Established in early 2009 by dBridge and Instra:mental, the Autonomic Podcast series hastily captured an audience of over 50,000 listeners each month. Whilst showcasing a wealth of new and exiting music without a channel for release, they decided that the Autonomic brand should move onto bigger things and create a label and regular club night.

Having secured a quarterly night at Fabric in London, and also mixing the Fabric Live 50–dBridge & Instra:mental presents Autonomic CD, the record label was the next logical step in order to create a home for the style of music that they believe has many more avenues to explore. First up for release are two collaborative tracks:

a) dBridge / Instra:mental / Skream – Acacia Avenue

Gaining momentum week in week out on the club circuit, what at first seemed to be quite a barren track has grown into a little monster. The intro draws you in with an unexpected switch into emotive b-line stabs, but it’s the subtle drop of the heavyweight 808 sub layered with the Pro 1 and Moog arps riff that send the dance floors silly. No crash bang wallop of drums here, just a simple riff timed and executed for maximum effect.

aa) dBridge & Instra:mental – Detroid

Traveling down a moodier path than the flipside, Detroid is an Interesting fusion of influences that create something very distinctive. Taut atmospheres and whispering sound effects fabricate a background for the loosely hanging percussion groove and murmuring bass undertone. This track is riddled with trademark production styles from both dBridge and Instra:mental, put them together in the same pot and they mix smoothly into a remarkable piece of music.

NOMIC001 is due to be released in April/May 2010 on Vinyl / Digital.

Voodoo music is the new label from Offkey. In the last year Raiden has increasingly begun to explore his love for tribal & percussive based drum n bass and after a recent trip to Latin America the concept for Voodoo Music was born.

In preparation for Voodoo music this year Raiden & Khanage have been busy been creating music that has gathered ‘every set’ support and rewinds from Alix Perez, Loxy, Doc Scott, dBridge, C4C, Rockwell, Icicle, Ink & Bailey amongst others. The tracks have become anthems for the new emerging sound and its followers. Thinking with a mind toward the future we have been keeping our eyes and ears on a few emerging artists that we can develop on a long term basis- Morphy and Khanage to name a few.

Voodoo Music will also feature contributions and collaborations with Rockwell, Loxy, June Miller amongst others, each release will come with its own identity and we will be working closely with the artists to make sure their work is represented in the truest sense.
We are able to work with like minded artists within drum n bass as our work has been received very well by peers and in turn these artists are writing music specifically to fit the sound and concept of Voodoo Music.

The debut release for the label is the long in demand tracks from Raiden entitled ‘Baptism Of Fire’ b/w ‘Danzon’. Baptism Of Fire is a brooding track that thrives on holding a sense of cold tension whilst ‘Danzon’ is a latin inspired skank out that doesn’t go down the trad-latin formula but instead concentrates highly on the complex rhythms of Cuba.

The second 12″ will be another instalment from Raiden & Khanage’s ongoing collaboration with ‘Amnesia Haze’ & ‘8798′, two tracks that ignited the initial spark for the Voodoo Music project during a very late in the studio between the pair.

New D ‘n’ B Releases

EXIT018 Inner Disbelief – dBridge Exit Records 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. This track screams out classic dBridge in every sense with its clever use of musical stabs, eerie atmospheres and growling sub bass.

They are influenced by the early tech step era of Drum and Bass and inspired by various other styles such as House, Dub, Hip Hop or Minimal Techno. The first Mindscape release came out on DJ Trace’s London-based label, DSCI4. Since then Mindscape have had several tracks released on Subtitles, Hospital, Inneractive, Red Light, Citrus, Celsius, Syndrome and Fokuz Recordings. Reefer has had Dj support from Phil Source, Ed Rush, Cause 4 Concern, Break, Trace, Optiv and Squire among others. Soul Intent – Future Funk – Phil Source and Outrage Remix Alex Judd aka Soul Intent has a big reputation building around him. He works out of Nottingham in the U.K. He has already had releases out on Creative Source, Blindside, Samurai, MacII, 31 Records and Horizons. This guy is part of the new breed of Drum and Bass. “Future Funk” featured on VAMPDJUK007 and was a big track on the circuit played by Fabio and Grooverider (Radio 1). Grooverider has tipped Soul Intent to be one to watch for the future! Watch out for more Soul Intent music on Vampire. Phil Source and Outrage who have remixed the track are big producers that have featured on labels such as Metalheadz, Good Looking, Mo Wax, Virgin, Backlash and J-Tek.

