Moving towards the end of the year and it’s time for a temperature change as Critical gets ice cold with the talents of D&B scene newcomer, Foreign Concept. Although a relatively fresh face Foreign Concept has already made quite a name for himself have signed tunes to the likes of Samurai, Ingredients, Shogun and Commercial Suicide. Here Kasra picks possibly the cream of the crop with a release that has been hitting clubs hard all over for the past few months. Sometimes the only answer is ‘Mob Justice’. A staggered break, industrial fx and drifting pads open it up with the by now familiar to most ‘hang from the gallows’ vocal that signals the drop into some enormous droning sub-bass with twisted fills and oldskool amen edits. Cuts deep in the mix on any worthy sound system; a Critical anthem for all the Fabric regulars. Flipping over and label boss Kasra joins him in the studio for a joint venture with devastatingly good consequences. Kicking off with a more regular two-step break, piano chords and old soul vox ‘Show You’ rolls into a bouncing stepper with a surging b-line that keeps things moving with pace. One for the marching crew and another good sign of Kasra’s own production progress. Definitely much for to come from in the future from Foreign Concept.

Radikal Guru returns to Moonshine Recordings with a full length album. The CD entitled „The Rootstepa” contains 12 original tracks featuring such vocalists as: Cian Finn, Brother Culture and Mokey Jhayam. The tracks were recorded in various studios in London, Sao Paulo, Cork and Warsaw.Album have received heavy support from DJ Neil Perch (Zion Train), RSD, 6Blocc, Roommate, Bassnectar and many more. Fans of heavy dub and reggae influenced dubstep will love this one.Radikal Guru aka Mateusz Miller is a producer and dj born in northern Poland well known for his reggae-dubstep mash ups and unique sound influenced by dub originators such as King Tubby, Lee Scratch Perry or Scientist. He gained popularity after releasing a series of vinyl singles on Dubbed Out records (UK) in 2008.He started developing his production skills in Poland making trip-hop and jungle beats in 2004. Fascinated by sounds of Asian Underground in 2005 he put’s out a demo album called “The East-West connection” which started spreading around internet community. In 2005 he moved to Cork (Ireland) where he continued expanding his production techniques and started getting more attention by dropping his dj mixes in clubs around Ireland. During that time Radikal Guru sound progressed further when he started experimenting with dub and wide variety of sub genres including dubstep. In October 2008 he had his first tunes released by Z-Audio’s sister label Dubbed Out records and only after few months he got a lot of attention from listeners around the globe and his music was played in radio stations like BBC Asian Network, Sub FM, Rinse FM, Sensimedia Network and many more. From 2009 Radikal Guru is delivering his sound in clubs and festivals around Europe and continues his quest to this day.

After many years on the jungle scene, in 2006 Jacky started the Little Island project, collaborating in Brighton and Barcelona with UK producer Kion on dubby, deep, rootsy material. Tunes by Kion & Murda started to get rotation in crucial UK dances like DMZ, >>FWD , and SuperDubPressure with djs like Mala, Rusko, Tes La Rok, Joe Nice, Nick Argon, BunZer0, Noah D, Daddy G, N-Type and Itchy Robot picking up on the Little Island sound. 2009 also marked the creation of the “JingBong Ting”, a live act comprised of Jacky Murda and Max Powa. JingBong Ting’s first release dropped in 2010 on WAR records, and the second release , complete with video, “Sundown” featuring Top Cat in May 2011. On the Flip you can find a heavy Ragga-Jungle remix by HoT a DJ and Producerliving in Tula, Russia. In 2009 his remix of „Policeman and Soldiers” appeared on the famous jungle label JungleXpeditions. Today HoT continues to push his sound to the worldwide ragga-jungle massive.

