RECIPE012 Skeptical / Pessimist – Cold One (Jubei Remix) / Zulu 12″ Vinyl
Skeptical’s ‘Cold One’ rubber-stamped his arrival on the drum & bass scene. With releases signed to Exit, Dispatch & 31 records, 2010 is shaping up to be his year. Man of the moment Jubei loved it so much, he wanted to try his hand at remixing it, his first ever remix to boot. The Metalheadz artist grabbed it with both hands and provided this monster reese classic! Hypnotic from the start & an almighty bass drop, if this is his first ever remix, then it won’t be his last! Pessimist is a young talent from Bristol, after receiving a few demos, we wasted no time in snapping him up. “Zulu” is one of the most epic drum & bass tunes of 2010. Hot 12!! DEAD023 Temper D – Break It Down 12″ Vinyl
For the 23rd outing on this imprint deadlyp turns to long time producer temper d, who has had a string of releases on his own imprint and thought it’s time to spread his wings a bit wider as he comes with 2 different tunes than you would expect from him. Both tracks have been doing damage on the dance floor as this 12 offers something for the tech heads and the jump up crew. ‘break it down’ is a techy tearout tune that does what it says on the tin, a short intro that gets straight to the point rolls then gives way to destroying bass, and crazy stabs. One to check for sure. ‘wanna say’ is a gritty styled jump up track . with flowing chords thru out the intro with a whispered vocal ‘ I know what you wanna say’ paired with the crisp beats that take you to the drop. Then all hell is let lose as the gritty b-line and the beats take control clever use of the vocal aid the tracks progress. This tune does serious damage on the floor!!! Support from Temper d , nicky bm, ash attack, to name a few!

LARTSEKRAD Rockwell – Reverse Engineering 12″ Vinyl
Pressed on heavyweight 180 gram vinyl. Artwork: Black Reverse Board sleeve, Bronze Pantone logo and text throughout, all sleeve and label information written backwards in keeping with the reverse concept. Cut in inside-out (record plays from centre label out to the edge) on a Scully Lathe. Release: Less a best kept secret, now a fully fledged artist of the moment Rockwell has been steadily building a reputation as one of the more progressive electronic artists around in 2010, with an ear for a different take on how to move dancefloors whilst also showing an adept ability at beat programming that is setting himself apart from his peers. Darkestral finally release one of the most talked about tracks on underground forums (10K plus posts on a DOA) and unleash the bewildering ‘Reverse Engineering’ – a track solely built from backwards parts, that has been delighting, confounding and confusing dancefloors the world over. Coupled with the polar opposite beauty of ‘Everything (& U)’, which continues the Darkestral love for contrasting sides on releases, and was recently licensed to FabricLive52, this track marks a stamp of quality on the burgeoning minimalist dnb sound by adding the emotional layer that Darkestral aa sides have become known for.

HBT026 Spktrm – Avant Futura / Iconia 12″ Vinyl
The second release of this mightky label for the fall of 2010. Gein presents the sounds of SPKTRM to showcase its diversity he wants to sign for his label. SPKTRM straight from the USA is already a well established name out there with releases on labels like Human / Habit / Project 51 / Evol Intent / Barcode / SS. Avant Futura takes us into the depths with its hard hitting kicks, rollin snares, bassline growls and the sax floating around in the atmosphere. The flip Iconia is another bassline fuelled hardhitter. Spooky intro introduces the massive bassline. Big bad heavy beats will pound the speaker to shreds. Habit is back and ready to kick ass and take names.

SIRENUK001PT2 Siren – Broken Silence Part 2 12″ Vinyl x 2
Part 2 of the Vinyl Eps’ featuring tracks taken from their debut album, “Broken Silence”, on their own Siren Records has been doing damage on the DJ circuit for some time now. Tracks such as ‘Gumball Rally’ and ‘Broken Silence’ have been staples in the sets of everyone from Andy C to DJ Marky to Fabio and Chase and Status, as well as the new breed of artist producers such as S.P.Y, Spor and Jubei. Over the last 10 years Universal Project are responsible for hits such as ‘Vessel’ on the Virus imprint, ‘Haunted Dreams’ on their own label Universal Project and an EP on DJ Hype’s True Playaz, as well as ‘Streetilfe’ with DJ Friction for Advanced Recordings and many Renegade Hardware smashers such as ‘Danger Chamber’, ‘Comin’ Thru’ and the Black Techno EP. The Universal Project sound is B-Boy breaks with techno elements and dubwise bass, and everything in between. Vicious Circle broke through in 2005 with their monster remix of Universal Project’s ‘Jackhammer’ and have been destroying dancefloors ever since with their unique sound. Releases such as ‘Between the Lines’ and the ‘Welcome to Shanktown’ EP on Renegade Hardware pushed them to the forefront of the tech dnb scene. Subsequent releases on Digital Soundboy, Critical and Quarantine displayed a diverse style that has helped establish them as heavy hitters across the board whilst collaborations with high profile artists such as Chase & Status, Dom & Roland, Fierce and most recently Jubei clearly demonstrate the respect they command from their peers. After spending a lot of time in the studio together Vice and Ruxspin decided to create a new guise for their own brand of rolling future funk. Siren is the result. Both artists in their own right have toured the world from the farthest reaches of Europe to the United States and Asia, consistently destroying dancefloors and gaining a reputation as masters of their craft. The aim of this duo is to cover all styles within the scene and not be constrained by subgenres, whilst still maintaining a dancefloor ethos which is true to their UK roots.

Once again Phunkfiction brings on a hot new talent: NotioN is known for combining deep and dark moods with a wide range of musical elements and influences. ‘Because’ is a sick half tempo track using an ultra catchy pitched down vocal sample and an outstanding sound design – one for the fans of Instra:mental and D-Bridge. ‘Iota’ is a very stripped down dancefloor tool still spreading a big amount of funk – head nodding guaranteed. Both tracks are getting support by many big DJs on the scene.

New D&B CD

RISECD03 Concord Dawn – The Enemy Within CD
Nestled within what old-world Englishmen would call The Antipodes, New Zealand is truly an exceptional place. Taking huge pride in their native musicians, radio stations are bound by law to give over a fixed percentage of airtime to New Zealand artists. This results in a rather special situation for independent dance music producers, such as Auckland raised Matthew Harvey, a.k.a. Concord Dawn. With a level playing field underground genres like drum & bass have thrived in New Zealand, with producers being lumped in alongside traditional pop stars and rock bands. It’s no overstatement to say that Concord Dawn is an institution in NZ, proven by the presales for ‘The Enemy Within’ on iTunes New Zealand which saw the album slot in at a rather healthy #2 just between Shihad (NZ’s biggest rock band) and Maroon 5. Featuring a selection of guest appearances, from fellow NZ D&B dons Bulletproof and Cern, to ‘80s pop star Rikki Morris ‘The Enemy Within’ provides a rich tapestry of tastes and flavours across the drum & bass spectrum that will prove to be just as popular on the world stage as it is at home.

After years of success in their relative drum and bass production outfits, Siren is a collaboration of Vice from Vicious Circle and Ruxspin from Universal Project. New Dubstep / Funky / Techno releases

NONPLUS009 Jimmy Edgar – +NXTLVLNXTLVL / My Balance (Last Priority) 12″ Vinyl
Hot off the back of his sexually charged XXX album which included the track ‘Hot Raw Sex’ of which Instra:mental provided one of many remixes, Jimmy Edgar has elevated the Nonplus catalogue with this superb two track 12”. a) Jimmy Edgar ‘+NXTLVLNXTLVL’ Upon listening to this track it’s obvious this guy oozes natural musical talent from every orifice. Jerky electro beats set the backing or playful chords and melodies and the odd bit of pitch bent Gfunkery, all spliced together with the trademark “on the fly” sounding sequencing like he’s played the whole track from start to finish off the top of his head. This is Jimmy Edgar doing what he does best and that is making raw music with his raw talent. aa) Jimmy Edgar ‘My Balance (Last Priority) – ‘My balance’ takes the tempo down somewhat and heres where the real sleaze begins. Wolf whistling synth lines, laid back bass and silky smooth drums merge into an orgy of aural pleasure. Think strip clubs, neon lights, and budget porn flicks and you’ll be someway toimagining what this track sounds like. Perfect backing track for a night between the sheets with that special someone.

DZ001 Data – Hedorah 12″ Vinyl
Data and the guys from Dubzilla bring two monsters from him to their first release. Both tracks have his trade mark production which is deep, dark and heavy. Minimal glichy drums and a grinding bline set you up for a ride then the sub bass cracks open your head! Little white lies has a crisp kick and snare that has time and space to create the scene, haunting vocals then take over with a killer bass this track is so deep you could drown in it. Acid techno samples flow in and out of the tune totally flipping the script from time to time.

