Coming soon – Scorn “Refuse; Start Fires” LP [Ohm Resistance]

Posted 12 August 2010 | By Editor | Categories: news | No Comments

Scorn’s fourteenth full length release remains in the vibe and tempo of modern dubstep while adding a brand new element to the Scorn sound: a live drummer, Ian ‘Yan’ Treacy. The vibrant sounds of the kit are run thru the filters and dub wizardry of Mick Harris, former drummer of Napalm Death and Guinness World Record Holder for composer of the world’s shortest song.

The tracks are a journey into dark atmospheres and atomic warhead bass, with more variation and hue than 2007′s ‘STEALTH’. Yet on ‘Refuse; Start Fires’ Harris has returned to painting angry pictures with more colours than simply black – the record takes on new territory at the 70 bpm mark, and the live kit gives the tracks a more fluid groove than ever in places. But this is Scorn, and Scorn delivers darkness and anger like no one else, with merciless cuts such as Bear Felt Nowt and Shitwind’s A-Coming providing harsh atmospheres and endurance test bass wobble like only Mick Harris can dish out.

Scorn is an entity – for over 15 years Mick Harris has not relented with the project’s dubbed out beats, film noir atmospheres, and over the top bass compulsions. ‘Refuse; Start Fires’ is perhaps the angriest and most well articulated of his projects in the last decade.

Coming soon – Truth “Puppets” LP [Aquatic Lab Records]

Coming soon – Truth “Puppets” LP [Aquatic Lab Records]

Posted 26 July 2010 | By Editor | Categories: news, tracks, video | 3 Comments

Forthcoming on Sept 6th Aquatic Lab is a debut LP from New Zealand based production unit Truth, entitled “Puppets”.

Since their debut appearance on Deep Medi Music, Truth has been hard at work on their LP and now it’s ready to drop. With the initial album sampler (LAB010 ‘Dead Silence’ & ‘Burglar’) laying the foundations, the second 12” LAB011 (forthcoming on 9th August) reinforces with ‘Juno’ & ‘Under Current’, two huge stepper grooves layered with more than enough weight for the shockout. The album itself ‘Puppets’ is a dense trip through moody big bass-driven soundscapes that include some of their finest work in the form of ‘The Fatman’, ‘Lab Rat’ and a VIP of the previously released ‘Terror Planet’. Also on the roster, Truth’s ‘Legion’, possibly their most sought-after riddim to date, which brings their trademark sound signatures of sweeping synths and massive amounts of bass fully into place. ‘Pup- pets’ touches on many styles such as the liquid offering of ‘Indigo Mood’, or the almost genre defying vocal lick ‘Don’t Explain’. ‘Puppets’ is a full bodied experience from start to finish – for darkly elegant dubstep it doesn’t get much better than this.

Truth

Truth have received DJ support around the globe from artists such as Mala, Skream, Joe Nice, Breakage, Hatcha and N Type, with their beats being dropped at shows from Club Love in New York City to DMZ in London, as well as featur- ing on radio stations BBC Radio One, Kiss and Rinse. Two comprehensive Europe tours and a string of gigs around Australia and Asia, have included an appearance at the legendary DMZ night in Brixton and the infamous Sub Dub in Leeds.

Truth’s big riddims have been quickly snatched up by a number of established labels such as seminal Deep Medi Musik and Skream’s Disfigured Dubs. Alix Perez has included his collaboration with Truth on his debut album ’1984′ and the group have remixed the likes of The Nextmen, Ms Dynamite and Silverclub.

I witnessed N Type drop this track back in april and it caused complete chaos – listening to this on anything other than a proper system just doesn’t do this one justice, make sure you turn this one right up to capture the destructive bassline and nasty switches throughout.

Right now the artist is unconfirmed but it’s gonna be dropping later this year. only Skream, N Type, Benga, Hatcha, Kromestar and Chef have this so to hear it played out is a rare experience.
Remember to turn this one right up.

Coming soon – Subway Recordings Presents “Destination” Series

Coming soon – Subway Recordings Presents “Destination” Series

Posted 30 June 2010 | By Editor | Categories: news, tracks, video | No Comments

Subway Recordings has been a steady force within the dubstep scene the last 3 years. Not only as a label but also as one of the most forward thinking party crews on the Dutch scene. Some of the leading names have passed through Subway first before becoming the new rockstars of today….

By flexing its sides from deep to hardcore they have been showing how far the word dubstep bends into multiple angles, after releasing quality tunes like “Missed Calls”, “Unknown Suspect” and especially last year’s hotly tipped “Seeeeriousss” its certain that this label knows quality when they hear it.

This Destination Compilation has the word quality written all over it, ranging from Mutant Funky Dubstep to Garage combined with some of the girttiest and darkest sounds Dubstep has to offer. Subway once again shows what Dubstep is about. Not clinging to styles of focusing on sub genres, this compilation is all about Dubstep in every sense of the word.

Play support for these tracks comes from the likes of Noah D, The Others, Emalkay, Broken note, Youngsta, N-Type, Babylon System, Antiserum, Seven, Matt-U, Audio, Marlow, Hatcha, Skream, Benga, Flux Pavillion, Trolley Snatcha, Doctor P, Giant, Distinction, Joker, Komonazmuk, 16bit and more….

Coming soon – Funtcase & Southbound Hangers Ft. Raff “Dubsteppa” [NCOMP002]

Coming soon – Funtcase & Southbound Hangers Ft. Raff “Dubsteppa” [NCOMP002]

Posted 29 June 2010 | By Editor | Categories: news, tracks | No Comments

Only it’s second release in and Marlow’s No Comply Recordings brings you a sure-fire dance-floor anthem. Kids are chanting along to the lyrics in clubs all over the globe – ‘Dubsteppa, Hot like Pepper’. -Yeah it’s that one!
On the flip, the biggest Trance tune of 2009 gets the Marlow remix. ‘Aztec’ by The Neptune project was Armin Van Buuren’s top pick of last year, and Marlow has transformed it into a Dubstep beast.

Just as before, the vinyl format is strictly limited, hand-numbered, and hand-stamped. But this time it also comes with a free poster. So get in quick to avoid disappointment.

A. FUNTCASE & SOUTHBOUND HANGERS FT. RAFF – DUBSTEPPA

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

After the success of ‘So Vexʼd’ on Circus Recordings earlier in the year, Funtcase teamed up with Brighton duo ‘Southbound Hangers’ to create the almighty ‘Wizard Sleeve’. With the help of MC Raff, the south-coast boys now take it one step even further – Dubsteppa. Due to its infectious lyrics, this track is easily one of the most recognisable and memorable tracks in DJ sets right now.

Southbound Hangers, Funtcase & Raff

Brutal half-step beats cut through razor edged mid-range synth-bass madness. A clever and subtle mixture of precise fills and edits sit in perfect contrast against the in-your-face yet simple bass riff. Nothing more need be said about the lyrics – you all know them, you’ve all heard them. And Raff only confirms this track as an essential purchase.

B. THE NEPTUNE PROJECT – AZTEC (MARLOW REMIX)

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Described by The Others as ‘the master of intros’, Marlow creates tension and suspense in a schizo blend of an enchanting intro vs the most gnarly and disturbing Marlow creation to date. Twisting and turning, the bass line slowly matures into bit-crusher mayhem. Percussion fills and clever cuts placed between evolving bass fluctuations keep this remix captivating throughout.

DJ support from: Rusko, Caspa, Chase n Status, 16bit, Crissy Cris, Jakes, Mistajam, Excision, Datsik, Stenchman, Trolley Snatcha, Doctor P, Flux Pavilion.