On the A side, Walsh has teamed up with Kutz to produce a massive club anthem, Wanted. Kanji Kinetic’s future bass sounds have been causing shockwaves at parties worldwide. Mixing up beats from bassline & 4×4, dubstep and oldskool breakbeat hardcore like no-one else can, he has found support from heavyweights such as Mary Anne Hobbs and Tayo in the UK, and Drop The Lime and Starkey in the US. With a number of well-received releases on respected labels, his production skills are in high demand with a slew of high-profile remixes about to emerge, as well as brand new original material to destroy the party unlike anything before. For Horror Boogie, he has blessed us with “Citizens Unite”, a raw, nasty bassquake, which has been obliterating dancefloors for some time now with its masterful drum programming, insane bass and THAT drum roll. THIS is what drumstep should sound like. Fedka the Irritant is probably best known as the trombonist in the excellent band Pest (Ninja Tune), alongside Ben Pest (Panic Bridge, Victim, Bonus Round). He’s also a seriously original and versatile producer in his own right. He has released on Panic Bridge, alongside the other Pest members and his live “trombone techno” sets are something to behold. “Watch Them Get Killed” is wonky techno at its finest. Its tight drums, chopped up hip-hop vocals and the beautifully deranged, yet ferociously funky melody make this track seriously addictive. Expect to hear a lot more from this man on Horror Boogie Records in the not-too-distant future. Michael Forshaw has smashed many a rave with his live onslaught of fucked up electro, techno, rave and booty. He has released on many labels over the years such as Penalty, Miditonal, Flaw, his own imprint Chan ‘n’ Mikes and most recently, Coin Operated. “Cookietag McStarrwerk” is a live, mashed up, sample-laden (namely the classic “Whoomp! There it is” vocal)  rave/breaks/booty monster and has been a staple of his recent live sets. Last and certainly not least, is the mighty Subhead. As a solo artist, Jason Leach has released on his own Death to Vinyl, Fix UK and Subhead imprints, alongside his work for Mercurochrome, Input Output Inc. and Don’t. In total he has released well over 100 records, having also been involved in several notable collaborations. “Stefan Wolfe” is a driving, peak-time, techno juggernaut. Its atmospheric beginning hypnotises you into a false sense of security, before it hits you with a dose of raw energy – crunchy hi-hats, solid kicks and a funky-ass bassline, leading on to a finale of full-blown squelchy wrongness.

His ‘garbage Pail Beats’, released on Thin Consolation in 2008, were a ‘rump-shaking, head-nodding, feet-shuffling slap in the face, one for the crate-diggers and glitch-lovers’. OH MY DAYS!!! Subtrakt drops the motherload with an album packed with the deepest and finest cuts of sub-driven machine step, by the masters and bringers of 1/4 step Current Value & Dean Rodell – Machine Code!!!’Environments’ has more flavours than an orgy in a Ben and Jerry’s factory, mixing up machine funk in a 1/4 step style with the likes of the already hailed classic ‘Machine Freak’ and the floor pounding “Circadian,” blended with the deeper dub-based creepers like flat line . ‘In the Shell’ and ‘Confessions’ offer a new breed of dubstep a cross of intense techy rhythms and tight grinding bass are compiled with distant haunting pads and vocals that infiltrate and twist your neurons beyond comprehension. Last, but far from least, are the two tracks from me on the album that sum up the diversities of Machine Code’s  ‘Environments’ – ‘Kjg’ is a broken groove number with a growling bass stabbing at air wherever the intense kick pattern allows. This track is laced with ghostly dubby fx that loosely holds the sanity together within its most disturbing sub-existence. ‘The Shadow’ is the complete opposite. Slow, delicate beats produced to perfection give this monster of all bass room to drive through and collapse lungs in its wake. Ross Allen’s Meltdown Music Recordings is kick-starting into life with this stunning mini album/EP from Welsh native and production talent EVM. EVM’s music holds a fine balance between the contemporary and the classic, between UK garage, broken hip-hop, and the vibe of reggae, house and soul, wrapped in velvety production and a technical style all of his own. Title track ‘Groove Content’ has been a mainstay on Ross’s weekly Ministry of sound show for six months, and it’s now in the hands of Gilles Peterson who has already hailed it as a ‘classic,’ supporting it on his BBC Radio 1 show and tearing it up on the main stage at this years’ Sonar Festival. Huw Stephens of Radio 1 also made EVM’s remix of DJ Vadim’s ‘Elope’ his Record of The Week back in Sept 2010. The other tracks on the EP are of a more down beat nature but equally as inspiring; from the Dilla-esque, tech-hop of ‘Falling’ (which features EVM’s vocal talents), to the vocodered groove of The ‘Slow Jam’ and the teched out boom-bap of ‘D N A.’ Liverpudlian vocalist Amy Wilson features and writes on the track ‘Stay,’ a reggae-inflected garage gem, plus the more forward thinking ‘U Want More.’ It’s a diverse EP; Short and sweet and super catchy.