Teaming up with SPL, Black Sun Empire bring you ‘Wasteland’, a track with an epic intro that drops into an apocalyptic vision of the future. PL010 Dubtek – Dubtek EP 12″ Vinyl
Paradise Lost Recordings is proud to present the first proper release from Seattle’s Dubtek: a 3-track EP in which Dubtek teams up with Australia’s finest, Droid Sector and Boot, as well as Italy’s Mouch to showcase three distinctive sounds. The lead track and a three-way collaboration, The Trancening brings together influences from progressive house/trance and mixes those with proper heavy subheavy dubstep to produce a tranced-up killer which will keep the most traditional dubstep fan satisfied while at the same time cause those more up for epic progressive and trance tunes to break out their glowsticks (well, we hope just in spirit!).  These three accomplished producers demonstrate both their technical prowess in the studio and their talents for stirring up a frenzy on the dancefloor.  The second drop just kills it! On the flip, Dubtek offers up two deeper tracks that are smooth as butter.  Smoke works on a number of different levels bringing in a beautifully constructed smooth as silk bassline to compliment melodic atmospherics and a garage-inspired vocal hook that are sure to bring smiles to those on the dancefloor.  He teams up with Mouch from Venice, Italy to bring us a brilliant, calculated dancefloor builder with dreamy arpeggios and ice-cold sci-fi fx and atmospherics – essential!

DRUNK020 Ekoplekz – Stalag Zero / Distended Dub 12″ Vinyl
300 hand-numbered copies for the world, each sheathed in individually hand-painted sleeves. No repress, means no repress. Punch Drunk, Bristol’s esteemed electronic music imprint, celebrates it’s 20th release with a strictly limited edition 12″ single. This double A-side is also the official debut release by shadowy Bristol-based experimental electronic musician Ekoplekz. As such, it represents something of a departure for the label, for here is an artist who shuns modern digital production techniques in favour of primitive analogue devices, lo-fi cassette recorders and a spontaneous, improvised approach to composition. Taking inspiration from ‘Radiophonic’ soundtracks, early dub reggae, krautrock and post-punk D.I.Y. experimentors like Cabaret Voltaire, Throbbing Gristle and Robert Rental, Ekoplekz is intent on introducing a new generation to the kind of raw eruptions of sound that first gave birth to the UK’s electronic underground over 30 years ago.

HENCH022 Mensah – Digital Dreamer 12″ Vinyl
Mensah’s debut release on the HENCH imprint, Pulse 80’s, turned heads with its stylish production and out-of-the-box approach. His follow-up release, ‘Untitled Future Funk EP’, was all the talk on the blogs and his remix of Baby D’s ‘Let me be your Fantasy’ has been hailed as one of the hallmark dubstep tracks of 2010. With each new release Mensah’s studio skills and fresh thinking stand out ever clearer. This latest offering will be no disappointment… A. DIGITAL DREAMER A dreamy synth-line commences ‘Digital Dreamer’, which immediately sets the scene for one of Mensah’s more ethereal productions. The harmonic lead-line builds into an other-worldly riff before releasing that tripped-out, bouncing bass rhythm. Synths let loose overhead, twisting and turning the track into the funky number that it is. Once again, something different from the man like Mensah… AA1. KASHMIR (W/NOAH D) Teaming up with US producer, Noah D, the duo creates an echoey and foreboding backdrop to ‘Kashmir’. The mystic vibe quickly graduates with a captivating bassline, weaving its way through the frequencies. Kashmir has achieved that perfect balance between being musicallyintriguing and packing punch for the dancefloor. AA2. BIG UP THE GOONS A familiar arpeggio gently makes way for a gully-goon vocal. You’re then met with a shuddering bassline that goes a long way to create a haunting yet driven soundtrack. Forwardmoving and weighty, the mid-section provides a brief pause for reflection before reverting back to fully-flexed low-end funk.

As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
The first DSM release of the new decade sees them continue to push leftfield, forward thinking drum & bass. 2009 was big year for Data with releases on Revolution, Horizons, premier dubstep label Tempa aswell as the mighty Metalheadz and for his first release of 2010 he returns to DSM with two tracks that cement his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative producers in drum & bass at the moment. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscent of late 90’s techstep. For the AA side he teams up with newcomer Kingsin for ‘Baggage’, and it is perhaps Data at his most experimental with sharp, staccato, almost off beat drums and haunting synth lines coupled with a his trademark growling bass. Both sides show a diversity in his production and goes to prove he is not one to stick to any particular style, but rather constantly innovate and push boundaries with his music.

BLR003R K Zero 9 / Eclipse – Outrage / Outrage & Digital Backlash Records 12″ Vinyl
Following up their critic ally-acclaimed Red Letter LP, Digital and Outrage link up for Outrage’s Backlash Records with “Eclipse”, a dub-soaked number to start 2010 proper! Lead by a thumping kick, this one is a dub-lovers dream, flowing with loads of effects, echo and perfectly timed ragga vocals. There’s a lot of space in this one, allowing the elements to breathe, and the atmospherics feel like the soundtrack to the moon overtaking the sun. On the flip, Outrage’s “K Zero 9” finally makes it way to the record bins. This one has been tearing things down in its slow-burning venom, and is the perfect lick to get the party started, or send a ready crowd into a frenzy with its hypnotic bass. While the dub-side of Drum & Bass seems to be almost forgotten, its good to know that the torchbearers are still around, injecting tough riddims for those who know. -Khal (dogsonacid.com)

New DnB Promos

MODULE002 The Cleaner / Raindance – Hybris Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Modulations is the proud younger sibling of Critical music launched in 2010. The label got a head start with Lenzman and now brings yet more vacuum-packed freshness, this time from new boy Hybris. An awesome second release for the fledgling imprint that’s got people talking throughout the scene. The schedule for Modulations will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. First up is ‘The Cleaner’ with sharp drums and that dangerous subliminal, almost toxic bassline. Serving as the perfect accompaniment to ‘Raindance’ with its thunder cloud atmospherics, it has the electricity, the thickness in the air and delivers the quiet before the stormy drops. The single is a perfecect combination, even meteorologically, and should make any drum and bass connoisseur fidget with anticipation for more from Hybris. ‘Raindance’ is a hauntingly beautiful take on what we would expect from darkside of drum and bass. The tribal vocals and broken beat percussion make it a tune to be remembered with subtle but sick bass and a fantastic spatial awareness. It shows how less can be so much more with a classy production prowess that many drum and bass veterans still strive for. So hold tight and be prepared to be carried away in the hypnotic magic of ‘Raindance’.
DJ support from Logistics, Nutone, Kasra, Alix Perez, Cyantific, Rockwell and more.

INMIN001 Only Words – Blue Motion Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After a lengthy successful run with Influenza Media and Influenza Digital, label owner, Eros comes through with a brand new sub-label for 2010, Influenza Minus. Targeted to a deeper, minimal, experimental sound, the imprint will feature an A list of talent, including Triad, Brandon Miles, Tricky Pat, Blue Motion, Mister Sizef, Unquote, Glen E Ston, Decem, Dominic Ridgeway, Eleven8, Molecular Structures, Material, Reza, CJ Weaver, Omnius and many more. Influenza Minus will be available in vinyl, digital and compact disc format. If you take a trip back to Influenza Media 007, you might remember the fantastic uptempo vibes of Blue Motion’s ‘Only Words VIP.’ Influenza Minus 001 revisits this glorious track, bringing forth the original mix and a remix by Triad, the collaboration of Basti (which is also a collaboration between Madmen and Poets from Phunkfiction) and Henree. The trio has music out on Deep Soul Music, Horizons Music, Critical, X-tinction and Engine Music, and one of their most recent releases Omar featuring Estelle – Lay It Down (Triad Remix) has just been released on Peppermint Jam. In Blue Motion’s original mix, progressive, steppy vibes roll this one in before the melodic hook takes over. Very minimal in nature with a warm bassline, samples and piano lines build endlessly and seamlessly before making way for Triad’s teched out sound. A moody bassline sets the atmosphere with arpeggios of angelic voices, leading into a moment of silence before the drop. Fans of Critical Recordings, Subtitles and Quarantine would love this one.

NXG006 Superbad / Morning Light – Intelligent Manners / CJ Styles NexGen 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. NexGen Music touches down with its latest lick of soulful, sophisticated Drum & Bass featuring one of Russian Federation’s hottest DJ’s & Producers – Intelligent Manners and new artist CJ Styles from the original home of drum & bass – England, U.K. Following on the back of the label’s last release from Kyro & D.A., NexGen return with two absolutely heavy dance-floor killers ‘Superbad’ & ‘Morning Light’. NexGen Music releases always deliver sublime production and musical quality and this latest release is no exception. NexGen always prefers not to ‘name drop’ supporting DJ’s, as they believe in letting the music doing the talking. Truss….. There aren’t many liquid / soulful vibes spinning DJ’s that don’t have this one in the box!
A. INTELLIGENT MANNERS – ‘SUPERBAD’ – 2010 Russia meets 1970’s American rare groove-funk-soul = PURE JAZZED UP DRUM-FUNK! This tune features a tantalizing build up laced with heavy rolling drums and clever slabs of funk coming at you from all directions. The tune then drops into crazed funk mayhem with sharp, crisp drums and a deep sub bass that would churn any hardcore worm-eating stomach. This is the proper rinse-out and the ultimate ‘Drum-Funk’ tune for the summer. A must have…
AA. CJ STYLES – ‘MORNING LIGHT’ – Just as the title of the track suggests – you are greeted with warm, quiet but somewhat eerie tones exactly what you may expect to hear on a spring / summer morning but don’t be fooled! Hard crisp drums gently enter the build up with nasty bass stabs floating in and out of the mix followed by a heavy drop with multiple bass-lines and aggravated synths. While the bass is deep the gentle tones effortlessly weave in and out of the track creating a very well executed musical composition. This is a top maiden release from CJ Styles of whom we will be seeing more quality releases in the near future. Watch out for future NexGen releases featuring Qumulus, Earth Leakage Trip, D.A, Clart & mSdoS, Eastcolors, Kyro, Matt Doubt, Kubatko, plus many others.

