New D&B Releases

SOM011 – Black Sun Empire, State Of Mind & Bulletproof / NC-17, Telekinesis feat KC – Roulette / Micronaps – 12″ Vinyl
SOM 011: State of Mind, Black Sun Empire and Bulletproof – Roulette – State of Mind and Black Sun Empire are back on SOM wax. This time around Bulletproof gets in on the action, and the result: the mighty Roulette. Roulette is unashamedly heavy but at the same time super smooth, and it has been doing the damage all over the world in the sets of some of the scene’s biggest names. NC-17, Telekinesis feat KC – On the other side Micronaps is just as crisp. Labels from all walks including Virus, BSE and C4C were literally begging for this tune but somehow SOM got ahold of it. What more is there to say than this tune absolutely smacks it: A real underground favorite. Here is what some fans have to say about this great 12 on soundcloud: ”This is amazing, must own this”. ”Flawless production! It sounds super open and clean, couldnt have been better!” ”There should be a download button about here…” ”Thats a hell of a 12 inch”

DMND001 – BTK – Things I Do / Things I Do (Spectrasoul Remix) – 12″ Vinyl
Brazil has turned out some of the world’s greatest D&B ever since DJ Marky was discovered by Bryan G and his V Recordings camp. From Marky XRS and Patife to one of Brazil’s other great D&B talents, BTK, you know that you’re always getting quality music with something special injected into it. Drawing from his love of Metalheadz and classic drum & bass, BTK lends ‘Things I Do’ a nostalgic feel that’s undoubtedly going to get dancefloors fired up, but has a refinement and class that comes with maturity. Shogun warriors Spectrasoul step up for remix duty on the flip, taking BTK’s original and smoothing it out to its very barest elements. It’s a mystery how Spectrasoul manage to make a few minimal parts fit and move together effortlessly, but this remix is further proof that they’re on top of their game. This is the first release of many from the brand new Swiss label Demand Records. To throw in a junglist cliche – don’t sleep! Support from DJ Lee, John B, Simon Bassline Smith, Nicky Blackmarket, Flight, Storm, to name a few..

SHB010 – Panic Girl – Panic Girl Remixes – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Finish copy promo. For over six years, shadybrain is forcing innovation in Drum and Bass. With it’s 10th vinyl this is made clear more than ever. ‘The Panic Girl Remixes’ join various high profile artists who have never been combined on a release before: dBridge, Phace, Duo Infernale, Skyence, as well as newcomer Sone. The base for all their remixes was Panic Girl’s ‘Burn And Rise EP’, a trip-hop release which was published on shadybrain in early 2010. Phace gets the EP going with his trademark machine-funk sound twisting up the title track ‘Burn And Rise’, while Duo Infernale burn a deep but dancefloor oriented fireworks of Panic Girl’s ‘Hide And Seek’. dBridge himself then extracts the essence of ‘Blue Lights’, taking the listener to a place dark as eternal night. The release is completed by two non Drum and Bass tunes by Skyence and Sone, the first one delivering finest electronica with a wonky groove, while Sone is unleashing a monster of mashed up Dubstep. DJ Support from: Pendulum, Doc Scott, dBridge, Noisia, Phace, DJ Flight, Loxy, Klute,C4C, Kasra, Cern, Misanthrop, Counterstrike, and many more..’

WARM018 – Seba – Vanity / Nostalgia – 12″ Vinyl
Not many producers in drum & bass or music in general can have the sort of career where every piece of music that comes out of their studio is pure excellence. Sebastian Ahrenberg is one of the few musicians that fits easily into the category of excellence. This is his fourth release with Warm Communications and we couldn’t be more pleased with the results! A. VANITY – This is a proper bass workout from the man. Things kick off with super snappy breaks with amazing effects layered on top! Dark atmospheres creep in giving the tune amazing tension leading into what the tune is all about….bass! Distorted, thunderous bass leads the tune into some balanced keys giving the tune that perfect balance of rough and smooth Seba is known for! AA. NOSTALGIA – If you’re a fan of Seba’s uplifting, spine-tingling pieces…then this tune is for you! A solid, rolling break leading into uplifting synths and a guitar-like melody while the pulsating bassline will give any soundsystem a run for it’s money! This is a truly “hands in the air” kinda vibe that we know and love from Seba!

GEN175005 – Switch Technique – Did / Exo – 12″ Vinyl
Switch Technique is the first artist to get a solo release on The Outside Agency’s groundbreaking crossover label One Seven Five. So, what does this mean? It means that he has pulled off that which only very few can manage: he mixed hardcore kickdrums and drum & bass snares into what has become known as crossbreed.. and he made it sound good. DID is a deep dive into the mind of a psychopath, continuously hammered by gutwrenching kickdrum one hundred and seventy-five times per minute. EXO on the flip strips the crossbreed sound down to its bare exoskeleton. Go on, put on the exoskeleton and see for yourself!

DISF012 – Phaeleh – Falling – 12″ Vinyl
‘Falling’ Disfigured Dubz kick off the New Year with this single by Bristolian producer Phaeleh, hot off the back of his debut album ‘Fallen Light’. With this offering, he sticks very much to his trademark style. An intricate and ever progressing drum track provides the spine for the thought provoking cloudy atmospheres, glittering melodies and moody chords. He somehow manages to catch a similar vibe to early hardcore and acid house with its feeling of optimism and a new found freedom. Vocal snippets of ‘Life is so crazy ‘ and ‘let you go’ give the track a sense of meaning and compliment the musical elements perfectly. ‘Falling (Kulture Remix)’ On the flipside we have a remix by fellow Disfigured Dubz artist Kulture. He’s obviously picked up on the hardcore vibe and pushed it even further in that direction by adding an amen which automatically makes it sound like a lost hit from the early 90s. Beefing up the bass line and more vocal processing turns the original calm inducing track into an absolute dance floor destroyer but without over complicating it. An interesting insight into how dubstep could be taking dance music full circle.

BOKA033 – Skinnz – Keep It Gutta / Euphorbia – 12″ Vinyl
12” YELLOW VINYL – Ltd to 500 Copies Worldwide. Bristol based Skinnz unleashes his debut solo release after more than 5 years in the game! His productions date back to an appearance on a Destructive Recordings compilation back in 2005 alongside the likes of Skream, Toastyboy, Distance and Vex’d. More recently his collabs with I.D have seen releases on labels such as Pinch’s Earwax and Double Science. “Keep It Gutta” features soaring synthetic soul chords, like Joker’s ‘purple wow’ sound with aggro elements sublimated into a crisp urban elegance. “Euphorbia” strays into Martyn/Joy Orbison territory, its fizzing drone chords and soul vocal samples compressed around a bassier but Grime-inclined beat to breathless effect! Currently receiving heavy Radio1 / 1Xtra support from Mistajam and Ras Kwame, along with Mary Anne Hobbs, 16bit, Kito, Pinch, Mensah, I.D, Baobinga, Akira Kiteshi, Jayglo & more!

PTN008 – Hackman – Made Up My Mind / Bam Bam – 10″ Vinyl
Hackman surrenders his last single before his album drops. Moving from his technicolour funky / grime hybrid of his first PTN excursion, ‘Made Up My Mind’ & ‘BAM BAM’ descends into solid house beats and hefty basslines. Look out for his forthcoming album on PTN in 2011.

PL012 – The Subdivision / 501 / HLZ – Open Your Eyes EP – 12″ Vinyl
The SubDivision return home to Paradise Lost with the Open Your Eyes EP: epic vibes, hypnotic bass work, and complex programming manifest themselves as what might be considered their best work to date, and surely a production which defines their unique style for building cinematic tracks of epic proportions. For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ (worked for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings) was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping.

TEC047 – Illum Sphere – Dreamstealin – 12″ Vinyl
Manchester’s Illum Sphere makes his debut for Tectonic, the young producer unleashing his finest work to date with two killer cuts that demonstrate a wealth of musical influences while setting new directions and expectations for the post-dubstep generation to look towards. It’s a fresh start to the year and a taste of the way Tectonic is moving in 2011. The lead cut is ‘Dreamstealin’, a powerful, twisted track that opens with a dramatic, tense intro – a soundtrack to enormous alien machinery grinding into action. A demonic cello forms the backbone to the piece, warped into a cybernetic frenzy and sounding like nothing you’ve heard before, scrambling into a bit-crushed radio frequency sweep at the drop. Then, in comes the frantic drum pattern – high energy movements in a heavily swung style, with hints of J Dilla or Flying Lotus as the tune builds up again by means of a demented, brooding melody. Eventually it peaks and slips into a more relaxed, funked up vibe, easing down from tense build. Dark energy for the leftfield dancefloor at its finest. Flip to ‘Blood Music’, an equally dreamy affair, though less tense and foreboding. Silky melodic lines run over heavily grooved but rolling beats with a friendly nod to the sound of Burial with its post-club come-down “melt in ecstasy” vibe. Finally, an excellent remix of ‘Blood Music’ by friend and fellow Mancunian Indigo pushes into a ghostly new incarnation with swooping bass and more broken, fragile beats.

