon Noah D has already established his name as a Drum & Bass producer with numerous releases on labels such as Renegade Recordings and Dieselboy’s Human Imprint. More recently he has been making noise in the dubstep scene since dropping Examination of Time with Babylon System on Argon in 2008. Since then his profile and workflow have increased and he has numerous releases on labels such as Subway, Earwax, + Thought and many more. After sending us the original instrumental of Killing Time Noah explained he was interested in working with Dancehall artists in Jamaica and Einstein’s name was mentioned. We were into the idea so Einstein’s manager was aproached and he agreed to work with us on the project. After long negotiations Einstein got into the studio in Kingston, Jamacia and layed down the vocals then sent them back to Noah who added the finishing touches creating a dancefloor monster fusing Einstein’s aggressive vocals and Noah’s crisp production and deep bass. Once that was done we called in one of the drum and bass scenes most popular producers “Break” to perform remix duties. He did Killing Time justice and his heavyweight remix has been a favourite of dj’s such as Andy C, Dj Marky and Friction. Our aim at Basshead Music is to amalgamte styles and cultures into musical forms. Expect the unexpected

SUBWAY011EP Hypnotic Elements EP – Noah D Subway 12″ Vinyl x 2
Noah D steps up for his return on Subway and what a return it is.. Hypnotic Elements EP is title of his 5 track double pack and it’s the one everybody has been waiting for! The A side is the one and only Seeeriousss thats being cained by allmost every bigshot in the game. No cheesy buisness but straight up ghetto sounds are filling the speakers up and destroying it bit by bit by bit! Turn it over for another big bad tune called Twister.. Like a hurricane this riddim explodes into a whirlwind of bass and sub and sucks in anything that comes across it.. again not for the fainted hearted cause Noah D is ON this! Disc 2 brings back one of Subway’s Biggest bangers in a Straight Jacket VIP Style.. Noah D VIP’s this tremendous tune and it gets the extra flow and strech it deserves. Once this one drops you know there isnt no turning back anymore. Turn it over for 2 different takes on Noah D’s sound. first one its Got U Now a dubbed out stomper wich sees Noah flexing over other sounds as he’s best known for! The second tune holds Vibrationz.. and there is nothing more to say about this tune as it does exactly what it says.. SUB + SUB + SUB.. dont let any beers stand in front of a speaker when this one plays cause youll see yourself running toward the bar to get a new one before you know it!
After the success of R8004 produced by RSD, R8 Records are back with another new producer and the return of label owner Rogue State. The Sheffield-Germany connection has never been stronger!
ROGUE STATE – LOGICAL REGRESSION – Another meaty slab of Rogue’s own niche influenced dubstep style, this track was influenced by the mighty LTJ Bukem. Rogue is on top form here with depth and emotion created through the synthy intro whilst the tearout drop will get anyone moving.
TWISTED – INFECT – Hailing from Germany and part of the Dutty Dubs crew, Twisted is starting to make real impact on the international scene. The super slick mixdown is what first attracted us to him but it was this phenomenally heavy weight track that made us decide to release Twisted. Bass face time!

Vinyl copies of EX7001, Excision – ‘Yin Yang’, sold out in a matter of weeks, while the digital release has been sitting pretty at the top of the Beatport dubstep chart ever since it was dropped. Now, following on from their immense first 12”, EX7 is back with an even more impressive pair of dance floor killers. EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. The A side, ‘Swagga’, was a feature in Excision’s DJ sets on his recent UK tour as sweaty crowds of teenagers rushed the decks shouting “Play Swagga!” in anticipation of its filthy bassline combinations (we kid you not, we feared for our lives…). Not only that, but ‘Swagga’ is the only non-Rusko track that Rusko’s been battering on all his recent radio mixes; for proof just check out his recent Breezeblock mix for BBC Radio 1. Teaming up with fellow Canadian, Datsik, once again on the flip, Excision creates another mechanoid-influenced stomper that hails the beginning of Armageddon. Monster bass and super-hard beats are what ‘Invaderz’ is all about, another piece of heavy artillery for Excision & Datsik’s sonic armoury. **Watch out for Excision & Datsik remixes for CTRL-Z & The Freestylers and Wu Tang Clan hitting the streets soon.**