EXIT020 Peach Fuzz – System Exit Records 12″ Vinyl

Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement. On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc. On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

HEDGE023 Eastern Underground (Bungle RMX) / (Influx UK Edit Mix) – Dub Tao Hard Edged 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Berlin’s premiere Drum and Bass label returns with an original and a remix of label stalwarts Dub Tao. This duo has helped to keep Hard:edged at the forefront of the German Drum and Bass scene. Their latest offering comes in the form of, ‘East Of The Underground’. Backed with a remix from Brazilian bad boy, Bungle; who takes matter into his own hands with a stellar remix, creating a delicious double A-sided package. First up is Mr. Bungle, who rides the sample over shattering breaks, while breathing life into the tune via a tight rhythmically undulating bass line. Clever synth work is also put to use on this nearly essential tool. This is a track that possesses as much musicality as it does excitement. Dub Tao start the original off with a classic two step break, letting the samples and atmospheres create a tension before a thunderous bass drop. Dub Tao, certainly don’t need any help getting their sound tight, but who would turn down a little mixing magic from Formation’s soul-man Influx Uk. He deftly applies his ability to work within the realms of melodic Drum and Bass, while still adding some grit and edge. A skill the DT boys are quickly learning themselves. This EP most certainly posses a plethora of versatility which will aid it in finding a place in the DJ sets of many and blaring out of the speakers on a dance floor near you.

SENSELESS011 You Know – Ghosttown ft Badness & Dajla Senseless Records 12″ Vinyl

Wonky dancefloor dancehall from Ghosttown featuring Badness, mix from DZ, Like his spectral namesake Simon Booth aka Ghosttown has spent the last few years obscured, half out of sight as a producer hiring out his futuristic beat-science to a string of heavy hitting MCs including Foreign Beggars here in the UK and a clutch of artists across the Atlantic including Guilty Simpson, Oh No, Frank and Dank and Dudley Perkins from the Dilla/Stones Throw axis of the hip hop spectrum.
His debut release started life like most of his productions, on a beat tape with another 80 or so one minute tracks, all vital snapshots charged with the excitement of what might happen with the right MC but there was something special about the original ‘Greezy’. It wires up squelching formant synths to insistent, minimal drums sounding like a 2010 UK-bass update to Ginuwine’s ‘Pony’ but at 145 BPM with speaker damaging sub.
This devastating but unusual collision of sounds needed a versatile MC and Badness was top of the list. Known for his early work with Lava Unit and Terror Danjah as well as last year’s carnival smash ‘Message is Love’ with Jammer and Silverlink Birmingham born Badness’ star is on the rise. ‘You Know’ as the track became features his signature double time bashment/grime flow and a killer hook sung by cosmic-soul powerhouse Dajla. The Parisian born singer is a Radio Nova favourite who has collaborated with Wax Tailor, Foreign Beggars and celebrated hip hop poet Anthony Joseph. The resulting track is unmistakably UK but with a bashment flavour, wonky dancehall? The vinyl remix comes from DZ (Hot Flush/Tru Tiger) who delivers a mix that turbo charges the dancefloor elements of the track to come up with multi coloured low end work out. Senseless will release a Ghosttown album in summer 2010 featuring vocalists including Frank & Dank, Olivier Daysoul, Badness, YT, Navigator, Killa P and more. 2010 is the year the Ghost comes to life.

Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Fast becoming one of the most exciting and diverse labels in Drum & Bass ‘Exit Records’ have a massive lineup of quality releases in the pipeline. Forthcoming on the label imminently are EXIT019 and EXIT020. Full details are right here.