New Bass Music Promos

ROTTUN007 – Downlink – Biohazard / Zombie Apocolypse – 12″ Vinyl
Downlink has been punishing dancefloors all over the planet with his heavy brand of dubstep. With roots in Jungle & DnB, he is no stranger to the vile side of subsonic dance music. Growing up in a cold industrial town in British Columbia, Canada, he was first introduced to dubstep in 2007 and soon after took to production. While maintaining an appreciation for the sparse and laid-back vibes of the old school, Downlink set out to explore a more frantic, adrenaline fuelled style, influenced by everything from heavy metal to astrophysics. His first two releases charted at #1 on several popular online music stores and soon he found his way onto Rottun Recordings which seemed a suiting place for his music. While consistently coming up with sick material time after time, he has gained DJ support from the likes of Nero, Excision, Datsik, Rusko, Dieselboy, Crookers and many more. Downlink is not one to be pigeon-holed and is constantly on a quest to evolve and refine his sound. With this in mind, one thing will always remain constant – a pure unadulterated heavy listening experience…

KAP006 – L-Wiz – Straitjacket / 4.42 OZ – 12″ Vinyl
Kapsize kick starts 2011 with 2 fresh cuts from a new label artist: L-Wiz. While L-Wiz is new to Kapsize, the Swedish duo are in no way new to the dubstep scene – drawing attention with killer tracks like ‘Girl From Codeine City’ and the classic ‘Girlfriend’, the production pair have been making high quality dubstep tracks since the early 2004-5 days, even launching the first ever release on Dub Police! It is with pleasure that we announce ‘Straitjacket’ and ’4.42 Oz’ find a home on Kapsize! Keeping in the spirit of Joker’s own melodic productions, L-Wiz take a different angle from their previous output – pushing layer after layer of perfectly produced synth lines in harmonic syncracy. ‘Straitjacket’ is the more dancefloor focussed of the two cuts, with a sleazy, low-slung take on the ‘purple’ sound we all know and love at Kapsize – while keeping it heavily weighted to provide bass fans with plenty of satisfactory rumble! Flip for the equally melodic ’4.42 Oz’ which takes a more relaxed approach in vibe, taking things in a futuristic direction while simultaneously referencing the past. Beautifully produced elegant music that you will keep coming back to. DJ support from everyone from Plastician to 2562 as well as of course being a main staple in Joker’s own sets last year.

SPEAKS004 – Emvee / Graphics – Future Runnings EP – 12″ Vinyl
The power of youth is being felt all around the world right now, as dictators fall and governments wobble in the face of youngsters fighting against apparently dark futures. Here, Shifting Peaks harnesses some of that energy for a split 12” double header from two of the most promising young producers around. We’d like to think 18 year old South Londoner Alfie Macgibbon aka Graphics has been out there sticking it to The Man whilst jumping around to POW! and keeping the Old Bill on their toes. But we don’t hear much from him tbh, and from the depth and quality of these two future-steppers,’ Blue Top’ and ‘Brian Said to Me’, we reckon he’s been hidden away, quietly building his own vision of the future while real life goes on elsewhere. Birminghams’ Emvee’s is of an age where he doesn’t need to worry about the Tory Millionaire clubs further education plans, having established himself way back in the heady days of 2009 with his landmark ‘Glitch Dub’ on NMBRS. Now he unleashes a tropical banger in the shape of the percussive floor shaker ‘Windrush’ and a driving, Funky-tech bumper ‘Strength’. Two young producers, 4 tracks, a world to win. Keep the fires burning brother and sisters.

HRMN014 – Pavan – Holy Volt – 12″ Vinyl
You’re about to experience the first long-playing album of Pavan, the originator of Skweee-music. Skweee, also known as the synthetic Scandinavian funk, is a worldwide phenomena hailing originally from the frosty alleys of Stockholm and Helsinki. The raw, unpolished electronic funk tracks of this album were recorded in 2003-2006, when the term itself didn’t yet exist. Now, half a decade later, these rough diamonds finally see the light of day. This magnificient album is sprinkled with analogue  synthesizer magic, extraordinaire soundscapes and body rockin’ grooves tight as spandex. But don’t listen to us, judge for yourself. Take a trip through the electro ragga of  ‘War’ and ‘Buttons’ and simmer down with the trippy krautness of ’1000 Years’. In this world overpopulated by soulless throwaway electronic music it’s very rare and touching to hear something as pure and honest as ‘Holy Volt’.

CIV017 – Reso – Valken EP / War Machine – 12″ Vinyl
Forever spawning the next generation of bass mutations, Civil Music’s Reso brings an unsurpassed low-end density and textured sound that decidedly makes genres redundant. Wobble, hypercrunk, glitch, hip hop, dubstep, industrial and D&B all blend together for a concoction that only Reso can create, and one that consistently redefines the electronic sphere. In-between working with Hospital Records (with Slap Chop) and remixing the likes of Drop The Lime, Foamo, Qemists and dEbruit (among others), with ‘War Machine / Valkan’ Reso is setting the precedence for 2011, giving the bass world a fierce blueprint to follow. Make no mistake: ‘War Machine / Valkan’ is not a record for the faint-hearted. It’s certainly not suitable background music, and probably should come equipped with an explicit NSFW label. It will, however, be a record for discerning listeners who appreciate the subtleties and complexities that go into high-tech productions that carry this much conceptual and compositional weight, as is always the case with London’s chameleonic and many-masked mastermind. This is the sound of the end of the world, of machines breaking and technology folding, when all that’s left is carnal rage and chaos. A forceful onslaught of sound, the four tracks on Reso’s ‘War Machine / Valkan’ EP intricately mesh high amp leads and emphatic beats that entrance any dancefloor into riotous frenzy. Brutal rhythms command and frequencies drop as ‘War Machine’ kicks things off: a most fitting title for the ominous sounds of all hell breaking loose, where nothing – and no one – will remain in one piece. The rugged sonic explosion is carefully measured, as tearing beats fly recklessly like vicious shrapnel slamming against tough, concrete bass walls. ‘Expansion Ratio’ teases with elements of a break from the chaos, and then slams back down with bumping melodies and hyperactive leads. ‘Syndicate’ takes a page out of the tech end of the D&B book, but with drum patterns that change so unexpectedly, heads will be thrown into another bass dimension. A mastery of rhythm and warm synth-laden fills, the EP does tease with a wash of hope, with his expansive ‘Aethra’ conjuring the peaceful feeling of the early atmospheric tracks of Photek and Bukem. Yet a calm shuddering bassline serves as a foreboding reminder of where the EP has just come from, and that perhaps the peace may not last long. We’ll just have to wait and see what lies await in Reso’s next project: his debut album due later in 2011 on Civil Music.

New D&B Releases

RECIPE011 – Sato – Detroit Lies Bleeding / Seeker – 12″ Vinyl
Sato debuted on Ingredients and this is now his 3rd single. “Detroit lies bleeding” is a deep roller, perfect in the mix and a wicked groove. “Seeker” is more of a rave out, wicked piano on the intro before the bass rumbles and the drums roll. Perfect dj material and that forgotten art within drum & bass – some dancefloor energy! Dj Support London Elektricity, Die, Break, Futurebound, Presha.

CRIT050 – Cyantific – 305 / Opium – 12″ Vinyl
Critical Music reaches the big 50! A fantastic feat for any independent label in today’s climate but particularly one which has never been afraid to step outside the box and experiment with its output whilst always retaining the utmost integrity. Thanks to superlative A&R’ing skills by label boss Kasra and his genuine love of the music, the Critical brand now commands respect all over the world and with this 50th release it’s easy to see why. Long time friend of the label Cyantific takes the honours here with an absolutely blazing gem in the form of ‘305’ b/w ‘Opium’. Listener, believe and beware – the nastiness comes in full force! Do not be misled by the intro’s delicate vocals amid tranquil oceanic waves; ‘305’ exercises a fierce and fiery energy that pays testament to the versatility of artist and label alike. High synths elevate and peak into a brutal morphing, winding bass, laced with appropriately vicious snares. Definitively dangerous and beautiful at the same time, ‘305’ is one to pollute the dance floor – an electronic euphoria that’s just downright dirty. ‘Opium’ brings a techno-infused mischief to the table, where crisp drums meet a charismatic, undulating bassline. A perky stepper, ‘Opium’s chirpy synths are wholly violated by its fluctuating bass. Layered over the squelching b-line lie glitchy vocal samples, enough to trip up the electronic bleeps that drip throughout, giving this track some seriously sweet ‘n’ sour bite. An awesome ending to a fantastic release. To mark this 50th release look out for free celebratory Critical mix CD’s and other goodies in all good record stores and online retailers. DJ support from Friction, Hype, Danny Byrd, Logistics, Nu Tone, London Elektricity, Kasra, Total Science and more.

