STHoldings: End of year review 2011

Posted 21 December 2011 | By | Categories: news, reviews, tracks, video | No Comments

So that’s another year almost done and with it come the inevitable top this, top that lists. Here are details of how  STHoldings distributed labels/artists featured in the end of year lists from around the web.

RA Poll: Top 50 tracks of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1422

46. Maurice Donovan - Babeh [SSSSS]
The man formerly known as Ramadan cuts up a classic into something resembling house.

22. Peverelist - Dance Til the Police Come [Hessle Audio]
Jungle-inspired-swinging post-dubstep—or in other words, a Bristol-based genius at the top of his game.

19. Scuba - Adrenalin [Hotflush]
A lot of 2011′s big tracks inspired as much bickering as they did dancefloor mayhem, and Scuba’s only single under his usual moniker was no different. Following in his new, looser, and housier direction, “Adrenalin” is eight minutes of rigid repetition, incessantly catchy basslines and a strobing vocal sample. But the song’s lopsided progression is the important part, because three minutes in it melts away into one of the year’s most decadent breakdowns, several minutes of building synth washes and whooshes that unashamedly ascend to the highest of the gurning trance heavens. The song’s title might imply a certain energy, but we all know there’s a different chemical driving this one.

17. Pangaea - Hex [Hemlock]
Pangaea’s “Hex” was perfectly fine for the first 86 seconds. Pretty swell even. A bit of rhythmic trickery, a nice organic bed for it all to sit on. Then there was this: “Buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh buh kut be booooooooooooy be boooooOOOOOOOoy.” It was at that moment that “Hex” became one of the most exciting songs we’d heard all year. That Kevin McAuley had further tricks up his sleeve later on is icing on the cake of course, but it’s also why we kept coming back to it throughout the year.

10. Unknown Artist - Sicko Cell [Swamp 81]
Be honest: When you finally heard “Sicko Cell” in full, you were a little bit underwhelmed. (If you even bothered to track it down at all.) There’s not much to say about the rhythm. There’s hardly a drop. Even the melody—if you can call the atmospheres a full-fledged melody—don’t inspire much poetry. There is a vocal, though. Perhaps you remember? It’s the one about cocaine powder. The one that drove you mad in a club this year trying to figure out where it was from. The one that Loefah, Oneman and others couldn’t stop playing. The one that landed this tune in our top 10 tracks of the year.

01. Blawan - Getting Me Down [White Label]
The whole story behind “Getting Me Down” is a bit corny really. I went out on New Years Eve—like everyone else does, and I did the whole thing, had a good time, left quite early and came back home and kind of just sat at my computer all night/morning. I had these disco loops I had been working on that I wasn’t really doing much with, and I started messing around with the a cappella and then something just clicked. I did it in about four hours and kind of forgot about it.
This one dropped off the radar for me a little bit, because I actually thought it was one of the weirder things I had written. I never really grasped the catchy vocal properly until I put it into context. A few guys said, “Yeah, I really like that tune,” but nothing more than anything else I sent before. The first person to get anything from me is usually Ben UFO. Ben gave it the first play on Rinse FM, and somebody then ripped it from the radio stream and uploaded it to YouTube—something that seems happen all the time now. That played an integral part of getting the tune in people’s heads really.
I’d been playing the tune out a lot, and it had got an OK reaction. I mean, I had always thought of it as filler for a set anyway. But once the YouTube clip was up, a lot of people in clubs knew what it was, even though it was only three or so weeks after I had finished making it. It’s really strange how things move so fast.

19. Instra:mental - Resolution 653 [NonPlus+]
The problem with Instra:mental? They release too much good music. “Problem” is the wrong word, but such has been the standard of Alex Green and Damon Kirkham’s output these past couple of years it’s become tough to ruminate on each new offering in isolation, fully appreciating the true extent of its merits. They’ve spoilt us, basically—and none more so than on their debut album, Resolution 653. Barely pausing for a fag break across its 13 tracks, the pair coaxed jaw-clenching amounts of warmth and grit out of their machines, coming off like the natural heirs to Drexciya’s electro throne.

RA Poll: Top 20 compilations of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1424

20. Various Artists - Mosaic Vol. 1 [Exit]
A lot of the tunes on Mosaic were earmarked as singles for Exit. But it became really clear that I wasn’t going to have the schedule to get everything out, so a compilation seemed like a good idea. In the same way as the [Autonomic] podcast, putting this music together served as a platform for people to get their heads around it. If the tracks are all in dribs and drabs it sort of goes unnoticed. I think compilations and the podcast kind of helped identify this group of artists producing this music. I suppose that’s where the title Autonomic came from. It’s funny that it became a genre name sort of, because that was never the intent.

14. Various Artists - Back & 4th [Hotflush]
I wasn’t directly involved in the process of choosing tracks for Back & 4th, but the goal was to present a gradual evolution of the label’s sound over the last few years. It was also an opportunity to bring in a few newcomers who provided a clear manifestation of that same evolution, with Roska, Boddika, dBridge, and FaltyDL adding their own flavors to the mix. I was also glad that Scuba picked up my own track, “Axis.” It’s the first one I made that I was really satisfied with. My favorite track on the compilation, though, was Boxcutter’s “LOADtime.” He’s always been really inspiring to me, as a veteran producer whose talent and skill really set him apart. – Incyde, Label Manager

10. Various Artists - 116 & Rising  [Hessle Audio]
We had the idea for the compilation at the end of 2010 and started putting the wheels in motion soon after that. We approached some people we hadn’t worked with before as well as asking those we had if they were interested in the concept too. Luckily for us, everybody was. In terms of the name, the three of us were on the train coming back from our distributors after talking about the project, thinking of titles. I’d been re-listening to Experience by the Prodigy a week or two earlier and one of the tracks on there is called “Everybody in the Place (155 & Rising).” So 116 & Rising (referring to the BPM of the slowest track in the comp) is a bit of a joke, but at the same time summarises the project and a lot of what we’re about nicely.

RA Poll: Top 20 labels of 2011

http://www.residentadvisor.net/feature.aspx?1421

20. NonPlus+
Nonplus+ heads Alex Green and Damon Kirkham simply claim to release what they like—no matter the genre. That’s what everyone says…until the distributor steps in. Luckily for us, Green and Kirkham didn’t get the memo, and spent the year reaffirming their pan-genre approach by putting Actress’ blurry electronica next to Lowtec’s tired house, and Boddika’s breezin’ electro up against the Neil Landstrumm and JD Twitch collab Salsa Apocalypso. Add Instra:mental’s own brutal and beautiful Resolution 653 to the mix, and you have yourself a wonderful and confusing year

19. Idle Hands
Saunter down Stokes Croft in Bristol with some cash in your pocket and you’ll likely end up trawling the racks of Idle Hands. The label of the same name was started up in 2009 while Chris Farrell was still employed a bit further up the street by the erstwhile Rooted Records. Much like the stock in both these stores, the label hasn’t been wedded to any one genre. In 2011 that’s meant an impeccable string of singles from artists like AnD, Kowton, Kevin McPhee, Szare and Outboxx which have run the gamut between charcoal techno and jazzy house.

05. Hotflush
With a hefty label compilation occupying the first quarter of the year and a busy 2010 behind him, it could have been a year of consolidation for Scuba’s Hotflush. Instead, the imprint pushed forward with new talents George FitzGerald, Braille) and old Paul Woolford & Psycatron). Looking over the names that released on Hotflush in retrospect, and things seem obvious. (Err… of course Sepalcure and Sigha go together!) But it speaks to the platform that Scuba has created that artists from house, techno and bass music even think to send him tracks—and that he finds a way to work all of them into his DJ sets.

94. Sepalcure “Pencil Pimp” [Hotflush]
As Sepalcure, Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma slid in right before the whistle to remind us that electronic music devices can do more than evocatively sputter and fritz. “Pencil Pimp” whirls on a machine-lathed spindle of Chicago footwork, capturing a feeling of curtailed tension and lurking danger with its soulful vocal clips and warm synth pads. There are no gestures of rebellion or subversion, only an argument for well-made music at a time when it might seem besieged. “Pencil Pimp” demonstrates why we feel so comfortable breaking the mold: We know someone will come along who feels passionate enough to cast it again, tempered even stronger. –Brian Howe

Sepalcure – Pencil Pimp / I’m Alright (album single) by Hotflush

86. Blawan “Getting Me Down” [self-released]
Blawan first drew attention with tracks that wielded wild drums like a toddler banging on household objects, but his most powerful moment this year came when he reined in those tendencies for a straightforward house thumper.  A lot of the impact in “Getting Me Down” comes fromthat Brandy vocal, squeezed and wedged into a galloping beat that recontextualizes the R&B slow-jam original as a sugary, hyped-up rush that’s dangerously contagious. Released discreetly after months of dubplate domination, the track’s landing was titanic: it was impossible to walk around record stores in London in May without hearing it blaring from speakers, or go to a club night without it being rinsed at least once. For the first half of the year, “Getting Me Down” was an event, and listening back to it at year’s end, it’s easy to see why. So few tracks combined candyfloss rave, UK garage hysteria, and dubby dread (check the growling basslines) into something that sounded so universal yet so subversive, helping to kick off a new impulse in the bass music world that was all about house. –Andrew Ryce

47. Sepalcure ‘Sepalcure’ [Hotflush]
In an interview with The Guardian last month, Hotflush boss Scuba named “Outside”, the closing song from bass music duo Sepalcure’s self-titled debut LP, as the song he would want to open his next DJ set with. It’s a strange choice for a set opener– “Outside” is beatless, essentially four minutes of drone and clipped voices– but then again, not much about Sepalcure makes sense in the constant forward-thinking climate of bass music circa 2011. As an album, it doesn’t really do anything new, and a few of the signifiers that Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma plunder onSepalcure were, to some, reaching their expiration dates– specifically, the use of pitched vocals that Stewart liberally splayed on his album this year as Machinedrum, Room(s). Part of what makes Sepalcure such a deeply enjoyable listen is how familiar it all is, pogoing between juke-derived textures, IDM’s click-clack machinery, misty pastoral ambience, and house music’s 4/4 insistence while weaving a web of shivering romance that still manages to move bodies. Above all else, Sepalcure offers a necessary reminder that, yeah, change is good, but elegant, refined perfection also has its place. –Larry Fitzmaurice

47: PAUL WOOLFORD & PSYCATRON ‘STOLEN’ (HOTFLUSH)
Almost five years on from ‘Erotic Discourse’, someone, somewhere did 2011 a massive favour and relit the fire under Paul Woolford’s arse, prompting the Leeds veteran to roll back the years and deliver some of his all-time best material. ‘Razor Blade’ and his remix of T. Williams and Terri Walker’s ‘Heartbeat’ were sublime, but this colossal collaboration with Psycatron on Hotflush simply took the biscuit.