It’s testament to the enduring power of the emergent and divergent bass scene that an artist such as Cloud Boat can release a two sider of such differing proportions and for it to still sound so cohesive. ‘Lions On The Beach’, the lead single on this, Cloud Boat’s debut release is not your archetypal pop song but it’s still most definitely a pop song. 3 minutes and 33 short sweet seconds of Sam Rickett’s Mogwai-esque guitar swathes and Tom Clark’s haunting vocals pitched deliberately low in the mix, cut through with rolling, precise, drum programming and deadly bottom end.On the flip, ‘Bastion’ reveals Cloud Boat’s more emotive side. They started off a recent DJ mix with a Bon Iver track, which is a good jumping off point for Bastion. That is until the sub sneaks in. The love of enchanting melodies, belies a love of the bass, and it’s this juxtaposition and the lilting tones of the high pitched vocals that encapsulate and unite the tracks on this complex and beautifully programmed single.With the knowledge that Cloud Boat have already been hand picked by both James Blake and Mount Kimbie to support them on their respective tours you can get a feel for where this incredibly fresh sounding debut is anchored in. Think Steve Reich vs. Mala sprinkled with a little Thom Yorke and some light fingered Burial along the way. Another beauty of a debut discovery by the force that is R&S.

Joint Forces is a collective of bass fiends from New Zealand. Comprised of Chewie, Mysterious D, and Soul Provider, the group came together from a shared love of the dark beats and heavy bass that once only drum and bass was able to provide. With releases in the hopper for Stupid Fly, Abducted Dubs, and Dub Frequency, the Joint Forces are making the rounds on the international stage with their grimey, techy sound that makes listeners nostalgic for the good old days of 160+ bpms.The boys’ remembrance of the gritty, tech step dnb is apparent in their productions, as metallic snares and dark, grinding basslines bounce back and forth in a dark ballet of bass. On Glidetime, lightly menacing synth stabs play up a dark rave feel before a couple of plodding, grinding basslines fight for bassbin supremacy. On Persuasion, the boys take a more contemporary approach, with a midrange bassline plugging along while a lightly squealing synth makes a play for today’s less patient listeners. Both dark, with a punchy production value, these two from Joint Forces are sure to hit home with dubstep fans with a bit more refined taste.

HESCD001 – Various – Hessle Audio : 116 & Rising – CD x 2
The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far. The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue. There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors. The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’s rich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave. Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts. The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album.

N Types label coms correct each and every time. Budapest born but now Bristol based producer DJ Madd has carved himself a pretty unique trench within his contemporaries over the space of a handful of singles – mainly released on the Boka and Black Box imprints. Going in just as hard as producers like Benga and Caspa, Madd – known to his parents as Peter Simon – manages to retain a lot of space and atmosphere in his productions, fleshing his tracks out with heavy sine wave pulses rather than those mid range frequencies that seem to get included expressly to make you lose your shit on the dancefloor. Flirting with the funk in a similar way to someone like Joker, Madd has a great command of aerated bass lines, tweaking the best force out of his low end and complimenting that speaker pressure with vibrancy and these little flickers of synth colour that lodge themselves deep in your brain for days In his own words when speaking to the Sonic Router blog last year: “appreciating both Rusko and Martyn at the same time is not a crime,”

The ball is certainly rolling in 2011 and next up is a treat from Germanys Lowtec. Founder of highly respected label Workshop he makes his UK label debut on Nonplus Records with two fresh cuts of analogue goodness.a) Lowtec ‘Wonderkidd’ ‘Wonderkidd’ greets us with a vocal sample that morphs keys with a low-fi piano chord before the discordant groove of the main riff comes into effect. Analogue synths dance around the deep chord groove with early detroitisms flexing between a repeating bleeped out pattern. Hypnotic key stabs sink you deeper into the tune that shows us why Lowtec is one of Berlin’s top underground button pushers.aa) Lowtec ‘Looser’ The warm hiss of anaolgue beats starts off the excellent AA tune ‘Looser’. Dabs of a.m radio vocals progress the tune amongst a myriad of discreet electronic bleeps that escalate and scatter around the rhythm. Coarsely sampled ‘Shakir-like’ string chords provide the main sequence to set off this excellent tune. One for the deeper heads out there.