HDB034 Hylo / Suzuran (LV & Quarta 330 Remix) – LV & Quarta 330 / Dong HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Two collaborative tracks from Quarta 330 and LV, made when the pair met the day after Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary party in November last year. These tunes exemplify the kind of meeting of minds where the best of both producers comes to the surface, as Quarta 330’s 8-bit abstraction and melodic sense contrasts nicely with LV’s characteristic lush figures and shuffling rhythms. ‘Hylo’ finds 8-bit melodies made from rebuilt Gameboys and sonar-like bleeps weaved into the crunchy snap of a reverse drum beat and warm chords, breaking down into a sonorous motif before stepping up the pace once more. It’s an energetic mix of brittle and lush sounds. On the AA side, ‘Suzuran’ is a joint remix of Quarta 330’s own remix of Japanese chiptunes artists Dong. LV places the slurring space pop of the Japanese vocoder vocal melody inside a remix constructed from syncopated drums and offkey bleeping patterns. The results are catchy and alien, as melodic sweetness is juxstaposed with the tension of the setting.

RAMP034 Fast Motion – Becoming Real Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. Becoming Real is a young producer residing in a forgotten suburbia, busy channeling his very own postapocalyptic vision of London. A spectre-like entity flitting between a range of electronic frequencies, his self-termed ‘Ghost-Step’ sound is as much influenced by a conceptual future dystopia as by luminaries Zomby &Mount Eerie. Re-imagining the iciest of grime synths through a warped K Records aesthetic, Becoming Real has forged a frozen universe that still retains an unequivocally human feel. Charged with future-dread, this is music for seas drowned in oil, tar-coated forest landscapes, and a prophesised world of underwater clubs and haunted dancefloors. After a sold out debut white label release last year, Becoming Real is ready to emerge in 2010 with the release of ‘Fast Motion’ / ‘Jen’s Clock’, backed with a Scratcha DVA remix of Fast Motion.

Komonazmuk drops a tough slice of deep, stepping, and melodic dubstep for our 11th release… With his history in rave culture stretching back to the oldskool days, through releases on Hardleaders & Moving Shadow with Ice Minus, right up to his current cutting edge productions, Keiran Lomax aka Komonazmuk has got his fingers in many musical pies. Having had big releases on scene-leaders like Tempa, and his debut album coming on H.E.N.C.H. later this year, his versatility as a producer and engineer is second to none. Teaming up with Appleblim for remix work has resulted in stunning reworks of artists as varied as Bonobo, Brendon Moeller, and Harmonia & Brian Eno, for labels such as Ninja Tune, Francois Kevorkian’s Wave Music, & Will Saul’s Aus Music. In fact after Komonazmuk & Appleblim remixed Lee Jones & Nick Hoppner’s My My project for Aus Music, Lee Jones returned the musical favour with this stunning deeper than deep house rework of Dance Too… With a residency at Fabric, and regularly playing all over the world, 2010 is looking great for Komonazmuk! A producer that can flex to any side if he wants to and for his Subway debut he concocted 2 heavyweight dancefloor monsters that will leave the crowd begging for more. “Recovery” strikes like a ton of bricks. HRMN012 On The Low – Randy Barracuda Harmonia 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After a decade of bitter tears and hopeless trying our Finnish funkster Randy Barracuda has finally reached his ultimate goal as an artist. He has managed to combine successfully the music of his two favourite composers: Klaus Schulze and Lil’ Jon. ‘Impossible’, You may say. Well, don’t believe the hype. Take a listen to Streisand Effect’s booming crunk beats, heavy basses, epic synthesizer leads and cristallic arpeggios and choose for yourself. Dubstep – hero Tes La Rok’s outstanding remix stays true to the original but adds some extra dubby aesthetics to Randy’s storming soccer stadium skweee vibes. Backside of the record is dominated by more moody and naturalistic atmospheres. Tako To Ama (The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife) is Randy’s homage to the grandiose tradition of Japanese tentacle erotica. In its Asiatic moods and sharp synthesizer stabs You can almost feel the slippery tentacles of an octopus wandering around in your bodily cavities! Record comes to an end with Lebensraum, an eight minute long meditative disco reggae. On Lebensraum the listener finds a totally new aspect of Randy Barracuda’s aural art: gone are the rapid staccato melodies and usual stiff funkiness. Maybe Credit00, a mysterious East-German bongo player, gave the track its naturalistic charm and the comfy aura of a forest in the springtime.

New Dubstep / Funky / Techno CD

DPCD001 “My Style” 23 Upfront Dubstep tracks mixed by Caspa CD + BONUS DVD – Caspa Dub Police Records CD
Caspa’s success was no fluke though, in fact you’d be hard pressed to find a harder-working person in the industry, having built up his ever-growing empire from scratch. In 2010 he is a man in demand, off the back of his debut artist album last year “Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening!” he has remixed the likes of Deadmau5, Depeche Mode, Mike Snow and most recently U.S superstar Ludacris. He’s helped bring through acts such as Emalkay, The Others, D1 and Subscape through his labels Dub Police and Subsoldiers and via his regular sell-out label roster club shows, most notably the pre-mentioned Fabric residency. His DJ schedule is still out of control with an average of 15-20 shows per month, booked up 6-months in advance and this summer the shows are only getting bigger. In June he’ll make his debut at Sonar festival… On the main stage… In between Dizzee Rascal and The Chemical Brothers – things have changed for the boy from Chiswick. And on to “My Style!”, the brand new mix series from Dub Police that once again plans to break the mould of what a dubstep mix can be with a number of acts already being lined up for future editions. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves; this is No.1 and who better to take the controls than the label head honcho Caspa. In the mix he takes us through the full spectrum of dubstep sound with dance floor slayers from the likes of Skream, Emalkay and Doctor P through to the more eclectic sounds of Joy Orbison, D1 and Joker. Of course there’s an untold amount of exclusives to boot, giving fans an early preview of some of the biggest records set to blow up in the summer months, with brand new material from the Dub Police / Subsoldiers camp.
From the 23 tracks selected we see Caspa couple upfront and unheard material with some of the scene’s biggest anthems of the last year with Emalkay’s “When I Look At You’, Joy Orbison’s now classic ‘Hyph Mngo’ and Caspa’s massive remix of Deadmau5 “I Remember” all featuring throughout the mix. Seamlessly blended, Caspa nails it with a 100% live, 1-take exceptional DJ mix using (as ever) only dub plates, a mixer and a set of 1210’s.
The mix will also come with a bonus DVD, featuring exclusive content from Caspa and all the Dub Police crew. The DVD is Exempt for classification: Educational Music Documentary.

New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT044 Canopy – FD, Hydro & Keza Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
New blood alert! Bringing through yet more untapped talent is the people’s choice, Critical Music, who bring us the debut release from a trio of boxfresh producers that’s already been doing damage with those lucky enough to have it. With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one. Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special. Then on to ‘Remorse’ and the guys spook things out a little with a ghostly whispered samples and an off-kilter break rolling under paranoid synth stabs and pads. As more booming subs kick in the pace picks up with shuffling snares and heavily filtered sonics that fill the speakers to drive it forward hard, while still retaining a huge sense of space that’ll see this in the DJ boxes at the deeper end of the spectrum.
Big support from Nu:Tone, Jubei, Spectrasoul, Alix Perez, Kasra, Logistics, Sabre and more.

As a promoter, he helped to throw some of the first raves and jungle events in the East Coast’s Mid-Atlantic region. And, as a musician, he is responsible for numerous releases and remixes on labels such as Vibez, Covert Operations, Vampire, Nexus (Good Looking), Levitated, Red Mist, Testflight, Elektra/Warner Brothers and more. CYAN033 Dark Times (State Of Mind Remix) – Bulletproof, Mindscape & Tiki Cyanide Recordings 12″ Vinyl
As a follow up remix 12” to the “DARK TIMES-DESPERATE MEASURES” LP, Bulletproof and Cyanide Recordings enlisted the remixing skills of two names synonymous with pushing the boundaries in the art of cutting edge beats. Fellow Kiwis, STATE OF MIND step up to the plate to deliver an absolutely tearing rollout of one of LP title tracks “DARK TIMES”. Comparable in style to tracks like “Bring it on” this remix has been smashing its way around the world for quite some time now, and state of mind show why they are such a force to be reckoned with when it comes to remixing hard hitting Dance floor tunes. Definitely one of their finest remixes to date. On the flipside, Still enjoying the success of his new album on NEOSIGNAL, Cyanide welcomes back to the roster, the one and only “MISANTHROP”. His rendition of Bulletproof Psidream & Doses LINE OF SIGHT takes the idea of remixing to a whole new level. Incorporating minimal elements of the original and giving them that futuristic Misanthropic twist is why he was the man signed up for the job.