Paul Woolford and Psycatron – Stolen [HFT018] by Hotflush

40: OLD APPARATUS SIDE A PART 1 (DEEP MEDI)
Old Apparatus’s mysterious debut – 20 minutes of music spread across two untitled sides of vinyl – is something we recommend enjoying as a whole, but there’s no doubt that the first distinct movement of the A-side packs the fiercest punch. It sounds like UK garage gone industrial, its perfectly swung rhythm riven by distortion and an overloaded darkside bassline. The end, it suggests, is very much nigh.

39: TEETH ‘SHAWTY’ (502 RECORDINGS)
Smoked-out drum machine pop from Helsinki’s TEETH that suited 502′s darkroom aesthetic (see also: Jay Weed, Fis-T) to a tee.

Oneman’s 502 Label: Teeth – Shawty/Shawty [FaltyDL Remix] 502003 by stholdings

24: KAHN ‘LIKE WE USED TO’ (PUNCH DRUNK)
Kahn’s beautifully crafted debut single bowled us over, with its vocals chopped into the syllables of pure energy and longing – “feminine pressure” writ large – and strapped to the most lithe and undeniable dubstep rhythm we heard all year.

Kahn ‘Like We Used To’ (Punch Drunk Records) by Punch Drunk Records

20: BLAWAN ‘GETTING ME DOWN’ (WHITE LABEL)
This year, Blawan expanded on the promise of his 2010 debut single ‘Fram’ to become one of the UK’s most in-demand, and refreshingly, heaviest producers, proving that you can still go hard in the paint without resorting to dubstep or electro-house cliches. He showed off his lighter touch, however, on this vinyl only edit of Brandy’s ‘Wanna Be Down’; it’s still his finest track to date.

17: PANGAEA ‘WON’T HURT’ (HESSLE AUDIO)
Pretty much everything Pangaea touches turns to gold, but nothing gleamed so bright in 2011 as ‘Won’t Hurt’ – a rude-as-all-fuck but masterfully honed onslaught of scything synths, choppy drums and outrageous sub-bass.

Won’t Hurt by pangaea

13: UNKNOWN ARTIST ‘SICKO CELL’ (SWAMP81)
I’m the information… co-caine powder. Say no more.

07: ROCKWELL ‘ARIA’ (CRITICAL AUDIO)
The most atmospheric, emotive and dynamic drum’n’bass track of the year, and an instant classic – wrought out of fierce, fanatically detailed drum programming, ghost-traces of This Mortal Coil’s ‘Song To The Siren’ and impeccably timed, gut-skewering bass stabs.

42: 2562 FEVER (WHEN IN DOUBT)
Fever is a concept album with a very simple but rigorous set of rules – every nuance and texture is half-inched from disco records produced from the mid 70’s to the early 80’s, with producer Dave Huismans’ own birth year of 1979 acting as a temporal pivot. The results don’t sound like disco at all – beyond a certain joyous, celebratory quality – but rather a new kind of dance music; dynamic, shapeshifting and irrepressible.

5. Hotflush
If you’re wondering why we think Hotflush is one of the best labels of the year, then you are not reading XLR8R enough. Let’s start with the obvious reasons: Sepalcure’s debut full-length topped Hotflush’s year off with a stunning display of dense post-dubstep, George FitzGerald dropped two more solid singles of R&B-infused garage, and label head Paul Rose (a.k.a. Scuba) unleashed one of 2011′s biggest tunes, “Adrenalin.” Meanwhile, Praveen Sharma of Sepalcure dropped four tracks of luscious, rolling garage with his A Meaning EP as Braille and Lando Kal stepped outside his usual role as the taller half of Lazer Sword long enough to deliver two of his most impressive solo cuts to date, “Further” and “Time Out.” Big, soulful tunes, consistently top-notch output, and a proven ability to not only shift within the ever-moving bass-music scene, but, more importantly, the power to influence it, made Hotflush a force yet again in 2011. Glenn Jackson

4. SWAMP81
Second acts can be hard to come by in electronic music, particularly in the lightning-quick environs of London’s hardcore continuum, but DMZ co-founder Loefah doesn’t seem to be having much of a problem with it. Since founding the SWAMP81 imprint in 2009, he’s quickly assembled a roster that functions as a sort of all-star team for upfront, low-end-heavy sounds. After serving up massive tunes like Addison Groove’s “Footcrab” and Ramadanman’s “Work Them” in 2010, the vinyl-only label stepped it up even further in 2011, dropping releases from FaltyDL, Zed Bias (both solo and as one-half of the Funkbias collaboration with Funk Butcher), and another single from Addison Groove. SWAMP81 was also home to records from Boddika—establishing him as a solo artist and one of the year’s biggest producers. Perhaps most notably, the label (eventually) released “Sicko Cell,” one of 2011′s most anticipated tunes. (The song may not have quite lived up to the hype, but it did snag the #13 slot on our countdown of the year’s best tracks.) Even as folks begin to wonder about the state of so-called bass music and attempt to figure out exactly where it’s heading, there appears to be no shortage of quality music coming from the SWAMP81 camp. Shawn Reynaldo

47. Boddika
 “2727″
 (SWAMP81)
Even in a year when Instra:mental, the duo he’s been a part of for more than a decade, released a widely acclaimed and sonically adventurous new album, the ascent of Boddika as a solo artist could not be stopped. Tracks like “2727″—with its thunderous drums, acid lines, and unapologetically raw aesthetic—are the reason why. Shawn Reynaldo

2727 by Boddika

46. French Fries
”Champagne”
(ClekClekBoom)
Legend has it that Claude VonStroke wanted to sign “Champagne” to his Dirtybird label, but young French producer French Fries politely declined and kept the tune for his own ClekClekBoom imprint. True or not, it’s quite the story, not that this tune, which uses white space as effectively as it employs snappy drums and eerie synths, needed much help finding its way into DJs’ playlists. Shawn Reynaldo

French Fries – Champagne / Hugz ft. Bambounou [CCB001] – Out Now! (12″ Ltd Ed Vinyl) by ClekClekBoom

44. Sepalcure
”Pencil Pimp”
(Hotflush)
Sepalcure seems to compose bass music on the most loose, yet subtle terms, and the pair’s unique perspective on the genre has continued to yield stellar results. Somehow both tribal and smooth in the same breath, “Pencil Pimp” immediately stood out during the course of the duo’s debut LP, mostly due to the sheer weight infused into its post-happy sound—think Mount Kimbie with slightly bigger balls (and maybe some more drugs in the mix). Glenn Jackson

43. Blawan
”Getting Me Down”
Sampling generously from Brandy’s “I Wanna Be Down” is kind of a no-brainer (whether or not you’re willing to admit it, we all loved that song), but Blawan did much more than simply edit Brandy’s half-forgotten hit—he propelled it into the club of some distant planet with monstrous percussion and whatever the hell that reverse low-end sound is. Wherever it comes from, it’s strange, unnerving, and just about perfect. Glenn Jackson

26. Instra:Mental
 “When I Dip”
 (NonPlus)
2011 found veteran UK duo Instra:mental completing a very large left turn, essentially abandoning drum & bass for old-school electro, heavy low-end, and lots of 808 drum sounds. Ahead of the acclaimed Resolution 653, the pair dropped “When I Dip,” an undeniable tune that also folds some Southern-style booty bass into the outfit’s new sonic formula. It proved to be quite the effective opening salvo, both for Instra:mental’s re-emergence and Boddika’s big year as a solo artist. Shawn Reynaldo

Instra:mental Resolution 653 LP Sampler ‘Thomp’ / ‘When I Dip’ [NONPLUS013] by stholdings

24. Julio Bashmore
 “Ribble to Amazon”
(3024)
There’s a line somewhere between soulful, UK-style house and anthemic, almost cheesy, bangers that can be dangerous. However, when walked just right, that line is perfect for the dancefloor. Julio Bashmore knows exactly how to walk it, and “Ribble to Amazon” is one of his finest journeys on that limb—the pads are warm, the vocals are just right, and those breakdowns are too good to be true. Glenn Jackson

JULIO BASHMORE RIBBLE TO AMAZON (3024-011B) by 3024world

18. Teeth
”Shawty”
 (502)
Like many selections on Oneman’s 502 imprint, there’s not a whole lot to “Shawty.” Listening to the song, it quickly becomes apparent just how much space there is in the production, a factor that’s just as important as any of the actual sonic elements being put to use. That said, each of those elements is just about perfect. Utilizing low-slung drum beats, haunting synth melodies, and a sultry vocal sample, Finnish producer Teeth not only put himself on the bass-music map, he also created one of the year’s most memorable tunes. Shawn Reynaldo

13. Unknown
”Sicko Cell”
 (SWAMP81)
It’s amazing that when “Sicko Cell”—undoubtedly the most hyped tune of the year—was finally released in late July, the world was essentially already over it. In a world where anticipation grows exponentially online and DJs are mastering YouTube rips in order to play the latest tune, especially one created “anonymously” (it’s an open secret that Joy Orbison produced the track) and only passed along to a select few, “Sicko Cell” simply ran out of steam. Nevertheless, that doesn’t change the fact that it’s a monster of a club track. With a stripped-down aesthetic and eerie vibe, the song is rather similar to Teeth’s “Shawty,” but the twisted, Burial-esque vocal samples put “Sicko Cell” over the top. Shawn Reynaldo

3. Scuba
 “Adrenalin”
 (Hotflush)
Scuba made a trance song. (Polite company might refer to it as progressive house, but we’re going to call a spade a spade.) On the heels of “Loss,” which he released earlier in the earlier under his SCB moniker (and already nabbed #41 on this list), it was apparent that Paul Rose was interested in exploring new sound palettes, but something this, well, epic was not really expected. While the notion of one of the most influential and boundary-pushing dubstep producers of the past decade making a tune that Sasha would play (yes, that happened) sounds like some kind of nightmare on the surface, it doesn’t change the fact that “Adrenalin” is not only an excellent track, but also a production that completely resets exactly what it is that Scuba is all about. Containing one grandiose and ethereal breakdown—not to mention a series of smaller ups and downs along the way—”Adrenalin” certainly plays to the dancefloor, particularly dancers looking to lose their shit once the beat comes back in and the song’s chunky bassline takes hold. The synths are washy and warm, the sounds employed are impeccably clean, and yes, the track is absolutely, undeniably a bit cheesy. It’s also eight of the most enjoyable minutes of music we heard all year (more or less on repeat, to be honest), and we can’t wait to hear what Scuba comes up with next. Shawn Reynaldo

New D&B Releases

CRIT057EP – Enei – Stonehead EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Oh. My. Gosh. Critical come to conquer with this absolutely dangerous 4-tracker courtesy of Russia’s Enei; a name becoming more familiar by the day as one of the most talented and most exciting new school producers in the game. Snapped up by the ever on point label master Kasra, this EP only makes the prospect of the debut Enei album even more tantalizing. The title track ‘Stone Head’ is a bulldozer of a tune that comes complete with the Andy C seal of approval. A stepper’s paradise with rich kicks and a body-slamming, rolling b-line that’ll send shockwaves through any club. Serious is an understatement! Next up Enei hooks up with vocalist Riya for a proper techy bounder ‘No Fear’ with its undulating bassline that bounces hard taking no prisoners as it moves. The wrecking-ball of the bunch. Moving on and the mood changes slightly to the more flowing sounds of ‘Movin’ Fast’; a naughty, gnarly slice of heavyweight D&B with large feedback-infused bass and sick amen edits that keeps things lively. Wait for the breakdown and switch up though for the killer blow! Then finishing things off in fine style is the heavily hammered Jubei remix of Enei, Eastcolors & Noel’s hit from earlier in the year ‘Cracker’. Keeping the seedy original vibe alive, Jubei goes in deep and comes out the other side with another tough slab of speaker freaker bass and beats. Awesome.