RECIPE013 – Skeptical – Sphere / Dream Police – 12″ Vinyl
Skeptical returns once again with his trademark dub influenced drum & bass. “Sphere” is just deep down low, with sparse drums and a killer bassline. This is everything that is good about Underground Drum & Bass. While “Dream Police” is some half time duttyness! Fans of Breakage should check this 12”, another killer release from DnB’s best kept secret. Support from D-Bridge, Jubei, Genotype, Ant TC1, Doc Scott, Fierce, Storm, London Elektricity, Blu Mar Ten, Survival, Break. Worth checking Skeptical’s “Eggs Florentine” recipe too.

SSS022 – Bad Robot – Black Whip – 12″ Vinyl
BaD RoBoT is the collective unit of Phetsta and Rregula, two cyborgs who have traveled back in time from 1980′s to the present day. So far they have released on BSE’s huge Endangered Species LP, Habit Recordings and Technique, with forthcoming material on Incite & Renegade .Their basslines are rough like metal….and they are both, in fact, made of metal. Their melodies are so beautiful they can make a robot understand why it is that Edward Furlong cries. Look out for the robots, they have lasers for eyes….the kind that hurt when you look at them for too long.

FRJ008 – Geiom – Resi Claart – 12″ Vinyl
We’re proud to announce Geiom’s full debut for Frijsfo Beats, His 12-inch is doubly exciting in that it makes a new departure into the tempo and rhythms of ‘half-step’ drum ‘n’ bass. The tracks have already earned support from ASC (Autonomic), DJ Alley Cat, Boxcutter, Autechre and West Norwood For this latest material, the closest reference point is drum & bass’s thriving half-step sub-genre. ‘Resi Claart’ unfolds with a similar steely, Terminator-like persistence, although instead of militantly in thrall to the grid, it’s gracefully executed. In certain ways the vibe is closer to nineties ambient jungle, although it couldn’t be mistaken for a product of either scene – fleshed out as it is with Geiom’s distinctive harmonies in brown, dystopian mode. B-side ‘Stel Dum’ is subtly woven around live drum and Moog tracks, pivoting on a skeleton of robotic calypso percussion as the title half suggests. Gradually the framework is stuffed with digitised silk and spice textures, building up a palette as lush as that of Island Noise and making for just as absorbing a listen. It might have been simple to capitalise on the existing reputation of Geiom’s music in other styles, but we think it’s more than worthwhile to bring listeners this new stage of his evolution. We hope you’ll agree.

b Geiom – Stel Dum

EXIT026 – Various Artists – Exit Records Presents ‘Mosiac Vol 1’ Sampler 2 – 10″ Vinyl
Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 2. With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles. As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. Well known producers such as Skream, Instra:mental, Scuba and Commix rub shoulders with some inspiring new talents such as Indigo, Synkro, Mode and Code 3. The theme of the album is quality timeless music, whether it be a dance floor killer such as Systems ‘Observation Point’ or Loxy and Resounds ‘Vertigo’ through to the tangerine dreamlike sounds of Croms Invisible Cities’ or Stray’s ‘Pushed’, this album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today. Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

CRIT051 – Rockwell – Aria EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Super limited white label hand stamped promo. Rockwell’s rise to prominence as a rare, distinctive talent has been exciting the electronica music circuit the world over. Critical, thankfully, being the trusty forefront for all things audio-aesthetically delicious, presents the ‘Aria EP’ – 4 tracks of sound sublime, exemplifying Rockwell’s refreshing angle on energy in the club combined with the characteristic, meticulously playful technicals, precise and thrilling as ever. The charmingly rustic intro of ‘Aria’ unleashes striking Flinstones-esque wooden triplets, scaling the track as stirring vocals weave through; haunting and uplifting at once, the title-track exudes sheer class. Slightly more buoyant, ‘Live For The Moment’ infuses an energetic tempo with profusions of ear-carressing funk and those ever-characteristic percussive twists – naughty all over. Swiftly plunged into apocalyptic darkness, the Ulterior Motive boys take a sinister liking to ‘Noir’. Distinctly menacing and genuinely frightening, what better to bully the atmosphere than Hell-raising bass and staccato violins. Listen out for the breakdown bass – horrific and enriching, this track is dark by Devil’s definition. Icing on the cake collaboration with underground legend Untold comes in the form of ‘Rehoku Sunrise’, a tribal earthy worldly masterpiece of running drums and raw, wild samples, glazing the soul in bliss. Bellissimo.

VOOMUSIC004 – Raiden – Forbidden Fruit / Bogotá – 12″ Vinyl
Perhaps the most daring of the Voodoo catalogue so far, Raiden returns for his second solo outing with two numbers that truly explore the percussion concussion of Voodoo Music. Forbidden Fruit To paint a picture of this track it would be fair to say Raiden channeled the ghost of Les Baxter got him in the studio. The exoctica of Mr Baxter is married with Raidens bass work. Subtle but yet weighty and prominant enough for dancefloors. The track is the deep blue unknown- keys twinkle in the track like tropical fish speeding past coral.  Theres a famous description of how people took in Baxters music “Listeners  were able to stroll around some taboo emotions, view a pagan ceremony, go wild in the sun or conjure a demon, all without leaving home hi-fi comforts” The same can be said for Raidens ‘Forbidden Fruit’ – A journey through some very different landscapes. Bogotá. The tense cousin of the first track, Bogotá comes through weighty and uncomprimising in its approach. A sustained rhythm is driven by subbass that is capable of moving the plates underneath us, Raiden once again shows us a very different side to his production. Most of the percussion in the track was recorded live by Raiden himself, bought whilst on his tours of South America. The track was a labour of love that already has dancefloors in awe – Doc Scott recently publicly commented “Just wanna say – Raiden - Bogotá caused major ruptions @ A Bunch Of Cuts last week, big, original, fresh DNB!”.

BRK017 – Hem Ft. Terrible Shock / Hem – On a Mission (Shortstuff Remix) / Rich Chroma / Plastic Lily – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo. For this tune Hem and Terrible Shock take apart an 80’s soul LP, add some sci-fi synths, lazy drums and a sprinkling of analogue FX. After many painstaking hours of recording the duo take a well earned coffee break, then return to the studio just in time to see the back of the light-footed Blunted Robots man Shortstuff as he runs off chuckling ‘your vocals are mine now!’ Revenge plans are made, vehicles are fuelled up in preparation – but these activities are cut short by the arrival of an email from the culprit – it seems that he took the files back to his HQ for what he describes as a ‘refix’ – with the engines still running, Hem and Shox check out the file and find it to be a work of genius – what they hear is an accelerated kaleidoscopic fusion of on-beat claps and snares in a peak-time northern soul style, super heavy subbass hits and hectic syncopated keyboard chops. The easy tempo and flow of the original have been transformed into a dancefloor classic, no doubt about it. Hem and Shox call off the troops and head back to the studio – calls are made, contracts drawn up and everything gets sent off to Transition for the magical transfer to vinyl. For the flipside the duo select 2 fresh beats from the archives featuring all the trademark Hem elements – flexible riddims, slinky edits, fat synths, warm bass tones, hip-house references… The refix of ‘On a Mission’ featured on Onemans’ much-loved Rinse 11 mix CD. The 12” has already been reviewed in publications such as IDJ and Mixmag – they described it as ‘psychedelic new jack swing’, and its currently being played by the likes of Subswara crew NYC (Soul Motive), Brackles (RinseFM), Mark Pritchard (Warp), Martin Kemp (Blunted Robots), Toddla T (Ninja Tune), Shortstuff (Ramp), Spamchop (Wigflex), Oneman (RinseFM), Geiom (Berkane Sol)

Walsh say’s his style is very energetic and his sets full of uptempo tracks, “I’m really into the more techy, futuristic side of the sound. HENCH022 – Mensah – Digital Dreamer – 12″ Vinyl
Mensah’s debut release on the HENCH imprint, Pulse 80’s, turned heads with its stylish production and out-of-the-box approach. His follow-up release, ‘Untitled Future Funk EP’, was all the talk on the blogs and his remix of Baby D’s ‘Let me be your Fantasy’ has been hailed as one of the hallmark dubstep tracks of 2010. With each new release Mensah’s studio skills and fresh thinking stand out ever clearer. This latest offering will be no disappointment… A. DIGITAL DREAMER A dreamy synth-line commences ‘Digital Dreamer’, which immediately sets the scene for one of Mensah’s more ethereal productions. The harmonic lead-line builds into an other-worldly riff before releasing that tripped-out, bouncing bass rhythm. Synths let loose overhead, twisting and turning the track into the funky number that it is. Once again, something different from the man like Mensah… AA1. KASHMIR (W/NOAH D) Teaming up with US producer, Noah D, the duo creates an echoey and foreboding backdrop to ‘Kashmir’. The mystic vibe quickly graduates with a captivating bassline, weaving its way through the frequencies. Kashmir has achieved that perfect balance between being musicallyintriguing and packing punch for the dancefloor. AA2. BIG UP THE GOONS A familiar arpeggio gently makes way for a gully-goon vocal. You’re then met with a shuddering bassline that goes a long way to create a haunting yet driven soundtrack. Forwardmoving and weighty, the mid-section provides a brief pause for reflection before reverting back to fully-flexed low-end funk.