RDR001 Your Way / Daydreamin – Netsky Radar Records 12″ Vinyl
Drum&bass has been booming in Belgium for some time. At the spearhead of the movement is Murdock, a dj who has been a weekly guest on Belgian national radio for years, and plays to thousands of people at all of Belgium’s biggest festivals, year in, year out. Coinciding with the release of his Jungle Fever mix cd, he now launches Radar Records, inspired by the incredible talent of his protege Netsky, an artist who has risen through the ranks of drum&bass like few have done before him. It will come to no surprise that the first release on this newly founded label is by the hands of this prodigy and with the smooth stylings of ‘Your Way’ (over 140.000 hits on Youtube) and the massive dancefloor liquid anthem that ‘Daydreamin’ is set to become, this looks like a sure winner. In the future more Netsky oddities will appear on Radar, but Murdock himself and friends slash artists like Jenna G are destined to make an appearance as well. The first 12inch has already gained support by Grooverider, Fabio, London Electricity and many more.

CRIT045 Redlines – Total Science Ft. Riya Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. The original jungle dons push all the right buttons here as they team up with Riya for a sumptuous vocal excursion like no other. ‘Redlines’ has already been given the thumbs up by the likes of Mistajam and Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1/1xtra and it’s not hard to see why. A solid locked groove rolls from the start on this one with a polished break and beautiful melancholic piano hook that draw you in before the real treat begins; when Riya’s gorgeous vocal drops in your heart will melt.
Effortless audio bliss for all the lovers out there. Things then toughen up 10-fold on the flip as the Total Science party boys drop ‘Skinz’, a crisp and dry piece of Bristol-esque D&B with a thugged-out b-line that’s had clubs shaking all over for the past six months.

MODULE001 More Than I Can Take / Silhouette – Lenzman Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Critical Music are proud to announce for 2010 their all-new sibling imprint, Modulations. Already known as a camp with the utmost values in exceptional music and artistic design, Modulations promises to be something very special indeed. The schedule will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. So first up is the much touted Lenzman who’s been handed the privilege of opening up Modulations for business and what a job he’s done. ‘More Than I Can Take’ is a gorgeous piece of subtle audio bliss that sets the standard high for future releases to come. Light pads, sparkling key tones and a staggered break pave the way on the intro up to a luscious drop of warm bass and a male vox. Things drift smoothly on with the addition of a gnarly mid-range that toughens things up a little whilst all the time retaining the initial spacial, deep vibe. Lovely.‘Silhouette’ on the other side then takes things in a slightly moodier direction with a simple 2-step break leading the way but with more of those ethereal pads wafting over the top before a sinsitar bline takes over with some nasty edits and a souled out vocal sample to calm the nerves. An awesome way to finish off the first release of what will no doubt be a highly collectable electronic music label. DJ support from Goldie, Logistics, Kasra, Nutone, Spectrasoul, Friction and many more.

DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscenbt of late 90’s techstep.

Finish copy. Following up their critically-acclaimed Red Letter LP, Digital and Outrage link up for Outrage’s Backlash Records with “Eclipse”, a dub-soaked number to start 2010 proper! Lead by a thumping kick, this one is a dub-lovers dream, flowing with loads of effects, echo and perfectly-timed ragga vocals.

On the flip, “Broken Memory” was given its first exclusive airing by Oneman on Radio 1 to much acclaim, and takes more of a straight up approach, and retains all of the fluid C64 chiptune beauty.
DJ SUPPORT FROM ROB DA BANK, ONEMAN, BRACKLES, SINDEN, FLOATING POINTS, CLOUDS, MARY ANNE HOBBS.

DP037 Circle K – Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
After the massive success of his first Dub Police single (The Future & Scattah), Trolley Snatcha steps up for his second release with another dose of bass to make your face ache. ‘Circle K’ takes no prisoners with its outrageously sick basslines and crashing beats, and has been battered on dubplate by the likes of Caspa, Benga, Skream, Rusko and all the usual suspects – absolutely essential track! Trolley Snatcha goes all out on the flip though with the dubwise sounds of ‘We Rock The Forest’ with its skanking intro, before a no holes barred drop of face melting bass. Again gaining support from all the big guns – a massive release from Trolley and the Dub Police camp.

LAB010 Burglar – Truth Aquatic Lab Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Wetting the appetite for the forthcoming ‘Puppets’ album, Aquatic Lab dish up two varied future bass experiments from Truth. First up ‘Burglar’ a tech-stepping original production bedded with sharp snapping drums & snares that bite straight through the rave atmospherics. Bass wise this piece of kit is extreme to say the least, signature bulbous sub action. ‘Dead Silence’ comes from a charged half step angle with complex percussion. The track features a glossy synth line. At it’s core it evolves to unleash deadly licks of bass at opportune moments. Both cuts are a prime pick for the steppers. Getting huge support from Mala, Skream, N-type, Hatcha and Joe Nice.

SENSELESS012 Zombiezz EP – Kanji Kinetic Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of future-bassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! NB New Era and Zombiezz are being released as a split with our good pals Tigerbeat6, thanks guys.
PLAYS FROM: Raffertie, Starkey, Slugabed, Donna Summer, Kid606, Pirate Soundsystem, Chrissy Murderbot, The McMash Clan, Warlock, Subeena.

3024008 Titan EP – lllum Sphere 3024 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. “Titan.” Sometimes titles are just perfect, aren’t they? It’s a huge, sprawling beast that seems to inhale every mutant strain of bass music it can and exhales it in one exhilarating 4:20 blast. It opens with ominous rumbling and 8-bit bleeps (and crickets?) before ambient chords ascend out of the depths, dragging a twisting electro synth with them. That pulsating, spiraling synth slinks its way through the gossamer membranes of the track, contracting and expanding as needed, its bulbous, serrated ends emanating industrial howls like ghosts of rave sirens. Clinking percussion desperately tries to keep the track in line, but it bursts from its foundations for split seconds, causing little blips and beeps, interruptions, skitters, grasping feverishly at its surroundings; eventually the percussion splinters into fragments and things open out for a few moments, but a synthline this big can’t stay dormant for long, returning with hymnal chords in behind it, hovering, until the percussion comes back in, lockstep in with the riff as if resigned to the fact that it can never overcome something this massive. On previous releases, Illum Sphere’s fallen more into the post-Dilla FlyLo camp (what are we calling this stuff these days anyway?). His two EPs on Fat City have been impressive, but this new threetrack release on Martyn’s 3024 label sees him moving into slightly more dance-oriented waters, appropriating techno into his repertoire of subtly stomping tunes. ” “Go Killum” acts as a brief interlude, two minutes of mangled synth strewn about a deserted battlefield, canned, distorted gunshots taking the place of drums. The track takes neon brightness and submerges it in murky waters, the distorted beat only letting up for a few seconds of melodic prettiness before it stomps back in and chokes the life out of it all over again, until the blue turns to grey. It feels a little bit like a palate cleanser, a little morsel of whirling synths to clear out your tastebuds for the next psychedelic main dish. “Technopolis” is just that, its tumbling piano keys hoisted aloft on a pulsing techno beat and misty-eyed chords. He even finds time to set bass notes off like depth charges, overbalancing the track and scattering silvered notes onto the breeze. It wafts along like a classic techno track, gentle drums and glossy synths, as gentle strings pluck a nearly inaudible melody deep beneath the surface, in the sewers and slums of the technopolis, the unheard masses keeping the tune afloat. It’s an evocative track, dipping its toes into the past but never falling deep into the whirlpool of nostalgia, and even if it did, the indefatigable energy of “Titan” would pull it out right away, like a crazed dog on a leash.

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. This track says more about Mensah’s production style than any of his previous releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky. Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D, Von D and more.

AA2 Mensah – Untitled Future Funk

RWINA007 Goin Out EP – SRC Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Fresh from Birmingham comes young talent SRC delivering the ‘Goin Out EP’ for the Rwina imprint. Stuffing old school 8-bit sensibilities and new school Grime attitude into a blender and hitting puree, SRC slings sizzling synths and punchy basslines with devastating effect. From the casual g-funk of ‘Goin Out’ and ‘Sort of a Start’ to the skank-u-like shuffle of ‘Facepalm’ and the Danjah-esque ‘Where’s the Remote?’, this EP contains Grime riddims that will fill every dancefloor with hypercolors, power-ups and neon-lights, like Pacman duelling with Mario in the dark. With all this in mind, SRC makes the case that he’s one to watch for the future, and with a workrate to match the hype, you can expect a lot more where this came from! DJ support comes from the distinguished likes of Starkey, Swindle, Elijah & Skilliam, Taz Buckfaster, Baobinga, Terror Danjah and many more…

Here is a recent review from Resident Advisor‘s Max Bacharach:

Speaking to The End in mid-2008, Exit boss and Autonomic mastermind Darren White, AKA dBridge, had these words to say about his beloved genre: “…when I listen to tunes from the last two or three years and compare them to tunes from the era that I believe it was at its most interesting, they don’t even compare. This isn’t music that people outside of our scene can look to, and that’s a big beef of mine.” Jump ahead to early 2010 and—thanks to the increasingly wide-ranging output of Instra:mental, SpectraSoul, Data and co—things don’t look quite so bleak. In fact, we might forgive Mr White for having been a little overly pessimistic: it’s his label that gave birth to 2009′s best drum & bass full-length, an album which, in drawing together influences as diverse as Ed Rush, OMD and Autechre (and wilfully refusing to tick any obvious dance floor boxes at that), positively commands attention.

