MODULE002 The Cleaner / Raindance – Hybris Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Modulations is the proud younger sibling of Critical music launched in 2010. The label got a head start with Lenzman and now brings yet more vacuum-packed freshness, this time from new boy Hybris. An awesome second release for the fledgling imprint that’s got people talking throughout the scene. The schedule for Modulations will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. First up is ‘The Cleaner’ with sharp drums and that dangerous subliminal, almost toxic bassline. Serving as the perfect accompaniment to ‘Raindance’ with its thunder cloud atmospherics, it has the electricity, the thickness in the air and delivers the quiet before the stormy drops. The single is a perfecect combination, even meteorologically, and should make any drum and bass connoisseur fidget with anticipation for more from Hybris. ‘Raindance’ is a hauntingly beautiful take on what we would expect from darkside of drum and bass. The tribal vocals and broken beat percussion make it a tune to be remembered with subtle but sick bass and a fantastic spatial awareness. It shows how less can be so much more with a classy production prowess that many drum and bass veterans still strive for. So hold tight and be prepared to be carried away in the hypnotic magic of ‘Raindance’.

NONPLUS007 Ochre / Cascade Failure – Vaccine Nonplus Records 12″ Vinyl
Nonplus 007 sees the Californian based producer Vaccine make her debut on the label with a brace of tracks in her signature style of rich musical textures and ingenious drum arrangements. With a wealth of releases on labels such as Hotflush and Tempa, its safe to say that quality control has never been an issue for her and this release is no exception.
a) Vaccine ‘Ochre’ – The a-side ‘Ochre’ with its scratchy lo-fi beats and rugged gliding bassline is textbook Vaccine. An abstract looping vocal brings an almost soulful edge to the track but it still remains tense and gritty throughout. Doing damage in clubs across the world but just as relevant at home, this track will stay in your playlist for the long haul.
aa) Vaccine ‘Cascade failure’ – Slightly mellower than the a-side but on more of an emotive tip, this track plays with orchestral “Burialesque” chords and melodies and really makes you get your thinking cap on. Once again her trademark lo-fi beats and percussion swirl around in seemingly effortless complex patterns, with layer upon layer of chords and melodies the track has so much depth its almost impossible to take it all in with just one listen.

Two years since his mesmerising debut LP ‘It’s a Jazz Thing’ transported d&b dancefloors across the world back to the halcyon days of early-noughties liquid-funk bliss, the unabashed ambassador of vintage d&b is back doing exactly that: vintage d&b. The template is the same – lavish melodies, spring-fresh beats and unfathomably orginal soul samples – but this history lesson just grew some meaty balls: ‘NRG ’93’ channels the spirit of old-skool hardcore; ‘Skyward Bound’ threads classic Amen clatter and heavy low-end through sublime ’70s guitar loops; and the wrinkle-tastic Ragga Twins jet in to holler magificently over rollicking experimental stepper ‘Enter The Jungle’. HUMA8030 Hardcore Will Never Die / Systems Activated – Zardonic Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Zardonic join’s forces with Counterstrike & Mumblz. Zardonic’s brand of Drum & Bass has four main elements: the Melodic element (as there’s nothing I hate the most than these stupid dark tracks that have no melody on them and it’s all about noise and no key notes), the Latin element (coming from Venezuela, savage grooves just have to be there), the Industrial element (yup, I like noise, with melody, but always a reason behind my tracks sounding so overcrowded), and obviously the Metal element, since I’m stuck using minor thirds, fourths, fifths, diminished fifths, or ninths, and a lot of amp simulators to add that organic tone in my reeces and leads. That pretty much sums it up. Melody. Latin. Industrial. Metal.