One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor. Both tracks are tried and tested dancefloor destroyers – clubs everywhere will be eternally grateful. Sick. (Words courtesy of Boomkat)

New D ‘n’ B Releases

31R038 Quality Not Quantity Vol. 1 – Various Artist 31 Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
When a label such as 31 records releases a record it’s always worth taking note & this EP delivers. Calibre’s “Intro” finally surfaces, and it does what it says on the tin , an awesome intro track. “This is real” by Furney is an excellent feel good roller, while Zero T’s “Damascus” is some summertime business! Finally, Aaron Jay & that man Lynx combine for a minimal dubbed out journey entitled “Wait for me”, one for the smokers. DJ support from Marcus Intalex, Doc Scott, Flight, Calibre & dBridge..

REDSEAL003 Ringtone – Calibre Samurai Red Seal 12″ Vinyl
Full colour artwork, and now pressed on 180 gram black vinyl. Drum & Bass music is constantly changing, the ebbs and flows constantly revealing new artists and new takes on this teenage musical phenomenon. There are very few artists today whose name consistently holds its reputation for quality, timeless music. One name that has lead the way for all others to follow for many years now is Calibre. The mere mention of a new Calibre tune spreads gasps of anticipation amongst those who have come to appreciate the genius craftsmanship that has become the Calibre work ethic. To not only be this damn good, but to also be as prolific as this man is, Drum and Bass has truly been blessed with a steady flow of emotionally charged, and inherently deep music from the core of his soul. And so it is with great pride that we present to you two further slices of sonic bliss to add to your treasured collection of Calibre music. ‘Ringtone’ dons the mask and snorkel style and takes you deep into the realms of bass music, while ‘Jackoff’ is a distinct departure from his usual style and has been lighting up dancefloors for all those lucky enough to have advance copies. DJ support has been supplied by every person we have passed these tunes onto. It was decided early on to make this release look as beautiful as it sounds with full colour artwork, and pressings on 180 gram black vinyl.

CONTAM005 Toxic EP – Various Artists Contaminated Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
After a short break Contaminated are back with their 5th release. Toxic EP, aimed strictly at the dance floor, this EP features remixes from bad boys SPL and Nocturnal of two past Contaminated tracks and two fresh tracks from the talented up and coming French Duo Katharsys. A. Masheen & Sleeper Cell – Physical Reality – (SPL’s Meltdown Mix) SPL steps up for the remix duty of the very first release on Contaminated. Sticking firmly to the sound of the original roller SPL adds his own touch of magic with pounding drums and full on dirtiness. B. Katharsys – Night Terror Deep synths rolling out through the intro soon turn day into night where the terror is unleashed in the form of rip roaring basslines and tough rolling beats. Don’t turn out the lights at night as the Night Terror demon is out there! C. Nphonix – Victimology (Nocturnal Remix) Hitting your bass bins hard and taking your brain victim comes Nocturnal’s retake on this already disgusting track from Nphonix. Super sub bass and crisp cutting beats will not disappoint the deeper heads on this one. D. Katharsys – Jupiter Flying outer space on a truly epic journey towards the planets that surround us you are soon landing smack bang on Jupiter. Tough synth stabs, hard punching subs and extreme beats kick you hard in the teeth.
MUNK001 Evah – Jonny L Munk Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Jonny L’s back with his new imprint Munk Recordings. ‘Evah’ is a old school piano rave meets turbo charged D&B. A peak moment in the sets of Annie Mac, High Contrast, Sub Focus and Bryan Gee for months. In contrast is ‘Microdaze’ a blissed out deep roller. Fabio, Marcus Intalex, Doc Scott & Presha has been supporting. A perfectly balanced 12” from one of Britain’s dance music legends. If it sounds good, it is good!
Yet again, SYNTAX is happy to offer another special release of dancefloor killers. This time around, the tunes are produced by San Paolo’s wonderboy – Bungle. On the A side, Bungle delivers a truly beautiful trancey epic tune, entitled Move on. For the flip, he flexes his skills and puts his magic touch remixing State of Mind’s rolling Floor 14, released in 2008, coming with a fresh and deep take on the tune, with a powerful bassline and ghetto beats!