Judging by the maturity of the thirteen pieces on display, the culprit—Australia’s Cam McLaren—is no newcomer to the scene. Take the driving “From a Distance,” a darkly somatic voyage into post-apocalyptic diaspora (think Vangelis remixed by Photek, or vice versa) made in collaboration with fellow NonPlus operative ASC, or the dreamy “Lime Green,” which for over three minutes swirls and hovers in a state of blissed-out abandon before a slinky rim-tap snap lumbers into view. Clearly, no easy points are out to be scored. Things are equally unyielding at the slower, garage-leaning tempo of “Feeling Like We Do,” which sounds like Burial under general anaesthetic (a good thing, believe me), and the stuttering, morphine-addled “Short Lived,” perhaps the darkest piece on what, at times, is a doggedly bleak album.

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. Opener “Long Lies,” although fragile, offers a tentative glimpse of hope, like the first light of morning breaking over an uncertain horizon, while “Fog,” arriving deep into proceedings, serves to alleviate the mounting tension with flickering keys and warm, glowing subs. Those in search of dance floor firepower, meanwhile, need look no further than the T2-drenched techstep growl of “Pseudo Echo” (a lethal, stripped-back roller), or the hyper-compressed bass dynamics of “Reflex Reaction,” which no doubt benefits from Instra:mental’s recent excursions into full-blown stepping territory. Sure, it’s not your average main room fodder, but, patently, this is not your average drum & bass LP. It’s far, far better than that.

In fact, there’s only one real blooper on the album: the schmaltzy “Life Is Timing,” which, sadly, delves a little too far into the champagne sipping terrain evoked by its title, and fails to integrate with what, taken in whole, is a remarkably coherent piece of work. What marks it out—and to a degree which, in the recent history of drum & bass, only dBridge’s The Gemini Principle equals—is its refusal to make concessions in the name of sales, airplay, MC compatibility and such like. There are no “big tunes,” no crushing breaks, no epic drops and, most pleasingly in a genre blighted by trite samples, no vocals. It’s simply one man’s vision of dark, futuristic bass music, and a powerful articulation—indeed, the most powerful one yet—of the Autonomic sound. Music that those outside the scene can, and really should, look to “.

BCHEM001 Bad Chemistry / Fear – Gein Bad Chemistry 12″ Vinyl
“Man will begin to recover the moment he takes art as serious as physics, chemistry, or money” The wait is finally over. With a mindset of D.I.Y. and a vision of the future, drum and bass producers GEIN unleash their new record label BAD CHEMISTRY RECORDINGS on the world’s ears. And with five years of production credit, as well as 5 years of record label management with HABIT RECORDINGS, the trio is set to stir up the drum and bass scene with a conceptual label that defies people’s set standards. With Bad Chemistry, GEIN is turning heads all across the board with collaborations you would come to expect, never expect, as well as new solo material that breaks stereotypes. And with support from major players in the drum and bass world, the hype is growing daily. The first release is the fitting “Bad Chemistry” produced by GEIN, backed with “Fear” with additional production by newcomers Biolysis. “Bad Chemistry” is a neurotic techy monster that is definitely made for the dancefloor, with a demented breakdown that keeps the crowds screaming for more. “Fear” is what happens when evil meets futurism, with heavy beats and sinister basslines. And this is just the beginning. With forthcoming collaborations with Tech Itch & Jakes, The Chosen, Audio, Mayhem, The Sect, SPKTRM, Counterstrike, Cooh, as well as solo tracks from GEIN, SPKTRM, Demo & Ewun, and more, Bad Chemistry Recordings is ready to prove to the world that not all things can be explained… bad chemistry is good chemistry.

DW02 Jealous Eyes (Utah Jazz Remix) – Smooth DrumWise 12″ Vinyl
The second DrumWise release with a bit different flavour, brings what’s finest in drum and bass. Utah Jazz remix of Jealous Eyes is a proper liquid roller with catchy vocals and funky piano theme. After the intro, the bass lands deep in the groove, and builds a perfect connection with the rhythmic section. The Piano shortly moves away but soon comes back to create an unforgettable romantic mood. As in the first release Smooth’s colab was a bit darker. This time on the B side his own masterpiece is light and groovy. A Melodic intro with violins and smooth pads go into a heavy rhythmic conjunction. After the breakdown the story continues with a perfect ‘disco’ build-up and finalise in a passionate synergy of beats and melodies.

exit018
EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

darkestralex001
DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

LUCKYDEVIL007 Liberty City Blues – Data / Incident & Paul SG Lucky Devil 12″ Vinyl
After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. From the outset the tune just bubbles with menace and keeps on building and evolving throughout. A pure bass-heavy slice of proper jungle. “Autumn Drops” is a soulful roller that shows that this crew are ones to watch in 2010. Full of melancholy, icy vibes and a subtle basslinethat gets right under your skin, this track is a firm favourite for this year.

lb005
LB005 All Ends EP – Limewax & Current Value L B Recordings 12″ Vinyl x 2
Triple Vision proudly welcomes L B Recordings to the drum’n bass roster. Limewax is the man behind this label. This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. You will probably never hear a set of these guys without at least 3 Limewax tunes in it. After a series of serious 12″ he released his greatly anticipated ‘Scars on the horizon’ album on Technical Freak. Things just got messier from that and nowadays mister Limewax is touring the world with his razor sharp beats, strange offbeat like rhythm patterns and ghastly soundscapes.
For this brand new double pack EP Limewax teams up with German Angstgegner Current Value. Current Value has been releasing his particular drum’n bass since the late 90ties on labels like Position Chrome and is now seen as one of the pioneers of this hard drum’n bass style. 2012, the day of Silence is the name of his new album and is due to be released any day now. One thing is for sure: this EP is not for the faintharted. Make sure to tighten your seatbelts, say goodbye to you dear ones and let the music take you to new dimensions.

ex7002
EX7002 Swagga – Excision & Datsik EX7 12″ Vinyl
Vinyl copies of EX7001, Excision – ‘Yin Yang’, sold out in a matter of weeks, while the digital release has been sitting pretty at the top of the Beatport dubstep chart ever since it was dropped. Now, following on from their immense first 12”, EX7 is back with an even more impressive pair of dance floor killers. EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. The A side, ‘Swagga’, was a feature in Excision’s DJ sets on his recent UK tour as sweaty crowds of teenagers rushed the decks shouting “Play Swagga!” in anticipation of its filthy bassline combinations (we kid you not, we feared for our lives…). Not only that, but ‘Swagga’ is the only non-Rusko track that Rusko’s been battering on all his recent radio mixes; for proof just check out his recent Breezeblock mix for BBC Radio 1. Teaming up with fellow Canadian, Datsik, once again on the flip, Excision creates another mechanoid-influenced stomper that hails the beginning of Armageddon. Monster bass and super-hard beats are what ‘Invaderz’ is all about, another piece of heavy artillery for Excision & Datsik’s sonic armoury. **Watch out for Excision & Datsik remixes for CTRL-Z & The Freestylers and Wu Tang Clan hitting the streets soon.**

ear012
EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. Support from: Pinch, Loefah, Mary Anne-Hobbs, Plastician, N-Type, RSD and many more.

osmuk007
OSMUK007 Life Continuum – Kryptic Minds Osiris Music UK 12″ Vinyl
Kryptic Minds first release since their highly anticipated ‘One Of Us’ Album on Loefah’s Swamp81 label. Kryptic Minds show they have many strings to their bow in the shape of this killer 2 track 12” on their own Osiris Music uk imprint. X_Life Continuum shows the guys going in deep with hard synth manipulation, warm pads and haunting choir which glides in and out effortlessly through the mix. Best listened to in a dark room, with a massive sound system, for people who like to feel the bass rattling they’re chest! Y_Wondering Why this is the yang of the flip, with a different feel altogether, in what only can be described as beautiful! With a skippy half time beat, and the sense of emotion from the off. As soon as the needle hits the edge of the record you know you are in for an emotional six minute journey. With a ghost like female vocal that glides through the track like a hot knife through butter. One for the head phones but also rocks the dance.
DJ support: Youngsta, Loefah, Mala, Headhunter, N – Type, Pinch, Distance. Mary Anne Hobbs.