SYMM008 – Break / Villem – Something New / Do You I Wanna – 12″ Vinyl
After the critically acclaimed release of ‘Slow Down VIP’, Break quickly returns with Symmetry’s 8th release. On the A-side, Break lead’s the way, stripping it back with ‘Something New’. This track is a definite head-nodder that retains the classic Break heavy -bass manipulation! Villem aka Andrew Wilson heads up the highly anticipated flip side with ‘Do You Wanna, I Wanna’. Also a key member to Utopia Music, Villem has DJ support from the likes of LTJ Bukem, Doc Scott, Bailey, Martyn and many more. He’s a man of many talents and is also one half of production duo Mute, who are often seen collaborating with rapidly rising Bristol producer Mako. This fantastic AA side completely captures the Symmetry vibe with a quintessentially liquid piano and vocal combination moving into some untouchable percussion. With growing DJ support across the board, Villem is definitely a name to look out for this year.

Plush Recordings first vinyl release has been long-awaited and for good reason.  Two fresh vibey takes on drum & bass music — tracks which bring warm melodies and meaningful summer memories to mind and set the mood for dance floor rhythmic rides. On the a-side Soundwall’s remix of Contract Killers “The Life Moments” features warm guitar parts and deep atmospheric pads which lead you into a hypnotizing swing step treatment in the breakdown. PFM and Formula One’s take on the flip is even dreamier, where they have collaborated together a piece of deep vocal music.  ”If You Were Mine” features vocals which indulge an airy dream of love, peace, and romance. Finish copy promo. Manchester label Soul:R first launched back in 2001 with releases from Calibre, Marcus Intalex, Marky and more that firmly established them as the go to label for dancefloor friendly drum n bass that soothed the ears rather than assaulted them. 10 years on and they’re still at the top of their game with this release from Dub Phizix. ‘The Editor & Narrow Eyes. UM005 – Fields – Foundations / Unspoken – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After his brother Villem dropped 2 slices of ice cold beats for the last Utopia release, Fields comes with the polar opposite with summer flavours for his first ever solo 12″. The A side is ‘Foundations’, a warm sunshine-filled bass heavy roller with a touch of the melancholy. Driven by simplistic drums shrouded wonderfully by subtle percussion, this roller hits heavy with the bassline, timed perfectly out of a down-sweeping Rhodes, backed-up by a loopy vocal which can only move you. On the flip is a track called ‘Unspoken’, a deep sub-filled minimal affair. It gently warms you with nuanced harps and percussion, before hitting you with stripped-back drums and a wall of sub bass. Dj support: LTJ Bukem, Bailey, Loxy, Total Science, Break, Spectrasoul, Mikal, Flight, Survival and many distinguished others.

B – Everybody Knows: Take us back to the glory days of r’n b. Who ever thought the Russians are not the most funky people on the world, guess again. This guy is funk himself! nice one. C – Never Wanna Be Alone Again: Intelligent Manners on the emotional tip, great piano work on this one and the melody will bring you in the mood for hot summer nights. D – Get Back: The lost track of this wicked double pack is probably the most dj friendly one. Big beats and another melodic master piece will bring the vibe on the dancefloor and the girls screaming for more!

FSRECS004 – Forbidden Society – Burn / War Ensemble – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. The 4th release on FSRECS bring 3 long avaited bangers from Forbidden Society, yes this time only FS solo tunes. Again the tunes was tested during the gigs by FS on a lot of gigs, and not only by FS, also by some of the people in FSRECS camp. The response on gigs was really good and also what the people wrote on the net hearing the clips on youtube or just listen to the tracks in the mixes finally FSRECS brings you the 004. The 4th edition should be out in september, first like usually on vinyl and then two weeks later in digital form with a bonus track. A : Forbidden Society – BURN A nasty banger with rap vocal in it, what to say to this track, dirty, hard, good sounding track that works on gigs with alot of requests when this one comes out from the fans, so you better be sure to get this one! B : Forbidden Society – WAR ENSEMBLE The name of the track says it all what to expect, a real proper Drum & Bass track influenced by alot of metal, specially Slayer!

DRUNK024 – Ekoplekz – Intrusive Incidentalz Vol 1 – 12″ Vinyl
Following critically acclaimed releases with Mordant Music and Further Records earlier this year, Ekoplekz delivers his first album for Punch Drunk. Dispensing entirely with notions of accessibility and dancefloor friendliness, ‘Intrusive Incidentalz vol.1′ is a 12 track collection of dark, oppressive atmospheres and violently unstable interludes, developed through studio improvisation and inspired by childhood memories of terrifying electronic soundtrack music from the 1970s, yet combined with a post-dubstep sensibility and a sense of dread informed by the social, economic and political climate of life in 2011. A bleak retro-futurist fantasy, or oblique soundtrack for a broken Britain? The truth probably lies somewhere between the two.

BOKA036 – Crushington & Optimus Gryme – Hangman / Voodoo Skank – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo’s. Purveyors of maximal minimalism in bass music, Crushington explore the mid-tempo soundworld of dubstep. Inspired to step outside of their box by a face-melting New Years Eve performance from Skream and Benga, for the last two years, Crushington have sonically sculpted their own, well-received take on dubstep. Lacking a developed knowledge of the genre, their unaffected explorations into different tempos and grooves have caught ears everywhere, leading to DJ support from N-Type, Jakes, Emalkay, Distance, Seven, Truth, Bulletproof, Datsick, Excision, Hatcha and Headhunter. Along the way, they’ve collaborated with, or remixed for Black Sun Empire, SPL, Truth, Optimus Gryme and Bulletproof. With high profile support and collaborations boiling over left right and centre and several boutique vinyl releases to their credit, DJ bookings across New Zealand and Australia have come quickly and to lauded receptions. Old school producers and DJs from the era of vinyl and “by ear” engineering, their sonic fidelity has seen their Crushington tunes described by the likes of Antiserum as the perfect studio mixdown reference. To put it in simpler terms, Crushington’s subwoofer rupturing arrangements are fast becoming a standard setter with in the international dubstep community, where things go next from here though; only time will tell.

SUBWAYDS005 – 501 – Gist / Borderline – 12″ Vinyl
Its been a long wait but finally 501 returns with yet another bigtime 12inch that will roll out punches even more than Mike Tyson! Fresh off his release from Never Say Die sees 501 twisting it differently this time.. Gist is a vocal infused stomper that opens the 12inch perfectly and sees 501 leaning into a swagger tip. It flows, it rocks, it jumps its everything in 1. It shows a different side to the standard 501 sound and shows he can bend any way he’d like to. You can hear that in the B side ‘Borderline’ where he exchanges the sweet vocals of Gist for a psychotic quote and the swagger lean for some ear shattering kicks & snares. Hear Borderline destroy your eardrums like the good old days with some SUB! Nothing beats the old fashioned heavyweight sound! Another essential 501 record!

It’s only a matter of time until this boy blows, this is Dubstep at it’s best! “The Time is Now” is the A side of this record and is a well rounded, crisp, clean production with bags of cross over appeal. “Speakers Up” is equally as catchy and will send shock waves through the globe..

New D&B Releases

MODULE005 – FD – Stack / Sent Down – 10″ Vinyl
Critical’s beloved new-kid-on-the-block Modulations imprint draws up another naughty storm in the form of ‘Stack’ b/w ‘Sent Down’ featuring Script. Having had releases on top-notch labels including Metalheadz and Critical, London-based FD is swiftly gaining recognition for upping the dance floor ante with scrumptiously deep demeanor. ‘Stack’ is a stepper that delivers efficient pulse and vibrancy, notably in its teasing bassline and clean snare, peppered with bleeps and vocals conjuring a feel of eerie, futuristic space-age. The AA side retains the energetic deep-liquid flow – ‘Sent Down’s initially gentle pads venture into a neat, nasty break and a mean grizzly, almost unpredictable, bassline. Listen out for the dark distorted vocal that brings you down to the darker corners of the dance floor. Shimmying symbols linger above the downright devilish drum-kit. Definitely a playful bass-heavy monster,’Sent Down’ is a shuffling pumper of a tune that deserves to wake the neighbours. And if they hate that resonating, violating bass, it can only be a good thing. DJ support from Noisia, Loxy, Logistics, Kasra, Ulterior, Motive Jubei, DJ Lee, Octane

Cern releases the sampler to the forthcoming album ‘Terminus’ on Project 51. Cern describes “Terminus” as “an album that takes its roots from Techstep and funk driven D&B,” going on to say “the album reflects the inspiration gained from his long standing admiration for producers like Ed Rush & Optical, Matrix, Konflict and Source Direct”, incorporating the sound they represented at a time, in his opinion, when Drum & Bass was “at its peak”

INVISIBLE003 – Hybris – Invisible 003 EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Hybris is Evan Vischi. After years of being a studio recluse, Evan surfaced in the DC scene and released collaborations and solo projects under the name Robot Death Squad. Towards the end of 2009 his tunes were spotted and picked up by Kasra, and his debut single was released on Critical: Modulations (The Cleaner/ Raindance) in June of 2010. With several forthcoming releases on C.I.A., Blackout Music, and Critical, and DJ support from some of the scene’s heaviest hitters, Evan is now committed to pushing heavy and precise dancefloor beats to the next level. For INVISIBLE, Hybris collaberates succesfully with the mighty NOISIA and drops 3 new solo tracks on this very special double pack vinyl. Great new sounds on the always evolving Invisible imprint.

Celsius is back once again with another release that’ll raise the temperatures in seconds! This 12 comes from the hands of ‘Command Strange’.. After his successful  ‘Soul Booster’ Album on Fokuz Recordings last year he’s ready to show everybody what he can do.. ‘Talking About Love’ is a lush sexy collab between ‘Command Strange’ & ‘Intelligent Manners’ that’s just too perfect for the upcoming spring season. The hiphop breakdown shows little nods towards Mutt’s sound but in its own way. The almost Cee-Lo Green ish vocals in the back aren’t making this track hold back one bit.. ‘Beautiful Days’ shows CS on the solo tip once again.. in other words.. Brace yourself for a sweet delicate roller with a sharp edge.. Lovely rolling breaks in the back and sensual piano strokes.. Let’s the girls melt like butter in your hands!