Ushering in a new project for Darkestral (Galaxicos), Pearson Sound aka Ramadanman gradually opens out a warmly shimmering pad over delicate percussion track that glows over an undercurrent of soft bass propulsion, and makes explicit an emotive, hazy, laidback vibe for the ensuing long summer days ahead on the delightful ‘Down With You’. Like drowning in a velveteen cloud, ‘Down With You’ describes a place or a state of being that feels wholly desirable. ‘Higher’ alternatively takes you in different directions at the same time, personal, pastoral, dreamlike, imaginary.. summer again but with a ratchet rhythm that keeps you wide eyed at this environment of fantastical scenery he has created. VOOMUSIC002 Voodoo 2 – Raiden & Khanage Voodoo Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. We are proud to bring you Voodoo Music 002. After the success of debut release from head honcho Raiden, Voodoo comes correct once more for the second release. Two tracks from Raiden & Khanage that continue the ongoing collaborative partnership between the pair that has seen releases on Renegade Hardware & Offkey- and now its the turn of V002. The tracks have been supported by Doc Scott, dBridge, Loxy, Rockwell, Genotype, Morphy & Data amongst others. Here is the lowdown. Amnesia Haze: The track began life at 2am on a pitch black winters night in Tallinn after Raiden & Khanage had been worked on ‘King Stays King’ and the ‘Mirage Remix’. After a break in studio time listening to Jeff Mills’ most abstract works the track began to roll out. Guided by the substance that the track takes its name from the pair wanted to create a brooding, sinister tribal banger- and without a doubt achieved this. Pounding sub bass, rolling percussion and haunting strings all add to the picture, the word Voodoo could not be more any appropriate when it comes to Amnesia Haze. The track ignited the flame that is voodoo music.
8798: Encouraged by the reactions to ‘Haze’ Raiden & Khanage followed up with 8798- The perfect tune to pair with Haze. The track carries a stark vibe, driven by percussion, tense drum work and accents and effects that further add to the landscape of the track. In contrast to the textures of ‘Haze’,’8798′ carries on a single minded mission. Underpinned by a bass that is 50,000 leagues below- 8798 moves along with weighty confidence as a result of the rumbling frequency. The brief was very clear from the very beginning for these two tracks- to come with something that was unmistakably voodoo, bringing you a complete picture of what the label represents, and without having to put that into anymore words than we have already – We think you know.

A deep as the sea reese drives the tune along before we are introduced to the most sublime vocal beckoning us to touch her soul. If you love Seba’s recent output ie…Return to Forever or Painted Skies, then this one is definitely for you!!! AA. THIS IS OUR HOUSE House samples in drum & bass? That’s unheard of! Actually we all know that’s incorrect, but when done by Seba it takes on a different meaning. Giving a huge nod back to the oldschool, we see Seba delving into pure house inspired drum & bass. Shuffling drums with added chop switch-ups along with pulsating bass rolls the tune along. The classic vocal “Let there be house” commands us and keeps our attention leading up to the amazing breakdown. Cascading arpeggios along with the extended sample make this a great tune in a way only Seba can pull off!