FAISTY002 Suntime – Dom Faisty Records 12″ Vinyl
Faisty Records returns with it’s second offering of up front bass music, featuring two tracks crafted by DJ and Producer DOM. Suntime is a dark, brooding stomper sure to give your subs a workout whilst the flip side, Tall Tales has a lighter more energetic feel that is sure to bring a crowd to life. The Brighton based producer DOM has had a string of successful releases both on Faisty Records and on Clandestine Cultivations and his tracks regularly get crowds moving in clubs everywhere. Watch out in the near future for forthcoming releases on Faisty, Clandestine and L2S.

CLDUB009 Coastal Dubs Part 1 – Ultrasound / Hizzle Guy Clandestine Cultivations 12″ Vinyl
The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. With big support from the leftfield of Dubstep and tastemakers like Belgiums Bunzero. HIZZLE GUY is a young Brighton based DJ who along with his Gangoon Dubz crew has taken Brighton by storm with his raw and instinctive DJ style and tunes. We really can’t overemphasize how much energy this guy has on the decks, and it transfers straight to his tunes. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Think Slaughter Mob meets Cluekid and you’re part way there. Already getting big support from names like Sukh Knight and Afterdark.

‘No Comply’ is a brand new label from veteran dubstep producer Marlow, and he continues to carefully carve out his own sound with a classic blend of dense melodics, emotive vocals and pulsing basslines. ‘Druid’ is no exception: an intricate wall of music hits you immediately, crunching mid-range that doesn’t over do it, pulsing 4×4 drums, and plenty of colourful detail, all heightened by a sweet vocal akin to the soulful tones of Minnie Ripperton. ‘Cattle Prod’ on the flip, once again, utilises a powerful vocal sample to build the tension for a drop that squelches and squashes it’s way through the dancefloor. – ATM Review.

ISP002 Blip / Vansan (Gatekeeper remix) – Gatekeeper / Appleblim If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. A nice quick follow-up to a great first release on Wedge’s new label ISP,….this time by his good friend Gatekeeper. As the name suggests, ‘Blip’ on….the A centres around an incessant beep motif, slowly treated and effectedover time as the tune develops – sliding breaks, deep punchy bass, and then those gorgeous shimmering chords evolving throughout. On the B, Gatekeeper tackles Appleblim’s Skull Disco anthem ‘Vansan’ – expounding the original themes of texture created by delay and reverb and incorporating them into a 140bpm technical jungle piece. 9/10 [recommended] DJ Thinking IDJ Magazine.

HDB029 Sahara Michael / Fish – Ikonika HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Strange and beautiful music, in a full-colour sleeeve to match.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.
‘Medicate’ has received DJ support from LV (Hyperdub), Ben UFO (Hessle Audio), Pangaea (Hessle Audio, Hotflush), Blackdown (Keysound), Mick Pressure (Naked Lunch), Narcossist/Kowton (Keysound)
Blackdown (Keysound): “a lost gem – really harks back to an era of dubstep that is increasingly disappearing”
Ben UFO (Hessle Audio): “both sides of the release are great. Uncompromisingly eyes down vibes”

HDB028 Aidys Girl is a Computer – Darkstar HyperDub 12″ Vinyl
Some are saying, Tune of Year.. and finally on VInyl!!..Almost criminally luxurious post-UK garage sounds from Darkstar, who here check box one in the I-Spy book of faceless dance bods by not being able to lay their hands on a real-life girl to sing the hook, enlisting a talky computer program to do the business instead. But Aidys Girl Is A Computer is nothing if not sensuous; all swirling synthezisers, chiming percussion and skippy drums laced with whimpering techno-chatter that sounds not unlike an android deriving some salacious enjoyment from the warm jet of a Jacuzzi. EXIT017 Live For Never (LP Sampler) – Consequence Exit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Consequence was introduced to d-Bridge via mutual friends whilst touring New Zealand and after listening to some of his music, dbridge knew that he had found an artist with the potential to create an album suited to the labels ethos of writing music from the heart and not necessarily directed at the dancefloor. d-Bridge had just started his Autonomic podcast series alongside Instra:mental with the intention of showcasing and developing artists who were thinking outside of the conventional Drum & Bass box. Consequence has become a core member of this crew who have gone on to secure an Autonomic residency at the world famous Fabric night-club and turn many heads from outside the genre such as Laurent Garnier, Skream and Actress to name a few. The album contains collaborations with fellow Autonomic artists Instra:mental, ASC and d-Bridge and is a good representation of the versatility which Autonomic is becoming renowned for. Each track is a piece of music in its own right, but the whole album is best Listened to as one long piece that flows harmonically from start to finish through different emotions and atmospheres.

INMD005 Battlecat / Grapefruit – Donnie Dubson Influenza Media 12″ Vinyl
Germany has seen the evolution of many successful labels and artists over time, including (The) Panacea, Current Value, Twintone and Blu Saphir Recordings. But more recently, Digital Colours and Fokuz LTD artist, Donnie Dubson has stepped into the fray, joining the roster of immaculate talent on one of Belgium’s most well-known chill-out labels, Influenza Media. Coming a long way from his first release on Have-A-Break Recordings in 2006, Donnie’s masterful production has landed him spots on compilations and podcasts by the likes of Phunkfiction Recordings, Hospital Records and Knowledge Magazine, while collaborating with such artists as Stunna and Andy Sim. The fifth instalment on Influenza Media features two very different but “feel good” pieces. Battlecat is lush with its’ subtle, warm bass lines, while Grapefruit pummels forward with its’ bass-heavy kicks and sweeping pad melodies. If I were to speak to Donnie myself, I’d be the first to comment on his magnificent arrangement of the breakdown on both tunes. The halftime break in Grapefruit is very welcoming, and it really does a great job working its’ way towards the dance floor for the second drop. Battlecat uses a more traditional technique, using bass stabs to push the second drop into full throttle.

NASCA004 Spider – Body & Soul / Fourward Nasca Records 12″ Vinyl
BODY&SOUL, best known for their productions on Viper Recordings and Bad Company, need no further introduction. FOURWARD is one of the hottest and most sought after new producer collective around at the moment. Their first digital releases on Subsonik Sound were all regulars at Beatport Top 10 sales chart for weeks, competing with established artists´ tracks by Chase&Status and Noisia. BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD decided to join forces just recently and the feedback on their work so far couldn’t prove any more, that this was an excellent decision. Ed Rush & Optical have already picked up two of their tunes for their mighty Virus Recordings Imprint. In the meantime we have the first Vinyl release of BODY&SOUL and FOURWARD´s mastercraft on Nasca Records.
A: SPIDER – This tune starts off with gentle and warm electro influenced chords and a spooky speech sample layered on top of it, contrasted with mean and nasty reece bassline edits in the breakdown, followed be a smashing amen drop that is specifically designed to do serious damage to any dancefloor worldwide.
A: PURE – Pure shows the more musical side of things, combining deep string moods with cheeky neurofunk bassline edits in a way you might not have heard before. With this tune the boys demonstrate that their craft has come a long way, production quality is second to none.

SICK007 Breath Of Steel / First Cosmic – Lucio De Rimanez / Gancher Future Sickness Records 12″ Vinyl
Prepare yourself for two brand new, dark and relentless tracks on the seventh release of Belgium based label Future Sickness. Breath of Steel by Lucio Di Rimanez is a techno influenced, stomping track with snares ready to slay an army of mechanical zombies and a haunting synth melody that sounds like it was recorded in the middle of the factory in which they were build. The first deceiving tones of Gancher’s First Cosmic give you only moments to heal. Your hiding place isn’t safe for long though and before you know what’s going on, an onslaught of screaming stabs, distorted kicks and some very aggressive breakbeats drop hard and keep going until there is nothing left. This is not a record for the faint hearted but it is highly recommended for those who never leave the house without a sawn-off shotgun and a few hand grenades… just in case.

IBR003 Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP (Part Two) – Relocate Iberian 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The new release from Lisbon/Barcelona based Iberian Records sees the second part of Relocate’s “Hard Boogie For Dub Swingers EP” hit wax. First up are Lisbon’s Kuduro warriors Buraka Som Sistema with a remix of Relocate’s “Dot Dot Dash”. Clever micro samples from the original rub are married to an absolutely slamming b-line to create a full on floor-filler full of original flava which very successfully merges UK bass to the Portuguese sound. On the flip we have “Origins” from Relocate; which sees their unique stripped down sub-heavy bassline boogie to full effect. Relocate come up trumps once again with a full on roller of a track with trademark gliding bass dives and punchy stabs from a classic sidestepper Zed Bias sample and a very much house meets dubstep type of vibe. Both tunes are guaranteed to set the dance alight with their characteristic Iberian bass and groove flow. Support has come from the likes of Bunzero, Subsound, Markle, Blackdown, TRG, Ben UFO and Zed Bias.