The first release for 2010 on Exit records comes in the form of two tracks by Russian newcomers Abstract Elements, made up of two producers Bop and Diagram. Their tracks caught the attention of label owner dBridge with their seemingly fearless quest for experimentation and have featured heavily in the sets of DJs such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Loxy, ASC and also on the Autonomic podcasts. Both tracks sit just as comfortably at clubs such as FWD as they do in an all out DnB party.

A) Abstract Elements – Wrong Way

“Wrong Way” takes us into a void of sound and space, built around a metronomic radar blip, the track sinks down deep through the uncharted depths of the subsonic bass realms. Attention to detail, intricate use of atmospheric sound effects and devastating low end bass give this track a unique sensation which just cannot be ignored. Repeated listening is required to fully explore the vast soundscape that they have created here.

B) Abstract Elements – Abysmal Depth

“Abysmal Depth” could be described as a distorted fusion of dub and electronica but also delves into the 4×4 genre. Once again, their use of constantly transforming effects and mood altering atmospherics give this track the quality of being able to take the listener on a journey and leaves them with an awkward sense of not knowing exactly where they’ve just been. Check out the Farbric Live 50 -dBridge & Instra:mental present Autonomic CD to see just how versatile this track be work in the mix.

Mark System is by no means a newcomer to the music world having been performing as an MC and producing music for labels such as Digital Soundboy and Shogun Audio amongst others for over a decade. His debut on Exit Records consists of two tracks which underline his production skills and originality in sound design and arrangement.

A) System – Peach Fuzz

On the A-Side we have “Peach Fuzz”. A track created and named by System after attending and gaining inspiration from Carl Cox’s closing party at Space. He claims that Danny Tenaglia’s set stimulated him to think about new ways of approaching tracks. “Peach Fuzz“ was the result and what a result it was. This track oozes originality and is a pearl in the boxes of many top DJs at the moment such as dBridge, Instra:mental, Ed Rush, Commix, Friction etc etc.

B) System – The Voices

On the B-side we have “Voices” from System, which is an elaborate workout of glitchy beats, choppy break edits and curious melodies. This track is far from formulaic, having been started as an experiment to vent creative juices with no intention of it leaving his computer, were glad it did!

“Speaking to The End in mid-2008, Exit boss and Autonomic mastermind Darren White, AKA dBridge, had these words to say about his beloved genre: “…when I listen to tunes from the last two or three years and compare them to tunes from the era that I believe it was at its most interesting, they don’t even compare. This isn’t music that people outside of our scene can look to, and that’s a big beef of mine.” Jump ahead to early 2010 and—thanks to the increasingly wide-ranging output of Instra:mental, SpectraSoul, Data and co—things don’t look quite so bleak. In fact, we might forgive Mr White for having been a little overly pessimistic: it’s his label that gave birth to 2009’s best drum & bass full-length, an album which, in drawing together influences as diverse as Ed Rush, OMD and Autechre (and wilfully refusing to tick any obvious dance floor boxes at that), positively commands attention.

In fact, there’s only one real blooper on the album: the schmaltzy “Life Is Timing,” which, sadly, delves a little too far into the champagne sipping terrain evoked by its title, and fails to integrate with what, taken in whole, is a remarkably coherent piece of work. What marks it out—and to a degree which, in the recent history of drum & bass, only dBridge’s The Gemini Principle equals—is its refusal to make concessions in the name of sales, airplay, MC compatibility and such like. There are no “big tunes,” no crushing breaks, no epic drops and, most pleasingly in a genre blighted by trite samples, no vocals. It’s simply one man’s vision of dark, futuristic bass music, and a powerful articulation—indeed, the most powerful one yet—of the Autonomic sound. Music that those outside the scene can, and really should, look to “.

Ending the brief hiatus that followed the ‘Great Lengths’ LP and accompanying world tour Martyn and 3024 usher in the new decade with a brace of remixes from the deepest recesses of the quasi- house community.

First out the gates is 3024-006, helmed by a pair of artists as unique as they are elusive; Zomby and Redshape.