BRK015 Bleeps / Idée D’un Tropique – Bowly Berkane Sol 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. After leaving behind the Somalian pirates, Geiom is cruising the sunny waters of the Indian Ocean when he picks up a distress signal on his scanner. He follows the signal until he locates a tiny remote island and a guy called Bowly, who said that he was on his way from France to the New World, but got totally lost. Judging by the age of the map he was using its easy to see how. Bowly spent his time on the island hanging out with the locals who amuse themselves by creating a unique style of music on some amazing handcrafted instruments. Geiom helps Bowly get on his way again, and leaves him with a more useful map. Some months later, Bowly beams over his music as a gift from his new found homeland in Canada – the tracks are like some strange mutation of those distant tropical players and the UK-based pirate radio transmissions that Bowly has been tuning into – Geiom loves the result and decides to send them straight over to Transition in London for mastering and release on Berkane Sol. PHONICA005 Play The Game EP – Midland Phonica Records 12″ Vinyl
London’s Phonica Records calls upon new talent Midland for its fifth 12″ release, a four track EP that also includes a remix from Dexter. The Leeds-based producer is set to blow up in 2010, having announced his arrival last month with the “Your Words Matter” 12″ on Aus Music, a collaboration with pal Ramadanman. “Play The Game” begins moodily, Midland setting the scene with deep dub-chords before letting rip with a beautifully controlled breakbeat and a warm, insistent bassline. When the doleful string-pads arrive you know you’re dealing with an anthem, and the intensity continues to rise as yearning, ethereal vocal snippets a la Burial, Pangaea or Joy Orbison skirt of the rhythm’s surface. The track is a masterclass in building tension, with a succession of nail-biting builds giving way to subtle but devastating drops, and in this Midland shows uncommon maturity for such a young producer. On the remix front we find Holland’s one and only Dexter. Fresh from “Redbox” – on Steffi’s Dolly imprint, Dexter completely reinvents Midland’s “Play The Game”, turning out a finished product that really doesn’t sound like anything else out there right now. Driven by a warped, distorted bassline that recalls the hoover sound of 90s Belgium and Kevin Saunderson in his pomp, teamed with dramatic strings, old-school percussion and positively oceanic breakdowns, it’s big-room, electro-inflected techno of the highest order. “Leitmotif” finds Midland exploring an even deeper techno style, strengthening the groove with spectral FX and panning, dubbed-out percussion, and then scything it in half with a buzzing, trance-inducing bassline – this one has ’secret weapon’ written all over it, primed for the club but with a pleasingly introspective quality as well. ‘Head Down’ continues Midland’s penchant for melodic, echodrenched chords and disembodied vocal textures, this time riding an irresistibly skippy 4/4 rhythm. DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
The first DSM release of the new decade sees them continue to push leftfield, forward thinking drum & bass. 2009 was big year for Data with releases on Revolution, Horizons, premier dubstep label Tempa aswell as the mighty Metalheadz and for his first release of 2010 he returns to DSM with two tracks that cement his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative producers in drum & bass at the moment. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscent of late 90’s techstep. For the AA side he teams up with newcomer Kingsin for ‘Baggage’, and it is perhaps Data at his most experimental with sharp, staccato, almost off beat drums and haunting synth lines coupled with a his trademark growling bass. Both sides show a diversity in his production and goes to prove he is not one to stick to any particular style, but rather constantly innovate and push boundaries with his music.

This one has been tearing things down in its slow-burning venom, and is the perfect lick to get the party started, or send a ready crowd into a frenzy with its hypnotic bass. Two collaborative tracks from Quarta 330 and LV, made when the pair met the day after Hyperdub’s fifth anniversary party in November last year. These tunes exemplify the kind of meeting of minds where the best of both producers comes to the surface, as Quarta 330’s 8-bit abstraction and melodic sense contrasts nicely with LV’s characteristic lush figures and shuffling rhythms. ‘Hylo’ finds 8-bit melodies made from rebuilt Gameboys and sonar-like bleeps weaved into the crunchy snap of a reverse drum beat and warm chords, breaking down into a sonorous motif before stepping up the pace once more. It’s an energetic mix of brittle and lush sounds. On the AA side, ‘Suzuran’ is a joint remix of Quarta 330’s own remix of Japanese chiptunes artists Dong. LV places the slurring space pop of the Japanese vocoder vocal melody inside a remix constructed from syncopated drums and offkey bleeping patterns. The results are catchy and alien, as melodic sweetness is juxstaposed with the tension of the setting.

Take a listen to Streisand Effect’s booming crunk beats, heavy basses, epic synthesizer leads and cristallic arpeggios and choose for yourself. Dubstep – hero Tes La Rok’s outstanding remix stays true to the original but adds some extra dubby aesthetics to Randy’s storming soccer stadium skweee vibes. Backside of the record is dominated by more moody and naturalistic atmospheres. Tako To Ama (The Dream of the Fisherman’s Wife) is Randy’s homage to the grandiose tradition of Japanese tentacle erotica. In its Asiatic moods and sharp synthesizer stabs You can almost feel the slippery tentacles of an octopus wandering around in your bodily cavities! Record comes to an end with Lebensraum, an eight minute long meditative disco reggae. On Lebensraum the listener finds a totally new aspect of Randy Barracuda’s aural art: gone are the rapid staccato melodies and usual stiff funkiness. Maybe Credit00, a mysterious East-German bongo player, gave the track its naturalistic charm and the comfy aura of a forest in the springtime.