ISP001 Running Away / Running Away (Guido Remix) – Wedge & Shadz If Symptoms Persist 12″ Vinyl
Bristol based DJ & producer Wedge comes with a fresh take on the dubstep sound with the debut release on his new label If Symptoms Persist… Having hosted his successful radio show on Sub M for four years, this first release represents the fruitful hookup that have come from the how. With the best of musical and vocal talent passing through, the show has become a watchword for keeping up on the developments in the Bristol sound. Shadz is one of the many talented vocalists to have guested on the show, and before long Wedge invited him into the studio to collaborate. The result is a perfect combination of bass weight beats and soulful songwriting. Shadz uses his experience singing with many different projects (Joker – Keep your eye on the ball, Gemmy ‘The Croft” Seezy -Whatever the weather, TC – Untitled, Distorted Minds – Otherside) to great effect and comes up with an infectious lyric with a yearning, searching theme that suits Wedges deep bass pressure perfectly. ‘Running Away’ join the long line of great vocal tun to come out of Bristol, from Smith & Mighty, Tricky, & Portishead to Reprazent & Ben Westbeech. Running Away – Guido Remix On the flip, rising talent Guido (one of the Purple Three along with Joker and Gemmy) turns in a remix that sums up the excitement surrounding these producers. R&B, grime, & dubstep are thrown into the mix. a rinsing b line mixes with Guido’s trademark or he orchestration & musicality. Two prime examples of why people are looking to Bristol for fresh take of the Dubstep / GrimeGoodnessKnowsWhat sound With DJ’s as diverse as Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1), Mr Jm (1Xtra), The Foreign Beggars (Dented Record ), Footloose (1Xtra), Starkey (Planet Mu), and N-Type (Rinse FM) supporting this release, things are looking great for this new label.

TOTTER022 Face Gets Splat EP – Stagga Rag and Bone 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. We don’t really do remixes, but with the original ‘Sick As Sin’ smacking it, this rework smacks it even more. On the flip-side you have 2 utterly brand new bangers that each provide prime time ammunition in their own right. Face gets Splat embodies trademark Stagga production with the lyrical talents of Y Dot Tzer J Bone getting into a metaphorical battle with other MCs. ATM001 Mako EP – Ital Tek Atom River 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Ital Tek (Alan Myson) is back with his second release of 2009: Mako EP, proving again that he is carving his own sound within the spectrum of bass music. His busy international touring schedule and releases on the infamous Planet Mu label have cemented his reputation as one of the most inventive producers working under the Dubstep banner today. Following on from 2008’s acclaimed album Cyclical and 2009’s Massive Error this is the debut release for his own imprint Atom River. Over 4 tracks it sees Ital Tek once again perfectly bridging the gap between Dubstep, Techno and Electronica whilst retaining strong dance floor energy. Mako opens the record with one of Ital Tek’s warmest and thickest sounding tunes to date. Driving fuzz bass and a searing twisted lead push the track onwards over a bed of glorious chord progressions. Chemical Temple stomps in with a lurching half step rhythm and thick cutting synth lines before breaking down in a pulsating double time bass driven mesh of tight flickering percussion and distant ghostly melodies breaking through into the foreground. Manhattan sets things off with a bang on the B side. Sharp cold metallic breaks drop into a heavy driving bass throb. The drums cut through the track with shattering precision allowing the bass to whip out the solid rhythm, whilst again complimenting Ital Tek’s knack for melody. Topaz closes the record with a hard hitting Techno – Dubstep crossover. Pounding kicks and crisp percussion swell over the course of 5 minutes into a crescendo of swirling synths before dropping finally into an epic rinse out. This record once again shows Ital Tek’s ability to bring both heaviness and beauty to music that is as equally suited in a club as it is sound tracking a late night drive.

HENCH011 Ill – Chasing Shadows Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. This is the second 12” from recent HENCH signing, Chasing Shadows. The duo drop some serious pressure with these dark and dirty tunes straight from the heart of cutting-edge dubstep production. They’ve already received attention from the likes of: Mary Anne Hobbs, Pendulum, Plastician, N-Type, and Benga, so give them a listen and see what all the hype’s about!
A.ILL – ‘Ill’ builds from an eerie intro, with sultry guitar chords and stabbing beat, slowly winding up to an immense drop. With twisted beats, a punishing b-line, and sweeping atmospherics, this is iller than ‘Ill’ – the bass is so low it will probably make you sick! Grimy and growling, this is a tune that’s going to tear your immune system to shreds.
AA. AMIRAH – Flip over for another dark, deep, no-nonsense number with ‘Amirah’; with ominous atmospherics, a stabbing drumbeat, and oriental female vox, ‘Amirah’ has plenty of spice and a feisty kick! A helicopter chopper sound fades in and out of consciousness and adds to the mayhem. Powerful and intense, with pummelling subs, heavy bassline and a thumping drum kick, ‘Amirah’ is a tune that takes no prisoners!

New Ska-Lounge-Ragga Promo Releases

BFT002 One Step Two – Lord Cry Cry Blunt Force Trauma 7″ Vinyl
Honking trumpets? Breasty ragga vocals and slick double-bass twangin’? A Prince Buster tune, cussing and some snooker balls? Well my good man, this can only be the next release from Blunt Force Trauma! This double dose of ska-lounge-cum-ragga-get-down is a most handsome successor to BFT’s first release. Lord Cry Cry aka Berlin- based Chris Donaghue pours every inch of his classically-trained ear for detail into this lovingly produced re-working of One Step Beyond, twinned with the rude Raw F*ck. Sweet-talking your backslide into a strange grooving action, this pair of beauties has slapped a large and toothsome grin in the face of every listener, including the likes of DJ Food, Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) and Jon Kennedy. Artwork here is obsessively overseen by BFT with a cover shot by New York’s Anthony Saint James (www.anthonysaintjames.com – worth a visit for the celeb-spotting!) and a tattoo by British illustrator Inkymole, on a sleeve which opens into an 11″x16″ poster. Add blue dinked vinyl with a red 45rpm adapter by sister company Factoryroad, a download card with 7 tracks including ‘Make my P-Funk The Funk’ (a track exclusive to this format) along with Mac/PC and iPhone wallpapers and, well, you DO have a fulsome package there, sir. We’ve got unfolded versions of that sleeve here too; just ask if you want some buttocks to brighten up your boudoir.
About Lord Cry Cry: After working in a steel mill and disregarding encouragement to become a Woolworths manager Lord Cry Cry, born Chris Donaghue, studied Law at Oxford University then Clinical Psychology. He worked as a psychologist in Kent then moved to Berlin to write a novel, join a band, build a snowman, schlep coal, and collect bottles. Just because he could. He completed a Masters degree in sound design and classical music composition in Berlin this year. This is his first solo vinyl release, after providing many a musical piece for various short European films.

New UK Funky Releases

BOKBOK01 I Want You (Bok Bok VIP Dub) – Dre Skull Unknown 12″ Vinyl
White Label, Black sleeve. One of the most exciting record on these pages this week comes from London’s Bok Bok, offering up two refixes of Crazy Cousins ‘Bongo Jam’ and Dre Skull’s ‘I Want You’. The cliche “One to watch” was made for this fella, from his potent mixtapes mashing grime, house, garage and UK Bass, to his forthcoming tracks for Dress 2 $weat, Bok Bok is dangerously onto something. On the A-side we’ve got a refit of Dre Skull’s club anthem ‘I Want You’, engaging with elements of tougher NYC and Chicago house and locked into heavyweight UKF bass with a proper bashment fired flavour. On the flipside he rewires Crazy Cousins’ infectious ‘Bongo Jam’ with a superbly tempered blend of dirty chromed synth timbres and cool rushing snare rolls executed with a knowing restraint, built to tease the dancefloor. Both tracks are tried and tested dancefloor destroyers – clubs everywhere will be eternally grateful. Sick. (Words courtesy of Boomkat).

HZN036EP The Prologue – Data Horizons Music 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy Promo’s. Horizons Music proudly presents The Prologue EP, a glimpse at a dystopian future, created by Data (N.Burne). Ambience, vibe, groove and experimentation are brought to the fore, whilst each track has it’s own distinct tone and direction. Heavily inspired by works such as William Gibson’s ‘Neuromancer’ and ‘Burning Chrome’, the music contained within aims to create images in the mind. Data’s also created some quotes to help set the scene. Come and take a walk through the Sprawl…
Vice Welcome to the Sprawl’s Red Light District, where anything can be bought… Lush chords and vocal stabs introduce Vice, whilst a broken and staggered beat provides the rhythm. An sleazy vibe is brought forth from the arrangement, which builds to it’s dramatic drop, with a huge bassline, that folds around the beat perfectly. The 2nd half of the track takes on a more musical approach, with lush synth tones providing a stunning melody to finish the track.
The Sprawl The dome towered over them, protecting them from the harmful rays that the Ozone layer could no longer shelter them from. Their sun was not one of gold, but of grey… Sinister ambience creeps towards you from the speaker as a heavy stepping beat provides the pace through The Spawl. Distant cries and the buzz of machinery mingle amongst each other, whilst drones buzz overhead. Dramatic effects break the beat apart before the breakdown, where a menacing bass enters the fray. Percussion hits, fragments of breaks and strange fx keep things moving throughout the track, with a distinct change in the second section keeping the listener interested till the end.
The Enemy Within Pain streaked through his body as the virus began to eat away at his cybernetics. Time was running out. Twisted and abstract, The Enemy Within is driven by it’s disgusting synth line and strange glitch beat. Technical yet restrained, it’s hypnotic patterns draw you into it’s midst, whilst bell like tones provide an ominous atmosphere. Hissing bitcrushed ride cymbals pick up the pace, whilst a distorted midtone provides the response to bass.
Antenna They fear the visionary experience, for you have to go through a kind of death to experience it… Featuring Cell and clocking in at 140 bpm, Antenna is mostly ambient in it’s approach until the later sections, where a huge thumping and distorted drum line is matched with a massive 808 bass section. Space like pads and synths and matched by strange whirring sounds, whilst distorted tones glitch in and out of it’s audio landscape. Fragments of radio messages can be heard, metaphysical messages that echo out of the speaker into your mind. A totally unique and abstract approach.

a Data – The Sprawl
b Data – Vice
c Data – The Enemy Within
d Data & Cell – Antenna

EXIT017 Live For Never (LP Sampler) – Consequence Exit Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo.