New Dubstep / Funky / Techno Promos

The mixture of soothing musical elements and a lashing amen bring back memories of days gone by when there were no rules and there were no limits. An interesting insight into how dubstep could be taking dance music full circle.

PIPS014 – Orphan101 – Propa / Disemble – 12″ Vinyl
Apple Pips is proud to present another original new talent from the Bristol bass underground – Orphan101. Having cut his teeth on Bristol pirate radio with Headhunter aka Addison Groove, Orphan101 surfaced earlier this year with some promising releases on Saigon and his own Decarhythm label, one of several new labels in Bristol (along with If Symptoms Persist, Idle Hands, & Subdepth) to be pushing a varied and seemingly boundary less take on bass music. A residency at the Apple Pips nights in Bristol allowed him to road test his beats and it’s here that Appleblim heard the awesome rolling 2-step-meets-Carl Craig-in-a-Bristol-soundclash track that is ‘Propa’. With skippy garage beats, a bleeped out intro, and the deepest sub-bass this side of the Clifton Suspension Bridge, you need to hear this track on a system. It hurts! On the flip ‘Disemble’ takes us on a journey through his vision of minimal techno, in a dubstep context, with scratchy percussion rubbing up against twisted Ed & Optical ‘Wormhole’ era bass spasms. Having just come from playing at Fabric for Apple Pips takeover, things are looking great in 2011 for Orphan101. Early DJ/Radio support already coming from Mark Pritchard (Warp/Harmonic 313/Afrika Hi Tech), Instra:mental (Non-plus/Swamp81), Addison Groove, 2562 (Tectonic), Laurent Garnier, Angel Molina (Tresor) & more

DVA007 – GuGu / Scratcha DVA – The Afro Cuban EP – 12″ Vinyl
The seventh release on DVA records comes from a young, unknown resident of Manchester named GuGu. Staying true to the DVA style, his two tracks are fine examples of todays hybrid Funky House scene, maintaing the 4 to the floor drum patterns whilst drawing on a wide range influences… and as it suggests in the EP’s title, is packed full of Cuban flava. Straight up music designed to make people dance. It wouldn’t be right to get a DVA release without a feature from the man himself, Rinse Fm’s Grimey Breakfast show host Mr Scratcha DVA. As a slight deviation from the norm – and in a way a return to the styles his earlier production – DVA lays down a heavyweight slice of synth laden half step, defiantely one to pull your dirty face too. Check it out and get back to us with your thoughts.

DOT003 – Duffstep – Getting To Sirius Remix EP #1 – 12″ Vinyl
Like the joining of ancient clans or the marriage of Marie Antoinette to Louis of France the joining of the Duff brothers is something of a historical milestone. Since birth the Duff’s have gone their separate ways, one getting down on the worlds hipper dancefloors, hips-awiggling, head thrown back in rapture and all under a spinning disco ball. The other brother the troubled teen, hood up, eyes down, bass rumbling, one time selecta. Imagine then two estranged brothers, born from the same seed living awkwardly side by side, never entirely comfortable in each other’s company finally uniting on one massive inbred slab of sonic harmony. If you can imagine that slightly cack-handed analogy then that is pretty much what you get here. After a year of huge edits and original material Duff Disco has finally gone and had a fiddle with his brother? Both taken from the forthcoming Duffstep album ‘Getting To Sirius’, ‘Your Touch’ and ‘Backseat’ are original Duffstep tracks given a cosmic make over by Duff Disco. They are proper modern disco music that sits just the right side of funky, without conjuring images of fluffy boots and spiky hair, white shirts and fake tan. Whilst Backseat is the more euphoric of the two Your Touch is more moody than an emo teenager watching Twighlight. Both obviously Duff Disco but somehow keeping the family together as Duffstep’s finger prints are all over these too.

The structure is trademark TSD: a beautifully drawn-out breakdown compliments the progressively building tension, leading to a thunderous climax toward the end. This tune is more of a journey than simply a DJ tool (although it’s a treat to mix with), and DJs such as Bunzer0, Djunya, 501 and Claw have used it to devastating effect in the mix. For variations on the Open Your Eyes theme, Finnish mercenary 501 was brought in and produces a devastating, sinister, half-stepping remix monster. This version utterly destroys the dancefloor in usual 501 fashion, but adds a twist of darkness. HLZ, whose work for Drum and Bass labels Chronic, Soul:R and Liquid V Recordings has brought him much acclaim, was recruited to offer up his own unique take on Dubstep for a second variation on the original. He uses signature bassline science combined with smacking, dancefloor-friendly drums, then tosses in an epic breakdown-buildup combination followed by a monumental drop that’s sure to get the dance jumping. Variety truly is the spice of life, and Paradise Lost Recordings once again seeks to bring that point home with the Open Your Eyes EP.

APHA004 – Fracture And Neptune – The Limit / Get Lost – 12″ Vinyl
Good evening Planet Earth… Citizens of Earth origin or any other planet in the Solar System…Fracture & Neptune are proud to present the fourth installment of their galactic phonographic recordings imprint: The Limit/Get Lost. This latest release continues the Astrophonica journey and futher defines the label’s signature sound, somewhere between a funk band lost in space and a warehouse rave in East London. This release is set to be the label’s biggest yet with it getting support from pretty much every trend setting DJ out there including DJ Storm, DJ Bailey, DJ Teebee, Ulterior Motive, Doc Scott, Fabio and many, many more. The Limit was featured on Zero T’s Fabric Live 52 and caused a stir instantly with it’s simple and dancefloor devastating vibes, so devastating in fact that it has been heralded as ‘the tune of sun & bass 2010′ by Jubei from Metalheadz…. Astrophonica has now been placed firmly on the d&b map. A-Side - The Limit dispatches us on a time-travelling mission, a return to the planet of dark warehouses, where the atmosphere is made up of dense angsty drum-driven paranoia and raging bass-bin winds that are strong enough to take your skin clean off. Currently featuring on Fabric Live 52 by Zero T, The Limit is set to be the biggest release on the label to date, and is sure to grace many an emergency escape pod this Autumn. AA-Side - Get Lost sees an unsuspecting funk drummer trapped in tractor beam bleeps, almost escaping with the help of a snare-gun, before being sent hurtling back into the reverbisphere in classic style, as oncoming lazer-bass stabs of Death Star proportions seal the track’s fate, hauling it into the brocking bay. One for the sample and break spotters, Get Lost promises a deeper voyage to inner space than its vinyl cohabitant, making APHA004 rewarding bounty for any jet-setting bass hunter. Jubei (Metalheadz) “This was THE tune of Sun & Bass 2010″ John B (Beta) “the limit is an absolute beast.” Artificial Intellegence (Integral / V Recordings) “I love The Limit. Play it in every set. Always goes down well”

EXIT025 – Various Artists – Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1 – 12″ Vinyl
Exit Records Presents ‘Mosaic Vol 1’ Sampler 1. With so much good music arriving in the Exit inbox it was decided that a various artist project was needed to ensure that it all sees the light of day and doesn’t get caught up in a never ending schedule of singles. As normal with Exit Records, there’s no prejudice in the track selection. This album truly represents the more experimental side of Drum and Bass as opposed to the crash bang wollop which seems to be the only side of Drum and Bass portrayed by the mainstream media today. Hopefully this album will manage to reach the people that thought this forward thinking music was left behind in the nineties and let them know that it’s still alive and well and still capable of throwing up some surprising and unpredictable results.

Silent Killer returns following the success last year’s ‘EVERYONE BLEEDS’, and this time he’s brought co-producer Breaker along and a star studded list of collaborators on ‘AMONGST VILLAINS’. Everyone who is currently making waves in the world of hard drum n bass makes a contribution, yet the album is surprisingly diverse, melodic, and memorable. These selected DnB tracks from the ‘Amongst Villains’ album feature a who’s who of modern hard style drum n bass, and also illustrate the Ohm Resistance penchant for live instrumentation, including Pendulum’s KJ Sawka, as well as Counterstrike, Cooh, and DJ Hidden. Silent Killer and Breaker shine through with tightly crafted tracks with epic layered synths and Brooklyn style brutal bass bombs and body impact reeses. No recycled bullshit, no filler, excelling on both the dancefloor and in terms of creative construction and concept.

FRJ008 – Geiom – Resi Claart – 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy promo.

‘Swarf Pot’ (Transition Dubstep) Featuring 21 tracks from the likes of Benga, Skream, Coki, LD & Distance. Including 3 brand new exclusive tracks: Transition. It’s a word that takes you from one place to another. It’s also a small studio round the back of an unassuming building in South London. More specifically, it’s the working HQ of Jason Goz, the man who helped shape the dubstep sound with his Neumann cutting lathe – and his higher level ears, if course – and it is the first port of call for a whole roll-call of artists from original nuttahs like, Mala, Coki, Loefah, Burial, Kode 9, Skream and Benga to the international artists who only want their shit cut at Transition, as well as a heady brew of musicians including everyone from Jah Shaka to funky man of the moment DJ Paleface to avant garde ambient don Christian Fennesz. Basically, Jason is sound, in both senses of the word. The labels are going strong which is why we have compiled these CDs of past and future releases.

SUBWAYCD001 – Various Artists – Destination CD – CD
Subway Recordings has been a steady force within the dubstep scene the last 3 years.. Not only as a label but also as one of the most forward thinking party crews on the Dutch scene… Some of the leading Dubstep names have passed through Subway first before becoming the new rockstars of today… By flexing its sides from deep to hardcore they have been showing how far the word dubstep bends into multiple angles.. After releasing quality tunes like “Missed Calls”, “Unknown Suspect” & especially last year’s hotly tipped “Seeeriousss” its certain that this label knows quality when they hear it… And this Destination Compilation has the word quality written alllll over it.. Ranging from Mutant Funky/Dubstep to Garage combined with some of the grittiest & darkest sounds Dubstep has to offer… Subway once again shows what Dubstep is all about… Not clinging to styles or focusing on sub genres.. this compilation is all about “Dubstep” in every sense of the word…

RNG008 – Jonnny Clark Vs Mala / Coki – Sinners / Goblin – 12″ Vinyl
Finally re pressed and re-released. Ringo Records, the outward spew of the legendary Transition Studios, snug in the heart of dubstep territory, confound the unsuspecting public with more heavyweight material from the scene’s core artists. Mala re-rubs a Johnny Clarke classic with typical panache; reverential dub-wise handling invested with bass technology and infused with Rasta teachings. Fellow Digital Mystik Coki provides a coarse counterpoint with ‘Goblin’, a ‘Spongebob part 2′, with ferocious synth action that few, if any, can better.

EX7005 – Excision & Downlink – Heavy Artillery ft. Messinian / Reploid – 12″ Vinyl
Without doubt Excision and his Rottun Recordings label have been one of the dubstep success stories of the last few years. From humble beginnings in British Columbia, Canada, to a worldwide fanbase comprised of thousands upon thousands of fans. Anyone who witnessed Excision destroy dancefloors in Paris, London, Bristol, Manchester and a host of other European cities on his recent tour will understand the effect his music is having around the world. EX7 is Rottun’s sister label, and was home to one of Excision’s most recognisable hits yet, the infamous ‘Swagga’ (produced alongside Datsik). Here Excision teams up with another member of the Rottun camp to create two incredible pieces of filthy dubstep. ‘Heavy Artillery’ features Messinian, one of the USA’s most well known D&B and dubstep MCs. Taking the formula of using hip hop samples and turning it on its head with powerful original vocals that ignite the dance alongside some West Coast lead lines, this one is heavy on the hip! Flip over and the gruesome twosome team up once more on ‘Reploid’, a gurgling bassline-led track complete with grinding syncopated synths and pounding beats. Both tracks featured heavily in Excision’s sets during his recent EU/UK tour and will no doubt be flying off the shelves this winter.

SEPTIC1 – Shackleton – Man On A String Part 1 and 2 – 12″ Vinyl
Since writing the suicide note for Skull Disco in 2008, Shackleton has made a well received long player for Perlon and remixed the likes of Harmonia and Brian Eno, Moderat and To Rococo Rot as well as making a mix cd for the Fabric series and one of the final mixes for the Mary Anne Hobbes show on Radio One. This release however sees Shackleton once again with his own label which will go by the name of Woe To The Septic Heart! Those who have heard Shackleton before may know what to expect and will not be surprised to hear two bass-heavy, percussive tracks with a psychedelic edge and an involved narrative that will perhaps not be played out on every dancefloor. More’s the pity.

Fresh off his sold out New Zealand and Australian tours, where he has been smashing it up on three decks SkisM, brings you his highly anticipated debut EP on Never Say Die. Recent DJ support from dubstep stalwarts such as : Flux Pavillion, Bar 9, Bare Noize, Trolley Snatcha, Datsik and Excision, has cemented SKisM onto the scene as one of the freshest and hardest dubstep artists around. Sold out international gigs, plays on Mister Jam & Rusko’s BBC Radio 1 as well as Eddie Temple Morris XFM’s ‘The Remix’ further confirm this status. Rave Review SKisM’s ‘Tongue-Firmly-In-Cheek’ take on the Rave Revival that seems to be happening! This pokes fun at all the tunes that just sample old Hardcore and get ‘Rave Reviews’. RS1010 – Vondelpark – Sauna EP – 12″ Vinyl
R&S round off a fine year that has seen them release of string of amazing releases from some of the most talented young new artists to emerge from the underground, as well as singles from some serious techno heavyweights. Their final release of 2010 sees them introduce the debut single from new signings Vondelpark. Vondelpark make lofi pop music, combining guitars, vocals and programmed beats. Their music is evocative of hazy summer landscapes and informed by the melting pot of London’s underground music scene. This four track EP is the perfect introduction to their ghostly, laidback charm. Recorded in their bedrooms, this unpolished 4 track gem gives an indication of what this young band are capable of.

DISF010 – Truth – Stranger Than Fiction EP – 12″ Vinyl x 2
Fresh off the back of their debut ‘Puppets’ LP and a very successful European DJ tour, the trio from New Zealand drop another bomb, this time on Skream’s Disfigured Dubz label in the form of a four track EP ‘Stranger than fiction’. Staying true to their sound, they roll out four very different tracks but all with the same distinctive Truth vibes. ‘Wednesday’ is first off to warm up the speaker coils and set the mood with their trademark eerie atmospheres, gut rumbling basslines and quirky paranoia educing effects. Just when you thought there was no light at the end of the tunnel, they drop a glimmer of hope with the soul warming ‘Stay’ with its heart wrenching strings, calming Rhodes chords and reassuring vocals, it serves well as the lull before the storm. Up next the clouds blacken again and it’s deep into the jungle with ‘Bubba Ho Step’. Tribal drums beat in the distance like some kind of rain dance, and so the storm begins. Sub bass slowly morphs into a pounding, precision timed, chest shattering mid range that is dealt in just the right amounts, this tune will mash up any dance floor without any repetitive overkill. Then we move into the apocalyptic aftermath of ‘The Future’. Once again the paranoia sets in and we realize there really is no hope for mankind after all. A shuffling drum step and percussion, cinematic atmospheres and a simmering mid range crackle and fizz like burning embers amongst char grilled concrete ruins. Having been caned by all the main playas over the last year such as Skream, Mala, Hatcha, Joe Nice and N-Type to name a few, this is a must for your record box.

c Truth – Bubba Ho Step

NONPLUSLP002PART1 – LOL – LOL Part 1 – 12″ Vinyl
lol is a bit of an unusual project, it’s just a thing in it’s own right, it’s not ‘for’ anything or anyone in particular, it’s just an LP made by three bored people who like music that sounds like it did before the advent of the internet. The project was recorded in the bedroom of a warehouse conversion in Hackney Wick (bedrooms can be incredibly creative spaces, seeing as most of us were conceived in one) They wrote about self-obsession, social anxiety, drug abuse, and failed relationships using pre-21st century recording devices such as VHS tape, 70′s valve microphones, analogue synths, cheap Argos catalogue guitars, and 80′s drum machines. The resulting music was sent to a handful of people they thought were similarly musically inclined; people deeply into producer culture who never rabidly stuck to one way of doing things, in the hope that they might like it too. After a few positive responses, it was decided to keep the project close to where it was created and London based label Nonplus+ Records proudly put their name behind it. The name was chosen after a text conversation about potential band names – none of which sounded right – with the last suggestion being “Polterchrist?” which was replied to with a simple “lol”. lol sounded neat so that was it. They liked the fact that it used to be an abbreviation for ‘lots of love’ but now just means ‘laughing out loud’. It seemed to fit the cheap, cynical nature of what they’d written about… oh and it looks a bit like a person with their hands in the air.

SINS004 – LD – Ghost Story / Hard Skank – 12″ Vinyl
LD’s sound is his own. Drawing on his roots, you can hear the drum pan sounds of Jamaica resonating throughout, flashes of Soca drums, subtle tribal nuances, and the ghost of Jungle reverberating in the warm, pulsating sub bass. It seems now is the time for LD to make the transition from behind the scenes and into the limelight.

IDLE004 – Headhunter – Lost Prophet / Chasing Dragons – 12″ Vinyl
Whether throwing down techno-informed steppers for Tempa or creating juke-fuelled hysteria around crustaceans for Loefah’s Swamp81 imprint, Headhunter (and his Addison Groove alias) always brings a startling level of sophistication to his productions. These two cuts bear the same high standards while also revealing a little more about his sonic palette. ‘Lost Prophet’ surges forth on a rock solid four-to-the-floor propulsion, offset by snappy top end percussion before being swathed in haunting pads and dubby FX. ‘Chasing Dragons’ chimes in on an instantly upbeat tip, pummelling a soca rhythm against an undulating melody. Deep without being downbeat and immaculately crafted, IDLE004 adds ever more breadth to the legacies of Headhunter, Idle Hands and ultimately Bristol music.

18MOHM02 – Silent Killer & Breaker – Amongst Villains – 12″ Vinyl
Silent Killer returns following the success last year’s ‘EVERYONE BLEEDS’, and this time he’s brought co-producer Breaker along and a star studded list of collaborators on ‘AMONGST VILLAINS’. Everyone who is currently making waves in the world of hard drum n bass makes a contribution, yet the album is surprisingly diverse, melodic, and memorable. Showing off considerable production and songwriting skills, the duo drop their tempo with fantastic results, on this vinyl single of the dubstep tempo tracks from the ‘Amongst Villains’ album. Joining forces with both Napalm Death legend Mick Harris (as SCORN), and breakcore master Enduser, and utilizing the vocal talents of Bulgaria’s Syze, the tracks range from the brutal, total dancefloor domination of the title track Amongst Villains, to the epic and uplifting sounds of Divine. Silent Killer and Breaker prove to be versatile and no tourist, demonstrating a level of mastery that transcends genre.

DBOOT012 – Downliners Sekt – We Make Hits Not The Public – 12″ Vinyl
‘We make hits, not the public’ is the second episode of Downliners sekt’s trilogy with barcelonan bass music label Disboot Records in co-production with the band’s own label dsekt[dot]com. The deeply mysterious bass-tronauts continues their subsonic adventures, taking their craft to a new level of refinement. Haunting pads swell into lo-fi chopped melodies, crashing against persistent rhythms and coherent structures to create a near sonic shipwreck. Emotionally engaging and at calculated times claustrophobically dense, “wmhntp” is the middle ground between two extremes, one of excess and the other of minimal precision. This, their sixth official release, is the second installment of a trilogy started a few months ago with the critically acclaimed ‘Hello lonely, hold the nation’ EP which since its release in May 2010 has received wide spread support. From radio bass evangelists like Mary anne Hobbs and Rob Booth (both of them have commissioned exclusive mixes for their respective shows); to prestigious record stores like Sounds of the Universe and Boomkat (receiving category of single of the week on both places); having being reviewed by The Wire, Resident Advisor, Playground and many others magazines and webzines. The record has also received massive support from different artists around the world, among them The Bug (King Midas Sound), Kid Kameleon, François K and Hollywood movie director Darren Aronofsky.

Punch Drunk Records prepare “Worth The Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics” compilation

Punch Drunk Records prepare “Worth The Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics” compilation

Punch Drunk presents: V/A – ‘Worth the Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics’

“I knew straight away that this was a sound that would fit perfectly in Bristol – there is a lot of tension in the music that carries a satisfactory darkness with it, but it’s also lazy music. You don’t have to dance hard to move with it – it was born with a reefer in its gob!”

So said Pinch when I interviewed him in February 2005. Having witnessed the early DMZ and FWD>> raves that spawned this new sound we now refer to as Dubstep, and having gradually begun integrating it into the fabric of Bristol’s existing club scene, this young DJ’s instincts were proving correct. The following month I attended one of his Context nights – a dubsession by Loefah and Skream, on one of their earliest forays outside the Capital – and experienced for myself the sheer physical impact of dubstep at soundsystem volume. But even that was just a hint of what was to come. In April, Subloaded II sent a subsonic shockwave through the city, as Bristol shuddered under the weight of DMZ’s bass meditations. Those who survived the onslaught were changed forever, and Bristol’s destiny as dubstep’s second city became assured.

May 2005 saw the debut release on Pinch’s Tectonic imprint, which was the first of many new dubstep labels to emerge from the city. Being so much smaller than London, Bristol’s new generation of bedroom DJs and producers mingled freely in a close-knit community centred around the Rooted Records shop and the new club spaces (Dubloaded, Sub- loaded, Ruffnek Diskotek, Noir, HENCH) which sprang-up over the following months to cater for this rapidly expanding scene. Beats and ideas were eagerly exchanged on freshly-burned cd-rs in a period of unprecedented communal activity and cooperation, which would ultimately draw in and re-energise many of the city’s older generation of bass-explorers. Indeed, Bristol’s historical association with bass-orientated music was a crucial factor in the formation of a distinct and cohesive sound that triggered a feedback-loop of influence back to both London and the world beyond.

Almost inevitably, the Bristol micro-scene outgrew it’s grassroots, as producer-DJs like Headhunter, Appleblim, Joker, RSD, Pinch and Peverelist soon found themselves playing venues all over the planet. Once again, the ‘Bristol Sound’ had become an international phenomenon. Yet even today the core community still comes together for the regular mid- week Dubloaded sessions, which remain a testament to this city’s unshakable sense of strength and solidarity, as SGT. Pokes (the Honorary Bristolian who led the first charge at Subloaded all those years ago) calls the monthly congrega- tion to prayer.

- Gutterbreakz, November 2010.

Curated by Punch Drunk Records, Bristol’s premier bass music imprint, “Worth The Weight – Bristol Dubstep Classics” compiles five years of Bristol Dubstep history across two CD’s.

Coming soon – Truth “Puppets” LP [Aquatic Lab Records]

Coming soon – Truth “Puppets” LP [Aquatic Lab Records]

Posted 26 July 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 3 Comments

Forthcoming on Sept 6th Aquatic Lab is a debut LP from New Zealand based production unit Truth, entitled “Puppets”.

Since their debut appearance on Deep Medi Music, Truth has been hard at work on their LP and now it’s ready to drop. With the initial album sampler (LAB010 ‘Dead Silence’ & ‘Burglar’) laying the foundations, the second 12” LAB011 (forthcoming on 9th August) reinforces with ‘Juno’ & ‘Under Current’, two huge stepper grooves layered with more than enough weight for the shockout. The album itself ‘Puppets’ is a dense trip through moody big bass-driven soundscapes that include some of their finest work in the form of ‘The Fatman’, ‘Lab Rat’ and a VIP of the previously released ‘Terror Planet’. Also on the roster, Truth’s ‘Legion’, possibly their most sought-after riddim to date, which brings their trademark sound signatures of sweeping synths and massive amounts of bass fully into place. ‘Pup- pets’ touches on many styles such as the liquid offering of ‘Indigo Mood’, or the almost genre defying vocal lick ‘Don’t Explain’. ‘Puppets’ is a full bodied experience from start to finish – for darkly elegant dubstep it doesn’t get much better than this.

Truth

Truth have received DJ support around the globe from artists such as Mala, Skream, Joe Nice, Breakage, Hatcha and N Type, with their beats being dropped at shows from Club Love in New York City to DMZ in London, as well as featur- ing on radio stations BBC Radio One, Kiss and Rinse. Two comprehensive Europe tours and a string of gigs around Australia and Asia, have included an appearance at the legendary DMZ night in Brixton and the infamous Sub Dub in Leeds.

Truth’s big riddims have been quickly snatched up by a number of established labels such as seminal Deep Medi Musik and Skream’s Disfigured Dubs. Alix Perez has included his collaboration with Truth on his debut album ’1984′ and the group have remixed the likes of The Nextmen, Ms Dynamite and Silverclub.

New D&B CD

VTGCD001 Vintage – Utah Jazz Vintage Recordings CD
Two years since his mesmerising debut LP ‘It’s a Jazz Thing’ transported d&b dancefloors across the world back to the halcyon days of early-noughties liquid-funk bliss, the unabashed ambassador of vintage d&b is back doing exactly that: vintage d&b. The template is the same – lavish melodies, spring-fresh beats and unfathomably orginal soul samples – but this history lesson just grew some meaty balls: ‘NRG ’93’ channels the spirit of old-skool hardcore; ‘Skyward Bound’ threads classic Amen clatter and heavy low-end through sublime ’70s guitar loops; and the wrinkle-tastic Ragga Twins jet in to holler magificently over rollicking experimental stepper ‘Enter The Jungle’. Experimental steppers? Utah Jazz? Believe it – true to form, the renowned party-rocking DJ is quite happy bucking all preconceptions as well as ignoring musical trends, and the results are his best work yet.i DJ album review 9/10.

RDRCD001 Jungle Fever Vol. 1 – Murdock presents Radar Records CD
After more than 10 years in the scene and playing alongside all the greats, it was time for some natural progression. DJ Murdock launched his first official mix cd to critical and popular success in October ’09 and set the standard for what Radar Records will deliver in the future. Having worked closely with Netsky, who’s climbing the ranks of drum&bass like few have before him, it was an obvious choice to have two of his tracks for the first release on Radar. ‘Your Way’ is one of the most popular drum&bass tunes in Youtube history, with over 170000 views, and ‘Daydreaming’ is a taster for one of the next Radar releases, as a new version is promising to go global soon. ‘Daydreaming’ has already been played by London Electricity, Grooverider and Fabio. Both tracks were featured exclusively on Murdock’s ‘Jungle Fever Vol 1′ mix cd and are now available to all on 12″ vinyl and mp3 download. The first in a series of mix CDs: Jungle Fever is dead, long live Jungle Fever! 74 minutes of drum&bass, fidget and dubstep – 39 tracks, mixed by Murdock (Studio Brussel Belgium)

SUICIDE051 Damn Tough / Vibrations – Mindscape Commercial Suicide 12″ Vinyl
Evil funk of highest grade. Mindscape are dropping some serious vibes this year. Damn Tough is a exactly that! With its trademark Mindscape deep bassline and growling building the pressure with each bar. Vibrations is a trancey, chilling track almost liquid but heavy on the funk. Gergely Sasvári aka Mindscape, is one of the major producers hailing from the thriving Hungarian drum and bass scene, homeland of producers like Chris.SU, SKC, or Jade. He achieved his first success as a member of the electronic band ’Random Soundz’, performing live at several major events. In 2003 he founded the Mindscape trio, that a couple of years later became his solo project. 2010 looks even brighter for Mindscape, Collaboration EP on Subtitles, and also looking at a single 12” at the classic Virus Recordings. While working on his 2nd album, he has also found time for other projects, such as collabs with Gridlok, Chris.SU and Jade. SUBTLE013 Tensions – Sub Subtle Audio 12″ Vinyl
Subtle Audio makes it’s return to the vinyl fold with this brand new 3 tracker by Austria’s Sub. Living at high altitude in his native land, it comes as no surprise that these tracks exude an icy sound. “Tensions” is a beautifully delicate piece of D&B. Sharp snares, hi-hats and drifting atmospheres are underpinned by a sub-zero bass sound. Suddenly the beats thicken and become twisted and glitchy. It’s almost as if a frozen lake you were standing on is beginning to crack and give way! “Halleluja” is on the half-speed tip and will not even sound like D&B to most. Choir voices are interrupted by a stepping beat and a shuddering, dirty bassline, offset by a world of icey atmospherics, echoes and feedback. This sound is truly from another planet. “Hydra” is something a little different for Subtle Audio – clocking in at 120bpm but it certainly doesn’t sound like house or techno! It’s a nicely mellow track with a lurching, jerky beat that is filtered and reversed but always rhythmical. Dark Rhodes keys and then a bright piano line ensure a nice variance of mood in this beautifully balanced piece.

HUMA8030 Hardcore Will Never Die / Systems Activated – Zardonic Human Imprint 12″ Vinyl
Zardonic join’s forces with Counterstrike & Mumblz. Zardonic’s brand of Drum & Bass has four main elements: the Melodic element (as there’s nothing I hate the most than these stupid dark tracks that have no melody on them and it’s all about noise and no key notes), the Latin element (coming from Venezuela, savage grooves just have to be there), the Industrial element (yup, I like noise, with melody, but always a reason behind my tracks sounding so overcrowded), and obviously the Metal element, since I’m stuck using minor thirds, fourths, fifths, diminished fifths, or ninths, and a lot of amp simulators to add that organic tone in my reeces and leads. That pretty much sums it up. Melody. Latin. Industrial. Metal.

TRNSL006 Denile / A Chain Of Red – Grimm & Nusense / Resound Translation Records 12″ Vinyl
Translation Recordings is proud to unveil the first pairing of tunes from debut LP/compilation “Without Borders.” Rinsed by DJs to include Grooverider, Anile, Sinistarr, and Stunna, “Denile” is a collaboration between Canada-based artists Grimm & Nusense. The duo deliver a stripped-back and cavernous steppa, with deep low-end rumble, acid squelches, and reverberated dubstyle chords. The flip welcomes the return of Translation veteran and Finnish dnb all-star Resound in the futuristic sounds of “A Chain of Red,” where floating synth pads weave through a crunchy, 8-bit tone sequence. Spliced drum edits at the drop quickly change the uplifting opening vibe into a more sinister and moody one that is charged by an electrified synth bass wall. Meanwhile, a combination of congas, snares, and hi-hats punch in and out of the mix to give this monster of a tune its staccato percussive core. These dancefloororiented tracks represent only a small sliver of the spectrum and vibe covered by the “Without Borders” LP/compilation, which will be available in the coming weeks on CD & digital download featuring exclusives from Solar Empire, ASC, Mindmapper, DBR (UK), Marginal, Dub Phizix, Edward Oberon, Stranjah, Theory, Slider, and Expose. Keep it locked!

DSM016 Glass Of Greed – June Miller & Anile Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
Two of the most talked about producers of recent times, June Miller & Anile, join forces to devastating effect for DSM016, and together they have crafted the darkest release to grace Deep Soul Music so far. This is the first of many tunes from these two as they have developed a close working relationship with their complimentary sounds and styles and they will be gracing DSM with plenty more of their music in the future.
Whilst many have tried to jump on the ‘minimal’ bandwagon and to imitate others styles, ‘Glass of Greed’ is the perfect demonstration of how stripped back, half-step d&b should be done. A pounding kick drum, a deep snarling bass line and sinister vocal snippet all combine to create an aggressive, moody atmosphere similar to that of old Renegade Hardware tracks but with a new twist for 2010. This has been causing carnage on dancefloors the world over, and if Satan himself listened to drum & bass, he would listen to this….
‘Induction’ sees Anile go it alone, and the man himself has even said this is one of his personal favourites of the tracks he has produced. Stripped back to very fundamentals of the genre, you can hear elements of his trademark half-step sound but with the rolling drums and big bass, this is one of Anile’s more dancefloor orientated efforts and judging by the reaction from dj’s and ravers alike, he has got the formula just right.

LFTDUB001 Knock You Down (Eskmo Remix) – Spor / Apex Lifted Music 12″ Vinyl
Imagine combining Lifted Music with 3 of the Dubstep scenes biggest, most progressive artists. Now, throw in the fact that two of Lifted Music’s most recognised back catalogue anthems have been remixed by these said artists. Then, let your mouth water at the idea of a 12” consisting of Spor ‘Knock You Down’ (Eskmo Remix) and Apex ‘Nowhere to Run’ (Datsik & Excision Remix). Go on, we’ll let you dribble for a moment… Scheduled for full release on 31st May 2010, Lifted Music presents their debut release within the Dubstep genre, and judging by the enormous feedback, things look sharp. Featuring heavily on rotation in both scenes, including BBC Radio 1 airplay in mixes, LFTDSTEP001 has raised the level of Lifted Music’s output once again. Crossing the boundaries between the two scenes is often an eyebrow-raising moment, but having drafted in Dubstep’s finest exports, confidence is at an allround high. Eskmo’s grudging approach to the seminal debut release from Spor on LFTD001 with ‘Knock You Down’ is a testament to progression at its finest. Around 4 years old, Eskmo has breathed life into an already exhilarating classic. Fortunately, it doesn’t stop there. Aggro ‘140’ maestros Datsik & Excision go hard on ‘Nowhere To Run’, the original from Lifted Music specialist Apex on his LFTD004 ‘Wall of Sound’ EP. Transforming and growling between bars, this industrial remix was recently featured in Excisions recent BBC Radio 1 Mix.

PTN002 More Than Ever EP – Hackman PTN 12″ Vinyl
Briskly traveling from Swansea to Leeds, PTN follows Doc Daneeka’s release with an equally hyped EP of fresh material from Hackman, who along with Doc D, featured in FACT Magazine’s top 10 producers to watch for the year. Hackman is one of the exploding Funky movement’s best and brightest producers, rising fast and unleashing unstoppable rhythm after unstoppable rhythm. Profiled by the venerable and influential Blackdown in 2009 Hackman is no stranger to hype even so early in his career. But it’s not all just hype, and if anything, the hyperbole is warranted. Hackman makes music in line with other prominent Funky producers, but his productions have a certain sheen and a peculiarly humid quality that make them unmistakable. His impressive grasp of bass (see the absolutely crushing basslines in “Bodies” and “Surround” off of his EP for Well Rounded, betrays his initial foray into dubstep, and it lends his music a power both more nuanced and more visceral than many of his contemporaries.

MEDI027 Tenopause / Discreet Dub – Calibre Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Calibre flexes his dubstep muscles, here making his second outing on Mala’s Deep Medi imprint – the first was a subtle rolling garage-like affair that had all the hallmarks of Calibre’s drum & bass sound as well as Deep Medi’s deepness. The highlight here has to be ‘Tenopause,’ where Calibre’s knack for subtle rolling percussive bliss is in full effect. The hi-hats draw you in with their fluid forward motion and when they play off the kicks and that addictive bass line pulses with hypnotic energy before flailing off into open space like it’s ricocheted off a passing space cruiser, you’re deep into eyes down zoned out, head nod, arm shake territory. ‘Discreet Dub’ is a more spaced out affair, slowing things down to a half step and upping the atmosphere as the bass seduces you into a state of bliss as it shifts amongst the eerie Middle Eastern melodies. BOKA028 Flex’d (Ikonika Remix) / Detroit Skank – DJ Madd Boka Records 12″ Vinyl
It’s a special one as Boka Records enlists the services of the current Queen of underground Electronic music IKONIKA for a postgarage relick of ‘Flex’d’ (the original was released on DJ Madd’s ‘Better With You EP’ – BOKA020). It was first showcased by Alleycat on her highly successful Kokeshi Podkast series and is currently garnering support from Mary Anne Hobbs (Radio 1) and Martyn (3024). It’s certainly a musical departure for the Boka camp but 2010 has been all about diversifying and showcasing all styles within the realms of bass music.
DJ Madd is on a heater right now with support for his music coming from all angles, and so the time is right to release argueably his biggest and most supported track ‘Detroit Skank’, first showcased on Skream‘s ‘Stella Sessions’ radio show on RinseFM and more recently by Gilles Peterson on Radio 1. It’s a beast of a roller which expertly incorporates dub and techno influences, the bassline on this one is absolutely sick, the likes of Headhunter, Skream, RSD and Akira Kiteshi have been utilising it in the raves to devastating effect.

CTFAT101 Too Many Times – Randomer Fat! Records 12″ Vinyl
The newly re-launched Fat! Records continue from where they left off with this forward thinking release from Randomer & Fife. Too Many Times sees Rhodes stabs and a super-slick vocal cut ride a bassline that, coupled with the high-energy percussion, builds to a deceptively furious peak before releasing a soaring synth-line that will no doubt strike a chord with fans of Sbtrkt and Joy Orbison. Slum City is an altogether tougher affair with its heavyweight percussion and bass bin punishing drop, yet it once again defies pigeonholing with its blissed-out breaks and vocoder. Futuristic banger!
Support from: Gilles Peterson – BBC Radio 1 – Mary Anne Hobbs – BBC Radio 1,Mistajam – BBC 1Xtra, Ras Kwame – BBC Radio 1 (Record Of The Week), Marco Del Horno – Rinse FM, Starkey – Sub FM, A-Trak – Ben UFO -Untold – Martelo Scratcha DVA – Greenmoney – Braiden – XXXY -Spam Chop – Warrior One – Mele – Tomb Crew – DJ Donna Summer – D Malice.

Gearing up for the release of his highly anticipated second full length ‘Midnight Colour’ on Planet Mu in June, Ital Tek drops two multicoloured cuts for the second single on his own Atom River label. The A side ‘Spectrum Falls’ is a cascade of arpeggios, steel drumlike melodies and cutting saw-tooth bass. The track is already featuring in DJ sets from the likes of Surgeon and Starkey and is set to appear on the Fabric53 album. ‘Giga’ on the flip is a long time staple and favourite of Ital Tek’s DJ sets. FC12035 Producer No.2 Remixes – dBridge Fat City 12″ Vinyl
From our Producer No.2 album we’ve selected dbridge’s slo-mo d’n’b production “ZX81” for two very special treatments. The remixes are from Shed & Ramadanman. Berlin’s Shed is a consumate producer & engineer of techno reknowned for his explorations into dub on labels like Ostgut, Hardwax & his own Soloaction. Here he works dbridges track into a stunning, brooding monster of a track driven by a gloriously filthy sub-bass and alleviated with an uplifting skeewed synth breakdown. The remix brings together elements of techno, dubstep, & d ‘n’ b in formiddable fashion. …An absolute killer! On the flip Ramadanman drops a typically accomplished piece, fusing styles to dramatic effect. After recent heavyweight releases on Hemlock & Aus he once again comes correct working a heavy block percussive rhythm wrapped around sublime bass drops and intensified by motorised keys for a true heads-down effect. Both tracks have been favoured and played by Martyn, Scuba, Peverlist, James Blake, Actress & Instra:mental. Not forgetting that we’ve had the vinyl mastered and cut at Dubplates and Mastering, so you know the spirit is in the groove.

HJRLP052   New Wave Dance Music From South Africa – Shangaan Electro    Honest Jons Records 12″ Vinyl x 2
An astounding compilation of the breakneck Shangaan dance output of the Nozinja studio in Soweto, recorded between 2006 and 2009. The traditional Shangaan music is fast. You play it slow, they won’t dance. music. Shangaan is fast. While others play at 110, we are at 180, 182, 183. And when you hear those marimba beats and that live guitar through the keyboard, you know it’s Shangaan. You hear those toms, then you know, this is Shangaan music. “You must be prepared to see the fastest dance ever,” Dog declares. The dances are wild, with films of them attracting more than half a million hits on You Tube. The tradition grows out of the Shangaan disco movement, a music that dominated in the ’80s with artists like Penny Penny and Peter Teanet. Shangaan disco ran at 110 BPM. Dog’s music is around 180 and it’s getting faster. Yet the lyrics seem to run counter to this rapidity. They read like African soap operas, tied up with domestic matters and a yearning for the slower life. This is country music. There’s something distinctive in this Shangaan perspective: they are one of the more rural and traditional groups in the wealthiest African nation, yet ‘tradition’ to them can also be living, electronic and nuanced. Just as Dog samples American phrases in his songs, his videos cut in shots of white joggers on a spring day, a foggy lakeshore somewhere like Wisconsin, even a corporate office space —mundane yet exotic images which become intriguing takes on the modern South African dream. Instead of African music becoming Americanized and re‐framed for the global market, Dog’s productions do the opposite. American phrases and foreign images become samples in his collage, in his traditional context. This album is the first release of its kind outside South Africa. Here is Dog’s music as‐is.

STEAK003 Riddim Team EP – Baobinga Steak House Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Following on from their own EP, the latest offering from Hanuman and Atki2’s Steak House imprint sees Baobinga, Poirier and a host of MCs join the Steak House Family. STEAK 003 sees the label moving into bashment territory with the original Bass Music badman Baobinga serving up three prime cuts of juicy vocal raggastep. Backed by a remix by Karnival king Poirier, this record is crammed full of party heat. Sam Baobinga has been one of the most important producers on the British Music Scene over the last five years. With releases on labels such as Soul Jazz, Ninja Tune and Positiva as well as his own Build imprint and remixes for artists like Guru, The Ragga Twins, and The Wu Tang Clan, Baobinga has consistently reinvented and reshaped his sound and stayed several steps ahead of the game. This release sees ‘Binga push his heavy ‘raggastep’ sound; bass heavy vocal bashment with a nod to the lush full synth sounds of future garage and featuring original voicings by some of the UK’s hottest MCs. FIRE!

MTR005 Borderline / Crackdown – Sinister Souls Mindtrick Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Second release for the young Dutch act Sinister Souls, following a debut on Excision’s Rottun. These two ‘Borderline’ tracks are of the slow-moving, heavy and scraping dubstep kind, and somewhat shows well how the whole dark d’n'b sensibilities can translate into this genre. As with Broken Note, Matta, The Eerier Child or a good part of the Rottun people, gone are most dub elements, replaced by grating distortion and dark undertones. It’s all pretty bassy and massive in here, and should work perfectly with headnodders.

CMPD007 Get Loose – Landslide Remix / Fracture & Qualifide 170bpm Remix – Compound One Compound Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Compound One started as a concept while they were at the pioneering Dubstep club night FWD. Fracture had been checking out the emerging Dubstep sound and Qualifide was then hosting a weekly show on Rinse FM and had begun to mix dubstep in with his usual garage style. The timing was right, the studio session was booked…’Get Loose’ was unleashed!
LANDSLIDE REMIX: What can be said about this remix? It’s next level! Landslide has done what only he can do and has managed to completely change the vibe of the track by taking it down a more bouncy, jazzy, garage route but at the same time keeping the low end and vibe of Get Loose in tact. Layers upon layers of Landslide’s trademark chords & sound FX, intricate programming & solid drums cause this classic remix send shivers down your spine!
FRACTURE & QUALIFIDE 170bpm REMIX: Compound One revert to their original aliases and totally flip the script with a back to the roots deep Drum and Bass remix as a salute to their heritage. With the boundries between D&B and Dubstep slowly blurring they thought it would be the perfect time to write their first D&B collaberation since 1996! It features all the rudeness of the original but ups the tempo to give the track a new pace and feeling.

Coming soon – Quest “Smooth Skin / Wind Tunnel” [DEEP MEDi Musik]

Posted 10 June 2010 | By | Categories: news, tracks, video | 2 Comments

Quest is one of Dubstep’s forerunners signed to DEEP MEDi Musik and one of Antisocial Entertainment originals alongside Silkie, Heny G, Kromestar, Harry Craze, Jay 5 and Mizz Beats. Quest is never one to shout and make a fuss, always quiet and thoughtful but whilst all around are loosing their heads in the madness Quest has directed all his energy in to his production and is always far more at ease at letting his music do the talking.

Quest

Quest’s 4th release on DEEP MEDi ‘Smooth Skin’ showcases his progression, diversity and forward thinking as a producer. With it’s lush and dreamy opening chords, thumping bass kick, layered percussion and hypnotic vibes, you would be forgiven in forgetting about the B-line until it’s speaker shifting impact almost halfway through the track! Quest showing with ‘Smooth Skin’ that he takes as much inspiration from Detroit legends such as Moodymann and Theo Parrish as he does from label owner Mala (DMZ) and his very own Antisocial Entertainment Crew. ‘Wind Tunnel’ however on the flip sees Quest bouncing back to his Gangsta Boogie vibes for which he is so well known. Heavyweight, frenetic breakneck percussion, insane wall of bass, hard soulful and jazzy influences taking you on a mystical journey into outer space!