FCR003EP – Paper Crows – Fingertips (Break Remix) / Follow The Leader E.P. – 12″ Vinyl
‘Follow The Leader’/’Fingertips’ is the second release from rising stars Paper Crows, who’ve already caught the attention of tastemakers across the blogosphere, print and radio. Follow The Leader’ is a brilliantly, dark, unsettling, underground track that comes with a top drawer remix package. Hotly tipped newcomers Megabits deliver an insanely unique widescreen drum & bass/breaks/electro hybrid, while the legend that is Break delivers another stunning drum & bass remix. ‘Fingertips’ is quite simply a stunning song oozing with wild atmospheric beauty. Paper Crows have been wowing audiences with their live shows with sultry singer Emma Panas mesmerising with her spectral vocals and dramatic stage presence. GEN175006 – Deathmachine – Dark Energy / They Hunt Us – 12″ Vinyl
Deathmachine is the second artist to successfully infiltrate the ranks of The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. This release is reminiscent of some of The Outside Agency’s earlier work on One Seven Five, and we’re not saying that like it’s a bad thing. In Dark Energy pounding yet groovy distorted hardcore kicks, topped off with the snappiest of snaredrums, and a fittingly Bristish vocal sample make up the ingredients for this stormer that is guaranteed to make even the most stubborn dancefloor bust a move. They Hunt Us on the flip is a clear nod to Deathmachine’s love affair with drum & bass. He wined it, dined it, and ultimately wrote a song about it. Would you like to hear it? Here it goes. New Bass Music CD

HFCD005 – Hotflush / Various – BACK AND 4TH – CD x 2
With dubstep’s big push into the mainstream, stirring up all manner of hybrids, variants and mutations, it’s worth remembering that some have been creating fresh twists on the current generation of global bass music from its very inception. Paul Rose, aka Scuba, and his Hotflush label have, since 2003, had experimentation and genre-collision etched into the very structures of everything they do. Putting out key tunes by the core pioneers of dubstep, but also by true outliers like Mount Kimbie, Joy Orbison and Sepalcure, Hotflush has created a sense of absolute consistence in diversity: multiple sounds united by true craftsmanship and high-tech expression of complex emotion. Joining the UK underground to the deep-rooted techno culture of Berlin, where Rose is now resident, the label is a vital nexus in the flow of musical information that is fuelling the current innovative climate. DOUBT001CD – 2562 – Fever – CD
What’s the point of a concept album when no one hears the concept in it? Maybe that it sets a boundary, forcing mr artist to go even deeper into the fewer possibilities left. Creativity by limitation and all that… we’ll spare you further theorizing. ‘Fever’, the third longplayer by dutch low end scientist 2562, then, is his disco album: a thorough reinterpretation of underground disco music from the mid seventies to the early eighties, with his own birthyear 1979 as the gravitational point. All based on one simple rule: every single sound, from the smallest background shiver to the most obese sub bass, originates from a disco record – no additional synthesizers, drumcomputers or other samplesources involved. Disco-edits, italo homages or filtered loops then? Hardly. This is genuinely new and retro-free music that respectfully flips its sources so hard even the biggest Paradise Garage connaisseurs won’t recognize what just hit them. Or in the words of musical allies Martyn and Pinch, who independently drew the same conclusion: “Sorry, but I don’t hear that whole disco story in there. This simply sounds like you.” Completely failed as a concept album, then – and all the better for it.

DRUNK021 – Kahn – Like We Used To / Helter Skelter – 12″ Vinyl
New year, New blood. Kahn steps forward from the shadows of the Bristol underground to deliver a killer double A side debut 12” release for Punch Drunk Records. The immediacy of Kahn’s brand of electrostatic synths and stirring, moody grooves are sure to rapidly ascend his profile in 2011. ‘Like We Used To’ strikingly layers a neck snapping rhythm with mutated soulful vocals, whilst ‘Helter Skelter’ brings enough irresistible bump and flex to move any dancefloor. Kahn’s basslines may eminate from Bristol, but prepare to feel the resonance worldwide. Bristol’s Punch Drunk label recently reached it’s landmark 20th 12” release and was voted #18 in Resident Advisor magazine’s Best Labels of 2010 poll.

HF027 – Joy O – Wade In / Jels – 12″ Vinyl
Since the release of his debut “Hyph Mngo” that swept the global dance music world in 2009, British producer Peter O’Grady (aka Orbison) makes his return on Hotflush Recordings as Joy O in 2011. These two productions take a more straightforward approach, toeing along the lines of classic house music, infused with this talented producer’s own signature style, weaving rolling acidic basslines in “Wade In” and uplifting melodies in “Jels” and over shuffling Roland drums and blissful atmospherics.

HFLP005 – Hotflush / Various – BACK AND 4TH – 12″ Vinyl x 3
Pressed on 180 Gram Vinyl in a gatefold sleeve. So next time you hear someone talking about “post-” this or “future-” that, consider that maybe the times are just catching up with Hotflush. New Bass Music Promos

ROTTUN007 – Downlink – Biohazard / Zombie Apocolypse – 12″ Vinyl
Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep. With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. His first two releases charted at #1 on several popular online music stores and soon he found his way onto Rottun Recordings which seemed a suiting place for his music. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from the likes of Nero, Excision, Datsik, Rusko, Dieselboy, Crookers and many more. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience…

OSMUK012 – DJ Madd – Pitch Black / New Reality – 12″ Vinyl
DJ Madd has been killing it recently. It’s another knee-slapping combination drenched in powerful vibes and both tunes are nasty, guttural affairs sure to make your eyeballs rattle. The sound of the release as whole is a little reminiscent of Distance, with crunchy basslines rasping and snarling like enraged wolves savaging a couple of fwuffy wittle bunnies. Thankfully, I love both Distance and bloody carnage, so this is a cracker. words by http://www.boxmusique.com/dj-madd-pitch-black-new-reality-osmuk012

3024011 – Julio Bashmore – Batty Knee Dance / Ribble To Amazon – 12″ Vinyl
Two brand new tracks from Bristol’s emergent House prodigy. Batty Knee Dance brings ultra syncopated 808′s, neurotic synths and a mournful vocal refrain together in a tightly packaged low drag configuration. Ribble To Amazon maintains the levels of 808 astro physics but heads for the great outdoors with subtly staggered pads and an impossibly delicate Lepidopteran melody basking in a 16:9 sunset. Exclusive to the digital Grand National winds down with wistful synth trumpets and a rhythmic strut perfectly aligned with the greatest roller disco ever.

KOKO is a hypy swingtime-jam ready to make dancefloors go nuts; thrilling percussive variations, deep sub hits and nutty samples. The more soulful, yet experimental ANALIES, draws on HYPNOs signature percussion. Adding sampled vocals, effective kick-drum patternshifts, takes the listener off-guard! Truly, a top shelf twelve! DP051 – Antiserum – Zephyr / Purple & Gold – 12″ Vinyl
San Francisco-based producer Antiserum steps up for Dub Police with two unique collaborations, featuring local producers Ill-Esha and 12th Planet respectively. His music is a masterfully crafted fusion of influences that results in a sound entirely his own, balancing light against dark and colour against pure bass pressure. Showcasing a deft musicality as well as an unrivalled talent for system shaking productions, Antiserum is taking the scene by storm. Releases on Narco.Hz, S.C.U.M and Argon amongst others have already propelled him to the forefront of the rapidly growing American dubstep scene, with plenty more still to come. On the A side, he is joined by Ill-Esha on ‘Zephyr’, a sick g-funk inflected roller. Skittering hi-hats and tough drums lay the foundations on this one, with the deep, smooth bass sweeping underneath. The vibrant synths weave in and out of each other with ease, swimming around the mix and swelling expansively through the speakers. On the flip he teams up with 12th Planet on the massive ‘Purple & Gold’. The g-funk influences continue to flow through this track, pinned down by a hard bassline and taut drums. The shimmering synths sliding over the top of the percussion and off into the atmosphere give the track an epic stop-in-your-tracks effect.

CRIT052 – Enei, Eastcolors & Noel – Cracker / Danger Dance – 12″ Vinyl
Critical Music marches forward, tapping into yet more new talent for 2011 resulting in an absolutely filthy D&B excursion that has had the likes of Andy C going ballistic for it. Hailing from Russia, Enei, who has already bagged himself an exclusive album deal with Critical, Eastcolors and Noel may be familiar with a few but with this release they look set to cement themselves in the collective consciousness of drum & bass aficionados the world over. ‘Cracker’ is rough, rugged and very, very raw. Ultra-tech D&B could be the term to use as the trio of producers come together to deliver what could possibly even be one of Critical’s biggest releases to date. Full of sick mid-ranges, snapping drums and sneaking subs, this one is cold, dry and full of funk that’ll have people full-on skanking around clubs until the early hours. Absolute gold. Enei then goes it alone on the more experimental ‘Danger Dance’, that intros with a sparse arrangement of stalking pads and fx that set the mood of unrest. In bounces a low-slung bass and it’s away we go on this gorgeously glitchy, 808-laden ride that sits perfectly alongside the likes of Rockwell and indeed Critical. DJ support from Andy C, Alix Perez, Friction, Icicle, Cyantific, Nu:tone, Logistics, Rockwell, Lenzman, Hype, Jubei, Ulterior Motive and more.

Just imagine if you could take cells from any producer in the world and mix them up to create your own super producer who whould it be? Hear his Vinyl debut here on Syndrome Audio with the astonishing tracks Probes & Horus 8. Probes sounds like a mutant cyborg that’s reprogramming your brain with its razor sharp beats and unpredictable mid range. If you listen to this big time production when you know why we call him the super producer. Inspired by the greats of twisted funk and now ready to compete in the big game that is DnB. Horus 8 is trash in every sense of the word. Dirty festering bass lines roam around this track like buzzards circling a dead pray.. They wait until you can’t anymore and then strike to deliver the final blow.. Billain is a deadly producer you should keep your eyes on.. If you can’t hear it in this release then this kind of dnb just isn’t for you.

New D&B Promos

CRIT053 – Seba & Paradox Ft. Kirsty Hawkshaw – The Light / As If – 12″ Vinyl
As we approach spring, the seasonal turn brings with it an uplifting release set to be essential listening for all the eardrums still recovering from the dance-floor damage committed in the darker months. This release hails from Seba and Paradox, no strangers to the d&b circuit, as Critical Music outputs two stunning tracks prepping us for the warm sun-shining days to soon come. Courtesy of Kirsty Hawkshaw, ‘The Light’s beautiful vocals soothe away those frostbitten blues from former months; they swathe around blissful old-school piano keys, breaking through layers and rising over irresistibly smooth drum patterns. A deep bass-line unexpectedly makes an appearance, underlining the evocative summertime goodness – with this aurally euphoric track you can almost taste the blue skies. Seba and Paradox dig deep underground and unleash the dirt on the flip with a jungle-tech tour de force in the shape of ‘As If’. An ominous intro erupts into coarse drum patterns, enveloped by dirty bass that’s just downright mean. A straight-up dance-floor box-ticker, this is a track of volcanic proportions. Beware the explosion!

RAMP041 – Bad Autopsy – Bad Autopsy EP – 12″ Vinyl
RAMP continues it’s tradition of uncovering new talent with new signing – Bad Autopsy. Little info has been given to us about this young London based talent, but his debut EP speaks volumes, cheekily landing somewhere between Grime & Funky, with shades of Wild Pitch.