Caspa’s success was no fluke though, in fact you’d be hard pressed to find a harder-working person in the industry, having built up his ever-growing empire from scratch. In 2010 he is a man in demand, off the back of his debut artist album last year “Everybody’s Talking, Nobody’s Listening!” he has remixed the likes of Deadmau5, Depeche Mode, Mike Snow and most recently U.S superstar Ludacris. He’s helped bring through acts such as Emalkay, The Others, D1 and Subscape through his labels Dub Police and Subsoldiers and via his regular sell-out label roster club shows, most notably the pre-mentioned Fabric residency. His DJ schedule is still out of control with an average of 15-20 shows per month, booked up 6-months in advance and this summer the shows are only getting bigger. In June he’ll make his debut at Sonar festival… On the main stage… In between Dizzee Rascal and The Chemical Brothers – things have changed for the boy from Chiswick. And on to “My Style!”, the brand new mix series from Dub Police that once again plans to break the mould of what a dubstep mix can be with a number of acts already being lined up for future editions. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves; this is No.1 and who better to take the controls than the label head honcho Caspa. In the mix he takes us through the full spectrum of dubstep sound with dance floor slayers from the likes of Skream, Emalkay and Doctor P through to the more eclectic sounds of Joy Orbison, D1 and Joker. Of course there’s an untold amount of exclusives to boot, giving fans an early preview of some of the biggest records set to blow up in the summer months, with brand new material from the Dub Police / Subsoldiers camp.
From the 23 tracks selected we see Caspa couple upfront and unheard material with some of the scene’s biggest anthems of the last year with Emalkay’s “When I Look At You’, Joy Orbison’s now classic ‘Hyph Mngo’ and Caspa’s massive remix of Deadmau5 “I Remember” all featuring throughout the mix. Often choosing to position himself as an outsider, Alaska’s success has never been limited to that of the UK- orientated drum and bass scene. He has collaborated under the Paradox name with some of greatest contemporary musicians the world has to offer, including Herbie Hancock, Bill Laswell, Shobha Gurtu, Toshinori Kondo and Bernie Worrell. His new album The Mesozic Era which is to be released on May 24th 2010, is the third in a trilogy of solo Alaska lp’s and a follow up to 2006’s successful Arctic Foundations.
The stunning packaging boasts Triple Snow-White Vinyl and a Solid-Black Compact Disc, something that hasn’t been manufactured before in drum and bass. As a bonus, the CD includes more from the infamous Sample Me series – specially edited breakbeat samples for aspiring producers to loop and splice – and shows Alaska’s commitment to the grass roots of the scene, giving something back to the fans and those he’s inspired. When he’s not in the studio, Alaska is inevitably on tour and continues to entertain crowds with his live shows truly worldwide (having only just returned from Alaska shows in Australia). Armed only with his trusty Amiga, synths and a mic, he performs a truly live PA, reconstructing tracks from his back catalogue and editing beats on the fly. He has performed over 180 live PA’s covering Australia, USA, Asia, Europe and beyond, and continues to venture into unchartered territory to represent his sound. It’s been 4 years since the Arctic Foundations album and a decade has passed by for the fans of the Virtual Virtuosos LP so It’s about time Alaska delivered the third chapter to complete the ambient-jungle trilogy. Alaska has been living in sub-zero temperatures whilst programming the album, and the frostbite’s reflected in every avenue of the LP. The album features pure ambient-jungle, Sample Me drum patterns for producers to sample, downtempo drum and bass and the debut ambient collaboration of Alaska & Robert Manos plus famous trance siren Kirsty Hawkshaw returns for two numbers on the LP. Arctic Music has raised the bar to deliver unique formats for analogue and digital lovers alike, with stunning and beautiful Triple Snow-White Vinyl and Solid-Black Compact Disc packages.