DRUNKCD001 Good Energy (A Singles Collection) – RSD Punch Drunk Records CD
RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms for more than two decades. He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene, with a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, jungle, 2-step and dubstep, From his musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has always had a strong dub aesthetic. Forming the, now legendary, production duo Smith and Mighty with collaborator Ray Mighty in 1987, the pair’s early releases on the Three Stripe label were influential in laying the groundwork for both the trip hop and jungle scenes for which Bristol would become renowned. A period of chart success and major label involvement in the early nineties was followed by a return to their underground roots for Smith and Mighty. During this time Rob also worked with Peter D. Rose to release groundbreaking music on their More Rockers imprint. Rob Smith also went on to collaborate with local roots reggae producers Henry & Louis. This fruitful relationship culminated in 2001 with the release of the fantastic ‘Time Will Tell’ LP. More recently, Rob Smith has found a new home as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, sub- heavy rhythms of dubstep. With releases on internationally respected labels such as Punch Drunk, Tectonic and Earwax, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystemtesting sub-lines and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007′s infectious junglist roller “Pretty Bright Lights” and 2008′s speaker destroying dread-fuelled steppers “Over It” & “Jah Way” has rapidly cemented them as anthems. This Punch Drunk CD collection compiles tracks from many of the 12”s released in the past two years under the RSD moniker.

New Dubstep Releases

IME013 Elephants – October Immerse Records 12″ Vinyl
Absolute madness from Immerse here, as October is released from his minimal techno day-centre to wreak havoc amongst the dubsteppers.‘Elephants’ is a pretty appropriate name for the A, as bongo loops and ominuous machine noises are summarily flattened by the phasing bass crunch and trumpeting midrange. Add a dash of running breakbeat to the mix and you have a strange yet effective dancefloor worrier. Flipside, ‘Medium’ opts for broken techno stylings, simmering pads and clattering percussion setting the scene for the tense main event. 8/10 [recommended] Review By Diccon c/o IDJMagazine.

DP030 King Pin – The Others Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police churn out yet another stonking release from label veterans The Others. Kicking off the single is the almighty ‘Kingpin’, which has been battered by the likes of Caspa, Skream, N-Type and The Scratch Perverts. With an intro full of suspense and a drop that packs one serious punch, this is a track guaranteed to bring any dance floor to submission, absolutely heavyweight! Things couldn’t be more different on the flip as The Others show their soulful side with the beautiful ‘Splinter In My Soul’, which has been kept ultra exclusive until full release! Soft melodies and warm bass with a ‘Soul:R’ esq vibes, not your usual from these boys but a stunning piece of music none the less. In a nutshell this release has it all, quality stuff from the DP camp once again.

DP031 The Future – Trolley Snatcha Dub Police Records 12″ Vinyl
Dub Police yet again show their aim of bringing through new talent with the first single of newbie Trolley Snatcha. And don’t be fooled by the name, this kid doesn’t hang around Asda nicking trolley’s all day, instead he produces some seriously big tunes! Kicking things off is the brutal sounds of ‘The Future’, with the dubplate battering stamp of approval from the likes of Caspa, The Others, N-Type and co. A quite unsuspecting intro before one serious kick in the knackers of bassline pressure, this one is straight up murderation on any dance floor! The flip sees the slightly more upbeat ‘Scattah’, which once again is not for the faint hearted and found its way in to the sets of Skream and the usual big hitters of dubstep royalty. Gritty, dark and relentless bass with pounding beats are the order of the day, making this a tough debut 12” from this young bass jedi.

HF023 Sketch On Glass – Mount Kimbie Hotflush Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Mount Kimbie have carved out another superb foursome for Hotflush, and once again the music is just as comfortable in the hiphop or electronica realm as it is dubstep. Folksy melodies and ducking piped synths swoop over garage cheek and serrated bass in opener ‘Sketch On Glass’, before ‘Serged’ takes us deeper and darker with its anti-quantised beats, spring reverb drips and surgically-altered vocals. Flipside, an epic sonic vista in ’50 Mile View’ makes way for delicate instrumental RnB before the introverted 2-step bleep of ‘At Least’. (Words C/O diccon IDJ Mag Issue 116)

KRKN010 Work Dat Box – Jaybird Kraken Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Promo’s. Kraken are rolling again, with their second release in as many weeks (Check out KRKN009), and it’s good to have the Denmark based don’s back! Very little is known about A-side artist and LA resident Jaybird, but i’m sure plenty of people will be on the hunt for info after this little number drops. Absolutely relentless, crushing dubstep music, a refreshingly nasty little number reminiscent in atmosphere to one of Kraken’s earliest releases ‘Eye Of The Demon’ by Wolfman (JSL), this tune is currently tearing up clubs worldwide, with support from 2000F and notably featuring on Hatcha & Crazy D’s Kiss FM radio show, you’re gunna love this one! Legendary Kraken artist JSL pops up on the flip with a brand new beat, kept relatively under wraps this one comes out of nowhere and smacks is straight round the chops like Kimbo Slice! Act quickly on this one, it won’t last.

ACRE014 Boom N Pow – Akira Kiteshi Black Acre Records 12″ Vinyl
First 500 on LTD transparent red vinyl.
Edinburgh’s prodigal son returns to the boards for another alchemic fusion of glitchy boom bap and tear out noise terror. Boom N Pow, explodes out of the starting blocks with Akira’s super fresh sound aesthetic. Solid battle hardened hip hop drums sway and tumble under the pressure of aquatic bass and citric stabs. Just as the b-boys heads are bopping the beats shrink, normal gravity is restored and the barely audible rants of Akira’s imaginary Japanese self begins the wind up to point where Akira Kiteshi justifies his new title as master of the 2nd drop. Boom N Pow (Raffertie Remix) in an attempt to win most cutting edge banger of 09 we have employed the services of Planet Mu’s hot boy Raffertie on the re-up. Here the Brum hardcore enthusiast bring bitch slap snares, degraded synths and his own unique brand drunken noise chaos. Keeping up the neck snapping pace Raff flips the script on the 2nd drop into the kind of chaos best described as Aphex Twin on a Ragga Tip. It’s big and it IS clever…. Support: Mix Master Mike, Bobby Friction, Rob Da Bank, N Type, Reso, Raffertie, Joker, Starkey, MF GLK.

COUNT026 How You Like Me Now? (Joker Remix) – The Heavy Counter 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The Heavy return with next single from their forthcoming album, “The House That Dirt Built,” a widescreen funk epic, moving from JBs shuffle to crashing break, Animals guitar and horn fanfares, a huge build which is set to bring the house down wherever it’s played. As if the original wasn’t enough, The Heavy have compiled a superb package of remixes. Fellow West Countryman Joker, gives the original a huge dollop of Purple and comes up with something sounding like Timberlake smoking skunk in St Pauls. Sometime Mowgli-collaborator Solo goes more down a 4/4 route, building up the congas etc into a perfect example of what he calls “midget house”. Finally, Ghost takes the tempo down and emphasises the mournful backing vocals for a suitably majestic finale. As if this wasn’t enough, The Heavy have also thrown in a bonus track, “Tell It Like It Is,” a country-fried hoe-down which emphasizes just how good Swaby’s voice is. Produced by Jim Abbiss (best known for his work with the Arctic Monkeys, Adele and Kasabian), “The House That Dirt Built” is a breakthrough record from one of the most exciting bands in the UK just now. With a growing rep in the States, festival dates lined up for the summer and a huge tour to support the album this autumn, the Heavy have just built their house on your front lawn. Get used to the view.

FDLP3 Guilty Feet, No Rhythm – Rigas den Andre Flogsta Danshall 12″ Vinyl
What’s wrong with Rigas den Andre? He’s young, gifted and comes from a well-respected noble family and still his music speaks the ancient mournful language of the rocky Swedish archipelago. Because of this, RDA could be easily dubbed as the meister of melancholic electronic party music. Or “blue funk” as the exact term should be in my opinion. Take my word and dive in to the sea of emotions provided by RDA’s new album “Guilty Feet, No Rhythm”. I promise You confusion. Take a journey through the depressing digital funk of “No Heaven” or reach for the joyous synthesizer excursions of “W.A.S.P.” or “Go, Rangers, Go!”.And don’t forget to boogaloo to the epic title track which sounds like Timbaland and Björn Ulvaeus had a son. Because, in the end RDA’s music is like life itself: Gloomy, mournful, slow, but oh so funky!