Easily one of the most talked about new producers of the last few years Zomby continues to evolve upwards and out, never settling on a particular style and constantly twisting the technicolour DNA of his output. Those smeared neon fingerprints are all over his reworking of Hear Me’ which lights up clattering percussion and a black hole of a bass drop with layers of sparkling neon crystal SID chip melodies.

Tackling ‘Seventy Four’ on the flip side is determinedly enigmatic Techno classicist Redshape. Responsible for a string of unashamedly human releases since 2006, his rich organic sound has recently caught the imagination of a 4×4 scene beginning to look beyond icy [and boring] minimalism for inspiration. A highlight of the forthcoming Fabric 50: Martyn mix CD, the original’s glowering pulse is carefully built on with walls of murky analogue warmth and hissing industrial ambience before reaching a monolithic climax.

Almost a year on from the release of his debut album “One” and with ‘Saviour of Techno’ plaudits still bouncing off concrete walls, Berghain lynchpin Ben Klock turns in a remix of Is This Insanity that distils everything inspirational about both the club and city he calls home. Spaceape’s cracked vocal is welded to a sort of cavernous piston driven groove while traces of the original’s melody fractured into the briefest of shards fight their way to the surface only to sink back into the percussive smog.

Located well outside of the heavily scrutinised UK hype centres, Manchester’s rising star Illum Sphere continues to hone his already distinct sound on the flipside’s Brilliant Orange reworking. A clanking off kilter groove rubs up against an extended mutation of the original melody that pushes the track towards a poignant climax, evoking all the ache of reaching for the stars and landing squarely on one’s face.

Taking us into extra time is an exclusive to the digital release, Roska’s ‘Speechless’ version of the dBridge voiced ‘These Words’. A prolific producer and in demand remixer, Roska debuts a new side of his sound that prioritizes space and atmospherics over the dance floor. Stripping the track down to a skittering insect house and minimal percussion focuses full attention on dBridge’s mournful vocal, until muted bass and woodblocks creep into the arrangement and bring proceedings to an uneasy close.

Exit Records bring their busy 2009 release schedule to a close with this outstanding 12” from label owner dBridge, featuring two tracks that have been consistently played over the last few months by djs such as Goldie, Friction, Alix Perez, SpectraSoul, Fabio, Doc Scott and Marcus Intalex amongst others. A 12” getting massive DJ support from across the scene. ‘Inner Disbelief’ is reminiscent of some of dBridge’s Gemini Principle LP tracks with a more dance floor friendly edge, but as usual without compromising quality control. It’s yet another example of dBridge using his vocal talent to compliment his productions and create his signature flavour of “aggressively beautiful” music. A re-arranged piano hook sample layered upon a moody bass line and driving beat provide the backing for this very catchy and listenable song. On the flip we have another track from dBridge entitled ‘5th Floor’. What appears at first to be quite a sparse track slowly builds into an all out roller with its musical elements becoming more and more frequent and drums gradually layering up to create pace and energy. DARKESTRALEX001 One Man Jettison/Boundary Part 1 (Afterthought) // Decorum – Sabre Darkestral Excursions 12″ Vinyl
LIMITED EDITION 500 copies on Black & White streaked vinyl, untreated black reverse board with overprinted logo. Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.
Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spacial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions ‘One Man Jettison’ in title and sound design called for the creation of the latest Darkestral project, a particular home at the front of the mothership, a capsule prepared to journey to the outer reaches, solitary and mournful, encapsulated by the strings and feeling that an intrepid journey into the unknown was upon us all, that moves into a feeling of readiness to see the mission through. ‘Boundary pt.1 (afterthought)’ follows as an epilogue and a prologue to a fantastical new horizon, textured and psychedelic, beatless and airy… ‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.