SHB007 Non Fiction / The Mirage – Cern / Duo Infernale Shady Brain 12″ Vinyl
A: Cern, ‘Non Fiction’ Without a doubt Cern from New Zealand is one of the most promising artists the current Drum and Bass scene has to offer. Collaborations with like minded artists such as dBridge, Loxy, Phace and Misanthrop, Logistics, and Bulletproof speak for themselves. Cern’s shadybrain debut ‘Non Fiction’ underlines what he is about, providing a sick breakbeat groove right from the beginning just to develop into a true techfunk influenced subbass monster. AA: Duo Infernale, ‘The Mirage’ Releasing tunes on labels such as Soul:r, Timeless Recordings, Dispatch, as well as Horizons and being featured on Marcus Intalex’ top selling Fabric Live CD, Duo Infernale are two of the most successfull Drum and Bass artists to break through from Germany. With their new release ‘The Mirage’ on shadybrain, they take their work to another level. Futuristc and techno influenced sounscapes meet an incredible deepness all covered up by a hypnotizing drumgroove.

SUBS007 Logic Gate – Machine Code Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl
Subsistenz is back once again with another 1st for the dnb scene, bringing two peak-time floor peddlers from the freshest collaboration to come out of the subdivision camp – Machine Code aka Current Value & Dean Rodell – Neither of these two producers need introductions to any of the scenes they are planning to manipulate as these two heavy weights of the underground have been outputting quality release after release for over 20 years between them. Now after a few months of working the machines at the Subdivision Studio in Berlin, the stock piled arsenal is ready to be broadcast and inflicted upon the minions. The Machine Code project formed out of a true respect and passion for Techno-orientated dance music and has been personified in this bar-raising first broadcast – Logic Gate … A. Logic Gate is kick-started with Mechanisms, a full-on techno assault that builds from a spine-chilling, vocal-fused pad that is gradually manipulated around a rhythm that pounds the living life out of its tonal timbres. The subtle manipulations in sound are brought to a head when the mechanisms turn to a 4/4-driven bass stomp, giving all insundry a life line to clasp onto … B. Thermal Stress doesn’t let up in Logic Gates mission to remove charred brain cells from its listeners’ dusty caverns. A brutal attack
of constant clinical pressure builds and binds sound scapes to a point of pure audio hedonism. With no remorse for the cranked and perverted – Machine Codes infiltrating has begun – - – Lock Up Your Synths !!!

NZ010 Stone Cold Killa – Soul Intent Samurai Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Samurai Music celebrates it’s 10th release by taking apart the dancefloor with 2 surefire aural bombs from Nottinghams’ Soul Intent. ‘Stone Cold Killa’ grinds in with cavernous heavy breakbeats, while the tone of impending carnage is set with ice cold ambience. A brief pause for the “..you’re a Stone Cold Killer” vocal before the hideously twisted bass riff unwinds itself into a drop that has been known to evacuate glassware from surrounding surfaces in clubs with systems capable of facilitating this tunes full power. The ultimate opening tune we suggest you save this piece of dangerous weaponry for situations that call for the heaviest artillery possible. ‘Conflict’ recalls golden moments in the tech step era with militant stepping breaks and a savagely warped bassline that bounces around with gleeful menace. It’s blatantly obvious that Mr Soul Intent was on a serious mission of hurting dancefloors in the days these two bass heavy monsters were created. We are proud to celebrate our 10th release by sharing their might with the rest of the planet. DJ’s that saw the need to draw for true power have been people like Klute, State Of Mind, Bailey, Eveson, Randall, Kasra, Cern, Phobia, Bulletproof and many more besides…