NONPLUS012 – Boddika – You Tell Me / Breezin – 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus+ label owners Instra:mental have been working away on solo projects in 2011 with Al Bleek working under his Boddika alias and Kid Drama as Jon Convex. Here we have Boddika’s first output on Nonplus+ after his debut on Naked Lunch in 2010 and prior to his forthcoming EP on Swamp 81. His work has been supported by DJs across the board such as Benji B, Oneman, Scuba, Shy FX, Martyn, Ramadanman, Joy Orbison, Leofah, Skream and Zed Bias amongst many others.a) Boddika ‘You Tell Me’ ‘You Tell Me’ takes us back to the 80s with its electro tinged thumping drums and freaky synths. What at first seems to be a pretty straightforward track slowly mutates into an ugly beast with its pitch bent lead and warping drum grooves that slowly swing so far out and eventually re-sync with each significant transition. Not for the seasick.aa) Boddika ‘Breezin’ On the flip Boddika provides another striped back dancefloor warmer but here he comes with a 4×4 drum pattern. With very few elements he exploits them all to their limits and the track moves with an everchanging undercurrent of acid bass coated with subtle synth melodies that work their way around the bass in a mesmerizing arrangement. Another example of Boddika’s talent for working sound to maximum effect and keeping it simple but effective.

Emalkay continues his unstoppable run of form with the new single ‘Fabrication’, a track that is as addictive as it is hard-hitting. Drifting in on the soft siren call of the vocals, Emalkay filters the bass through the intro, building to the drop of the catchy, mutating bassline. The organic skitter of hi-hats gives the sparse drum pattern its swing, leaving the bass to do the damage! On the flip ‘Massive’ cranks up the pressure with a serious head down steppa. The razor sharp bassline cuts through the track like a knife, held down only by the stomp of the drums, while the ebb and flow of the pads gives an underlying eerie atmosphere to the track.2010 was a huge year for Emalkay. Having been thrown in to the limelight by the phenomenal ‘When I Look At You’ towards the end of 2009, he has continued to penetrate through the scene with a series of quality releases like ‘Crusader / Power Tool’ and ‘Solid State / Battle Suit’. CIV020 – dÉbruit – Sis Sürpriz EP (inc 3-D artwork and 3-D glasses) – 12″ Vinyl
When French producer dÉbruit relocated to London, it was just the start of a journey that would take him much further east than Hackney. dEbruit explains; “I lived in a Turkish neighbourhood in London and my productions are always a result of curiosity over the sounds and people around me. I wanted to learn more and try something with Turkish music and instruments so I travelled to Turkey in October, and I’m so glad I did.” The end results of dÉbruit’s travels are the four painstakingly crafted tracks of Şiş Sürpriz (which translates as Skewer Surprise). Traditional Turkish folk instruments are coupled with modern, synthetic sounds on an EP that’s full of eastern promise. Opener Accordé Don combines accordion and darbuka drums (a kind of goblet drum) with “bump-hop” beats, whilst Turkish Ish features zurna flutes, talkbox effects and scything synths. Mezdé’s bassheavy, low-slung bounce deploys the string sounds of the kabak kemane – a violin-like instrument originating from Southeastern Turkey – with darbuka and davul drums. Zurnaflutes and synths return on the slo-mo, chopped and screwed digi-funk of Lil Zurna. Born Xavier Thomas and raised in Brittany, France, dÉbruit’s name is an amalgamation of the French words debris (broken glass) and bruit (noise). His boundary-smashing, genreswerving style deliberately veers towards the chaotic – “I like when electronic music and instruments lose control of what they’re meant to do”, he adds. Şiş Sürpriz is the third in dÉbruit’s trilogy of EPs which began with futuristic electro hip-hop workout Let’s Post Funk featuring Jamie Woon and Om’Mas Keith, and was followed by 2010’s African highlife inspired Spatio Temporel. The trio of releases all feature 3-D artwork by German designer Rainbowmonkey, and 3-D glasses are also included for your viewing pleasure.dÉbruit is currently crafting a debut album based around trips to West Africa and recordings with the region’s indigenous musicians and traditional instruments. dÉbruit has also been honing his live show which now incorporates a three-piece band, thumb pianos, African drums, highlife guitar, talk box and more, all accompanied by live visuals from Rainbowmonkey. The new and improved live experience will be unveiled at the dates below and dÉbruit’s album is due out later this year.