After a brief hiatus, we return with a delicate slice of wax that epitomises what LDR stands for – new, original music from hardworking, young artists. After the success of Data’s “Blowpipe” on LD5 and a string of genre-busting releases on labels like Metalheadz, Critical, Revolution and Tempa, Data brings us a grimy gem in the form of “Liberty City Blues”. Incident from Hungary and Paul SG from Austria blew us away with this track which featured on our recent Knowledge Magazine cover CD mix. “Liberty City Blues” is a minimalistic piece of jungle music reminiscent of early Photek or Source Direct. Triple Vision proudly welcomes L B Recordings to the drum’n bass roster. Limewax is the man behind this label. This young man has been releasing tunes under Dylan and Tech Itch’s wing since 06 and they both have been hammering his releases over and over. EX7002 has been getting plenty of attention from all comers, with dubstep, breaks and even drum & bass DJs all clamouring to get their hands on it. EAR012 Chicken Foot – Clue Kid Earwax 12″ Vinyl
It’s been a while now since Clue Kid released his debut single here on ‘Earwax – ‘Halogen’ and ‘Down & Dirty’ (2006). We are very pleased to have him back on wax, demonstrating his progressions as he’s has mastered his art. The lead track ‘Chicken Foot’ is a one for the clever stepper who likes his wobble to be little more deadly and refined in delivery. It’s a banger alright but one with plenty of restraint and fine style. Opening pads chime a deadly warning before the wonky bassline thumps in, heavily grooved and heavily weighted. Sporadic conga riffs cut through on point, adding to the momentum generated by the no-compromise bassline. Hold out for the 2nd drop as it twists a new way round! Flip then for the equally deadly but more stripped down ‘Shifty’. Perhaps not the most appropriate title ever conceived but a fine piece of heavy artillery nonetheless. Taking a 2005 Loefah sound (and supported by him for this very reason) and redefining it in a Clue Kid style. Excellent quality rhythm and bass music with a dark and unforgiving edge. The first in a series of Clandestine plates devoted to exposing the production talents of Brighton town. Presenting two producers destined to go a long way: Ultrasound and Hizzle Guy. Two very distinct takes on bass heavy 140bpm music, these tracks have been alternately blissing out and smashing up dancefloors around the world in recent months, so here they are for you to continue the trend. ULTRASOUND consist of two Brighton based DJ producers and a London based sound engineer. Between them these three have released a huge number of tracks across different genres over the years, DJ’d different styles of music in venues all over the shop, worked in record shops and are now behind the highly acclaimed “well rounded” label. For their first release as a production outfit Ultrasound have distilled Dubstep through a refined apparatus of trip-hop, soundsystem warmth, Berlin texture and sheer musical sensibility into something both unique and familiar. Dread is an absolute low slung monster of a tune in the rave, at once hype filled and drudgingly weighty, with a loping propulsion and gully vibe thats been sorely lacking from “dancefloor” dubstep of late. Hyperdub’s original female producer Ikonika comes with this long-awaited release that lives up to all expectations, presenting two brilliant tracks that set the scene for her debut album due early in 2010. ‘Sahara Michael’ seems cryptic at first, but on repeated listens falls into focus, revealing its complex soul, marrying bright (dis)chords which contrast with the warm undertow of harmonies that flow throughout. The track steps into a bridge passage with a melody that recalls the funky worm melodies of prime G-Funk, extending the theme of contrasting polar opposites that the tune plays with. B side ‘Fish’ chanels early Detroit techno at its most abstract and painterly. Smears of bright vibrating chords flash frantically across the mix, building into thick harmonic meshes backed by a hard drum pattern before they solidfy into a triumphant melody. Strange and beautiful music, in a full-colour sleeeve to match.

RAD001 Medicate – Logos Radial Productions 12″ Vinyl
Radial Productions is a new label operating out of London, UK, inspired by deep, hypnotic, space-oriented sounds from the world of dubstep and beyond. Radial 001 sees label co-owner Logos kick proceedings off with his track ‘Medicate’. Medicate was inspired by and built in remembrance of the legendary DMZ nights at 3rd Base and the lights out, eyes down vibe which seemed to transport the dedicated crowd three thousand leagues deep. Many of us still look to that time for inspiration and this track stands in tribute. The flip sees Hyperdub recording artists LV step up and spin the original on its axis. Faint murmurs of technical bass play counterpoint to the tolling bells, while the bongos and perfectly balanced drum programming roll the tune out in skippier, 2-step oriented direction.