DVA007 – GuGu / Scratcha DVA – The Afro Cuban EP – 12″ Vinyl
The seventh release on DVA records comes from a young, unknown resident of Manchester named GuGu. Staying true to the DVA style, his two tracks are fine examples of todays hybrid Funky House scene, maintaing the 4 to the floor drum patterns whilst drawing on a wide range influences… and as it suggests in the EP’s title, is packed full of Cuban flava. Straight up music designed to make people dance. It wouldn’t be right to get a DVA release without a feature from the man himself, Rinse Fm’s Grimey Breakfast show host Mr Scratcha DVA. As a slight deviation from the norm – and in a way a return to the styles his earlier production – DVA lays down a heavyweight slice of synth laden half step, defiantely one to pull your dirty face too. Check it out and get back to us with your thoughts.

SAIGON003 – Gravious – Junction City EP – 12″ Vinyl
Saigon Recordings reaches release number 3, following on from the successful Orphan101 debut and recent Duffstep single. SAIGON003 signals the return to action by Scottish based producer Gravious who originally made a name for himself in the early years of now legendary label Hotflush Recordings. Junction City EP features three tracks of shiny, happy future funk with a distinct space-theme. The EP is currently receiving worldwide airplay and was recently listed in Kmag’s ‘Top 10 releases for January 2011’ – http://bit.ly/erwj0L
What the DJ’s are saying:

HF026 – Sepalcure – Fleur EP – 12″ Vinyl
Following the release of their stunning summer debut EP ‘Love Pressure’, Sepalcure – a Brooklyn-based duo composed of Travis Stewart and Praveen Sharma – have announced their second EP featuring four brand new cuts, due for release in late January 2011 on Hotflush Recordings. Having produced for years individually as Machinedrum (LuckyMe) and Praveen (of Praveen & Benoît), their new collaboration breathes a new life of its own, reflected in its distinctive, lush sonic warmth and a refreshing style of composition that is as equally fitting on the dancefloor as it is in the comfort of one’s home. The Fleur EP shows a progression of Sepalcure’s depth of field, weaving distant chords, soulful vocals, and organic rhythms into vibrant, immersive soundscapes, with echoes of house, techno, and dubstep within. Be it the gentle melodies of “Fleur”, the ascendant effervescence of “Your Love”, the relentless bass of “No Think”, or the suspending ambience of “Inside”, it is a sound that is unmistakably Sepalcure. Their live performances have been gaining steam over the last year, beginning with appearances at Unsound Festival, Dub War NYC, and The Bunker, followed by a live showcase at Portland’s Decibel Festival in September, they are set to embark on their first European tour with other Hotflush artists this December. They have also composed an original track in Darren Aronofsky’s new film Black Swan, in theatres starting December 2010.

THIN16 – Funckarma – Dubstoned 5 EP – 12″ Vinyl
As we’ve been stalking the Funckens for ten years now, after stumbling upon their parts series on DUB when we were still students, trekking religiously to the Sirius on weekends, eventually spending nights in bus shelters to assist to half a live in a school that only served wine, and trying to organise a bash with them in a squat that burned down a week before the bash, before finally inviting them to an exhibition closing party that incidentally marked the beginning of Thin Consolation, they seemed an obvious choice for a release for the tenth anniversary of UNREzT and the fifth of Thin Consolation. Having already graced Thin Consolation with an album in 2006 as Dif:use (with long-time partner Cor Bolten), this time we requested from them a 12″ of a more step-ish inspiration, the fifth in the Dubstoned series, the previous editions having been released on Highpoint Lowlive, Ad Noiseam and Eat Concrete. In so many words, the Dubstoned series is the last major electronic musical genre to have appeared – Dubstep – to be given the special Funcken treatment: a dark and brooding, dub-flavoured electronica. Not for the faint hearted. Mepeche is co-produced by Phinx, and Spectrum is a remix of a track by Eedl, released on the album ‘Everse’, on the Barcelona-based label spa.RK.

a1 Funckarma – Mepeche
a2 Funckarma – Mako

HDB049 – Funkystepz – Fuller / Hurrican Riddim – 12″ Vinyl
Funkystepz are a collective of house producers from North London, with a show on Rinse FM and a string of self-released underground hits under their belts. They’re definitely some of the producers to watch out for this year. After a period of trial and testing on dubplate by DJs like Kode9 and Marcus Nasty, this first release for Hyperdub doesn’t mess about. ‘Fuller’ is a dancefloor destroyer of a very British vintage. Hard without being rigid, with a cold, elastic sense of melody that bounces and snaps around the midrange between the bass and snares. Tempered by an occasional organ stab, it’s one of those tracks that will lively up any club straight away, doing away with the forced euphoria of a lot of contemporary dance music, and instead honing the harder-to-master skill of energetic intensity and building anticipation. ‘Hurricane Riddim’ takes the listener through a number of contrasting moods simply but effectively. Opening with heavy orchestral stabs and military snares reminicent of classic grime, the addition of a complicated, snaking bassline gives the track a jump up feel, and the eight-bar aggression gives way to sections of orchestral calm and a sad but bouncy piano melody.

New Bass Music Promos

EXIT024 – Consequence – Snakes & Skulls / Dub Bounce – 10″ Vinyl
After Consequence’s debut album on Exit as a virtually unknown producer with only a couple of releases to his name, he has blossomed into a much loved and highly regarded musician who’s compositions have that rare listen again quality. His work has been an integral part of the Autonomic movement over the past two years and will continue to be long into the future. With a recently completed second solo album and also a collaborative album project with friend Joe Seven under the alias ‘They live’ on the release schedule, Exit Records present this single as the first of a 10” series reminding us of his talent. On this 10” he turns his hand to the 140 bpm deep dub style and proves that his sound has no boundaries. ‘Snakes & Skulls’ As usual Consequence manages to mix calming ambience with vibrant drums to achieve that cinematic trait that he’s known for. Combining those elements with earth shaking sub bass he works up an organic sounding roots track that beats away with entrancing tribal energy.Unintelligible vocals flutter in and out with filtered drum effects and percussion creeps in and out which keeps the whole piece moving nicely. ‘Dub Bounce’ is truly a remarkable insight into Consequences ability to create character and trigger emotion with his music. Drums and bass swing so hard they could break your neck Dilla style, whilst despairing atmospheres and odious sound effects wreak havoc on your sense of security like watching a horror flick on acid. Production quality and depth of sound are second to none which comes as standard with Consequence, but this track has it in abundance and is sometimes unfathomable. Its deep and its very dark, but also highly addictive so use with caution.

MEDI037 – V.I.V.E.K – Pulse / Roots – 12″ Vinyl
V.I.V.E.K drops his first single since his much talked about double pack ‘Feel It’ was released on DEEP MEDi in October 2010. ‘Pulse’ opens with V.I.V.E.K’s unmistakable dark, resounding, industrial production with layers of subbed out techno touches and efx. ‘Roots’ however on the flip lurches and twists over a deep cinematic melody, V.I.V.E.K on meditation vibes.
Radio Support: Nihal (Radio 1), Benji B (Radio 1), Gilles Peterson (Radio 1), Youngsta (Rinse FM)
DJ Support: Mala (DMZ), Distance (Chestplate), Tunnidge , Cyrus, Hatcha,

DOT005 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #2 – 12″ Vinyl
Accompanying the debut LP remix EP number 2 straddling the realms of dubstep, house and disco from an ever emerging pool of old and new guard. Remixes On the dub orientated EP with Mark E, Session Victim and Riley Reinhold. Duffstep’s debut album ‘Getting to Sirius’ is a heady potion laced with influences of dub and down tempo beats, winding through layers of melody and synths whilst vocals soften the blow providing a nice, warm and fuzzy edge to the thick slabs of sonic concrete. Though you won’t have to wait before a nice big bass-line knocks you down on your arse again.

IBR006 – Various Artists – Tax Haven II – 12″ Vinyl
The second “Tax Haven” EP from Iberian Records brings together three different producers operating from within the Lisbon and Barcelona bass enclaves for another varied selection of Bass’n'Groove flavours… First up sees Migrant (aka 23Hz) debut on the label with “Monolith”, a driving monster of a tune propelled by an amen break conjugated through a Kuduro drum pattern. The production comes fitted with extra heavy low end body pressure as standard, as we have come to expect from Migrant in his many guises, and the general vibe has a deep Tribal Jungle take on it. Floor shattering appeal here. On the 33rpm flip sees the return of Lisbon based brothers Octa Push with their “Legos” cut featuring K-Tronik. A result of “playing videogames surrounded by African masks”, the production brings a typically beat savvy attack oozing raw bashy energy, with synths and bleeps fighting all-comers. K-Tronik’s (legendery member of Portuguese Hip Hop duo Nigga Poison) brings tight creole verses to tell a cautionary tale of cocky philandering in the hardcore suburbs of Lisbon. Pure originality! Last up sees Cardopusher’s first release on the label with “Dembow Together”. Since moving from Caracas to Barcelona, Cardopusher has gradually progressed from mid range aggression towards a more Funky tropical vibe. Slowing down the bpms to a Funky jam Cardo takes a Reggaton beat pattern and whilst keeping the summertime vibes, forges something all together much more powerfully dirty with Techno/Electro stylings and the sounds of ancient analogue drum machines.

NONPLUS010 – Actress – Harrier ATTK / Gershwin – 12″ Vinyl
With a sound that no one can quite touch, nor classify, it comes as little surprise that an outside-the-box artist like Actress would come into the path of Autonomic. The mastermind behind the cult-worshipped Werk Discs (whose roster includes enigmatic producers Lone, Lukid and Zomby), Actress took the electronic spectrum into another direction entirely last year with ‘Splazsh.’ Released on Damon Albarn’s imprint Honest Jons, ‘Splazsh’ brought dynamic Hypercolour to the insular greyness that his ‘Hazyville’ album captured so well. After his acclaimed debut on Nonplus+ in 2010 – the astral ‘Machine And Voice’ EP, the intriguing artist returns to the label with ‘Gershwin / HarrierA bonafide classic to sit in the ranks alongside Cybotron, in comes a typically all-encompassing, textured four-on-the-floor stomper from Actress. A side: ‘Gershwin’ Conjures the bright metallics and intricate programming of a Ford workshop in a futuristic, sci-fi Detroit, but without the repetitive motion: no two bars are the same, and the track moves through so many colors and sounds it’s hard to keep up. Slamming with sharp, piercing lasers, roughly cut beats sit on a building melody that wraps itself around dreamscape New Order esque synths. aa) Actress ‘Harrier ATTK’ brings back the smoky, blurriness of ‘Hazyville,’ with an especially hypnotic twist. It’s the kind of Actress track that makes a listener lose all sense of time and space: a head nodder that could stay on loop for days, where the smallest subtleties come out loudest. Equal parts sublime and austere, a simple melody loops as a clean bass drum hits gently, and tangible sounds crack in the background.

aa Actress – Gershwin

HBR002 – Optimum – Light Year / DS-10 – 12″ Vinyl
Hum + Buzz return with their first release of 2011 from label co-founder Optimum. After releasing his debut EP ‘Max Power’ for Planet Mu in 2010, contributing to the excellent Night Slugs Allstars Vol. 1 and Modeselektion Vol. 1 compilations, Optimum returns on Hum + Buzz with two sci-fi, dancefloor tracks. ‘Light Year’ is a 4X4 time travelling excursion through brass rhythms, dotted arpeggios and razor sharp percussion. Gangsta techno meets UK bass, a crossover that Optimum seems to be making his own. On the B side ‘DS10’, named after (and partly made on) the Korg software for the Nintendo DS, is a menacing march that progresses into the unknown. All superfluous elements are discarded; the track focuses squarely on the relentless bassline and unpredictable 808 drum pattern. With these minimal ingredients combined, DS10 is a certified sound system bomb!