It’s slightly cheesy but enchantingly peculiar and one can’t help but be moved by the sheer amount of emotive musicality present.This musicality is led by the hand into more obscure territories in ‘Takedown’, with its broken beats, chordal pads, and simple melodies creating an ethereal soundscape punctuated by clever yet soulful drumwork.In the great tradition of keeping the truly weird stuff for the flip, the first b-side, ‘Box of Tapes’ unleashes an aural assault of acid infused dissociative chaos, which hangs on for dear life to a solid rhythm and chord motif. This format is 3X12” Vinyl & 2 X CD packaged together in a gatefold sleeve shrink wrapped. The compilation exists as a way to unite the entire Hessle roster, as well as allowing them an avenue to put out work by friends and producers they have been unable to work with so far. The first disc is all new work plus a second has a selection of choice cuts from the back catalogue. There’s also work from producers who they feel have shaped the label’s aesthetic, like D1’s ‘Sub Zero’, whose sub bass stabs were a staple of the early DMZ sets that they initially united over back in 2005. One of their close affiliates, Addison Groove is also featured, his anthem ‘Footcrab’ having done so much to bring the tough tempo of juke to the world’s dancefloors. The subtle pitch-shifting of a looping hip hop vocal and the polyrhythmic patter of rim shots and cymbals on ‘Fuk Tha 101’ are unmistakably his. Another producer previously unreleased on Hessle is synth-mad Randomer whose ‘Brunk’ features an industrial strength kick and finishes up with ghostly pads invoking musique concrete. The disc is rounded off by Bristol’s Peverelist, whose own dub-soaked productions, as well as those released on his label Punch Drunk, owe so much to that city’srich musical traditions. On ‘Sun Dance’ synth chords bring to mind the dystopian drum n bass of DJ Krust, the track driven forwarded by paper-like hi-hats and cymbals. There’s a single claustrophobic Hammond note held through to the close alongside the echoing sounds of water dripping in a cave.Disc one kicks off with the spritely chimes and shuffling beat of Elgato’s ‘Music’, whose muted vocal chant was used to such beautiful effect in Kennedy’s recent FABRICLIVE mix. Untold bring’s detuned chords, jangling glass and a cheeky synth line, breaking down into mutant funky house. Blawan’s ‘Potchla Vee’ reveals some unexpected instrumentation: the skittering of what sounds like the cogs of a clock gives little breathing room to the assault of tribal drums and processed grunts. The Pearson Sound track ‘Stifle’ seems to slow things down, with an adenoidal vocal snippet acting as counterfoil to the percussive snap of the drums, delicate EQing and synth washes providing characteristic texture. Once again on ‘Twice’, Joe demonstrates the effectiveness of unexpected drum sampling, with a disconnected beat cooked up out of error bleeps and the tap of a typewriter. Pangaea’s own contribution is a rave homage; oscillating between synth stabs and a filtered ragga MC sample, the track is layered with a bouncy acid bassline, creating a phantom jump up effect. Romania’s TRG was Hessle’s first release and here builds on his mutant garage template, with a reverb-soaked drum kit jostling against some analogue pads and a seagull-sounding distorted warble. James Blake, re-edits an earlier Hessle release, bringing the processed vocals to the fore much in the style of his recent album. It’s soul music that’s undecidedly electronic, the vocals screwed and chopped into the background, a virtuoso display of arrangement ordering a lacklustre pair of cowbells, a chorus of shuffles, croaks and pads into an infectious slow burner.

This release is based on the Philips ‘Videopac G7000′ game console that came out back in 1978. With the limited choice of sounds coming from this computer, a complete album was recorded that will tear up dance floors this year. Moving on to the full LP we are treated to the complete gamut of Instra:mental’s ability. Tracks like ‘Aggro Acid’ and ‘Talkin Mono’ give us crude analogue acid modulation at its rawest that twists and gurgles across the sound spectrum with mesmeric manipulation, whilst others such as ‘Memory Implant’, ‘Waterfall’ and ‘Plok’ take us deep into synth arrangements that have become synonymous with their name.