In his latest album No Strings Attached, in addition to his latest solo work, Dom has teamed up with the current crop of big name producers to release a 12 track album, featuring collaborations with Amon Tobin of Ninja records, the trendy Dutch super producers Noisia, Violence label owner Hive, Audio, and last but by no means least Rob Playford, Dom’s old label boss, now close friend, also known as the co-producer and engineer of Goldie’s legendary timeless album. Doms latest album is one of his finest works to date.I n 2005 Dom started his own label Dom & Roland Productions releasing the creme de la creme of Drum and Bass collaborations, as well as being an outlet for his own work. An accomplished sound engineer, Dom is well known to have coproduced and mixed some of the classics of the drum and bass scene, including Subway with Ed Rush, Sonar with DJ Trace, appearing as guest producer alongside Optical on Grooveriders seminal Prototype Years album, as well as having enjoyed enormous success with many of his own tracks including the mighty Thunder, Imagination and Can’t Punish Me.

Dub Police drop an absolute peach of a single here from Birmingham’s ever rising star Emalkay. This side see’s the massive ‘When I Look At You’ get a release, and with support from Caspa, Benga, Skream, N-Type & just about anyone who is anyone battering the living daylights out of this tune its not hard to see why this has now got to the anthem status it so thoroughly deserves. A real epic intro with luscious pads and pitched vocals, before an absolutely ferocious drop of squelching bass and stomping beats. So big, its criminal! The flip couldn’t be any more different, but don’t let that put you off. ‘Angie Got Stoned’ is sheer genius with its quirky piano lead, skippy beats, sweet vocals and warm bass. In all honesty words cannot really give this track any justice, just listen to it yourself and enjoy this masterpiece that Emalkay has unleashed on to the world. The classic TRG release. repressed and Re-released. Fresh from releasing killer plates on Hessle Audio, Subway and Audio Freakz, Romania’s TRG touches down on Immerse to deliver this highly-accomplished 12”. First up is Time is Now, kicking off with samples of dystopian android speech mixed up with a simple flute lick that gives no warning of the impending carnage! Snipped up breaks collide with whiplash-inducing bass action and shuddering subs to make a guaranteed mess of any dancefloor. Flipside, TRG gets more reflective with They Know, as wistful chords drift across the intro like echoes of some long-forgotten rave, before dropping into a post-UKG boom-bass workout. Subs bulge beneath the broken 2-step riddim and occasional warping midline, building nicely towards the killer switchups on the second drop.

An associate of Terror Danjah from the late 90’s, DVA supplied dubs to Dj Slimzee during grimes early days and has produced for luminaries of the scene like Wiley, Trim, Chipmunk, Tinchy Stryder and more. Darkestral Excursions has been brought into existence to display a series of aural ventures into the farther reaches of the beat spectrum, an edge of universe collection of anti-gravity constructs for the adventurous inner-space traveller…

Selected as first pilot on this mission, the cinematic compositions of Sabre, already known for a sense of spatial definition but here freed of dancefloor constraint and able to run free with the more esoteric perspective often contained in his productions

Sabre has built a name for a certain depth in his productions, and here forces the creation of a new project for Darkestral (Excursions) which came into being on hearing this cinematic trio of pieces. Falling into musically evocative areas such as soundtrack composition, the more minimal region of dubstep and future drum & bass, Sabre here gives vent to his more thoughtful, isolationist side, where constraints have been thrown out in favour of musical freedom and the use of naturalistic instrumentation, beautiful cellos and strings perfectly encapsulate the feeling of being on a lone drift in outer space, with a certain chilled air wrapping all three pieces.

aa) ‘Decorum’:

‘Decorum’ – strings and a glowing halo at the end of worlds introduces a muted brass and lush, though exploratory off-step beat as the touchdown on a planets surface is described in a sense of wonderment.