So as Winter seeps away and the frost melts we at Duff Disco are getting ready for these sidewalk, hot summer nights, radio bout to blow, small talk under the lights, feel the heat wild and sweet, Duff Disco returns with his peerless edit series clocking in at a number 5, yeah, a fist full of dollars, the five knuckle shuffle of releases. WNCL004 – Knowing Looks – Abandoned Skip / Last Kiss At The Plains Hotel – 10″ Vinyl
KNOWING LOOKS aka Toronto based producer Jason Hopfner, records for Musique Risquee, is the co-founder of Grain Records and is a welcome addition to the WNCL stable. ABANDONED SKIP is an unashamed dancefloor killer with it’s hard as hell 2-step beats, irresistible shuffle, swathes of funky electronics and perfectly placed rebel-rousing vocal chants. LAST KISS AT THE PLAINS HOTEL, an epic tale of love and loss, displays a mastery of cut-up production and arrangement that nods as much to Bacharach and Mantovani as it winks to Todd Edwards and Akufen.

PPRO14VSX – Photek – Avalanche / 101 – 12″ Vinyl
Full colour sleeve pressed on 180 gram Vinyl. Regarded by many as the finest electronic producer of his generation, the mysterious LA-based Photek enjoyed considerable success throughout the 90’s and into the new millennium with his own mutant breed of jungle and drum’n’bass. After a four-year hiatus from releasing music (and just over ten years since his last LP ‘Solaris’), the legendary Photek is back with a new sound and brand new 4-track EP – an occasion definitely worth the wait. Never one to stand still, Photek’s enviable reputation has been built not just on his ability to inspire both his fans and peers over the years through his productions but also through his knack of reinventing his sound time and time again. With his early work (under a variety of aliases) proving hugely popular in clubs, it wasn’t until ’97 when he released his now-classic debut album ‘Modus Operandi’ that he truly arrived, defying both his existing fan base and the Jungle scene as he pioneered a new alternative to the big room rollers that defined the era at that time. Three years later he surprised again, embracing Chicago acid-house and techno for his second artist album ‘Solaris’ in 2000, working with the brilliant Robert Owens on the classic single ‘Mine To Give’. Further EP’s followed after the turn of the millennium, as well as a number of film score credits (including The Matrix), but in 2011 he has once again shifted the gears, re-inspired by UK bass music and the current crop of young producers – Photek has a new sound to share with the world. Multiple Radio Plays by: Benji B, Annie Mac, Rob Da Bank, Mistajam, Nick Grimshaw, Greenmoney, Jon Kennedy.

New D&B Releases

EXIT025 – Various Artists – Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1 – 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1. With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles. As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. This album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today. Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

CRIT051 – Rockwell – Aria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Rockwell’s rise to prominence as a rare, distinctive talent has been exciting the electronica music circuit the world over. Critical, thankfully, being the trusty forefront for all things audio-aesthetically delicious, presents the ‘Aria EP’ – 4 tracks of sound sublime, exemplifying Rockwell’s refreshing angle on energy in the club combined with the characteristic, meticulously playful technicals, precise and thrilling as ever. The charmingly rustic intro of ‘Aria’ unleashes striking Flinstones-esque wooden triplets, scaling the track as stirring vocals weave through; haunting and uplifting at once, the title-track exudes sheer class. Slightly more buoyant, ‘Live For The Moment’ infuses an energetic tempo with profusions of ear-carressing funk and those ever-characteristic percussive twists – naughty all over. Swiftly plunged into apocalyptic darkness, the Ulterior Motive boys take a sinister liking to ‘Noir’. Distinctly menacing and genuinely frightening, what better to bully the atmosphere than Hell-raising bass and staccato violins. Listen out for the breakdown bass – horrific and enriching, this track is dark by Devil’s definition. Icing on the cake collaboration with underground legend Untold comes in the form of ‘Rehoku Sunrise’, a tribal earthy worldly masterpiece of running drums and raw, wild samples, glazing the soul in bliss. Bellissimo.

TRIPS004 – Silent Witness – Brainedrain / Frozen Still – 12″ Vinyl
A. Silent Witness – Brainedrain opens up with an uplifting sound scape of lush chords, tight beats, and bass growls that rises up to a devastating drop of titan like proportions. Drums and bass dance with each other along the way, taking in turn-around tripwires and reverb bombs. It eventually settles with a break down consisting of twisted pitch drops and euphoric anticipation. The second drop then kicks in with a different twist on the bass frenzy witnessed earlier. Simply Disgusting. AA. Silent Witness – Frozen Still still harks back to the vibes of jungle with an eerie wash amidst classic stabs and vocal snippets. This sound is updated with contemporary minimal drums, exciting rhythmic frills, and a rolling sub bass designed to smother everyone in the Silent Witness ether. Bass stabs and moody pads prevail with time stretched fills electrocuting all in it’s path. Dangerous business! REDSEAL007 – Need For Mirrors – Def Tone / Scar Tissue – 12″ Vinyl
Limited coloured vinyl pressing. Mosus & HLZ, two humans collectively known as Need for Mirrors take years of submerged sonic research and reflect / project it back at us with the utmost respect to the craft of Drum and Bass production. NFM have effectively filtered the cream elements of what formed the golden years of drum and bass, added their own unique approach, and forged it all together into potent innovative future darts. Dart number 1 – ‘Def Tone’ is a lesson in mixdown depth, pushing each sound to its maximum strength. Drums that deliver on their serious intent, a bassline that shudders menacingly outside normal frequencies and eerie atmospherics that temper the NFM funk. ‘Scar Tissue’ is a Need For Mirrors personal favorite, its low slung brood gliding across your senses while the rhythm section works its magic. This is how Drum and Bass is meant to sound! Need For Mirrors have seen immense DJ support from Pendulum, Friction, Krust, Dj Die, Doc Scott, Jubei, Presha, Logistics, Nymfo, Zero t. PRSPCT012 – Current Value – The Spell / Code Of Chaos – 12″ Vinyl
Like a highspeed battle tank PRSPCT Recordings storms back to the scene with an obvious buy on sight record.. Current Value is finally up for his very own PRSPCT release and again he knows how to devastate the very ground he’s walking on.. By teaming up with Snow & Nanotek he’s upgraded the CV sound.. as allways.. The release sets off with ‘The Spell’ a mystical industrial roller.. Imagine a warehouse filled with Santa’s elves working on high quality beats all cute and cuddly.. Only to be plowed down in one foul swoop  by CV’s bulldozing mechanical bass lines leaving destruction, chaos and dead elf bodies.. Painting the halls red with blood! Flip it over for ‘Code Of Chaos’ for another heavy duty roller.. This one is a bit more stripped down but that doesn’t mean this one is ‘Minimal’.. Pounding rattling beats infused with deadly tech bleeps. A sure shot when it comes to testing out the rig.. Drums & Basses.. as DnB was intended!

INMIN002 – Various Artists – Covered By The Dust EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Unquote and Mr. Sizef are two upcoming producers hailing from St. Petersburg, Russia. Their deep, abstract and creative approach (tune names included) have earned them releases on such highly praised labels as Hospital, Med School, Liquid Brilliants, Absys, Blu Saphir and Basswerk. Having a bright future in front of them, these two are taking atmospheric drum ‘n bass to another level. A-SIDE: BLUE MOTION & UNQUOTE – COVERED BY THE DUST Fans of the Russian duo, Subwave will be immediately drawn to the dust. Blue Motion teams up with Unquote for this atmospheric masterpiece. Blissful pads, a catchy electronic riff, and crescendoing bass creates the introduction, before wading into an early break. Intricate drum patterns articulate the center of the track, bringing with it deep, rumbling bass and a simplified female vocal. It’s not long before the second break hits, and the track’s formula starts again. Try to listen to this one all the way through. You won’t be disappointed. B-SIDE: MR. SIZEF – 170 STEPS OF LONELINESS Where do these 170 steps lead? Would the siren in the intro be any indication? As the sweet, pitched-up female vocal rolls through alongside a slightly distorted synth riff, the bass comes flanging in with a galloping sort of feel before all of the elements come together for some great, traditional drum ‘n bass. Great use of effects on this one. C-SIDE: MR. SIZEF – LILY IS A FLOWER WHICH IS GIVING RISE TO LOVE Heavy bass and female chant samples accompany a tribal drum style to introduce this beauty. The drums filter in alongside multi-layered pads. A short break rides through right away, but it isn’t long before the sophisticated rhythm and chopped up vocal come back around. This tune would make a wonderful set closer. D-SIDE: UNQUOTE – WE BREATHE YOGHURT LYING ON A STRAWBERRY BED One would be curious as to what a track such as this one would sound like. Images and visuals floating through your head as you press play; the airy, angelic pad intro induces you into a trance-like state before soothing piano lines and a pitched-up vocal reminiscent of the early hardcore era takes you away. As the drums come in with a half-time feel, it is easy to imagine Japanese taiko drummers playing their part.

a Blue Motion & Unquote – Covered By The Dust
b Mr Sizef – 170 Steps of Loneliness
c Mr. Sizef – Lily Is a Flower Which Is Giving Rise To Love

Following on from last year’s impossibly good The Love Quadrant EP by Space Dimension Controller, Kinnego Records return with two tracks from label owner Boxcutter, his first new material since the Arecibo Message album on Planet Mu. “Moon Pupils” is a gentle, trippy bit of 2-step, full of tweaked analogue melodies and tape echoed flute. On the flip, Boxcutter & Kab Driver take inspiration from vintage library music and dubbed out disco. “2Time” is all handclaps and insistent synth chords, with two woozy string-led breakdowns. SINS004 – LD – Ghost Story / Hard Skank – 12″ Vinyl
LD’s sound is his own. Drawing on his roots, you can hear the drum pan sounds of Jamaica resonating throughout, flashes of Soca drums, subtle tribal nuances, and the ghost of Jungle reverberating in the warm, pulsating sub bass. It seems now is the time for LD to make the transition from behind the scenes and into the limelight.