NONPLUS002 Watching You – Instra:mental Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Instra:mental present the second release from their Nonplus imprint after the hugely successful Nonplus 001 ‘Wonder Where’ / ‘No Future’. This release consists of two tracks from Instra:mental. Again, the A side contains the vocal talent of frequent collaborator dBridge, and for the B side they switch up the style into what can only be described as Dub Techno. a) Instra:mental ‘Watching You’ stands up to the quality levels set by Nonplus 001 and continues the fusion of original vocals, Detroit influenced chords and their trademark tight percussion. Ice-cold robotic vocals and heart-warming chord stabs will make the hairs on your neck stand on end listen after listen. This tune is a timeless piece of music that no amount of jargon can justifiably explain. If you like the recent output from these guys then you will love this tune. aa) Instra:mental ‘Tramma’ is a 4/4 offering made of elements from Dub, Techno and DnB but is hard to pigeonhole into any particular genre. For descriptive purposes well call it dub techno. Once again we can hear their influences from all things electronic, and here we have an example of the variance that we expect from Nonplus and a glimpse of the vision that Instra:mental have for the future of this label.

EXIT016 Melodies feat Mike Knight – Spectrasoul Exit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Spectrasoul provide their debut single on Exit Records, which consists of two tracks written especially for the label. These two producers have proved their talent time and time again with a string of releases over the past two years and are definitely ones to watch in 2009/10. ‘Melodies’ is a clever combination of melancholic synth samples, used courtesy of legendary minimal electronica producers Isan, featuring the vocal talents of up and coming American RnB singer Mike Knight. An unconventional beat pattern makes this track stand out from the crowd and provides a refreshing break on the dancefloor. ‘Insignia’ comes with similar vibes on the B side, starting off with emotive pads and vocal snippets, dropping with low down sub stabs over another unconventional but highly effective beat. Both tracks have had support on the highly acclaimed autonomic podcasts (www.clubautonomic.com) and are receiving heavy rotation from DJs such as dBridge, Instramental and Dubstep pioneer DJ Skream, which highlights the versatility of these tracks and the potential to cross into Dj sets from different genres.

SUBTLE003EP Some Shit Saaink – Macc & dgoHn Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy. Time to enter the insane, weird, drum-centric world of Macc & dgoHn as the Subtle Audio camp proudly delivers its first artist-album by this pair of not altogether insane East Londoners.Subtle Audio has been pushing Drum & Bass with a slighly different slant for over four years now and this album could well be presented as their mission statement, it sums up the distinctive sound of the label perfectly. Macc & dgoHn favour a breakbeat driven style and they incorporate their beats into ever shifting cinematic arrangements brim full of attitude and experimentation. Individually, their sounds have travelled far beyond the Drum & Bass microcosm and their works have been aired by the likes of Zane Lowe and Mary Anne Hobbs on BBC Radio 1. Aphex Twin is also an admirer and his festival playlists have contained Macc or dgoHn on more than one occasion. Now they unleash a volley of material from their collaborative archive which is set to disarm critics who thought Drum & Bass had run out of rhythms, arrangements and silly album titles. No fear on that, “Some Shit Saaink” is here!

New Dubstep CD

RAMP022CD One Foot Ahead Of The Other – Zomby Ramp Recordings CD
Once upon a time, there was a band called The Cure, who had a front man named Robert Smith. Robert was an emotional being, who was always looking to test his boundaries and search out new experiences. After touring the Germany in the early 80’s with his band of eyeliner encrusted over-emotional Goth-men, Robert began a non-sexual but intensely intimate relationship with Florian Schneider, front man of Electro forefathers, Kraftwerk. The unlikely couple decided to experiment with the then new science of gene splicing. After a few horrific failed attempts, they finally managed to successfully cross their DNA into the vessel of a baby boy. Months past, and it became disturbingly apparent that they two men, who at the time were at the peaks of their careers, had created a being of pure evil. They decided to enlist the help of the 4’2 purple sex-pest Prince to drown the young baby in a sea of colours and tears, and try as hard as they can to move on with their lives alone, ever trying to forget the horrific experiences the child had graced upon their lives. For many years, the baby’s soul circled the earth, crying pixels and watching women get undressed in locker rooms and stuff, for he is just a soul, and invisible to the human eye, and can get away with that kind of thing. The child found out there was a way to come back from the dead in some kind of Hellraiser type puzzle themed ritual, and hark, the boy (who was now a man) did indeed rise from the dead, and yes, he did once again walk the earth with the sole intent of wrong-doing.
New Dubstep Releases