Having worked predominantly at higher tempos and made a significant impact on the Drum and bass scene in 2008/9/10, most of this album is focused on the 120-140 bpm tempo and they have studied every avenue to seek out new and interesting possibilities for originality within a tempo range that has been so thoroughly exploited over the years. They take elements of eras gone by and revitalise them with the use of old skool equipment mixed with modern production techniques. As usual their impressive hoard of vintage hardware plays an integral part in their characteristic sound. Whether it be techno, dubstep, drum and bass or electro that they turn their hand to, their Instra:mental sound shines through and makes genre irrelevant.

The SubDivision return home to Paradise Lost with the Open Your Eyes EP: epic vibes, hypnotic bass work, and complex programming manifest themselves as what might be considered their best work to date, and surely a production which defines their unique style for building cinematic tracks of epic proportions. For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ (worked for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings) was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping.

Manchester’s Illum Sphere makes his debut for Tectonic, the young producer unleashing his finest work to date with two killer cuts that demonstrate a wealth of musical influences while setting new directions and expectations for the post-dubstep generation to look towards. It’s a fresh start to the year and a taste of the way Tectonic is moving in 2011.The lead cut is ‘Dreamstealin’, a powerful, twisted track that opens with a dramatic, tense intro – a soundtrack to enormous alien machinery grinding into action. A demonic cello forms the backbone to the piece, warped into a cybernetic frenzy and sounding like nothing you’ve heard before, scrambling into a bit-crushed radio frequency sweep at the drop. Then, in comes the frantic drum pattern – high energy movements in a heavily swung style, with hints of J Dilla or Flying Lotus as the tune builds up again by means of a demented, brooding melody. Eventually it peaks and slips into a more relaxed, funked up vibe, easing down from tense build. Dark energy for the leftfield dancefloor at its finest. Flip to ‘Blood Music’, an equally dreamy affair, though less tense and foreboding. Silky melodic lines run over heavily grooved but rolling beats with a friendly nod to the sound of Burial with its post-club come-down “melt in ecstasy” vibe. Finally, an excellent remix of ‘Blood Music’ by friend and fellow Mancunian Indigo pushes into a ghostly new incarnation with swooping bass and more broken, fragile beats.

While L-Wiz is new to Kapsize, the Swedish duo are in no way new to the dubstep scene – drawing attention with killer tracks like ‘Girl From Codeine City’ and the classic ‘Girlfriend’, the production pair have been making high quality dubstep tracks since the early 2004-5 days, even launching the first ever release on Dub Police! It is with pleasure that we announce ‘Straitjacket’ and ’4.42 Oz’ find a home on Kapsize! Keeping in the spirit of Joker’s own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output – pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. ‘Straitjacket’ is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the ‘purple’ sound we all know and love at Kapsize – while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Flip for the equally melodic ’4.42 Oz’ which takes a more relaxed approach in vibe, taking things in a futuristic direction while simultaneously referencing the past. The power of youth is being felt all around the world right now, as dictators fall and governments wobble in the face of youngsters fighting against apparently dark futures. Here, Shifting Peaks harnesses some of that energy for a split 12” double header from two of the most promising young producers around. We’d like to think 18 year old South Londoner Alfie Macgibbon aka Graphics has been out there sticking it to The Man whilst jumping around to POW! and keeping the Old Bill on their toes. But we don’t hear much from him tbh, and from the depth and quality of these two future-steppers,’ Blue Top’ and ‘Brian Said to Me’, we reckon he’s been hidden away, quietly building his own vision of the future while real life goes on elsewhere. Birminghams’ Emvee’s is of an age where he doesn’t need to worry about the Tory Millionaire clubs further education plans, having established himself way back in the heady days of 2009 with his landmark ‘Glitch Dub’ on NMBRS. Now he unleashes a tropical banger in the shape of the percussive floor shaker ‘Windrush’ and a driving, Funky-tech bumper ‘Strength’. Two young producers, 4 tracks, a world to win. Skweee, also known as the synthetic Scandinavian funk, is a worldwide phenomena hailing originally from the frosty alleys of Stockholm and Helsinki. The raw, unpolished electronic funk tracks of this album were recorded in 2003-2006, when the term itself didn’t yet exist. Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue  synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Take a trip through the electro ragga of  ‘War’ and ‘Buttons’ and simmer down with the trippy krautness of ’1000 Years’. Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow.Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy.Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.