MR011 – Jamie George – Flying Saucer (Ft Roska & J Kenzo Remixes) – 12″ Vinyl
Roska’s Kicks and Snares/RKS is back with another big release, and this time it comes courtesy of Jamie George with the hotly anticipated Flying Saucer. First picked up by DJ Oneman, making it a feature on his Rinse mix cd, support for this track has grown and grown with well known acts such as Toddla T, Hot Chip and Tomb Crew repping it hard. Combining elements of UKG, House and Dubstep Jamie has created an instant classic that has worked hard to earn this release and the plays of DJ’s all across the country. Roska himself steps up with the first remix, a re-imagining with special attention on the percussion, elements of tribal and dancehall peel back the layers of the original in the way that only a talented minimalist like Roska can. With his speciality lying in the truly funky Roska drops a mix that literally drags you up to your feet and pushes you harder the longer it’s played. J Kenzo, of Dub Police fame, completes the package with a much darker, harder affair. You get the impression he took the original track and made it watch the entire Saw series back to back with Halloween then sent it back scarred forever. In all seriousness Kenzo has a real talent for creating dark, bass driven tracks and he has expanding on that here adding heavy portions of electro and old school to compose a truly original mix. Check them out and get back to us.

Silent Killer returns following the success last year’s ‘EVERYONE BLEEDS’, and this time he’s brought co-producer Breaker along and a star studded list of collaborators on ‘AMONGST VILLAINS’. Everyone who is currently making waves in the world of hard drum n bass makes a contribution, yet the album is surprisingly diverse, melodic, and memorable. Showing off considerable production and songwriting skills, the duo drop their tempo with fantastic results, on this vinyl single of the dubstep tempo tracks from the ‘Amongst Villains’ album. Joining forces with both Napalm Death legend Mick Harris (as SCORN), and breakcore master Enduser, and utilizing the vocal talents of Bulgaria’s Syze, the tracks range from the brutal, total dancefloor domination of the title track Amongst Villains, to the epic and uplifting sounds of Divine. ZAUDIO022 – Genetix – Hangin – 12″ Vinyl
This young talented duo is showing us how the heavier side of Dubstep should be done! You can really hear from their productions that they know their way around the studio and when you play some of Genetix tunes on a big system, make sure you put up some health hazard signs! Death by subs is a high possibility. Okay, on to the tunes! “Hangin’” is just one of those tunes to watch out for. It will blow your chest up with bass, make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck and possibly wet yourself with excitement. That’s only if you’re lucky though. Then we have “Trigger Happy” featuring Persist whose name I seem to be coming across quite a bit at the moment. This tune is great and can’t really choose between this and “Hangin’”. Both are insane! Then last but not least is “Sci Tech” which is on the deeper side. Great tune and a nice way to round off this great EP!

BNL001 – Jay 5ive & Kromestar – Bass 96 / Hands In The Air – 12″ Vinyl
What a way to launch a record label, ‘Bass & Love’ kick starts their already impressive release schedule with the highly sort after ‘Bass 96’ backed with the equally impressive ‘Hands in the air’ produced by label owners Kromestar & Jay 5ive. ‘Bass & Love’ is a fresh, new, exciting label setup by two of the scenes leading artists, Kromestar & Jay 5ive. Kromestar & Jay 5ive are looking to push the sound we love to a higher level, a musical, atmospheric, and ultimately different flavour of music while also casting aside the restraints of bpm and experimenting with different speeds there will be a vast array of music for everyone, a concept which has already seen this release supported by the likes of Mala, N-Type, JoeNice, Heny G, Von D, Joker, Silkie and many more talented established artists. “Bass 96” while being a chilled tune in heart, drops into an extremely heavy sub bass line, forcing every foot on the dance floor to move back and forth.

IBR005 – Various Artists – Tax Haven I – 12″ Vinyl
Iberian records comes out of a hibernation period with the a series of “Tax Haven” EPs. This first EP comes from a group of producers located in the Barcelona bass enclave and who have been some of the main players in the monthly B.LOW events there. Dedicated to what the label describes as Bass’n'Groove, this EP contains three varied and original sounding tunes with different Bpms suited to the leftfield of various bass music fields (dubstep/funky/future garage etc). First up sees Mr. Gasparov’s “Transient Love” come in the guise of a house influenced little gem of a tune featuring Japanese vocalist G.Rina (who has previosly worked with RSD and Nicolette) who cooes and whispers about transient lovers. Those of you already aquainted with Mr. Gasparov with his release on Soul Jazz Records “Steppas Delight 2″ compilation will recognize the attention to subtle melodic play. There is an overall summery vibe coming here – so something to warm us all up with and make us look ahead to brighter days. Accompany with a mojito and some afternoon sun! Next up sees Nehuen’s “Between Love and Hate” which is a tense stripped down bass’n'beat workout with a persistant bass riff and schizoid strings bringing the darkness. Nehuen is an artist that usually getting support from Dusk + Blackdowns Rinse radio show. There is a grimy and ruff feel here not to dissimilar to some Soulja releases from back in the day. Tuff steppas gear. On the 45rpm flip side Relocate come with their trademark relentness sub bass boogie on “Soul Survivor”. Opening with live drum rolls and low end throbs the tune drops into a driving heads down rhythm, laced with swinging ruff arse beats and a frustrated female vocal hook on the drop – “That I just came…” After which the rhythm section pounds away trying to please her! This is a souped up turbo garage workout pimped for the floor and primed for the bassbins.

Dj Madd has been a known face within the dubstep scene for while now.. his releases on Blackbox, War, Boka, Tube10 have been getting massive support.. End of Year reviews: Everyday Junglist

Everyday Junglist – Alternative Drum & Bass Awards 2010

Alternative Drum & Bass Awards 2010

12″ Of The Year – Winner:

Rockwell “Reverse Engineerring” b/w “Everything (& U)” Darkestral (LARTSEKRAD)
A hugely devisive release but one worthy of praise none the less. Reverse engineering is unlike anything else you will hear in d&b and while it is simply reveresed samples, it shows creativity and originality in abundance and is testamnent to Rockwell’s production prowess. The b side, everything (& u), is a beautiful counterpoint to the a side and goes to prove that the man has many strings to his bow. Aside from the music the design and packaging of the release is also second to none making this a worthy winner.

Album Of The Year – Winner:

Sabre “A Wandering Journal” Critical (CRITLP04 / CRITCD04)
Breathtaking in its scope and cinematic in its execution, this is an album in the true sense of the word which is a rarity in drum & bass. In fact, it really moves beyond being a ‘drum & bass’ album, rather falling more within the broader realms of electronica. A true tour de force.

Breakthrough Act – Winner:

Ulterior Motive
OK, so they kind of started making a name for themselves at the tail end of 2009 but 2010 has really see them take off and they are certainly now part of the d&b production elite, almost single-handedly bringing about a revical in the tech/neuro style a la Ed Rush & Optical circa the Wormhole era. While getting excitied over the fact that music sounds like it used to 10-12 years ago can be seen as a damning indictement on the state of the music today, if there’s one era that it would have been good to bring back it was this one, so props to the boys from Bournemouth for doing it so well.

Best Label – Winner:

Critical Music
A wonderfully diverse collection music has been released on critical this year from the abstract vibes of rockwell, through the straight up dancefloor of S.P.Y, Bladrunner and Break, to the minimalism of stray and the soulful ‘Redlines’ from Total Science and Riya, it has covered all bases. Whilst many labels claim to be diverse few are, and critical is showing them how it should be done.

P51UK019 – Nymfo & Cern – Proton Pack / Off The Radar – 12″ Vinyl

Proton Pack: Nymfo teams up with New Zealand’s own Cern for the a side “Proton Pack”. For anyone following Project 51 for the last 7 years this tune screams undeniable 51 funk. Off the Radar: This dropping bass line roller shows off Nymfo’s mastery of the low end. A sick minimal warehouse vibe that stands true to the pure sound of drum n’ bass. Look out for the next 2 parts of Reboot the System, featuring Prolix, Audio, Blockhead, and the Upbeats. Also, look out for Cern’s debut album on Project Fifty-One coming this summer.

SIRENUK001PT2 – Siren – Broken Silence Part 2 – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Part 2 of the Vinyl Eps’ featuring tracks taken from their debut album, “Broken Silence”, on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Gumball Rally’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei. Over the last 10 years Universal Project are responsible for hits such as ‘Vessel’ on the Virus imprint, ‘Haunted Dreams’ on their own label Universal Project and an EP on DJ Hype’s True Playaz, as well as ‘Streetilfe’ with DJ Friction for Advanced Recordings and many Renegade Hardware smashers such as ‘Danger Chamber’, ‘Comin’ Thru’ and the Black Techno EP. The Universal Project sound is B-Boy breaks with techno elements and dubwise bass, and everything in between. Vicious Circle broke through in 2005 with their monster remix of Universal Project’s ‘Jackhammer’ and have been destroying dancefloors ever since with their unique sound. Releases such as ‘Between the Lines’ and the ‘Welcome to Shanktown’ EP on Renegade Hardware pushed them to the forefront of the tech dnb scene. Subsequent releases on Digital Soundboy, Critical and Quarantine displayed a diverse style that has helped establish them as heavy hitters across the board whilst collaborations with high profile artists such as Chase & Status, Dom & Roland, Fierce and most recently Jubei clearly demonstrate the respect they command from their peers. After spending a lot of time in the studio together Vice and Ruxspin decided to create a new guise for their own brand of rolling future funk. Siren is the result. Both artists in their own right have toured the world from the farthest reaches of Europe to the United States and Asia, consistently destroying dancefloors and gaining a reputation as masters of their craft. The aim of this duo is to cover all styles within the scene and not be constrained by subgenres, whilst still maintaining a dancefloor ethos which is true to their UK roots.

g Siren & Fierce – Throw Light
h Siren – Broken Silence

PHUNK017 – NotioN – Because / Iota – 12″ Vinyl
Once again Phunkfiction brings on a hot new talent: NotioN is known for combining deep and dark moods with a wide range of musical elements and influences. ‘Because’ is a sick half tempo track using an ultra catchy pitched down vocal sample and an outstanding sound design – one for the fans of Instra:mental and D-Bridge. ‘Iota’ is a very stripped down dancefloor tool still spreading a big amount of funk – head nodding guaranteed. Both tracks are getting support by many big DJs on the scene.

G-ILLA006 – Dean Rodell & Katharsys – Interceptor / Time Hole – 12″ Vinyl
Straight from New York City comes Guerilla Recordings. With the release of Black Ops perfectly timed, this could be considered as the unofficial Guerilla style soundtrack! Dean Rodell of Machine Code and Subsistenz fame teams up with man of the moment Katharsys. Katharsys made a statement with his recently released ‘Zero Point / Cold Spot’ on Habit Recordings. The ‘Interceptor’ starts off with a the hugely filtered breaks and beats Dean is known for. Soon the Katharsys trademarks are getting noticed and yes this is wicked team work here. Bassline rolls and the beats rattle on an on, like you are on the battlefield dodging all the hostile gunfire. The ‘Timehole’ on the flip is Katharsys entering the playground solo. Freaked out intro building the tension. The beats start rolling in and you feel the bassline sneaking up you.. Mayhem!