MEDI015 Dark Path – Goth Trad Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Sickness from Goth-Trad on Mala’s label, with perhaps his best twelve to date. ‘Dark Path’ on the A is an exercise in dub technology, thick slabs of bass overlaid with eastern melodies and mad FX. Percussion and snares are treated with heavy delays, pinging around like auditory hallucinations, building a framework upon which to hang the wistful chords and gentle flute topline. The flip is just as involving, stabbing wind samples and off-kilter hats readying you for sub undulations, runnin beats and mental bendy midrange noises. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

ARGLP02_2 The Incredible Adventures Of Kenzolika & Quetzalcoatl Among The Air Castles Part2 – Blasta Argon Records 12″ Vinyl
Blasta met Kenzolika, Kyiv’s dubstep princess, in November 2008. It all started with a coincidence – the owls were falling, and they keep falling now. Blasta is a musician based in Vaska, St. Petersburg, Russia. Each tune on the album is filled with pure sweet emotions. Feel the tension in “Your Dub Delay”, a poignant cosmic dubstep anthem with vocals by Blasta. It doesn’t matter if you are drinking the “Black Muscatel” wine, drifting through the clouds inside a “Zeppelin Nacelle”, or just chilling and dancing slowly with beautiful girls inside the “Cosmic Lounge”. “This LP is something that has popped up from nowhere and is to be one of the best dance album’s I’ve heard in years, tracks like ‘Cosmic Lounge’ & ‘Black Muscatel’ are strong power plays from myself in the clubs and have had people singing with joy to the melodies or clenching their hearts with emotion – sumthing you don’t see in the clubs these days anymore due to the lack of good music played by the top DJs. Other tempo’s on the album shows the talent that Blasta really has with music making…….This album WILL be remembered for years to come!!!!!!” – Heny G

IME012 Hades – Gatekeeper Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Immerse cuts a unique groove these days, releasing original, leftfield music, often dark and uplifting simultaneously. This new Gatekeeper plate falls on the darker side of the fence, but that’s no bad thing. ‘Hades’ is a moody skulker – triangles, pads and trickling sound FX giving way to a thumping bass’n’drum workout, dotted with delayed beeps and cutup shouted warnings. Flipside, the Keeper’s original Skull Disco collab ‘Tomb’ gets a rework, the insistent midrange line slotted into a rock-hard selection ofmilitant breaks, subterranean bass and dystopian mechanical noise.
HEK004 Air & Lack Thereof – James Blake Hemlock Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Hemlock proudly introduce the debut release for James Blake; South London producer, keyboardist and live vocalist for Mount Kimbie (Hot Flush). Having grown up “Playing along to Stevie Wonder ‘til the early hours and falling asleep to Art Tatum and Erroll Garner” James’s music comes saturated with fresh ideas. He comes correct for Hemlock 004 with two brilliantly off-kilter, blues and funk inflected bombs. The perfect introduction to his distinct sound. All at once fast, slow, melodic and heavy, and with its feet rooted firmly in the dance, a. Air & Lack Thereof is a beautifully wrong and virulently catchy concoction of razor-sharp beats, bluesy vocal snippets, screaming p-funk synths and distortion-a-plenty that all adds up to so much more than the sum of it’s parts. b. Sparing the Horses goes for a darker, more twisted sonic palette. Layers of reversed horns, deep morphing subs and those distinct vocals again, playing over galloping polyrythmic beats for another unique interpretation of the dubstep sound. Worldwide support coming from Joe Nice & Dave Q Instra:mental, Distance, Pangaea, TRG, Ramadanman, Ben UFO, Rob da Bank.

IME013 Elephants – October Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine
