New D ‘n’ B Releases

CRIT044 Canopy – FD, Hydro & Keza Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
New blood alert! Bringing through yet more untapped talent is the people’s choice, Critical Music, who bring us the debut release from a trio of boxfresh producers that’s already been doing damage with those lucky enough to have it. With FD being one of the brains behind possibly the most forward-thinking drum and bass event in London, Medium, you know before listening the force is strong on this one. Beautifully breezy pads open up ‘Canopy’ and a straight down the line break gets things moving nicely as added percussion seaps in along the way before the drop. Out go the pads and in comes a refreshingly spacious arrangement of percussive FX and thumping deep subs perfect for those dark late-night dance floors. Wait for the sumptuous atmospherics to return and you can’t help but be swept away by the groove as it carries us all the way to the end. A bit special. Then on to ‘Remorse’ and the guys spook things out a little with a ghostly whispered samples and an off-kilter break rolling under paranoid synth stabs and pads. As more booming subs kick in the pace picks up with shuffling snares and heavily filtered sonics that fill the speakers to drive it forward hard, while still retaining a huge sense of space that’ll see this in the DJ boxes at the deeper end of the spectrum.
Big support from Nu:Tone, Jubei, Spectrasoul, Alix Perez, Kasra, Logistics, Sabre and more.

As a promoter, he helped to throw some of the first raves and jungle events in the East Coast’s Mid-Atlantic region. And, as a musician, he is responsible for numerous releases and remixes on labels such as Vibez, Covert Operations, Vampire, Nexus (Good Looking), Levitated, Red Mist, Testflight, Elektra/Warner Brothers and more. CYAN033 Dark Times (State Of Mind Remix) – Bulletproof, Mindscape & Tiki Cyanide Recordings 12″ Vinyl
As a follow up remix 12” to the “DARK TIMES-DESPERATE MEASURES” LP, Bulletproof and Cyanide Recordings enlisted the remixing skills of two names synonymous with pushing the boundaries in the art of cutting edge beats. Fellow Kiwis, STATE OF MIND step up to the plate to deliver an absolutely tearing rollout of one of LP title tracks “DARK TIMES”. Comparable in style to tracks like “Bring it on” this remix has been smashing its way around the world for quite some time now, and state of mind show why they are such a force to be reckoned with when it comes to remixing hard hitting Dance floor tunes. Definitely one of their finest remixes to date. On the flipside, Still enjoying the success of his new album on NEOSIGNAL, Cyanide welcomes back to the roster, the one and only “MISANTHROP”. His rendition of Bulletproof Psidream & Doses LINE OF SIGHT takes the idea of remixing to a whole new level. Incorporating minimal elements of the original and giving them that futuristic Misanthropic twist is why he was the man signed up for the job.

RDR001 Your Way / Daydreamin – Netsky Radar Records 12″ Vinyl
Drum&bass has been booming in Belgium for some time. At the spearhead of the movement is Murdock, a dj who has been a weekly guest on Belgian national radio for years, and plays to thousands of people at all of Belgium’s biggest festivals, year in, year out. Coinciding with the release of his Jungle Fever mix cd, he now launches Radar Records, inspired by the incredible talent of his protege Netsky, an artist who has risen through the ranks of drum&bass like few have done before him. It will come to no surprise that the first release on this newly founded label is by the hands of this prodigy and with the smooth stylings of ‘Your Way’ (over 140.000 hits on Youtube) and the massive dancefloor liquid anthem that ‘Daydreamin’ is set to become, this looks like a sure winner. In the future more Netsky oddities will appear on Radar, but Murdock himself and friends slash artists like Jenna G are destined to make an appearance as well. The first 12inch has already gained support by Grooverider, Fabio, London Electricity and many more.

CRIT045 Redlines – Total Science Ft. Riya Critical Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. As we head into the warmer months camp Critical brings a true sunshine release from one of D&B’s tour de force production duos, Total Science. The original jungle dons push all the right buttons here as they team up with Riya for a sumptuous vocal excursion like no other. ‘Redlines’ has already been given the thumbs up by the likes of Mistajam and Ras Kwame on BBC Radio 1/1xtra and it’s not hard to see why. A solid locked groove rolls from the start on this one with a polished break and beautiful melancholic piano hook that draw you in before the real treat begins; when Riya’s gorgeous vocal drops in your heart will melt.
Effortless audio bliss for all the lovers out there. Things then toughen up 10-fold on the flip as the Total Science party boys drop ‘Skinz’, a crisp and dry piece of Bristol-esque D&B with a thugged-out b-line that’s had clubs shaking all over for the past six months.

MODULE001 More Than I Can Take / Silhouette – Lenzman Critical Presents : Modulations 10″ Vinyl
Critical Music are proud to announce for 2010 their all-new sibling imprint, Modulations. Already known as a camp with the utmost values in exceptional music and artistic design, Modulations promises to be something very special indeed. The schedule will include artists old and new with each release coming on 10” high grade virgin vinyl in a gorgeous slick housebag. A discerning product for the discerning D&B fan. So first up is the much touted Lenzman who’s been handed the privilege of opening up Modulations for business and what a job he’s done. ‘More Than I Can Take’ is a gorgeous piece of subtle audio bliss that sets the standard high for future releases to come. Light pads, sparkling key tones and a staggered break pave the way on the intro up to a luscious drop of warm bass and a male vox. Things drift smoothly on with the addition of a gnarly mid-range that toughens things up a little whilst all the time retaining the initial spacial, deep vibe. Lovely.‘Silhouette’ on the other side then takes things in a slightly moodier direction with a simple 2-step break leading the way but with more of those ethereal pads wafting over the top before a sinsitar bline takes over with some nasty edits and a souled out vocal sample to calm the nerves. An awesome way to finish off the first release of what will no doubt be a highly collectable electronic music label. DJ support from Goldie, Logistics, Kasra, Nutone, Spectrasoul, Friction and many more.

DSM014 The Visitor – Data Deep Soul Music 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The first DSM release of the new decade sees them continue to push leftfield, forward thinking drum & bass. 2009 was big year for Data with releases on Revolution, Horizons, premier dubstep label Tempa aswell as the mighty Metalheadz and for his first release of 2010 he returns to DSM with two tracks that cement his reputation as one of the most exciting and innovative producers in drum & bass at the moment. ‘The Visitor’ sees him come with a slightly different style than his previous releases with the stripped back, stepping intro giving way to skipping high hats that drive the track forward and a monstrous distorted Reese bassline reminiscenbt of late 90’s techstep. For the AA side he teams up with newcomer Kingsin for ‘Baggage’, and it is perhaps Data at his most experimental with sharp, staccato, almost off beat drums and haunting synth lines coupled with a his trademark growling bass. Both sides show a diversity in his production and goes to prove he is not one to stick to any particular style, but rather constantly innovate and push boundaries with his music.

Finish copy. Following up their critically-acclaimed Red Letter LP, Digital and Outrage link up for Outrage’s Backlash Records with “Eclipse”, a dub-soaked number to start 2010 proper! Lead by a thumping kick, this one is a dub-lovers dream, flowing with loads of effects, echo and perfectly-timed ragga vocals. There’s a lot of space in this one, allowing the elements to breathe, and the atmospherics feel like the soundtrack to the moon overtaking the sun. On the flip, Outrage’s “K Zero 9” finally makes it way to the record bins. This one has been tearing things down in its slow-burning venom, and is the perfect lick to get the party started, or send a ready crowd into a frenzy with its hypnotic bass. While the dub-side of Drum & Bass seems to be almost forgotten, its good to know that the torchbearers are still around, injecting tough riddims for those who know. -Khal (dogsonacid.com)

Senseless have always believed that the spirit of rave never died, it’s everywhere, but now in 2010 we’ve discovered that spirit distilled into its purest form, let’s call it essence of rave. Kanji Kinetic makes it, a monstrous hybrid of electro, bassline, jungle and, yes, rave. It doesn’t just deny classification, it smashes it to pieces. These tracks look backwards but sound like the future, they’re cheeky but deadly serious, they’re rough and smooth, sharp and blunt, sweet and sour, bouncy, wonky, hyper and just a little bit insane. In short, the ultimate party music. The EP is a game of two halves, easing you in at 140 BPM with a wonky mixture of future-bassline and pitch bent synths (ToyGuns) then rolling into the monstrous Scientist. Reach-for-the-lazers rave stabs and scorching bass collide to make something seriously dangerous. We then take a quick diversion for a remix from Kaiser, a newcomer with releases coming on Starkey’s Slit Jockey, who twists Toy Guns into a devastating mix of grime, 8bit bleeps and UK Funky syncopation, this is what it sounds like to be one of those ghosts being eaten by Pacman. Next up we turn up the pace for ‘New Era’, weighing in at 175 BPM, it’s the fastest thing we’ve ever released but its half time weight makes it feel like jungle chopped and screwed in the fifth dimension. Quite simply it has the biggest drop you will hear this year, possibly ever. It’s jungle tempo but drop this in a dubstep set and watch the floor ignite. The title track, Zombiezz also rocks 175 BPM on the half time but does it 4×4, cheeky cartoon samples and strings building to another seismic sub frequency workout. Finally Zombiezz gets two remixes, Cracks turn in something pretty special, taking things back down to 140 and turn in a mix they’re calling ‘Horror House’, a visceral mixture of techno, grime and lots of bass. Then just for fun we asked legendary hardtek producer 9MM to see if he could make Zombiezz a little harder, and he did. Enjoy! NB New Era and Zombiezz are being released as a split with our good pals Tigerbeat6, thanks guys.
PLAYS FROM: Raffertie, Starkey, Slugabed, Donna Summer, Kid606, Pirate Soundsystem, Chrissy Murderbot, The McMash Clan, Warlock, Subeena.

3024008 Titan EP – lllum Sphere 3024 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. “Titan.” Sometimes titles are just perfect, aren’t they? It’s a huge, sprawling beast that seems to inhale every mutant strain of bass music it can and exhales it in one exhilarating 4:20 blast. It opens with ominous rumbling and 8-bit bleeps (and crickets?) before ambient chords ascend out of the depths, dragging a twisting electro synth with them. That pulsating, spiraling synth slinks its way through the gossamer membranes of the track, contracting and expanding as needed, its bulbous, serrated ends emanating industrial howls like ghosts of rave sirens. Clinking percussion desperately tries to keep the track in line, but it bursts from its foundations for split seconds, causing little blips and beeps, interruptions, skitters, grasping feverishly at its surroundings; eventually the percussion splinters into fragments and things open out for a few moments, but a synthline this big can’t stay dormant for long, returning with hymnal chords in behind it, hovering, until the percussion comes back in, lockstep in with the riff as if resigned to the fact that it can never overcome something this massive. On previous releases, Illum Sphere’s fallen more into the post-Dilla FlyLo camp (what are we calling this stuff these days anyway?). His two EPs on Fat City have been impressive, but this new threetrack release on Martyn’s 3024 label sees him moving into slightly more dance-oriented waters, appropriating techno into his repertoire of subtly stomping tunes. ” “Go Killum” acts as a brief interlude, two minutes of mangled synth strewn about a deserted battlefield, canned, distorted gunshots taking the place of drums. The track takes neon brightness and submerges it in murky waters, the distorted beat only letting up for a few seconds of melodic prettiness before it stomps back in and chokes the life out of it all over again, until the blue turns to grey. It feels a little bit like a palate cleanser, a little morsel of whirling synths to clear out your tastebuds for the next psychedelic main dish. “Technopolis” is just that, its tumbling piano keys hoisted aloft on a pulsing techno beat and misty-eyed chords. He even finds time to set bass notes off like depth charges, overbalancing the track and scattering silvered notes onto the breeze. It wafts along like a classic techno track, gentle drums and glossy synths, as gentle strings pluck a nearly inaudible melody deep beneath the surface, in the sewers and slums of the technopolis, the unheard masses keeping the tune afloat. It’s an evocative track, dipping its toes into the past but never falling deep into the whirlpool of nostalgia, and even if it did, the indefatigable energy of “Titan” would pull it out right away, like a crazed dog on a leash.

HENCH017 1986 Was The Future – Mensah Hench 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Visit Bristol and mention the name Mensah; chances are that someone’s going to know the man we’re talking about. Having become involved in the Bristol music scene at an early age, there’s no surprise that his productions epitomize the things associated with the city’s music – positivity and progressiveness. Having already lent the bouncy number, Pulse 80’s, to the Hench Mixtape Vol. 1, and getting voted in the as one of the ‘Top 10 Producers to watch’ in the Dubstep Forum Awards, Mensah provides us with yet more reason to mark him down as one to keep an eye on in the future. The Untitled Future Funk EP is a 6 track release that provides a true insight into the depth of studio-skills this young artist has developed, touching on both the atmospheric and downright funky sides of dubstep. Already having had a track placed on the CSI TV series (Stapleton Rd) and with all tracks receiving regular play from the scene’s big hitters, we’re excited to present this stunning effort from Mensah.
A. 1986 WAS THE FUTURE – The synth-led chords from the outset of this tune frame it as a future classic of dubstep. Not holding back when the bassline drops, Mensah has crafted a sound that delivers a punch. A truly gripping production that keeps you locked, seeming to introduce new sounds and phrases whilst maintaining its esoteric feel. ‘1986 Was The Future’ is going to be one of those tunes that’ll have the dancefloor screaming for rewind after rewind – and we’re sorry, but you’re going to be obliged to give it to them! Currently being rinsed by the likes of Plastician, Starkey and L-Vis.
AA1. ACID DUB – On a slightly different tip, Mensah hits us with something a little more accustomed to the HENCH imprint’s sound. Commencing with that familiar steppy vocal, the background interference builds into a seemingly mechanical drop – lifting and taking all with it. A truly funky production that guarantees to turn the party to a full-on warzone when that bassline drops – no wonder the likes of Skream, Bok Bok and Baobinga have been smashing this one.
AA1. UNTITLED FUTURE FUNK – Guiding us in with tripped-out synths and a gentle kick-drum, this one drops subtly. ‘Untitled Future Funk’ is a wonderfully unique production that sits perfectly as an end-of night tune that is as progressive as it is moody. The track develops introducing extra synth to compliment that jagged kick-drum bassline. This track says more about Mensah’s production style than any of his previous releases; daring, innovative and effortlessly funky. Support from Mistajam, Joker, Plastician, Noah D, Von D and more.

RWINA007 Goin Out EP – SRC Rwina Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Fresh from Birmingham comes young talent SRC delivering the ‘Goin Out EP’ for the Rwina imprint. Stuffing old school 8-bit sensibilities and new school Grime attitude into a blender and hitting puree, SRC slings sizzling synths and punchy basslines with devastating effect. From the casual g-funk of ‘Goin Out’ and ‘Sort of a Start’ to the skank-u-like shuffle of ‘Facepalm’ and the Danjah-esque ‘Where’s the Remote?’, this EP contains Grime riddims that will fill every dancefloor with hypercolors, power-ups and neon-lights, like Pacman duelling with Mario in the dark. With all this in mind, SRC makes the case that he’s one to watch for the future, and with a workrate to match the hype, you can expect a lot more where this came from! DJ support comes from the distinguished likes of Starkey, Swindle, Elijah & Skilliam, Taz Buckfaster, Baobinga, Terror Danjah and many more…

BRIG014 For Love Or Money – D Kay & Concept Brigand Music 12″ Vinyl
Here comes the next 12″ from Vienna’s finest. Mastermind DKAY teams up with the the now firmly established CONCEPT, who, after having proved his production skills on various releases, adds the funk to the BRIGAND flavour. Epic 70s horns and house vocals set the tone for this high roller, called FOR LOVE OR MONEY. Favoured by Fabio, High Contrast and the likes, it does not only get the party started, but is also a pleasurable listening experience. Old school analogue production technique has been applied to give this tune a warm and driving edge, that seems to be missing in most computer based productions these days. So turn up the speakers and enjoy the sonics and the music.
For the flipside, long time partner RAWFULL joins DKAY in the studio once again. IN YOUR NAME is a bit more minimalistic than other tunes by the duo also known as ILLSKILLZ. A deep but angry reese bassline and a hypnotic synth riff are the trademark sounds in this dreamy piece of music, that will excite both party goers and home listeners alike. Here is what others had to say about this release:
MARCUS INTALEX on IN YOUR NAME: “Been starting my sets off with this recently.. sets the mood perfecty…”
LOGISTICS on FOR LOVE OR MONEY: “DKAY proves once again that soulful tunes can still have impact on the dancefloor, loving this one!!”

SUBS008 Back To The Machine Sampler – Current Value Subsistenz 12″ Vinyl
Subsistenz is back after a short seasonal break with one of the masters of sound design Current Value. Kick starting our new year with two tracks off pure techy genius just a small taste of what is to come on the much anticipated album Back To The Machine (subs001). A1 – Lipophil is a new breed of techno based dnb a deep brooding machine funk that captures the essence of techno and the energy of dnb. Moving away from the noise and into the sound scapes of detuned techy melodies reminiscence of the days of smokey single strobe techno parties held in basements all over Europe. Like a dysfunctional child lipophils energy is relentless and emotionally evolving held delicately within the threshold of its own exsistence. AA2 – In The Shell has been reworked and mangled by one half of Machine Code (current value) taken from there deeply awaited album Environments due out later this year on Subtrakt. The original machine step groove has been chopped – broken and reformed into a dnb floor stomper. This track is brutal in deliverance, sound and arrangement, with no remorse current value cooks up and injects a lethal strain straight to the mother vein.

Finish copies. Audio Danger records are proud to announce its first release. It hosts BMK’s ‘Twilight’ with a stunning remix on the flip by the king of soulful Drum and Bass, Utah Jazz. Both these tracks have had major support on BBC radio 1 and 1xtra from Fabio, Grooverider, Bailey, Nerm and D-code and more.
A. Twilight – BMK is an up and coming producer who has had releases on many other labels and is set to be a rising star for 2010. He comes to Audio Danger Records with a track that is full of summer dance floor niceness with its flowing bass line, vocals and pads. The track is reminiscent of the early liquid sound in 2003-04 with heavier beats and cut vocal samples. The combination of harder drums with the pad and vocal elements come together to bring a track that is sure to stand the test of time. Twilight is guaranteed to get any dance floor moving and is sure to be a smash throughout the Drum and Bass scene.
B. Twilight – BMK (Utah Jazz Remix) – Utah Jazz is best known for his soulful Drum and bass and with this remix he doesn’t disappoint. Using the best elements of BMK’s version, he takes them down another level and makes the track more relaxed in its nature. He combines his style with the elements of the original perfectly. This version is being championed by Bailey and Fabio and listening to it you can hear why. If you prefer your beats with soul and feeling then this is the version for you. The release also features an amazing artist who goes by the name of Tom Walker. He has created an unbelievable unique piece of artwork for the releases sleeve and this would make you want it either in your box to play or on your wall to appreciate it. New Dubstep CD

HFCD003 Triangulation – Scuba Hotflush Recordings CD
Scuba, aka Paul Rose, has been at the forefront of the dubstep scene since its birth. Having founded the innovative and influential Hotflush Recordings label in 2003, he has continually brought colour and depth to an advancing genre, expanding its sonic structure and increasing its influence on the wider electronic scene. Through Scuba and seminal work by central figures including Distance, Vex’d and more recently Mount Kimbie and Joy Orbison, Hotflush remains crucial to the immediate moment and the developing future of the most exciting aspects of electronic music.
Following the first Scuba LP, A Mutual Antipathy (2008), and the more recent Aesaunic EP (2009), this album takes the Scuba sound to a new level. The collision of dubstep and techno has produced startling music from a wide range of producers in the last few years, none more than Scuba, and that has been well documented. But Triangulation moves past the dubstep/techno axis and into new territory. Working at multiple tempos, the album covers an area ranging from house to experimental drum n bass while retaining the Scuba sound that has become so distinctive. You Got Me and So You Think You’re Special, released as an advance 12”, reflect the range of the album with the huge bass and frenetic energy of the former contrasting with the melancholic atmospheres and melodies of the latter. The listless beauty of Before, the aggressively percussive Minerals and the hyperactive electro of On Deck provide further stylistic variation, but this is not simply a collection of tracks – for the best sonic results this album should be listened to in full.

Toronto based XI makes his immerse debut having caught the eye with his recent release on OffRoad. 000 with its quirky, hypnotic vocal alongside the relentless sub dares people not to get lost within its enveloping warmth. On the flip, Slippin is another militant sub work out, but with a gradual build into a twinkling electro soundscape, with some rather rude bass stab action to reward the long play listener.

STORM016 Solid State – Emalkay Storming Productions 12″ Vinyl
Fresh off the back of the massive single ‘When I Look At You’ & ‘AGS’ on sister label Dub Police. Emalkay steps up to Storming Productions with two wicked tracks. They have been tearing up dancefloors worldwide over the last couple of months. Both remaining permanent fixtures in the sets of Caspa, Benga, Skream, The Others, N-Type, Hatcha and just about anybody who is anybody in dubstep right now. Solid State is a brutal anthem that has been melting a few faces as of late. The track has a dark and mystical intro with drums tougher than Mike Tyson’s knuckles. This is all before dropping into an unforgiving crunching bass that will bring any dancefloor to submission. On the flip is the heavyweight ‘Battlesuit’ this is a dark roller with a real swing. An atmospheric soundscape with rolling drums that don’t prepare you for the warping sub bass. This bassline will smack you in the face at the drop, as the track seemingly morphs and progresses into a dark techy monster. Another essential release from Emalkay and a welcome return of one of dubstep’s foundation labels.

ARX004 Minimal Bump EP – Nekochan Airflex Labs 12″ Vinyl
Nekochan’s 2009 debut download-only release met with success in pushing dubstep into new zones, and now comes the first foray into vinyl, with the three-track killer ‘Minimal Bump’ EP, that will further reconfigure notions of what bass music can be. The title track has already been featured on Mary Anne Hobbs, who played an early version in may last year after hearing it on myspace. ‘Minimal Bump’ is a powerful techno/break/dubstep instrumental with a huge kick and seismic bass work, custom built for dancefloor mayhem, with its layered synths, advanced rythmic shifts, cavernous drops, and an explosive production style that recalls the intricacies of prime Meat Beat Manifesto at the same time as giving Reso a run for his money. On the flip, ‘Bombine’ is another view entirely; a emotive disjointed stepper with melancoly pop tones, which unfolds in a smokey torch-song style to reveal further layers to Nekochan’s innate musical instincts. It’s fluidly evolving contrasts between dominant bass levels, powerful rhythms, and subtlypitched Japanese strings mix and grow around that voice, putting the listener as much in mind of Burial’s sadness as Bjork’s vivid expression. Finally, Vahiné is a refreshing journey into a lighter and atmospheric dubstep style, reminiscent in mood of Scuba or Martyn, with a dynamic bouncy drum pattern delivering the perfect groove for the heavy bassline to ride on while the sweet string melody leads from the front. Essential purchase for anyone seeking out new directions in heady dancefloor electronics.

RAMP028 Maintain – Computer Jay Ramp Recordings 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. COMPUTER JAY returns to RAMP after the massive Distance/Epiphany 10” earlier this year, with Maintain. Now if you don’t know, Jay is an LA resident, and part of the collective that includes Flying Lotus, Ras G, Gaslamp Killer, y’all know the names… Jay’s best friend is a computer, surprisingly named Computer. Computer is a wise cracking collection of circuit boards, and enjoys spitting crazy verses over Jay’s synth-heavy beats. Maintain is their first collaboration that has reached wax, and boy, you better brace yourselves! Ascending analog flourishes scattered over Jay’s minimal beats, giving Computer room to do his thing. Jay’s epic production packs more into 3 and a half minutes than most producers can cram into 10. True to form, we have drafted an unrivaled array of remixers in for the project. RAMP’s best boy FaltyDL is first up, and gives us an edgy and uncomfortable edit in his unique garage-not-garage style. Upstanding member of the community, and all round lovely chap MIKE SLOTT steps out of his comfort zone with some euphoric basslined hip hop badness. IKONIKA brings the project to its conclusion with a hands-in-the-air, wonky, broody techstep rendition. DJ SUPPORT FROM MARY ANNE HOBBS, ONEMAN, CLOUDS, ALEX NUT, KODE 9.

MEDI024 Protecting Hands Remixes – Clouds Deep Medi Musik 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy. Following on from the highly acclaimed original productions ‘Protecting Hands (Parts 1 and 2)’ released mid-2009 on DEEP MEDi Musik, Clouds have enlisted Berkane Sol’s label owner Geiom and experimental electronic minimalists Isan to dissect and rebuild. Kamal Joory AKA Geiom has been busy producing since the late 90’s pushing the downtempo and ambient sounds of IDM and merging them with his love of raw grime and garage instrumentals. In 2006 Geiom started the ever-reliable Berkane Sol imprint releasing his own work (most notable the stunning ‘Reminssin’ featuring Marita) but also giving Brackles and Shortstuff their first outing on wax. Geiom’s remix of ‘Protecting Hands’ sketches out a dreamy, beautiful half-step approach with his love of electronica clearly coming heavily in to play, complimenting the original ghostly vocal perfectly. One of his best productions we think? Isan have been making minimalistic electronics since the mid 90’s with killer releases on Morr Music and Static Craven. Clouds are clearly fans of their work and this comes across in their remix as they dissect the original and create a blissful, beatless journey, permitting the sound to develop organically, with their intuitive grasp of melody and their intelligent manipulation of sound dictating its direction.

SWAMP005 Footcrab – Addison Groove Swamp 81 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Full artwork sleeve. Addison Groove aka Headhunter has made an absolute beast here, taking hyperdelic 808/909 drum machine grooves and big bass then applying it all to dubstep. There aren’t many vaugly dubstep related DJs NOT playing this right now, its an anthem already, people even try and sing along. Loefah is now his label Swamp81 and its absolute madness. Whatever happens, the track is sick. http://drownedinsound.com/community/boards/music/4249517

WHEELYDEALY004 Masiamara – Youngsta & Seven Wheel & Deal Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish Copy Full artwork sleeve. This lineup will be sure to excite dubstep fans, N-Type teams up with Youngsta and Seven for a collaboration release on his Wheel & Deal label. Seven is an upcoming artist who’s releases on Aquatic Lab triggered some attention he has since been working heavily on collabs with N-Type and… Youngsta, who isn’t famed for his productions, more for his expert DJ skills showcased regularly on Rinse FM. ‘Masiamara’s atmospheric intro is classic Youngsta vibes, deep, dark and heavyweight, reminiscent of SP:MC’s recent output, rolling drums and a funky bass line. Support on this one from N-Type, Walsh, Benga etc. Wicked tune! N-Type joins in for the flip with ‘The Story’ a slipping, sliding, tearout dancefloor smasher!! Perfect tunes for the DJ…

LAB009 The Sound – Cluekid Aquatic Lab Records 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Aquatic Lab kick of 2010 with an already established club anthem. Cluekid’s remake of Reggie Stepper’s ‘Drum Pan Sound’ strikes heavy with a ruff and rugged bassline that rolls nicely under the familiar melody & vocal hooks of the original. The drums on this one are clean, precise & ten tonne. The flip features an old school revivalist joint with the palette borrowing from Jungle. ‘Late Nights’ brings forth quality production techniques, from the crisp percussion to the warm massively padded bassline. Essential.

SPEAKS001 The Always EP – Hackman Shifting Peaks 12″ Vinyl
Finish copies. With a label HQ based half way up a cliff in deepest North Devon, and an artist roster that includes a Hampshire lad living in Leeds, a crew of Cubans holed up in Hackney, and the hottest new thing to come up out of Leicester since Willie Thorne hung up his cue, new label Shifting Peaks won’t be easy to pin down geographically . And musically it promises to be no less diverse, covering everything from the deeper end of Funky and 2010 Garage to Cuban Hip Hop and dubbed out Beats. Kicking things off in style for the label is Leeds resident Hackman, who’s ‘Pistol in Your Pocket’ tune was one of the highlights of the recent Fabric/Elevator comp. Lead cut ‘Always ‘ employs the vocal talents of newcomer Harper Lake over a bumping UKF/Nu Garage backing that’s both warm and deep, combining proper hooks with easy dancefloor appeal. Fast rising Londoner Brackles then takes the song and straps on a phuture – garage turbo-charger, adding techno textures and slamming beats for a crunching, dynamic rework. An instrumental version of Hackmans’ original works in it’s own right , and to round the package off, the dubheads also get ‘Multicultural’, a deep, percussion driven roller perfect for late night jams and red eyed-headphone excursions alike.

O4H001 Seeking feat Yolanda – Ghettozoid 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. The label is called ‘One4Ho’. The origins of it’s name came from a seminal summer in Berlin, where Sophie Ruston (Ghettozoid) and Mai Harper (label founders) first laid eyes on each other. The name One4Ho incorporates Ghettozoid’s obsession with Miami Bass. Essentially we are ladies that love the 140tempo.
IDJ mag review: Bristol resident Ghettozoid brings in fêted vocalist Yolanda to help launch her One 4 Ho imprint. Moody washes of midrange synth provide an ample background for Yolanda’s stunning vocal spiritual, clockwork garage breaks and thunderous bass thrum adding a dash of urgency to the mix. Crackle house specialist Blue Daisy turns in a sick remix on the flip, dubbing the track hard as he stretches the samples tautly across his canvas – ambient vocal excursions eventually joined by a burrowing acid bassline and Daisy’s trademark squeezed beats.

UNTITLED002 Dial Up – Seven Untitled! 12″ Vinyl
Finish copy. Seven – Dial Up. Seven is established DnB producer Eddy Woo alter ego. In this incarnation he is currently making waves with several releases. This side is a classic youngsta track, with a typical Seven bass work out and a light melody built around driving percussive drum programming making it fit in anywhere. Science – Bamboo Dub. Science are a young production team out of the greater Antwerp area. This is their debut release and as such a great introduction to their sound. Building on the sounds that made halfstep dubstep so popular this track is eyes down business all the way with deep bass and melodica lines.

VULPCD001 Boe Weaver – Boe Weaver VU Records CD
They have reworked and remixed everybody from Cee Lo to Paolo Nutini to Temper Trap and even Tom Jones. Lots of people are whispering their names right now, here’s your chance to hear why… Sometimes you can come across a musical project that encapsulates the fun we all have in our lives which then instantly becomes a soundtrack to get you through your daily grind, so welcome to the world of Boe Weaver, where 3D sunglasses are needed just to understand the madness of what is being concocted. As one review of Boe Weaver’s debut so rightly put it “If this LP was thirty-odd years old and the soundtrack to some exploito-hacker movie, then it would be changing hands for £200-plus. However, it’s a new release, which means you don’t have to pay through the nose to land a copy…’ You definitely should Because what Boe Weaver do is far out shit, basically. A lava lamp of sound exploding in your face. A cosmic rearrangement and prolonged derangement of the senses that is totally necessary in an era when 99% of music does anything but that. What happened to wanting to change the world through music? Start a revolution? Healing the karmic wounds of the universe? sick and the needy? It’s right here. We could also maybe point to some disparate contemporary reference points too: Chrome Hoof, Oneida, The Horrors, Dungen, David Holmes, Cherrystones. That type of thing.