AMALGAM005 – Kitech / Throttler – I am God / Bloody Victory – 12″ Vinyl
The 5th release on Amalgam Recordings brings together 2 artists who have previously released on Amalgam. Kitech from Essex is without a doubt one of the hottest artists in the D&B scene. With a few releases under his belt Kitech is going from strength to strength. He’s now working with Dylan (Freak Recordings) one of the biggest names in the scene. He’s also now part of Anger Management roster and is playing gigs far and wide. Throttler seems to have the cunning knack of being a prolific artist who maintains an extremely high level of production and programming on all his tracks. The level of detail in the programming & the high level of production makes his tracks stand head and shoulders above the rest. Bloody Victory is a immense spine chilling dance floor destroyer. DRUNK019 – Peverelist & Hyetal – The Hum / rrrr – 12″ Vinyl
Punch Drunk continue to twist, redefine and push forward the template of dubstep with a new 12” combining the talents of rising star Hyetal and Bristol veteran Peverelist. As part of the second wave of Bristol dubstep producers, Hyetal has already made his mark, garnering critical acclaim for his recent 12” ‘Phoenix’ on Orca and previously releasing 12”s on labels such as Reduction and Soul Motive in addition to his collaboration with Shortstuff on Punch Drunk earlier this year. This is Peverelist’s second 12” release this year following his ‘Better Ways of Living’ release for Punch Drunk and his recent mix for Resident Advisor. Both producers bring their trademark ingredients to the table, Hyetal’s kaleidoscopic synthesis and Pev’s deadly junglistic rhythm section combine to produce two very different tracks. The Hum is immediately grabbing, brimming with propelling energy and uplifting melodics. The cryptically titled ‘rrrr’ is a much darker disorientating psychedelic affair, slowly luring you into it’s groove, providing another typical Punch Drunk curve ball.

3024010 – Martyn – Left Hander / Shook Up – 12″ Vinyl
After a year dominated with collaborations (the Great Lengths remix double pack), fresh blood and inveterate genre renegades (Illum Sphere’s Titan EP & Altered Natives ‘The Bitch/Crop Duster’ respectively) We at 3024 came to the conclusion a new Martyn release was perhaps overdue. Not so much an album preview as a standalone document of a year spent expanding dance floor horizons over (a great many) seas. 3024’s milestone 10th release arrives in November with 2 brand new Martyn tracks as ‘Lefthander’ clatters in on heavily filtered drums, flickering high hats & garbled radio transmissions before a carousel synth melody breaks through the percussive murk accompanied by a roaming bass line that prioritises restraint over bludgeon. Dubbed out ambience rapidly takes root in the gaps between concrete snares & dissonant brass stabs as bass and synths elevate themselves for one last round of call & response sparring before dissolving back into barely audible dialogue. Steam age industrial monolith ‘Shook Up’ swaps slink for haunted metronomic brutality, snapping quickly into focus first with relentless kicks before bass akin to an Atari2600 playing Berghain looms over the clouded horizon. Offsetting the claustrophobia is the first hints of melody as an impossibly slight piano phrase creeps in, countering rhythmical pummelling with ghost in the machine delicacy. Classically spastic 808 tendrils are underpinned by soaring synth strings as proceedings draw to a juddering close. Capturing 3024’s musical progress with typical accuracy Erosie’s latest sleeve design is perhaps his best yet, echoing the back to basics theme with beautifully austere monochrome geometry curdling into something altogether more volatile at the edges.

DISF011 – Instra:mental / Von D – Voyeur / Like A Bird – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Skream’s label rounds of 2010 with a classic release. Its not often a gem like this comes along and its no surprise that fellow production collaborator Skream picked it up for his Disfigured Dubz imprint. Having been a regular floor filler over the past year within the emerging techno x dubstep scene, ‘Voyeur’ has been in high demand and finally sees the light of day to many peoples delight. It was one of Instra:mentals first dabbles with the 4/4 structure but has the maturity and qualities of a rediscovered 90s classic. Lazy robo beats set the tone for a slurred vocal that sounds like a drunken tourist in a red light district. At the same time, spacey atmospheres build in the background until they reach a peak and fade away into screaming stabs that get the crowd going mental. Expect to hear this for many years to come and could possibly reach classic status. Next up we have the AA side from upcoming artists Von D and Riscotheque. With their jazz/soul fueled take on Dubstep they’re building their own little niche within the scene and are sure to shine this year. ‘Like a bird’ mixes old skool vocal snippets, lurching fizzy mids and Detroit style stabs to create this monster that Skream and his fellow Djs have been rinsing to full effect over the last couple of months. A perfect balance of musical prowess and heavyweight beats and bass, this tune covers all angles nicely.¬¬

Finish copy promo. Following the critically acclaimed debut-release of BOB BHAMRAs WEST NORWOOD CASSETTE LIBRARY alias TEAL Recordings presents BLONDE ON BLONDE as its seminal release. This one is surely ment for the dancefloor: an addictive bassline, and a stomping house beat executed as were it a hidden gem dug out in a New York pawnshop. The ubiquitous RAMADANMAN hits the flipside under his PEARSON SOUND monkier, with a rehash of BLONDE ON BLONDE; with subtle references to the original version DAVID KENNEDY takes the remix to quite different, but equally interesting, places. SPEAKS003 – Sekta – Liquid Tek EP – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. No doubt looking for somewhere with a bit of political stability and a brighter economic future, 24 year old Polish producer Jan Dudzik aka Sekta recently joined many of his compatriots by leaving London and farking off back to his native Warsaw. Luckily, he left us a bottle of the finest vodka to remember him by, and a four track EP of stepping rhythms, fat bass and dubby atmospherics to help wash it down. Lead track ‘Liquid Tek’combines deep pads, pulsing subs, metallic riffs and broken beats into a floor friendly, but contemplative post dubstepper. Similar elements are combined in “ I Need’ , with a sliver of vocal adding an extra layer to the musical equation. ‘Hakka Riddim’ takes things a bit heavier, coiling beefy synth stabs around it’s insistent rhythms , and employing a spacey string interlude to break things up along the way. Closing track ‘Deep in the Woods’ takes the trace of D n B textures that run through the EP and lets loose, with full on, chopped up Amen breaks accompanying futuristic pads, robo-synths and occasional flourishes of cinematic strings that hint of Easter European nostalgia.

SLUDGE011 – Ed Solo & Deekline – Blow Out – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Hold tight the whistle crew, because Ed Solo & Deekline have dropped a meaty mighty ravey sizzler of a track. Blow Out is a sumptuous club banger that riffs off a ravey vocal, junglistic drums and epic pads and strings. The label’s 11th release skips smoothly between full and half time beats and also makes sure to deliver a healthy portion of the kind of bass mayhem you’ve come to expect from Sludge. On the flip, Deekline and Product.01 head out into peaktime ghetto house territory, ripping up a wobbly throwdown of epic proportions to send those hands into the air. Whatever your flavour, this one’s all about the heavy dancefloor ill behaviour. Get on it!

ZAUDIO022 – Genetix – Hangin – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo.

PHREAKS023 – Genetix – Squid Attack – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Genetix are the amazing and exciting new act that we have just been signed to Audio Phreaks. This 3 track EP is just a sprinkle of what they have lined up “Squid attack” is like nothing you’ve ever heard before and sounds like an underwater bass barrage big enough to sink the titanic! It’s an absolute monster that will eat you for breakfast, lunch, a light snack and then dinner! The production really shines through on their records and you can hear that they have been producing for quite some time. Then we have “All that remains” and “Keep it gutter” that are just as dirty and disgusting as “Squid attack” Watch ya bass bins im telling ya

SMOKE014 – Synkro – Angels VIP / Good Loving – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Synkro is no doubt one of the most talented producers out on the Dubstep circuit at the moment and this single here shows us what Synkro is all about. His profile has been blowing up no end recently and has had a release on Med School (Hospital) and has a track signed on D-Bridge’s imprint Exit, due for release late on the year. First up is a VIP mix of “Angels” that was originally released on a white label late 2009. The original was a favorite with the likes of Headhunter and Intra:mental that were both giving the tune regular rotation. The VIP mix here is a more zooped up, 2 step dance floor roller that sounds clean and smooth on the ear. Very impressive stuff! Then “Good Lovin” on the flip which has been a Synkro favorite of mine for a long time. It’s the side of Synkro that is says “sit back, relax and enjoy”. if you like it nice and mellow, “Good Lovin” is the one for you!

BSR001 – The Eerier Child – Rabid Dogs EP (12” & CD & Poster ) – 12″ Vinyl
The 13 track CD comes in a limited edition package including: a full colour movie poster, a special CD display and the new 12” record. The Eerier Child, a Rotterdam-based producer, now releases 3 new tracks on his newly co-founded label Black Sunday Recordings after previously releasing several successful tracks on labels Mindtrick Records and Redrum Recordz. In a still ongoing journey through various music styles, The Eerier Child found shelter in the bold realms of dubstep. In these very realms, he discovered a world where he could release his full power of fierce rhythms and colourful sounds capes drenched in an eerie atmosphere. Rabid Dogs drags you along, with daggering drums that lure you into uncontrolled excitement at times, and unsettling, yet highly addictive synth lines that make you feel chased by the somewhat darker sides of your own mind at others. This is not for the faint-hearted… The second track Dead and Buried starts off with a dubsound that develops into an energetic mix of driving rhythms and soothing, nostalgic female vocals. Smooth wobbles dance their way into the hearts of listeners. At first glance this seems to be a happy song.. but something’s not quite right… are there monsters lurking in the dark? Pieces takes you aboard an electro spaceship on a little trip to cloud-cuckoo-land. Swaying beats and distinctive horror sounds will sweep you on a dance floor of vast spaces capes, switching from four on the floor to a half time feel. and back.. Yes, this is all so unreal! CD: The album has its own distinguished sound and style that could loosely be described as “a soundtrack for a movie that doesn’t exist”. It uses Hip-hop and Dubstep related influences, but The Eerier Child just uses these minor elements to create more tension and flow to his tracks. To really experience the eerie and horroresque vibe caught on this album we dare you to “put on your headphones and get in a 40 minute trip”.

RED005 – ASC – Advent / The Glow – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Long time producer and innovator ASC steps to Pushing Red with two fantastic pieces of Detroit-tinged techno. He’s well known in many circles for his wonderful drum & bass releases which more recently have brought him success on such labels Exit, Nonplus & his own Auxilary. His is also known for other tempos and this release is pure evidence that he is just as deadly in this realm as his drum & bass! A. ADVENT: A punishing 4/4 kicks things off before distorted, crushing bass and effects propel this monster into Detroit territory! While this tune is a monster, everything is perfectly layered and everything within the tune makes sense. Reverbed keys and delayed effects pull everything together! Definitely one for the fans who like their beats with a little teeth! AA. THE GLOW: The Glow harks back to the glory days of Warp Records and mid 90′s techno & electronic. A subtle 4/4 keeps the momentum going while the bassline could workout any soundsystem. Lush keys and pads sit perfectly on top creating that wonderful melodic and nostalgia feel! Definitely one for fans of deeper, melodic techno!

AA ASC – The Glow
